I find the city has that effect on many people - often for different reasons, but the result is the same. There are people everywhere with Glasgow in their hearts, who were only here for a moment. I hope you find it even better when you return

Apparently impossible for people in my close. There are signs everywhere in the close, and on the bins themselves, and yet every time the blue bins get sorted out, within a day they are full of bits of wood, bin bags, pizza boxes, and other stuff. They literally sit next tot the correct bins, and people won't walk the extra one step to use the right bin. Infuriatingly, if I move the blue bins further away, so that lazy buggers have to pass the green bins to get to them, the bin men move them back - I have no idea why.

Might be worth checking with your neighbours if it belongs to them. We had loads of post for a name we didn't recognise, and kept returning it all as "not at this address" - but more kept coming. Turned out that someone with number dyslexia/dyscalculia had moved in downstairs and was changing their address with their bank/power company/phone etc but getting the flat/floor numbers confused and swapping them around - like writing 2/3 instead of 3/2 - so we were getting almost all her mail.

Wine generally is gluten free, since it uses no gluten ingredients and any cross contamination should always be less than the 20ppm required to be considered safe for Coeliacs. It looks like buckfast has nothing in it that contains gluten, so it should be fine. If in doubt, check with buckfast: [https://www.buckfast.org.uk/contact-page](https://www.buckfast.org.uk/contact-page)

Tell them to get lost if they turn up. If they want to access your home, or even ask you questions, they can only do so if you let them, or they can convince the police that they have evidence that you are using services illegally.

I used to visit a friend up in Possil once or twice a month a few years back, and never had any issue with anyone. There is one or two streets which \*look\* really bad, but I never saw anyone being anything other than polite and friendly, and there was always friendly chatter on the loaded busses headed up there, even among strangers. Your mileage may vary, but in my experience, most of the time tales about a place are no more than that - just stories, exaggerated beyond reality - and the only people who tend to run in to trouble are the people who go in expecting or looking for it.

Things being worse in England doesn't make it ok for people to be cunts here and risk the lives of me and mine because they are too stupid and /or selfish to put a wee bit of cloth over their face properly.

Just a shame it's more dangerous for drivers now, not to mention noisier, and it's causing delays for emergency service vehicles - and about half of the cyclists aren't even using the cycle lanes (and many who are are going the wrong way and think that the lanes give them the right to ignore lights and traffic and pedestrians altogether). Barriers sitting for weeks/months that forced pedestrians into close confines during a pandemic were just icing. It's been a massively idiotic waste of money, IMHO.

It does seem insane to be paying for 'services' whether or not those services are performed adequately (or at all), and with no control over the service provider or option to go for a competitor. If the window cleaner doesn't show up to clean the windows, he doesn't get paid. But if the bin men can't be arsed to empty the bins for 3 weeks? Tough luck. We've had the bins missed being emptied 6 or 7 times in the last 6 months, and we had 3 months without the blue bins being touched at all, and no bulk uplifts in what, 9 months? Yet we've still expect to keep paying for it all. Huge amounts (and far too much time) spent on making Victoria Road prettier and less practical, yet every road around it is riddled with potholes - some of which will kill your car if you're not careful. And yet we're still paying.

Note that this post \^ will likely be downvoted to oblivion, despite being completely accurate, simply because so many people who know bugger all about Govanhill and don't live here \*love\* whinging about how terrible it is.

I live a few blocks from there, and Govanhill has a terrible reputation among people who don't live here and who'd probably struggle to find it on a map, but love to repeat stuff that someone else (who also doesn't live here) told them, because it allows them to be all superior, and, often, racist. Everyone seems to know someone who definitely really does exist and totally lives in Govanhill, and hates it because of all the crime/rubbish/rats/graffiti/etc that is totally the fault of russians/roma/teenage hookers/asians/indians/whatever (but they are totally not racist, but). The reality is that there are a few parts of Govanhill which have had problems, largely due to shitty landlords and overcrowding, but there is an on-going clamp down on that, and efforts being made to improve the area. I've seen rubbish in the streets, and some illegal dumping, but in 3 years here I've seen zero crime (apart from an abusive ex of a neighbour letting the air out of her tires, once, because she kicked him out), one rat, and hundreds of every day acts of decency and friendship. I've seen more rubbish, dumping, and crime in many other areas of Glasgow, including may of the frequently-lauded 'posh' areas. I've never seen street violence, never been stopped or threatened in the street, never had any damage to my car or seen or heard of a house or car break in. I cannot speak directly to the quality of that junction/street, as I live a little further up Victoria road, but Govanhill as a whole is excellent, and I've loved living here.

just trying to help you avoid looking stupid, but I guess there is no stopping some people. For future reference, responding to "I want to hear from people who live there" with "I don't live there, but", or similar, shows you as the guy no-one wants to talk to because he just can't help sticking his oar in even when he has no idea what the conversation is about. Your sense of self-importance has outweighed your reading comprehension, and acting like it's all someone else's problem if they point it out doesn't make you look smart or clever, it makes you look rather sad and inadequate. Next time no-one asks for your opinion - or (as is the case here) specifically asks for opinions that do not include yours - try just not saying anything. Remember the old adage: "better to stay silent and be thought a fool, than to speak and remove all doubt".

Channelling your inner nazi are you? I should not be "allowed"? Have a word with yourself you delusional nutjob. You know nothing about me, and clearly nothing about Govanhill either. Was someone from Govanhill more popular than you at school or something, that the damage to your fragile ego has left you with such bile, or are you just a generally ignorant, hateful, and spite-filled little troll? Next time someone shits in your cornflakes, try dealing with it like a grown up, instead of spraying your crazy at strangers on the internet - you might actually see an improvement in your life so that you feel less frightened and small. With a bit of time and effort, you might one day even go a whole day without having to act hard to protect yourself from the scary world that exists in your head. Good luck.
by
TheMalgor
(Thu 7th Jan 2021 12:30pm)
Lol, projection much? I won't address most of your bile, because it's not worth the effort - but one thing I will bring up: "telling people not to comment on a post because their not from the area" If you had bothered to read the original post to which you were responding, or the actual messages from me which you are whining about in which I quote the original post, you'd know that the original poster \*specifically asked for input from people who LIVE in Govanhill\*, not from any self-important random with a half-baked opinion. Your failure to even spot that fact in your rush to bash people and feel special pretty much sums up why I don't even need to bother addressing anything else you say. "I don't live there but..." in response to a request for input from people who live there is just embarrassing and sad. Of course, you are now telling me, who does live there, that you know far more about the area than I do, so I guess logic and good sense are just not your strong points. Seriously, you should be fucking ashamed of your conduct here; You've responded to someone you don't know who is talking about squirrels by telling them they shouldn't be 'allowed' to have kids, implying they are stupid and unable to protect a child, live in a slum, and are too poor to leave, and going on about bullying at school (wtf is that all about?) - and then you're trying to take the moral high-ground and pretend that it is they who have the problem and anger issues? What the fuck is wrong with you? Maybe consider getting help with your issues: some counselling, anger management, perhaps basic lessons in reading comprehension, spelling, and grammar? I'm done with your nonsense. It's fun sometimes to poke the frothing trolls, but you're rapidly getting to the point of being a danger to yourself, and to the IQ of anyone wasting time reading your impotent rants. Have fun pretending you 'won' whatever argument you think you are having, and I hope the 'victory' fuels your 'special alone time' for a good long time. Take care not to hurt yourself by getting too carried away. I'm sure you will reply, having not read most of this, and understood even less, but it won't be read, and you will be blocked. I will end by saying: I am so glad I live in Govanhill, because you don't.

I haven't needed much done by them - a window repair and roof repair, and a close cleaning issue - and a neighbour asked for the lock on the back door to be fixed. For the close cleaning, window, and roof, they came out same day and fixed the issues, no problem. The door took them about a week to get around to, and I had to argue the point to get them to issue keys, since they hadn't done so when anyone moved in here, but claimed all tenants were responsible for their own keys. They capitulated after a couple of emails, and gave everyone keys - but the door lock that was 'fixed' doesn't actually line up with the frame, so it doesn't work. They were informed, and insisted they'd fix it, but haven't done so 3 months later. So, honestly, they seem a bit hit-or-miss. Close cleaning gets done, close has been redecorated recently, and urgent repairs get done, but beyond that they don't seem too interested - if they don't *have* to do it, to avoid further costs or trouble from the council, then they won't.

yup - haggis pakora. Many Indian restaurants and chip shops have it :) Personally, I don't put anything on it, but a bit of spicy brown sauce does work well sometimes, if you get some that is a little dry. Can someone explain why there is such insane hatred for Govanhill amongst some people? I've lived in a few different places, and there is always some 'good natured' rivalry and feigned superiority of some areas over others - often people who live in an area hating on it more than people who don't :P - but I've never seen anything like the sheer unhinged reality-denying vitriol that gets aimed at Govanhill by people who don't live there (and who, often, don't seem to have ever even been there!) What have I missed?

This is great example of why I get so confused by these claims of dire circumstance in Govanhill: " Tenements are infested with cockroaches" Of all the things you could have chosen to mention, the claim you make is cockroaches. And yet, while Glasgow (as a whole) has a relatively high callout rate for cockroaches, compared to some other cities, it is still only a few hundred call outs per year for \*the whole city\*. Bearing in mind that many of these callouts will be revisits to failed extermination attempts, that number is far from high - there are 2 - 3 \*thousand\* callouts per year for both mice and rats, separately. There are more callouts for bedbugs than cockroaches - yet you insist that the tenements are \*infested\* with them. This is why the claims about Govanhill confuse me - because they always assert it is an awful place, then make some (often easily) verifiably false declaration to back up the claim. Now, maybe when you lived here, your flat was riddled with cockroaches - and I don't deny that some of the claims made by others *may* have been true at some point - but that does not mean those issues extend to all tenements/streets/people for all time, and I genuinely don't understand why some people are so keen to claim it does.
by
TheMalgor
(Wed 20th Jan 2021 7:48pm)
I'm sure there are roaches in Govanhill - there are unlikely to be \~300 reports in Glasgow each year without some of those being in Govanhill. It just seems like insisting that "Tenements are infested with cockroaches" is a statement designed to elicit a particular response, rather than being grounded in fact. I have no doubt there are flats in Govanhill with cockroaches - just as I have no doubt there are flats and houses with roaches in every other part of Glasgow; but I don't see anyone trying to claim that Hyndland tenements are 'infested', do you? A friend of my wife tells me that the HA she works for has about as many pest control calls about moths as they do about cockroaches, even though they don't deal with moths. whoiamisme chose a claim of cockroach infestation to back up their claim of "it was a shit hole then and still is now" not because it was true, but because it helped support their claim. \*That\* is the issue I was addressing in the comment they replied to - people decide they don't like Govanhill, and make up all sorts of shit to justify that and convince others that their dislike/hatred is warranted and sensible. Why? What does anyone gain by loudly lying at every opportunity, about a place they don't live or work in, and don't seem to know anything about (or even care to learn anything about)? It's beyond bizarre. The only sensible reason anyone has offered for such behaviour so far is in some of the other replies I've received here: racism. I'd like to think it's not that, but I can't think of any other likelihood. PS - your pest guy's statement sounds good, on the surface, but if you think for a moment... there are not too many creatures for which that *isn't* true. If you see a rat, there is likely more; if you see a bird, there is likely more; a few fish - there are likely more! :P

Honestly, I think the majority of the reason for holding people like animals at a slaughter house is the twisted idea that people here without gold-plated invites from the queen are worse than criminals. You've probably seen a fair bit of that on here today, if you've followed any of the threads discussing it - people chiming in regularly with "but there must be a reason", "what if they're rapists" etc. I suspect the there is also some reasoning that treating these people like shit might 'encourage' them to withdraw their request for asylum, and go away, and might 'discourage' other 'illegal immigrants'.
by
TheMalgor
(Thu 13th May 2021 7:07pm)
The treatment \*is\* the point, though. Moving them to a 5 star hotel would achieve nothing - that's why they are not doing that. They're moving them to an overcrowded detention centre, run by 'private concerns' (like G4S, with a huge string of failures and abuses behind them). Again, it's mostly about being able to 'punish'. You can't punish someone, or make them feel insecure and make them want to leave (even if leaving means returning to a warzone or a death sentence), if you let them live in a caring community, can you? These people are here because they want to be here. The point of moving them to detention is to get them 'under control' and away from help. There is no \*good\* reason to pull people out of the community during the review period. Even after review, there is no good reason to do anything other than notify the people of a failed application, and maybe invite them to appeal, and give them a date to leave. If they fail to leave, that is when further steps should be taken, and those steps should be arrest and immediate deportation - never detention without trial in what amounts to a prison camp. Scotland welcomes refugees and asylum seekers - the UK, not so much.

Doesn't matter - arrest and deportation isn't what they were there to do. The point isn't about what these guys have or have not done, or what stage of the process they're at - the point is that our immigration policy should \*never\* include government officers deliberately choosing to raid a house on a holy day, in order to take people in to a privately run prison, without trial. If these guys were at the point of deportation, after refusing to leave peacefully, the process should be (as I said above) actually deporting them - not dragging them off to what amounts to a for-profit prison camp, for an indeterminate time. Do you disagree?

These guys are decently equipped - the routinely handle large demos and stuff, so know what they need - but they ran out of gloves and bandage before they got done. They treated at least a dozen injuries, and one of their team sustained a 'moderate' injury themselves, just due to the amount of debris and broken glass. Glasgow Street Aid, a charity which helps with first aid and medic support was there for 7 hours, and say they dealt with 17 injuries [https://twitter.com/GlaStreetAid/status/1393909065235976200](https://twitter.com/GlaStreetAid/status/1393909065235976200) I'm not sure we'll ever be able to get an actual number for the injuries.

My daughter's overdue it due to her health status, but the GP insists they have nothing to do with it. The Help line says they can't do anything about it, and just sent us to an online form which only takes basic details - name, DoB, phone number, etc. - and doesn't give you any way to say *why* you think you should have received the appointment already. The response to the form is an email saying "we'll look at it, just wait". So, overall, the feedback from all corners is "not my problem, just wait and hope". It's not encouraging. We were all doing well, but it's starting to look like someone dropped the ball (I'm sure the hundreds of people I see ignoring guidelines every day don't help). Hopefully, things improve soon, or we're headed for another spike, and a lot more lockdown, which almost no-one will follow. :/

Used to live in Livingston, and the uplift guys were \*beyond\* that petty. You had to list every single item, and they still usually left stuff. Once I listed a PC case: I watched the guy pick up the case by the front bezel, then the bezel and both sides detached from the body of the case; the guy looked at the bezel, looked at the rest of the case, and walked away with just the bezel. He didn't come back for the other parts, just left them in my garden. Be certain that you tell them the seat will be in bits, and tape the parts together if possible.

Ignoring for a moment the shear delusion required to equate the 2 events, let's see if you can grasp some basics. As you said, Police Scotland used public safety as a reason to release the detainees. Do you know why? What happened to the crowd when the guys were released? How big was the crowd at Kenmure street? How many of them had masks? How did that compare to the Ranger's crowd? How many police officers were injured at Kenmure street? How much property damage? What was the clean up cost? Now, importantly, was there an urgent and pressing need for action in Kenmure street, and did a similar need exist in George square? If you're still not able to see a difference, and are determined to hold your delusions, let me ask you this one last (two-part) question: You seem to think that the government should have given special permission to one group of football fans, under threat of violence, and the rules should not apply to them if permission is refused - and yet when that idea is challenged, you jump to 'whataboutery' by bringing up Kenmure street. Do you think that people in Kenmure street were given permission to gather? If not, then how is it in anyway relevant to your argument, other than pointless whataboutery that doesn't hold water?
by
TheMalgor
(Tue 25th May 2021 3:30pm)
So now you want to equate the two \*and\* pick and choose reality? Were my questions too hard, or did the answers just make you feel bad, so you decided to try to 'win' by getting the last word, and sadly picked something asinine instead of the clever gotcha you think it is? Did you forget that the whole point - the point you are choosing to argue about - is that they were not allowed to use the stadium due to covid?
