  • Asian looking women are often heavily fetishized, look at the fact that they've got dedicated pornography categories and how people talk about dating Asian women etc. "Exotic" looking people are often fetishized in general, but Asians often are assumed to behave in certain ways or have certain traits due to westerners perceptions of them. A lot of the anime crowd are especially bad, and expect Asian background women to behave like characters from anime, or see them as a chance to date a "real life anime girl" or such. • The maths and physics departments are a whole other case. Last year right up until the cancellation of 1st year exams we were being told that they would still happen, be the same time length, still be closed book etc. They were pretty pissed off when we were let through automatically. Now the physics department is still insisting that we shouldn't get any extra time for online exams, despite the fact that the tests we've had this year have been markedly more difficult than previous years (which they deny but is clear from examining the papers). Our head of course has even told our reps that there's no difference in the teaching between this and previous years so there's no leniency policy, while also insisting that we shouldn't complain about anything because the lecturers have it very hard this year. Oh, and when we tell them that half the course are stressed and falling behind and mentally broken, she just doesn't believe it. We're being given no sympathy for our situation this year and honestly at times it feels like we're being treated with contempt. by The_Flurr (Wed 3rd Feb 2021 9:36am)

  • Well, there's a twofold problem. Firstly that having that percentage be social housing leads to developers increasing the prices of the rest. This in turn makes them even less affordable, and increases the number of people who can't afford housing, increasing demand for social housing. Additionally, there's still quite a few loopholes that developers will use to get out of building any social housing. If they claim that they'll be at a loss for instance, they can be allowed not to. Or in a lot of cases, they just have the right ear and fill the right pockets. Honestly, social housing is not something the private sector can solve. We need a better system than relying on profit based corporations. by The_Flurr (Mon 6th Dec 2021 7:41pm)

  • Goddamn, we need to start a small gigs club by The_Flurr (Tue 11th Jan 2022 11:32pm)
  • That is a point that people don't really talk about. There is a need for housing for housing that isn't bought/owned. Students, or people who don't expect to stay in one place for a long time, it makes no sense for them to buy. There is actually a need for rented accommodation, and as long as the rents are fair and the properties maintained, I don't see the problem. by The_Flurr (Mon 17th Jan 2022 1:33pm)
  • I completely agree. I don't disagree with private renting existing, but it should be strictly regulated. by The_Flurr (Mon 17th Jan 2022 3:02pm)
  • Other than hotels or hostels, yes. by The_Flurr (Mon 17th Jan 2022 7:02pm)
  • There's a host of issues with that though. How do you fairly assign free accommodation when it will be of varying size, quality and location? How do you decide who is eligible and needs it? Taking as an example young adults, if accommodation no longer has cost, then the new barrier for moving out from their parents house is now whether the state decides that they are eligible. How do you decide who gets accommodation where? Does accommodation in town centres get prioritised to those who work locally, to families, to students who study nearby, or to those already living there? Is it fair reassign retirees from their homes to other housing to allow workers to live nearer their workplaces? Or do you force those workers to commute further even though the retirees have no material benefit to staying? This only works if you have limitless accommodation of roughly equal quality in all of the places that it is needed. Our current situation with landlords is bad, but free housing to all isn't feasible, it's a logistical and ethical nightmare. by The_Flurr (Mon 17th Jan 2022 9:57pm)
  • Yes we can, she still pulled that trigger, even if nobody undid it. Plenty of people absolutely blame her for selling off the country's social housing and making it near impossible to build replacement. Around 70% of the homes sold through Thatcher's right to buy scheme are now owned by private landlords, and the tax money is now used to rent many of those back for people on low income. Honestly, changing shop opening times isn't exactly a big positive in the face of all the negative shit. Yknow, like brutality in NI, brutality on the miners, mass privatisation, and absolutely pissing away all of the UKs profits from North Sea Oil. by The_Flurr (Sun 23rd Jan 2022 3:11am)
  • Democratic People's Republic of Korea. You ready to call North Korea a democratic Republic? They also absolutely did not "nationalise everything". The Nazis heavily privatised huge swathes of the government and public services. by The_Flurr (Sun 23rd Jan 2022 12:56pm)
  • Honestly, the negative of the loss of the countrys social housing, followed by legislation that made it near impossible to replace, far outweighs the positives of greater homeownership. I got the figure wrong, but 40% of previously council owned houses now being privately owned, and a large proportion of those now being rented *by* the council, is a fucking joke. It's actually pretty fucking difficult to just replace the whole country's social housing. Beyond cost, there's a lack of suitable places to do so. Housing needs to be in places where there is work, access to shops, access to recreation, schools, transport, more. Most of the sites that would be suitable have already got previously built and sold blocks in place. Then there's the fact that due to Thatcher's policies favouring London and the South, there's a complete imbalance of where housing is needed. Not many people wanted to work in coal mines, but she shut said mines without making any effort to support or create new work in the coal mining towns. She was also the one who sent the police to do the beatings, and her policy was very publicly to be brutal to them. As for your thoughts on the Nazis, you're just plain wrong. The Nazis were strongly capitalistic, and privatised to an incredible degree, including their rail network (previously the largest public network in Europe), four publicly owned banks, shipyards, public utilities and social work. Their labelling of themselves as National Socialists was a tactic to get elected, by drawing voters away from actual socialist groups. It was using this funny little invention called lying. Hell, once they were in power, who did they send to the work camps? The communists and socialists. by The_Flurr (Sun 23rd Jan 2022 1:21pm)

Kids are too young to give meaningful consent to have photos and videos posted online, and I don't believe that parents have de facto rights to share images or stories about their child publicly. by The_Flurr (Thu 21st Jul 2022 7:02pm)

  • I agree, but I'd also extend this to the UK as a whole. There's very little media or art that depicts working class people as anything other than miserable, angry criminals. Even the more controversial or edgy content we get is in a middle class setting. by The_Flurr (Thu 21st Jul 2022 7:08pm)
  • I don't fully disagree with you, but it would be refreshing if the council's response to issues would be honest. When people petitioned for more bins, I'd rather they outright said "we don't have the money" than whatever bullshit they gave about the bins being underused. You may be right about the centre, but other parts of the city you can rarely find a bin not overflowing. by The_Flurr (Thu 21st Jul 2022 7:05pm)
  • Seriously? I'm the bad guy for not wanting the centre to be covered in broken glass and piss? Not wanting council money to go this shit? by The_Flurr (Thu 21st Jul 2022 9:14pm)

  • Football may be baked into the culture. That doesn't mean I can't criticise people for not showing common decency in a public place. Go see the football if you want, have a drink after, don't take over a public area, cover it in trash and bodily fluids, and leave it for the council to clean up. I swear I saw more outrage against the climate protests than the football crowds, even though they lasted a far shorter time and caused less damage. by The_Flurr (Thu 21st Jul 2022 9:13pm)

  • It's a huge, ugly, loud and inconvenient mess that bisects the whole city. It's slow, inconvenient and even dangerous to have to cross. It causes a tonne of noise and air pollution. by The_Flurr (Fri 30th Dec 2022 7:55pm)
  • If you actually kinda believe that you're something of an idiot. Cars won't become illegal unless something catastrophic happens. Regardless we should be encouraging a society where personal vehicles are less necessary. It's inconvenient because it fucking bisects a major city, making it much harder to go from one side to the other by foot or by vehicle. "Use a bridge done" is a fucking brain dead take. In many areas there are no bridges. They often don't cross at convenient or even sensible places. At many points it takes as many as four different sets of lights to cross the fucking spaghetti mess that is the M8. I'd replace it with either a bypass around the city and a much less significant road in its current place, or by cutting it deeper and covering it to create a tunnel. by The_Flurr (Fri 30th Dec 2022 9:26pm)
  • But governments would rather spend money barely maintaining what we have than a lump sum improving it. by The_Flurr (Fri 30th Dec 2022 10:32pm)
  • There's no such thing as non-polluting cars. Even electric cars have a shitty environmental footprint. Cars are also just shitty for infrastructure and efficiency. I'm not in favour of an outright ban but designing our settlements around them is disastrous. As someone in the west end who has frequently had to cross to the east, by vehicle and foot, it's a complicated mess. The M8 is extremely practical for those wishing to come into Glasgow from the outside but a fucking pain for those actually in it. Trusting individual responsibility tends to fail. That's why we had to have enforced lockdowns, why we have drink driving laws and licensing in the first place. I don't see that we would. Bypasses have managed to be built around enough other cities. by The_Flurr (Fri 30th Dec 2022 10:37pm)

  • *Oh ffs, I'm not a homophobe.* *I'm worried about my children being indoctrinated with homosexual ideology (this is happening).* *I want my effeminate son to be comfortable being himself without his peer group telling him he's gay!* Denying the validity of trans people, and pushing the narrative that trans people are attempting to groom and indoctrinate is transphobia. You'll deny that because you don't want to accept the bad label, but it's the case. The furor around Rowling is far more than her just opening a single sex RC centre. She could have done so without filling the board with outspoken TERFs and making such pointed statements. This was a blatant political stunt. I'd recommend actually looking into the company that Rowling is keeping these days, such as self described theocratic fascist Matt Walsh. https://youtu.be/Ou_xvXJJk7k I'm curious, if your son decided that they were trans and came out to you, would you accept that? • I can, I did. Some things have pretty circular definitions. Many things are impossible to precisely define because they depend on perception and judgement. But I must insist, give me your own definition. by The_Flurr (Sun 8th Jan 2023 9:07pm)
  • Yes, they really do. Many things are essentially defined as what we consider to be them. Hell, it's pretty much the basis of learning. You see a thing your parents call a car, and then using characteristics of that first car you identify others. It's a little cliche, but I'd challenge you to give a definition for a chair that includes all chairs but excludes all non chairs. Realise that essentially, a chair is just an object that has characteristics of a chair that we learn, but that there is no strict checklist. Circular definitions are not the same as circular arguments. You could in theory identify as anything you like, but this shows your bad faith. When I say identify, I obviously don't mean saying so in the moment. I of course mean the personal identity that somebody holds. If I were to lie and say that I was Chinese, I still wouldn't personally identify as Chinese, as I consider myself English. Somebody could then come along and call my bullshit. Hell, this is partly why the GRC is actually important, because it allows trans people to provide proof of their sincerity of their identification. You can withhold your definition if you wish, but it suggests strongly that you don't have one that would support your stance when examined. Seems like you lack confidence in defending your stance. by The_Flurr (Sun 8th Jan 2023 9:27pm)
  • So by your definition, a sofa, a bench, a motorcycle, a cushion, are all chairs? Correct is not an identity, its a boolean value. Again, bad faith. Once again, you sidestep giving your own definition. by The_Flurr (Sun 8th Jan 2023 9:49pm)
  • A motorcycle is a type of chair now. You're really sticking to this? Do you truly, in your heart, believe yourself to be black and 50 years old? Or are you arguing in bad faith? by The_Flurr (Sun 8th Jan 2023 10:10pm)
  • A chair is a type of seat, not all seats are chairs. That said, including a seat does not make a thing a seat. Is a car a seat? Is a church a vicar? Not knowing your age and racial characteristics I couldn't specifically. Although I could say a little something about how race, like gender, is actually a construct with no rigid definition. There is no singular gene or specific train that makes a person black. Age is something much more specifically defined, as years have quantitative definition. That said, the way that age is measured varies by culture. In the west you are considered to age a year every birthday, in some Eastern cultures you gain a year at the beginning of the calendar. by The_Flurr (Sun 8th Jan 2023 10:36pm)
  • Some things are defined specifically, some things aren't. Some people can be wrong in how they identify, yes. Someone who identifies as a lizard is blatantly not. Lizards are defined more specifically than gender. I'm going to say once more, you've yet to give your own definition. It seems to me that you would just define a woman as who you say is a woman. by The_Flurr (Sun 8th Jan 2023 11:22pm)
  • Sounds like you can't produce your own consistent definition honestly. You shouldn't need me to produce one to produce your own. You also just can't seem to understand that definitions are based on usage and observation rather than rigid criteria. There are many things, like chairs, that are defined by our perception. But here, have another, define what a game is. by The_Flurr (Sun 8th Jan 2023 11:35pm)
  • Is eating a game? Is masturbation a game? Is scratching ones back a game? All are activities that are enjoyable. My point is that it is damn near impossible to produce a definition for which counter examples cannot be found, and that I am well aware that you intend to poke holes in any definition I produce. Whilst of course, refusing to offer your own definition for me to critique. We are both well aware that you are arguing in bad faith here. However, I shall reiterate once more. A woman is an adult human female. An adult human who identifies as female, and with characteristics deemed female by their culture. by The_Flurr (Sun 8th Jan 2023 11:54pm)
  • I did, several times. You didn't answer mine. You're arguing in bad faith and you know it. I do feel the need to ask, do you know any trans people? by The_Flurr (Sun 8th Jan 2023 11:56pm)
  • I have multiple definitions. The other guy kept using shitty arguments to pretend I didn't. by The_Flurr (Mon 9th Jan 2023 12:04am)
  • And you still won't give yours. Bad faith. by The_Flurr (Mon 9th Jan 2023 12:02am)
  • Said secondary sexual characteristics are also common to trans women, and even your first definition accepts that there are those without XX chromosomes accepted in the definition. I would now ask, how do you decide who is and isn't a woman? Do you require seeing somebody's genes and genitals before you label someone a woman? by The_Flurr (Mon 9th Jan 2023 12:08am)
  • So you see a person on the street and ask to see their genes before making a judgement? by The_Flurr (Mon 9th Jan 2023 12:20am)
  • So until you see somebody's chromosomes, you don't define them one way or another, and regard them as uncategorised? by The_Flurr (Mon 9th Jan 2023 12:57am)
  • If your definition of woman is strictly someone with xx chromosomes (of course except for those rare intersex exceptions), then you cannot tell a woman without seeing their genes. Or would you perhaps identify somebody's gender upon seeing them by characteristics that are not genetic? by The_Flurr (Mon 9th Jan 2023 1:12am)
  • Damn, Ted 2, the height of science. Denying somebody the identity that they live is treating them unfairly and being nasty. Such things have led to suicides. My point is, you would make assumptions on somebody's gender without seeing their chromosomes? So you can confirm that there are characteristics that you would associate with being female that are not genetic? It must be very strange living a life where you live in constant limbo of what gender everyone around you is. I trust you had your own genes checked to make sure? Wouldn't want to make that mistake. by The_Flurr (Mon 9th Jan 2023 1:25am)
  • So until you had your genes checked, you didn't know your own gender for sure? by The_Flurr (Mon 9th Jan 2023 1:44am)
  • I think you can see my point though. Am I to believe that the vast majority of people do not know their own gender for certain? by The_Flurr (Mon 9th Jan 2023 1:50am)
  • Oh yes, I just hoped you'd confirm it so others could see that it's quite silly. A person could appear female, could have female genitals, female characteristics such as fat content and breasts, have no adams apple, could identify as female, yet you'd still claim them to possibly be a secret man, even to themselves. For that matter, if somebody appears, presents and identifies as female, but has different chromosomes, why exactly does that make a difference? Why exactly should that suddenly change how they are treated? by The_Flurr (Mon 9th Jan 2023 1:55am)

  • Landlords don't *provide* shelter they charge for it. Those homes would exist without a landlord charging rent. There's not enough council houses due to Thatcher selling them off and blocking new building. Around 60% are now being gouged by private landlords. by The_Flurr (Sun 4th Jun 2023 2:13pm)
  • You don't have a good grasp on what communism is do you? by The_Flurr (Sun 4th Jun 2023 3:19pm)
  • Would the home exist without a landlord to scalp them? Yes I can blame Thatcher. Her policies gutted the supply of council houses and the ability to build more for generations. Provide means to offer, to create, to make available. Landlords are actively standing between people and homes. Toll booths don't provide roads. Lmao, if landlords are to be commended for "taking on risk", then you can stop whining about losing money. That's the risk you took on. by The_Flurr (Sun 4th Jun 2023 3:17pm)
  • You *really* don't get what socialism or communism means do you? by The_Flurr (Sun 4th Jun 2023 5:22pm)
  • I'm struggling to believe you're real. The house I live in would exist with or without a landlord who bought it years after building. People are unhappy they're getting priced out of a home in general. Bottom line dude, you're providing nothing of value to society. Any home you let put existed before you bought it, and might have been bought by someone who planned to live in it without you. by The_Flurr (Sun 4th Jun 2023 5:25pm)
  • I know there would be some pushback, but there really needs to be some sort of licensing and mandatory insurance for this industry. Found to be a cowboy? Lose your license, everyone knows not to hire you. Your victims get covered by your insurance. by The_Flurr (Tue 6th Jun 2023 10:59am)
  • It's why I'm fully in favour of a licensing/registry program. To trade, you have to pass a test and have insurance. If you fuck up or fuck people over, your insurance pays your victim, your license is revoked. by The_Flurr (Tue 6th Jun 2023 11:01am)
