Interests:

  • Not English originally but grew up there and have a strong English accent, moved to Scotland for uni as well: your fellow students won't care and you'll mainly just get lighthearted banter and imitations. The locals on the other hand can be more hostile in my experience; I've been been into the wrong pub on occasion and been greeted with hostility and sometimes outright aggression by regulars at the bar when they've heard me open my mouth to order a drink. Also know a girl from Bristol who was forced to drop out of a different uni here because she was bullied so much by the others in her halls for being English. Another commentor was downvoted for saying it as well but they were right in saying you should also exercise caution around SNP/independence types, most Scottish nationalists to be fair are open and welcoming but there is still a significant minority of xenophobes and "bravehearts" who will give you a hard time (ironically though, some of the strongest anti-English sentiment I've encountered has come from hardcore Protestant/Rangers types). Overall though the majority of people up here have been welcoming and friendly and you don't have anything to worry about for the most part. It should also be noted that where I studied was far smaller and less cosmopolitan than Glasgow. by canspray5 (Fri 1st May 2020 5:02pm)
  • Having lived in both I would say Glasgow is very similar to the big Northern cities like Liverpool, Manchester, Leeds, Newcastle. Especially true in terms of nightlife which both Glasgow and those cities are renowned for, more so than cities like Edinburgh, Birmingham, Southampton etc. by canspray5 (Wed 10th Jun 2020 8:10pm)

  • Job sites are teeming with these, don't know why they won't remove them, all the same format promising an annual salary and commission on the advert only to be told in an interview (that about 50 other people seemingly also got that day) that its actually some shite like door-to-door selling tat or dodgy energy deals, almost entirely commission based. Also to watch out for are Grayson Independent Marketing and Prism Marketing. by canspray5 (Mon 31st Aug 2020 8:17pm)
  • That whole area is confusing in that respect, hard to know whats Finnieston and whats Anderston/Kelvinhaugh/Woodlands/Charing Cross/Yorkhill etc. Estate agents would have you believe its all Finnieston of course by canspray5 (Sat 2nd Jan 2021 9:13pm)
  • Superb response pal, cheers, where did you learn of these? by canspray5 (Sat 2nd Jan 2021 11:34pm)
  • Some street signs in town have area names on them and Anderston is written as far east as Wellington Street But cut off in the north by St Vincent Street where Blythswood Hill starts appearing on the signs by canspray5 (Sun 3rd Jan 2021 8:00pm)
  • Where do you place Kelvinhaugh? by canspray5 (Sun 3rd Jan 2021 8:09pm)

  • Never had worse than PurpleBricks, simply will refuse to fix anything by canspray5 (Tue 2nd Feb 2021 7:56pm)
  • Never noticed much difference between our tap water and the tap water where I used to live in Northern England. I guess some areas have similar topography. I guess most Scots first time visiting England is London which would explain this meme by canspray5 (Wed 3rd Feb 2021 7:24pm)
  • Nationalists will still find a way to blame the English when COVID cases spike in Scotland after this by canspray5 (Sun 7th Mar 2021 8:01pm)
  • Whats the problem with the city centre high rises like some have said in this thread? Anderston and Cowcaddens are right outside the "financial district" and Townhead and Drygate seem "studentified"? Never seen any bother round them, for a small budget I don't see how they could be worse than a tenement on the outskirts in a "rough" area? by canspray5 (Mon 24th May 2021 5:22pm)
  • Wee guy in Merchant City walking around chanting "If you're from England you're a wanker", didn't realise there was a group of Geordies on a stag do behind him, went about as well for him as you can imagine by canspray5 (Mon 12th Jul 2021 12:05am)

  • Saw your other comment OP, if your budget is £900 a month for rent you can afford to live most places in Glasgow, UK property websites like Rightmove and Zoopla are good tools. Most people in Glasgow will look at you funny if you say you moved from America to Govan. by canspray5 (Mon 26th Jul 2021 4:53pm)
  • Which pub was it? Am assuming it was a certain establishment in the Raploch by canspray5 (Mon 9th Aug 2021 5:26pm)
  • Jackies Bar that was called, shut down for about a decade, I assumed it was Vinneys on Drip Road, although I imagine that along with Claymores (also gone) is where most of their clientele migrated to by canspray5 (Tue 10th Aug 2021 12:08am)
  • They actually have (or had) one of the most notorious firms in Scotland, think it was Airdrie they hit headlines for having a pitched battle with in the centre of town. by canspray5 (Tue 10th Aug 2021 4:55pm)
  • Not got kids or anything but was interested in what folk were saying about the list 1, 2, 3 addresses in relation to the house being old or new; does that mean a child from a house on Munro Road will have a better chance than a child from Jordanhill Cres, who in turn will have more luck than somebody from Southbrae Gardens? by canspray5 (Thu 26th Aug 2021 7:31pm)
  • Not a student myself but come on man the Uni has been in the West End longer than any of us have been in Glasgow, you knew what to expect when you paid stupid money for a flat near Byres Road by canspray5 (Sat 28th Aug 2021 1:14pm)
  • Main reason: they're on their holidays, like how you can go to Tenerife, Kavos or Ibiza and find a large amount of Scots, Old Firm pubs, things catered towards Scots etc. More people than usual are staying in the UK for a holiday for obvious reasons. The local Scots? They're all at work. Other reason: Immigration, Scotland is generally accepting of immigrants and certain immigrant groups gravitate to certain areas e.g same as how there's Pakistanis in Pollokshields and Romanians in Govanhill, English folk head for the country. In this case, our current ruling party believes that all immigrants are Scottish. So you actually did hear lots of Scottish folk, they probably just didn't sound how you expected. by canspray5 (Sat 28th Aug 2021 1:12pm)
  • I actually think immigrants should get a say in the independence debate. Its their country too now. by canspray5 (Sat 28th Aug 2021 2:35pm)
  • Aye they wouldn't be in the residential part of Anderston I suppose , more the bit in town by canspray5 (Sat 25th Sep 2021 3:07pm)

  • Its probably best to stay at home, Scotland's anti-English racism often comes to a nasty head when both teams play on the same day. Better safe than sorry. by canspray5 (Sat 9th Oct 2021 3:23pm)
  • No, apparently its pretty woeful, if you want specifically Jewish cuisine theres a couple of places within walking distance of Giffnock station. A lot of Polish delis will probably do bialy specifically as well. Why the history and actions of PP doesn't bother you I can not understand but hey even if eating is all you care about its worth giving it a miss anyway. by canspray5 (Tue 12th Oct 2021 1:57pm)

  • Aye its all gone now happily. Always been a traditionally "blue" area but these days its student land, more accurate graff these days would be "Partick is expensive" by canspray5 (Tue 19th Oct 2021 7:25pm)
  • I worked for a basically identical outfit to Kura in Glasgow contact centres, modern day Victorian workhouses so they are. Inbound agent is the worst job going anywhere, would honestly do anything else. by canspray5 (Wed 20th Oct 2021 12:48am)
  • Theres a pure annoying American woman at Sleazys every time, does her acapella then wont shut up for anybody else's performance. Apparently she's some sort of long term regular though so nobody says anything by canspray5 (Wed 20th Oct 2021 12:50am)

  • No Parmo here will compare what you can get in the north (down south). Manjaros is your best best, think Ambala does one as well but both are tiny and neither compares to a proper Boro parmo. Surprising because you'd think they'd be right up a Glaswegian's street. by canspray5 (Sun 24th Oct 2021 1:36am)

  • UK Halloween is almost exclusively for the children, if you live in a flat with a close (shared) door like a tenement they probably won't knock for you unless they live in the building. The only adult activities involve drinking and nightclubs. However we do have an exclusively British holiday on November the 5th called Bonfire night/Guy Fawkes night where you can go to festival-style events with bonfires, fireworks and food stands, maybe some fairground games. But I'm not sure if this will be happening the same due to COVID by canspray5 (Tue 26th Oct 2021 3:55pm)
  • Wish people here would realise that council elections aren't going to have any impact on the independence debate and just vote somebody competent in to run this city by canspray5 (Tue 26th Oct 2021 8:17pm)
  • What pubs was this successful in? I can't imagine anywhere in Glasgow I'd do this but fair play if it worked out for you by canspray5 (Fri 29th Oct 2021 2:20am)
  • Where is there even council houses in the west end? by canspray5 (Tue 2nd Nov 2021 6:06pm)
  • Ah fair enough, I imagine the outer bits of Partick/Broomhill are mostly council tbf. I used to stay west but not "west end" and ended up going southside because of the prices. Forgot about those flats down the haugh near the hospital where I guess your mum stays near, just immediately thought of Hillhead or Kelvinbridge tenements tbh by canspray5 (Wed 3rd Nov 2021 1:25am)

  • The motorways were what I thought but Bellahouston post office and business park are north of the M8 and Dumbreck train station seems to be in Bellahouston while Dumbreck road is in the western part of Pollokshields by canspray5 (Wed 24th Nov 2021 10:06pm)
  • Rannoch Street could arguably be in a smaller locale called Holmlea by canspray5 (Thu 25th Nov 2021 3:10am)
  • That more than clears it up mate thanks, aye the train stations here make no sense and even google maps labels areas wrong. Don't think I've ever seen a complete map of Glasgow districts by canspray5 (Thu 25th Nov 2021 10:54am)

  • You should ask in a local Barrhead facebook group, seems to be one called "When I grew up there barrhead" among a few other community groups. These "Memories of (place name)" groups are quite popular in the UK for folk to share old photos and ask if anybody knew certain people from back in the day. by canspray5 (Mon 6th Dec 2021 12:49am)
  • Men and women, all that same design as well either the teddy with its head off or the one with the paint splash. Its expensive as fuck as well by canspray5 (Mon 6th Dec 2021 9:57pm)
  • I have lived in both, but never for uni. Leeds is probably a better "student city"; its far more diverse and international, there are no government restrictions on nightlife like in Glasgow, and basically a whole quarter of the city is "student ghetto". Its much cheaper as well. Glasgow is a much better looking place however, for example the student's favourite area the "west end" is a heritage area of mansions and tenements compared to Leeds where it can be quite dirty and dangerous. Glasgows also more "cultural" than Leeds, i.e more concerts, festivals etc. It also gets far better investment in its transport so you'll have a lot more options for living areas within 10 minutes journey of uni. What they both have in common is a reputation for friendly people, and being 30 minutes from some of the UK's best scenery. As well as junkies passed out on the main streets and violent racist football fans. by canspray5 (Wed 8th Dec 2021 3:29am)

  • Is there actually any evidence of people from London/England driving up house prices? Why here and not other "improving" cities like Manchester and Leeds? • There isn't a highland community as such as far as I'm aware. Someone from the highlands could move anywhere in the U.K and fit right in due to identical culture/language etc, the same is even true of the Irish nowadays and arguably any anglosphere country, so there's not really a need for a "community" separate from mainstream Glasgow. by canspray5 (Sat 15th Jan 2022 5:31pm)
  • What do you consider to be Glasgow's "highland community"? by canspray5 (Sun 16th Jan 2022 7:16pm)
  • Said it yourself mate... history books. There is no distinct highland community today. by canspray5 (Sun 16th Jan 2022 8:00pm)
  • I know lots of people from my hometown here as well, I definitely wouldn't consider it a distinct community in Glasgow like the Chinese and Pakistani diaspora though. by canspray5 (Sun 16th Jan 2022 8:05pm)
  • Big fan of the Park Bar actually, favourite haunt of the local hipsters and students from down south, popular with Celtic fans as well. Did a ceilidh night before lockdown, if thats evidence enough of a thriving and distinct community for you then fair enough. I know a few of the regulars though (who would also drink in places like Two Ways) from when I stayed in Anderston and if I asked them about a "highland community" they'd look at me like I had three heads. I understand completely that the idea of an old-timey traditional "highland community" in the big city is appealing, and even romantic, but I'm sorry to say that it just does not exist in 2022. by canspray5 (Sun 16th Jan 2022 8:26pm)

Best way to contact them is to go on live chat, they'll give you a form to fill in for a reduction, then a refund for what you paid. Royston and Bridgeton going around asking if anybody has spares for the game on Tuesday. Finnieston, Hillhead, Shawlands and Govanhill have formed a group together and loudly debate their favourite 1960s avant-garde mordernist Bosnian directors. • They are two different areas so it depends, can you give us a street or a scheme? Because Tradeston isn't very residential at all other than a certain notorious block of flats. If the apartment is not in aforementioned development its more likely to be ok, although with it being an industrial area it will be very quiet after midnight. Laurieston on the other hand is much more residential and it varies by area. Bridge Street/Eglington Street gets a lot of traffic after midnight because of the 24h shop and because its a main road, there's usually drunks walking back from town around this time which might make some uncomfortable. Then into Lauriston itself it depends whether you're in the northern part close to the Clyde, the old shemes, the new schemes or the private rent new builds. by canspray5 (Thu 14th Jul 2022 6:37am)

I ran into some guys from my home town recently when I was out with friends and the first thing they said is "why do you sound so Scottish?". The problem is, unless you experience this there's no way to explain it to other people, so my best advice would be to remember that this happens to you, if you're very conscious of it you will realise you're doing it more often and adjust accordingly. by canspray5 (Sun 28th Aug 2022 2:29pm)

Asylum seekers get chased out of areas like Baillieston, Barmulloch etc and a lot of Glasgow folk are very racist unfortunately. • Couple of things popping up in that area recently like Golf Fang, that pottery place and some art studios. Think the wasteland is getting flats too. Cheapside Street is a fascinating little anomaly in between the city centre, the motorway and the "New" Anderston. It, along with the Blythswood Court flats and the remains of the Anderston centre seem to be the only remaining bits of evidence of the post-war developments in that area. That bit of Glasgow has been knocked down and rebuilt so many times, and now is being swallowed on each side by the estate-agent preferred "Finnieston" and "City Centre", but until they rename the train station we'll always have our Anderston by canspray5 (Tue 6th Sep 2022 10:36pm)
  • Wouldn't want to call anybody's home rough or generalise a whole areas, but there are a few specific parts. Saracen Cross can be intimidating even during the day time. I think there's a couple of streets to the east of there that the locals call "The Jungle", and that's compared to the rest of Possil. Union Street in town as most on here know is thoroughly unpleasant to walk down, people drinking, smacked out, fighting, screaming etc. Keppochhill area although no doubt perfectly safe can feel very eerie and isolated especially considering its position between the much busier Springburn and the modernised Port Dundas; the Springpark Bar is aesthetically the roughest I've seen in Glasgow I think. Royston also seems a very "insular" place, walking down the main street after dark you feel like every cunt is staring right at you. Milton is still old school Glasgow gang territory it seems and often has nicked cars doing doughnuts round the field. I'm assuming that's what you meant by "worst", some may prefer those areas to the pretentiousness of Hyndland and Kelvinside, or the vegan supermarkets and overpriced cafés of Govanhill and Strathbungo. Personally, the most unpleasant place is Robroyston, street after street of poorly built, massive soulless newbuilds with almost no transport connections. by canspray5 (Tue 6th Sep 2022 10:54pm)

Another option may be the "outer" west of Glasgow, such as Whiteinch, Scotstoun or Anniesland. They will be cheaper than the traditional west end but with a short commute there. Depending how far you would be willing to commute you could go even further out than that and its much cheaper, as Partick train station is very well connected. by canspray5 (Thu 22nd Sep 2022 1:46am)

Can anybody explain their reasoning behind that? by canspray5 (Thu 6th Oct 2022 3:55pm)
  • Assuming from your comments about not leaving the hotel that you're maybe in a bad place mentally. If you want something a bit more serene there's Drumpellier Country Park right next to Coatbridge and the Sumerlee Industrial museum in the town itself. If you do find yourself capable though, Glasgow city itself is quite nice for a stroll, lots of interesting architecture and interesting neighbourhoods, the West end is quite beautiful and has a lot of attractions like Kelvingrove park and museum (free entry). And don't let folk in here put you off, Coatbridge is a bit grey but a lot of London is probably 10x as dangerous as Greater Glasgow by canspray5 (Wed 12th Oct 2022 4:13pm)

There's likely a lot of people who think they live in Partick but are actually in Thornwood, people in Laurieston who reckon they're in the Gorbals, proud Finnieston residents who are actually in Anderston or Yorkhill, folk stuck in Haghill who got convinced by the estate agent it was Dennistoun, anywhere between the M8 all the way up to Auchinairn Road grouped under Springburn, etc etc etc by canspray5 (Sun 23rd Oct 2022 9:41pm)

  • I've actually lived there before. If you're a young woman on your own, you may attract some unwanted attention (there was a thread on here about a lady who lived there and it got bad enough that men would wait outside her close). The youths there can be a bit feral, you would often be awoken to fireworks, or even have them thrown at you in the street as happened to me, I really can not overstate how obsessed the kids there are with fireworks, its really quite unique. A lot of the kids also wish they were London roadmen, so will act in this manner (they also "beef" the kids from neighbouring Govanhill and Paisley Road West, theses wee area rivalries have spanned generations). The road safety situation is also pretty terrible in Pollokshields, particularly Shields Road and Albert drive it feels like there is an almost weekly crash, usually at the junctions. Some have said already that a lot of guys will be speeding through this area in high powered German cars or modified rice boxes. However, everything I've said here is just words of caution, overall the area is quite safe in my opinion, it is becoming quite gentrified now and is usually quite empty in once you get into the early hours (as someone mentioned there's rarely drunks or addicts staggering about because of the area's ethnic composition). Keep your wits about you and you'll be fine. by canspray5 (Sun 20th Nov 2022 8:18pm)

  • We're not going to be able to join the EU, at least for a long time, and we'd have a hard border with our biggest trading partner, so I'd like to see some measures to protect people's jobs and the economy straight away by canspray5 (Thu 15th Dec 2022 2:36pm)
  • SoMo would unironically be a good distinction between the "trendy" Southside most people refer to when they use the term, like Govanhill, Shawlands, etc. and the less fashionable parts like Cardonald and Linthouse by canspray5 (Wed 21st Dec 2022 10:52pm)

  • Or weird out of towners moving here from places like Motherwell and Cumbernauld asking easily Googleable questions because they're confused by a city that's bigger than a ScotMid, one pub and a Chinese. by canspray5 (Mon 26th Dec 2022 11:47pm)
  • The graffiti scene in London used to be mental, [Camden Town tube after Christmas Day 2006](https://www.flickr.com/photos/daveknapik/sets/72157594440789560/) sums it up. By the time the London artists of the 2000s packed it in though, the city was totally gentrified, so new new generation came through, and Bristol became the place to be for artists and alternative folk. by canspray5 (Thu 5th Jan 2023 7:38pm)
  • The trick with going south of the border is not to go too far south. Places like Newcastle, Liverpool and Leeds are ridiculously cheap. by canspray5 (Thu 5th Jan 2023 7:49pm)
  • That's why its so weird that its not bigger news, the BBC loves white podophile gangs and publishing their faces on the front page. Could be that this hasn't gone to trial yet and that's why they don't have full details yet. by canspray5 (Sat 7th Jan 2023 3:46pm)
  • Same party as who runs that council ward, and the council itself, and the national government. People seem to get quite upset if you show dissent against them though so I'll leave it there. by canspray5 (Tue 10th Jan 2023 9:08pm)
  • The country is only going to keep getting more and more populated and demand for housing is going to increase, especially in big cities. Eventually we're going to have to accept blocks of flats as our reality. High-rise living works fine in many other countries, why can't it here? These tower blocks look good aesthetically and tower blocks used to give Glasgow a unique skyline. We will eventually have to revert to that and hopefully we will have learned our lessons and be more successful. by canspray5 (Fri 13th Jan 2023 3:42pm)
  • I love Loch Lomond as much as the next person but I'm stunned you put Glasgow as top of the list for the outdoors compared to Bergen and the Norwegian Fjords by canspray5 (Sat 14th Jan 2023 11:40pm)
  • >more variety of landscape in Scotland Have to disagree, almost all our countryside, as beautiful as it is, is barren hills. Norway has everything Scotland has plus vast ancient forests, huge (real) mountains, fjords, cliffs, Arctic tundra, southern beaches etc, etc. by canspray5 (Sun 15th Jan 2023 1:15am)
  • To be honest Glasgow really underachieves when it comes to beer, Drygate, West, St Mungo, Overtone, etc. are all pretty pish. by canspray5 (Thu 19th Jan 2023 10:33pm)

  • Glad its not just me, I actually hate that about Glasgow nightlife; no quiet pubs for a chat or a date, just 2nd rate live bands or the Spotify pumped up to 100 by canspray5 (Sat 28th Jan 2023 5:12pm)
  • Are these flats quite decent then, and still mostly council? Its a great area to be housed for sure by canspray5 (Thu 2nd Feb 2023 10:52pm)

  • West Yorkshire has the best UK tap water I've tried, Glasgow is definitely top 5 though. I think if any Glaswegian has tried English tap water it'll be when they've been on their holiday in London where it is ghastly hard to the point it marks the glassware. Presumable this is where the Scotland best England worst generalisation stems from. by canspray5 (Thu 25th May 2023 4:38pm)
  • Noticed half the thread saying Leeds. And I have to agree 100%. The city centres are almost identical in looks and layout (have a look at Briggate/Boar Lane compared to Buchanan/Argyle Street). Also have a massive section of the city that is essentially a student ghetto, although the Glasgow West End is quite posh whereas NW Leeds is full of murderers and thieves. Then in both cities the east end is rough as fuck and once you go south of the river it suddenly becomes a desolate post-industrial wasteland. Yorkshire and Scotland are also roughly the same size population with Glasgow/Leeds being their largest cities despite not being the capital (the capital being an older and more affluent city in either York or Edinburgh). Scots and Yorkshire folk are also both really self obsessed chip-on-shoulder folk who think the whole world loves them. by canspray5 (Mon 29th May 2023 11:04pm)

  • Never saw any England paraphernalia in the fanzone or even Glasgow in general, let alone during Scotland vs England. It literally is beyond the bounds of reason for the non-suicidal. by canspray5 (Fri 20th Oct 2023 8:02pm)
  • I used to do this job, I wouldn't wish it on my worst enemy. Making less than minimum wage to stand in the cold and rain for 10 hours all the while getting dogs abuse from random people who saw you as less than human. Even worse for the women, naturally. Saw many a wide eyed smiling student girl who thought it would be a bit of extra beer money while helping a good cause come away crying with a thousand yard stare. This is the job that truly made me hate the public, there really are some awful cunts in Glasgow. People only do this job if there is literally no other option for them by canspray5 (Sun 26th Nov 2023 1:39am)
  • Definitely don't try this, I did this work in my younger years and the low "pay" and awful conditions meant my co-workers were some of the most desperate and outcast people. Telling the wrong one to GTF might result in them employing another time-tested Glaswegian tradition of "kicking your cunt in for being a mouthy prick" by canspray5 (Sun 26th Nov 2023 1:35am)
