  • It's doable but unpleasant, if you're able, get a bike to cycle from Stirling station to the Uni or get the train to Bridge of Allan and walk in from there. Good luck and enjoy your time there! by DementedGael (Sat 7th Mar 2020 4:59pm)

  • I was born in Easterhouse and currently live in Craigend and spend most of my time at the moment nipping over to the Fort and back and honestly it's not too bad but it's certainly not great. The Fort, while a good provider of jobs and somewhat of a focal point of the area, hasn't provided a lot of what's missing in the area and what makes it fee like a bit of a wasteland. What I mean by that is there aren't any local bars and cafes fostering a sense of community like in other areas of the city. Something that makes living here feel like being in some forgotten backwater rather than a part of the city. There are also massive issues with fly tipping and people just not caring about their environment in the council estates, for example, in Craigend at the moment, I can look out of my window and see a wrecked trampoline, sofa and various piles of discarded rubbish, all from a couple of houses. People with this attitude really bring the area down and make it feel like it's not worth staying to try and better the place and instead makes you want to escape. by DementedGael (Wed 9th Dec 2020 2:49pm)
  • Anywhere outside of the west end or city centre is basically bandit country according to a lot of the people here. I attended a meetup and told people I lived in the east end past Dennistoun and people were sucking their teeth as if it was some sort of achievement to make it to town in one piece. Don't get me wrong, the east end is shite though. by DementedGael (Sun 10th Jan 2021 2:47am)
  • Still shut afaik, last time I cycled down that way had to go on the main road from the Royston Road, this was a couple months ago mind but doubt it's been opened again since. by DementedGael (Fri 15th Jan 2021 12:41pm)
  • Thanks for your input. by DementedGael (Sun 17th Jan 2021 1:47pm)
  • I've been using JG cycles for the last year and he's been top notch. Brought my bike in with a blown rear wheel bearing at short notice a while ago and got it sorted in no time. Also got some wheels trued by him for a great price compared to other chain stores I wont mention. The shop dog is also an absolute treasure. by DementedGael (Wed 20th Jan 2021 9:09pm)
  • I'm living up in Craigend near the Ruchazie shops and it's an utter shitehole for the most part. Probably one of the last areas where you can see classic Neds that look like it's still 1995. The area is also completely devoid of amenities like bars, restaurants and cafes. Best not to move further east than the Ford garage on the Edinburgh road to be honest, it's a desolate wasteland. by DementedGael (Mon 25th Jan 2021 1:39pm)
  • If that's your thing check out the Mossvale Crescent shops, genuine bonafide neds of a certain vintage and shite strewn about the place including most recently a built in cooker lying next to the chapel for some reason. I fucking hate it here. by DementedGael (Mon 25th Jan 2021 7:39pm)
  • You must have loads of friends. by DementedGael (Wed 3rd Feb 2021 10:06pm)
  • Live over in Craigend adjacent to Easterhouse and the whole area's a fucking dive, don't go further east than the ford garage on Edinburgh road by DementedGael (Thu 4th Feb 2021 6:45pm)
  • Gonna say the same thing I've said in every thread about moving east of the Ford garage on the Edinburgh road, just don't. by DementedGael (Thu 4th Feb 2021 9:07pm)
  • Replaced a couple of bits of furniture over the weekend and now I'm looking for a charity I heard about ages ago that would collect the old stuff and give it to someone in need, anyone know what it's called or any others that do that? by DementedGael (Mon 15th Feb 2021 11:13am)
  • Perfect, cheers! by DementedGael (Mon 15th Feb 2021 1:49pm)
  • You're correct, taking and holding the lane in traffic is the safest way to cycle, greatly reduces the risk of being cut off and coming a cropper. Sticking to the left gives people the opportunity to overtake dangerously. by DementedGael (Tue 23rd Feb 2021 2:47pm)

  • I will say one thing, since I drive a low stiffly sprung car, it's made me a very careful and slow driver as I'm constantly scanning for suspension destroying holes! by DementedGael (Sun 21st Mar 2021 12:12am)
  • Fellow G33'er between fireworks and kids on 2-stroke quads today I want this place nuked by DementedGael (Sun 21st Mar 2021 9:38pm)
  • I grew up in the countryside where people had the space for quads but never got them for kids as they're well known to be very dangerous, honestly don't understand why people in a bloody city are getting them for kids. by DementedGael (Mon 22nd Mar 2021 10:37am)
  • Really it's at the point where if I'm doing local errands I'll take my dad's massive 4x4 out since it's the only thing capable of putting up with the punishment. Hardly makes sense that a lighter less polluting car isn't suitable for city driving in Glasgow. Especially with the push on to lower emissions. by DementedGael (Mon 22nd Mar 2021 10:40am)

  • I live across the road in Craigend and can conclusively say Cranhill is a shitehole. Improving marginally but still an utter shitehole and like the rest of the area completely devoid of amenities. by DementedGael (Mon 19th Apr 2021 10:01pm)
  • Hon the unions by DementedGael (Mon 19th Apr 2021 11:55pm)
  • Seconding Shawfield Timber, have used them for fences front and back and a load of floorboards in my house. Keep in mind they have a fortnight lead time at the moment and might not have what you need in stock despite what it says on their website. Ordered some fencing for a neighbour recently and they took a few days to tell me that they didn't have the pre-treated wood I ordered in stock but offered a decent discount on the untreated for the inconvenience. by DementedGael (Tue 20th Apr 2021 12:01am)
  • I live in a poor area of the East End and we have every wheelie bin imaginable at each house, however my dumb as fuck neighbour who can't seem to get the wherewithal together to get the council to do a bulk collection of her shite from redecorating is also incapable of following the simple instructions written on the various bins. Recently saw her chucking two full 2ltrs of milk in the blue bin for some unknown reason. So in short, poor people can recycle quite easily outside of tenements, dumb cunts who happen to be poor don't fucking bother. It sort of sums up why so much of this city is a dump, people see one step more than they're willing to take and they take the piss. by DementedGael (Tue 27th Apr 2021 1:21am)
  • Took the opportunity of things opening up again to go for a nights solo wild camping in Galloway forest, only to have the serenity ruined by a bunch of bams from Glasgow shouting and signing football songs till 1am. There's no escape from wankers it seems. by DementedGael (Tue 27th Apr 2021 1:36am)

  • Speaking as someone who drives, it's kind of the point. Car ownership has been a driving (excuse the pun) factor in Glasgow being wholly unpleasant to walk around in. Planners of the 60's based everything around car ownership and now we know it's an absolute disaster this is a good way to ensure less cars in the city and encourage public transport and cycling as modes of transport within the city. by DementedGael (Thu 10th Jun 2021 11:48pm)
  • Those ladders from Lidl are some value. by DementedGael (Fri 11th Jun 2021 12:10am)
  • I live in the East End and entirely agree with this cities public transport options being absolutely and utterly bottom of the barrel. I prefer to cycle into and out of the town as it's absolutely pointless for me relying on public transport after a certain time of night. However, people in Shawlands aren't going to face those issues to the same degree and those who are differently abled and in need of good public transport will be able to avail of it a fair bit easier than the rest of the city at locations like this. The more people who are fucked off and fighting for decent transport solutions that call for it the more likely we are to get it. Like I'd honestly prefer a decent bus service to my area that isn't served by trains rather than taking the bike but nobody cares about folk in G33 or whatever unless it's transport to and from The Fort. by DementedGael (Fri 11th Jun 2021 12:33am)
  • Bar being full of bams you're intentionally missing the point in public transport, it's for people to move around an urban area. Not your own removals or holiday getaway system. Nobody is saying public transport can replace private car/van usage for other use cases, it's for ferrying people about the city as efficiently as possible. Are you expecting an extension to the subway to Loch Lomand or something? The car and van will always be king for travelling out of the city and transporting stuff but the majority of inner city journeys don't call for that so what's your argument now? I've already acknowledged the basic public transport is utter shite in this city so inserting edge cases and non public trans situations isn't helpful. by DementedGael (Fri 11th Jun 2021 1:10am)
  • I think it depends on the area you live in. For example it would take me around 80 minutes to go from my place in g33 to visit a friend in Shawlands via either two busses from different companies or a bus and a train, understandable if I were miles away from the city but I'm not and it shows the lack of connectivity in the areas not directly in the centre where the majority of the cities population actually lives. by DementedGael (Fri 11th Jun 2021 1:53pm)
  • I live just along from where the new development is and frankly the area's still shite. There are no nearby amenities bar The Fort, public transport is shocking and leaves you stranded in town since the x19 follows a timetable as predictable as the weather at night and the boredom of lockdown has resulted in a return of groups of wee bams to the area. by DementedGael (Sat 12th Jun 2021 11:48am)

Still gonna isolate as best I can so as not to spread this about. Careful out there, there's a nasty lurgy doing the rounds. by DementedGael (Wed 1st Sep 2021 9:23am)

  • Cheers for the heads up! Should hopefully be alright for getting a seat if the train is running tomorrow, booked on a quiet carriage. by DementedGael (Fri 10th Sep 2021 12:47pm)
  • Used to live down there and I've done it plenty, my record time was 4hr 15m from Glasgow to Westminster. Moved my stuff out of London last year mid pandemic and did the drive down, carted my remaining stuff from a 4 up to the car and the drive back in one go. Was definitely shattered after that one! by DementedGael (Fri 10th Sep 2021 1:17pm)
  • Amazing, booked a quiet coach window seat at a table facing forward for this trip down to London and the system has given me a rear facing aisle seat on a normal car without a window. The car's also full of chavs going to a hardcore/gabber festival drinking mad dog 20/20 at 7:30 am. Also why do all the guys have the same haircut and the girls the same makeup. It's like looking at a group of slightly randomised NPCs. by DementedGael (Sat 11th Sep 2021 9:48am)

Ran a memory test at midnight and found I've got a bad ram module. The RAM is less than a year old so need to sort an RMA today. by DementedGael (Thu 30th Sep 2021 10:51am)
  • Thanks, already done that when I changed the PSU earlier this week when I thought it was that and had an upgrade lying around anyway. I've identified the bad stick now, thankfully still have another 32gb kit lying in a box so not a massive issue. by DementedGael (Thu 30th Sep 2021 11:35am)

  • Back home with the mother for Christmas, walking on eggshells so as not to set her off, thought I'd managed it only for her to just go off on one. Had to walk away so as not to tell her last Christmas and any other one I had been away from her were the best ones by far. Stuck here till New Years Eve...fuck my life by DementedGael (Fri 24th Dec 2021 4:19pm)
  • At times I hate this place. Night was going well, a lovely Hogmanay with as much good will and positivity as possible only for some cunt to start on me for being "Irish and in the IRA". Genuinely miss London because I didn't have to deal with this shite nearly as often. by DementedGael (Sat 1st Jan 2022 7:07am)
  • It was four daft cunts and it very much ruined my night through no fault of my own. The bigotry in this city really ruins my enjoyment of it. by DementedGael (Sat 1st Jan 2022 8:01am)
  • Climbed The Hidden Valley in Glen Coe yesterday and I'm in bits today. Glad I'm permanent WFH, no way I could get into an office today and maintain my dignity. Hobbling about like an 80yr old. by DementedGael (Mon 24th Jan 2022 8:56am)

  • Returned to power lifting this month after a 2 month hiatus, did my sets followed by a 1 rep max last night that was less than my previous working weight in November. Long road ahead again, serves me right for being lazy. by DementedGael (Mon 31st Jan 2022 10:27am)
  • Dishwasher flipped the 40amp breaker last night so spent half the day dismantling it to see if it was any of the easily replaced control boards, all look grand so must have been the pump which is the only part that could draw that much overcurrent so onto Crumbs on Monday to get a repair. Smashed out a gym session that I really didn't want to do as I was mentally tired, my body came through and set a few new PB's post pandemic. All and all a middling Saturday by DementedGael (Sat 19th Feb 2022 11:30pm)
  • Not exactly what you're asking as I've been powerlifting for about 10 years now as I was a rugby forward and it was a natural progression. However, I'd suggest looking into Powerlifting rather than bodybuilding, it's somewhat similar in its goal but the powerlifting community is very supportive and open to young entrants. Bodybuilding can create a bit of the old dysmorphia as someone else pointed out but powerlifting is all about the lifts and you can push some really impressive numbers without obsessive calorie counting and the other "extra curriculars" that are so common with the aesthetics folk. Extreme Gym might be your best best all round as they've got good coaches in most disciplines and the best thing of all, plentiful power cages. by DementedGael (Sat 19th Feb 2022 11:45pm)
  • It's all about diet really. A lot of powerlifters do go down the road of putting on a lot of fat thanks to massive calorie surpluses without much thought to macros. I'm in this camp because I'm lazy with my diet but it's not the only way. You can powerlift and keep a well defined but powerful physique, check out lifters such as Clarence Kennedy, he's an olympic/powerlifter and looks amazing and he actually did it with a vegan diet surprisingly. He pushes some crazy weights but still looks good. Examples like him are somewhat attainable but keep in mind a lot of the people you'll see online who have amazing physiques and lifts are also juicing. So don't set your standards to unattainable levels and accept that a lot of strength athletes have spent many, many years getting to where they are so don't get disheartened when you're not benching 100kg+, squatting and deadlifting 2.5x bodyweight within a couple of months unless you're particularly genetically gifted. It's a very long but rewarding journey that takes a lot of mental fortitude and dedication. All of which starts with looking after your mental health along with the physical. by DementedGael (Sun 20th Feb 2022 12:16am)
  • The basics for powerlifting are the foundation of all strength sports. Squat, deadlift, overhead press and bench press. If you look up a programme called "Phraks" you'll have a good basis for a linear progression training programme that will allow you to improve these core lifts on a session by session basis. Greyskull llp is a good app to use to track and manage your progress over time(it also has the phraks variant programmed in.). If you decide to go with this lifting scheme it'll seem quite basic and easy at first with only 3 exercises per session but it will quickly become challenging and you can add additional exercises to address weaknesses as you progress. If you effectively track your diet with something like Lifesum you can pretty accurately track your macros too. No need to spend money on either of those apps as they have free versions that can get you to a good place. Only start looking into supplements such as creatine, whey powder and bcaa if you can afford it. Progress can be made steadily just eating normal foods such as eggs, chicken and beef. Try to avoid complexity in training programmes if possible as the only thing that matters is your building strength and staying happy in your work out. by DementedGael (Sun 20th Feb 2022 2:24am)
  • An addendum to this is form is everything. Practice form religiously, ensure you're hitting depth in your squat, even if you feel like an idiot lifting just the bar in the rack, get your form right above all. If it's wrong when you're at lower weights you will only injure yourself down the road. Allan Thrall has excellent videos on correct form for the, main lifts which are no nonsense and accurate. by DementedGael (Sun 20th Feb 2022 2:28am)

  • Got offered two jobs I interviewed for this week. One in London and one that's 100% remote. Money was largely the same so took the remote one. • While I despise the trend of pointless SUV's and crossovers and the ever increasing weight of cars. It's actually our climate that does the most damage to road surfaces on the whole. The constant freeze-thaw cycles for 6 months of the year and constant rain creating drainage issues is infinitely more damaging. The German ministry for transport did an interesting film on how frequency and volume of traffic causes very little wear on the autobahn in comparison to northern European weather. by DementedGael (Wed 10th Aug 2022 9:18am)

  • Think even bigger, all the way to Baillieston to the end of GWR would be incredible. The Edinburgh road section could be completed with relatively little disruption due to it being the width of a 6 lane motorway. by DementedGael (Thu 11th Aug 2022 12:52pm)
  • Finally got a call about one of those new flats at the site of the old Victoria hospital in battlefield and they're having a laugh. £240k for a two bedroom that would come down to £144k with the NSSE scheme. • Airsprung beds factory shop in Queenslie industrial estate. Genuine discount and fuck all salesmanship apart from making sure you'd be happy with the mattress. Case in point, my ol' dad decided he wanted a king sized bed and went down to buy a mattress there. Dad insisted he wanted something firmer than the firm one he already had. Sales guy advised against it saying the extra firm was very firm, lo' and behold a couple years later dad has spent a fortune on mattress toppers and the like because he wouldn't listen. Keep in mind the extra firm was a fair few notes more than the regular firm. Basically they don't try and upsell you and an extra firm is definitely an extra firm. by DementedGael (Sat 17th Sep 2022 12:53am)

  • I'm in a top floor tenement so your experience may differ. I'm pretty good with the cold but work from home and spend a lot of time sat stationary, so I feel the cold then. I've found that a couple of a layers (cotton t-shirt and one or two knitted jumpers) are sufficient to keep me toasty even when the flats cold during the day when the downstairs neighbors are away and don't have the heating on. Long Johns are something I've only just discovered in the last couple of days that have made a world of difference. So much so that I've had the windows open most of the day to keep the place ventilated and been cosy as fuck. I've been resistant to putting on the heating so far as it's been abnormally warm (2-10c). So haven't had a mental heating bill yet. by DementedGael (Fri 2nd Dec 2022 8:55pm)
  • Potential for what is my question? It's a purpose built retail space and can't, without more work than its worth, be repurposed to living spaces or anything else. I'd also have to disagree on it being beautiful. The main public facing side of it is a featureless monolith and the rest of it is just the parking garage. by DementedGael (Mon 5th Dec 2022 12:31am)
  • Yeah that'll fail. by DementedGael (Tue 13th Dec 2022 3:18pm)
  • Just chiming in since I'm in a 3 bed tenement. Experiment with turning the flow temp down bit by bit. I've managed to get it to 43c and been able to maintain 21c in the room I'm in (office for 9hrs, then living room till bed time). Don't have a smart meter yet but have been doing daily gas meter readings and only used 19p of gas each day for the last 3 days with the flow temp at 43c. With the flow temp this low it does take ages for a room to get to temp though. I've also got tado installed so it helps a lot to only heat one room at a time. by DementedGael (Wed 14th Dec 2022 11:34pm)

  • Considering the whole rail network appears to be running on voluntary and unpaid OT that seems fair. Plus complaining about a union getting decent pay deals for their members just sounds like being a crab in a bucket wanting to pull escapees back in. by DementedGael (Thu 2nd Feb 2023 10:52am)
  • Please explain how you see them as against progress and how they're entitled? Acting in their self interest when other unions don't put up any sort of fight for their members for a decade is hardly being entitled, just shows how weak other unions have become. by DementedGael (Thu 2nd Feb 2023 11:17am)

  • Have done Glasgow to London and back. It's grand here, weather's shite but much cheaper for most things. There is a massive difference in the feel of the place and things to do. Felt like in London with it being so transient a lot more folk were willing to build friendships with strangers whereas up here folk are friendly on the surface but don't seem so willing to make new friends as people are in the big smoke. Definitely a different social scene up here. by DementedGael (Wed 22nd Feb 2023 6:35pm)

  • Check how easy it is to remove the wing then check for cars the same as yours breaking on Ebay, most likely the cheapest way to sort it as bodywork is very expensive as just going by the tyre size that isn't a fancy car that would warrant the cost of new panels and spraying. by DementedGael (Wed 26th Apr 2023 10:13am)
  • Once you remove that wing and start digging deeper you'll start to find more and more rust. At that end of the market these days you're best to only tend to anything that prevents it from failing the MOT as the current over inflated market for cars will eventually fall. So by the time you're going to sell it you'll have put a few years worth of wear and tear and money for upkeep into a car that'll be worth maybe £1500 if there isn't a lot more rot going on that you can't easily see. It's unfortunately what happens with all older cars in Scotland, rust gets its teeth in and never lets go. by DementedGael (Wed 26th Apr 2023 8:34pm)

  • I looked into this before. The whole things a racket. You need to have trade insurance to get access. This used to be something you could buy for a month for about £40. Now to prevent folk from doing that and allowing the scummy car traders to protect their over inflated prices you now need to get a full years cover which is around £1k. • Aye, I for one pre-event would go out 2 or 3 times a week with work colleagues and friends. I've been WFH since February 2020 and now just can't be arsed with weekday socialising. Now I try to cram it all into Friday night to Sunday afternoon. Friends who still party have now became house party only folk, almost afraid of going out and about. People's finances have also been massively affected by the way things are and don't have as much spare cash. All my pals are still childless so it hasn't even been that that's sapped their will to go out. Things now revolve around 'big nights' opposed to just going for a few like it was before. Long and short of it is we're all skint and vaguely traumatised from the last 3 1/2 years. I mainly feel sorry for the younger generation that had some key formative years stolen from them. by DementedGael (Sat 4th Nov 2023 12:44am)
