  • I don't personally think there is enough evidence to say today's deportation timing is directly motivated by racism, I'm just telling you why some people do. If the fact that it was Eid today even factored into the immigration officials decision, it was probably simply that today was a day when they were likely to be home, simple logistics, nothing to do with sending any messages. A postman was walking by so I asked him - Easterhouse apparently - and he sat with me at the bus stop til a bus came incase anyone came by and tried to rob me or anything, and he made sure that a wee old lady who had also come to the bus stop was to make sure I got off at the right stop, and she sat with me chatting all the way into town. • I need help, can you explain to me how we aren't in lock-down anymore? I'm convinced we are. by GandyOram (Thu 8th Jul 2021 4:53pm)
  • Thank you very much. So it's just a matter of terminology then. You say restrictions, I still say lock-down. Lock-down is still an applicable term to me as many things are still locked-down; (festivals, nightclubs and football stadiums being the main ones personally). And on top of that, things that are open, like pubs, it's a much diluted affair from what it used to be. I (used to) go to the pub with the hope of meeting new people but now you aren't really allowed to speak to anyone that isn't sitting at the same table as you. And they all now shut at 10/11, so if I finish work at midnight, I have nowhere I can go to enjoy myself after work currently. > How people can claim we’re still in lockdown bamboozles me. Well for me (and therefore many others too) I'd say life is still closer to full lockdown than back to normal. I understand what you are saying, for many people things will be quite close to being back but for anyone who likes a gig, a party or a festival, life is still very much on hold. Yeah I can go to work but then how do I unwind or what do I look forward to outside of work? > you can go on holiday throughout the U.K. by planes trains and automobiles and to other countries based on different levels of precautions being in place. You might be able to but is that really a great idea right now? Even if you were to go on holiday you would likely feel more worried than usual about it all, there's the possibility of wherever you are being removed from the green list at any time, not everything is likely to be open wherever you go and there are likely to be capacity restrictions in the places that are open, much like here, so it's not really the same is it? > You can be in houses with friends and family. I can't have a party though can I? Instead of inviting a group of mates round I need to pick a select few and shun the rest. It's not nice having to exclude people. > So yeah, aside from having to give people personal space and wear a wee bit of fabric on your face in inclosed space I'm talking about events with large crowds, or rather events that rely and thrive on large crowds, where social distancing would not really be a particularly viable option. > there’s little you can’t do. I get that I am an uncouth, uncultured swine who just likes football and loud music but I'm still waiting for most of the fun things I do in life to make a return. All the gyms, hillwalking and online activities in the world won't fill the gap. Apologies if this came across as an argumentative sob story I'm just trying to give perspective on how for some people we are still in a situation much like lock-down, and they would therefore say that we are still in lock-down. Yeah I can go to the park but it's just not the same as being at a festival. I am all for these restrictions, despite my complaints. I'm just pedantically arguing over the word lock-down and whether it applies here. Maybe I'm just trying to argue that life isn't back to normal yet so let's not pretend that it is, or something, I don't know. Hopefully you can see why I might have chosen to keep saying lock-down, despite us technically not being in full lock-down. To me, not being in lock-down means I can do all the hobbies and activities I could 2 years ago. Any form of restrictions are in effect, a form of lock-down. • > there couldn’t have been this many pubs because there probably wasn’t as much variety then I'm pretty sure there were more pubs back then. [This](https://boakandbailey.com/2021/04/the-joy-of-glasgow-pubs-in-1901/) covers a description of Glaswegian drinking habits in 1901. When it is said that even in 1901 people had "done away with the daylight drinking which used to be common among Glasgow clerks a decade or two ago". A description of a typical evening is given as > "Thereby they encourage drinking, if not in one particular public-house, at least in several... the barmen at your elbow makes you unwelcome if you do not drink up and have another, and so your idle person goes out in the wet street, and once more, when the desolation of the rainy night has seized upon him, enters another public-house, to find as before that the relief is short. Then out again, and in once more, and so on till the clock strikes eleven, and the devious direction is home. A natural instinct for comradeship and brightness has driven him from a squalid home into illuminated streets, and from these the weather drives him for shelter to the public-house." So there was indeed less variety, less variety in forms of entertainment, and less variety in ways you could heat and comfort your house, or meet friends, etc. so the variety of pub was really the only option for many men back in the day. Further on > "At a bar he might fall in with men he was ‘weel acquent wi,’ and might share in the round that was going; to withdraw then without returning the favour were the part of a sponge." So drinking in rounds is a remnant from back then (upon arrival you will be bought a drink by someone at the table, but you are expected to stay and drink until its your turn to buy everyone at the table a drink, and that is the only time it is acceptable for you to go home) demonstrating just how much they liked a pint back then too. I can't find any sources so this is potentially nonsense, but I'm sure I've heard/read something along the lines of Glasgow having like 1 pub to every 12 people (I've definitely got the figures wrong but you get the idea) back in the early 1800s. Pre-tenement times, and I don't think they were quite the pubs you think of today, but I wouldn't be surprised if there were a lot more back then; we've been at it for a while. Tennents have been brewing beer at that same site since 1556, for an example of that. They [found an old bar tab attributed to Rabbie Burns](https://www.glasgowlive.co.uk/news/history/robert-burns-pub-saracen-history-17626889) owing money for presumably some 1800s Tennents Ale, and he was known to drink at various (many) other bars (taverns, inns, public houses) in the area and all over Scotland, so there must have been a right good few. by GandyOram (Thu 5th Aug 2021 2:49am)

  • It's not back to those levels though is it? Do the crime statistics or anything like that suggest so? It might feel a bit dodgier in town at night than it has been been the last few years, but that's likely down to the lack of late-night pub and nightclub goers lining the streets at night. Without these potential witnesses and crime deterrents on every street no wonder it feels a bit less safe, it's natural to feel more exposed and vulnerable when out alone in empty streets at night, no matter where you are or who is about. Maybe that does mean it is more dangerous - if there were bad guys in town, you are much more likely to bump into one if you are the only person walking through town. If it's busy you likely wouldn't even notice them but if it's quiet you might get hassled by each and every one, but I don't think there has been any sort of regression in society; it's still the same number of scumbags from previous years, there just isn't the mass crowds of normal people to dilute and distract from them anymore. I reckon things will change for the better once the towns night life makes a return and the dodgy cunts seep back into the woodwork. Obviously there is still some way to go but we've come so far over the decades. by GandyOram (Mon 9th Aug 2021 6:10pm)

  • The problem is that a lot of these clubs turn somewhat of a blind eye to drugs to get people in and put on the nights that they do. It just wouldn't be the same place if everyone was just drinking, and people would just move onto the afters way earlier, so it wouldn't really help the clubs in any way to become more strict with searches. by GandyOram (Sun 17th Oct 2021 1:39pm)
  • I reckon that might be when you are most likely to get spiked, when it's in your hand. The spiker will be able to distract you as he slips something into your drink unnoticed. That way he or she also knows who's drink it is, as it's often not just a case of spiking random drinks to make people ill, there is usually further motive there. Obviously you would never expect a thing because you haven't left your drink down anywhere, and next thing you know you wake up and your last memory was dancing away in the club 8 hours ago. Whether or not you got attacked whilst under the influence will likely depend on how attentive your mates were to your condition in the club. If they didn't see you take a rapid turn for the worse you could end up anywhere really. by GandyOram (Sun 17th Oct 2021 1:46pm)
  • > I’m Irish and catholic Why does that make any difference? Pretty much my entire family is too if that means anything to you. Personally I've got the passport, but I don't subscribe to any religious matters. I have disowned any former pals who harboured bigoted views they couldn't shake (from both sides of the divide) and I spend more time than I'd like to admit arguing with people like these braindead Orange wanks and their ilk. So tell me again, why should I get the fuck out? If it's simply because I'm a Rangers fan then you are a bigot, plain and simple. Tarring all fans with the same brush does no help either, you just get the decent fans backs up and instead of tackling the issue from within we are too busy defending ourselves from ignorant assertions. It's a big mess but wading in with a sledgehammer helps nothing. by GandyOram (Sun 17th Oct 2021 1:58pm)

  • Well do you think it was Police Scotland who called for backup from every police force in the UK, or do you think they were sent by a higher force controlling police operation and coordination the next 2 weeks? Given that Police Scotland don't usually deal with such events and numbers, would it be wise to leave them solely in charge? If Police Scotland were to say "no, we refuse to protect Biden the way he demands", then what? Does Biden just not make it to COP that day? Who's to say the other police forces wouldn't step in and do it anyway under higher orders? By all accounts most of the police in Finneston were English so not exactly got the hallmarks of a Police Scotland operation on it. Should Police Scotland have stopped these police from following orders? What if some other world leaders make security demands the next few days? Should we refuse to entertain them? I'm not saying Police Scotland have been good, but I don't think they are in any position to be deciding much about how this global climate conference is policed. I mean surely they would have remembered that people live on these streets, and factored that into their cordon plans. The fact this was neglected says to me they have been getting orders from elsewhere. by GandyOram (Wed 3rd Nov 2021 6:00am)

You generally need to give it back to make pals though. > so I can imagine an English person experiencing it if they were her Good thing there aren't many then eh? Oh wait, there's fucking tons of them, all having a good time loving life in Glasgow. I've got hundreds of English pals here and far from being abused by the natives, they mostly all seem to call Glasgow home now, love life here and couldn't imagine going back down south. Maybe they just tell me that but that's what I'm mostly hearing the general opinion of Glasgow is. > (I'm in hospitality as a chef for context) I've worked in hospitality in Glasgow for 10+ years and can't say I've noticed anything of the sort you describe. I've probably worked with people from just about every nation in Europe, I honestly struggle to think of a European country I've not worked with a native, so understandably all these places I have worked have been nothing like you describe and everyone has got on brilliantly, fully embracing the diversity of cultures among us. Would be mental if someone didn't like other people who came from other places. Mind you I'm not a chef, but I have met a few chefs in my time with disagreeable views, it does seem like the kitchen is one place you might be more likely to hear some hateful views, so I wouldn't hold something you've heard in the kitchen up as representative of Glasgow as a whole. Sounds like you had one arsehole workmate and now Glaswegians are all racists. > I'm surprised it's not talked about more. Probably because it doesn't really exist. • > I’m not an absolute knuckle dragger so can see how stupid it is. That doesn't mean that everyone else can see how stupid it is. As moronic as it is, it's a bit unrealistic to just hope that the knuckle draggers somehow come to that conclusion too. Particularly when they are targeted by far-right groups (there were reports of a group trying to recruit outside Ibrox recently, although I can't find anything on it at the moment) and the like who are literally just exploiting those who are susceptible to being strung along by these groups. Football is a particularly fertile breeding ground for such things, due to the fans nature to stick together and want to agree on all things. Many football fans simply have no other hobbies. It might seem like a miserable existence to you or me but to that person football (and the fallout) will be about as important a thing as they know. So if all their mates then start to say or do one thing, they are very likely to just go with the flow and copy their mates behaviour, so as not to be shunned from the only group of friends they have in life. Some of them will need to turn a blind eye to their conscience, but it will seem worth it in order to continue their social lives and keep the only friends they have ever had. Or (and more likely I think), they will simply have zero understanding of any of the things they sing about. They either won't have the mental capacity to grasp the ins and outs of a given social or political situation, or will have simply never even tried to learn about anything related. "Aw a care aboot is ma team winnin" is often how these people defend their lack of worldly knowledge. It's exactly how these people end up being the loudest fans, and end up thinking they speak for the whole support when they spew their bile, the Dunning-Kruger effect in full swing. They need educated more than anything else. Maybe the schools could do a better job, but these people aren't gonna teach themselves any different from what they currently know, especially not when they have been convinced by right wingers amongst them that they do have a legitimate reason to be anti-catholic or whatever, and it is in fact patriotic and a great display of loyalty to their nation to act as such. We can see how ridiculous it is, but you just need to see how seriously a lot of people take that kinda stuff to see that it really is pretty ingrained in our society, in the west of Scotland anyway. by GandyOram (Sat 12th Feb 2022 7:37am)

  • > the prospect of getting my cunt kicked in if I express my support of the wrong side to the wrong people This is by far the biggest myth going. I've never once hid what team I support in 30+ years in Glasgow, and I've literally never once been in any trouble. Might get the odd comment from a Celtic fan if I'm in a Rangers scarf or whatever but it's nearly always either meant as a joke or it's someone just making a wee comment rather than being aggressive or confrontational. It really just adds to the fun. Even if you do come across a bitter bigot somewhere they tend not to do anything other than make snide comments, making themselves look utterly pathetic in the process, and these sorts can be easily ignored and avoided if need be. Granted I can only speak for being in Glasgow. I wouldn't want to walk about [Larkhall](https://www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/this-britain/scottish-town-where-green-is-beyond-the-pale-981747.html) in a Celtic top, for example. But then, as I'm not from Larkhall, I might just be making the same assumptions of inevitable sectarian violence that you are about Glasgow. > Like I feel completely locked out of this huge part of the culture. If you were to pick a side and try to get involved I'm 100% sure whatever teams fans it was would welcome you with open arms. Back when I worked in jobs with a lot of international students I used to take people to their first game at Ibrox regularly, and they all seemed to love it every time. So just please don't feel locked out, if you want to pick a team then you absolutely should, it's the best league in the world (maybe not in quality, but it hasn't been completely ruined by money and greed yet, plus the passion and general hilarity surrounding it are second to none) and the majority of Scottish football fans will only be too happy to have a fellow Scottish football fan on board, no matter what team it is. We all do love to hate each other though, the slagging matches between fans are almost as important as the actual football matches, but deep down we do still like and appreciate each other at the end of the day. Typically your more bigoted fans don't even engage in these back and forths with other teams fans, they tend to just keep the hatred amongst themselves until it occasionally bubbles over and there is a wee outburst somewhere that makes the news, but generally they aren't much to worry about, other than the disrepute they bring to both the game and the city. by GandyOram (Sat 12th Feb 2022 8:44am)
  • It's just a football team to me, it's only the dafties who attach any extra meaning to it. Obviously there are a loud minority who would probably rather people like me didn't go anywhere near Ibrox, but that just encourages me to go more than it puts me off, hopefully it annoys them. Most of them don't even see themselves as Scottish, you think I'm gonna take any notice of what these folk think about such things? Maybe I've just been lucky, but none of my mates who support Rangers are anti-Catholic or anti-Irish, and I can't recall having ever working with anyone who was openly bigoted. From my experience, when I have met bigots, they have always, without fail, had one other factor in common; they have all been utter morons in every other sense as well. It's people who literally can't process the world around themselves who resort to holding these views. I'm not gonna waste a second worrying about them. While I do think pretty lowly of these people, I do feel sorry for them somewhat. Most well balanced people, and football fans, have a life outside of football; they have other hobbies, loving families, friends from many different places, etc. But perhaps another common factor amongst the bigots, is that they don't have these things; football (and the shite they attach to it) is their only hobby, and their only mates are fellow football fans. That obviously creates a situation where people can easily be somewhat "radicalised". Bearing in mind that we are talking about people who generally struggle to hold a conversation about much and don't fully understand the world (or at least haven't been educated about it); I strongly suspect that many of them fall into supporting a football team as a means of gaining social acceptance. The only requirement is to support the team and you will be accepted by the fans, and you can just go into the supporters club or wherever and spark up a conversation with anyone you want over your team, etc. and there we go, now everyone can make pals. But then your new pals ask you to come to some orange walk or some shit, and tell you it's all to do with Rangers; most will just go along with it as it's just part of their social group to them, they won't really even think about its meaning other than going on a day out with the pals they once feared they might never have, or maybe they just won't fully understand the meaning at the time, and that's them in and then it's difficult to ever get them to see the wrongs of it. I think it's fair to say that people in general seem to have problems admitting to themselves that they are wrong, and will go down with a sinking ship if it means being able to feel right. (see brexiteers and tory voters for other examples of people behaving like this in recent times). So aye, I'm not too bothered about what they are saying, get it up them. • > the price was £60 to East Kilbride via Clarkston In a hack that's not really a terrible price. 15 years ago I had to make that exact taxi journey, EK via Clarkston, every single weekend, and we are talking at least £20-£30 in a private hire 15 years ago. So with the last 15 years inflation, and the fact it was a hack, I would have assumed around £40-50. > Pretty shocking of a taxi driver to do this to two women What else is he supposed to do? Give you a discount because it's two women? At least he was upfront about it, some drivers would have driven off without mentioning a price, then sting you when you get home, or even worse, notify you of some extortionate price halfway to your destination (but conveniently near a cash machine), so you are already over what you intended to spend on a taxi and are in the middle of nowhere, and they tell you they will take you to the police station if you don't pay it. It's happened to my sister more than once, and me too before I became wise to it. The worst experience I ever had was having to get a taxi from Largs to Clarkston via Shawlands at 3am because my mate was ill. Paid £80 upfront, dropped my mate off in Shawlands, and the driver takes off towards Clarkston, then stops and tells me to get out too unless I have another £20. He was literally driving back past where I wanted to go anyway, I just hadn't got out on the way up because I was looking after my mate, but he demanded more money or he would phone the police and tell them I'm abusing him and refusing to pay. I just sat in the back of his taxi for 10 minutes calling him every name under the sun then left before the police came and walked for 2 hours to get home. by GandyOram (Tue 8th Mar 2022 12:56pm)
  • > I mean, the one thing it almost certainly is, is a terrible price. You seem to have missed out a major part of my statement, "for a hack". Personally I would never get a hack unless I really had to because of the ridiculous prices, they are beyond terrible. What I'm saying is that FOR A HACK, I'v seen worse. > The fact that may or may not fall in line with inflation highlights that's a terrible price now and it was a terrible price 15 years ago. I don't really get what your point is. That's what the prices were for taxis, so that's what we have to compare to. We would all like cheaper taxis sure, but I'm just comparing with the facts. I do think prices are worse now, because there aren't any better methods of transport at that time. The night buses used to run all week 15 years ago, then got cut to weekends only, and then to one bus a night instead of every hour. So taxi's are really now the only way to get about at that time. The 2 cheapest and most reliable private hire companies merged to form a far inferior service that bumps the price up when it gets busy, much like Uber. (On top of the rumour of drivers deliberately driving up fares by disconnecting in unison to drive up demand, then all simultaneously reconnecting and picking up the surged fares). So with so little alternative the hacks can effectively charge what they want. And that's before we consider the fact that there are much less drivers out there now after COVID, so demand is naturally higher. I did purposefully move closer to everything so I would never have to pay for a taxi or get a train again, so I clearly do agree it's too expensive, but if people are still paying it then the taxis are still gonna charge it aren't they? It's not too bad if you are in a group to split the fare, do people not shout out where they are going at the rank anymore to find fellow travellers? by GandyOram (Tue 8th Mar 2022 2:25pm)

  • Not really, 10p a spot basically. I've pretty much stopped it, it was just the novelty value entertaining me, getting me to walk down some streets less travelled for a few weeks. At each spot you get asked a trivia question, if you get it right within 5 seconds, you typically get 10p worth, either in Bitcoin or Ethereum. But there are different valued ones, outside every Boots chemist is one that gives out 50p if you get the question right. There are a few more things to it but that's the basic gist of it. So it's just pennies really, but if you have a route to work or something where you can hit up 10+ spots there and back it's not bad. • Even the same person; we get taught in school that our natural accents are lower class and undesirable, so people learn to code switch depending on who they are talking to; a seamless switch to a much more clearer, slower dialect when speaking to elders, authority figures, job interviews, etc. We just wouldn't typically get the formal voice out unless it was a formal setting. The whole thing stems from being told that we shouldn't speak Scots because it's not professional, not attractive, etc. But obviously we disagree, so we are reluctant to speak in anything other than in our natural voices unless we really have to. Another issue is that everyone here thinks they are perfectly understandable. It blew my mind the first time I went travelling and discovered that I actually barely speak any English, I really had to start thinking about each sentence to make sure I wasn't using Scottish words. Since then I do always try to speak a bit clearer when I know someone has trouble understanding, but it's so easy to forget to keep it up, and by the next sentence I'm back to full Glaswegian brogue without thinking. But on the other hand I've got mates who seem to get even more Glaswegian when talking to a non-native haha. I don't know if they think it's charming or what, but I find it amusing how incomprehensible they must be to some, and how oblivious they are to that. by GandyOram (Mon 2nd May 2022 5:32pm)
  • While there may be a bit of crab bucket mentality there, there are just as many people outside the bucket holding the lid shut. I moved from a "rough bit" to a "posh bit" when I was in primary school. Some of the parents of these "West End Wanker" accented kids didn't want their kids to play with me because I didn't pronounce my T's well enough for them and I wore trackies. I was kept out the top Maths and English classes at my new school, despite belonging in them, for general misbehaviour issues; no one thing in particular, just a convenient excuse for a bit of casual classism, preventing the slightly uncultured kid from achieving the same as the robotically well mannered kids. Obviously I had a few teething problems from moving from an environment where fighting was normal to an environment where everyone still played hide and seek, but I wasn't causing any trouble, I was overjoyed to be away from the fighting and aggression of the previous school; on my very last day there a guy in the year above me brought in a knife, attacked his teacher with it, then climbed on the school roof and we all got evacuated as the police, fire brigade, etc. all got called to fetch him down. So it was good to be away from all that but all of a sudden I was getting treated like I was the sort of kid who would bring in a knife into primary school; teachers took an instant dislike to me, if any of my new mates got into trouble then it must have been me who led them astray, and if anyone got hurt then it was my fault. If something got stolen, my pockets would be felt first, and the only reason for any of it was my accent. There was one day someones car was damaged round the corner from my mums new house, and the owner came to the door blaming me for it. Apparently they had seen me kick my football at it. I was one of the only kids on the street that liked football, and was often playing in the street by myself, so it was a believable plot, if it weren't for the fact that I'd been at my dads all weekend. Another neighbour came to the door accusing me of shining a laser pen in his window then calling him a paedo bastard when he came to the door, when I did nothing of the sort. I hadn't even been out. It was an actual witch hunt, all because I spoke different, and they thought my presence was somehow bringing their toxic wee community into disrepute. So just knowing what these snobs think (subconsciously in many cases) of normal people with normal accents, I've always been determined never to 'moderate' mine. I could understand if someone did so in order to rid themselves of a stigma in a situation like the one I was in. I'd think it a bit spineless personally but I could understand it (my sister went that way). To most people though, I reckon it would just seem like you now dislike your "old" accent, look down upon it and think you are now above people who speak like that (just like many people with "more proper" accents do). So that is why people have such harsh reactions to people purposefully changing their accents; it feels like you are putting them and their accent down. by GandyOram (Tue 3rd May 2022 12:02am)
  • > Did you ever find out if he was a paedo though? Still lives across the road from my mum haha, over 20 years on. > A little moderation is much easier than the conversation being 50% longer due to repetition or misunderstandings. Global society etc. Absolutely, and building bridges with people from around the world is a great reason for doing so. It was just the - doing it so that some people didn't think less of me - that I had an issue with. I'm more than happy to speak a lot more clearly for people who genuinely need me to do it to understand me, but that pretty much excludes everyone from Scotland. by GandyOram (Tue 3rd May 2022 3:50pm)
  • > The city is also filthy like every inch of it is litter ridden and is generally dirty and done in looking. Eh? Maybe 40 years ago, but plenty of Glasgow is very presentable now - much of the West End or Southside, for example. To be honest, even in our dirtiest bits of the city, we still don't really have that much litter at all when you compare it to some other places; [India](https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-asia-india-58866834), [China](https://allthatsinteresting.com/littering-in-china), [Ghana](https://www.dw.com/en/ghanas-dirty-capital/a-17772075), [The Philippines](https://www.macleans.ca/news/world/the-philippines-has-a-bigger-trash-problem-than-canada/) by GandyOram (Sun 15th May 2022 6:11am)
  • > every inch of it is litter ridden Would you agree with that? by GandyOram (Sun 15th May 2022 6:40am)
  • > compared to other cities I've been in yes Glasgow is very "litter-y" Maybe compared to other Scottish cites but then it is the biggest. Anytime I've been to the likes of Newcastle or Liverpool I've thought Glasgow seemed just a bit nicer in general. Although not massively to be fair, so maybe I was just biased. I did have friends visit from Newcastle a good few years back, and they were quite surprised at the apparent cleanliness of Glasgow compared to Newcastle. To compare to some European cities then yes it's definitely a bit litter-y, but these places do so much more than us to deal with it. In many places (Germany, Denmark, etc.) every bottle or can can be returned for money, so it incentives the poor or homeless to pick up every last empty they can find. Not only does that keep the streets much cleaner through the day, it means that there is less to do when the street sweepers come by, so they can do a much better job. I couldn't imagine us ever doing something like that, it would easily be twisted and sold as Glasgow incentivising homelessness and taking advantage of those less fortunate, and the council being lazy. > I'm fully aware the problem isn't as bad as the other countries you mentioned but I would say we have reasonable expectation to be better than them in terms of litter and street cleanliness Aye obviously we could be doing better, my point was just that it's not "filthy like every inch of it is litter ridden and is generally dirty and done in looking.", which is a description more fitting of these places I mentioned rather than Glasgow. It's night and day; these places are literally drowning in the worlds waste, while we just have a few empty crisps packets blowing about the street. I'm not saying that's alright but we can't say "every inch of it is litter ridden" when it clearly isn't. by GandyOram (Sun 15th May 2022 7:51am)
  • > I don't really get your point? We should just be grateful were not Manilla? I literally just spelled it out... "my point was just that it's not "filthy like every inch of it is litter ridden and is generally dirty and done in looking.", which is a description more fitting of these places I mentioned rather than Glasgow." So to further spell it out, I'm not saying we should be grateful about anything; I'm just disputing the lie that every inch of the place is filthy. That's my only point. > the "Toon" I thought you meant Newcastle by that aha took me a while. But I'm in town near enough every day, it's not our prettiest side but there are a whole range of factors affecting that; many people are still working from home, people have less disposable income, and the death of the high street in general. The city centre is going through a forced period of change, and there are limited resources with which to work. But it's no worse than the centres of the places I mentioned before, Newcastle or Liverpool. Sauchiehall Street did just see a major redevelopment that makes the top of the street a bit more pleasant. Getting onto abandoned buildings is really a whole other topic though, I was just talking about litter really. It is upsetting to see buildings like the [Lion Chambers](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lion_Chambers) sitting rotting away, but I don't know the ins and outs of that situation perfectly enough to criticise it too much; maybe the owner refuses to sell, maybe the repairs are far too expensive to be worth it. I can't help but give them the benefit of the doubt on such matters. > The city needs a better vision of it's future, otherwise its in for a long period of decline. In my 3 and a bit decades here the city has come an incredibly long way. The 80s and 90s it was a proper shithole. That growth has slowed, particularly in the centre, but other parts of the city are still flying. Finneston, Shawlands, Dennistoun, etc. all been majorly revamped in the last decade. Town might be fucked but that might be unavoidable for a while as it undergoes a period of unprecedented change as lifestyle habits evolve. And by fucked I just mean a bit untidy and not as busy. I just don't share the same pessimism for the future I guess. by GandyOram (Sun 15th May 2022 8:54am)
  • > But the city and country as a whole needs a look at itself and deciding where to go and what can be done to improve itself. At the end of the day its a very small handful of people who decide these things. > new spaces for uses the city needs. I think that's the whole issue though, we don't know what to do with these buildings and no businesses are currently interested in moving into them, or funding any developments. Just look at the big new buildings south of the river. Barclays clearly didn't fancy repurposing historic buildings in the city centre and opted to build a bunch of new ones in Tradeston instead. Good for Tradeston in a way, but it doesn't look great for the city centre. But I don't think bulldozing the place is a suitable solution. Much of it is still perfectly fine. > no decent links to the airport from city centre. Well there is the M8. Even if you don't drive there are buses from Queen St/Central and it's a cheap enough taxi. We might not have the best airport to city centre links on the planet but it's not that bad is it? Honestly I think most cities I've been (that are comparable in size to Glasgow) the airport links are a similar deal. Your bigger cities; London, New York, Berlin etc. typically have their multiple airports fully integrated with their trains and underground services, but I don't know if that's a realistic expectation for us, especially considering how much work would have to be done to achieve it. And they already destroyed Charing Cross to put the M8 in, literally flattened it right through the middle and put in the fastest type of road we can have, straight to the airport. It might not be perfect but it was a pretty major step to take to improve city links. What more could be done without further destroying the city? It serves as a painful lesson to why we shouldn't rush through major changes to the city like that. Maybe put in a train station after Paisley St James, but is that going to be faster than the bus on the motorway? The [website](https://www.glasgowairport.com/to-and-from/bus/) claims the bus takes 15 minutes, whereas a train from Paisley takes 20-25 minutes. Perhaps linking the airport to the already busy Paisley line isn't ideal either. > the roads and infrastructure is crumbling The last few months there have been some amount of late night road works going on around the outskirts of the city centre; Charing Cross, Anderston, Broomielaw, the M8, the M77; it's been annoying with them all happening at once but it shows something is being done to keep on top of these things. Could you name somewhere that the roads are notably better? Seems like everyone complains about their roads. > it's worse by the day, grass left uncut. Metal left to rust and rot, doors to service cupboards burst open and never fixed. It's wee things like that that start to cause decline but by bit. See I've not noticed much of that but I do agree things like that need to be kept on top of. Mondays are traditionally the night where hospitality staff go out, after all they just worked all weekend so everyone else could go out, so obviously things are open. > Monday/Tuesday days most folk are working Disregard this completely, Glasgow has 3 universities in the centre of it, and the students all need to do something on a Monday/Tuesday. Tuesdays have been a massive night for years with weekly nights at Buff Club, Subclub, etc. I have always preferred going out during the week, it's generally a friendlier crowd and the drinks are cheaper. But they completely forget that and only focus on their own English football. Which is understandable as they are based in London, I'd only focus on Scottish football if it was me, but it means we've had the short end of the straw for 30 years now. I've got a programme from the late 80s in which it is discussed how Rangers have far superior buying power to Man U. • > I only use Reddit here and there, unlike yourself Cool cunt aye? > Do you get a sense of empowerment being brave on the internet ? Being brave? That's me in a nutshell. Probably the hardest cunt on the internet. > Do you want me to respond quicker in future ? No I love waiting 9 days for a response to anything. Gives me time to think about how brave I am. > Fucking cupcake Bawbag dafty. by GandyOram (Sat 30th Jul 2022 1:27pm)
  • Still like clubbing in my 30's. Really don't care in the slightest what a bunch of teenagers I don't know might think about me when I'm out for a boogie. But then I only go out if there's good music on so I'm too engrossed in that to notice or worry about any other punters. I haven't ever felt out of place in my 30s anyway, but maybe that's just part of the charm of being 30+, you don't care what others think as much. The only time I've ever felt out of place was in SubClub in my mid twenties when it was just teenagers. Haven't ever returned there but I find the likes of La Cheetah and Berkley Suite fine, haven't felt old in them once. by GandyOram (Sun 31st Jul 2022 10:59am)

  • 6 days and that's your best patter again. A disgrace to Glasgow if you're from here. No doubt get slapped about on the reg. by GandyOram (Sat 6th Aug 2022 1:01pm)
  • Just let them roam free that's what I do. Only ever see a mouse once or twice a year but I just leave them to it. by GandyOram (Wed 17th Aug 2022 12:10pm)
  • Glasgow City Council sent out a £105 gift card last week to anyone in receipt of a council tax reduction. But of course it's not been a perfect rollout and every time I've tried to use it so far it's been declined - apparently not activated yet by the council. And there don't seem to be any online services telling me when it will be live, so I was hoping someone here might know something. by GandyOram (Tue 23rd Aug 2022 9:38am)
  • Aye aye I've done that. Well, it wasn't an NI number though it was some other number mailed out. But when I went to use it the staff were saying none of them are working yet. by GandyOram (Tue 23rd Aug 2022 9:47am)
  • Done all that and got declined at Sainsbury's yesterday, but fair enough good to know it should be working soon. by GandyOram (Tue 23rd Aug 2022 11:47am)
  • Hmm there isn't self service in my Sainsbury's and 2 different staff had a go at putting it through. But they were giving it the usual "the council have said we're accepting this, but we don't know anything about it, they haven't told us a thing". They also said to me that every card they had seen in there had been declined so far. Hence this post assuming that they hadn't started yet. Might just be that shop but I wouldn't have expected Sainsburys to have localised issues. It says on the balance check site that I've been activated since the 18th, so cheers for the heads up about the laminate it must be something to do with that then. by GandyOram (Tue 23rd Aug 2022 12:37pm)
  • Aye one shop. A Sainsburys where I was told that none of the cards were working yet by 2 member of staff. Why would I doubt them? by GandyOram (Tue 23rd Aug 2022 12:43pm)
  • How is helping those most in need a waste of taxpayers money? Not only does it provide a lifeline to those that need it, it benefits local business (as long as you don't spend it in a supermarket, but obviously supermarkets need to be included to help people with basics.) by GandyOram (Tue 23rd Aug 2022 5:18pm)
  • I'd say it's most like "stop it". You'd tell someone to fuck up if they were annoying you or doing something you didn't like. It doesn't really mean fuck off or fuck you at all. It's it's own phrase. by GandyOram (Fri 26th Aug 2022 10:48am)

  • That's kind of true but at the same time it's Glasgow, we don't all go about fake smiling at each other. by GandyOram (Sat 15th Oct 2022 11:06am)
  • When I was there they had a bunch of French volunteers setting up and taking down stages. by GandyOram (Wed 19th Oct 2022 1:26am)
  • Sounds like a John Bennett stunt if ever I heard one. Think that was his name anyway. He done the same to us (well we never put many posters up haha he was right to chase us up) and we were cuttin about tryin to dodge him, think he'd caught us once and told us we'd need to do some work; then later on we seen him stormin about the middle of the festival in just his boxers, out his fuckin bin, covered in mud, pure grinnin wi mud in his teeth n that haha looked like a mad gollum on a permo we were fuckin howlin. No chance were we doin any work for that dafty haha. by GandyOram (Wed 19th Oct 2022 1:50am)
  • Ahaha well it has been said that the commies go mad with power, whoever it is that gets it. Stalin, Mao, Bennett. Kiddin on haha, I don't mind the crusties at all but I know what you mean, pretty much anyone in charge at any crusty festival will likely be a bossy, moany wank. All the other crusties will be brand new though haha. Something off about Doune aswell, it's basically just some heavy rich cunts back garden haha, "aw this oan some toff's lawn", as my mate put it. by GandyOram (Wed 19th Oct 2022 2:28am)
  • > Tip culture isn't a thing here It very much is. It's not like the US where people are made to rely on tips, but it's normal to tip delivery drivers, taxi drivers, bar staff, etc. by GandyOram (Mon 24th Oct 2022 9:41am)
  • Ahaha are you the sort of person who refuses to ever tip then to make a point? If so then I think people like you are a problem. Workers get a minimum wage here it's nothing like the US, which is what people are worried about us emulating. You have just missed the point entirely though and are overreacting. I worked in hospitality for 10 years, my tips basically paid for my social life. And what a social life it was. Thanks for all the tips world. So if the bartender is friendly and someone tips them a pound or 2, how exactly is that a problem for you? My advice to you would be to be less selfish and stop worrying about what others have. by GandyOram (Mon 24th Oct 2022 10:27am)
  • Well, I would deliberately serve you last. by GandyOram (Mon 24th Oct 2022 10:38am)
  • Nothing wrong with chippy but never heard fish tea in my puff. by GandyOram (Tue 25th Oct 2022 4:59pm)
  • The fuck is a fish tea? Do you mean a fish supper? by GandyOram (Tue 25th Oct 2022 4:58pm)
  • Fuck catch, robbing bastards. It's about £14 for a fish supper these days. And don't go telling me it's £11, that's for a single fish supper; an [actual fish supper is £13.50.](https://catchfishandchips.co.uk/menus/WE-menu.pdf), and the fish isn't a patch on how it was a year or 2 back. by GandyOram (Tue 25th Oct 2022 5:03pm)
  • Had one last week and it was class. Just a bit hit and miss depending on the quality of fish they have in. by GandyOram (Tue 25th Oct 2022 5:00pm)
  • Ahhh fair enough, hard to even get proper chippy chips anywhere these days, everywhere thinks they have found some new, improved, healthier version. They weren't real chippy chips at Saltys but about as close an imitation as you can get. by GandyOram (Tue 25th Oct 2022 5:07pm)
  • Aye Catch used to be unreal when it first opened. I thought £9 for a fish supper was steep then by my god it was such delicious fish. by GandyOram (Tue 25th Oct 2022 5:10pm)
  • Aye but what's stopping you from shouting it then? How do you know the driver wouldn't appreciate it? by GandyOram (Wed 26th Oct 2022 1:13pm)
  • Thanking someone for doing something is performative haha? Isn't everything about London pretty performative? A show off city, full of show off people. Maybe it's not cool to say thanks. > Do you tap on the Subway drivers window to say thanks? I don't have to, I say thanks when they poke their head out the window to make sure no-one is standing in the way of the doors. by GandyOram (Wed 26th Oct 2022 1:22pm)
