  • I hate the lights near me, 9/10 times ill cross while its green because they take 2+ mins to change and the road is dead. You tend to find in more pedestrianized areas the lights are more people focused... unless its a bus lane, in which case its an instant change for them. by Lawdie123 (Mon 7th Jan 2019 10:40am)

  • You probably got a large bill because Feb and March are "free" months in the billing cycle (You pay more April - Jan) They will probably let you spread it over the "free months" if you ask. So the 800 will be a bill for Nov - Apr, if you live alone look at the single occupant discount of 25% by Lawdie123 (Sat 19th Jan 2019 11:49am)
  • >The AA says plans to charge drivers up to £1,000 a year to park at work could become a "poll tax on wheels". > >The charges would affect businesses with more than 10 parking spaces and the AA said the costs would be passed on to workers. > >Edinburgh and Glasgow councils have announced they plan to go ahead with the charge while Reading, Oxford, Bristol, Cambridge and the London boroughs of Merton, Brent and Camden are at the consultation stage. by Lawdie123 (Sat 19th Jan 2019 6:21pm)

  • Cheers all was a good night, trust me to have an 8am shift the day after :( As per normal I'm useless at getting peoples contact details, next meetup it is! Agreed it was super busy, however most reddit meetups on /r/glasgow normally have a ton of people say they are going and the number of people that turn up is massively smaller by Lawdie123 (Sat 26th Jan 2019 12:34am)

  • I would love some recycling bins, we have about 10 old silver metal ones (which overflow and fill the bin store) and 1 recycling bin. GCC in general just seems pretty bad when it comes to rubbish by Lawdie123 (Fri 5th Apr 2019 1:47pm)

  • Look on comparisons sites normally you are looking anywhere from 50 - 150 a year depending on coverage needed and if the area is a crime hotspot. You need contents insurance, not buildings by Lawdie123 (Tue 16th Apr 2019 3:02pm)
  • Will need to look at different types of birds. White eggs AKA what you see in the US are illegal within the EU because its caused by washing a protective layer off) You might find some duck eggs in the higher end supermarkets (waitrose,m&s etc) with a slight pink tinge to them but there arn't many other options by Lawdie123 (Sat 20th Apr 2019 3:43pm)

  • >Developers have wanted to demolish the seven-storey building, which formerly housed a church then the Indian restaurant, and create 20 flats in its place. >It’s been controversial, with residents complaining there isn’t enough parking in the area to cope with demand as it is. Well isn't that handy! by Lawdie123 (Wed 1st May 2019 4:23pm)

  • This is real I spotted one out today on Paisley Road West. They wear yellow high viz coasts with a small blue silver checks pattern on the arm. Camera on the helmet is fairly large (bigger then a go pro) by Lawdie123 (Thu 9th May 2019 9:32am)
  • It has music playing over the PA now. The mens clearance section is basically sports direct, the womens, and homewares (towels/bedding etc) seem to have survived by Lawdie123 (Tue 14th May 2019 3:35pm)
  • You are entering during the "hot season" for renting most places will go within a day or 2 of the first viewing. If you havn't already I would probably book a hotel or a B+B for a few nights to get property viewings in / contract signings done. I was looking around this time and found a place I liked, left it an hour to go look at something else and it had already gone. We have no minimum rental period up here so if you really hate the place / area its not too hard to move. by Lawdie123 (Tue 14th May 2019 6:42pm)

  • There are tons of Canadians in Glasgow so you might find other students from Toronto... We got first UK Tim Hortons if that's anything to base numbers on. The uni itself is pretty well known, highest rated in Scotland. by Lawdie123 (Thu 13th Jun 2019 12:35am)
  • Take outs average 10 - 15 for a basic meal, Most also have a minimum order for delivery. Council tax is anywhere from 90 to 150 for a normal cheapish flat. Utilities probably looking for 50 a month and more like 80 in the winter (Again very dependent on usage) I would personally chop at least 200 from the 500 for general bills. by Lawdie123 (Thu 13th Jun 2019 7:19pm)
  • If you are studying full time at university you don't pay council tax (If you live with other people who arn't students they might ask you to chip in towards it) by Lawdie123 (Fri 14th Jun 2019 12:15pm)
  • Good letting agents will take all the interested parties names and let the landlord decide. Most started cracking down after they had one person view it and the other stand outside the agency to put the deposit down the second the viewing finished. (I'm going to guess the people that did that were never good tenants hence why they had to start doing it) by Lawdie123 (Fri 14th Jun 2019 11:50pm)
  • You can order Ikea stuff online for delivery. You can also arrange it instore. by Lawdie123 (Sat 15th Jun 2019 12:35pm)
  • The junctions around the M8 / 77 / 74 is an absolute nightmare because people have to weave all over the place to get onto the right exits thus drive slower, There are also alot of entrances onto the motorway around there also. If you look at Junction 23 of the M8 you have around 1/4 mile to get from the slip road into the middle lanes before end up being forced onto to M74, aka driving slow to cross 3 lanes by Lawdie123 (Wed 19th Jun 2019 8:36pm)

  • If its in a place that is illegal you can email lesparking@glasgow.gov.uk , they wont actually take any action from photos you send but it adds the areas into the ticket wardens routes by Lawdie123 (Thu 4th Jul 2019 7:08pm)

  • Chances are they buzzed every flat in the block and someone let them in... happens more then you think. by Lawdie123 (Sat 27th Jul 2019 5:41pm)
  • If someone knocks at my door good chance I wont open it unless i'm expecting it so someone could still have let them in (My buzzer is switched off all the time also) If you have a "service" button you can ask the factor for the timings they act as a anyone can open button between set hours normally by Lawdie123 (Sat 27th Jul 2019 5:49pm)

  • Should be fine, if you was to do something a bit more sketchy like register on the electoral role, or move bank accounts to that address then you might get questions from the council then. by Lawdie123 (Sun 28th Jul 2019 12:32am)
  • If you are in a Hyperoptic area go with them, been rocket solid so far. BT, Sky, CrapCrap and every other provider that uses the landline all share the same infrastructure so are pretty similar, the main think you pay for normally is the customer service. Best place is going to be a comparison site. Just avoid CrapCrap. (If you are in a HO area let me know and I can give you a referral code for £25 off your bill) by Lawdie123 (Sun 28th Jul 2019 1:02pm)

  • Hopefully it turns up and hasn't completely ruined your holiday. When I lost a bear as a kid my grandparents found a similar one and wrote a letter saying it went on holiday hence the different color. Young me fell for it so you can try that if it's for a kid by Lawdie123 (Wed 14th Aug 2019 12:34pm)
  • I occasionally used the bus if I was feeling lazy, I'd much rather walk a bit extra and catch the subway instead. by Lawdie123 (Tue 20th Aug 2019 12:08am)
  • Going to quote UKPF - "Nobody has a crystal ball of knows enough to predict the changes an hour, day, month, or year ahead." With everything going on currently who the heck knows what is going to happen, brexit could crash the housing market for all we know. Property in the south is dropping in value currently also. by Lawdie123 (Tue 20th Aug 2019 11:16pm)

  • I guess it also depends on how long OP is already traveling to get into Stirling, if its an hour each way (buses to/from glasgow train station + train) it could easily turn into a 2 hour trip each day which would be a killer by Lawdie123 (Mon 2nd Sep 2019 12:36pm)

  • If you don't have a lot it might be worth scoping out if its worth just buying new once you are here. IE costs you 400 to ship everything or 450 to buy new, I would eat the cost just to not deal with the hassle. Books and such could easily be shipped in the mail (Whenever I move I cram all my expensive stuff with me and send a few boxes with other stuff in the mail), parcelmonkey.co.uk is a good place to get quotes for that. by Lawdie123 (Sat 28th Sep 2019 11:23am)

  • You can (and should change the lock - Don't go for the cheapest crap you can find on ebay, better locks tend to go for 50+ if its mortise or 100 if its a barrel ) if its a rental you might need to tell your landlord and give them a key dependent on the contract. CCTV is only useful once they are inside, since you can't have outside your front door in a communal area. by Lawdie123 (Thu 24th Oct 2019 10:49pm)
  • Guess that depends on how the flat is constructed, I'm on the top floor with a hatch, However there is a brick wall and no other way into the space so effectively I have all the as an un-official junk store. Do many flats have a shared hatch? by Lawdie123 (Fri 25th Oct 2019 7:29pm)

  • Yeah I just read it as "Its only a few extra quid for the upgraded one so just get that one instead". I got the student rate on it so I pay like £12.50 for single gym access which I think is perfectly fine by Lawdie123 (Tue 10th Dec 2019 10:01pm)

  • Rent can be increased once every 12 months and you have to be given 3 months notice. Chances are if its only a minor increase (inflation or lower) you would lose the case. The other option is to move out to a "cheaper" property, the issue is then do you save anything by moving after you include all the costs and hassle around it. by Lawdie123 (Wed 29th Jan 2020 1:10pm)
  • Issues are unrelated and no reason to withhold rent. The office would throw the case out if your argument against the rent increase was "I've had problems" . If there are problems in the property flag them to the landlord / letting agent and let them deal with it. Some are scum and will do the bare minimum to keep it legal which means most maintenance requests would end up in the bin. The only way out of those sort of situations is to move out. by Lawdie123 (Wed 29th Jan 2020 1:59pm)
  • Meetup.com is a good place to hunt for social events. You tend to find most of the groups on there are full of people who are new to the area. https://www.meetup.com/West-End-Boardgames/ is a good one however its only 1-2 times a month if you after a boardgame or two (not generic stuff like culedo or monopoly). If you / the group don't know the rules the event organizer makes sure everyone gets up and running. Vanguard centre has Archery if your after something a bit more active (You can turn up to any session and they will give you an intro as long as you prebook) by Lawdie123 (Mon 3rd Feb 2020 12:10am)

  • Obviously everyone should be checking with NHS inform regardless, I just put a cough and nothing else in on the website and got this: You should stay at home for 7 days from the day your symptoms started. You can return to work after 7 days if you're improving and you no longer have a temperature. You don't need to be completely symptom-free to return to work. by Lawdie123 (Tue 24th Mar 2020 11:34am)

  • > It's difficult to see how some people treat what you saw as your home and it can blur the lines of objectivity. Im guilty of this, however the first place I moved into the owner obviously cared about the place. Quality furnishings in return I gave a fuck. I'm in a building with Hyperoptic (upto 1gb up/down) and its been rock solid. Check on their site if the building you are moving to has them, I don't think they show up on the comparison sites. Never had an issue with GCC. A car that was dumped outside during lockdown was cleared up 1 week after the pound opened. • Fixed tariffs mean the price per unit doesn't change. You only ever pay for what you use. Most companies will give you an estimate and charge you monthly, the idea being you build up "credit" so in your winter months you have enough extra cash saved up. There is no such thing as "unlimited electric / gas". If you end up paying £80 a month and only use £60 a month when you move provider they will refund you what you didn't use (If you have more then £50 in credit you can normally ask for a refund instantly) You are not tied to any provider you can switch to whoever you like providing you are the ones that are paying the bills, use a price comparison site. by Lawdie123 (Mon 9th Nov 2020 1:39pm)
  • If you do direct debit you will always "overpay" in summer to be in credit however you would "underpay" in winter (Because you use it more). The overpay months then make the underpay months break even. You can ask for quarterly bills if you like however you get worse rates. If you had a direct debit for £80 a month and the peak of winter you used £60 then you can ask to get the amount lowered. (Most will automatically catch this and readjust). Interest is peanuts now anyway by Lawdie123 (Mon 9th Nov 2020 1:49pm)

  • > Unless there's a clause in your rental agreement, you do not need permission to change energy suppliers. That would be an unfair clause and would be thrown out. If you are responsible for the bills you are allowed to change the provider and get a smart meter installed. The landlord can however ask you to switch the provider back to the original provider when you move out, never seen them enforce that all the wanted was a copy of the closing statement so they knew it was paid off and who it was with. >Under consumer protection law, if you are a renting a property and are directly responsible for paying the gas and/or electricity bills, you have the right to choose your own energy supplier. Your landlord or letting agent should not unreasonably prevent this. by Lawdie123 (Tue 10th Nov 2020 12:51pm)
  • There are a few lights like that around the city. Its almost like the traffic lights reset every time a bus gets to them so if your on a side road, ie 2nd or 3rd on the light rotation you never go because a bus will rock up in the meantime and reset the cycle again. by Lawdie123 (Tue 10th Nov 2020 6:55pm)

  • Ive had a 3 sim for over a year that I never topped up (I had to do an initial top up) I think as long as you keep the sim alive its not normally a problem. If you plan on installing it then leaving it for 6 months offline then it will probably die, might get around it by popping it in a phone every month. Intercoms are a punchdown method same as network points they all trained to strip the wires then put them in the sockets by hand (which then fall out because they didn't use the tool correct which involves not stripping them). TL;DR look at the intercom wiring chances are its an easy fix with a pair of snips and a punchdown tool if the wires were stripped and hand installed. by Lawdie123 (Mon 10th Jan 2022 11:51pm)

Turn your buzzer off, you let them in so they keep doing it. Contact your building factor. Honestly sounds like anti social behaviour so should be brought up with the police, the police won't tell them who the snitch was. Guests in and out all day long isn't exactly normal and sounds like they could be dealing which would perk a few ears. Otherwise could you hire a car and have a friend sit in with you just to build up that last bit of experience. For the test you could also hire a car for and have a friend be in the car for the trip to / from the test centre, you don't need a driving instructor to turn up for a test. If its already paid and replacement dates are months away I would give it a bash regardless, if you need to book a second one its going to be just as far away. There isn't any competition in the market at the moment as companies don't want customers on the capped variable rates (they are making a loss even with the increases) and they don't want to pay comparison sites because its a big gamble if wholesale shoots up again. by Lawdie123 (Tue 5th Apr 2022 5:40pm)

The strike maybe over for now but the good will the council may have relied on won't be. by Lawdie123 (Tue 30th Aug 2022 11:42pm)

  • I ended up buying battery remote controlled bollard for mine. It's super convenient just being able to press a button for it to go up and down, need to change the batteries maybe once every 4 or so months but I would get lazy and never use a manual one. https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/203682348331 similar model obviously do a bit of research but I think they are all the same manufacturer with a different label. (I would put some high viz sticky tape on it so it's visible at night) by Lawdie123 (Sun 12th Mar 2023 5:42pm)
  • I guess it would come down to things like. How much is it going to cost and how many people are going to get compulsory purchase orders, there isn't really a lot of green space to build it and lots of the city is residential so you could end up forcing lots of people to move. (think how slow HS2 when due to comp purchases) I guess you could close the M8 from kingston and force everyone onto 74 then then 73 to get to the remaining part of the M8 / M80. You would probably need to keep some of the roads but not all the roads to be honest (including the bridge). If you moved the LEZ to the start of the Kingston bridge / m73 junction that could be a good place to start as it would force all the lorries away. by Lawdie123 (Tue 4th Apr 2023 7:38pm)
  • In the grand scheme of things it would still be cheaper then compulsory purchases and building new roads outside the city I imagine. Either way any action is going to cost a fortune by Lawdie123 (Tue 4th Apr 2023 9:22pm)

  • Are you full time students. If everyone living in the flat is a full time student then there is no council tax to pay. If flatmate is a student and your not then you can ask the council for a 25% single occupant discount since technically they shouldn't be paying it anyway. Council tax is one of the few bills you don't want to fuck around, you can technically land up in prison for non payment (albeit it doesn't happen often) by Lawdie123 (Mon 21st Aug 2023 6:05pm)
