  • Sounds like a high-fiving, wink-'n-a-gun service-industry Utopia! Anyone with bar experience will know just how fast the soul gets sucked out your arsehole doing 12-hour shifts, serving booze to hordes of total cretins for just north of minimum wage. Full disclosure: I'm a sour-faced cunt at the best of times, but barwork brings that to a new level in me. Some people can dissociate from the horror - and even thrive in that environment - but not me. The fact they dress the role up as 'Creative' reminds me of when I was 19 working nights in Sainsbury's. I was given the title 'Replenishment Assistant'. No prizes for guessing what that really entailed... by Pascals5foldacca (Tue 4th Jun 2019 10:42am)

  • 'Pickup' started as a way to teach men how to be more confident around women, learn methods to initiate sexual relationships, and to shed the behaviours which kept them from having these sexual relationships up to that point. There's a loose science to it. 'Women (in general, and according to collated data) prefer X; here's how to do x'. Is it open to abuse? Sure. Everything is. But let's not pretend it's inherently evil to learn skills related to sex just because some guy overstepped the mark. Language like 'creep' and 'power' and 'manipulation' is accurate of one guy - not the countless others who used the techniques they learned simply to improve their chances with women. by Pascals5foldacca (Mon 14th Oct 2019 8:49am)
  • It isn't manipulation: it's acknowledging both men and women have sexual strategies, and learning what those are. Do you just fall into bed without a say in the matter? Or do you discriminate based on looks, personality, job, prospects, feelings at the time etc. Sure you do. by Pascals5foldacca (Mon 14th Oct 2019 9:09am)
  • Learning common icebreakers or flirting techniques isn't 'coerced consent'; it's part and parcel of a courtship going back millennia. You are the product of that courtship. I offered a bit of balance to the OP by saying that learning skills to improve relationships with the opposite sex isn't bad *per se*, and you wind up calling me a creep who preys on women. Look, I realise it's trendy to bash men and label anybody you disagree with a 'creep', but it's not the best way to have a discussion with someone. by Pascals5foldacca (Mon 14th Oct 2019 11:11am)
  • No, I'm not on the spectrum. OP made claims about pickup in general, and the motives of everyone who learns a skill. This binary thinking is counterproductive, and demonstrably not true. by Pascals5foldacca (Mon 14th Oct 2019 1:04pm)
  • Except you've defined 'pickup' solely as 'coerced consent' and ignored everything else in my comments, before going straight to the name calling to shut down the discussion. It's the equivalent of sticking your fingers in your ears and saying 'la la la la'. Not once did I defend predation, or this Addy dick. I said you were wrong about pickup being 'all about power and feeling cool'. It might be for some, but for others it's a way of improving their chances of mating - you know, that biological impulse - and gaining confidence in general. The same way a woman might wear makeup, or false nails, or hair extensions, or pushup bras to attract a guy. Is she manipulating a guy when she does that? Or is she doing all that to improve her chances at securing mate? by Pascals5foldacca (Mon 14th Oct 2019 1:15pm)

  • I'm an Irish nationalist living in Glasgow. I might be guilty of special pleading, but I think Irish nationalism and Scottish nationalism differ from Engish nationalism in one key area - neither are predicated on superiority, but rather a demand for self-determination. At their core, both strains of nationalism would like England to govern its own affairs and only its own affairs, leaving us to do the same. Unsurprisingly, I voted for the SNP. I normally vote Sinn Fein, but they don't field candidates in Glasgow South (har har). Nobody voting for the SNP is ambivalent about its indy aspirations either, so it means there's clear appetite for independence, by extension. Which could point to an end game for the union. And the DUP and Cameron and eurosceptic tories and English nationalists will all have played a key role in its collapse. And that, my friends, is beautiful. by Pascals5foldacca (Fri 13th Dec 2019 5:31pm)

  • Some Rangers fans might not support the OO, but plenty do. It's intellectually dishonest to say they're 'infiltrators' and deny Rangers' place in the overall braid of unionist/loyalist/monarchist/protestant interests. You're attempting to shift the goalposts and redefine what a Rangers supporter is. AKA the 'No True Scotsman' fallacy in informal logic. Your analogy falls down as Celtic/'paedophile shielding' is an indivisible matter between club/supposed actions of club, unlike the seperation between Rangers an OO. Some might not want open investigations/care about what did/didn't go on in the past, but lots will. You've presented a false equivalence here, because you started with 'Rangers fans' without defining numbers, but defined 'all Celtic fans' in your analogy. Also, the readiness of some Rangers fans to bring up paedophilia is worrying. Given the glasshouses nature of historic abuse and the suggestions that similar carry-on took place in Ibrox. by Pascals5foldacca (Tue 16th Jun 2020 12:36pm)
  • You're 'agreeing to disagree' without refuting any counterpoints presented to you. ComicalAli states: 'Celtic FC did shield pedos'. You extrapolate a strawman from that along the lines of 'Celtic FC did shield pedos and Celtic fans support the protection of paedophiles which is a ridiculous position to take.' The 'position' isn't clear from a five-word sentence. No offence, but if you want to have a discussion about politics or football or child abuse, then don't use faulty logic and bow out when someone calls you on it. by Pascals5foldacca (Tue 16th Jun 2020 4:34pm)
  • No. Because 'embrace' as you use here is more akin to 'revere'. A better analogue would be Irish republicanism (if you're inclined to believe that's an issue) The fact is that swathes of Rangers supporters are members of the OO and sing songs about the OO. Mind that banned hymnbook and all the naughty songs? Do those folk just disappear along with the banned songs? Nah mate. Those kits the club punts every ten years or so. Just like the colour, aye? Pull the other one. Also, Rangers recently appointed an OO lodge master as director of communications. Is that a coincidence? Just the right man for the job? Except he has no experience in a similar role. Hmmnn. Look, Orangeism and Rangers are tangled up together. If you're claiming otherwise then you're wrong, and not worth debating. by Pascals5foldacca (Tue 16th Jun 2020 7:35pm)

  • That's a rough double-whammy alright. The gig economy and zero-hour outrage highlights the shaky nature of capitalism: disposable staff and an endless stream of substitutes willing to fill the vacuum for £7.50 an hour. Nirvana it ain't. • Mouse had a lucky escape, judging by OP's passive-aggressive responses to fairly obvious questions. Also, it isn't 'literally their fucking job'. There are places in Glasgow where bins are overflowing with rats that'd probably beat you in a square go, and it's difficult enough to get the council out for that. By comparison, you're diverting from those real issues when you phone about one wee mouse. It's like phoning the council when you hear a door being shut upstairs after 10pm. Jesus wept. by Pascals5foldacca (Wed 12th Aug 2020 11:21am)
  • >You don't think the city council's pest control service is for getting rid of vermin? You're being willfully obtuse. Of course I think the pest control service is for getting rid of vermin, as mentioned in the second paragraph of my OP. But there are finite resources and much bigger problems than your problem. Like someone who turns up to A&E with a scraped knee. Sure they can go, but it's a big eye-roll and a waste of time when you could just fix the problem yourself. >The pest control team are not currently working, so I'm diverting from fuck all tbh. Aye, but you didn't know that before you made the call. Moot point. >Far better to solve a problem at first notice than wait til my building is overrun, no? Catastrophizing and appealing to the worst case scenario. You saw one mouse; you bait and trap the solitary mouse; you evaluate if/when more mice appear. Seeing one mouse doesn't necessarily mean your building will be overrun with mice. In fact, it's highly unlikely. But you do you, OP. by Pascals5foldacca (Wed 12th Aug 2020 11:56am)
  • >I do believe that if my not knowing that the pest control team were not working makes a moot point, then in turn, your comment about me wasting time falls under the same heading The point about time-wasting isn't invalidated because you didn't waste the time on this occasion. You were prepared to waste their time, and are unlikely to change your perspective going forward. In that vein, you'd be surprised at how many people don't grasp the 'understood rules' concerning the NHS, which is why the NHS launched a campaign advising people about the appropriate use of its services. Because, people all over the UK clog GP-surgeries with unnecessary visits and phantom concerns. Anyway, we're unlikely to reach an agreement. So I'll bid you a good day, and say that I hope the mouse you caught was the only one kicking about your flat. Peace. by Pascals5foldacca (Wed 12th Aug 2020 12:31pm)

  • I suppose it goes to the wider question of pet ownership in the first place. So I don't think your position is necessarily daft. • Pretty sure car alarms come as standard, and burglar alarms alert the police, and the noise is just secondary(could be wrong). I agree though. • >The report noted a range of experiences, stating: “We recognise that ethnic minority students and staff experiences of racial harassment have changed and overt forms of racism are less prevalent in a university environment than more coded forms of racism like microaggressions and incivilities." This is instructive. 'Microaggressions' is disconcertingly vague. What constitutes a 'microaggression'? Is there even a consensus definition? How many of these campus cases involved 'microaggressions'? Calling someone a 'Paki Bastard' is different from 'Paki' is different from 'where you from, mate?', no? Why presume the latter example is coded racism? How do we distinguish, at any rate? Given that university campuses - which spawned most of this new lexicon - are among the most liberal places on earth, I suspect these results are burnished heavily by perceived slights rather than actual racism. by Pascals5foldacca (Thu 18th Feb 2021 10:07am)

  • I had a similar problem a couple of years ago. I contacted housing, who in turn contacted the neighbour. Rumbled on for quite a while before I got fed up. Knocked on his door one day and explained how loud he was being at silly o'clock in the morning; how laminate is super effective at conducting bottle dropping noise; that no cunt wants to hear him or his mates sing out the window at 3am throughout he summer. Wasn't rude, but was firm in asking him to wrap it. Sorted the issue. TLDR: Chat to them and explain how loud they're being. by Pascals5foldacca (Sat 6th Mar 2021 12:42pm)
  • I'd love a rescue, but I fall short on most homes' criteria. Like, live in a mansion with 50 acres of land, bordered on all sides with six-foot fences. Only a slight exaggeration, as we flat-dwellers fall way short of excessive rehoming demands. I appreciate the delicate nature of rehoming and the importance of due diligence, but I could give a dog a good life even without a six-foot fucking fence.
