  • Is this the guy that used to cut about Central all the time? Ive read about a ginger bearded guy that used to quietly cut about that area at all hours. Apparently he was pretty quiet and used to sleep rough but was happy to accept food and have some conversation with people. Bit of a local urban legend story or so I thought. Was reading this stuff on Facebook about a year ago. by Qush (Tue 8th Jan 2019 2:12am)
  • Thats a shame. Most of the comments are people talking about how he was a nice, quiet guy. Also a lot of conspiracy theorists saying he was a doctor/ lawyer/ accountant/ lost his wife and kids in a house fire which drove him mad. Seems like he was a well known figure back in the day. Here's a Herald article that has some information on him too: [https://www.heraldscotland.com/news/12674157.how-the-big-issue-is-helping-glasgows-homeless/](https://www.heraldscotland.com/news/12674157.how-the-big-issue-is-helping-glasgows-homeless/) by Qush (Tue 8th Jan 2019 2:36am)

This handy map will explain: https://www.lochlomond-trossachs.org/things-to-do/camping/go-wild/ If you want my advice, I'd recommend Lochwinnoch as it's easily accessible by train and there's some decent places to camp in the area. by Qush (Sun 17th Feb 2019 12:09am)

  • Strathclyde University library is good. I'm studying at Glasgow but use Strathclyde's as its got way more study space and is usually quieter. It's still open to students from other Unis: it's only Glasgow that close their doors. 24/7 until May 17th if you're a nighthawk by Qush (Tue 16th Apr 2019 9:43am)

  • I have degrees from Strathclyde and Glasgow. Overall, Strathclyde had a bit more of a down to earth feel about it if that makes sense. People stereotype Glasgow as the posher uni but I'd it deserves that reputation. Glasgow's library has longer opening hours, so if you're a nighthawk like me you might prefer that, but the library is always mobbed (especially at exam time) which means you need to get there early if you want a decent perch. I also think that despite being a very tall building, the Strathclyde Library is slightly bigger and it's a great facility in my opinion. Can get a decent seat at any time of day. However Glasgow are currently constructing a new 'learning hub' which should increase study spaces by around 5,000. With regards to your course choices, Glasgow tends to have a better reputation in the social science/arts field, however it will be tricky (not impossible though!) to get a job related to your area of study. Glasgow also has more of a traditional feel to it. It felt more like what I expected university to be like and generally has a bit more of a student community feeling to it. Both are modernising their campuses but as a social science student I have no idea how much benefit that will bring you in terms of new facilities etc. Strathclyde's is probably slightly easier to get to, particularly if you are commuting from outside the city. Both Unis are held in pretty high regard, but if you have any more questions feel free to fire away buddy. by Qush (Sat 22nd Jun 2019 8:58pm)

  • I've never lived there but done many food deliveries over the years. The place has a dodgy vibe in my opinion. Seen a few prostitutes standing outside the front door around a year ago. The common area inside the building is eerily quiet and fairly dilapidated considering people live there. Also, the close door didn't require to be buzzed to get in but you'd hope that's been repaired by now. by Qush (Sat 9th Nov 2019 11:13pm)

  • There has been a few (from what I've seen, less than 10) reported cases of 'reinfection'. However, the expert epidemiologists say its likely that rather than being reinfectes, its probably the case that they weren't tested properly when told that they no longer had it. The body is amazingly clever when it comes to viral infections, as is shown by vaccines. If you do get the symptoms, you will be extremely unlikely to catch it again (during this outbreak - this effect can wear off slightly over a long period of time) by Qush (Mon 30th Mar 2020 10:14am)
  • There's no way it could ever happen. The antgony between the two clubs is at the highest its been in a long time. At one point, the old firm players used to be pals - they'd hang about at the weekend, go to clubs and bars together etc. These squads hate each other, and it seems like the same sentiment is shared at boardroom level. by Qush (Wed 1st Apr 2020 10:13am)

  • Nah just need to update insurance to include courier/delivery services. I would never condone breaking the law but a lot of people just say that they're delivering in a bike to avoid that. If you do this, you're technically uninsured whilst working for uber eats and if you were have a crash, you'd be in hot water unless you're prepared to lie through your teeth so I'd advise against this. by Qush (Sat 4th Jul 2020 10:56am)
  • If you're studying law at Glasgow Uni, the Glasgow Uni Law Society run a second hand book sale at the start of every semester. Definitely worth checking out. Buying the books new is so expensive! I didn't buy a lot of them when I went to uni(would rent from the library/ work in the library without borrowing instead) but what with covid and the increased likelihood you'll be doing most studying from home, it's probably a requirement for the time being. by Qush (Fri 17th Jul 2020 9:23am)

  • Quite a nostalgia trip here. I remember going down The Barras with my family as a child, then later with my pals as a teenager. Absolutely teeming with patter merchants. You could get anything: football tops (3 for a tenner!), furniture, antiques, pirate copy dvds, tobacco, pet treats, socks, army gear, cds and much more. Danny's donuts were to die for: 6 for a pound and fresh out the fryer. I remember a kid approaching my dad asking if he was the real radio fugitive as apparently it was being hinted that he was at the Barras. My dad said aye and the kid went wild! Changed days now. Hardly a soul or stall open. I suppose that's inevitable with the rise of online shopping and the decimation of the high street. But I'll always remember the old Barras. What a place. by Qush (Wed 23rd Sep 2020 3:15pm)

  • I'm assuming OP means a make up artist. Whatever you think of that, it's definitely a job - plenty of people out there pay good cash to get done up for nights out etc. by Qush (Mon 5th Oct 2020 11:16pm)
  • Either way, you don't need to act like a prick about someone else's livelihood. by Qush (Mon 5th Oct 2020 11:43pm)
  • Not only is Glasgow no exception, but it has a bigger problem than most (hence the stricter rules up here e.g. Minimum unit pricing, 10pm curfew, no public consumption etc) by Qush (Sat 10th Oct 2020 9:01am)
  • With quite a lot of countryside buses you can ask the driver to stop and they'll pull in for you, just remember to ask in advance by Qush (Wed 14th Oct 2020 2:58pm)
  • That's an amazing idea tbh. Never thought of that. by Qush (Thu 15th Oct 2020 10:18pm)
  • Did it in the car on and off for 1.5 years. At one stage, the money was really good. They used to run promotions where, for example, if you did 8 deliveries in 3 hours you'd get £30 on top of your per delivery money. Would end up making like £60 in a few hours. Nowadays the money is rubbish. Best time to deliver is when a surge is on but I was struggling to make more than £8 an hour at peak times (lunch /dinner) after petrol. Lots of time spent sitting waiting outside Mcds Trongate. There's also next to no support from Uber so don't expect any contact with them. If you're absolutely desperate then sure, go for it. But it's definitely more of a filler job than a long term plan. by Qush (Thu 15th Oct 2020 11:35pm)
  • £4ish. It really does depend though. The further you travel from restaurant to customer the more money you make. Also each restaurant has its own 'pickup rate' which is like your guaranteed minimum. Think McDs Trongate's was £3.20 but some of the independent places have a higher one. Be wary though. Places are supposed prepare the food before you arrive so that you can just pickup and go as soon as you get there. In McDonald's, they don't start prepping the order until the driver arrives and shows you the code for the order on their phones. Means that time is wasted sitting about. Beware of Finnieston McDonald's. Time would go by faster if you were getting tortured by demons. by Qush (Fri 16th Oct 2020 8:41am)
  • 😥 by Qush (Fri 16th Oct 2020 11:51am)
  • That's correct. Different restaurants have different baselines that your wage starts on. And the further you travel, the greater the money rises. Not sure of the exact specifics by Qush (Fri 16th Oct 2020 6:03pm)
  • Not anymore. Drivers used to have a cancellation rate but I believe they've done away with that now. by Qush (Fri 16th Oct 2020 6:08pm)
  • Glad to hear they've sorted that out. Used to sit outside with junkies and neds surrounding the motor. Would always lock from the inside whilst waiting just in case. by Qush (Fri 16th Oct 2020 6:08pm)
  • The line is used for freight and also to move rolling stock so I can't see the Highline idea ever happening. Should definitely be opened for passenger use though. Quite a joke that if you're travelling north or south through Glasgow you need to change station at Central/Queen Street. by Qush (Fri 16th Oct 2020 6:56pm)

  • Went for it mate. Will see how the job looks when it all done. One jacket needed 2 new zips and 2 new patches, the other needed a couple seams. Managed to get it priced at £65 so I'd say that's reasonable. by Qush (Tue 20th Oct 2020 6:45pm)
  • Could hear my neighbour getting absolutely shagged rotten this morning. Went out to take the bins out and the sound reverberated all through the close. Crazy how inconsiderate some people are. Completely taking the piss. by Qush (Thu 22nd Oct 2020 1:40pm)

  • It would be better described as /r/SNP, rather than /r/Scotland. For a country that prides itself on its inclusivity and forward thinking, that sub is an embarrassment. If you don't have something good to say about the SNP you will be down voted to oblivion. Don't get me wrong, I even voted for them at the last election and would vote Yes given half the chance, but the sub is a circlejerk wank fest by Qush (Thu 12th Nov 2020 11:54am)

  • Rome Termini Station was one of the most brutal and sad sights I've seen in terms of beggars. Literally hundreds of them standing about, some of them using cardboard boxes with little eye holes as their makeshift tent. It felt very dangerous, but what a tragedy it is for these people. by Qush (Tue 24th Nov 2020 7:18pm)

  • In 2018 I did deliveries for Uber Eats and ended up in those flats a few times. Definitely avoid. The communal areas were falling apart and were eerily quiet. There were prostitutes standing outside the building, with a dodgy looking character sitting in a car watching them. I wouldn't rent there, and to be honest, I wouldn't live there for free either: never mind buying one of them. Sorry, but I'd avoid like the plague. by Qush (Thu 17th Dec 2020 11:59pm)

  • I'd just like to add that, in my opinion, some people are really over exaggerating how bad the weather is here. Granted I've lived here all my life. In Winter it gets dark quite early (4PM-ish) and there's a lot of rain and wind (particularly Dec-March). Despite this, it usually isn't that cold due to the Gulf Stream and it will **never** get as cold here as it does in Ottawa in Winter. May and June are generally *fairly* dry, sunny and hot. And Glasgow in the sunshine is unbeatable. It rains quite a lot year round (except May and June) but a lot of the time it's usually just light drizzle. It's all down to personal opinion but I definitely don't agree with the people who are making it out like the weather is catastrophically bad. by Qush (Mon 4th Jan 2021 10:11am)

At the very least, there should be some sort of tourist attraction/ homage to the city's industrial past. People's Palace is possibly the closest we have and it has to be said, its a fucking shitehole haha. by Qush (Fri 5th Feb 2021 5:54pm)

  • The fact that there's an election in a few weeks time. It wouldn't surprise me if they had always planned on making this 'early' change to the schedule to coincide with the run up to the election. The SNP have shown \[in my view, justified\] restraint to lifting lockdown restrictions, hence they've been balancing between political people pleasing and the science. For sushi, try **Okome or e-Sushi** (both Byres Rd) . If you fancy a gyros, I'd highly recommend **MacTasso's Gyros Van** (parks up on Kelvin Way). Can get good Chinese dumplings from **Dumpling Monkey** (Dumbarton Rd).. Heard decent things about **Bagel Mania** (Byres Road), but again I've never been. • If I could chime in with personal experience, I went to Jordanhill Secondary from S1-S5 then left to move to Hyndland. It's an awful place. Everything is results orientated and nothing else. They refuse to let pupils sit 5 highers unless they are sure that they will pass - this is calculated using a daft UCAS points metric. My maw had to go to the school and tell them in no uncertain terms that I'd be sitting 5 as I didn't have enough points. Passed them all. All they care about is keeping their high ranking. It's full of wankers - the majority of parents are wankers, who breed children that act like wankers, and are taught by (for the most part) wankers. A lot of bullying. If youre a child who finds it hard to fit in with the 'in crowd' there's a good chance you'll find life difficult. Luckily I got on OK but I saw people struggle. Had boys in my year sent home to get a hair cut, or to polish their shoes. I once received an 'in school suspension' and spent the day sweeping leaves with the jannies as my friends and the teachers laughed at me. Ridiculous. Finally, to round things off, I have been told by a friend that the school has the highest rate of suicides amongst former pupils - she does a lot of work with Brothers in Arms so I trust her insight. by Qush (Fri 27th Aug 2021 3:06pm)

Access to proper support, which stems from proper funding is a more proportionate measure. At the end of the day, if someone is addicted to alcohol, the only way they'll change is if they want to change - not if they're priced out. • I worked in Lidl as a student so altogether not too different. Getting stuck on 'first till' (i.e. You are the til that's always open) gets very boring, very very quickly. Working the shop floor is better - doing the restock etc. You also need to go about towards the end of your shift doing the 'rack down' (i.e. Tidying the shelves, chucking away empty boxes etc). A manager usually does the write offs too for out of date food. All-in-all, its a steady job. Pay is decent and you're not faced with unsociable hospitality hours. If you're on a close at a 10pm shop it would be very rare to be out later than 11. On the other hand, the amount of company rules you have to follow feels a bit over the top. I get that they have to make money somehow but getting moaned at because shoplifting is on the up, or because we haven't completed some random procedures. Edit: I should also add, a manager started at the same time as me and completely struggled with the demands. One day, he walked out of the shop half way through his shift and never came back. Personally, I thought he just didn't handle stress very well, but I have no idea what was expected of him. I think he was overwhelmed by the amount of stuff he had to learn and he was also on a 47.5h contract. Other managers all seemed to enjoy the work. by Qush (Tue 8th Mar 2022 8:20am)

  • I am also a lawyer. Commenter is right. There's no chance this happens - certainly not regularly or on a large scale. Lawyers must act in their client's best interests, but even before that they have a duty to the court. Prolonging cases, wasting judge, client and prosecution time would be a potentially disbarrable offence. by Qush (Wed 29th Jun 2022 4:45pm)
  • I've not seen anybody argue that you'd be better off with a duty solicitor over someone who you already know of. • First, I think this is a pretty random post to put on this subreddit. But anyway, the sport will only grow bigger if it gets more coverage. Its certainly growing - albeit I don't think it will ever be close to the men's game in terms of popularity or performances. Also, the UK is football daft (particularly Scotland and England). An international tournament win at the highest possible level for a team, regardless of gender, will always be major news here. Finally, believe me, if it was the England men's team, the coverage would be much, much bigger by Qush (Mon 1st Aug 2022 9:21pm)

  • Forcing people to vote ≠ democracy by Qush (Sat 19th Nov 2022 1:11am)
  • I'd had a few. Nonetheless, obligating people to vote isn't democratic. Only countries I see with "100% turnout" are authoritarian regimes e.g. China, Russian-occupied Ukraine. Democracy is just as much about having to right not to vote as it is to vote. For the record, I always vote. I wish political engagement was higher. But forcing people to vote or spoil their ballot is not the answer. But for all you think it's worth, spoiling your ballot has no ramifications other than personal satisfaction. Forcing people to vote or spoil their ballot wouldn't increase political engagement. If people aren't interested in politics, obligating them to vote doesn't change anything. People are forced to get an MOT on their car once a year. That doesn't mean they take an interest in cars. They're forced to pay taxes. That doesn't mean they're interested in tax law. They're obligated to follow a wide range of laws, regulations and rules in a huge range of circumstances. But again, that doesn't mean they care about their basis, why they exist or thinking critically about them. by Qush (Sat 19th Nov 2022 9:11am)

  • I attended both universities (psychology at Strathy, law at Glasgow). Strathy is better. Staff and students are more approachable. Library isn't impossible to get a sport after 10am (although Glasgow does have a new 'learning hub' which may have alleviated ay issues), Strathclyde offers loads of internships/partnerships which you can get involved in, gym is better.
