  • That's what I was thinking. I've not been able to find anything online about it though. There were fireworks, somebody playing the bagpipes, and a few drones flying about too. by feejsf (Sun 6th Dec 2020 12:43am)
  • Chicken achari from mother india. Spicy lime pickle sauce and its fucking incredible. Not had it since before the March lockdown and I'm seriously missing it! by feejsf (Tue 22nd Dec 2020 7:52pm)
  • Thanks for chipping in. I'll have another look at electric kits, then. Promising to read that your neighbours haven't gone postal yet. Yeah, I'm gradually preparing to discover just how shit I am at it now... Good luck with it! How come you stopped before? by feejsf (Wed 20th Jan 2021 12:46am)
  • It'll look great in my living room, too! In a perfect world this would be ideal, though. If this is your setup, I'm jealous. by feejsf (Wed 20th Jan 2021 12:39am)
  • Great, I'll take a look. Thanks! by feejsf (Wed 20th Jan 2021 8:00am)
  • Great photo! by feejsf (Thu 21st Jan 2021 12:26am)
  • Ha! Amazing. Best option yet (for spectators) Genuinely looks like good fun by feejsf (Thu 21st Jan 2021 12:19am)
  • Hadn't come across the silentstroke* and other quieter heads before, so thanks for pointing them out. Had a watch of the quiet cymbals on YouTube and they're are great! They look cool too, which is a bonus. I'd been thinking about buying an electric kit or using some studio space. Reckon it'll be the latter tbh, my girlfriend is sick of hearing me drumming on everything in the flat as it is. *pretty unfortunate name... by feejsf (Thu 21st Jan 2021 12:19am)
  • 99 times out of 100 it's an enthusiastic wanker. I hope OP isn't experiencing what I did when I lived downstairs from someone who had regular night terrors. I was jolted awake and almost shit the bed at least three times a week for six months because of that guy's blood-curdling 3 AM screaming sessions! Got used to it the more it happened because I started to understand what was going on, but calling the police did cross my mind the first few times. by feejsf (Sun 21st Feb 2021 11:44am)
  • Great! I'll take a look. by feejsf (Sat 7th Aug 2021 11:33am)
  • Yeah it seems that way. Thought I'd ask just in case. Such a shame! by feejsf (Sat 7th Aug 2021 11:43am)
  • Very true! But at least buying them locally I'd be supporting a Glasgow shop and could possibly start getting stuff today. It's also much more fun for me to go to a place and have a look at what they've got in. by feejsf (Sat 7th Aug 2021 11:50am)
  • No idea at the moment! Complete beginner and it'll help with my job if I know some basic electronics. I also enjoy this sort of stuff quite a lot, so the aim is to just faff for the time being and to see what comes of it. How about you? by feejsf (Sat 7th Aug 2021 12:00pm)
  • Cool! Any links to the art that comes out of it? by feejsf (Sat 7th Aug 2021 12:27pm)
  • No way! Thought they were online only. Thanks! by feejsf (Sat 7th Aug 2021 12:53pm)
  • I agree. There was a great one in my home town where I used to go as a kid. Unfortunately that's shut down now too. Have you been in the RS place in Glasgow? by feejsf (Sat 7th Aug 2021 1:00pm)
  • Wow, that's fantastic! Thanks for sending it by feejsf (Sat 7th Aug 2021 4:14pm)
  • Thanks for the advice! Can't beat the sound of a decent valve amp... by feejsf (Sat 7th Aug 2021 4:17pm)
  • Sounds like a good place! Saw it on Google a bit back. I'll take a look next weekend or something. by feejsf (Sat 7th Aug 2021 4:16pm)
  • Thanks! Not noticed it before. I'll take a look when I'm in the area next by feejsf (Sat 7th Aug 2021 4:15pm)
  • Awesome! Thanks for pointing them out. I hadn't heard of them before. This should help a lot 😀 Yeah, I've gradually been getting more into the whole 'make your own project' sort of thing, instead of going through pre-bundled sets like a jigsaw. I do that a lot with coding already, but looking forward to starting with electronic stuff too. by feejsf (Sat 7th Aug 2021 11:25pm)
  • Ta! by feejsf (Sat 7th Aug 2021 11:39pm)
  • Not yet... by feejsf (Sat 7th Aug 2021 11:38pm)
  • Too early to say for electronics stuff for me yet, but I've spent a long time learning python and c++ through YouTube, online resources like blogs, Wikipedia, and text books, but mostly through practise and trial and error. People at work are a great resource for me too, as a lot of them have experience with coding and electronics. I've never used paid online resources like skillshare or anything like that, so I can't recommend those yet, but may give them a go in the future. Stack exchange can also be an excellent resource of information or snarky comments from hypernerds, depending on your luck. I've never been to any of the hacker spaces in Glasgow, and not sure if they're still running. I like the idea though. The most important thing for me when learning new coding stuff is to have a project on the go that's pretty ambitious, interesting, and important to you. Coming up with those is the hard part, really. Most online programming tools just suggest things like a sudoku solver and, which never really grabbed my interest too much. by feejsf (Sat 7th Aug 2021 11:37pm)
  • Oh I see. Probably best to still order online then perhaps. by feejsf (Sun 8th Aug 2021 1:25am)
  • Thanks for the information. This is the first I'm hearing about this and I'm absolutely fuming! Museums and educational public spaces are incredibly important to a lot of people. It's fucking criminal that they're being shut down without a clear schedule for reopening. The Hunterian looks to be OK at the moment, so that's something (perhaps because it's run by Glasgow University). I absolutely love that museum; it genuinely played a huge part in my decision to move to Glasgow back in 2015. I'd be gutted if it closed. https://www.gla.ac.uk/hunterian/visit/openinghours/ Much smaller, but I think Fossil Grove in Victoria Park has also been closed indefinitely. I went past the other day to try get in but there's a sign on the notice board saying that it will remain closed until further notice. Sad I never got to go inside. by feejsf (Mon 25th Oct 2021 2:03am)
  • She sounds like a complete philistine. by feejsf (Mon 25th Oct 2021 8:45am)
  • Great!! Thanks a lot for this! by feejsf (Sun 31st Oct 2021 7:10pm)
  • The march went past my flat yesterday and except for one full bin you'd never know it happened at all. They didn't go anywhere near this bit of Union Street though, so this shitty mess definitely isn't because of them. by feejsf (Sun 7th Nov 2021 10:39am)
  • Hadn't realised the bit about not making up for rubbish missed due to strike action. Thanks for the info. by feejsf (Wed 24th Nov 2021 6:24pm)
  • Exactly the same with me. I've complained every day this week so far and will until the rubbish is gone. The whole yard at the back of the close is strewn with shite despite best efforts to keep it reasonable. Amazingly, they did empty our bins but didn't touch the piles of bin bags lying around them. They must have moved the bags out of the way, emptied the bins, then moved the bags back in front! What's the fucking point in that?! (I used to be cool. These days I just get angry about bins and whine on the Internet.) by feejsf (Wed 24th Nov 2021 6:21pm)
  • Reading other comments it looks like not collecting the bags is because of the strike rules the union have put in place. Fair enough then that the binmen haven't collected them. The fucking council should still be clearing them though... by feejsf (Wed 24th Nov 2021 6:25pm)
  • There were a few people handing them out when I was walking down Sauchiehall St. a couple of hours ago. They had a couple of vans which were being used as testing booths and it looked like they had a reasonable stock of the lateral flow tests. Not sure if they're still there, but might be worth a look. They were also there earlier in the week too (from memory, they set up around M&S or thereabouts). by feejsf (Fri 17th Dec 2021 2:02pm)
  • Not had the blue bins emptied since early November here. Had recycling messing up the flat for months and have complained to the council through the app god knows how many times but it's not been done. I'd totally run out of space for it all (fire hazard when cooking etc) so I've boxed it all up and taken it to the tip today, so it's all gone to landfill. Been fucked off about it because it's months of recycling, but there's nothing else to do AFAIK. Once the recycling is taken we'd have got back to square 1 with overflowing bins just from the stuff that's been hoarded in my flat alone. by feejsf (Sun 9th Jan 2022 12:06am)
  • Yes they were. My recycling would have gone in there otherwise. by feejsf (Sun 9th Jan 2022 4:32pm)
  • I don't have any further suggestions to offer, unfortunately. But if you don't mind, was your referral to the psychiatrist put through with the CMHT? Is this where the bottleneck seems to be for enormous waiting times? Best of luck finding the help that you need. I hope things work out for you from here. by feejsf (Tue 11th Jan 2022 6:22pm)
  • I lived in Anniesland for about 3 years. It was pretty decent then and can't see it having changed much in the 4 years since I moved. Not a lot going on there, but it's 10-20 mins to the centre by train. Just checked and my old 2 bed flat is advertised at the moment for between £700-800 pcm. by feejsf (Sat 22nd Jan 2022 7:50pm)
  • I'm currently playing the waiting game. I'm waiting for an appointment for assessment with the CMHT (Shawpark I think). Hopefully some of my rambling post will provide some insight of what it's like to be in the middle of it currently. My GP has been amazing. I first went there about four years ago about unstable moods while feeling very depressed and came away feeling fobbed off. However, called back last November about the same thing (while I was in a state better described as hypomanic) and after some open questions he could describe almost exactly what I had experienced, so he clearly had an idea about what was going on and took it seriously. I remembered afterwards that he had asked me how I had been doing a few times at other appointments in the years inbetween, and it dawned on me he was checking up on my mental health after that first appointment with him. The reason he didn't act at first is because he probably had some idea of what might be going on and the icd10 and dsm5 both specify that for some affective disorders symptoms must be present for at least 2 years before a diagnosis can be made. Sucks, but he was following procedure. He keeps great notes on patients and remembers important personal details. Overall, really good guy and an excellent doctor. I've had other doctors in Glasgow who are equally good too, but I didn't see them for mental health support. Anyway, he put me in contact with the PCMHT, and I referred myself to them and heard back about ten days later, which is within their 2 week turnaround time. They decided they couldn't assess my condition, so I was referred to the CMHT. That was around the beginning of December. Still waiting for an assessment, which I will definitely receive according to the people I have spoken to on the phone there, but I suppose this still counts as early days given waiting times to see a psychiatrist can be very long. Some delay is also due to the consultant psychiatrist being on annual leave which extended their Christmas break I think. The CMHT did not tell me that I was booked for an assessment. I found out that I'm due for assessment after chasing up details of my referral with the PCMHT, who then passed on contact details for the CMHT. I think so much can depend on the GP you find. Mine have been excellent in Glasgow so far, so there are decent doctors out there and a lot to choose from, so if you come across someone who doesn't give yiu the treatment you need then you should hopefully have a decent number of options. by feejsf (Wed 26th Jan 2022 9:27pm)
  • Hi! Thanks a lot! It's comforting that others have come across the dsm5 and icd10 controversies too! My doctor told me to read a lot about the condition he gave me a 'soft' diagnosis for (obviously steering me away from some websites, random googling, etc and encouraging me to be quite skeptical) and I have found a few decent articles in the journal of affective disorders about potential shortcomings of official MH guidelines. I've been finding it dead interesting! I'll check out your link shortly (currently doing the washing up...) I have heard of the chimp paradox so will take another look. Another I've had recommendations for is Happy by Derren Brown, but I haven't had chance to read this either (so can't say how relevant it is, but it's one that was pointed out to me while I was first figuring out what was going on). by feejsf (Wed 26th Jan 2022 10:26pm)
  • This is the best advice and they're not meant to say who called them, but sometimes they make it really fucking obvious who did. The flat below me is an Airbnb and I called the police while a guy in there was assaulting the woman he was with. Fucking horrible. I was told that the call to 999 would be anonymous by the operator, and the police turned up about a minute later. When the people in the Airbnb wouldn't answer the door though one of the officers came up to my flat, knocked on the door, and shouted that he'd like to ask us a few questions about the call to the police we'd just made... Not much anonymity after that! by feejsf (Sun 30th Jan 2022 9:38am)
  • I like Charles Tyrwhitt shirts and they often have good deals on. They last a long time and look decent, even after being worn in. This isn't specific to Glasgow, so sorry about that. They used to have a shop on Buchanan Street, but unfortunately it has closed. Their postal service is pretty good though, from my experience. by feejsf (Sun 27th Feb 2022 12:30am)
  • No problem. Im sure you know all this, but I had to learn how to care for wool the hard way... If you get the wool jumpers never wash them above 30 degrees (I usually just use a cold wash), get a wash bag for them (light net bag that stops them getting snarled up in other stuff) and use woolite and less of your normal detergent. Dry flat if possible on a clothes rack... Its a bit of a faff but it stops them from shrinking or warping, bobbling, and generally keeps them nicer. If you do that, then you'll hardly need to wash them anyway as wool tends to stay clean a lot longer. If those little moths are a problem then put the wool stuff in the freezer for 24 hours every 12 months or so, and store your wool stuff in plastic tubs. That'll kill the fuckers and stop them eating your duds. by feejsf (Sun 27th Feb 2022 9:40am)
  • Thank you! That's very kind. by feejsf (Mon 28th Feb 2022 12:34am)
  • Pet Expert Formula C+ powder and spray. When my girlfriend and I bought our flat we had a *total infestation* of these little fuckers. Every evening was spent killing them, searching for and splatting the grubs in the carpets, which had been eaten totally bare in places where the previous owner had put their furniture. In one place, there was a perfect circle of missing carpet where a waste paper basket had been when we were looking round the place before buying... The sticky pads do work, but they're not enough to keep a population at bay. Anyway, in the end what worked for us was the powder and spray. You put the powder down, leave for a day or so, then vacuum it up. After that, you spray carpets and anything else. We had to get rid of all the carpets, so we put the powder down under the underlay, between floorboards, etc. The spray went on top of the new carpets after they were fitted. If you have to replace carpets then buy moth-proof ones. They're made of a wool that has been treated so that the moth grubs don't get any nutrition from the fibres. Unfortunately they do still eat the carpets, but the nutritional value is so low that they can't sustain a large population. About four years on and we do still have moths, but we maybe see about 1 or 2 a week instead of the (literally) 40 - 50 we were killing a day when we first moved in. Most of the time they only eat animal fibres, so cotton clothes are pretty safe. Put them in the freezer for 48 hours and then store them in a container with a tight-fitting lid. Works wonders. by feejsf (Wed 11th May 2022 11:17am)
  • Good advice! The sprays (and powders) have worked for me in the past. There are some that are safe for pets too as long as they are kept out of the room for a day after treatment. by feejsf (Wed 11th May 2022 11:45am)
  • My cat and I are in the same boat. Arse wipers, unite! You are not alone. by feejsf (Sat 14th May 2022 10:20pm)

  • Saw this on argyle Street one morning. One seagull murdered the poor pigeon slowly, then three or four others swooped in and they tore it apart in a mad frenzy. All the other pigeons just carried on like nothing was happening while one of their dying buddies squawked for mercy. Didnt feel right the rest of the day after that! Seagulls are absolutely fucking brutal. by feejsf (Mon 20th Jun 2022 12:42am)
  • Just remembered it happened the other day! One shat directly into my sainsburys bag for life on my walk home. Totalled my lettuce! by feejsf (Mon 20th Jun 2022 12:46am)
  • I'd been shat on maybe once in 26 years. Moved to Glasgow about 6 years ago and I can now guarantee that I'll get an absolute cream cheesing from some bastard seagull about once every two months. I have a theory that they play chicken, taking it in turns to shit closer and closer to me without actually shitting on me. The seagull that eventually craps on me loses and then they start again. by feejsf (Mon 20th Jun 2022 12:45am)
  • That graph actually shows that you are wrong about most relationships starting online. Under 40% of relationships started online for all years up to and including 2020. Values for 2018 and 2019 are around 32% and 34%, respectively, so, extrapolating to 2022 by eye it'll end up around 46% of relationships starting online this year. A decent chunk, definitely, but not most. Looks like either 2023 or 2024 could be the tipping point. Maybe post this again next year! Also, what kind of relationships? OP said friends, but the graph could easily be about online dating instead... Not even sure it's relevant. by feejsf (Thu 23rd Jun 2022 5:02pm)
  • The place pictured in this article? [https://www.irishtimes.com/business/commercial-property/attracting-a-new-generation-to-the-dublin-docklands-1.1987639](https://www.irishtimes.com/business/commercial-property/attracting-a-new-generation-to-the-dublin-docklands-1.1987639) Not keen, myself. Neon LED strips everywhere like an Essex chav's citroen saxo. Edit: Looked at some other pictures and parts of it do look really nice... by feejsf (Fri 24th Jun 2022 10:45am)
  • I fucking hate those racist Pokemon. by feejsf (Sat 2nd Jul 2022 11:41am)
  • Sorry to read about your bad experiences with the medications. I hope that you are doing better now and your quality of life has improved. Rather than recommending that someone avoids the GP though, it's good to bear in mind that treatment can vary from one practice to another, so if you don't feel supported then it is a good idea to try at least one other place if possible. My GP has been *incredibly* supportive and has really hammered home the importance of assessment and psychotherapy before medications, which is something I was sceptical about before. Without his help I don't know what sort of state I'd be in. Edit: GPs are also there to help patients navigate and understand what's happening in the NHS system, too. Aside from treatments that my GP recommended and referred me for, this in itself was a great help when I found that the process of getting treatment through the NHS was taking its toll even when the actual treatment itself was helping. by feejsf (Fri 8th Jul 2022 12:31pm)
  • Sorry, not sure what you're getting at with this. by feejsf (Fri 8th Jul 2022 12:42pm)
  • I thought the same 😟 Greater emphasis on profit margins over quality is almost guaranteed with any big chain takeover I suppose by feejsf (Fri 15th Jul 2022 9:07pm)
  • Oh yeah, no doubt about that! by feejsf (Fri 15th Jul 2022 9:48pm)
  • Just what I was thinking. Infuriating, and very sad. by feejsf (Fri 15th Jul 2022 11:03pm)
  • Not sure. Another commenter here said the owners had been approached a few times and turned offers down in the past. If that's true, presumably this time the offer was enough to sway them. by feejsf (Fri 15th Jul 2022 11:06pm)
  • I hadn't yet ventured into the comments, so thanks for the heads up... Is the herald a pro-union paper in general? I live in Glasgow but not from Scotland so I'm not familiar with how local/Scottish newspapers lean. by feejsf (Fri 15th Jul 2022 11:05pm)

  • I've actually only been the once and had a great meal. I'm mostly disappointed by this because it's a local small business that's been bought out by some enormous company and will inevitably end up worse for that. by feejsf (Sat 16th Jul 2022 9:35am)
  • I hope so! by feejsf (Sat 16th Jul 2022 10:46am)
  • Just to chip in here with some numbers for waiting times on the off-chance it's helpful: A psychiatrist from the CMHT referred me for CBT and may waiting time was 3 months. Statistics of one here, I know, but around 80% of referrals for [psychological therapies are started within 4 and a half months](https://www.publichealthscotland.scot/publications/psychological-therapies-waiting-times/psychological-therapies-waiting-times-quarter-ending-march-2021/). CBT can be got on the NHS through self referral as well through your local primary care mental health team; you don't need to be referred by a clinician. by feejsf (Mon 1st Aug 2022 2:49am)

  • I'm sure that some money was made from it, but it would be good to know where in the Scottish/Glasgow economy that went. Money into private hands is not equivalent to money into public coffers, and it's this balance which needs to be considered, in my opinion. So far I've found plenty of articles on the economic benefits of this, but they're all lacking in detail and written in weasel words. I'm very happy to be wrong, so if you have a source saying that it's all been a good idea then I'd like to read it! by feejsf (Wed 3rd Aug 2022 10:47am)
  • Just ignore them; they were being pedantic and you made no mistake. by feejsf (Thu 25th Aug 2022 8:51pm)
  • What the other guy said is right. I've been with virgin for 3 of their contracts and after each one I've been landed with massive monthly bill hikes. Each time this happens I get a new contract with BT or something (any other supplier that allows cancellations/a 'cooling off' period), wait for Virgin to call back (or call them up to cancel my account), and generally end up with a new contract with Virgin and a big discount. To be fair though, this is what I've had to do with every supplier I've been with. by feejsf (Fri 16th Sep 2022 1:36pm)
  • I had a mouse infestation in my place when I first moved in. In my experience, the commercial humane traps are all rubbish. I had the most luck making my own out of a ramp, a ruler, some peanut butter, and a tall bucket. The ramp can be anything as long as the mouse can climb it (I used a small pile of old clothes). Put some peanut butter on the end of the ruler and balance it on the lip of the bucket and the ramp, with the peanut butter end hanging over the middle of the bucket. The mouse has to 'walk the plank' to get the peanut butter, and falls in the bucket. If the bucket is tall enough, the mouse can't jump out again. It takes a few attempts to get the ruler balanced correctly (I found a few mice had figured out how to get the peanut butter without falling in), but I had more success with this than any other trap. Bear in mind that the mice will always find a way in now that they're established in your flat. As well as catching them, it's a good idea to go looking for places where they get in and filling up any gaps with wire wool (and then going over that with some polyfilla). That's kept them out of my place for at least 4 years now*. Good luck! *this might also be because I now have a cat, but I'm reluctant to give that fucker any credit. by feejsf (Fri 11th Nov 2022 9:23am)
  • Lakeland, that's the one. Expensive and a bit shit when I've looked. by feejsf (Wed 21st Dec 2022 4:44pm)
  • Anywhere that does half decent kitchenware should have them. The first place I would look would be John Lewis. There's another kitchen shop in Buchanan Galleries too, but can't quite remember the name of it now (I think it's also a bit steep and not as good quality). by feejsf (Wed 21st Dec 2022 4:43pm)
  • Boots, superdrug, some pharmacies might, and if times get really tough, then try looking for dispensers in pub toilets 🤷‍♂️ If you're after something more long term, the Je Joue bullet is dynamite. by feejsf (Wed 21st Dec 2022 9:11pm)

  • What's with all the downvotes for OP? People a bit tetchy this morning? by feejsf (Sun 12th Mar 2023 9:09am)
  • Yeah, i understand your point, but when I commented earlier I wondered if op has seen the mattresses on gumtree but found they aren't appropriate for a reason they don't see the need in justifying to people on here. Also, they've come here to ask in case someone has something that isnt on gumtree, so posting links they say they've looked at already isn't too helpful. Depending on the type, plastic mattresses range from just about OK to absolutely horrible. They're uncomfortable, noisy, and extremely sweaty. I'd choose back pain over having one of those again. Just seems curmudgeonly for people to assume the worst here, that's all. by feejsf (Sun 12th Mar 2023 10:47am)
  • They're not asking for cash, they're asking if anyone has a mattress they're chucking out. (or at least their post isn't asking for cash. Not read their other comments tbf). by feejsf (Sun 12th Mar 2023 11:36am)
  • Fair enough. I've not been keeping up with the post and hadn't read what's been commented in the past couple of hours. When I commented originally there were only about 5 others, 3 of them from OP and all hammered with downvotes, which is why I asked. by feejsf (Sun 12th Mar 2023 11:43am)

  • No, this seems like a decent solution for minimising damage to the door while you're waiting for repairs. It would need to be done up really tightly, which might also do some damage, but still way better than making holes in the door itself. Regarding mice, get the council on it. They have an emergency pest control number and they come out putting poison around. You can also make your own traps using a deep bucket, a ruler, and peanut butter. Make a ramp up to the height of the bucket (I used old clothes), and balance the ruler over the centre of the bucket with one end on the ramp. Put the peanut butter on the end as bait, and the mice will 'walk the plank' and get trapped in the bucket underneath. It takes some practice to get the balance of the ruler right so the mice fall in, but when ive had mice this has worked way better than any commercial trap (but doesn't kill the mice). Good luck! by feejsf (Tue 16th May 2023 1:11pm)

  • Has mandors become ridiculously expensive lately, or is it just me? £30 odd quid for some of the sewing patterns and £18/m for standard lining fabric when I went in the other week. by feejsf (Wed 14th Jun 2023 1:08am)

  • I second the suggestions about going to the GP. Look into doing that *tomorrow and as soon as they open*. The longer you are feeling like this, the harder it can be to get out of it (trust me). Your GP is very likely to suggest that you refer yourself to your local PCMHT for cognitive behavioural therapy, and if they don't then this should be something to ask for because it's the first step to receiving treatment for depression on the NHS. I've had CBT for a number of things (insomnia, depression, and lack of self worth/esteem) and while I didn't find it to be the panacea others make it out to be, it can certainly help. I'm bringing this up because your first sentence in this last comment about the walking club is a great example of how you can start working towards feeling better: you said "... i really struggle to talk to people in person at this point", which is an example of negative self belief, is a self-fulfilling prophecy, and is very unlikely to actually be realistic on balance. A way of reframing your thought process here into something that might be a bit more helpful could be "I might struggle to talk to people in a walking club." This reframing incorporates your current concerns while also acknowledging a few other things for balance. It: Allows for the possibility that the opposite could be true. Allows for an explanation that doesn't cast you as the failure point. Perhaps you just have nothing in common with the walkers in that club? Allows you to acknowledge that this experience, whether it works out or not, will be specific to this one attempt to meet people, and does not represent a global truth ("...in a walking club", i.e., not absolute/true for everyone you meet). by feejsf (Sun 18th Jun 2023 3:58pm)

  • Seconded. Buzzcut worked wonders for my self confidence, which was crap already but exacerbated by balding at 22. Shaved my head and face with a 3mm guard once a week for 12 years now and I wished I'd started sooner. Couldn't be easier, suits me well, and looks good. Imo, it's the only truly flattering option for balding guys because it's the only thing that looks deliberate. by feejsf (Tue 4th Jul 2023 11:06pm)
  • I've had the same problem. It's fucking infuriating. Second hand shops are good if you've got time and patience, like others have said. Same with tkmaxx. If you find something you really like then don't be scared to take something to a tailor if it's just a bit on the big side, either. Ive had some luck with John Lewis for shirts and chinos (although only recommend the pure cotton relaxed fit, nothing with elastane). I've got a few pairs of 501s on the go, and when they wear out I'll replace them with one expensive set from a UK supplier like Hebtroco or hawksmill. I'm also sick of seeing myself in jeans, so I'm currently shopping for one or two pairs of wool trousers, casual jackets, cardigans, etc. Walker slater in town is good for some of this sort of thing, or there's cordings for knitwear, and in autumn/winter John Lewis tend to have wool flannel trousers too. Ignore the cordings and waller slater marketing - they're both going for the country gent shtick, but you can pair a lot of their stuff with *normal* clothes and you'll look good. Both are expensive, but you get what you pay for with these items. For shoes, I avoid trainers because they're expensive and never last. I save up for shoes and buy a new pair or two every 5 years or more. There's no secret here, just get good quality leather, Goodyear welted, and look after them. I don't recommend Dr martens because the quality is shite (same goes for basically every named brand, tbh). Grenson are good, and I've saved up in the past for Trickers from their outlet store. Obviously recommendations are only any good if they match the style you're after, but I've started to spend more on fewer items that are much better quality than I used to buy, and this seems like a good tactic if you're able to increase your spend a bit more too. E.g., if two shirts are ready for the bin, I'll just replace them with the one at twice the price if the quality is also better. I'm justifying this in part because clothes haven't actually got much more expensive despite inflation, they're just more shit and the quality control is worse so they're now cheaper to make. by feejsf (Thu 3rd Aug 2023 9:48pm)

  • I like walker slater (not part of slaters). Seen a few bigger guys in their suits who look good, and they have a few different cuts to try. They also do some alterations and have a proper made-to-measure service. by feejsf (Thu 23rd Nov 2023 7:19pm)
