  • I wouldn’t be too upset with the son. Huntington’s is a hereditary disease that usually gets worse in each generation. He may not be ready to deal with the fact that with a 50% chance he’s looking at his own fate. That’s difficult at any age, but really hard in your early twenties when you’re just about to start your life. Maybe he’s been tested and already knows whether he’ll get the disease or not, but chances are he hasn’t come this far yet. The disease will affect your neighbour’s cognition and at some point she will no longer be able to make her own decisions. I don’t know what the procedure is when people lose the mental capacity to make their own decisions and care for themselves, but I suspect the Huntington’s charities mentioned above will be able to help. by rudishort (Thu 7th Apr 2022 8:58pm)
  • Given what you say it sounds like a really high stress situation. I think the best way forward is to involve the charities and maybe the sister more. I suspect her sister will have seen this happen to one of her parents (if they share the same parents) and there is also the chance she is affected. Either way, she may know what’s coming and may be more acutely aware of what will be needed soon. From what you’ve said, I suspect her son is having a very hard time dealing with the diagnosis and potentially his own outlook. It sounds like his coping mechanism is to try to ignore it, which probably means he hasn’t been tested himself and constantly lives with the uncertainty of being a carrier. The outbursts of anger are probably a mere symptom of his own helplessness / anxiety. I think that’s at least a likely scenario. The best way forward will be the charities. They’ll have experience in these matters and will hopefully be able to help her and her son. Also, I suspect she receives regular care from NHS neurologists specialising in the disease, who may be able to organise more help if her problems are being flagged up to them - maybe by her sister. It’d have to be a relative, I’m sure they wouldn’t talk to you. by rudishort (Fri 8th Apr 2022 1:16pm)

  • Under two years of age the staff - child ratio needs to be 1:1 by law. I think that explains part of the cost. by rudishort (Wed 4th May 2022 6:23am)
  • Is it contained to his flat or is it also in communal areas? Ultimately he will need to look at the deeds and see what’s stipulated in there. It’ll clearly state which parts of the responsibility lies with whom. Generally, if it affects the entire building and it’s not just restricted to his flat, it would usually be a shared responsibility among all owners (although parts pertaining to just his flat may likely be only his responsibility still). He’ll need to get the ok from all owners to fix it and share costs (he can find the owners through the land registry website - it only costs a few quid per flat). They may not respond / agree, but I think at least theoretically it’s enforceable through courts, especially if responsibility is clearly stipulated in the deeds, but I’m no lawyer and if owners refuse to pay (or likely don’t respond to his request) he may have to hire a lawyer to get advice on how to proceed. by rudishort (Mon 23rd May 2022 9:16am)
  • Yeah. He likely won’t get all of them to respond. It’s not even the residents, it’s the owners, who may live nowhere near (I assume at least some of the flats will be rented). That’s were the lawyer would have to come in as last resort. by rudishort (Mon 23rd May 2022 9:29am)

  • No. Nothing is installed yet. by rudishort (Wed 27th Jul 2022 11:14am)
  • That’s right. SGN will install the meter, but I need someone to run from the meter into the property. I didn’t think the energy company would do that, but I can give it a try. by rudishort (Wed 27th Jul 2022 11:13am)
  • Thanks. Do you have a specific company in mind? I've had multiple ones out and none of them got back to me with a quote. I assume because it's not your standard job. by rudishort (Wed 27th Jul 2022 12:07pm)

  • Thanks for this. The flat is in a converted Victorian School house. Ceilings are higher than five metres. by rudishort (Wed 27th Jul 2022 3:56pm)
  • Thanks for your reply. I guess that's the problem. They can't do the external work. It is this high unfortunately. The building is an old Victorian school house with ceiling heights in excess of 5m. As far as I know, internal gas pipes are no longer allowed. That's at least what the plumbers and SGN told me. Cheers, and thanks again. by rudishort (Wed 27th Jul 2022 4:35pm)
  • It’ll likely be your water heater. Those immersion heaters suck a ton of energy. I have one as well and use about 600kWh a month for a two bed flat. by rudishort (Mon 1st Aug 2022 10:00am)
  • There's a new licensing scheme being discussed that will likely come into force over the next couple of years. This said, I have also heard that AirBNBs in shared closes are no longer permissible, but only acted upon when reported. I've found this online: "Current planning policy in Glasgow indicates that flats used for short stay accommodation must have planning permission and licensing applications must be accompanied by proof that planning consent is in place. Planning permission is not required for home sharing, secondary letting for a house and home letting for a house." Maybe talk to planning? They've been pretty responsive to me on their online form (reply within a day). If they can't help, they'll surely signpost you to the right department. Even though that council has a bad rep, I've actually only had good interactions with them. Just ask them. by rudishort (Mon 1st Aug 2022 11:12am)
  • This. I make six figures and still budget / think about money all the time even though I’m living way below my means. by rudishort (Tue 23rd Aug 2022 8:30am)
  • I agree. All I’m saying is that, speaking for myself, I never stop thinking about money / budget. It’s not in my nature to do so. I know I’m privileged and don’t have to worry about how to pay for food / energy etc and yet, I’m frantically upgrading my energy infrastructure at the moment to reduce consumption asap, because I just can’t get myself to pay £700/month for energy, even though I could. by rudishort (Tue 23rd Aug 2022 10:20am)
  • Probably something that’s not possible for everyone (luckily). My house is not connected to gas (yet), so I have a wet electric heating system. Stupidly expensive with the current (and future) electricity prices. So I’m trying to get the house connected to gas and a gas boiler installed, which is trickier than it sounds, as I live in a listed building. Just also had Thermostatic radiator valves fitted on all my radiators and am getting my windows fixed (but that’s not happening until March - the guy is too busy at the moment). I also have a hot water tank, for which the temp was set way too high. Reduced that to 60C, which alone should shave a significant amount off my monthly bill come October. Turns out 30% of my annual energy usage goes towards keeping the water in the hot water tank hot. I was shocked that it’s that much. Those costs will drop significantly once I have a combi boiler installed as I’ll only heat the water I use and don’t keep 180L at a constant 70 (now 60) degrees. by rudishort (Tue 23rd Aug 2022 2:50pm)
  • Daily Express? Really? by rudishort (Thu 1st Sep 2022 9:55am)
  • Call up Sixt Glasgow and ask, but I’m pretty sure that they’d get an EV to site if you reserve one in advance. I’d also make sure charging infrastructure is in place where you want to go. Not sure if what it’s like up north. by rudishort (Sat 3rd Sep 2022 2:01pm)
  • You need to cycle on the roads / bike lanes. Not footpaths. by rudishort (Wed 7th Sep 2022 9:47am)
  • But in that case it’s a clearly indicated cycle path on the footpath, which again is a cycle path. If that’s not there then you have to be on the road. by rudishort (Wed 7th Sep 2022 5:01pm)
  • But see. That’s the problem. If everyone picks and chooses the traffic laws they want to adhere to, no one is safe. There’s no reason for bikes not to use the road. As long as your bike is properly kitted out (lights!) and you’re wearing something hi-vis, riding on the road is perfectly safe. You can’t go over Kingston bridge, but you’re not supposed to. All other roads are totally fine. It’s just down to personal anxiety, but that’s not a reason to break traffic laws. I never felt unsafe biking in Glasgow, but I stick to the rules. We expect cars to stick to the rules (and get rightfully upset if they don’t) and we need to do the same. That includes stopping at red lights by the way. Otherwise it’s just chaos. by rudishort (Thu 8th Sep 2022 3:51pm)
  • Definitely look further out and commute. I think Airbnb has a big pet to play in the current crisis. I’m my block of flats 20% are AirBnB. Some bought recently by Londoners for the sole purpose to let via AirBnB. Given the number of key locks I see, I think this is probably typical for city centre / west end at least. These flats are missing from the regular housing market. by rudishort (Thu 22nd Sep 2022 4:05am)
  • That’s what I thought. But it’s currently at least not enforced by the council unless it’s reported. They don’t go looking and I don’t think people are snitching (I’m not). by rudishort (Thu 22nd Sep 2022 8:33am)
  • I regularly see this in the city centre. Lanes, parks etc. I think its homeless, but yes, very unpleasant. by rudishort (Mon 17th Oct 2022 10:02pm)

  • Welcome to the new Britain. We’ve been getting poorer and poorer since the financial crisis and eventually it’ll show in living standards for everyone. This country has been in (poorly) managed decline since 2008 and I don’t see it get better anytime soon. Given your age you may want to consider emigrating. by rudishort (Sun 11th Dec 2022 12:40pm)
  • The Uk is doing the worst by many measures of all developed nation. Over reliance on financial services, Brexit and a huge disparity in economic power across the country London is the only place in all the UK up to international Western developed standard. The rest of the country is just simply poor and has been getting poorer since 2008. We now see it really hit home and notice the difference in our own living standards and in public services. This country is circling the drain and by 2030 will have been surpassed by Poland on a GDP/capita basis. We need some radical change, which no one is willing to advocate and implement. by rudishort (Sun 11th Dec 2022 12:45pm)
  • You sound very idealistic. How do you plan on doing that? The system in this country is sclerotic and the format of our democracy is still medieval. by rudishort (Sun 11th Dec 2022 2:55pm)
  • At least for his $200 he could be sure that an ambulance would be coming within 15 minutes and not after four hours if you’re lucky. I’d happily pay $200 to make sure of that. Also, our monthly NI contribution is quite substantial, especially if you consider employee and employer contribution. by rudishort (Sun 11th Dec 2022 10:49pm)
  • Isn’t NI contribution 15% or so up to 50k annual salary plus the employer contribution? If you’re on that salary range it’s quite spendy and the service you get is mediocre. by rudishort (Sun 11th Dec 2022 11:35pm)
  • This is not only about Glasgow. The whole country is in the shitter (and by country I mean “UK”). And sure, if everything was better things would be better. But aside from some good sounding phrases you haven’t mentioned a single actionable thing on how to get there. And just fyi: I’m no victim in this. Not at all - I’m really, really comfortable. I wouldn’t be surprised if I was in the top 1% of (salaried) earners in Glasgow. I’m rich by most standards (not just Uk standards) and have the freedom to move to another country if I want / need to. I’ve mad Glasgow my home, but I’m not from the UK originally and have lived in four countries before I came here and while I personally don’t need change, I’m just really frustrated by what I see, by how sclerotic, how unorganised and how unable to change this country is. The twenty something year olds all have ideals, spout them loud, glue themselves to motorways, but when it comes down to actually vote and make a difference, they can’t be arsed. So yet again, we have the same outcome every five years, and nothing changes, because the people that really could make a difference don’t bother to vote. There won’t be a revolution if that’s what you’re looking for. You need a change from within the system and that means be active politically and vote! No one seems to bother though. by rudishort (Mon 12th Dec 2022 11:47pm)
  • Well. You’d have to push it to get it there. by rudishort (Wed 14th Dec 2022 8:03am)

  • Is the market really still this hot or has it started to cool down? I’d be really surprised if it wouldn’t swing in buyers’ favour this year. I plan on buying, but will wait until the doom and gloom has hit the sellers. Some time towards the end of the year I reckon and then I firmly plan to over below home report. by rudishort (Mon 23rd Jan 2023 7:36am)
  • Vote for independence and hope things get better or leave the country. I’m seriously considering the second option at the moment. Especially given how politics are developing in the UK. We’re poor and seem to be run by racist pricks. May wait to se where the next GE takes us, but leaving the country gets more and more appealing. by rudishort (Wed 8th Mar 2023 6:44pm)

  • Hard to say without really knowing your budget, but if you’re into hikes, you’re not far from many excellent hikes in the highlands. You can do parts of the west highland way from Milngavie, check out Loch Lomond and the Trossachs. If you’re fit you can climb a few accessible Munros. Ben Lomond or the Arrochar Alps, for example. You should have some decent weather to do all this still in September and October. For November and December thereare a lot of free museums in Glasgow: Kelvingrove Gallery, the Burrell collection (just voted best new museum in the UK) or the transport museum. The University of Glasgow has some great collections on display as well in the Hunterian and there are a few other museums on campus. All free. Stirling and Edinburgh aren’t far with great castles and a bit of that Harry Potter feel. You’ll find lots to do, I’m sure, even on a budget. by rudishort (Tue 18th Jul 2023 6:33am)

  • Yeah. I think that’s it. by rudishort (Fri 18th Aug 2023 5:51pm)
  • The buildings here in the UK are generally just really not well insulated, which leads to them being freezing in winter and hot in the summer. There is nothing mich you can do really, except buy a fan and wait until Monday when the temperature drops again. by rudishort (Sat 9th Sep 2023 7:04am)
  • They’re not built for keeping the heat in. Good insulation is what keeps the heat in, which at the same time would also keep the house cool in the summer. The reason the buildings are hot in the summer and cold in the winter is because we’re really bad at insulating our buildings. by rudishort (Sat 9th Sep 2023 7:08am)
  • I think it depends a bit on the property. Maybe 2 bed flats in the south side that are still reasonably priced will go way over. However, as soon as you hit 4-5 bed family homes in Jordanhill, for example, the tune changes. I’ve seen more than one list 1 Jordanhill school catchment area home reduced in price in the last months. People, especially families with school children, can no longer afford £400-500k houses at 5% mortgage rates. by rudishort (Thu 12th Oct 2023 7:33am)

  • Oh my. You drank too much of the kool aid. They paraded that almost naked woman through Gaza city. You know the one they killed at the festival. You’re not looking at this with a cool head. There are extreme terrorists in power in Gaza that have no issue killing innocent civilians. Most Palestinians aren’t that. But the people that call the shots in Gaza are. You’re delusional if you don’t recognise that. by rudishort (Sun 15th Oct 2023 6:00pm)
