  • I've been spending a lot of time at the Maternity unit at QUEH since my son was born 3 weeks ago, and yesterday they changed the rules to make wearing a mask mandatory for entering both the maternity bit and the main hospital. They give you a mask at the door. Walking around this morning getting breakfast and coffee to bring back to the Maternity unit, the number of people walking around inside with the masks either in their hands or pulled down under their chin was unreal. The staff were no better - no masks on the most part, and the two I saw wearing them (a nurse and an auxillary in the m&s) had them on inside out. Unless *someone* enforces the rule to wear a mandatory mask, people just won't do it; if the hospital can't/won't enforce it, it's hard to see how a minimum wage retail employee will manage it. by saladinzero (Tue 30th Jun 2020 5:49pm)
  • Nope, as of yesterday the rules were changed. Staff and patients should wear masks before entering the hospital and keep them on when inside. There's new signs up on the doors. by saladinzero (Tue 30th Jun 2020 7:15pm)
  • He's doing great, thanks. We hope to be out before the weekend, which will be nice. It's been a long three weeks in here... by saladinzero (Tue 30th Jun 2020 7:22pm)
  • Yep. My wife is a member of the staff Facebook page for the QUEH and there's been people asking on it how they should enforce this policy when no one is sticking to it. To be honest, in my three and a bit weeks of daily visits and the last week of essentially living on the ward, none of the hospital policies are followed. The staff ignore the hand gel at the entrance, they move the chairs about in the canteen to sit together (the signs say only two to a table), and so the patients just ignore it too. At least in the maternity unit it's taken much more seriously. My boy wouldn't cope too well with covid. by saladinzero (Tue 30th Jun 2020 8:48pm)

  • I'll tell you someone *not* to use...Simon Ash, once of High Street Architects. Not sure of his current trading name, but the guy is a complete con artist. He half-assed our project, it failed the council process and he disappeared with our money. Literally no-contact ghosting. The only time we heard from him after the council knocked back our application was when he accidentally sent us another client's paperwork via email, because their surname matched mine. by saladinzero (Thu 30th Jul 2020 10:30pm)
  • Yeah that looks like him. The section of his site called 'Disaster recovery!' is fairly ironic. We're hopefully a few days away from our new architect securing building control approval. • There's a wee guy who used to play the clarinet extremely badly outside Merchant Square at the weekends. He'd start out the evening terrible, but as he'd go off and drink his takings then come back to earn more his ability to play would get worse and worse. Eventually, it'd be the same song over and over, completely out of tune. Companies and entities like the council or HMRC or whatever have used the pandemic as an excuse to fuck about and cut back on their customer service. Just fucking pick up the phone. by saladinzero (Sat 10th Oct 2020 8:24pm)
  • Absolutely off the top of my head, the only thing I can think of is that they were topping their staffs' wages up to the 100% amount during the first furlough, and because of that precedent they don't want to do it again? • Just a heads up, the way the NHS has positioned itself for this stage of the pandemic means that not many practices are registering new NHS patients. The reasons are fairly complex, but boil down to them accepting you would basically be them working for free or even a loss if you require treatment that generates laboratory fees. You might be lucky enough to find one that brings you on out of essentially charity, but be prepared for practices to only offer you private registration/treatment. Source: am NHS dentist by saladinzero (Sun 20th Dec 2020 12:16pm)
  • If you're already registered with a dentist and move house you don't necessarily have to re-register somewhere else. Dentists aren't like GPs where they will refuse to see you if you're out of their catchment area. by saladinzero (Thu 24th Dec 2020 8:11pm)
  • Actually, it's the NHS that decided that, not dental practices. You can even live in other parts of the UK and be a registered patient in Scotland. by saladinzero (Thu 24th Dec 2020 10:46pm)
  • GPs make an absolute killing compared to dentists. Having to pay for NHS dentistry comes from the demand for free treatment being so high it nearly bankrupted the NHS in 1951. Well, dentistry and opticians. Anyway, having to pay is nothing to do with greedy (or not) modern dentists. If you qualify for benefits you can get free treatment. by saladinzero (Thu 24th Dec 2020 10:58pm)
  • That sounds like more of a question for the politicians who set the rules, not dentists. Don't blame those of us in the profession for your taxes not covering our work. If the government was willing to pay for it, all treatment would be free at the point of use like the rest of the NHS. Try contacting the Glasgow Dental Hospital and register yourself there. You might be lucky and get free treatment from the students. by saladinzero (Thu 24th Dec 2020 11:26pm)

  • You're actually not far off the mark there. It's a bit complicated (as everything to do with renumeration is with dentistry), but essentially the government has temporarily suspended how our payments are made. Normally, I do an NHS filling and get paid £x from the patient and £y from the NHS. At the moment, they're paying us a flat monthly rate of 80% of what I earned in the year before the pandemic. However, when I do a filling now the NHS is subtracting the £x payment the patient provides from the total monthly payment - the more work I do, the less the NHS pays me. It's so weird - I still take the same amount home at the end of the month. I can either work flat out, half assed, or do nothing and it won't matter. It's also why we're not keen on treating new patients - my payment is based on the patient numbers I had registered in 2019. Everyone I've taken on since 2020, I'm effectively treating for free (sometimes at cost, if they need lab work that I need to pay for). by saladinzero (Wed 18th Aug 2021 6:42pm)

I was frontline in primary care and I know that the government's leadership was disastrous and shambolic throughout. It's not fair that people are downvoting you for your opinion. Edit to add: Drug deaths are not fair to lay at any door but Westminster's. Drugs policy is not devolved. Similarly, I don't agree that kowtowing to the oil companies is a better alternative. If the last few months have shown anything, it's that the oil companies are not our friends. They are currently engaged in open warfare with the rest of us. by saladinzero (Sun 19th Jun 2022 12:01am)
  • > Better and cheaper public transport is required so people aren’t tempted to drive in. This is the key. The council have been having great fun with the stick approach, taking away free parking and setting up bus gates and this LEZ thing, but they really need to get on with the carrot now. I can park at the park and ride in Robroyston, but if the trains aren't running at times to suit then it's a pain in the ass. The bus is extortionate from where I live, it's honestly cheaper to drive in and pay parking. by saladinzero (Fri 24th Jun 2022 11:49am)

  • Covid has broken the old model of NHS dentistry. The government brought in lifelong registration back around 2010 or so, and this has led to practices having way too many patients registered per dentist. It was just about working because a fair proportion of those people only appeared sporadically, but now that we've been through covid these sporadic attenders are now all wanting to be seen at the same time, on top of our regular attenders. I can can't see all the people I have registered, let alone taking on new patients. If you saw me today for a checkup and needed to come back for a filling or whatever, you'd be lucky to get an appointment before November. I can't remember exactly, but before the change you were automatically deregistered by the NHS after three or four years of not attending. by saladinzero (Tue 23rd Aug 2022 5:12pm)

  • How much would healthcare cost you in the US? Gotta factor that in. by saladinzero (Sun 11th Dec 2022 4:17pm)
  • Do you know how much I pay out of pocket for my healthcare? £0. The point here is that a big salary of $100k is not going to be take-home pay after taxes. A large chunk will go to paying for insurance. I doubt you were on $100k as a teacher, by the way, so $200 probably represented a much higher proportion of your income on healthcare than what I actually paid in my income taxes towards our socialised healthcare system. If someone is looking at the relatively higher salaries on offer in the US, they need to remember the other outlays that you lot need to make from your paychecks. I'm not saying that that calculation will necessarily still favour remaining to work in the UK rather than emigrating abroad, but it's important to remember when comparing raw salaries. by saladinzero (Sun 11th Dec 2022 7:08pm)
  • There's so much evidence of how much the NHS cost per head versus the cost of healthcare systems around the world. Just Google it and have a look yourself. I agree that the service is being allowed to collapse, and this will surely cost people their lives. It should be criminal to be so incompetent in public office. However, if funding had even just kept pace with inflation things would not be this bad. The issue isn't the system is my point. by saladinzero (Sun 11th Dec 2022 11:16pm)

  • It's also most likely complete balls: > The name is first documented in the 15th and 16th centuries as Gorbaldis, and its etymology is unclear. It may be related to the Ecclesiastical Latin word garbale ('sheaf'), found in the Scottish Gaelic term garbal teind ('tenth sheaf'), a tithe of corn given to a parish rector. The taking of garbal teind was a right given to George Elphinstone in 1616 as part of his 19-year tack ('lease'). The placename would therefore mean 'the Sheaves'. The name is similar to a Lowland Scots word gorbal/gorbel/garbal/garbel ('unfledged bird'), perhaps a reference to lepers who were allowed to beg for alms in public. Gort a' bhaile ('garden of the town') conforms with certain suggestions made by A.G. Callant in 1888, but other interpretations are also popular. It regularly backs up and gridlocks itself due to the narrow entrance, and the cars backed out block the road in both directions. The car park is also split into two levels, with concrete ramps and metal railings which make parking on the lower level really awkward, especially if you have multiple people in the car - someone’s door is going to be up against a concrete wall. by saladinzero (Tue 30th May 2023 10:25pm)

  • By hygiene, I meant waste. More than doubling the capacity to 546 seems a brave choice with pipes designed to handle only 222. Additionally, the corridor and living spaces were sized for 222. Cramping people in to what were already limited spaces is a recipe for disaster, be it fire, sickness, or just the outbreak of violence humans are prone to when cooped up like animals. by saladinzero (Tue 8th Aug 2023 12:37am)
  • > I doubt "the pipes" are rated to handle 222 people Why? The ship will have been fitted out for the capacity for which it was designed. I doubt the government have added more toilets (and the pipework to support them). I also don't think that it has a sewage treatment system, but even so it was built to handle a fixed number of bums. by saladinzero (Tue 8th Aug 2023 8:59am)
  • > I'm rusty on all the legislation certification. But, if the vessel can't be run safely with the new capacity. That's on the Maritime and coastguard agency who would have done inspections and whatever insurer signed off on it. Seeing as the fire service have yet to sign off on it (that I last saw reported, at least), I don't know if I'd be so sure about that. Why do you keep putting the word pipes in scare-quotes? Do ships not use pipes and plumbing to move waste around? by saladinzero (Tue 8th Aug 2023 9:18am)
  • > Just that pipes won't be rated to a number of toilets. They must be rated to something, and that will be tied to the number of arses using the system. I don't believe that ships are built without sewage capacity in mind. There's no way that's not regulated. by saladinzero (Tue 8th Aug 2023 9:43am)
  • > I understand your concern, and I'm not saying there won't be issues. You could sort the issue with a better security system at the door, cameras, whatever, but a blue light is like a beacon to anyone visiting that it has been used as a shooting gallery in the past. I wouldn't rent/buy a place with needles lying in the close, but I equally wouldn't hand over my money if it had anti-injection lighting! by saladinzero (Tue 3rd Oct 2023 7:11pm)
  • Maybe it was apparent to you, but there's no evidence of it in what you wrote! by saladinzero (Tue 3rd Oct 2023 7:39pm)

  • I'm not trying to undermine the excellent advice you've been given already, but if you do decide to tell him to piss off then you should be prepared for more backlash. Personally, I wouldn't allow him to enter the home again and I certainly wouldn't have any conversations about rent face-to-face. I also wouldn't put it past this joker to try to evict you over this. Bearing in mind that he's already trodden on your rights with the no notice inspection then the mind games over the rent, he's probably not going to be following the law on evictions either. by saladinzero (Thu 26th Oct 2023 11:58am)

  • The Butchershop is better than the Spanish Butcher, in my opinion. Marco Pierre White's place on Waterloo Street (now closed) was one of the worst restaurants I've eaten in in Glasgow. If he has a new place, then maybe that's better, but it's was a huge disappointment. by saladinzero (Fri 3rd Nov 2023 9:43pm)

  • It's not that big, they only seem to be using a small part of the overall footprint of the place. I think most of it must be lying completely empty. by saladinzero (Sat 11th Nov 2023 8:42pm)
  • Where op was cycling is not counted as motorway, if you follow the off-ramp from the M8 on street view, there's an End of Motorway sign well before that roundabout. Personally, I'd still not have cycled on it because that particular roundabout is a death trap at the best of times, let alone on a bike. by saladinzero (Thu 16th Nov 2023 11:11pm)

  • Bread Meats Bread, went in recently, and shrinkflation has hit their sides **hard**. The burger was okay, but you used to get a big dish of chips that'd be enough to keep two people going. Now, it's just enough for one. by saladinzero (Thu 30th Nov 2023 11:47pm)
  • Their maple syrup bacon sweet potato fries are incredible and they don't hold back on the toppings, it's just made it very expensive to eat there now. by saladinzero (Fri 1st Dec 2023 6:01pm)
  • Imo it should not be on the other passengers to enforce that - the cabin crew should notice and deal with it, especially on a 4 hour flight. by saladinzero (Tue 5th Dec 2023 10:33pm)
  • Unpopular opinion - fast food restaurants should charge a 10 or 20p fee for single-use plastic sauce pots like we do for carrier bags, to be donated to community clean-up projects. by saladinzero (Wed 6th Dec 2023 3:27pm)
  • Tiso Glasgow Outdoor Experience has a good range of outdoor walking/trainer hybrids. It's a bit pricey, but there's loads of choice and a great (and not pricey) cafe upstairs which is a bit of a hidden gem. by saladinzero (Wed 6th Dec 2023 3:30pm)

  • Super Bario doesn't have Point Break. Unfortunately, the last time I was there (about a month ago), it was really run down. A fair proportion of the machines were either broken entirely or in very poor repair, the pinball machines in particular. Wouldn't recommend it any more, which is a shame as it used to be really good. by saladinzero (Tue 12th Dec 2023 9:51am)
