  • I don't quite understand why they are so bad. Well apparently they are, as everyone here said to stay away from them, but I kinda thought the area where the flats are would be a better indicator than the type of building. Townhead, Drygate and Gorbals all seem pretty gentrified, so I thought these wouldn't be as bad. by Woodpeckerus1337 (Mon 24th May 2021 10:27am)
  • This was exactly my thinking. If you just step out of a building (in Townhead) you are directly in the massive newly built student campus. Can't see how this could be so bad. Similar thing with Drygate I guess... by Woodpeckerus1337 (Mon 24th May 2021 8:58pm)
  • Of course agree with all of the comments by others, but I am a huge fan of LinkedIn. Found my first job there while still finishing my dissertation - I would NEVER EVER come across it otherwise. The only 'catch' with LinkedIn is (in my opinion) it is not really an immediate solution. You would come across much more interesting job opportunities if you have an extensive network of connections there. If you find a company you like, get in touch directly with someone that works there. People are usually fairly responsive as it is much more personal approach than sending emails to 'Dear Sir/Madam'. Took me around 1 year or so, untill I could say I had a network of pretty cool people in industries I am interested in. Treat it more like a second FB without all the spam posts, but with content you genuinely care about. May sound stupid, but LinkedIn became kind of my main social network and source of newsfeed. I would really encourage you to set-up a profile, give it a go, add a few connections every week or so and soon you will have a platform with network of people who are interested in similar fileds as you are. One more thing: don't be affraid to connect with people you don't know! If you find their 'job title' something that would be of interest, just send a connect invitation :) hope that helps. by Woodpeckerus1337 (Tue 25th May 2021 2:49pm)
  • Great to hear! Which side of the Vicky road though? Apparently this is quite important? by Woodpeckerus1337 (Tue 1st Jun 2021 4:15pm)
  • Riverside is exactly where I stayed. Although I must admit Rawden Place (where I lived for 2 years) is probably as nice as it gets. Though I walked quite often through the 'deep end' of Riverside at night, never had any bother at all... by Woodpeckerus1337 (Tue 1st Jun 2021 8:49pm)
  • Goes quite against the whole craft beer ethos, but I've been very impressed with the selection in big Tesco superstores. Some very good quality stuff there, but rather hit a local beer shop if you can :) by Woodpeckerus1337 (Sat 12th Jun 2021 8:05pm)
  • I'm probably not in the exact same situation but still... Moved to the city 2 months ago, I'm employed with council, my girlfriend is a PhD student, both with proper Slaivc names (which I can't see as any kind of advantage in this situation). We were quite lucky probably, but got a wonderful place which was our first choice by far. While looking for a flat we've seen quite a lot of them being online for 2+ months. So I would imagine at that point, the agency will be willing to let the place to the applicants who are not 'perfect'. My point is that maybe you have a look at flats that are online for a couple of months or so, I'd think you would have better chances of getting it? Anyway, good luck! :) by Woodpeckerus1337 (Mon 21st Jun 2021 12:48pm)
  • Thanks everyone! Also, we are planning to see Mount Stuart and do a walk on the south of the island (the loop that starts at Kilchatan Bay). Any other recommendations on things to do? by Woodpeckerus1337 (Mon 21st Jun 2021 6:16pm)
  • As it is allowed to drink inside now, it feels that the general capacity of city centre pubs expanded enormously. I managed to get a place in Brewdog in Merchant City last Friday quite easily. I went there after work (5.30-ish) and there were still quite a few tables left. by Woodpeckerus1337 (Wed 23rd Jun 2021 2:28pm)
  • Areas I'm looking at: Calton/Bridgeton, Southside (Govanhill), Cessnock... Anything that's relatively close to City Centre really. by Woodpeckerus1337 (Wed 28th Jul 2021 1:02pm)

The routes might be slightly outdated and they are not showing Spaces for People interventions, but a good baseline nonetheless. by Woodpeckerus1337 (Thu 19th Aug 2021 11:12am)
  • That's what I was afraid of tbh. Is there anything you would recommend (that doesn't go massively over 300)? Also, what is the difference between crap and good IRs? Do the expensive ones heat the room better? Or do they just last longer and are more durable? Sorry but as you can see I don't really have much experience here, just a bit of background from what I've read on the internet. by Woodpeckerus1337 (Mon 13th Sep 2021 2:57pm)
  • Electric heating, very high ceilings, draughty single glazed windows... If I want to stay somewhat warm during the winter, I would need to blast 3kW fan heaters 24/7. by Woodpeckerus1337 (Tue 14th Sep 2021 11:12am)
  • Don't really care about the meal deal tbh. Photos look amazing, might head there tomorrow. Thanks by Woodpeckerus1337 (Wed 6th Oct 2021 12:24pm)
  • Agree. Cheese pasties and steak pies are just unreal. by Woodpeckerus1337 (Wed 6th Oct 2021 3:45pm)
  • Not exactly vintage, but I've found some spectacular ones from Alasdair Rae. Some of his stuff available here: [https://automaticknowledge.co.uk/prints/](https://automaticknowledge.co.uk/prints/) This one also looks like a piece of art itself: [https://www.etsy.com/uk/listing/920601927/3d-effect-1957-scotland-geological-map?ref=internal\_similar\_listing\_bot-1&frs=1](https://www.etsy.com/uk/listing/920601927/3d-effect-1957-scotland-geological-map?ref=internal_similar_listing_bot-1&frs=1) by Woodpeckerus1337 (Tue 12th Oct 2021 1:07pm)
  • Oaka on George St. is decent. Especially for the price. 2 for 2£ I believe by Woodpeckerus1337 (Tue 12th Oct 2021 2:03pm)
  • Indeed. This + the car park opposite St Enoch shopping centre [https://www.scottishconstructionnow.com/article/major-mixed-use-proposal-to-plug-st-enoch-gap-site](https://www.scottishconstructionnow.com/article/major-mixed-use-proposal-to-plug-st-enoch-gap-site) If done right, these 2 developments could really transform the east side if city centre. Apparently there are plans to redesign High Street and Duke Street which is quite exciting as well. by Woodpeckerus1337 (Wed 13th Oct 2021 11:38am)
  • I kinda work in IT and it seems like excessive bureaucracy as nr 1, followed by incompetence to some degree at high level positions. Being comfortable with what is in place and not willing to change anything seems a big issue. by Woodpeckerus1337 (Fri 15th Oct 2021 10:31am)
  • A bit late to the party, but I've seen Overtone's non-alcoholic milk stout on tap yesterday in Shilling Brewery. My feeling is it's probably even better than Guinness. Anyway, have a look at Shilling, they generally have a few non-alcoholic beers on tap. by Woodpeckerus1337 (Wed 20th Oct 2021 11:35am)
  • Thanks for sharing a bit of reason. It is baffling how concerned people get about events like these when the (public) life as we know it went back to pretty much normal a few months ago. by Woodpeckerus1337 (Mon 25th Oct 2021 10:38am)
  • Definitely. They make their own lavash/wraps as well, it's just unreal how good it is. by Woodpeckerus1337 (Mon 25th Oct 2021 11:30am)

Pretty sure it's open data as well, so might be useful if you are into this sort of thing. by Woodpeckerus1337 (Fri 29th Oct 2021 11:08am)
  • Being from Europe I can say that's certainly the case. What struck me most when I came to Scotland is this sort of scenario: A pub on Friday, packed with drunk people. 11:50PM, a bartender rings a bell, shouting that the place is closing in 10min. 00:02AM, noone else is in, the pub is shut. This sort of thing doesn't happen (in my part of) Europe. There is always: oh come on one more... we are gonna be quick. And you finish your shift 30-60min later than you're supposed to. by Woodpeckerus1337 (Tue 9th Nov 2021 10:14am)
  • I guess people are also used to be out longer. The times when kitchens and bars/pubs close in the UK is ridiculous if you're from Spain/Italy/France, probably even Germany. Anyway, that's no excuse for a behaviour like this. by Woodpeckerus1337 (Tue 9th Nov 2021 10:15am)
  • why not flat share for a start? You can get something pretty decent for 400 bills included for sure. then you slowly work out the budgets and see where you stand. if anything, Glasgow is pretty decent value for money when it comes to accommodation, so that's encouraging at least :) by Woodpeckerus1337 (Fri 12th Nov 2021 12:28am)
  • Please don't take this the wrong way as I genuinely don't know: Are solar panels in Glasgow even viable? I mean it is the cloudiest/least sunny city in Europe. Well I guess they must be, if they are actually installed on some roofs... by Woodpeckerus1337 (Fri 12th Nov 2021 11:52am)
  • It's quite baffling how enforcement is not really a thing in the UK. by Woodpeckerus1337 (Fri 12th Nov 2021 3:20pm)
  • This + if you want to do something of any real value, you would probably need to rip out all roads at Bromielaw (maybe just leave room for buses). Which would cause a public backlash that the council is just not willing to take. by Woodpeckerus1337 (Mon 15th Nov 2021 3:27pm)
  • Pretty sure you can (at least above the weir). There are several rowing clubs around Glasgow Green, on the weekends there is loads of rowers out. Surely you can just take you own boat and go for a pedal. by Woodpeckerus1337 (Tue 16th Nov 2021 9:44am)
  • The Scotia, Beer Cafe by Woodpeckerus1337 (Wed 24th Nov 2021 4:36pm)
  • And I give up on people moaning about housing market. FFS prices in Glasgow are one of the most affordable in the UK. In fuckin Cardiff you can't get a 1-bedroom flat for less than 130k. Sure prices are going up, but they are still cheaper than in some Central/Eastern European cities where salaries are 50% or less of those in Glasgow. Downvote as much as you like, but geez get some perspective folks. [https://www.rightmove.co.uk/properties/82660434#/?channel=RES\_BUY](https://www.rightmove.co.uk/properties/82660434#/?channel=RES_BUY) very nice end of terrace for 115k [https://www.rightmove.co.uk/properties/112917377#/?channel=RES\_BUY](https://www.rightmove.co.uk/properties/112917377#/?channel=RES_BUY) fancy 2-bed in Mount Florida for 140k [https://www.rightmove.co.uk/properties/116523722#/?channel=RES\_BUY](https://www.rightmove.co.uk/properties/116523722#/?channel=RES_BUY) cute semi-detached for 130k by Woodpeckerus1337 (Fri 26th Nov 2021 10:41am)
  • Maybe Mt Florida is a bad example really as South side is probably the most desireable location atm. But hey, you can get a solid property for around 150k somewhere else in the city. If you are willing to commute 10min by train and look in Paisley - oh boy! Maybe people just don't realise how the housing market looks like elsewhere? by Woodpeckerus1337 (Fri 26th Nov 2021 10:53am)
  • Do a simple search on avg. house prices on Rightmove in comparable cities like Sheffield, Manchester, Leeds, Newcastle and you will see Glasgow is roughly 15-20% cheaper than these places. And don't let me start with Edinburgh, Bristol, etc. by Woodpeckerus1337 (Fri 26th Nov 2021 11:44am)
  • Just saying it is cheaper than (probably) 90% of the UK. Hence why people are buying like crazy. It's good city to invest in property I guess. by Woodpeckerus1337 (Fri 26th Nov 2021 11:45am)
  • Again, have a quick glance at rightmove. And the 'houses are shit in comparison' is not really based on anything tangible is it? by Woodpeckerus1337 (Fri 26th Nov 2021 3:24pm)
  • Your calculation is spot on really. Just an advice from my experience (came to Glasgow from EU): Don't underestimate the heating costs during the winter if you want to be reasonably warm! Insulation of most buildings is pretty shocking (even by my Eastern European standards), combined with single glazed windows means you need to keep radiators on constantly and if you are heating with electricity instead of gas, that becomes a problem. Quite a lot of people here seem to just accept they will be freezing in the winter, so they don't run the radiators as much, hence the generally lower bills than you would expect in the winter. When looking at the apartments try to find something with energy efficiency of C or above and you'll be fine. Sorry for a subtle rant, but it's this time of the year :) by Woodpeckerus1337 (Mon 29th Nov 2021 1:13pm)

  • Damn, sounds quite dangerous. by Woodpeckerus1337 (Wed 1st Dec 2021 10:27am)
  • I often wonder why the pure basics of urban planning are more often than not forgotten - active ground floor with whatever activities, with something, anything! Additionally, if you can configure the buildings as perimeter blocks and keep them up to 5 stories... well you get the modern version of West and South End - which surprise, surprise are the most desirable places to live in the city. by Woodpeckerus1337 (Wed 1st Dec 2021 2:18pm)
  • Understandable to a degree I think. Wouldn't want to live on the first 3 or 4 floors of middle buildings. Those probably don't get a single beam of direct sunlight at any point in the year. by Woodpeckerus1337 (Wed 1st Dec 2021 2:21pm)
  • Well, I have a very good Indian friend here and he absolutely loves it. In his own words "Getting away from the heat and unbearable amount of crowd on the streets" is what cuts it for him. :) Keep an eye on this sub though, there are opportunities to meet people through this sub, do some activities etc. And folk in general are very helpful. by Woodpeckerus1337 (Fri 3rd Dec 2021 9:44am)
  • And I've just came in. by Woodpeckerus1337 (Fri 3rd Dec 2021 9:48am)
  • From a tenants side: DJ Alexander have been superb. A bit inflexible in terms of keys handover, but otherwise great. Had an issue with the washing machine - got fixed the same day! Some issues with communal door, got fixed in a matter of days as well. Very positive experience so far, especially regarding the maintenance. by Woodpeckerus1337 (Mon 6th Dec 2021 10:59am)
  • Dealt a little bit with Allen & Harris (though not in Scotland) which wasn't good at all. Didn't even rent the property from them in the end because of it. by Woodpeckerus1337 (Mon 6th Dec 2021 11:03am)
  • Public sector: [https://www.myjobscotland.gov.uk/](https://www.myjobscotland.gov.uk/) Private sector: check out companies like WSP, AECOM, Jacobs, Atkins, Arup, Arcadis, Systra, Ramboll (I probably forgot a few). • Also, keep in mind Edinburgh, Falkirk, Stirling, etc are all in commutable distance from Glasgow. Edinburgh will take 50ish minutes by train, while Falkirk and Stirling can be reached in around 30min or so by train. Being from Canada, not sure whats your perception of public transport, but trains in central belt of Scotland are very frequent and relatively fast, so pretty good commute option. Sure, they can be a bit unreliable at times, but hey - who guarantees you there won't be any delays on the road? by Woodpeckerus1337 (Tue 7th Dec 2021 2:35pm)
  • Oh, I see. Good catch, thanks! Will change it soon :) by Woodpeckerus1337 (Tue 21st Dec 2021 11:04am)
  • I will publish the project on GitHub at some point in the New Year I think. The code is an absolute mess though, so I wouldn't advise anyone to dive into it tbh. Need to do at least a little bit of reconfiguring before publishing it by Woodpeckerus1337 (Tue 21st Dec 2021 11:53am)
  • Thanks. Apache-Postgres/Postgis-Flask-Leaflet by Woodpeckerus1337 (Tue 21st Dec 2021 1:58pm)
  • I'm aware that's an issue. If you have any space left on the screen that's not covered by up pop-up (probably at the bottom) try to drag/move left and right by draging a little piece of screen/map that is not covered by a pop-up. by Woodpeckerus1337 (Tue 21st Dec 2021 1:57pm)

  • damn... this looks like a serious and proper project to me! I don't have any experience in software development whatsoever, so I just took this as an opportunity to practice. Honestly I really need to reconfigure it a bit, as I am sure any developer's eyes will start to bleed looking at the code this is running on at the moment. by Woodpeckerus1337 (Wed 22nd Dec 2021 10:50am)
  • Thanks, really appreciate the feedback. I need to take a couple of weeks off during the holidays now, but will come back to it in the new years. Can I get in touch at some point for some further suggestions if need be? Cheers by Woodpeckerus1337 (Fri 24th Dec 2021 1:18pm)

  • If you want to go a bit less hipster, you can try Damasqino. Far from being a vegan restaurant as they do a lot of grilled meats, but they do have quite a few vegan options, all of which are absolutely amazing! Loads of vegan starters/small plates. If she despises places that are throwing pieces of meat on the grill constantly, well that's kind of a no-no place then. by Woodpeckerus1337 (Wed 5th Jan 2022 2:14pm)

  • Day 2 PCR test should arrive on Wednesday, got it today... So technically I'm breaking the law as I did my day 2 test after 4 days being back in the UK? Hopefully nothing will come of it, but still feel a bit uneasy about it... by Woodpeckerus1337 (Sat 8th Jan 2022 11:17pm)
  • Makes sense. Good to have this sort of insight, so people can go from "fucking useless Royal Mail" to a bit more understanding narrative. At least you'd hope that would be the case. by Woodpeckerus1337 (Sat 8th Jan 2022 11:20pm)
  • To be honest, choosing between Paisley, Shettleston, Scotstoun/Whiteinch, etc. I really don't mind which area it is exactly. They all seems pretty similar. On the other hand, it might be easier to let/sell a flat in Paisley than in Shettleston for example... by Woodpeckerus1337 (Thu 13th Jan 2022 4:20pm)
  • I was in similar situation, though in my case it was Vodafone's fault so they gave me a mobile wi-fi router until they actually installed the router. It was ok-ish for 2 weeks or so, but anything more than that would be a stretch. I mean it is fine for general work, but video calls were quite choppy. They gave me this thing: [https://www.amazon.co.uk/Vodafone-Mobile-R219h-150Mbps-included-White/dp/B08XMJC1VB](https://www.amazon.co.uk/Vodafone-Mobile-R219h-150Mbps-included-White/dp/B08XMJC1VB/ref=asc_df_B08XMJC1VB/?tag=googshopuk-21&linkCode=df0&hvadid=499345429197&hvpos=&hvnetw=g&hvrand=2477845949047575357&hvpone=&hvptwo=&hvqmt=&hvdev=c&hvdvcmdl=&hvlocint=&hvlocphy=9046929&hvtargid=pla-1225810129435&psc=1) by Woodpeckerus1337 (Fri 14th Jan 2022 10:15am)
  • I quite like the Beer Cafe. by Woodpeckerus1337 (Tue 25th Jan 2022 7:05pm)
  • Beer Cafe will definitely be on quieter side, but it's really chill atmosphere. OK priced for Merchant City as well, big selection of international beer which is always welcome. I feel like it's more of a 30-40 year olds kinda place, though I'm 28 and really like it there. by Woodpeckerus1337 (Tue 25th Jan 2022 7:33pm)
  • As long as your windows are not facing that abomination called St Enoch shopping centre, you should be fine. by Woodpeckerus1337 (Wed 26th Jan 2022 1:59pm)
  • Mine was 24.5k, in the mid-2019. Was very happy with it tbh, but at that point as a first job, I'd probably take just anything above 20k. Definitely go for it, once you get your foot into the industry it is sooooo much easier to find next job that pays more. With my 2.5 years of experience to date (which is not a lot really), I feel my options are wide open in terms of picking the right job. I am just starting a new job in March actually so hurray for me! :) by Woodpeckerus1337 (Fri 28th Jan 2022 10:47am)
  • Had great experience with Sustrans in Wales, though I'm pretty sure the company culture and all that is pretty much the same here in Scotland. Fantastic manager/s, they genuinely do care about the employees and things they do overall, great people, very supportive environment. Salary is OK, chances for promotion as well if you stay long enough. by Woodpeckerus1337 (Tue 1st Feb 2022 2:35pm)
  • I was a 'Technical Project Officer' aka Technician. Have done quite a lot of work with GIS, CAD, Photoshop, InDesign, etc. I've created some promotional videos, did some proper data analysis, helped with workshops in schools. I did all sorts of things with them really. by Woodpeckerus1337 (Wed 2nd Feb 2022 10:00am)
  • As someone who's not from the UK originally, I always need to remind myself in the situations like this: Health and Safety regulations and compliance in the UK is the law above all the laws. It is the holiest of them all, the one that cannot be breached and the one and only that should be taken 110% seriously. No matter how bizarre it is. by Woodpeckerus1337 (Wed 2nd Feb 2022 10:22am)
  • Worked in Edinburgh in 6 Degrees North. Good folk, great work environment, pretty relaxed. They have a bar in Partick as well, so assume it would be similar. Though they specialise in craft beer, so you would need to know your way around beer styles etc. I loved my time there :) by Woodpeckerus1337 (Tue 8th Feb 2022 12:13pm)
  • This! Wider streets make a whole lot difference. Can't really walk side-by-side with someone in Edinburgh at all. Constantly stopping to give way people passing by... Just gets annoying after a while by Woodpeckerus1337 (Wed 9th Feb 2022 4:39pm)
  • I've been with Vodafone for 3years now and haven't had any issues. In fact I was moving home from Cardiff to Glasgow and the whole 'transfer' was quite smooth. Although a little screw-up occured they fixed it flawlessly. by Woodpeckerus1337 (Fri 11th Feb 2022 5:25pm)
  • How I love when people don't call themselves fucking expats. Cheers from another immigrant! by Woodpeckerus1337 (Wed 23rd Feb 2022 3:49pm)
  • Not sure what's going on in people's heads. I went to the cinema yesterday and 90% of people just left their empty cans of coke, crisps and candy without any hesitation. Like it's something completely normal (and at this point I assume this is just regular expected behaviour). Probably the justification is "Somebody is paid to clean this place anyway, it's their job". Then you just take this exact same mentality and mirror it on the street "It's GGCs job to clean the streets anyway, so might just drop my trash anywhere". And the people from cinema weren't wee neds or whatever, but a mix of people from the age of 20 to 50... by Woodpeckerus1337 (Wed 23rd Feb 2022 3:46pm)

  • A guy currently living there said there's been 4-5 leaks in 7 years so far, though none of them in his flat. I am thinking it's an inevitable thing that will happen, just wondering if it is a major inconvenience that will cause some further damage (damp, rot, etc.) or something that can be fixed in a matter of few days and everything goes back to normal. Apparently everyone always chips in when the repairs are due. by Woodpeckerus1337 (Sun 27th Feb 2022 7:46pm)
  • Not really. Just didn't expect the filming at half past midnight. by Woodpeckerus1337 (Wed 2nd Mar 2022 7:00pm)

  • No. It was my decision to take a job in Warrington but live in Glasgow. I always knew I will have to pay for the commute. But I though I can stomach 20£ a week, but 70 is quite a stretch. by Woodpeckerus1337 (Thu 31st Mar 2022 7:44pm)

  • Me and my partner tried over the last couple of months. I'm on a permanent contract, she has a PhD stipend. When calculating the affordability and how much we could borrow, they didn't even count that income, let alone increase the borrowing potential based on that. As long as the bank is concerned: PhD stipend = unemployed = no income. Sadly... by Woodpeckerus1337 (Mon 18th Apr 2022 10:02pm)
  • My estate agent is my solicitor I guess, as they do both services. I think it won't go as smooth, since I will be requesting the change as I'm not happy with the current arrangement. by Woodpeckerus1337 (Mon 9th May 2022 3:10pm)
  • Maybe not as relevant as some of the other comments, but there's my 5 cents: I have a degree in planning and started working for one of the UK charities. Spent 3 years working for them and started learning code on my own after work and on weekends. Took just short of 2 years of home learning and practice to land my first job in IT. I guess I could do it a bit faster, but I wanted to transition into fairly niche part of IT, so took me a bit longer to get the grip of all the pieces of the puzzle. Plus I really didn't do some insane strict learning schedule. If I felt like having a week off, I had a week off. But generally speaking tried to work in 'concentrated blocks' of 2-3 months. I would start a project that would take me 2-3 months to complete. During that time I would try to put in 10-15 hours of work per week. After I finished the project, I would take 2 months off, then do another project. Not the most efficient way to do it, I know - but that is what worked for me. I simply need some time to enjoy and do whatever I want in between. Hope this helps at least a bit. by Woodpeckerus1337 (Tue 24th May 2022 8:36pm)
  • Saw a gull munching up on a dead pigeon on Buchanan Street a few weeks ago. Absolute savage by Woodpeckerus1337 (Tue 31st May 2022 11:41pm)
  • Beer Cafe is a very decent place to just hangout. You're not getting a pint for 3£ though, but quite a gew sifferent option for £4.50-ish... by Woodpeckerus1337 (Wed 9th Nov 2022 3:57pm)
  • For me shwarma at Damasqino is ok. Good but nothing special, but oh boy the other stuff on the menu is amazing! Probably best price performance you can get in the whole city. I go there with my gf a couple of time a month, 25 pounds between the two of us for fuckload of delicious food and a drink. by Woodpeckerus1337 (Thu 1st Dec 2022 5:28pm)
