  • I've started using pubs to work in more than coffee shops. All have decent WiFi now and most have a decent selection of alcohol free beer if getting pissed while working isn't your thing. Usually nice, quiet atmosphere during the day and I feel a lot more comfortable nursing a pint for a couple of hours rather than an empty cup of coffee. Plenty of decent, quiet ones near the uni. The Aragon, Snaffle, 78 to name a few. by mwprevention (Fri 8th Nov 2019 10:00am)
  • Fucking hell how shite is it that this is what's replaced T in the park. I know it had its issues towards the end but it was a proper rite of passage for kids across Scotland and had some pretty decent line-ups for a number of years. Think the Sunday night main stage one year had arctic monkeys, the strokes and the who all following each other on the same bill, not to mention the other stages and the pure filth that could be found in the slam tent. Some great small scottish festivals to choose from nowadays but nothing on the scale of T at its height. by mwprevention (Wed 27th Nov 2019 10:45pm)
  • It was run by the student's association so in the past whenever it made a loss (which, like many student unions, was pretty often) then GSA would be able to find a bit of extra cash to cover the deficit. Reading between the lines but I'm guessing that spare cash is at a premium now as GSA deals with the fallout from literally going up in flames twice. by mwprevention (Thu 16th Jan 2020 10:05am)
  • Yep was there. As a lot of people have said the trouble only really kicked off when the music got turned off. This wasn't done by the police but instead by the guys who owned the soundsystem as they had another party scheduled for that night. People thought they police had spiked it, some fights broke out and then the police charged in and mayhem ensued. Cracking day up till then. by mwprevention (Sat 9th May 2020 8:21am)
  • So I live round the corner and this would mean that many of my car journeys would be inconvenienced if it was shut permanently. However I also visit the park at least once a day with my kids and it has been fucking AMAZING not to be constantly worrying about whether they're going to run out between some parked cars and get run over by one of the many roasters who think that a straight stretch of road is the perfect place to accelerate like a prick. At the end of the day it's a big fuck off road running through the middle of one of the city's centrepiece parks and if the position was reversed there's no fucking way we'd be considering opening up a busy route through a park to shave a few minutes off journey times. Also there are no less than 4 subway stops (1 of which has a massive car park) and an overground station all within half a mile. Keep the bottom open for the museum and add some disabled parking bays there and at the other end for access. Keep a route open for emergency vehicles and, if you want to compromise, let taxis use it with a 10mph speed limit. The main downside I can see is increased traffic on university avenue but tbh the entire west end needs a rethink in traffic management (esp finneston/argyle st area) and this seems like the ideal time to do something about it. by mwprevention (Fri 15th May 2020 8:27am)
  • The Cathkin Braes country park is only a bit beyond Linn Park and has hands down the best view over Glasgow (although a bit of an uphill slog if you're running) From Maryhill locks you can also continue along the canal (along the left-hand bank) up to Possil Marsh Nature Reserve and back Finally, a loop that starts in the West End, goes over the bridge at the BBC building, through Govan, through the Clyde Tunnel walkway and back through Partick is about 10k and pretty enjoyable by mwprevention (Tue 14th Jul 2020 1:24pm)
  • Dawsholm park is an unexpected gem and has the world's most northerly population of wild/feral parrots. Cathkin braes too is a great wee walk. by mwprevention (Sun 1st Nov 2020 8:03am)
  • Mojama, fuck yeah! £1 for all drinks on Monday, Stella, Guiness, single malt whisky, wine. Fill your boots then throw up in a corner when you inevitably get lost trying to locate the toilet. by mwprevention (Tue 17th Nov 2020 7:24am)
  • Looks ideal, thanks! by mwprevention (Mon 11th Jan 2021 11:45am)
  • Thanks for the detailed response! All great ideas. We'll definitely be spending time inside but it's a pretty small flat and it's good for all of us if we can get out for a portion of the day. My wife was the one who took time off last time around so I know what it's like trying to focus with a toddler running around. She's got a scooter but is still a bit small for it. Will definitely give the treasure hunt a go. by mwprevention (Thu 14th Jan 2021 11:57am)
  • At this stage I'd now just like to get to the bottom of why bins and recycling are such a fucking shitshow in Glasgow compared to other regions. Is it that the council are totally apathetic? Is it the logistics of collecting so many bins from tenement closes? Are the staff who work on collections part of a union that have the council's balls in a vice and are totally resistant to change? Is it just a factor of having far more rubbish to deal with than any other council? A combination of some/all these things? I feel like I could rest easier if I had a better understanding of why it's so shit and why it never gets any better. The ridiculous experiment with food bins being a case in point. I know uptake was poor but ours were collected exactly twice in the 2 years they were supposed to be in operation. Not exactly helpful when you're trying to get buy in for this sort of thing.. by mwprevention (Tue 19th Jan 2021 6:05pm)
  • If you're up for a really long drive, or if you're willing to camp for a night, then it takes about 3 1/2 hours to drive up the a82 through Glencoe, past Fort William and all the way to the arisaig/morar/mallaig coastline. It's an epic drive and you end up on one of those picture perfect white sandy beaches they use in the tourist brochures watching the sun set over Skye and the small isles, all in the time it takes to watch fellowship of the ring. Brings a year to my eye just thinking about it, fucking hell I need a holiday. by mwprevention (Wed 17th Feb 2021 8:41am)
  • You'll notice the difference right away. Lived in the South East of England for a while and it felt like all the soap was broken. by mwprevention (Fri 5th Mar 2021 9:03am)
  • The colour order is reversed so this looks to be a reference to the original french flag design that was primarily in use from 1790 until 1794, when the modified design by Jacques-Louis David was adopted. It could also be an attempt to mimic the practice of hoisting a ship's ensign upside down to indicate distress, but there's little evidence that this was ever common practice in the French Navy. So it seems like the person that did this is trying to make some kind of statement about the similarities between the economic and social tensions of today being reminiscent of the early French Republic. Why they've chosen to do this in Bellhouston park is anyone's guess though. Perhaps some of r/glasgow's resident history buffs could help work this one out. by mwprevention (Mon 22nd Mar 2021 11:20am)
  • Have lived next to the park for about 12 years and to be fair it's gotten way worse over time. The hill on a sunny day has always been a busy place but ever since a couple of videos of people dancing on the hill went viral 3/4 years ago it's become THE place for all the school age teenagers of greater Glasgow to congregate and it just turns into an absolute shit show. At times it's felt downright dangerous and I've seen young families having to dive out of the way of groups of bams knocking lumps out of each other. So I agree that the police/ council need to do something, also agree that the majority shouldn't be penalised and should be able to enjoy a drink in the park without having to constantly look over their shoulder. Making public drinking legal while having a visible police presence to stop things getting out of hand would probably be the most sensible option by mwprevention (Fri 2nd Apr 2021 7:05am)
  • Can you just rock up? Thought you needed to be a member or be signed in by one. by mwprevention (Sat 10th Apr 2021 12:14pm)
  • Donated. Absolutely brilliant station that's cheered me up on countless occasions over the years. Really hope they come through this, would be a massive loss if they went off air by mwprevention (Thu 6th May 2021 10:46pm)

  • Second what other people have said about being prepared for the weather to change frequently. Also advocate getting a jacket that stretches down past your waist. The wind means that rain is often coming at you horizontally and it's rubbish when the tops of your legs get soaked through, particularly when walking. For the same reason umbrellas are of some use in Summer but more likely to be a hindrance from Sept-May. by mwprevention (Tue 18th May 2021 11:16am)
  • GG brothers in finneston has a selection of absolutely cracking German beers in a fridge towards the back. by mwprevention (Fri 11th Jun 2021 8:49pm)
  • If you're really, really keen you can actually start the route from Kelvingrove park by walking up the Kelvin walkway then following the river all the way up to Milngavie. Not part of the official route but pretty cool that you can basically walk from the centre of the city all the way to fort william. https://www.walkhighlands.co.uk/glasgow/kelvin-walkway.shtml by mwprevention (Wed 7th Jul 2021 8:12pm)
  • If you go a couple of miles past Rowardennan you come out of the camping management zone and can camp anywhere you like, including along the lochshore. Up around loch Chon/loch arklet is also nice by mwprevention (Thu 15th Jul 2021 9:24pm)
  • Used to do it pretty regularly before covid as I had to go down there for work once a month, couldn't afford the train and didn't want to fly. It's honestly not that bad if you've got 1) something to use as a pillow 2) Ear plugs or noise cancelling headphones 3) An eye mask (essential IMO) and ideally something to use as a blanket (e.g. a jacket or a fleece). With all of those you can more or less insulate yourself from any of the horrors others have mentioned. Also don't drink a shitload of booze or any other fluids just before you go, for obvious reasons but do have some snacks handy to keep you going. Other options are definitely more comfortable but for <£10 it's definitely bearable and way less knackering than driving the whole way (which I've also done on numerous occasions). by mwprevention (Wed 21st Jul 2021 3:08pm)
  • DELETED I'd be very surprised if you had any trouble. Might think twice about walking alone in through the park at night but Kelvin way itself is pretty well lit, has people passing through at most hours and it's generally in one of the safer parts of town. You're more likely to get startled by a passing fox than getting jumped and your bike nicked IMO. by mwprevention (Tue 12th Oct 2021 10:21pm)
  • Ah right enough. What others have said then. You'll probably be fine but likely safer (and probably faster) taking roads instead. by mwprevention (Wed 13th Oct 2021 6:49am)
  • Dumbarton road, Victoria road and shawlands all have plenty. Salvation army on Dumbarton road (the one opposite gallus) has the widest range of stuff of any charity shop I've been to, although has been getting more expensive of late. Cat protection on crow road is also surprisingly good. by mwprevention (Wed 17th Nov 2021 11:40am)
  • Huh, always thought it was something to do with the exhibition way back, thanks for clearing that up. One of my favourite bits of the park as well. by mwprevention (Wed 17th Nov 2021 11:48am)
  • I often use Wetherspoon's. Buy a tea or coffee for £1.30 and get free refills all day. No qualms about staying long or spending as little as I can. Staff rarely give a fuck if you stay all day and not spend much. Although if you want somewhere nice and to actually support the business then the glad cafe is a good shout. by mwprevention (Thu 25th Nov 2021 9:51am)
  • As others have said, pest control will put some poison down and set traps but if you don't find and block off the places they're getting in you'll just get more, maybe not immediately but eventually they'll be back. Try and find where pipes come into the flat eg. In the kitchen, around the boiler etc. As well as mouse shit look out for dirty, greasy marks around any gaps/holes. Use steel wool or wire mesh to plug the gaps. Constant vigilance is the only solution, or a cat. by mwprevention (Wed 9th Feb 2022 9:31pm)
  • Another vote for the old toll bar by mwprevention (Thu 31st Mar 2022 11:21am)
  • The Dockyard Social in finneston is very child friendly, lots of space etc. Also (in no particular order) The 78, Islay Inn, Cottiers, Sparkle Horse, Brewhaus, Cooper's have all proved very enjoyable/accommodating places to take the wee one. by mwprevention (Mon 30th May 2022 9:24pm)
  • I've often ended up working in Wetherspoons... don't support the company in any way...but it's open early, £1.25 for a cup of tea/coffee with free refills and I have absolutely no qualms about spending hours there hogging a table without buying anything else. Staff generally don't give a fuck either. Other places I'd feel compelled to buy something else after a while. by mwprevention (Sat 24th Sep 2022 9:26pm)
  • Coopers, the primary, the Smiddy. A lot of places will put something on for you if you ask by mwprevention (Sat 8th Oct 2022 5:51pm)
  • This isn't specific to Glasgow I think. Every so often something will happen that reminds you that a lot of people really aren't ok and that most have been through some level of individual and collective trauma over the last few years. Many people who live alone have experienced extreme loneliness. Many who live with others haven't had any personal space at all. Relationships/families have fallen apart, people have lost loved ones without saying goodbye, people are now fucking terrified they're not going to have enough cash to live on. Even people who seem to be doing ok are a lot more nervous/anxious because we all had to adjust and suppress many of our most basic and ingrained emotions and behaviours because we've been trying to avoid catching and transmitting a killer fucking virus. As well as not feeling ok themselves many are also picking up on the fact that a lot of other people aren't doing ok. Don't know what the solution is tbh...be kind, don't be too hard on yourself and others OP, maybe limit the time you spend doomscrolling the news and social media, focus on things you like doing and obviously fuck the Tories. by mwprevention (Sun 16th Oct 2022 8:25am)
  • In addition to the main ones KG/botanics/Pollock. Dawsholm park was an unexpected gem, the bit with the beech trees along the river is breathtaking and you feel miles away from the city, lots of different bits to it as well. Tollcross park, Rouken glen are also worth a look and everyone in/from Glasgow should make a trip to the viewpoint up at Cathkin Braes at least once, easily the best view of the city. For all that GSC get shit for (mostly justified) I've always found the city parks mostly clean, safe and add a huge amount of value to living here. by mwprevention (Sun 4th Dec 2022 1:50pm)
  • Absolutely not Glasgow but Bryna's Jamaican Kitchen in Falkirk is absolutely outstanding. More people should know about it. Had oxtail stew, jerk chicken and fried plantains the other day and it was dinamite. by mwprevention (Mon 25th Sep 2023 10:30am)
  • There's the big twisted hornbeam just up from the stewart fountain in KG park. The bark's worn smooth from thousands of kids (and adults) climbing on it over the years. Smoked joints in that tree when I was a student and climbed in it with my kids more recently. I really like that tree. Also the big fuck-off beech trees above the river in Dawsholm park are worth a visit. by mwprevention (Thu 28th Sep 2023 9:04pm)
