  • We call them half covered too... my girlfriends family say half coated, they’re weirdos! by nuromancy (Sat 6th Jun 2020 7:52pm)
  • I’ve dealt with something very similar recently (East end of Glasgow). There’s no time before which you can make a lot of noise, this is a myth. If the police are available they can send officers out at any time to give the guy a warning. If police aren’t available, they’d usually direct you to the anti-social team (not during lockdown, of course). They have the power to issue official warnings and seize equipment if they hear / witness the disturbance. This is when the different time periods come into play... During daytime hours more noise transmission to neighbouring properties is allowed and as the day progresses, the tolerance is less and less. This is covered by the Anti-Social Behaviour Act (2004) in Scotland. Permitted noise levels transmitted to your property from a neighbour are: 07:00-19:00 41dBA 19:00-23:00 37dBA 23:00-07:00 31dBA You can get a moderately accurate reading from a free app on your smart phone (there are many) to gauge what kind of level the noise is at. Worth noting that the point at which your employer must provide you with hearing protection is 85dbA - the acceptable levels here, as you can see, are much lower. Here’s a link to the relevant legislation: https://www.gov.scot/publications/antisocial-behaviour-etc-scotland-act-2004-guidance-noise-nuisance/pages/1/ While the police are your only option, it’s worthwhile phoning 111 even if officers can’t attend. As the call-out record will stand in your favour when dealing with the council at a later date. Best of luck! by nuromancy (Mon 8th Jun 2020 4:01am)
  • The big 3 northern cities will all serve you well and are similar to Glasgow in their own ways. If it’s the city itself you want to be similar then Liverpool is your best bet. I’d personally choose Newcastle for the people as they’re most similar to Glaswegians in their outlook. Manchester is great and has an amazing arts and culture scene if that’s what you’re into. by nuromancy (Thu 11th Jun 2020 12:25am)
  • Sorry, I chuckled! Missed the word “help” and couldn’t imagine a group meeting for the socially anxious! I’d suggest joining a local theatre group when lockdown is over. I found this a great way to get over my fear of public speaking, starting off with a non-speaking part but surrounded by supportive people. Then months of rehearsal before you perform. When you’ve been on stage you’ll get the bug and hopefully transition to more prominent speaking roles. Rinse and repeat with the process of support and rehearsal. May not be your thing but being in a theatre company gave me loads of confidence, which I completely lacked otherwise. by nuromancy (Fri 19th Jun 2020 7:53pm)
  • Cheers, I’ll do that! by nuromancy (Fri 19th Jun 2020 7:56pm)
  • Cheers for your reply... Do you think silencing groups like these does anything to disband them, or is it possible they’d amass greater numbers behind the scenes, not in full view of the moral majority? This could lead to its own problems... by nuromancy (Fri 19th Jun 2020 8:34pm)
  • Great question! I’m sure I’ll have a better answer when I give this some thought... Initially; violence against other groups, oppression of children are the first things that spring to mind. Actual crime I suppose, and I understand racist action is a crime. But is racist thought a crime, and should it be? This will really give me something to think about so thanks for your input. Where do you draw the line? by nuromancy (Fri 19th Jun 2020 8:32pm)
  • I don’t agree. You can be tolerant of ideas without supporting them; importantly, you can also be tolerant of ideas while rejecting obvious crimes against humanity. No sane person would support leniency for abusing children; they’re different conversations in my view. Thanks for your response! by nuromancy (Fri 19th Jun 2020 8:43pm)
  • Fair enough! Not my stance but I can understand why you think that. It’s the balaclavas and “Rule Britannia” that really gets the goat eh? by nuromancy (Fri 19th Jun 2020 8:41pm)
  • I agree with this. The orange marches should be one day, in a park or a field so the civic space isn’t disrupted. They can have their freedom of expression and the rest of us can get on with our lives. They are divisive, of course. If they pay their taxes then they’re as entitled to police protection as we are. Where would you draw the line? by nuromancy (Fri 19th Jun 2020 8:40pm)
  • I find it difficult to disagree with any of this. I certainly don’t want to see people shouting hatred in the streets. I’m trying to think about where the line is and how we allow people to express their views and maintain order civility. The answer isn’t clear to me and it’s such a loaded topic that civil discourse can often fan the flames! by nuromancy (Fri 19th Jun 2020 8:53pm)
  • Great points. I agree entirely about education, it’s the route away from being the oppressed or oppressor, full stop. I’ll definitely look more into getting rid of symbology as you mentioned. My only gripe is: who decides what counts as hate speech? In my mind, this depends on which side of the political spectrum you align with and can’t be quantified. I think America is in such a position because the sides won’t listen to one another, rather than the allowance of particular phrases. by nuromancy (Fri 19th Jun 2020 8:50pm)
  • If they pay tax then they have as much right as every other group who gathers en-masse. My lot (Indy rallies) included. Should it be rationed and reigned in a bit? Absolutely! Banned altogether? I’m not so sure that’s a good idea in a democratic society. by nuromancy (Fri 19th Jun 2020 8:58pm)
  • Same! I grew up along Paisley Road West and now live in the East End - can’t escape it! Saddest thing I’ve ever seen was a toddler in full battle fatigues, beret and high tops, with a mini snare drum strapped to him. That wee boy has no chance of being a decent person... by nuromancy (Fri 19th Jun 2020 8:56pm)
  • I can’t argue with this premise. No one wants Nazi Germany. Is it worth considering that the tactic of silencing certain groups might be the catalyst for a right-wing uprising? I’ve certainly also seen totalitarian displays from groups on the left in recent years, so who’s to say we won’t end up with Stalin instead of Hitler if we don’t allow a semblance of viewpoints? by nuromancy (Fri 19th Jun 2020 9:00pm)
  • I’d put my house on them not listening for a second... I still feel like a reasonable position is the best position to take, though. I can’t, in good conscience, say that I’d prefer civility and reasoned thought from my opponents and then throw my toys out the pram, so to speak. I don’t know what the answer to all of this is and I’d prefer if there were no loyalists and no orange walks. That’s not going to happen though, so how do we deal with it is the real question, I suppose. by nuromancy (Fri 19th Jun 2020 9:10pm)
  • I think you’re bang on with this. My cousins and some of my pals went to Catholic schools and it seems to alien to me. It’s well-documented that prejudices ingrained in childhood are hardest to shake - having our kids separated by faith is crazy and almost certainly fuels the fire. As children it might not be about religion, but it’s definitely about Rangers and Celtic and that’s where it starts for most... I was a Rangers fan growing up and stopped going to Ibrox as I didn’t want to listen to the hate and bile anymore. It would be great if football and religion weren’t so intertwined here but we’re a long way from that, sadly. Celtic have “Paradise” in giant letters across their stadium, for crying out loud. by nuromancy (Fri 19th Jun 2020 9:15pm)
  • The word “Paradise” is inherently religious. It’s what heaven is known as in the Catholic faith. by nuromancy (Sun 21st Jun 2020 4:48am)
  • I’d vote for the party with custard gun fights in their manifesto! by nuromancy (Sun 21st Jun 2020 4:53am)
  • I agree with you... I think Brian Cox says something like “You have a right to your ideas but we all also have a right to ridicule those ideas if they can be shown to stupid. Paraphrasing, of course! by nuromancy (Sun 21st Jun 2020 4:51am)
  • This quote is perfectly aligned with how I feel, thank you. Having looked into this a little, I can’t help but think Popper’s ideas where very of their time. He was a Jew in pre-war Germany during the Nazi reign, it would’ve been very obvious to him which ideals shouldn’t be tolerated. by nuromancy (Sun 21st Jun 2020 4:57am)
  • Awful company. They care more about having a cool office and staff drinks on a Friday than actually creating good products. The social media influencer in corporate-form, as far as I can tell... Elfingrove was an absolute disgrace - all arse and no trousers as the saying goes! by nuromancy (Wed 8th Jul 2020 12:08pm)
  • I’ve been a remote worker for 18 months and pre-pandemic I loved it. Things got tough when I had to juggle childcare with work, nursery closed and a rowdy three-year-old made for some interesting Teams meetings! I was eventually laid off during lockdown and didn’t speak to many people for a month or so. This week I’ve been out and about and having adult conversations in shops, with friends etc and although I didn’t recognise that I was feeling low, my mood has improved immeasurably. I only mention all this to make the point that as much as you may think you’re OK with working at home, human contact is so, so important and if I’m given the choice when I go back to work, I’ll want to spend at least half of my week in the office and interacting with the rest of the world. Getting up early and commuting is crap, but so isolation. by nuromancy (Tue 14th Jul 2020 9:25pm)
  • My friend is currently quarantining after returning home from Sweden. You’re allowed to leave your accommodation to buy groceries so you needn’t shop online at all. If you’re living anywhere within the city boundary there will definitely be a large supermarket close by. by nuromancy (Mon 20th Jul 2020 12:15pm)
  • I’ve ate and drank outside in Stockholm which is on the Baltic Sea and the bars and cafes provide blankets and patio heaters - it’s magic! The weather here should never be a barrier to development of the riverside... by nuromancy (Wed 22nd Jul 2020 12:33pm)
  • The guy sounds like a total ringpiece but that “letter” is the most vomit-inducing thing I’ve ever read. Wtf is a safer spaces policy?! And Womxn? Sheesh.... by nuromancy (Tue 4th Aug 2020 6:02am)

  • To be fair, a few of the main vaccines do have fetal cells (usually from elected terminations) as an ingredient as human cells are needed to grow the virus in. This is the sort of thing that sounds a bit weird and to those who don’t understand its purpose is perfect for conspiracies to abound. That’s the thing I find about conspiracies, they usually start with a small element of truth that gets blown out of proportion and warped to make it seem like some kind of evil... by nuromancy (Sat 19th Sep 2020 12:50am)
  • I seem to remember this being a cafe called The Cottage in the late 80s, early 90s. I used to get a gammon steak with a pineapple ring and chips when I was wee... I’m sure it was in that building but could be a false memory! by nuromancy (Thu 15th Oct 2020 5:22pm)
  • Pollok Park, or Pollok Estate as we used to call it, is a haven in the city. I grew up in Corkerhill before the M77 extension was built and as a kid I’d walk from my house to the park, via the golf course. I loved it! I’ve long since moved away from Hardridge Road and I took my son (who’s 3) to Pollok House last summer. Had instant nostalgia and tried to get him to run under the wee tunnel in the bridge... he wouldn’t! Fearty! Great picture, thanks for the memories... by nuromancy (Sat 17th Oct 2020 7:05pm)

  • Don’t the agency you’re working provide transport? I’ve worked at the Dunfermline FC before and there were busses laid on from all Glasgow and Edinburgh. Would be worthwhile checking out... by nuromancy (Tue 17th Nov 2020 11:50am)
  • I’m in the East end and have noticed a distinct taste and smell of chlorine from the tap water for a few weeks now. I know it’s harmless but it tastes awful and has put me off drinking it. by nuromancy (Sun 22nd Nov 2020 10:26pm)
  • I drove past a bad accident on Edinburgh Road at about 18:15, there must’ve been 20 police cars (no exaggeration) 2 fire engines and several ambulances - police chopper was flying overhead then. The crash looked awful, one car upside down and completely flattened at the bottom of a grass verge, was probably unsurvivable. by nuromancy (Sun 28th Feb 2021 1:11am)

  • Celino’s on Alexandra Parade does banana and Nutella French toast. You can feel yourself getting diabetes as you eat but it’s glorious! If you’re more westerly, Celino’s has a second restaurant in Patrick (Argyle st / Dumbarton road region I think) so would be worth checking their menu too. by nuromancy (Fri 4th Jun 2021 3:22am)

  • If you call the vaccine helpline on 0800 030 8013 (08:00 - 20:00), they can make a new record for you (since you won’t have a CHI number) abs book an appointment for your first dose. You won’t be able to book online as you won’t be on the system. by nuromancy (Fri 11th Jun 2021 8:51pm)
  • A seat on the Caledonian Sleeper is £65 I believe. Not dirt cheap but better than the day fair on a train and comfier than the mega bus! by nuromancy (Thu 24th Jun 2021 4:11pm)
  • Contrary to popular belief, the time of day doesn’t matter in relation to nuisance noise. If the noise can be measured from your property at 34dBA (or 10dBA above the background noise, whichever is higher) then the person making the noise is breaking the law. If they don’t desist when asked they could be issued with a fixed penalty notice and have their equipment seized. If the noise is having an effect on your quality of life then it’s irrelevant if it’s at 8am or 11pm. You should make a complaint to GCC via their website. by nuromancy (Sun 27th Jun 2021 4:52pm)
  • They’re putting communal food waste bins on the street?! What an absolutely appalling idea! I vote SNP and was a member at one point in time, but at a local level they’ve been atrocious. Glasgow City council is a complete farce and if this is true it’s just another thing on the list of stupid ideas... I’ll seriously consider other parties at the next local election. by nuromancy (Mon 28th Jun 2021 1:17am)
  • Call 0800 030 8013 and they’ll make you an appointment over the phone. by nuromancy (Mon 28th Jun 2021 1:20am)
  • Sorry you were told that, the person has given you wrong information. I actually worked on that helpline for a short spell... There’s a registration department, which you can be transferred to, and they will make you a CHI number and get you on the system. They’ll then book your first appointment. I’d call back and the registration line is probably an option on the IVR, if not then ask to be transferred through. by nuromancy (Mon 28th Jun 2021 4:57pm)
  • I grew up in Pollok and Cardonald so saw my fair share of bams as a teenager and I was pretty scared to walk about at night a lot of the time - I’m nearly 40 now and through my adult years I’ve felt that the city has got a lot safer; ned culture seems to have all but vanished, the city centre has become more cosmopolitan and immigration has made Glasgow more of a melting pot. Since lockdown began it feels like we’re back at square one. With most people staying at home, only the most downtrodden have been hanging about the town, and without the usual crowds to blend into they stick out. Maybe the neds never went away but were just hidden well by the rest of the city... Social problems are largely a result of deprivation and Glasgow’s definitely less deprived than it used to be, but maybe the pandemic has shone a light on those who’re still caught up in that cycle. by nuromancy (Thu 1st Jul 2021 11:17pm)
  • I’m not even sure what to say about this... Sickening! Glasgow was infamous for knife crime and gang culture in the 70s, I hope we’re not heading back there. But then again, could be an isolated incident so I’ll try not to be too reactionary. by nuromancy (Fri 2nd Jul 2021 10:55pm)
  • If you get a bad blister on day one, your holiday is over! Look after your feet, make sure your boots fit properly and are broken in. Wear high-wicking socks (not cotton sports socks) and change your socks when you feel your feet are really sweaty. Take compeed and Elastoplast with you! by nuromancy (Wed 7th Jul 2021 6:50pm)
  • There may be some very few exceptions but Argos is a “catalogue shop” and they don’t really have items on display. You might find smaller electricals and things behind the cash desk but nothing big like bedroom furniture. That’s basically their USP, they can stock absolutely everything because they use all their space for warehousing and don’t have a shop floor as such. If you want to see what you’re buying, IKEA is a better option. by nuromancy (Tue 13th Jul 2021 9:59pm)
  • I’d say that’s very unlikely... the items will just be taken from the warehouse and onto a van, delivered flat-packed. Perhaps if you Google it you’ll find a third-party service that would build the stuff for you, but in all honesty, I wouldn’t worry too much about it. Flat-pack furniture is designed to be as easy as possible and comes with instructions, millions of people do it. We’ve all felt that anxiety of moving home and having to get everything built, unless you have any physical impairments then I’m sure you’ll be absolutely fine. Just get a friend round to help on delivery day! by nuromancy (Tue 13th Jul 2021 10:17pm)
  • This isn’t true at all... There are camping management zones, for which you need a permit between March and September. It’s not illegal to camp anywhere in Scotland due to the Scottish Outdoor Access code, providing you follow the code and are sensible. Rangers won’t move you on if you’re behaving and not setting fire to felled logs or leaving your rubbish lying around. by nuromancy (Thu 15th Jul 2021 9:43pm)

  • Everywhere is within driving distance if you have the time... How far are you willing to drive? Within Trossachs National Park, you’ll need a permit to camp on all of the good places: https://www.lochlomond-trossachs.org/things-to-do/camping/get-a-permit/ You can venture a bit further west and head to Glen Etive... Google maps is your friend here, but it’s basically a left turn off the A82, just before Glencoe Ski centre. Glen Etive is one of my favourite spots but it has been littered heavily in recent years and the locals are campaigning for by-laws, similar to those in the park, to prevent wild camping, so please be respectful and leave no trace if you go there (or anywhere for that matter!) If you stay within the park then I’d recommend Loch Chon, Loch Lubnaig, and Loch Venachar. by nuromancy (Wed 21st Jul 2021 7:13pm)
  • If it was a floor or ceiling issue it would be a bit easier but in all honesty, there’s really nothing you can do about transmission through a wall, other than building a separate wall with an air gap. Even then, it would only help a bit and wouldn’t stop the noise entirely. If you’ve got money to spare then perhaps that might be an option for you but I fear you’ll end up spending a fortune with little to no reward. I’m in the same boat in my flat, the bedroom walls are paper thin, so I feel your pain! I’m not an acoustician so I’m happy to be corrected but I am an audio engineer so have some knowledge of this subject. by nuromancy (Tue 3rd Aug 2021 10:25am)
  • Interesting video... this might be what OP is after but it’s definitely NOT soundproofing - the guy in the video is using the word incorrectly. Nothing there is decoupled from the source so high frequencies will be probably be attenuated but sound will definitely still transfer at high enough levels and low enough frequencies. by nuromancy (Tue 3rd Aug 2021 7:43pm)
  • I’ve been wondering the same thing... I’m all for personal responsibility and the people who make the mess should be held accountable, but what the fuck are the council actually doing about it? It’s the complete apathy from GCC that really gets my goat. There are currently three shopping trolleys and an upended clothing donation bin on my street, as well litter and dog shit every five paces (and the entire east end is like this). The inaction from the council has really turned me against them. by nuromancy (Sun 8th Aug 2021 6:53pm)
  • Edinburgh woollen mill inside the St Enoch centre had some beautiful Harris tweed jackets last time I was in, not sure if the shop is still there as I haven’t been in town for a long time. Expect to pay £250 - £300 for a blazer style jacket by nuromancy (Wed 25th Aug 2021 1:40pm)
  • Where in Glasgow are you? There are Sparrowhawks that nest in Dawsholm park and they can seem huge in the city landscape. One flew past me when I was walking my dog a few years back and it frightened the shite out of me! They’ve been seen on the south side too as they fly across the river to the Govan / Braehead area. by nuromancy (Tue 31st Aug 2021 8:39pm)
  • Once had a bouncer at the polo call me a poof as I walked in the door… I’m straight and was with straight friends, polo was just a good night out back in the day! He was obviously a closeted steroid freak who got his jollies abusing patrons at a gay bar! by nuromancy (Fri 3rd Sep 2021 9:22am)
  • Congratulations on fatherhood! My wee guy is 4 and I went through all the same questions when he started nursery (at 9 months). You should expect the odd photo and video but in all honesty, if the staff spend a lot of their time taking photos and videos of each child in their care then I’d be worried that other things were being neglected. I know it’s tough to be away from your kid all day but it’ll get easier. As long as they update you at the end of each day with anything you need to know, how many nappy changes and what they had to eat etc, then anything else is a bonus. You’ll find that as he gets older and starts to work through the learning curriculum, you’ll get more frequent updates; our nursery has an online portal where they post photos of the kids doing activities, learning about colours and numbers, that sort of thing. by nuromancy (Wed 22nd Sep 2021 9:18pm)

My partner booked the two of us and our son, who’s 4.5, at the one near Dalmarnock and he was a greeting-faced wee bam who wouldn’t go on anything, but I had a fucking ball!!! It’s genuinely the most fun you can have with your clothes on and I’m considering leaving my moany wee botton of a boy with my mum and having a jump about myself… Definitely date material as you can get a good slagging in about how shite each other was… by nuromancy (Fri 5th Nov 2021 12:41am)
  • This is good advice… the thing I worry about is that I’m approaching 40 and I hope I’m not too out of touch. I spoke with him on the phone earlier and he was with friends so that’s good. I think I’ll keep in touch and check in once or twice a week just to keep a presence but not smother him. It’s mad the things you’re thrust into without warning eh? That boy could’ve spoken to any number of people tonight but he spoke to me, so now I’m involved and I want to make sure he’s ok, somehow. by nuromancy (Fri 5th Nov 2021 3:25am)

  • I’ve dealt with a nuisance neighbour before, it’s a nightmare and I sympathise. Every time it happens, no matter how loud or quiet, duration, time of day, that’s all irrelevant- call 101 and report a noise complaint. The police won’t always come out but they will always keep a record of your call and pass that on to the council (and your HA if you’re the from one). You should also keep a diary of incidents, no matter how small. Beyond a certain time of night, the police will instruct you to call the council noise team, who’ll then visit your property. It’s discreet, they’re plain clothed and drive unmarked cars. The issue is that the noise has to be happening when they’re there for them to officially record it. Anyway, all of this is building a case for the council nuisance noise team to apply for an asbo against your neighbour. In my experience, the letters from the council and the threat of action will be enough to make them stop - nobody wants that hassle. The other thing to consider - maybe the noise from your flat really is a nuisance to them. Do you have wood or laminate floors? Even with concrete between floors, unless everything is completely decoupled, sound will find a way to transmit, and although you’re not doing anything other than living your life, you might actually be doing their melt in. I’m a sound engineer and know the pain of trying to stop noise from moving between rooms - it’s very, very difficult. You’ve said they’re not the easiest to deal with but maybe it’s worth trying to find a way to talk to them, drop them a letter and ask them to meet - maybe you can come to an amicable agreement like taking your shoes off at certain times, etc. Best of luck! by nuromancy (Tue 7th Dec 2021 11:49pm)

  • Fair dos! The neighbour does seem mental, but you never know… maybe they can’t get enough shut eye and they’re pissed off. May also be a total maniac so OP please take that advice in the spirit it was intended, very much at your own risk! 😆 by nuromancy (Wed 8th Dec 2021 12:01am)
  • I’d ask if the only thing that bothers you is the commute time? There will be trade-offs, so if you’re otherwise happy then moving closer to the city may not be the best idea. All of the places you’ve mentioned have less-than great reputations. Like everywhere, they have good and bad spots, Paisley is mostly bad with a few not-so-bad areas, I’d avoid East Kilbride like the plague if I were you. I live in a rough part of Glasgow’s East end and was brought up in an even rougher bit of the south side so I’m not saying this to be snobby about it. If you can afford it and want to move closer to work then you should consider moving inside the Glasgow boundary to one of the suburbs. Glasgow is rough in a lot of places but suburban areas like Mosspark, Cardonald, Knightswood, Riddrie (to some extent) and various others, will offer the same bang for your buck as the commuter towns but you’re closer to the city and life will verbally be pretty quiet and uneventful. • Seconded. The gantry in the old toll is listed as it’s one of, if not the, oldest in the city. by nuromancy (Thu 20th Jan 2022 11:16pm)
  • My all time favourite: “can anyone recommend a barber for medium length hair?” That’s just a barber mate… fucking hell! by nuromancy (Mon 28th Mar 2022 10:53am)
  • Pretavoir.co.uk - which is the online arm of i2i opticians… biggest selection of designer eyewear in Europe at the best prices. I know this sounds like an ad, I used to work there a long time ago but don’t now. I wear glasses myself and still shop there as the value and customer service are excellent. by nuromancy (Fri 22nd Apr 2022 12:55pm)
  • Went there for the first time last week with my 4 year old. Wasn’t sure what to expect and was pleasantly surprised. Great place to encourage being active instead of just the usual swings and a chute. by nuromancy (Sat 30th Apr 2022 6:47pm)

  • Middle-class teenagers and young adults appropriate certain icons of the working class in a vain attempt at appearing more Glaswegian than they are, but it’s transparent and cringey as all hell. I was at a Marc Rebillet gig recently and chants of “here we fucking go” and a bottle of Bucky being passed to the performer were so contrived I almost threw up. Poverty tourists, the lot of them. by nuromancy (Wed 17th Aug 2022 3:51pm)
  • Second this… the drive between Pitlochry and Kinloch Rannoch via Loch Tummel and the Queen’s view is one of the most spectacular autumn colour shows I’ve ever seen. Probably 10-15 miles out from Pitlochry so not a long drive at all, but there are so many trees that when they turn it’s incredible. Our very own New England I’d say. I was there in the first week of October but these things are hard to predict. by nuromancy (Tue 13th Sep 2022 5:43pm)
