  • Gutted I didn’t see that! by Desmodusrotundus (Sat 11th Jan 2020 8:48pm)
  • Likewise! I’m around Hyndland. Anyone seeing this that needs out, give me a bell. Do any of you use Nextdoor? I think there’s probably a fair few older folk that are high risk that might see stuff on Nextdoor but not reddit. by Desmodusrotundus (Fri 13th Mar 2020 6:51pm)
  • Thanks! Yeah I tried to book online but nothing came up. Ive just had another look on my desktop and it’s working now. Thanks so much for getting back to me! by Desmodusrotundus (Fri 20th Mar 2020 10:48am)
  • Yeah it does seem strange that we don’t have that. My guess would be lack of demand. I think there’s probably a pretty heavy skew in the number of donations each person has given, I.e. people have either donated many times or not at all by Desmodusrotundus (Fri 20th Mar 2020 5:06pm)
  • That’s amazing that they got in touch of you directly. And great that you managed to help out! by Desmodusrotundus (Fri 20th Mar 2020 7:19pm)
  • Oh interesting, I guess you would know better than me because you have a rare type but I always thought they did targeted drives for rare types by Desmodusrotundus (Fri 20th Mar 2020 7:50pm)
  • Yeah! I headed down today just to check the place out. Still open for now, but there are no walk in appointments. Full until the 31st March which is great news! by Desmodusrotundus (Sat 21st Mar 2020 3:01pm)
  • If you’re going to be relocating to a different country and spending most of your time speaking a language that isn’t your mother tongue, it’s inevitable that you’ll meet some (or many) people with a regional accent that you don’t understand. That said, you’re clearly already fluent enough to understand someone from around here. In comparison to all of the work you will have put in to learning another language, getting familiar with the accent up here will be easy for you! Plus, as others have said, Glasgow is really cosmopolitan. You’ll meet folk from the city, highlands, Ayrshire, greater Glasgow, Edinburgh etc. All the accents are different! As for whether you’ll be welcomed here - Glaswegians are some of the most welcoming folk I’ve met. I, like you’re planning to, worked in a restaurant in the west end when I moved up here and not only did I work with people from all over the world, but all of the Scottish folk I worked with were ace. They’ll be happy to have you and I’d be amazed if anyone would consider you being danish an issue. by Desmodusrotundus (Sun 5th Apr 2020 12:38am)
  • This is exactly what I planned to do this evening only to kind the wild garlic in kelvingrove has been strimmed since I last went by Desmodusrotundus (Thu 7th May 2020 10:48pm)
  • Hey! A question for you because it seems like you might know the answer! I headed to kelvingrove to pick some today but noticed that much of what had been there has been strimmed, and a lot of what’s left is limp and yellow. I didn’t end up picking any because I thought it might be yellow because it had been sprayed with something but your comment makes me think it might just be because it’s near the end of the season. What do you think? Know of any other plants that can be foraged around Glasgow? by Desmodusrotundus (Thu 7th May 2020 10:51pm)
  • These are great tips! Thanks! I’d noticed that the nettles are looking especially lush right now and wondered if it was a good time to pick them. Also elderflowers! Ahh! Cant wait to get my hands on some. by Desmodusrotundus (Sat 9th May 2020 9:56am)
  • Yeah there’s still some there but not as many as there has been in previous weeks. by Desmodusrotundus (Sat 9th May 2020 9:55am)
  • I’ve seen this place on Byres road actually! That’s a great recommendation and is also very close to me, I’ll check them out. Thanks for your reply! by Desmodusrotundus (Wed 17th Jun 2020 9:54am)
  • That’s great! What a great initiative. I’ll make sure to check it out. Thank you! by Desmodusrotundus (Wed 17th Jun 2020 9:55am)
  • Wow! What a comprehensive list - gives me plenty to go through. This is exactly what I was hoping to find - Thanks for putting this together! by Desmodusrotundus (Wed 17th Jun 2020 10:34am)
  • I’m sorry you had that experience but it’s also really great that you were there to help as much as you could. A similar thing happened to me a few years ago. I felt quite helpless at the time which drove me to volunteer with a first aid organisation. If you’re interested I’d urge you to join! by Desmodusrotundus (Fri 17th Jul 2020 8:37pm)
  • I’d be more than happy to spend some time cleaning up around my local area but it’s stuff like that that makes me feel like there’d be no point by Desmodusrotundus (Sun 7th Mar 2021 9:18am)
  • I thought this too but it was on a main road, outside a church. by Desmodusrotundus (Sun 7th Mar 2021 9:17am)
  • What has your experience been like with all dog rescue Scotland? There are quite a few different organisations that rehome stray dogs from Romania that look great but I’ve read elsewhere not to use these organisations that transport strays from Europe over concerns for vaccinations / transporting pups for profit. I’m not criticising at all by the way, I’m genuinely curious by Desmodusrotundus (Tue 16th Mar 2021 7:09am)
  • We’ve just sanded the floors in our place. We did about 40sq m over 3 days. Rental cost us ~£100 for the floor sander and edge sander, plus another £50 or so on sanding sheets and then ~£80 for varnish. It’s definitely worked out cheaper than it would have been to get someone in but it’s hard work, and ended up with a rougher finish than we would have got if someone had come in. But we’re really happy with it! Happy to show you photos or answer any questions by Desmodusrotundus (Tue 30th Mar 2021 12:34pm)
  • Honestly it was a bit chaotic. We started going diagonally, then with the grain, but then had to go diagonal again in places that were a bit tougher to sand. Going diagonal definitely helped with making the boards more level, but it ripped up the sanding sheets more than going with the grain. The sandpaper ripping ended up being the biggest pain in the arse of the whole job because when it rips, it more or less explodes and you have to switch off the machine, take it all out and screw a new one in place, which takes about 5 minutes. Doesn’t seem like long but it adds up. by Desmodusrotundus (Tue 30th Mar 2021 1:21pm)
  • Interesting! I’m in a tenement and can’t find much information about his work on tenements. Can you recommend anywhere to look? by Desmodusrotundus (Thu 1st Apr 2021 12:54pm)
  • Yeah I’m wondering whether this is more likely. We appreciate the history but unfortunately it is just extremely dark in a part of the house that doesn’t get much light already anyway. Any recommendations on how we could preserve it? by Desmodusrotundus (Thu 1st Apr 2021 12:55pm)
  • Interesting you had it too! The plaster is also damaged and cracked a fair few places for ours too by Desmodusrotundus (Thu 1st Apr 2021 1:09pm)
  • Did you paint/plaster over? by Desmodusrotundus (Thu 1st Apr 2021 1:09pm)
  • Yeah! I wouldn’t be surprised if it has been varnished. The hot air stripper didn’t affect it at all by Desmodusrotundus (Thu 1st Apr 2021 1:08pm)
  • Oops! by Desmodusrotundus (Thu 1st Apr 2021 1:54pm)

  • No way! That's so interesting! Thanks so much for commenting by Desmodusrotundus (Thu 1st Apr 2021 5:20pm)
  • Thanks! Yeah a few people have said the same so I think I’ll get in contact with them. by Desmodusrotundus (Fri 2nd Apr 2021 7:42am)
  • Thanks so much for your reply! What you said is really useful, and that’s good to get an informed opinion! Most of what we’ve uncovered so far is in a fair condition. Some holes and cracks but actually much better than some of the other rooms in the house were. At this point most of the time we’ve spent renovating our place has been doing plastering! Nothing like the job that would be done by a professional, but we’ve got a good finish with some hard work. Sounds like it might be hard to get the plaster to stick to varnish though - is that what you’re saying? We’re considering patching and skimming the cracks, and then repainting the pattern in more muted colours. Does that sound to you like it would be ruining it? by Desmodusrotundus (Fri 2nd Apr 2021 7:42am)
  • Depending on the state of the wall we used Easy Fill then gypsum plaster- a rougher grey one followed by a smoother pink/brown finishing one. But we’ve recently switched to using a premixed finishing plaster rather than the bags of powder because it’s easier to get it smooth. Thanks! I’ve actually loved learning to do it. Much more enjoyable than stripping paint from woodwork. Ok that’s good to know that less invasive is better. To be honest, we’ve got lots of other original features- lots of mad cornicing and ceiling roses (we even found old shutters in one room and a blocked up fireplace in another). So unless the pattern in the hallway is Greek Thompson (which is isn’t) I’m not sure it’s worth conserving the way it is at the moment just because it’s far too dark for what we’re looking for. Someone else mentioned needing to use febond blue grit - I’ll look into it! Thanks. I’m totally up for repainting it and I’m quite confident that we could get it to look quite good but it would have to be more of an ‘homage’ to what is there now. If there’s anything else that you think is worth keeping an eye out for, I’d love to know! Thanks for your advice, it’s really helpful by Desmodusrotundus (Fri 2nd Apr 2021 8:37am)
  • If you like shawarma king, try BBQ wrap salad in partick. The wings are the best I’ve had, and if you get the shawarma meal for two they send the chicken, salad, bread and sauce separate so you can put it together however you want. Hands down best in Glasgow I’ve had so far by Desmodusrotundus (Sat 10th Apr 2021 9:41am)
  • Yeah pretty much the same for us. House was bogging when we moved in, loads of rubbish and furniture we had been left to clear. Previous owners also didn’t give us the code to the house alarm so it was going off for hours before an electrician could disconnect it. The home report also said the boiler was fine but it clearly wasn’t working when we arrived. I wouldn’t even bother trying to get your solicitor to get them to cough up. Ours tried but evidently all they need to do is refuse and say that you’ve got to take them to small claims court if you want them to reimburse you, which of course most people wouldn’t bother with. After the boiler issue we decided to get the place checked out by an electrician (surely what the home report is for but clearly they’re a formality more than anything else) who told us the whole place needed rewired because the place was filled with frayed and burnt wires. On top of that our neighbours don’t give a shit about the close, the garden or the bins. And you can smell the butchers downstairs, and hear the refrigerator fan from one of the bedrooms. All things we had no idea about going in so I was feeling the same as you at the start. A lot of these things haven’t changed but I do love living here now and don’t regret the decision to get a tenement. It’s a ballache you’ve got to do a lot of work but try to remind yourself that you’re putting elbow grease in to something that’s yours. by Desmodusrotundus (Wed 5th May 2021 12:00pm)
  • A neighbour spotted the immigration officers van and spread the word to others living locally on Facebook and WhatsApp groups. Went from a couple to hundreds over the space of a couple of hours with folk willing to stay there as long as it took for them to be released. by Desmodusrotundus (Thu 13th May 2021 10:31pm)
  • Yeah I agree with this. My understanding was that they were acting independently of the immigration officers and were there to control the crowds. There were SO MANY police there which seemed excessive but I wondered whether there’s some sort of policy to have x number of police per x protesters? Also, the crowd were peaceful but given how some other recent peaceful protests have ended differently to how they started, I wouldn’t be surprised if that many were there in case things did turn sour. It’s a residential area, with lots of kids and schools about. While the police weren’t necessary, in this case I think it was ok and I didn’t see any nastyness from any side. by Desmodusrotundus (Fri 14th May 2021 1:36pm)

  • I wrote the majority of my thesis in Wetherspoons. Cheap, open early, usually dead in the day, and staff don’t care at all if you’re buying things or not. Quite a lot of them are also really nice on the inside! by Desmodusrotundus (Sat 7th Aug 2021 12:08pm)

  • I’ve seen her too! Around this time last year I’d see someone dressed as a chicken (the disco chicken) who would play music and dance with anyone who fancied it. I’ve assumed the lemon and the chicken are the same person. Always makes me happy to see her by Desmodusrotundus (Tue 5th Apr 2022 3:28am)
  • Yeah the signage and decoration made me overlook it for ages but it’s really fucking decent. Plus everyone working there always seems to be having a good laugh. Agree with u/professional_cow2128 that their salads are great but less so the sauces. by Desmodusrotundus (Sat 9th Apr 2022 6:41am)
  • Yeah I agree with everyone else not to disclose you’re a student. Alternatively, you could use spareroom.co.uk if you and your partner don’t mind sharing with other people. I’m not sure whether things have changed since I last used it but a few years ago at least it just was assumed that it would be mostly students using it. I would still just try not to say you’re a student if you can avoid it. Plus might be a good option if you’re looking for a short term let because it’s often used by people who are trying to find someone to complete their contract because they’re also going away on placement. by Desmodusrotundus (Mon 11th Apr 2022 10:09am)
  • We got a 3 bed place in pollokshields for about £6k under home report because it needed work, had been on the market for a while, and is in a less desirable part of southside. We’ve ended up paying less for a 3 bed than people pay for 1 or 2 bed places just a 10 minute walk away. We never would have been able to compete with folk paying over the home report but I feel like we’ve ended up with something better now. by Desmodusrotundus (Thu 14th Apr 2022 6:51am)

  • Before the pandemic I went a few times mid week after 8pm and there was only standing room which is less enjoyable for me. Sometimes there would be up the back on the stool seats but as a short person, I found them difficult to sit on comfortably for the length of the show. Personally I think the best approach is to head for 19.30-19.45 so you can get a seat where you like. Plus bonus, you can support the stand by getting a few more drinks in you. by Desmodusrotundus (Tue 10th May 2022 7:13pm)
  • Pluricentric is a nice way to put it! I would second not being close to central station though. West end would be good for bartending but kind of expensive. Partick would be a more affordable option though. Southside is also an alright option for bartending and seems to be popular with the late 20s ish crowd. I feel like west end might be more of a division between students and mid 30s+? Just a hunch! by Desmodusrotundus (Thu 12th May 2022 9:17am)
  • What does this even mean? by Desmodusrotundus (Tue 17th May 2022 8:39am)
  • Fyi, seems like it’s pretty difficult to find a place right now. There are limited places and seems like landlords are being picky. I could be wrong but that’s the impression I get from posts on Reddit and Facebook. Check out spareroom.co.uk to help you find a place & housemates Personally I would look for somewhere around Cessnock, Eglington Toll or Tradeston. These are all walking distance from Clyde Place and would be cheaper than a lot of other areas. It’s also close to shawlands and strathbungo which have a lot of bars, restaurants etc, but are popular areas that might be hard to find a place in right now. Clyde place is close to the subway so that also opens you up to anywhere along the subway route. Partick is close to bars / restaurants / nice outdoor spots, but can be expensive depending on where you look. I would avoid anywhere in town centre (around Buchanan street subway station) because it will be more enjoyable for you to live outside of the centre. Places around Hillhead & Kelvinbridge subway stops will likely be too expensive for you. Lots of people told me to avoid Govan when I first moved here. I can’t comment on that because I have no experience of it myself, but would personally avoid Govan and Ibrox just because of proximity to the football stadium. Best of luck! by Desmodusrotundus (Mon 6th Jun 2022 8:12am)

  • I’ve just started selling paintings and illustrations I’ve made over the years. I’m selling prints but would be happy to sell originals I still have! You can find me @bambelli_art on Instagram … Or! Come along to paintings on railings at Glasgow Botanic Gardens during the day this weekend. I’ll be there as well as a bunch of other local artists. Pretty sure it’ll be both Saturday and Sunday if the weather is ok. On Saturday evening I’ll also be at the night flea market at the sikorski polish club from 6 onwards. I’ve not been to this market before but I think there will be other people selling artwork too. There’s more info @nightfleamarket_glasgow by Desmodusrotundus (Thu 9th Jun 2022 7:59am)

  • Aw, that would be great! I have no idea how difficult something like that is to set up but I hope you get a chance to do that someday. I’m certain there would be a lot of people in glasgow who would be interested in trying polish food. • Agreed! Failing that Mother India (the ‘mother’ restaurant) just down the road is also magnificent! First time I went I rolled my eyes when my boyfriend ordered a butter chicken, thinking he should go for something less familiar on the menu, but the motherfucker knew what he was doing. • Why did you get downvoted? That’s the right answer by Desmodusrotundus (Sun 26th Jun 2022 5:57pm)
  • Yeah, I’ve never got why it’s a thing. I’ve worked in kitchens, waiting, healthcare, retail - the lot. All have been minimum wage, bad hours, weekend work, yet tips were only a thing for waitressing despite literally having shit on my hands on the regs as a health care worker. Don’t get me wrong, receiving tips was great and I will continue to tip for good service in restaurants, but it boggles the mind that it’s the custom to tip wait staff and yet the cleansing workers who take away our rubbish will only get tipped at Christmas (if at all). by Desmodusrotundus (Mon 27th Jun 2022 9:54am)
  • True, but what about this logic with health care staff? by Desmodusrotundus (Mon 27th Jun 2022 10:38am)
  • I was more trying to make a point about your previous comment that retail and supermarket working experiences aren’t comparable with waiting staff. It was suggesting that the challenges of waiting on tables deserved tips, so I was asking about health care because it’s another challenging job that doesn’t get tipped. It wasn’t a “what about what about” argument, more than tipping culture in general is bizarre and not related to the difficulty of the job. by Desmodusrotundus (Mon 27th Jun 2022 5:39pm)
  • I imagine there will be lots of people with the same idea, but there are lots of free parking around Dumbreck which would give you good access to the M8 and easy walking distance to bellahouston. If you go along St Andrew’s Drive just along from dumbreck you’re bound to find a space even if it’s busy by Desmodusrotundus (Wed 29th Jun 2022 10:19am)

  • Why are people downvoting this? If people start heading to Killie and it starts to see a little development then that could be a small upside of all of this housing bubble nonsense. The train journey is pretty quick when they’re running, and it’s also a good distance to beaches & green areas. • Couldn’t agree with this more. I would be really keen to read a local newspaper if it helped me understand what’s going on in my local community, whether it’s events, projects or things that have happened. Seems like at the moment there aren’t many options besides newspapers that, as OP says, use emotive language for divisive stories to drive sales or interest. The news doesn’t need to be positive all the time, sometimes it just isn’t. But it would be great if it could help me feel more connected to what is going on around me. I’d be particularly interested in longer investigative type stories versus surface level reporting! by Desmodusrotundus (Thu 7th Jul 2022 3:07pm)

When I’ve used them before, I’ve put them on right after and then not needed to think about them for a few days and then there’s no scabbing at all when I’ve taken them off. I am very very bad for picking scabs so it just helps to remove the temptation to mess with it by Desmodusrotundus (Thu 29th Sep 2022 11:55am)
  • It’s definitely a new thing. I’ve only used it on two before, but the ones I got prior to that (over 6 years ago) were just a case of liberal bepanthen and cling film. I’ve definitely noticed better / more comfortable healing with the film, especially with large sections of solid colour or black. And you’re in a good place if you do get around to it! • That sounds about right to me too. I paid £1,000 for two full days that was 10 hours of actual tattooing time, for a custom design with an artist that has a long wait list. • Hey! I got mine of eBay, it travelled well and has made some great brews but it took a while to get up and running. I have a scoby you’re more that welcome to but here’s the thing: a couple of months ago I noticed that fruit flies had laid eggs on the scoby, and there were a couple maggots on it. They were very small but a maggot is a maggot I guess. From r/kombucha, there was mixed info although it generally seemed that those who were telling me to chuck the whole thing out were mostly due to revulsion than anything else. The larvae can’t survive submerged in liquid so I’m quite confident that the brew itself is fine. I sliced off the top of the pelicule (the scoby), washed it, and restarted the brew. It’s now brewing fine, and tastes fine, but I understand that many people would find that revolting. So, yes you’re more that welcome to some of mine, but thought it would be polite to give you information about its history so you can make an informed decision yourself! Otherwise, give eBay a go or try asking in your local groups on facebook by Desmodusrotundus (Wed 12th Oct 2022 11:01am)

  • Our close door slammed a lot. First floor, could hear it all the time. To stop it doing that, we adjusted the tension on the mechanism at the top that makes it swing back. If you’re having the same problem as we did, you just need to adjust it so that it swings back a bit slower. Crabshakk at the Botanics is a great seafood place although I’m not sure how it compares to what you have where you’re from. Fairly pricy but we did well getting lots of things to share. A cheaper one on the west end is Hanoi Bike Shop. Dependably good food and nice atmosphere. Lobo in southside specialises in small sharing plates. • When we moved into our flat almost 3 years ago the back court was so overgrown you couldn’t even walk up to the bin shed. Turns out it hadn’t been used or tended to in well over 30 years (as we could tell from neighbours who spoke to us afterwards and the dates on the rubbish we found). It took a solid few weekends of hacking away at the brambles to begin to see the ground. Then multiple weekends of digging up brambles, burning & putting bramble specific poison on the ground. They somehow haven’t come back at all since we did that, which is a surprise! It was a huge amount of work, only really possible thanks to some help from friends and family. Be ready to find a lot a lot a lot of rubbish in and amongst the dirt. I was really optimistic at first because lots of neighbours showed interest in what we were doing. Seemed like we were going to get a good community effort going, but have felt quite dejected since because at least half of the people that use the court continue to use it as a dumping ground. That said, people regularly hang their washing out there now and take their kids out to play. It’s lovely to see. We’ve not done anything to it since except for trim the grass, probably more so because I’m not sure what to do next! So it will be good to hear what suggestions people have here. I’ll see if I can find some photos by Desmodusrotundus (Mon 5th Jun 2023 10:33am)

  • I really appreciate seeing this perspective! I follow a Facebook group for a breed of dog (silken windhounds which are a cross between afghan hounds and whippets I believe?) where there’s a lot of chat about how KV registered breeders are the only ethical breeders there are and anything else is more or less considered abuse. To a certain extent I understand why new breeds like these might benefit from some sort of “control” when breeding if they are bred for specific personality traits that you can’t guarantee from crossing any individuals. Eg. Folk expect Labradoodles to be hairy like a poodle with the personality of a Labrador, but because they because they became popular backyard breeders were just doing any only cross and huzzah loads of people have unexpected traits in the puppy they just got. But when it comes to selective breeding so that the dogs fit the bill physically, I just struggle to see KC club breeders as such ethical icons. There are just so many absolutely terrible health defects associated with breeding for exaggerated traits that can cause a miserable life for the dogs. No matter what the KC club argue they do to prevent this, as soon as you are benefitting financially from dogs that express the physical traits that are emblematic of the breed, people are going to breed for them at the expense of the dogs. by Desmodusrotundus (Fri 7th Jul 2023 4:39am)

  • We don’t have a factor. 2/6 flats are owned by housing association, 2 are privately owned and last 2 are shops at street level. Housing association paid up no questions asked for communal repairs, 18 months later and were still waiting for money from the others. I started off nice as pie with them all, real optimistic that we could improve the communal areas but I’m sick to the back teeth of all of them now because we put loads of work and money into improving it and they don’t cough up after saying they will and then continue to mess up areas we’ve tried to fix / clean / improve. The conclusion I’ve arrived at is that we like our flat, the mortgage is affordable for us, and if it means over paying for communal stuff then I’ll just have to try to get over it. My partner is much more easy going about it than me. I’d be ready to have arguments with them all if I had half the chance but I’m trying to be zen. So do with that what you will! If you’re like my partner and you like the flat enough then it’s worth it. Don’t touch it with a barge pole if it’s already out of your budget and you have a short fuse. by Desmodusrotundus (Fri 25th Aug 2023 2:49pm)

They just used the door that was there already. Do you already have a buzzer system? That could be a big part of the cost if not. Even so, £9k is outrageous. by Desmodusrotundus (Tue 5th Sep 2023 9:45pm)

It’s actually been great. Emptied multiple times a week, big bin is locked so no trouble with abuse from businesses, and the recycling bins have smaller holes so there seems to have been less of the “any bin’ll do” mentality. by Desmodusrotundus (Wed 25th Oct 2023 3:02pm)
