  • Because the blue bins at my place are overflowing, I took my weekend booze empties to the recycling this morning - in my 1.9 diesel car. I like to think I'm making a difference, but am I really? by StaunerMcGregor (Mon 15th Jul 2019 11:14am)

He's really struggling to train iit, and that's because it spends most of it's day in the place. • A few weeks ago I seen a GCC van with 3 guys in it. They stopped at a bin, 2 got out, one opened the bin, the other changed the bag inside. 3 guys. Even worse, they walked past a huge pile of domestic rubbish that somebody had chucked all over the pavement and road. Walked right past it because, hey, it's no their job to picked up stuff manky bastards have dumped in the street. These guys are specialists. They're in charge of bins. They're the 3 Mankiteers. • I wrote to my 'community police officer' about a similar situation. Somebody phoned me weeks later asking what exactly was it I wanted them to do. When I told them the police had been in attendance when the guy next door got sectioned, they replied "Sectioned? Not arrested? Nothing to do with us. Bye." Still got a mad bastard living next door who, if not dealt with properly, is going to do himself or somebody else a serious fucking mischief. Also posted a letter (recorded delivery) to adult services detailing my concerns and asking for help/advice. Reply? Fuck all. Nothing. Blanked. by StaunerMcGregor (Thu 22nd Aug 2019 4:41pm)
  • Although my own situation is scarily similar, it isn't quite as bad as your predicament. I'm really sorry this is happening to you, I empathise 100% and I hope you find a solution soon. My neighbour waits until about 2am, starts screaming at whoever, then just stands and repeatedly slams his kitchen door. Wakes up the entire building. Now, on top of whatever mental illness he has, he looks to be on the drugs. We've had enough. We're selling up. My wife's terrified. Can't live like this. by StaunerMcGregor (Thu 22nd Aug 2019 5:18pm)
  • Have you got experience with this? An example of it happening? by StaunerMcGregor (Fri 23rd Aug 2019 7:33am)
  • Our situation is that this guy lived in the flat on-and-off with an elderly neighbour, who just about managed to keep him in check. She went into full-time care a coupla years ago and he's been left to fly solo. There's periods of him clearly not taking his medication and going into complete meltdown. I thought when the old dear went into a home that her property would be sold to pay for her care, but he's obviously lived there long enough, even intermittently, to keep tenancy. Plus, as your council employee stated, where are they going to put him? Even if they could find him somewhere it would be expensive, so his current living arrangement is probably of 'best value' to the council. They just keep him in there, keep their fingers crossed he's taking his medication and staying out of trouble. But he's not keeping out of trouble, he's keeping the building awake at night with his antics which he clearly knows are drawing attention to him. It's why he does it - acting like a child looking for attention. It's extremely fucking unnerving to be woken by a cunt across the close giving you your character, even when you haven't had a conversation with them for years. He appeared in the close with a knife one night about a year ago, damage was caused, and he got a fine, a slap on the wrist and promptly put back into the building. And now, as i mentioned earlier, he looks to be developing a drug habit. He never EVER left the place. Now he's in and out constantly, down to hang about the shops to pick up whatever he's self-medicating with. The house is stinkin' and he's emaciated. The future doesn't look good, so we're offski. by StaunerMcGregor (Fri 23rd Aug 2019 7:30am)

  • I was walking along Kelvin Way yesterday morning and seen a young guy on the wrong side of the bridge over the Kelvin. 'Oh shit!' I thought. Suicide. Got closer to him and could see he wasn't in any distress. Complete opposite actually. I asked him if he was awright then a lassie's heid pops up from below the wall. The guy just grins and her heid disappears again. Nae bother. Enjoy yersels. On my way back up that way last night I looked over to see what they were standing on. A tiny fucking ledge!! Some drop to the water too. by StaunerMcGregor (Sun 22nd Dec 2019 1:36pm)

  • I don't know what to say to you, mate. You're clearly a Gerry Cinnamon fan who's raging I'm placing responsibility on an element of concertgoers who were at the Hydro. All I can tell you is, I work down there. I go running down there. Every day. I see patterns of behaviour depending on what gigs are on. The other morning the place was an absolute shite hole. Empty cans of Dragon Soup EVERYWHERE. Empty bottles of wine EVERYWHERE. A right fucking mess. Even in the water with the lifebelts. The same life belts that were in position on Friday morning. See if it's just a coincidence they ended up in the water the very weekend there's two GC gigs on at the Hydro wae literally HUNDREDS (maybe thousands) of steamin' weans down the Clydeside then, it's just a coincidence and I apologise for hurting your feelings. • What happens at this particular spot is folk, usually self-employed, turn up at the council dump with a van of rubbish. The council won't let vans in because it's for domestic waste only. • Encountered my first bit of supermarket aggression today. A woman and her teenage son, who's about 16, realise there's a queued system inside the store. The young boys not having any of it and goes to walk past everyone despite his mum asking him not to. I give him a casual "Everybody else is queuing, mate" , to which he replies "WELL EVERYBODY ELSE ARE FUCKIN' FANNIES!!" His mum then shouts at him "WHY ARE YOU BEING LIKE THIS, ROSS? YOU'RE NOT NORMALLY LIKE THIS." and runs out the store. HE then starts the 'whoyoufuckinlookinit?' shite with me, a man standing with 3 packets of pampers wet wipes in my hand. "Your Mum's waiting on you, Ross." I retorted. Today, Ross' mum found out her son was a wee bam. by StaunerMcGregor (Thu 9th Apr 2020 3:12pm)

  • Over the years I've seen the canal being transformed from an absolute no-go zone, into the valuable and much used transport link it is now. Great to see people whizzing in and out the city, safe from the carnage of the roads. Presently though, it's just overrun with folk who look like they've never been on a bike for years and with no awareness of other people. No moving for anybody. There's groups of wee guys taking to cycling aboot while tanning bevvy. And, just as you mentioned, groups of wee fannies deliberately obstructing the path. It's been an eye opener for sure. by StaunerMcGregor (Sat 11th Apr 2020 11:34am)

And a girls clothes shop too. Bizarrely, I remember it used to sell Saspirilla jeans for lassies. by StaunerMcGregor (Wed 10th Jun 2020 9:09am)

I think a lot of flats are going to come flooding onto the market as folk are going to have had their fingers burned with rentals and air b'n'b short term lets causing them grief, leaving them out of pocket, and just thinking 'fuck this' and getting places punted. Another neighbour has been using it to pish in during lockdown because he cannae be fucked walking the 40m back to his flat when he's boozing outdide. • Porter & Rye. by StaunerMcGregor (Sun 12th Jul 2020 8:37pm)
  • I live in the Sandbank Street part of Maryhill, and it's fine. You get your share of bams, but no worse than anywhere else in Glasgow. I'd go as far to say as Maryhill is a decent place to stay. Near Lock 21 you're right on the Forth & Clyde Canal. And Dawsholm Park, Garscube Estate and the River Kelvin are all just a pleasant walk away. A lovely walk down to the Uni during the summer months. These places have been mobbed during the recent good weather, but, like any path and park though (anywhere in the world) avoid when it's likely to be too quiet. Try and give a street name before you sign up though, because one or two wee pockets might be a bit shabby - particularly the Collina Street flats, and perhaps Fingal street. by StaunerMcGregor (Wed 15th Jul 2020 9:46pm)

Hit and miss in places, but reasonable rent for somewhere that's a 15 minute walk away. • You ever felt the wind that blows right up the Clyde? The kinda wind that would cut you in two? I've cycled and ran down there in the summer, and even then it's brutal. Just cold I think we could handle, but it's the wind, man. And the rain. I've been to Amsterdam in a right biting cold winter, and it's tolerable. Frankfurt too. • Don't chain your bike to the railings. In the event of the bike getting stolen, the railings will inevitably get damaged. That opens up a whole load of shite about who's responsible for the repair. In the end, the rest of the homeowners end up having to pay. Happened at my place with a bike chained to a plastic pipe outside. When it was eventually stolen, the plastic downpipe, gutter and soffits were all damaged. Factor wasn't interested, bike owner moved out during it all, and his landlord just blanked the entire issue. The rest of us paid for the repair in the end. £50 each for a stranger's bike that got stolen. Pish. Also, the chained up in the stairwell thing - it's irresponsible. Stairs are for access and egress into the building - particularly in the event of fire. Bikes present an obstacle for firefighters entering a building, and residents evacuating a building. Plus, it's unfair for other's belongings to clutter a shared area. Keep it in your flat. by StaunerMcGregor (Mon 27th Jul 2020 7:44am)

  • Never been housed there, but my work took me in there a lot. Like any high rise in the city, it's varies extremely. You've got old dears who've lived there since it was built, and absolute roasters who've been rehoused there because there's nowhere else for them. Each floor can literally be a different world. Some are well maintained and looked after with a bit of pride, some are just stinking with the usual bad apples that you find all over this city ruining it for others. So, in short, it's a lottery what building and what floor he gets put in. The location is excellent (apart from the one right next to the motorway that might get a bit noisy) but give the place a regular mop with some pine disinfectant and keep yourself to yourself, and i'm sure he'll get by ok. by StaunerMcGregor (Tue 6th Oct 2020 7:09am)

  • 1. What one is known, for a fact, to be 'arson' for the purpose of developers wanting to clear an area. Post your proof. 2. Stobhill. How long ago was that? Have the developers moved in? What are developers going to build on a site owned by the NHS and on the doorstep of a mental health unit? Another hospital building perhaps? 3. A vacant and derelict hospital and world renowned art school are two completely different entities. For pretty obvious reasons, primarily financial, one would qualify for a more robust investigation than the other. Try, just try, and apply a bit of logic to this. ps. I can hear the gig starting as I get near the bar to see about half the bar staff standing chatting. One lassie just wandering about like a fart in a trance. She tries to pour some pints, and fucks them up. Pours them down the sink. Starts again, all the while giggling at her pal while 100+ folk still queue. by StaunerMcGregor (Sat 23rd Oct 2021 11:04am)

  • I had a relative who owned a fruit shop in a scheme in Glasgow. It was basically a front for drug addicts to come in and exchange money and shoplifted goods for heroin. He sold barely anything in the shop, in fact, the shelves were almost bare with the exception of a few apples that had seen better days. I was so young and naive to the illegal shit that was going on that I'd pop in to say hello, and maybe buy an apple - just so I could be seen to be supportive of his business. • Uch, he was a closeted guy who lived upstairs from me with his wife (a woman). A really bitter bitter guy who just couldn't stand seeing everyone else getting on with and enjoying their lives. We had a street (cul-de-sac) get-together/BBQ one night and, when he came home drunk from the pub, I caught him in our close tearing up the notice inviting everybody to the BBQ. I challenged him and asked him why he was such a horrible cunt. He tried to push me so I grabbed him and threw him into the pavement outside. My wife managed to get a hold of me, but the rest of the neighbours piled in. He got roughed-up a bit but not really injured. • Was the alarm in the Reid building faulty or not? And, say it wasn't, say it was working fine, it would need to be affected by smoke in the early stages of the fire for it to actuate. Yes, later on smoke might've got into the building when the windows failed as a result of the heat. By that time, you still in charge of alarms and evacuations? No, everyone apart from the emergency services are WELL out the picture. And lets go back to your initial point - how does any of this mean it was arson? by StaunerMcGregor (Tue 25th Jan 2022 11:23pm)

My uncle (on my mum's side) told me if you seen this guy, who had a recognizable gait, from a distance - you changed direction instantly as you never knew what frame of mind you'd find this guy in, or if you were likely to get your jaw tanned. This all happened in the 70s, but then in the 90s I started buying hash of the guy. He was in my house one night and my uncle dropped by. You could see that, 20+ years later he was still visible terrified of this guy. It was after this night he told me about the slashing stuff and how I should give this nutjob a wide berth. The guy died later in life after a lengthy debilitating condition which seen him pretty much disabled and bed bound. Karma. by StaunerMcGregor (Sat 3rd Sep 2022 9:06am)

  • The building game is a fucking shambles at the moment with the industry saturated with absolute chancers, so, your default SHOULD be 'dont trust tradesmen'. Make sure you get proper quotes off them first, and definitely do some research into the legitimacy of their business. We're currently onto our fourth builder on a fairly straightforward renovation because these cunts are seemingly incapable of telling the truth, or showing people any respect. My advice is, if during the process they start messing you around, take your keys off them and tell them to fuck off. And I mean, actually tell them to "fuck off" because it's the only language they understand. Any attempts to resolve things like an honest adult, will only see them continue to rip the pish out of you. I feel your pain, OP. This has been one of the most stressful things I've ever experienced in my life, and I usually don't let things get to me. If it's any consolation, you're not alone out there. Rogue builders are everywhere, and you've unfortunately encountered one of the worst. I hope you come out the other side soon. by StaunerMcGregor (Mon 5th Jun 2023 9:19pm)
  • Agreed on the warning sign of them being available immediately. If you get the line "I've got a big job to start soon, but I should be able to squeeze you in"... run a mile. If you want a legit builder, you're going to have to wait months. If they're available immediately, they aren't worth having. by StaunerMcGregor (Mon 5th Jun 2023 10:25pm)
  • Yes, I naively paid one of them some money in advance. This was the one who came recommended the highest, and turned out to be the worst by far. Initially thought we were lucky to get him because of some good work he'd carried out for a relative in the past. Tuned out he'd had a spectacular fall from grace since that work, and was now essentially just conning everyone who employed him, leaving a trail of devastation everywhere he went. • This is all great advice, and should be pinned as the top comment. Problem is with a lot of interaction with builders is people's inexperience dealing with people from this industry. The bullshit from these guys is unbelievable, unlike anything most people from other professional backgrounds have ever dealt with in their lives, and once you let them into your life, they've got you over a barrel and pretty much dictate your life. This is why the information in the comment above is important. It's vital to remember that it's YOUR house, and YOU are in charge. You HAVE to call the shots. The likelihood is your going to have to have some interactions with these guys which are way out of you're comfort zone. I had to tell a builder that he was a useless lying cunt. My exact words. I've never spoke to someone like that in my life before, and I hope I don't again. I'm embarrassed that someone drove me to that, and feel stupid for being so naive, but it was 100% necessary. Give some of these guys an inch, and they'll walk all over you. You can find yourself in quite a vulnerable position (ie pretty much homeless) and they couldn't give a flying fuck. It's been an absolute eye-opener to what is a murky industry awash with with so many unqualified and unprofessional dicks. by StaunerMcGregor (Tue 6th Jun 2023 10:25am)
