  • I moved here from overseas too, and tbh, I could scrape by, and sooner or later you get an ear for it. The most difficult bit is the use of scots, which is used pretty widely across the city intermingled with English. Like "what have you got in your pieces??" Pieces = sandwiches. "I'm going to get the messages" - groceries. People really are awesome, and they'll think it's funny that you dont know what a "messages" is. They'll slow down, and try to help. Dont expect a translation or any concession from First Bus drivers though - I've seen them boot people off the bus for not understanding their mumble through the perspex. My tip for them, would be learn to say your destination exactly like a local. by 90sRobot (Sun 5th Apr 2020 8:07am)

  • The Childrens Wood in the G20 postcode is a good one, they don't always get much help because everyone assumes they're a posh west-end charity, they're not - they work on a shoe-string budget providing constructive outlets for at risk youths, feeding them, keeping them out of trouble. Right now the kids are cooking meals and delivering them to people who are sheilding/self-isolating or who are just going hungry due to the shit-show that is 2020. by 90sRobot (Fri 8th May 2020 8:27am)

  • I got one as we have no extractor fan in the bathroom, over winter I'll leave it running for an hr or two, it can suck up a surprising amount of water from the air. by 90sRobot (Tue 19th May 2020 10:37pm)
  • Thanks! "nothing out of the ordinary" is good in my book! I nearly moved into the Wallace St apartments around 9 years ago, was about to sign on the dotted line when someone told me I should google them. I figured I should run past Reddit to check for any well known meth-labs or brothels running out of any future properties I look into.. :D by 90sRobot (Tue 26th May 2020 11:42am)
  • Nice. I was once crossing over the canal on the bridge up Ruchill St, A group of wee boys were looking at a pair of swans (or, I THOUGHT they were just looking), so I offered the boys some bread from my groceries to feed the swan. They snatched the bread roll out of my hand and lobbed it at the swan, whacking it with a whole dinner roll, and then they demanded the rest of the bread I had. Closest I've ever been to being mugged. by 90sRobot (Tue 26th May 2020 4:53pm)

  • I think you can access from the rowing club at glasgow green, call the club/council for access,... alternatively, the fence is very low and people are always sneaking thru the grounds. by 90sRobot (Wed 17th Jun 2020 10:11pm)

  • Excellent work. Littering is just such a mindless act by some glaswegians. I once saw a fully grown man drop his bus ticket on the ground right by a rubbish bin at a bus stop. In other countries that would be so shocking/unacceptable that you'd be confronted. I also believe that the council play a role, why try to find a bin, if the ground is already littered? by 90sRobot (Tue 23rd Jun 2020 6:13am)

  • Sadly not, more bits and pieces really -the biggest thing I have is 6 wee stackable stools from ikea. I know the feeling of living among boxes, gumtree is usually really good for second hand furniture, I've had loads of bargains. by 90sRobot (Thu 2nd Jul 2020 5:57pm)

  • I don't know of any groups, im a bit outwith that demographic. There seems to be a few Facebook groups for students, if you do a wee search. Glasgow has lots of Universities and colleges, so you'll have no trouble meeting folk in the same boat. If you're moving into a hall of residence, make an effort to knock on your hall-mates doors to say hello, introduce yourself, see about organising a night out to break the ice, or dinner in (if we're still in semi-lockdown) :) by 90sRobot (Mon 6th Jul 2020 8:40pm)
  • do you have jumper cables?? I could swing by on my way to lidl after work? But I don't have cables. Otherwise, I could suggest Brilliant Bartering page on facebook - offer up a tin of tomatoes or a loaf of bread and someone will come and do it for you. :) by 90sRobot (Thu 9th Jul 2020 2:22pm)
  • yeah do, it's a wee community of really friendly nice people, someone here suggested it to me and I've been totally hooked since. I think it's mostly for people to swap unwanted stuff, but I needed a favour done the other day and the admins approved my post and I was swamped with offer for help :) by 90sRobot (Thu 9th Jul 2020 2:29pm)
  • this is off topic, but, having worked for a shitty employer, for next to no money, dealing with customers who despise me and are rude and abusive - I couldn't roll my eyes any harder when reading that. by 90sRobot (Thu 9th Jul 2020 4:57pm)
  • In my opinion, being treated like shit, isn't an excuse to treat others like shit. by 90sRobot (Thu 9th Jul 2020 5:41pm)
  • Yep, I work for a really little company, there's only a few of us. I can't see us going back to the office full time if I'm honest. We've been bashing ideas about, perhaps getting a hot-desk 1 day a week so we can all get together, and then WFH the rest of the time. Rent/rates/insurance and all the rest of it is actually a big expense to bare for a small company. If i find myself looking for another job, I'll be asking about what they did during lockdown, and if they still allow staff to WFH, if not, why not. Because the answer 9 times out of 10 is going to be "so we can watch what you're doing". by 90sRobot (Wed 15th Jul 2020 1:03pm)
  • I live really close to those locks. Its handy because you can cycle or walk nearly the whole way into town without having to go on the road. I've never had any problems, (anywhere in Glasgow let alone Maryhill). Theres a good butcher, a couple of supermarkets and good transport links. As with any city, be careful about where you go alone at night - 99% of the time you'll be fine. Don't start fights with drunk people. Be polite and courteous and people will be polite and courteous back. I would say that in terms of housing its a really mixed bag in this area, some really beautiful flats, and some awful dives. Difficult to advise you without an ad or address. by 90sRobot (Wed 15th Jul 2020 10:16pm)
  • I dont think I go fast enough to jangle anything!! Although that but by Applecross Wharf is not fun. by 90sRobot (Thu 16th Jul 2020 6:49pm)
  • There's a guy on my street who has one. He keeps it chained and under a tarp, and i don't think he's had any bother. I used to have a scooter before i moved to Glasgow, and I have been tempted to get another, but to be honest, the roads can be so icy in winter, or blowing an absolute gale in autumn and spring (or even summer), that I didnt think I'd get enough use. There are not many scooters on the roads. But quite a few cyclists. Perhaps an e-bike is a better shout?? by 90sRobot (Mon 20th Jul 2020 7:51pm)
  • Yeah I think Dennistoun has been going over HR for a while, but it seems to have spread a little wider, and not necessarily half-decent. by 90sRobot (Mon 20th Jul 2020 8:51pm)

  • Probably but, it's hard to know what to bid! by 90sRobot (Mon 20th Jul 2020 10:26pm)
  • We're thinking about doing that, there's quite a specific area we're looking at though and we're worried it might not happen if we don't jump at whats available just now :( so hard to know what to do!! by 90sRobot (Tue 21st Jul 2020 10:02am)
  • I would say if you're not in any desperately urgent hurry, wait 6 months, the estate agents I've spoken to, predicted a total shit-storm of buying and selling at the end of lockdown, which will last about 6-8 weeks, then it would taper off, and winter would be when the madness dies down. If you're living at home right now and saving, keep doing that, don't move into a rented flat. Landlord price-gouging is just mind-blowing, you'll never save for a deposit in a rental,.. or you might, but at a snails pace. by 90sRobot (Tue 21st Jul 2020 3:00pm)
  • Yeah, totally. Renting is just a money sink. Worst case, maybe see about a private rental rather than going thru an agency? by 90sRobot (Tue 21st Jul 2020 7:42pm)
  • That's what i think, Glasgow is still one of the cheapest cities in the UK to buy.. by 90sRobot (Tue 21st Jul 2020 7:40pm)
  • Yep, went to closing, got an offer on day two, which we wanted to accept, but had 8 notes. Possibly undervalued maybe. But we were happy with the offer we accepted. It was literally head spinning. Agent said he'd not seen anything like it. by 90sRobot (Tue 21st Jul 2020 10:13pm)
  • Our first solicitor was Frederick & Co. I cant describe how stressful and unhelpful I found them. The person we were buying from, was with Conveyancing Direct, at about 25% of the cost of what we paid (obviously difference between purchase and sale, but still), and she seemed to get much better service, so that's who we're with now. by 90sRobot (Tue 21st Jul 2020 10:17pm)
  • Yeah, unfortunately no one has time to help first time buyers, its like the whole thing is rigged to be unhelpful. Agents, brokers, lawyers all assume you know everything. I guess I'm working on the basis that if they're all crap, I might as well save some cash. by 90sRobot (Wed 22nd Jul 2020 10:35pm)
  • Unfortunately, no one will help, and you don't have anyone to trust as a first time buyer because no one is working for you. (just as a reminder, because even I forget: sellers agents don't care about you, they want you to tell them what you'll pay, so they can use you to hike someone else's price, and your mortgage broker is getting paid commission by banks) You THINK your solicitor will help, but actually, they just want to tick the box, take your £1.5k, and never see you again. The absolute best thing you can do, is just talk to people you know who have bought recently, (or previously). My absolute most golden piece of advice is NEVER agree to package up your solicitor and broker, with any kind of cost-saving promotion which the sellers agent offers you, it's not a good deal, and then your whole team really is working for the seller. by 90sRobot (Thu 23rd Jul 2020 8:57pm)
  • That case was just horrific, I followed it from the first few Facebook posts of her not coming home last night, it was so tragic watching it unfold. Hopefully her killer is slowly rotting away somewhere dark and pathetic. by 90sRobot (Mon 3rd Aug 2020 10:52pm)
  • Surely not, it was just such a shocking and horrific crime, with zero remorse shown that he'll rot away for a long time, the public would be totally outraged if he gets out early. At least he has such an unusual name it'll ring alarm bells when anyone hears it. by 90sRobot (Tue 4th Aug 2020 2:11pm)
  • Location is definitely not the issue. youre a 5 minute walk to a train 2 stops into Q St, buses on Maryhill Rd every 10 mins, and its a 40 minute slow stroll to Byres Rd. Massive tesco, asda, shops and pubs all within reasonable walking distance, plus you're right on the canal, which folk love. I live right around the corner and there's swarms of first time buyers snapping stuff up. That said 'm really suspicious of them, I've also wondered why they're so cheap and always available. by 90sRobot (Thu 6th Aug 2020 9:53pm)
  • This. 99.9999% you'll be absolutely fine. But don't be afraid to ask a driver for help or someone who looks responsible. Creeps will leave you alone if you shame them loudly. by 90sRobot (Mon 10th Aug 2020 8:02pm)
  • I don't know if theres a bit of grey area if she has usually communicated through messenger and suddenly didn't. If they have proof they've tried to call her or contact her by other means then I'd say she's in some bother. But if they're "asking her to resign", rather than sacking her outright, then I would take that as a sign their position is weak and they know it. by 90sRobot (Tue 18th Aug 2020 4:22pm)

  • Yeah I've not made it all the way to the top, but we got as far as the big boulders. Which I think is probably about 2 thirds. Stunning views, It was manageable if you go slow, take some rests and bring a snack or 5. :D There were LOADS of people running up and down past me though, no idea how they do it. by 90sRobot (Mon 5th Oct 2020 2:16pm)
  • I dont know why this is being down voted so much, my partner made £800 with this. Eventually you'll be banned from the betting sights, but only after you've taken their "free bets". The downside is it takes A LOT of time. by 90sRobot (Sat 28th Nov 2020 8:57am)

  • Are you selling as well? If so, chat with your agent. Maybe phone a couple of agents who have properties in the area and ask them roughly how much over HR places are going,..? In Sept we sold in Maryhill for 10% over HR, but know someone who bought under HR in City centre. Its crazy at the moment. by 90sRobot (Thu 25th Feb 2021 4:16pm)
  • Glasgow is a lovely place to live, it's my adopted city as well, but as a fellow immigrants, I'd warmly suggest that some areas are more lovely than others. What's your budget like? Glasgow is far more affordable than a lot of Canadian cities. If you're happy spending 7-800/month on rent, I'd suggest a place in the west end, kelvingrove, Hillhead, hyndland, somewhere just off byres Rd or Queen Margaret Drive. Dennistoun is also great, -aim for "the drives", which are a grid of streets between Duke St and Alexandra Parade, sandstone tenements. If you can maybe rent an Airbnb for a few weeks and get your bearings that might be the best idea. You'll soon see how neighbourhoods vary. I hope you'll like it. I'd recommend joining some clubs to get a kick start to meet people. They're very friendly, but sometimes you just need the right opportunity to make friends :) Happy moving, and enjoy exploring! by 90sRobot (Mon 1st Mar 2021 7:55pm)
  • In normal times there's lots of meet-ups and groups. Check out meetup.com, or, if you're on Facebook see if you can find a community Facebook group to see what's happening. Maryhill/Ruchill areas might be a good compromise between price and comfort, you're literally on the edge of the west-end, walking distance to town/cafes, well connected with buses and trains, but cheaper to live. by 90sRobot (Mon 1st Mar 2021 9:19pm)
  • You 100% must turn on the lights, taps, shower, flush the loo. Open every cupboard. Check around the ceilings and windows for signs of damp. Walk around outside the building look for cracks. TAKE PICTURES OF EVERYTHING so you can remember, and ask others for second opinions. Ignore what your mortgage advisor tells you, you can afford and work out what you can afford each month, and go from there. Think about how you'll cover the mortgage or repairs if you become unemployed. Once you have a mortgage, over pay if you can, even £50 a month can save you thousands in interest in the long run. Use zoopla house price report to see what other houses are selling for (it's usually about 3 months old, but it'll give you an idea). Most important, this is really hard to remember, when you don't know who to speak to but, NO ONE IS YOUR FRIEND! The agent is working for the seller, and just wants a good price and will completely screw you over if you tell him too much. If you love a place, immediately put a note of interest in with your *solicitor*. If you really love it, put a time limited offer in, eg, "£250k expires in 48 hours", by 90sRobot (Thu 11th Mar 2021 7:46am)

  • There have been quite few examples of Scotland NOT wanting to remove immigrants from their homes, but being forced to by Westminster, judging by the outpouring of support and empathy for these men it looks like this is another example. • I dont know what plane you're talking about, and I don't think we can look at the everyone as potential rapists and murderers, these men were known and cared for by their community and the reason for arrest was "suspected immigration offences", not "suspected rape and murder". Also,... *suspected* not *guilty*. I suspect you didn't mean it to sound this way, but it kind of reads like you see a brown person and think "ach, they might be guilty of a violent crime"? by 90sRobot (Fri 14th May 2021 1:48pm)
  • Very few people you'll ever encounter are going to be bad people. That number doesn't increase if you make friends with a Muslim or Christian or Sikh or jew. People are mostly normal good people, and being of a certain colour or religion doesn't change thr likelihood of being bad or good. by 90sRobot (Fri 14th May 2021 2:57pm)
  • it absolutely makes me sick to my stomach when you hear of people who emigrated when they were children and had no will of their own, who then get forcibly removed from the only home they've ever known because of a mistake. Australia is terrible for this, its like they think you committed the crime because you're British, or Thai or Kiwi, not because you were raised in a shitty society which led you to make bad choices. by 90sRobot (Fri 14th May 2021 4:36pm)

  • I hear you. It can be such a lonely place when you move as an adult. Everyone has their friend groups and it's hard to break into., I spent a good year of my life dating losers and spending my weekends eating canned soup and watching coronation st. I hated people telling me how to make friends when I first arrived, but that said,... I'd also recommend finding some local groups on [meetup.com](https://meetup.com) or facebook, which you're (even only kind of) interested in - even if you're not a complete hiking fanatic, you might make other connections on some other level. Wild West Swimmers is an open water swimming group on facebook they're always organising get togethers. Also, see about doing an evening class, or art class, language or something? I think the important thing is, no one makes an instant connection straight away, with friends or love-interests, you just need to stick with it. I want to say "be yourself", but I'm also the type of person who'd get a bit freaked out if someone wanted to have a deep emotional connection after only the first couple of dates, so maybe, my advice is to hint at being yourself, but try to not get too loved up too soon. Read the room. Work wise it kind of sounds like you'd settle well into small team, or growing company - I don't know what your skills are, but maybe try to approach some local start ups with your skillset, see if anyone's hiring? Is freelancing an option? by 90sRobot (Wed 19th May 2021 7:39pm)
  • It doesn't take much to turn playing nasty, and if he has a small dog, I can't imagine he's prepared to risk it for the sake of experimenting. Besides, your comment misses the point that off lead dogs, with no recall are a nuisance. by 90sRobot (Sun 30th May 2021 1:53am)
  • I'm in this exact position. Our rescue is VERY reactive to other dogs. We're working with a trainer, but every time someone's "lovely labradoodle", gets in his face, we take a massive step back in training. To be clear, it's absolutely not my dog who'll get hurt in this scenario, but it'll traumatise him. by 90sRobot (Sun 30th May 2021 1:58am)
  • Paesano is so overrated IMO. Their whole ploy is to keep people queuing outside to create the illusion of demand. by 90sRobot (Wed 9th Jun 2021 5:32pm)
  • Rubbish, I've been dragged along 3 times by friends (years ago - pre-pandemic), and every single time we've had to queue outside. We can't possibly be thinking of the same place if you believe queuing is post-pandemic by 90sRobot (Thu 10th Jun 2021 10:17am)

  • I mean, I think I've gone about as far as I can to convince a random Internet person that there are queues outside of Paesano. But for shits and giggles, page one has 1 review from after Feb 2020, which is Aug 2020. The rest are pre-pandemic, page 2 is all 2019, page 3 2019-2018, I guess there in date order. by 90sRobot (Thu 10th Jun 2021 4:21pm)

  • Yeah, I think I may have selected seasonal (or maybe local) only, so that probably didn't help. You could always cancel if you start getting bored. I endednup cancelling and then just nipping to roots and fruits once a week, picking my own vege. by 90sRobot (Thu 22nd Jul 2021 3:42pm)
  • I've seen that before on my commute to ed - the west bound side went dead no traffic for a few mins and then a procession of flashie blues and bikes sandwiching a prisoner van. At the time I saw it there was some high profile (IRA i think?!!) trials going on in Ggow, and assumed they were high risk prisoners. by 90sRobot (Thu 29th Jul 2021 5:00pm)
  • If you find somewhere you love, go in with your max bid and put a 24 hr expiry on it. Stress the expiry to your lawyer, its important because you don't want tongive the seller time to go to closing, or let their agent use your price to up other buyers. (They're not supposed to, but, they do - ive been the other buyer). Do not speak to their agent yourself. Another thing is to look at places that need a bit of work. As I long as you can move in, does it matter if the kitchen is minging? You can save up to replace it. I just did our kitchen for £6k. We got onto the property ladder by buying a disgusting little flat that hadn't been renovated since 1970s. Ask for home reports on places that don't have great photos (or any). If there's nothing scary on the HR, go and check it out, you're likely competing with less FT buyers. by 90sRobot (Sat 31st Jul 2021 7:36am)
  • When we were buying in Aug last year we were told Londoners are coming up, they can WFH now, and have realised for the same price they were expecting to pay for a shitey wee bedsit in Croydon, they can get a 4 bed townhouse overlooking Kelvingrove. Why not? by 90sRobot (Sat 31st Jul 2021 7:45am)
  • look in Ruchill, Summerston, Maryhill, Kelvindale, Anniesland, Cardonald, Kings Park, Croftfoot. They're all perfectly acceptable places to live, maybe a bit suburban, but, and don't have super fancy cafe's on your door step. You'd have no difficulty biking into uni, or grabbing the bus. by 90sRobot (Wed 11th Aug 2021 2:28pm)
  • If you don't have pet rodents, you can get a spider scarer, it emits a frequency thst spiders don't like. And it actually works. Lived in a place in Glasgow with total monsters appearing everyday, and after we got it I maybe saw 1 or 2. by 90sRobot (Tue 31st Aug 2021 6:06am)

  • My only experience selling was Purple Bricks, and it was fine. We did all the viewings ourselves which was good because we could actual "sell", rather than leave buyers to just wander around. Agent was availability to phone fit advice etc. Stephen was his name but can't remember his last. As a buyer I've been to loads of viewings where the agent puppets the door and leave you to it, and can't answer any questions you have. I've always thought I'd be so cross if I was the seller paying for that service. by 90sRobot (Tue 9th Nov 2021 6:19am)

I'd hired a van to move ourselves, 4pm on the day of completion, as I was sitting outside of our new house, I got a call from our solicitor to say the sellers solicitor had only just requested clarification on something in the legal pack, it took 3 days to sort it. We ended up staying in a Premier Inn. Just be prepared for unexpected delays. by 90sRobot (Wed 23rd Feb 2022 10:40pm)

  • 2 weeks is a long time, if definitely suggest showing off a bit more than just Glasgow. You could get out to Balmaha on Loch Lomond, do whisky tour at Auchentoshen or Glengoyne, get a train up to Pitlochry. Stirling Castle is amazing. For food, everyone seems to love Paesano. For sights, I always think Glasgow Cathedral is pretty impressive, there's lots of info on history of Glasgow. University of Glasgow has lots of nice architecture, plus the Huntarian museum is great. • I cannot express the rage I feel when my leashed dog gets dirty looks for throwing a fit when some utter prick allows their out of control, unmanageable dog to run off lead right at us. I had to lift my 30 kg dog into the air to stop him killing (and he would have) an off lead jack russell puppy that couldn't read social cues. by 90sRobot (Wed 22nd Jun 2022 3:49am)
  • *Un-leashed dog owners. Leashed dog owners would love to have their dogs run free, but realise they're a danger. by 90sRobot (Wed 22nd Jun 2022 3:57am)
  • Not true and actually extremely offensive to people who would love to allow their dogs to run free. I've spent thousands on training my dog, his recall is about 95%, but the damage done to him before we rescued him is difficult to train out, so he stays on a lead. When my on-lead dog bites an off lead dog, it's not my dog that is out of control and unmanaged. by 90sRobot (Wed 22nd Jun 2022 4:03am)
