  • I'd reckon this the best advice here = just let the cops know, you don't have to make a complaint. They will at least know the relevant agencies who might be able to have a look AND they'll already have a note of her behaviour should she start sending people to your door etc. by macdangerous (Thu 22nd Aug 2019 4:21pm)
  • Definitely shut. I used to use it everyday because the pastries were lovely and the staff were much nicer than Tesco but they done away with the hot croissants and then gradually ran it into the ground. I ended up reluctantly going into Tesco for the better selection. I think the staff all got moved to different shops tho, so at least they kept their jobs. by macdangerous (Wed 23rd Oct 2019 7:21pm)
  • Plus 1 for The Drovers. It's manky but always a laugh. It's also got a two-headed lamb on display. Full of character. by macdangerous (Thu 19th Dec 2019 6:30pm)

  • Tell the agents you're willing to pay an extra £100 deposit and offer to have the carpets *professionally* cleaned at the end of the tenancy. I know it's not fair but it will make a difference to agent's attitude. The agents don't care whether you've got a dog or not - they care about potential damage and getting rid of dog smell at the end of the tenancy. Be careful about moving into a flat and not telling the landlord - lots of leases have a specific clause stating no pets. Used to be in the business - good luck! by macdangerous (Mon 10th Feb 2020 1:15pm)
  • Yeh there was a nest opposite the arboretum for a couple years. The birds travelled right down to the flint mill to hunt. Haven't seen them there for a few years now but was standing on the wee bridge at the canal locks last summer when one flew right under the brisge - got the front and rear views ! by macdangerous (Tue 11th Feb 2020 7:20pm)

  • The landlord is also legally required to provide you with a Prescribed Information form which states where the deposit is held and how much. If he hasn't done so, you've got another string to your bow. You could cost your landlord a lot of money if he messes you about. Especially if he's got another 15 properties. PM me if you like. by macdangerous (Wed 1st Apr 2020 7:24pm)
  • I used to work at Clyde - they kept recordings of all the shows up in the attic, thousands of hours of them. Might still be there - worth an ask. They might even do a wee feature about it, it was a very popular show in its time. by macdangerous (Mon 1st Jun 2020 11:22am)
  • There's another side to that though - your manager must have a fair amount of faith in you to trust you get what I suppose is) an important piece of work completed to deadline. Watch what happens when interesting projects come in or when opportunities to advance crop-up. If he/she's a decent manager you'll get your reward. If not, then it's time to look for something better. by macdangerous (Sat 4th Jul 2020 1:54pm)

  • The dug gangs happened when there was a bitch in heat. Given the amount of loose dugs roaming the streets, that was pretty common. I was brought up in Maryhill, but all my cousins lived in Easterhouse so I spent a lot of time there - it was like a different town entirely, and I suppose it was given the population. • Yep, an Easterhoose egg was a bit of cheese wrapped up in a slice of pan, then squeezed into an egg shape. Once the chippy had deep-fried it, they would roll it in salt or dip it in the pickled onion vinegar (if you were quoted).. by macdangerous (Thu 27th Aug 2020 10:18pm)

  • Really can't believe this. Most people seem to think CABs are government funded with full-time paid staff. In reality, the CABs are independent & locally-funded, with many services provided by trained volunteers. They're already under ridiculous pressure at the current funding level. I'm just hoping the council have made this announcement in order to raise public awareness and support for the CABs, thus giving themselves a bit of leverage in trying to seek emergency funding from the SG. by macdangerous (Sun 30th Aug 2020 2:34pm)
  • Sorry if I wasn't clear - I'm totally appalled. I've been a volunteer & employee in the past, I know how bad it is. It always disturbed me how many people regarded CAB as a government agency staffed by civil servants. My remarks about the council's statement was just me clutching at straws. by macdangerous (Sun 30th Aug 2020 2:49pm)

  • Good to hear you saying that but I thought the species had gone down in recent years. Haven't seen a cormorant/shag for a while and very few ducks of late. A few years since the kingfishers were about as well. by macdangerous (Sat 17th Oct 2020 4:41pm)

  • When I was a kid we used to catch loads of wee frogs with a fishing net in the pond at Springburn Park. BUT...we lived in a multi-storey (8th floor) and my Mum wouldn't have them in the house. Came home one day with a jam jar full which I was promptly told to put out on the balcony. Next morning they had all leapt through the railings to their splattery death 80 feet below. Must have been at least 50 of them. I carry the guilt with me to this day. by macdangerous (Tue 20th Oct 2020 6:43pm)

  • You're boss must have thought a lot of your presentation or he wouldn't be excited telling you this. He'll only be letting you do it because it will reflect well on him. If there was anything dubious about your presentation he would have said you're getting to do it but maybe you could work on... Brownie points for you - enjoy it (and you've already had a rehearsal). by macdangerous (Tue 26th Jan 2021 11:31am)

  • Lots of old folk who've finally settled down to using lap-tops over the years have got another problem touch screens. They can get by ok on a laptop but there's an additional level of dexterity needed with a phone which causes problems. OT I know but lots of younger folks don't realise this. by macdangerous (Thu 28th Jan 2021 6:40pm)

  • Can't be beat! Lived in Italy for a few years, ended up with a life-long addiction.. by macdangerous (Sun 7th Feb 2021 12:34pm)
  • Don't think that's it though. People in Glasgow talk to strangers in a way that's quite unusual - you can be waiting at a bus stop and the wee wifie next to you will give you her life story without any prompting. I've worked in most of the major cities in the UK and stayed in quite a few both here and abroad. That tendency to treat folk as OK until proved otherwise is pretty unusual IMHO. by macdangerous (Thu 18th Feb 2021 7:25pm)

  • Windsor Terrace is pretty close to the area I wouldn't be too happy about. I'd say N Woodside Rd is fine. Really handy place for shops, city centre, west end, kelvingrove Pk. by macdangerous (Tue 2nd Mar 2021 5:09pm)
  • Just for clarity - N Woodside Rd west of Maryhill Rd is fine, once you cross it, the area becomes a bit more of a gamble. by macdangerous (Tue 2nd Mar 2021 5:34pm)

  • We're talking about Bridgeton here - Neighbourhood Watch signs would act like magnets to attract wee bams on the wind-up. Or worse.. by macdangerous (Wed 17th Mar 2021 2:19pm)
  • Well, you could be right. I was just remembering that, as a wee guy, if someone gave us a hard time, you could guarantee that they became the target of our mischief (!) for the a while - until someone else caught our attention. by macdangerous (Thu 18th Mar 2021 9:51am)
  • Woah - is there a colleague you can discuss this with? It could be that you're misunderstanding what they want you to do/achieve. You might be working your socks off but focusing on the wrong objectives. Honestly, I'd go back to the boss, explain that you're shocked (and disappointed) but you've had a think about it and would like to talk it through for clarification. It might make all the difference. by macdangerous (Thu 18th Mar 2021 11:44am)
  • Yeah that sounds tough. I only mentioned this because (as an old guy) I've seen this happen so many times - people getting stuck-in with loads of enthusiasm but they're not actually doing what they were brought in to do. I guess you could ask him what level of results would be needed to make your post worthwhile then you could decide whether you think it's viable or not. Best of luck! by macdangerous (Thu 18th Mar 2021 12:48pm)
  • That's really decent. I'll PM you, cheers! by macdangerous (Thu 18th Mar 2021 2:34pm)
  • Interesting that - I thought it would have been the opposite. by macdangerous (Thu 18th Mar 2021 3:50pm)
  • Ah well, now you've got the motivation to find something better. Nae luck at all.... by macdangerous (Thu 18th Mar 2021 11:01pm)
  • A few years ago was in a private let which was re-possessed as landlord hadn't paid mortgage. Spoke to social work and explained was about to be made homeless - they couldn't do anything but did give me a letter confirming the circumstances. This was enough to get me accepted by GHA as 'vulnerable' which meant I could 'bid' for housing. Got a nice wee flat after a few weeks. Might still be worth trying - no misrepresentation at all. by macdangerous (Mon 22nd Mar 2021 11:58am)

  • Get it on eBay! by macdangerous (Wed 24th Mar 2021 11:17am)
  • Totally agree about working for free or 'experience' but there are other groups of people with different motivations. Lonely people just looking for an opportunity meet other folks, pensioners (like myself) looking for a reason to get out of the house and do something. Lots of folk had a great time volunteering during the Commonwealth Games (although the weather definitely helped). Can't imagine any MSPs would actually take a stance over 'free labour' but you never know. by macdangerous (Wed 24th Mar 2021 7:20pm)
  • Depending on what you want to do, inflatables can be decent. If you just want to go for a paddle about Loch Lomond they're fine. Cheap, stable, easy to transport. PS Breadmaker doing fine, now on loaf 3. Guess IOU :-) by macdangerous (Sun 28th Mar 2021 10:02pm)
  • Well, great for that. The fact that you can deflate them, stuff them in the bag and throw it into the back of a car is a serious plus. Only drawback is that they're a bit susceptible to side-winds which makes paddling hard(er) work at times. Dead easy to handle, very stable. by macdangerous (Mon 29th Mar 2021 9:52am)
  • Ben Cruachan Turbine Hall is BIG. by macdangerous (Mon 29th Mar 2021 7:13pm)
  • I'd like to know the answer to that too - I've lived elsewhere with four bins: glass & metal, paper & cardboard, plastic (all sorts), everything else. If we do the initial sifting, why can't the council refine the sorting at bulk level? Genuine question, I'm not just having a moan. by macdangerous (Wed 31st Mar 2021 11:13am)

  • If you're making mistakes because you're not sure of what you're doing you should speak to your boss. Ask for more training or support - chances are they'll be happy enough to help you. They'll certainly be happier that you've come to them to sort it out rather than trying to hide it or muddle through. by macdangerous (Sat 17th Apr 2021 11:26am)
  • Met a Hughina before. She was lovely too... by macdangerous (Fri 23rd Apr 2021 4:02pm)
  • Same - I went freelance for a while as the money was so good. Thought I'd work half the hours for the same money but that's not the way it goes. I was too scared to knock anything back and ended up working flat-out constantly. Stuck it for a year and then got another staff job. It's not for everybody.... by macdangerous (Fri 23rd Apr 2021 4:00pm)
  • Yep - I didn't have the confidence to knock back work even though I was really busy. When there's not much in the diary for next month it's easy to say yes to everything. Lots of mates have done it quite happily - guess I just wasn't cut out for that type of insecurity (and I'm lazy) by macdangerous (Fri 23rd Apr 2021 5:30pm)
  • They were traditionally started by someone who needed a bit of cash urgently. Normally the organiser got the first turn. Other people used them for holiday money or christmas etc. You drew your turn out of a hat then had the option of swapping with others to get a turn which paid out at a time that suited you. Very popular in factories etc where people knew each other well and predominantly run by women. Were also the cause of great local scandal - 'Agnes has left her man and ran away wi the minoj money'. by macdangerous (Mon 26th Apr 2021 12:50pm)
  • If you can find an experienced mushroom forager to take you out you'll learn much more than you can from books. You don't need to know every mushroom - just the ones that are good to eat. Even if you only know a few species, you can have a good day. Good tip I picked up abroad - when picking mushrooms, use a basket. That way the spores can spread. It's mandatory in Italian National Parks. by macdangerous (Mon 3rd May 2021 1:14pm)

  • Maybe this hits the nail on the head. Living in a different culture to your own is fun & exciting -up to a point. I lived abroad for a few years & absolutely loved soaking up the differences in culture but eventually I realised that I could never be 'Italian' even though I could have taken out citizenship. Be yourself & you'll find like-minded people. Might take a while, but they will be there. And remember, as someone said above, these are strange times. by macdangerous (Thu 20th May 2021 12:07pm)
  • That's really interesting - what type of 'English' do you have in mind? I taught English to professional users(pilots, lawyers, architects etc) in Italy and the school deliberately brought in Scottish, Irish, South African & Australian coaches to help students familiarise themselves with different accents although we taught RP/business English. It was widely accepted that native English speakers were the most difficult to understand, simply because of regional accents. by macdangerous (Sat 22nd May 2021 7:34pm)

  • Haha - my next door neighbour has a full-throttle water pistol he uses for revenge. A couple of years ago the housing association hired a hawk man for a day and he worked wonders. Also gave the local kids a bit of a thrill getting up close to a giant hawk (no idea what kind). by macdangerous (Wed 14th Jul 2021 2:57pm)
  • Housing Assoc had a guy up on the roofs collecting all the eggs before they hatched. Not sure about the legality of that but it worked and kept them away the next year too. by macdangerous (Wed 14th Jul 2021 3:00pm)
  • Think it would probably cost a good few quid - the guy turned up with a van & the hawk. He hung about all day, bringing the hawk out of the van a few times - it just sat on the grass. It was pretty impressive looking but didn't actually do anything. It caused absolute chaos with the seagulls though, complete panic. Maybe worth it just for the entertainment value. I think the timing was important (just when the seagulls were settling in to nest). Didn't have any problem with them that summer. by macdangerous (Wed 14th Jul 2021 8:06pm)
  • Don't think it's anything as bad as it used to be - I've seen cormorants fishing there. I was in the rowing club at school (70s) and at that time anyone who fell in (it happened..) were taken to hospital to have their stomach pumped. by macdangerous (Wed 21st Jul 2021 5:35pm)

  • Sounds good. 120 is at the top of the hill, separate from the other three. It's pretty sound I think - just need to check-out what the actual landing is like.Quite a lot of refugees in that block and they tend to be pretty good neighbours. Good luck. by macdangerous (Tue 3rd Aug 2021 9:06am)
  • Looking through this thread there are comments from people who've had good and bad experiences but (mostly) life's what you make it. The Wyndford has quite a reputation but it's not the madhouse some people make it out to be. There are artists, film-makers, musicians & designers living here. It's great for transport links, handy for the west end & the parks. There are actually a couple of well decent pubs nearby. u/smcsleazy has got it right below - go and have a look. • Keep in mind that the brother and son may be grateful to have a chat with you. Anyone providing round the clock care has little or no time to think about anything beyond except the person they're caring for and quite likely, they won't even have considered the impact on yourself. If you contact any of the agencies on their behalf may be doing them a favour as they probably don't have enough time or energy to do it themselves. Sadly, there's not an awful lot of practical help available but every little helps. I went through years of this with my mother and the isolation was desperate at times. You're a kind person for showing so much concern. by macdangerous (Mon 11th Oct 2021 11:01am)

Told them I didn't speak Italian to get them to go away but they produced a wee book which seemed to have phrases in every language - do you speak English? Spanish? German? Stumped them when I told them no, only Scottish. by macdangerous (Tue 12th Oct 2021 11:39am)
  • I had (painful) physio for a year after I messed up my knee but the guys were brilliant. They promised they could get me back climbing again so I worked hard at it. I was going a couple of times a week and got to know them well enough to share their carry-out curries if I went on a Friday. In the end they decided I could be useful as an example to other patients since most people chucked it halfway through - it was really tedious as well as painful, so not really surprising. Every now and then they'd bring a new patient for me to encourage. The best thing was that they stopped making formal appointments for me and just let me use the gym and equipment whenever I wanted. And they got me climbing again as promised. Go the GGHB physios! by macdangerous (Tue 12th Oct 2021 12:02pm)

Might not be a bad idea to speak to a couple of the established clubs to see if you can run 'in association' with them. I'd certainly have a beer or two with them. • Good to read this kind of thinking. I've got a bit of a bee in my bonnet about the emphasis on household recycling vs corporate & manufacturers' responsibility but there's no doubt the place is a mess. Used to live in a town where everybody had four re-cycling bins (paper & cardboard, glass & metal, plastics, and organic. The council collected the bins (one type each night), then re-sorted them into what was recyclable or not. At the end of the year they sent out the results to householders including the amount deducted from your bill due to income from re-cycling. It was really easy and everybody took part. They also had 'eco-islands' dotted around the town where you could leave larger items. People were encouraged to visit and take home anything they fancied - I got a lovely old standard lamp. • Careful here though - you should make sure the council send you a new (updated) bill. Was in this situation a few years ago, made a late payment to the council, not knowing that it had to be passed to Scott & Co. They insisted I make payment to them (or they would take me to court) and then sort it out with the council. And of course it proved impossible to get the council to repay the double payment. £100 down the drain.. by macdangerous (Wed 22nd Dec 2021 12:59pm)

  • CAB have their own (massive) info database which volunteers are trained to use. If they can't get the info you need they will refer you to a specialist advice provider (Shelter for housing info etc). You can get access to most of that through the CAB website. I volunteered with them for a year or so - most of the advisers are volunteers, but they have access to paid supervisors if they get stuck though. A lot of the work is actually sign-posting to specialists so maybe better thinking of CAB as a starting point. by macdangerous (Sat 30th Apr 2022 3:53pm)

  • Get a wee magnet and move it across the wall - with a bit of luck you'll find the nailheads on the studding. Once you've found one, you'll be able to work out where the rest are and check using the magnets. This works - I've done it before. by macdangerous (Mon 29th Aug 2022 6:54pm)
  • That's a hellish job mate, I've done it before. I'd imagine anyone doing it for you would be charging quite a bit. by macdangerous (Mon 29th Aug 2022 7:38pm)
  • Just letting the agents know you're aware of the First Tier Tribunal might get a response - they don't want to have to spend time gathering evidence and appearing before the tribunal. by macdangerous (Mon 29th Aug 2022 7:35pm)

  • Nottingham's not exactly quiet though is it?. Think Mansfield and you'll have an idea of what you'll be getting into. You'll be fine mate. by macdangerous (Wed 31st Aug 2022 9:06am)
  • Wee bit of a hill there though... by macdangerous (Wed 14th Sep 2022 10:58pm)

  • If any bare metal is showing, it's very easy to make things much worse with a DIY job. Get a bodyshop to have a look at it (please!). Source: used to be a professional car-sprayer. by macdangerous (Tue 18th Oct 2022 9:52am)
  • They all get sent to the same elocution coaches to master 'glottal compression'. That produces the archetypal 'DJ' voice. True. by macdangerous (Thu 17th Nov 2022 11:09pm)
  • Just a convention I think - station bosses want DJs to sound like the previous ones because that's what people expect. Production staff used to sit around practising the voice hoping they'd get a stand-in shift if a presenter called in sick. by macdangerous (Sat 19th Nov 2022 10:57am)
  • In the days before privatisation they had timekeepers at critical point along the route who had the power to sort this out. They'd re-order the buses or turn them short of the terminus to get them back to the timetable. Don't think I've ever seen First do this. by macdangerous (Sun 4th Dec 2022 12:10pm)
  • Had a Physics teacher who would call you out to complete calculations on the board. If you couldn't complete it correctly you got belted. Then the next kid would have a go and get belted. He routinely belted the whole class over a double period. Sadistic bastard. Got an A for Physics right enough... by macdangerous (Sun 12th Feb 2023 11:34pm)
  • Wish they'd clamp all the selfish clowns who park on the pavement. How come so many people have decided that this is acceptable? I know folk have to park their cars somewhere but too many seem to have given up looking for a proper parking place and just dump their cars wherever they like these days. by macdangerous (Tue 5th Sep 2023 11:51am)
  • Dozens of them roosting in the Wyndford for the last few weeks. You don't see them much during the day but early morning as they fly-off and early evening when they return you can't miss them. by macdangerous (Fri 27th Oct 2023 12:46pm)
  • My mate works in the west end (Gibson St). He parks his car outside his work every day, gets a ticket once a week and reckons that's cheaper than parking costs would be. by macdangerous (Sat 18th Nov 2023 10:13pm)
  • Thanks for the advice folks. Owner found, wee dog returned. Everybody happy :) by macdangerous (Wed 29th Nov 2023 11:56am)
