  • This is what I don't understand. With the Tories essentially gone from Scotland, it's basically just a big bag of tax revenue for the Tories that they dont have to care about because they don't need the seats. So they'll defund anything they can up here and not let the Scots leave. There is no agreement that the UK government have to grant an independence referendum because the SNP have 55 MPs. And we can talk glibly about revolution and building a wall as much as we like, the reality is it Scotland isn't going to have a war, even if their was the energy to form a physical uprising it would be quickly squashed by UK forces. Is there some route out of the union I'm not seeing? by FireFingers1992 (Fri 13th Dec 2019 11:02am)
  • There is a lovely 8 mile walk from Balloch to Hellensburgh and you can get the train back via Glasgow. Goes up and over, feels nice and explore-y without really much chance of getting lost. Recommended. by FireFingers1992 (Thu 19th Dec 2019 1:43pm)
  • Aye, same as the one on Byres Road. I'm West End, but I'm no "standing in the rain for an hour for cheese" level of West End. Went to Waitrose instead. by FireFingers1992 (Mon 23rd Dec 2019 10:42pm)

  • Cheddar and Mozzarella mostly, but being the West End twats that we are we had a bit of comte and prima donna in that we used sparingly. Was lush. The mozzarella worked very well making it very creamy. by FireFingers1992 (Wed 15th Apr 2020 10:31pm)

  • Yep, gone for now. Nico said in a recent live stream they hoped to bring Home by Nico back permanently later this year, which would be great. Got it twice during lock down and it was cracking, by FireFingers1992 (Fri 10th Jul 2020 9:49pm)
  • No expert, but the tension in piano strings is a hell of a lot more than a violin, and violinist and trained to loosen them between playing sessions unlike pianos. All the pressure on the frame is eventually gonna make it sad. But that's just a guess. by FireFingers1992 (Sun 26th Jul 2020 11:00pm)
  • Could do a chunk of the classic "West Highland Way". You don't say how far or how long you are going for, but other than around Loch Lomond you can wild camp where ever and there is a lot of stream for water etc. by FireFingers1992 (Mon 27th Jul 2020 2:18pm)
  • Maryhill Tesco isn't on stilts for that. The old line actually runs right underneath the site, through a tunnel. The tunnel mouth is still easily visible on the south side. by FireFingers1992 (Fri 14th Aug 2020 11:02pm)

  • Mine arrived at the testing place on a Sunday, and took till Wednesday evening. So could be four days? Took seven days from ordering To result, which I thought was too long really as it meant any contact tracing would have been damn near pointless. by FireFingers1992 (Wed 2nd Sep 2020 5:56pm)
  • Only allowed to meet up in groups of three households, been that way for months. This gal pal party is four. So it does break the law. by FireFingers1992 (Sun 6th Sep 2020 1:00pm)
  • Do prebook if you can, as it can fill up, although maybe not with Covid going round. by FireFingers1992 (Sun 6th Sep 2020 5:01pm)
  • I think the buses stop stopping at the airport when the flights aren't meant to be running, so there is a gap in the middle of the night. But Edinburgh to Glasgow proper keeps running all through the night, used to take it for work. The 3am bus from Edinburgh to Glasgow is fucking amazing. Early in the week it'll be a handful of tired people essentially having a sleepover, but on a Friday night... pissed up Glaswegians all wanting to get home, the things you see... Remember a bus driver only letting a few people on at Haymarket cos he was full, and a guy wasn't being let on, so he pulls out his phone to film it like waiting an hour for a bus is some great oppression, says he won't go etc. Then big guy gets up from the back, walks down the bus, smacks the guys phone out his hand and the open door and goes "Go get your fucking phone". Wee man goes to get his phone, big man goes "shut the door and drive" and we jetted off into the night. by FireFingers1992 (Sun 6th Sep 2020 5:10pm)
  • Just shop somewhere else, all the supermarkets have slots these days (at least in Maryhill). Flatmate got symptoms so had to isolate and test and so got a Morrisons one, all arrived fine and only a couple of quid delivered to the 3rd floor of a tenement (poor bastard). Currently in France so will have to isolate and we're gonna get one big shop per week. It feels overly cautious, given the Covid rates in the town I'm in compared to back home along with the plane only having about 20 people on it, but better safe than sorry. by FireFingers1992 (Sat 12th Sep 2020 3:13pm)
  • So they can fuck them over later. No contract means they can not give them the rights they deserve with far as notice to evict etc. by FireFingers1992 (Sun 13th Sep 2020 12:18pm)
  • All money donated is going to the charity, the company that owns the spitfire is paying for the fuel, maintenance etc. by FireFingers1992 (Thu 17th Sep 2020 8:18am)
  • Yeah and really their are limits. Family of five having two grandparents over for tea, no one is calling the cops. 30 people having a piss up at 2am... that's a paddling. by FireFingers1992 (Sun 27th Sep 2020 12:23pm)

  • Safe, yes. And they can even serve you an evening meal. No booze though. by FireFingers1992 (Wed 7th Oct 2020 5:58pm)
  • You'd just threaten a permanently ban on their liquor license for both the company and the individual. No one is gonna fuck with that to make 50 quid on some stella. by FireFingers1992 (Wed 7th Oct 2020 5:58pm)
  • Theoretically yes, but employer contributions are now at what, 60%? So they have to pay 60% of the wages with zero money coming in bar a couple of grand hopefully from central government, along with rent, bills, food they now have to throw out, orders that had been placed and can't be cancelled for food that'll have also gone off before they can reopen... by FireFingers1992 (Wed 7th Oct 2020 5:56pm)
  • Ah yes, had forgotten that the employee can get a 20% paycut to suck on. by FireFingers1992 (Wed 7th Oct 2020 7:53pm)
  • Employers could always top it up to the full wage. But as I said, I had forgotten they had a 20% paycut to suck on. by FireFingers1992 (Wed 7th Oct 2020 8:01pm)
  • Hotels weren't told to close today, only restriction is they can only serve food to residents and no booze. So book away for a dry holiday. by FireFingers1992 (Wed 7th Oct 2020 9:03pm)
  • They've made 40 million pounds available. Sounds like a lot right? But Scotland has about 3,000 pubs and about 18,000 restaurants. You divide that up that's already less than two grand each for 16 days of massively or completely reduced revenue. Then the other newly locked down places need considerations: bingo halls, bowling alleys, snooker clubs, outdoor live events all got told to shut up shop today. But they said they'll get feedback to guid how it is spent, but that means some places will receive less than 2 grand for the others to receive more... . And when all that is said and done, if they are getting feedback etc how long will it take for the money to actually reach the bank accounts of those affected. They've been shut for a third of the year already, some can't wait weeks when the landlord and the energy provider and the food wholesale and the council all want their money. I recognise it is not their fault, the Scottish government don't control the UK budget etc, but the money falls massively short of what they want to do, that's just a fact. by FireFingers1992 (Wed 7th Oct 2020 11:51pm)
  • Agreed. It's daft. And restaurants take reservations to avoid crushes, making sure tables are clean etc, cafes are so much more hectic than a restaurant. Ban alcohol sale, anyone caught selling on the sly has their alcohol license removed permanently. by FireFingers1992 (Sat 10th Oct 2020 2:59pm)
  • They could limit seating times. And are we going to see a high turnover or will people just use the "cafe" as a "resataurant". by FireFingers1992 (Sat 10th Oct 2020 2:57pm)
  • If the problem is booze then ban booze. Don't ban seated food establishments who are dangling by a thread. Proper throwing the baby out with the bathwater stuff. by FireFingers1992 (Sat 10th Oct 2020 3:01pm)
  • Your previous responses here are about booze, now it is about time... At any rate you could limit people's seating time (a lot easier when you usee reservations like a restaurant does than cafes where you can sit all day), you could let restaurants run cafe style menus. Take Eusebi's Deli by Kelvingrove Park. A restaurant now shut but has a deli counter and could easily run as such but can't due to rush and ill thought out legislation. You get notified via contact tracing apps for a 15 minute contact. So unless you limit time to below 15 minutes from queue joining to leaving then the risk is regarded as the same by our current system. by FireFingers1992 (Sat 10th Oct 2020 3:10pm)
  • Got virgin fibre in Maryhill. Just run a speed test: 105 down, but only 9 up. by FireFingers1992 (Sun 11th Oct 2020 10:36pm)
  • It's a cafe of wheels sort of, so can't see it being an issue. by FireFingers1992 (Fri 16th Oct 2020 12:30am)
  • Yep, I live 5 mins from there and it is defo them programming the lighting for Glas Glow. by FireFingers1992 (Thu 22nd Oct 2020 9:54pm)
  • Train to Balloch for the bottom part. But cycling or even hiking along the canal and then up the river from Dumbarton is a nice way to spend the day. But Balmaha is a much nicer place than Balloch so I’d train to Balloch then bus to Balmaha. But if you want to go more remote and have more time, and you are going in the next few days, get the train or the bus up to Ardlui, and then the wee ferry across to the other side of the loch for a peaceful walk: https://ardlui.com/hotel/#ferry Ferry finishes on the 8th, restarts next year. by FireFingers1992 (Wed 4th Nov 2020 11:20pm)
  • Great to see it's improved, had to wait a week back in August from ordering to result. Quick testing is only way out of this hellscape. by FireFingers1992 (Fri 6th Nov 2020 10:46am)
  • Aye. My mum's widowed, lives alone, retired NHS worker and all her friends have someone else to support bubble with. I don't do anything exciting, so visited her 3 times since lockdown 1 began. I am doing it for healthcare reasons, which has always been permitted, but that is about her mental health. She was very social, belong to a lot of groups and loved visiting museums etc, so has had a lot of a her life cut off. Her mental health slowly drops in the gaps between visits, dread to think how she'd be if I hadn't visited. I'll mask up, wash my hands, do bugger all shopping, live on unemployment benefit, but letting my mother lose it ain't happening. by FireFingers1992 (Tue 17th Nov 2020 6:06pm)
  • We're already in an extended household with the flatmate's brother who does need company too (split with their partner in between lockdown and is living on their own for first time in years). by FireFingers1992 (Tue 17th Nov 2020 8:05pm)
  • Never had salt and chilli chips arrive as good and as crisp as Lemon Tree managed. Spectacular. by FireFingers1992 (Wed 18th Nov 2020 12:41pm)
  • My favs are: Ashoka for curry, El Perro Negro for burgers (Bread Meats Bread a close second), Lemon Tree for chinese, Absurd Bird for buttermilk chicken (the chicken and waffles are top notch). For something a bit different, Broken Clock Cafe is maybe the best patisserie in the country so we'd have a normal tea but treat ourselves to an expensive wee cafe for afters. Collection only due to tier 4 but a great local business to support. by FireFingers1992 (Wed 18th Nov 2020 12:45pm)
  • Been shut a while now, don't think it is reopening. by FireFingers1992 (Wed 18th Nov 2020 6:03pm)
  • ... I had not clocked that! Wonder why I normally like restaurant pizzas thin but takeaways thick, now I know! by FireFingers1992 (Wed 18th Nov 2020 6:05pm)
  • Braehead shopping centre is also technically over the border, so bringing the tree back would be an act of smuggling... by FireFingers1992 (Wed 18th Nov 2020 10:33pm)
  • Write to your councillors. I complained several times about missed bins. Message the councillors a few times as it was gone in less than a week. Find their email address is withthis: [https://www.glasgow.gov.uk/councillorsandcommittees/addressSearch.asp](https://www.glasgow.gov.uk/councillorsandcommittees/addressSearch.asp) by FireFingers1992 (Tue 12th Jan 2021 4:43pm)
  • Had this issue since before Christmas (though ours is more frequent collection normally). Got bored of saying you missed it again, emailed my council members. Took another missed collection and a second email to them but I was awoken this morning the sound of of beeping bin lorries. Never have I been more happy for them to wake me up. You can find out your councillors here : [https://www.glasgow.gov.uk/councillorsandcommittees/addressSearch.asp](https://www.glasgow.gov.uk/councillorsandcommittees/addressSearch.asp) by FireFingers1992 (Tue 12th Jan 2021 4:46pm)
  • Stock informer helped me get mine back in April when demand was sky high. by FireFingers1992 (Wed 13th Jan 2021 9:04pm)
  • Hi there, I live up near the Botanics. We walk up to Ruchill Park which has cracking views of the Campsies from a few points. Along the river to Dawsholm Park is a nice one, would be about 45 minutes to an hour to get there. If you want to make a trip out of it, you can hike all along the Kelvin Walkway and then the Allander Walkway and you get to Milngavie which is a decent "target". The canal also provides some good options. You could head East or follow it down to Bowling and the Clyde, hell if you keep going you could walk all the way to Loch Lomond. Or you could cross the Clyde and wander round the boundary of Crookston Castle, a 1600s castle in the middle of housing. by FireFingers1992 (Fri 26th Feb 2021 6:59pm)
  • It's on your medical record, the card is just a reminder. So don't worry, it is logged and will be available for future stuff like going to other countries that need proog of vaccination. by FireFingers1992 (Fri 5th Mar 2021 10:29pm)
  • If they can get the vaccine numbers back on track then sure. Unfortunately, they are now behind targets meaning me (at 29) won't get vaccinated until late July/early August. [https://www.omnicalculator.com/health/vaccine-queue-scotland](https://www.omnicalculator.com/health/vaccine-queue-scotland) Hopefully they can ramp it up, but work wants me back and working on reopening day interacting with a lot of people which I'd rather be vaccinated for. by FireFingers1992 (Fri 5th Mar 2021 10:28pm)
  • Well hopefully. This isn't some anti-SNP thing. There has been a slow down, not there fault but it has slowed and as I said I hope it picks up but we've seen international moves hampering vaccine distribution (see current Italy/Australia problems). Proof of the pudding is in the eating and all that, I'll buy you a pint if I get vaccinated in May as scheduled, cos I'll hopefully able to go to a damn pub. by FireFingers1992 (Fri 5th Mar 2021 11:12pm)
  • The council really doe5snt seem to want to do anything about rubbish. Overflowing public bins, missed domestic collections, new schedules with less pick ups. There is so much rubbish in the streets these days. People aren't littering more, possibly less with no late night drinking or need for a quick meal deal in the park whilst at work. The council has just heavily scaled back collecting rubbish. They really need to do something about it. We aren't allowed out the city, the least they can do is make it a clean place to be. by FireFingers1992 (Mon 15th Mar 2021 11:41am)
  • Problem is when the rubbish builds it causes more people to not give a fuck and drop stuff. "The ground is covered in shite, may as well peg this can there too". It's fucked up, and obviously, those people are still dicks, but it just creates a vicious cycle. by FireFingers1992 (Tue 23rd Mar 2021 12:09am)
  • Wouldn't want to sit under those mate, the amount of rubbish under them is shocking at the moment. by FireFingers1992 (Tue 23rd Mar 2021 10:07pm)
  • I think it is a downward spiral. The council cut back the bin collections, so public bins and domestic ones occasionally overflowed. This blew around in the wind and created a small amount. Then a minority saw that there was already litter on the ground and thought "fuck it, might as well chuck my crap with the others" and it has gone around in a vicious cycle. Both groups are too blame. There needs to be an effort to clean the area, but also to sort out the council side and attempt to reeducate the litterers. by FireFingers1992 (Wed 24th Mar 2021 1:44pm)
  • They do sell banjos there, and there was someone in their workshop when I walked past today, so definitely worth a shout I reckon. by FireFingers1992 (Thu 25th Mar 2021 8:57pm)
  • The shop isn’t, but I suspect the workshop is for repairs etc. Drop them an email. by FireFingers1992 (Fri 26th Mar 2021 9:07am)
  • Sharing makes so much of a difference. I pay £475 as does my flatmate and we've got a comfy spacious 2 bed overlooking the Kelvin, not far from the botanics. Comfy, clean, new bathroom put in before we moved in, separate sitting room and kitchen. £475 would only get you a compact hole unless you went further out sadly. by FireFingers1992 (Tue 30th Mar 2021 9:32pm)
  • Aye. Well more of a conversion of the roof space in the 70s-ish. Basically took the front room of one of the flats on the 3rd floor and made that in to a communal space with new stairs to get up to a "new" 4th floor with some extended window bits put on. Still have good ceiling height, thick walls etc that you'd expect from a tenement. by FireFingers1992 (Tue 30th Mar 2021 11:09pm)
  • Lockdown is doing my nut today. Think I'm right in saying the last time we were allowed to travel out of the city was the end of October. Five months ago. The only way I'd stayed even slightly healthy before was hill walking and been penned into the city for nearly half a year is really getting to me. Won't be allowed out until pubs are open in another 4 bastard weeks. How is me sitting masked up on a bus for half an hour as dangerous as a load of guys getting leathered? by FireFingers1992 (Wed 31st Mar 2021 10:41pm)
  • Agreed on delivery. Don't bother on a Friday or Saturday night. But if you are ordering earlier in the week they are normally fine and the food is banging. by FireFingers1992 (Thu 1st Apr 2021 12:07am)
  • Elderly cunts next door having a garden party it seems. The pandemic has made me unemployed, we shut down the economy to protect them, and they flout the rules. Fucking arseholes. by FireFingers1992 (Fri 2nd Apr 2021 8:15pm)
  • Don’t get the shite builders our landlord got. No clue who they were but they didn’t use bathroom paint so it is all peeling off after 6 months. They also got paint all over the window handles, painted the window frame so it doesn’t open properly, didn’t install a mirror, broke the blind, built a flat shelf into the shower which just catches water to turn to mould unless you dry it out every day, didn’t install the lights properly so moths get the bulbs from the attic and die so we share our bathroom with about 8 dead moths... get quotes, but never go for the cheapest. by FireFingers1992 (Sat 3rd Apr 2021 9:51pm)
  • Walking up the River Kelvin to Dawsholm is lovely. Probably takes about 40 minutes form Kelvinbridge subway. by FireFingers1992 (Sat 10th Apr 2021 10:03am)
  • Yeah we didn't really use Ruchill Park until lockdown one. Kelvingrove and the Botanics would be heaving, but we'd head up to Ruchill and have loads of space to chill. We'd often bring our lunch with us. The view from the flatpole is great, and we even went sledging there when it snowed a couple of months back. by FireFingers1992 (Sat 10th Apr 2021 10:02am)
  • Aye. If they don't do this people will moan about how England is ahead and the Tories would let us have stuff etc. If they do do this, people say she is only doing it for political reasons. Fucking daft. by FireFingers1992 (Tue 13th Apr 2021 7:37pm)

Flat has subsidence, the shower room was redone by cowboys before we arrived and they are blaming us, communication takes an age when I think the person who actually owns the flat seems to get stuff done quickly once the message gets through to them. by FireFingers1992 (Thu 15th Apr 2021 8:31pm)

  • Kelvingrove was fantastic on Tuesday. Very quiet, so you got to really look at stuff, and they have definitely changed some things up in there. No shops or cafe as yet, which was a shame as I wanted a way to give them more money than the donation, but still! by FireFingers1992 (Sat 1st May 2021 9:49pm)

  • Aye that buggered me too. Had to travel down to London today for work, West Coast cut in two places with buses replacing, and strike screwed going via Edinburgh. Fortunately, hotels are cheap right now so went through to Edinburgh yesterday and stayed in a Premier Inn hub for £35 quid. Was nice to not be sleeping in my flat for a change. by FireFingers1992 (Sun 2nd May 2021 11:25pm)
  • Anyone know how the vaccine rollout is going in Glasgow? Really getting a hankering for some delicious anti-bodies, but can't find what age they've reached or anything online. by FireFingers1992 (Fri 7th May 2021 12:56pm)
  • Thanks. Still a way off for me then. If it hadn't all slowed down in March I'd have been jabbed by now, instead, I've got the prospect of six weeks working down in London with commuting and crowds and no protection bar a mask. Omnicalculator now predicting it could be July for me which given I'm 29 is a bit of a pisstake, and by late July I'm back working all over the UK with no chance of getting time off for the jab (work 6 day weeks, and it'll be a new gig so won't have a chance to train my cover until late September. Being self-employed means I can't afford for the vaccine to knock me out for a few days.) by FireFingers1992 (Fri 7th May 2021 1:35pm)
  • Aye, poor me if I catch Covid... Scotland it only averaging 68% of it's weekly planned vaccine schedule (and that's no Westminster's fault sadly, they are running at 96%). People have been telling me for months it's part of the plan and they'll catch up, but here we are, unvaccinated, when the schedule said I should be. And this is no a unionist thing, I voted Green. Just stating a fact that the roll out is not going as well up here as it is in England, and I don't fancy dying. And as for going South to work, I cannae get work up in Scotland as the government are sticking with 2m social distancing meaning events can only run at a completely unviable 10% capacity, where as in England they are allowing 1m so theatres end up running at about 50% so a show can actually make enough to run. Dead excited to back in work, less so of spending the whole time dodging covid. by FireFingers1992 (Fri 7th May 2021 6:28pm)
  • What you on about? When did I ever say I had a compromised immune system? You don't have to be to get affected by Covid ya fud. And how the fuck am I being selfish but wanting to get vaccinated? Not ahead of my time, when everyone has had it above me, but that's not gonna stop me wanting them to crack on with it, like they would have done by now if they'd managed to stick to their own schedule. The selfish ones would be the twats turning the vaccine down so we can stay in lockdown with plenty of infections going round. Fucking state of you, pal. by FireFingers1992 (Fri 7th May 2021 7:00pm)
  • Yes risk is quite low, I've just been very fortunate to have been sat inside for the year feeling safe, so bring out and about 6 days a week is bound to make me nervous. by FireFingers1992 (Fri 7th May 2021 8:00pm)
  • Not die from it? Sure, most likely. Not even have to be hospitalised? Most probably. Though if I was vaccinated the risk would a hell of a lot lower. And again, I'm self-employed. If I'm out for a week (or longer with long covid) then I'm not getting paid after a year of not getting paid. I do a very physical job, can be a 14 hour day of unloading arctics and lugging heavy equipment about. Long covid would bugger that. And yes, it is better for me to in London than Glasgow, exposure wise, even if I'm no fan of Londoners. Glasgow is at 27 cases per 100,000, London is at 19. But until it's zero, or I am vaccinated, I am going to worried about getting Covid. All I'm saying is, would quite like a vaccine now. by FireFingers1992 (Fri 7th May 2021 8:19pm)

  • Buses bar London are a fucking nightmare in the UK these days. Having it all one price, one company in London makes it so much easier to understand. At least before you got a shit ton of change and just got the driver to sort you out, now it is all apps and maps and prepurchasing and then the bus back is a different company so you need a new app, new ticket and arghhhh. by FireFingers1992 (Sun 9th May 2021 11:27am)
  • Interestingly they were going up for the same constituency, Kelvin. Pam Duncan-Glancy came third behind leader of the Greens Patrick Harvie. Its the Daily Mail's worst nightmare and I fucking love it. by FireFingers1992 (Sun 9th May 2021 11:24am)
  • Most Tories are incompetent and uncaring. They don't give a fuck about others. But Priti Patel actively wants people to suffer. If a run of the mill Tory MP was driving towards a crowd of proles, they might not lift their foot off the gas, but Priti would speed up and swerve into them for maximum damage. • Fair point, will amend. by FireFingers1992 (Sat 15th May 2021 5:42pm)
  • Eight. Months. Eight months Glasgow has been in special measures. Longer than any other city in the UK. We all have different tolerances to this. I'm glad you can withstand yet more restrictions, but some people have reach their limits. We aren't talking an all night rave with complosery coughing fit. If someone has obeyed the rules until now, and the government are offering no compensation to people for cancelled travel etc because of changing their minds 3 days before, then I have every sympathy with people saying "fuck this" and doing what they want. In the guy's post he says he's barely been out, looking after his vulnerable father. I can't say, if I were in his shoes, I wouldn't be taking myself off to the boarders, particularly if I got a negative LFT, and with over a week to self-isolate before he went anyway. Have some compassion for people and don't just call anyone who doesn't six more weeks of a winter a cunt. by FireFingers1992 (Sun 16th May 2021 1:07am)
  • But he did follow the rules. As did I. As did the vast majority. Collective punishment is banned by the geneva convention and all that (as we'd tell the teachers at school). We have acted in the common good, shutting our lives down for over a year now, whilst the vulnerable, the elderly, and now the middle aged have been getting jabbed. Hell the roll out has now reached the top end of the millennials! I lost my job to protect people, and thus my mental health and mental capacity collapsed. I'm glad you are able to keep going on with this, but every time a light appears at the end of the tunnel, only for it to be taken away, it drives more people to do what they feel they must to stay sane. If he is no danger to go out, then he can go out. He can take two clear steps I've already outlined to make it nearly impossible for him to get the virus between now and then, protecting others but also himself from losing the one thing he had been looking forward to. You inability to see the shades of grey between the antilockdown mob and someone who just needs some time away speaks volumes. Keep your head down /u/vileblood_, stay inside until you go, get some LFT (they're free), check yourself and then go enjoy your break. by FireFingers1992 (Sun 16th May 2021 1:58am)
  • Travel for work is 100% still permitted. by FireFingers1992 (Sun 16th May 2021 2:07am)
  • Only a week like it was only three weeks to flatten the curve 14 months ago... They have no idea how long it'll be until the figures go down again on the Southside, and given that they aren't changing from level 3 back to level 4 no additional rules are being put in place to stop the rising cases. So without changing restrictions, the only mitigation is the increased targeted vaccine response, which will take time to administer and then further time to take effect. Pretending it is going to be a week only gives people hope that will then be taken away, just like the move to tier 2 has. by FireFingers1992 (Sun 16th May 2021 2:04am)
  • The majority of Glaswegians couldn't give a fuck if it was rangers or celtic who won, the football fans act like everyone cares about it and see anyone who think that their embarrassing neanderthal shite isn't on as just supporters of the other team. So I'll say it again: Guys, we don't care who done a good football, we do care about the violence and vandalism and damage to the city. Fucking stop. by FireFingers1992 (Sun 16th May 2021 1:16pm)
  • You can travel for for health care reasons, been the same rule for the entire pandemic. No one will ask you for proof anyways, but yeah, you're still within the rules. by FireFingers1992 (Sun 16th May 2021 2:56pm)

  • Got myself a vaccine appointment for a a few Sundays from now (29). Problem being I'm working down in London on the Saturday and the Monday, and I can't change it to somewhere down South, so gonna have to whizz back and forth to get to it and the trains are buggered with engineering works. • Tried, it's totally different "NHS"s sadly, NHS Scotland and NHS England are pretty much seperate organisations. So I can only be jabbed in Scotland (even had a chat with my MP about it). Train up to Inverness is also beautiful, stop off at Aviemore for a steam train ride, or Pitlochery is a lovely place. Plenty of great walks to do, can totally recommend doing the West Highland Way in a week from Milngavie just outside Glasgow, up past Loch Lomond and Glen Coe to Fort William. by FireFingers1992 (Sun 22nd Aug 2021 11:52pm)

Had to have a lateral flow (I know they are pretty easy to fake but better than nothing), kept away from the front as did a lot of people so I was a good 1 meter from anyone else when watching, outdoors so good air circulation. I'm in the same boat. Second dose in England, and after hours on the phone, submitting info, waiting, I'm still nowhere. • Blimey modern booster killed my arm. No other major side effects but literally rolling onto it in the night woke me up. Also, random question. When using Scottish vaccine pass abroad, do they actually scan the QR code or is there no backend support for that sort of thing yet? I've now have had my first and third jab in Scotland, but my second was in England, and getting the second on my vaccine record has proven pretty much impossible, so my booster shows up as my second not third. • Was on the train back to Glesga today after four months away, and this lovely thing happened. Eastern European mum and her late teenage son are sat opposite a wee old Scottish guy. They get to talking and it turns out it is the mum and son's first trip to Scotland, so he says they have to have a whisky as the cross the border. They've never had one but the guy gets them a dram each and welcomes them to Scotland and it just made me remember why I made Scotland my home: cos the sound cunt to wank ratio is higher here than anywhere else in the UK. It's good to be home. by FireFingers1992 (Tue 9th Aug 2022 7:34pm)

  • Going against the grain here it seems, but a female friend of mine must have done a half dozen projects with them over the past few years and really loves working for them. When lockdown was looming in March 2020 they starting firing off contracts to anyone they had a vague agreement about doing a show with so they could make sure those people still got paid even when the project was cancelled. The only fault I really know about is they are quite insular, trying to get in as an outsider even if you know people inside the company is neigh on impossible, and they do have a habit of using the same two dozen actors over and over. Speaking generically, I am on my guard with most all theatre producers these days. Pretty much every single one will take advantage of you if you let them, some are a lot worse than others but an annoying part of my job is keeping them in check in terms of breaks, overtime payments, days off etc. Something we shouldn't have to be doing, and the hiring crisis in the industry seems to be (anecdotally) causing a genuine rise in standards (next gig has this concept called "two day weekends" and "10 hour work days") but that is currently where we are. I would say if you do turn down the job, tell them why. Making sure employers know the issues potential hirees are having is seen as "rude" in British society, but things only progress when people speak up. by FireFingers1992 (Fri 26th Aug 2022 2:01pm)
  • Aye, it essentially locks you in to not get another rise for a year, letting you know where you are and how much to budget for at least the next 12 months. If you think you are paying over the odds OP go and look at the letting market and see what the going rate is. When I got the place I am staying in it was probably a bit over valued but if we left I am sure my landlord could get an extra £150 a month out the property. by FireFingers1992 (Sat 27th Aug 2022 11:20pm)

Loads of options on the West Highland Line, say Tyndrum or Bridge of Orchy aren't too far but feel like you have reached wilderness whilst still having pubs about for food. If heading to Loch Lomond I'd pass through Balloch and pick up the bus to Balmaha. A very pretty village, good pub, and then you can head up Conic Hill for the views (Tip, head trough Milton of Buchanan an up to take the West Highland Way, so you come up the less steep side of Conic Hill and then go down the steep way into town). Even just the first stretch of the West Highland Way from Milngavie through the country park is nice. I've not done it myself but I'm told to Kilpatrick Hills are lovely and dead easy to get to. Catch a train to Ardrossan and then the ferry to Arran, lovely walks to be had there, and the boat makes it a real adventure. Slightly different vibe but you can go to Troon and walk to beach to Irvine, with Arran across the water. If you want a quick jaunt on a chilly day, this is lovely and short and you can couple it with visiting the attractions in Stirling. • About 4 and a half hours. Took two attempts as I vastly under estimated how much snow would be up there (in January, as I'm an idiot). by FireFingers1992 (Mon 7th Nov 2022 6:25pm)
  • Why are landlords such shitehouses? Lived in this place over three years, they had over £40k out of us. The bathroom, although looked fine when we arrived, has suffered from peeling paint from moisture. No mold as we ventilate as much as possible, but it looks like shit and sometimes paint will literally drop off the wall whilst you're showering. Anyway after moaning on and off from pretty much when we moved in, they sent a consultant round to assess for damp. No damp, just shite design so the moisture builds up on walls. Suggest spending a couple of grand to sort it. You'd think with the amount of money they had of us this would be fine, but no. They've just replaced the extractor fan with a new fan when the old one wasn't broken, and not even fixed the fucked paint or the wee holes the damp consultant drilled. Pricks. And our microwave died and they've said we can buy one ourselves up to the princely sum of £50. There are ZERO microwaves on Amazon for that much, indeed we couldn't find a single one delivered anywhere for that money. Such a pisstake. by FireFingers1992 (Thu 17th Nov 2022 5:40pm)
  • Remember when we were gonna get a rail link to the airport? Good times. by FireFingers1992 (Fri 18th Nov 2022 1:57pm)
  • Tell them you're treating them to lunch, then take them to Star Bar. by FireFingers1992 (Fri 18th Nov 2022 6:26pm)
  • That explains the crazy thrill ride wedged in by St Enoch. I don't normally get scared of rides. but flying a meter or two from the shopping centre walls is a no from me. by FireFingers1992 (Mon 21st Nov 2022 9:29pm)
  • Yeah, you and your dog made it out of the encounter relatively ok, the next person or dog may not be so lucky. by FireFingers1992 (Sat 26th Nov 2022 3:50pm)
  • Yeah they very much over promised and under delivered on that version. The problem was having so little time to change from regular museum to Elfingrove I reckon. Just not viable. And some dud artistic decisions, like the finale being helping a rocket launch from Glen Coe where the video was shot in broad day light despite the fact it was meant to be a live fee dand Elfingrove never happene before sunset. The version now doesn't use the museum at all. It is just a reasonably big ice rink and bar parked out the front of the museum. Did it last year, perfectly acceptable outdoor ice rink that you find in any major city over Christmas. by FireFingers1992 (Sat 26th Nov 2022 11:25pm)
  • Best to book in advance if you can, as it guarantees a seat. Otherwise the bus may be full when it lives Edinburgh city centre. Though haven't done it in years so not sure if it fills up, but certainly used to in late evening, particularly if trains were being dodgy. by FireFingers1992 (Sat 26th Nov 2022 11:30pm)
  • Something up with the subway tomorrow? Journey planners on spt site and Google maps suggest no trains but not seen that mentioned anywhere, and aren't usually affected by strikes. by FireFingers1992 (Wed 4th Jan 2023 7:25pm)
  • If visiting the Burrell I'd make a day of it an explore the country park, House for an Art Lover, and Pollock House and/or Crookston Castle. Could also combine the Riverside with the Govan Stones and the Fairfield Heritage centre (use the subway train to cross the river from Patrick). Personally I love the little Glasgow Tenement Museum, not big but fascinating. Glasgow Museum of Art can be worth a look too. by FireFingers1992 (Sun 15th Jan 2023 5:16pm)
  • Yeah, it's been a thing on and off since the new year. Very weird, assuming it's a glitch but it is shut some Sundays as well so it is turning into a bit of guesswork at the moment. by FireFingers1992 (Sun 15th Jan 2023 6:35pm)
  • There is a apostrophe in "there's" though so neither is getting a fucking A for English are we? by FireFingers1992 (Sun 15th Jan 2023 10:26pm)
  • I bought a 16 pack of loo roll as I always do every few months (as it doesn't go off, so you either use it or you have bigger concerns than spending an extra £4.50 on bog roll) in early March and go a few dirty looks. We brought in a covid policy at work of knowing the symptoms, handwashing and remember not being able to get hand sanitiser for love nor money by late Feb. I work in theatre and our days off were Monday's so we did a show on Sunday, went home, and then never were in the same room putting on a show together again. Very odd not to get closure on that show. My flatmates was far more dramatic. She was over doing a show in New Zealand and the producers had to fight to find tickets to fly them out of there. She landed after well over 30+ hours of straight journeying (New Zealand to Australia to Oman to London and then train to Glasgow) very jet lagged. Had to convince her there was enough food etc bless her. by FireFingers1992 (Mon 16th Jan 2023 8:19pm)
  • Broken clock cafe by Kelvinbridge subway station posted about doing them the other day, if you can't wait. by FireFingers1992 (Tue 24th Jan 2023 8:01pm)
  • Thanks for the info! I live in Glasgow but travel a lot for work so this is gonna mess things up. That said, travelling via Edinbrugh to London only really adds an hour, is often cheaper, and the trains don't smell like the Avanti ones. Will still bugger me going to North West places like Manchester though. by FireFingers1992 (Thu 26th Jan 2023 1:04pm)
  • Maybe not quite what you are looking for, but Oxfam's online shop is cracking for books, and all the money goes to charity too of course. by FireFingers1992 (Tue 31st Jan 2023 9:52pm)
  • Just don't order delivery on a Friday/Saturday night. Their delivery times go to shit. But for a midweek treat they are certainly the best I've found. by FireFingers1992 (Fri 10th Feb 2023 11:49pm)
  • Maryhill? Absolutely gutted that happened. by FireFingers1992 (Sun 30th Apr 2023 6:54pm)
  • Any recommendations for decent letting agencies? Our landlord is selling up so we've got to find somewhere new, and our last lot were rubbish. by FireFingers1992 (Tue 20th Jun 2023 1:16pm)
  • They were meant to after lasts year's fucktastrophy with Doune. In fact, the organisers had agreed to pay every act, roadie, steward, equipment provider etc in advance to give people faith of it actually happening. Of course they didn't actually do it, and here we are. by FireFingers1992 (Thu 22nd Jun 2023 1:35am)
  • Doune are cunts no doubt, but I'm sure that's how being bar staff at Reading etc was a decade ago. Basically you'd pay for a "ticket" to the bar company, then work three shifts for them. As long as you completed those three shifts you got your money back, and any time not on shift was your own to go see bands. It stopped people saying they would work it, get on site and then promptly disappear to have a free festival. by FireFingers1992 (Thu 22nd Jun 2023 1:44am)
  • A lot of London's underground lines run all night at weekends. But go further afield like New York and Berlin and it is a 24/7 operation. No excuse anymore. by FireFingers1992 (Sat 24th Jun 2023 12:43pm)

  • Surprised to see Le Petit Coq so low, its lush. I live up near the botanics and neither Comet Pieces and North Star have really gone down hill so have venture that way for a good sandwich.. The relatively new Santa Lucia deli just up from Le Petit Coq is also really good, as well as La Pastina Deli. by FireFingers1992 (Fri 7th Jul 2023 11:36pm)
  • I stopped going to Cineworld because of sound issues. Final straw was In The Heights where multiple speakers being down which meant the score was almost inaudible compared to the vocals. I even emailed them letting them know about the issues, heard nothing back. by FireFingers1992 (Tue 18th Jul 2023 8:26pm)
  • I believe Scotrail don't do them on many routes, fuck knows why. by FireFingers1992 (Thu 20th Jul 2023 2:59pm)
  • State of toon right now. Had to get from Maryhill to Queens Street with suitcases as landlord is selling up. Prebooked a Glasgow Taxi. Guy couldn't figure out the road closures so bailed, didnt even call to let us know or ask for advice. Uber was triple the normal price and still no driver wanted the trip when we tried that instead. Had to drag suitcases 20 mins to the subway and dash. The city is not designed for this scale of thing to take over. It's a place people live and work, not a bloody events space. by FireFingers1992 (Sun 6th Aug 2023 1:20pm)
  • We had a mouse in our tenement flat. After trying traps etc called a guy, he put poison down, never saw it again. by FireFingers1992 (Wed 9th Aug 2023 3:32pm)
  • Could get the 914 coach up to Glen coe, mountain resort is a tenner a night. Or could get the Inverness train and get off at Blair Atholl or Aviemore, campsites a plenty. by FireFingers1992 (Wed 9th Aug 2023 3:39pm)
  • New Lush location is opening, much bigger with its own onsite spa, just a few doors up from the current location. by FireFingers1992 (Sun 13th Aug 2023 7:30pm)
  • I'm surprised councils don't issue a residency card with council tax (or council tax exemption). That would gain you free access to the stuff the council tax pays for (museums, libraries etc) with people without a card having to pay. Make kids go free with a card holder. Sure it is pen to abuse, someone will lend cards to mates etc but I think that is a better solution that Glaswegians paying for tourist to go free. by FireFingers1992 (Mon 14th Aug 2023 10:39am)
