  • Mines about £100 a month with James Gibb and that includes building insurance for a tenement. Building insurance jumped massively last year as they revalued it. I’m convinced they’re scamming us and we are looking to move factor. by GlasgowGunner (Thu 10th Dec 2020 12:19pm)
  • Skip the boosters, they’re generally rubbish and will boost a poor signal and make it worse. Get a mesh (whole home WiFi) system and it’ll be much better. Or just get a UniFi AP and it will probably be powerful enough to cover your whole flat. by GlasgowGunner (Tue 15th Dec 2020 9:57am)
  • Shit goes in and shit comes back out. Unless you can connect it via Ethernet or powerline you’re just boosting what is already a poor signal. What makes it even worse is that you’ll have full strength WiFi, but the internet speed will actually be lower. by GlasgowGunner (Tue 15th Dec 2020 7:00pm)
  • I had one of them recently and it was incredible. by GlasgowGunner (Thu 17th Dec 2020 12:48pm)

  • You need to update your thinking on marketing. Marketing is part of Strathclyde’s excellent business school and is higher on rankings than Glasgow. It’s currently 3rd on the U.K. rankings and Glasgow is nowhere to be seen. I’m also a ‘hiring manager’ - although would never call myself that - for a major FS firm in Glasgow and have done lots of assessment centres and final interviews for grads over the last 5 years. Frankly I don’t even pay attention to where people go to uni or what they study. Their performance at interview has been a far better indicator than which uni they went to. by GlasgowGunner (Sat 19th Dec 2020 11:53am)

  • Literally nothing. The police have said they won’t be routinely stopping people. There should be road blocks on all the major roads. Fines and turned around unless you have a proper reason and evidence. by GlasgowGunner (Sun 20th Dec 2020 7:46am)

My legs never get cold, though. It must come from wearing shorts everyday to primary school. by GlasgowGunner (Sun 27th Dec 2020 7:20am)

  • Sorry but I won’t have your shitty decision making skills affect my life and kill my gran. What this crisis has proven is that people can’t make their own sensible decisions. by GlasgowGunner (Sun 3rd Jan 2021 7:01pm)
  • Making your own decisions means you want to break the rules. If you break the rules you risk spreading the virus. If you spread it, it could pass to a vulnerable person who could die. This is literally what is happening right now and partly why the numbers are so bad. by GlasgowGunner (Sun 3rd Jan 2021 8:15pm)

Don’t worry - just whack on the hazards and slam on the breaks with no warning. Road closed - don’t worry - I’m a taxi! by GlasgowGunner (Mon 4th Jan 2021 7:58am)

  • My wheelie bins have been nicked by the bin men. Block of 8 flats but we’ve only had 7 for last few years which was fine. Gradually this year we’re losing one after the other and down to 4 now. They get collected for emptying then never reappear. Council demand £50 for a new one but it’ll just happen again so why pay? by GlasgowGunner (Tue 12th Jan 2021 9:34pm)
  • And where should I recycle? The council have taken away all of our recycling bins. by GlasgowGunner (Tue 12th Jan 2021 9:38pm)
  • Are you looking for an internet provider? If Virgin is available in your area get that. If not, you should be able to get fibre (to the cabinet) in Finnieston and therefore all the providers will give you the same service and the only difference will be the equipment they provide. FTTC should give speeds up to 70mb which is fast enough for multiple people to be streaming and gaming at the same time. What speed package do you have from Three? by GlasgowGunner (Wed 13th Jan 2021 9:32am)
  • Yes, there are places for everyone who wants one. Unfortunately not everybody wants help. by GlasgowGunner (Fri 15th Jan 2021 11:05am)
  • Goals in the south side has been pretty busy throughout. Saw people there at the weekend. Of course you aren’t actually allowed to right now and it’s technically closed. The 5 aside by great western golf has been busy too. by GlasgowGunner (Tue 19th Jan 2021 10:01am)
  • A reasonable company would give you reasonable notice you’re going back to the office as they know there will be personal things people need to sort out (child care, school runs etc). My English employer has said we’ll be given a minimum of 6 weeks notice. I don’t think we’ll be in the office until at least the summer. by GlasgowGunner (Tue 19th Jan 2021 10:00am)
  • Assuming they want to open as soon as they are allowed to, yours will likely be determined by the Scottish government. When the government say non-essential retail can open I’d hedge my bets that your company will open at that time. by GlasgowGunner (Tue 19th Jan 2021 11:31am)
  • My mate was advised against buying there because of the roof. If something goes wrong it’s a fortune per flat. by GlasgowGunner (Thu 21st Jan 2021 10:17am)

  • They took our recycling bins away months ago and not replaced. I requested a new one, they said it was complete, but no sign of it. by GlasgowGunner (Fri 5th Feb 2021 3:48pm)
  • Grads all start on the same salary at that place. I heard the £42k figure recently. Any junior position that isn’t on the grad scheme will be on the standard scale which last I heard was up to 38k but is dependent what you ask for what you interview. by GlasgowGunner (Mon 8th Feb 2021 9:04am)
  • I’ve never had email notifications for work on my phone. I like having my emails for my own convenience, but I don’t want to be notified of a new one. Come to think of it, I don’t get notified of a new one at work either on my laptop. I get hundreds of emails a day and I’ll check them when I need to. If it’s important people Skype or call. by GlasgowGunner (Mon 8th Feb 2021 10:11am)

  • Rejecting someone for where they live isn’t part of the discrimination laws. It’s a legally valid reason to give. by GlasgowGunner (Tue 16th Feb 2021 7:56pm)
  • Which law is it breaking? I’ve tried and failed to find something that says it wouldn’t be allowed. Obviously you can not hire someone for a job in London if they live in Glasgow. Where is the line drawn from a legal stand point? by GlasgowGunner (Tue 16th Feb 2021 8:10pm)
  • You sound like a jolly individual. As I said, I just did my research. I’ve also done various training at work specifically related to hiring and this has never once come up. Can you point me in the direction of some case law where this has been tested? by GlasgowGunner (Tue 16th Feb 2021 8:44pm)
  • Yes, I think you’re wrong. I also think you’re a grade A twat. by GlasgowGunner (Tue 16th Feb 2021 8:52pm)

  • Clubbing in general across the country was down pre-pandemic. Kushion is another that closed down fairly recently in Glasgow. It had been open 10+ years. by GlasgowGunner (Wed 17th Feb 2021 11:24am)

  • Renting a 3 bedroom non-HMO flat is probably easier than renting a 1 or 2 bed. You’ll need to arrange temporary accommodation for arriving in the county as no letting agent will rent to you unless they’ve met you. When you’re here, get one gumtree, Rightmove and s1homes every single day, multiple times a day, and check your various searches. If you see something you like call immediately (not email!) to arrange a viewing. Take the earliest one possible. Be prepared to make a decision on the spot in or after the viewing as if you don’t someone else will. by GlasgowGunner (Mon 22nd Feb 2021 7:38am)
  • Loads of charities aren’t accepting anything other than brand new with tags. They are being inundated with people doing clear outs and obviously all shops are closed so they can’t sell anything. by GlasgowGunner (Mon 1st Mar 2021 9:59am)
  • What makes you think it will crash? There’s extraordinary demand on property and we can build them fast enough. by GlasgowGunner (Tue 2nd Mar 2021 9:49pm)
  • Completely agree, had much better growing up outside the city. by GlasgowGunner (Thu 4th Mar 2021 5:11pm)
  • We did that when we bought ours and got it under home report. There was only internal work though as the communal areas were fine and the home report was mostly fine too - nothing unexpected for a tenement. Every room required new flooring and painting, and the windows needed repaired. The main thing was it needed a new kitchen and there were a few unknowns in there that would’ve been imposssible for us to fully investigate. We took a risk and it massively paid off. We spent less than £10k doing it all up and even with that it’s still less than HR total spent. by GlasgowGunner (Thu 4th Mar 2021 5:16pm)
  • We ripped up the old carpet and put down laminate in hallway and a room. It was £10 per square metre from B&Q and we installed it (very easily) ourselves. by GlasgowGunner (Thu 4th Mar 2021 8:48pm)
  • Frankly it could probably do with new floorboards but it’s not bad. by GlasgowGunner (Thu 4th Mar 2021 9:01pm)
  • There might be a lot of really friendly people but there are sure as hell a lot of very unfriendly people too. by GlasgowGunner (Sat 6th Mar 2021 9:50am)
  • Landlords have to pay the factor fee or they’ll have the factors coming after them for it via the courts. by GlasgowGunner (Sun 7th Mar 2021 9:51am)
  • How much work are you talking? If it’s just carpets and painting that’s nothing. For some reason it puts the majority of people off, though. Kitchen is obviously a bigger job and you’re talking thousands to just buy it, let alone install it. Bathrooms are the same, although generally more liveable as long as it’s functional. We did our kitchen and carpets/painting in every room and bought at 20k under home report (£160k vs £180k). The work we did was less than £10k including the new kitchen. It took us about 2 months total and we did the majority of that before moving in. Someone did the kitchen and carpets for us and we did the wallpaper stripping (all 5 layers of it that clearly had never been done before), painting, and laminate flooring. by GlasgowGunner (Sun 7th Mar 2021 9:55am)
  • They’ll also have to do it from a safe distance, meaning it would be impossible unless they’re part of your household or bubble. by GlasgowGunner (Mon 8th Mar 2021 7:28pm)
  • And taken away half of the on-street bins and replaced with fewer larger ones. Ridiculous decision. by GlasgowGunner (Sat 13th Mar 2021 1:40pm)

  • 100% agree. This lies with the council. If the bin had space all that stuff would be in it. by GlasgowGunner (Mon 15th Mar 2021 10:59am)
  • The home report will just say the roof was inspected visually with binoculars. Unless you commission a roof survey there’s not much else you can do. Frankly if you’re offer was contingent on that the seller will go with the next best who doesn’t have the same condition as nothing good will come out of it for them. by GlasgowGunner (Thu 18th Mar 2021 1:35pm)
  • You’re the first person I’ve ever seen or heard calling it the ‘smartie tube’. I thought it was one of those things that only articles about Glasgow call it, like the Clockwork Orange. by GlasgowGunner (Fri 19th Mar 2021 7:43am)

  • > Surveyors have fairly strict guidelines on setting valuations and they have access to more recent sale prices than is available to the public via Registers of Scotland/Rightmove. We’re selling right now. The surveyor put down the valuation our estate agent told him to. Unfortunately that’s how it works. It’s a corrupt system. by GlasgowGunner (Mon 29th Mar 2021 7:52am)

  • We went tonight at 5:30 and the place was dead. No queues at all. In answer to your question, Hertz have vans for rent at IKEA and they are extremely reasonably priced. I think it’s £30-40 a day + fuel. by GlasgowGunner (Mon 5th Apr 2021 8:45pm)

  • I ordered a new recycling bin as ours all disappeared, got told it was delivered twice, and still don’t have one. by GlasgowGunner (Fri 9th Apr 2021 3:52pm)
  • All the council tennis courts have open sessions. I think Queens Park specifically have (or had, anyway) one for beginners. Make sure you find a friend from one them who’s a beginner too you can play with regularly as it’s the only way you’ll get better. You need to be playing multiple times a week. It’s a hard sport to learn, especially as an adult. by GlasgowGunner (Sun 11th Apr 2021 6:25am)
  • You should be calling 101 after incidents like this and giving the police a description of the guy. by GlasgowGunner (Tue 13th Apr 2021 7:45am)

  • Don’t get down heartened. There are bargains out there. Look at flats that need a lot of work. You’ll often find places that go for home report or just a little above. by GlasgowGunner (Sun 25th Apr 2021 8:05am)
  • It’s been cut beyond all recognition. Basically if you don’t have recycling right next to your house people don’t do it. It’s a very well understood concept that people don’t go out of their way to do something that doesn’t benefit them. If recycling is easy it doesn’t get done. by GlasgowGunner (Mon 26th Apr 2021 2:09pm)
  • Why have the repair works been mentioned? If it came via the factor it’s worth getting an independent survey done on it to confirm remedial works are actually required. I’m petrified of my roof needing done and being caught with a similar bill. by GlasgowGunner (Thu 29th Apr 2021 10:14pm)
  • Freehold and leasehold isn’t really a concept up here. If you buy somewhere you own it entirely apart from in a very few circumstances. Most blocks of flats will have a factor in place that is paid for by the owners to manage the building and deal with maintenance etc. by GlasgowGunner (Mon 3rd May 2021 12:59pm)

It’s absolutely rife within Rangers. It can regularly be heard on TV (when fans are in the stadium). It’s the culture within the club and it’s abhorrent. by GlasgowGunner (Sun 16th May 2021 9:50pm)

  • My point is that Rangers the club, and the fans, continually blow off any criticism of their fans by saying it’s a small minority, they’re not real fans, and it’s different people. Rangers have a huge problem that they are unwilling to accept even exists. Sectarian singing happens week in week out. It’s absolute rife through the support. I live near Ibrox and hear it every time there’s a game on and there are fans walking past. This is not a small minority. It might still be a minority, if it’s not a small one. by GlasgowGunner (Wed 19th May 2021 7:23pm)

They should also have regular club nights where people turn up and play. The coach often leads them and will match people by skill level. by GlasgowGunner (Mon 7th Jun 2021 10:31pm)

  • The issue is anyone is allowed to list their items against (almost) any product listing and there’s just one bucket for each item. My real items go in, and as long as they have the same barcode, someone else’s fake items go in too. I don’t buy clothes on Amazon for that reason. • As pleased as I am that England didn’t win last night it feels like a very hollow victory. Awful to see a team lose on penalties and a manager trusting a 19 year old to take the 5th. by GlasgowGunner (Mon 12th Jul 2021 8:23am)
  • There’s a lot more to penalties than just that. It’s a mental game at that point as much as it is a physical game. The team who takes the first penalty wins around 60% of the time. Just shows the pressure they are under, especially if they’re going second. by GlasgowGunner (Mon 12th Jul 2021 11:14am)

Right next to the huge new Waitrose. by GlasgowGunner (Wed 14th Jul 2021 8:05am)

If they want to collect the charge and you don’t willingly pay the only way for them to do it is take you to small claims court. by GlasgowGunner (Thu 5th Aug 2021 12:27pm)

The vaccine program has been a success and it’s unlikely we’ll be going into another lockdown. You’re absolutely right. I only have three anecdotal stories. My own and my downstairs neighbour sold recently in Shawlands and neither of us had any landlords look at our flats. • You’re an idiot unfortunately. You’ll get a ticket and you won’t have a leg to stand on. They’ve given you a way to pay but you refused to take them up on it. Even in the RingGo app you can search by street name. If it doesn’t work I choose the closest street and as long as it’s the same zone it’s fine. • I don’t know much about that end of the market. For a more expensive west end flat you would expect minimum 10% over the home report valuation. The ‘offers over’ is generally around 10% lower than the valuation. by GlasgowGunner (Wed 6th Oct 2021 7:19am)
  • I believe that 20% falls into the “minimum 10%” category. It really depends on the flat itself how much over it goes for. by GlasgowGunner (Thu 7th Oct 2021 3:56pm)

  • Avoid Purple Bricks. I know from having spoken to people who were looking to buy our flat they avoid them. I’ve heard solicitors hate dealing with them too. We went with Rettie and on day 1 of being listed I think we had 15-20 viewings booked. Their fee structure was reasonable and the service provided to us we thought was excellent. Our flat was Shawlands and went over 10% above home report. We chose them because they gave the highest valuation. I have no doubt Clyde would’ve got 10% over as well but as their valuation was lower that would’ve resulted in a lower selling price. by GlasgowGunner (Wed 20th Oct 2021 5:44pm)

  • I know people who love telling me that a car in Glasgow is a waste of money. Maybe it is if you have unlimited time but when a journey takes an hour by public transport if you time it well versus 20 minutes driving leaving whenever you want I’m going to choose the car every single time. by GlasgowGunner (Wed 20th Oct 2021 5:51pm)
  • What car do you have? I was looking at various PHEVs (SUV size) and the extra cost to get the PHEV version of the car vastly outweighs the benefits of having the battery for short journeys. I get it’s good for the environment but if it’s not affordable people can’t be expected to make the change. by GlasgowGunner (Wed 20th Oct 2021 7:30pm)

Corporation tax is 19% therefore they would save £19 by putting it through the books. It’s not a 1 to 1 exercise. • No as the motorists actions aren’t linked to yours. It doesn’t stop you from being an asshole in this situation. I get that lots of cyclists do this but it doesn’t make it right. I personally (will accept I’m an asshole too) slow right down and go through a red light only if it’s not a main road and there are no cars or pedestrians about. I mean really go through at crawling pace so I don’t need to stop and unclip. • You didn’t ask for advice here, but I notice you did on another sub. Your CV needs a lot of work. I’ve just hired two data scientists and regularly hire analysts. For one it’s too wordy. I want to know what you did and what tools/languages you used to do it. A section at the top with your key skills and then each job history or uni project should be bullet points. by GlasgowGunner (Wed 5th Jan 2022 11:20am)
  • Hi - refresh Rightmove every hour. As soon as a new flat goes up call the agent to arrange a viewing. If you email you’ll be too late. Take the first viewing available (your manager should be understanding if it’s during work) and if you like it tell the agent there and then to get the ball rolling. It’s a tough market and you have to move fast. by GlasgowGunner (Wed 5th Jan 2022 11:38am)

  • Take a look for places that sell ex-rentals. A lot cheaper than buying new. Get the jacket and waistcoat tailored by any seamstress and it’ll be smashing. Not expensive to get jackets tailored. Then of course the wet facilities, but you’ll grow bored of sauna/steam/jacuzzi quickly unless you have someone to go with or lots of time to kill! • I just want a ballpark figure. Everyone else can do it. Is my £20 left in my wallet enough to get me home or not? by GlasgowGunner (Sat 12th Feb 2022 7:44am)
  • I said almost exactly that to the driver, “I’ve only got £20 is that enough?” And he just told me the price is what the meter says. It wasn’t enough and I had my card so I knew I was fine. I just think an estimate would be good. Uber is great as you know what the price is up front. And you also don’t need to have an argument about the card machine or deal with a grumpy driver who doesn’t want to use it. by GlasgowGunner (Sat 12th Feb 2022 8:09am)

  • These companies take diversity very seriously. The schemes are unbelievably competitive. My company also has one which is extremely competitive and we’ll have hundreds of candidates at the final stage for however many places we have. The reasons you got are because your interviewer would have seen multiple people on the same day and had to write up their feedback in between interviews. Unfortunately the managers just won’t spend much time doing it so it will be generic with maybe one or two points that are genuinely good feedback. by GlasgowGunner (Sat 26th Feb 2022 11:00am)

For reference I average around 30s / 25m over a full training session and I booked medium every time. Most of the time it was people average ability but there were occasions when someone significantly slower was in it too. by GlasgowGunner (Mon 7th Mar 2022 4:48pm)

  • London manage it just fine. Every bus journey costs £1.50. Tapping out is irrelevant as it doesn’t matter where you get off. If you’re £1.50s reach the daily/weekly limit it lowers the cost. by GlasgowGunner (Wed 9th Mar 2022 6:30pm)

  • Literally every single area could be a yes but we know absolutely nothing about you. Do at least a little bit of research yourself. You’re getting scorned because you’ve essentially asked if a really nice place is an ok place to live. Have you even googled it? The most popular areas are Milngavie/Bearsden in East Dunbartonshire and Giffnock/Clarkston/Mearns in East Ren. Partly because the schools are highly regarded. And ignore everyone else here. They’re being idiots. You’re right - the driver was acting negligently and could’ve caused an accident. I also don’t blame you for not wanting to speak up at the time. Google the salary calculator and put in your details for a rough idea of how much you’ll take home each month. Living costs for rent are genuinely from a few hundred to thousands a month depending where you live and what type of flat. Is there a WhatsApp group with other JP grads? Find out where some of them are living. I would hazard a guess at a combination of Shawlands/Battlefield/Pollokshaws areas in southside, or anywhere west end. Remember that the rental market in glasgow right now is insane. It’s incredibly difficult to get a flat. Don’t be afraid of getting something and then moving fairly quickly. There are no minimum rental periods anymore don’t let landlords fool you into thinking there are, but also don’t tell them you’ll only be there a few months. by GlasgowGunner (Tue 18th Oct 2022 6:14am)

If person A and B have the same lifestyle but only person A has mould there are other factors at play. You should not need to have windows open in the winter to protect from mould. Period. But why does that mean he should just let it out for cost price? He said it’s part of his retirement plan so it does need to generate an income. He could sell up and then it will likely go to someone who treats tenants significantly worse. by GlasgowGunner (Fri 30th Dec 2022 10:42am)

  • I can’t make head nor tail from your post. What are you wanting from your swim? If it’s lane swimming download the Glasgow club app and book at any pool that offers it. It’s lane swimming. It doesn’t need to be deep and you can tumble turn in the shallow end fine. If you’re hitting your head on the ground learn proper technique. by GlasgowGunner (Mon 11th Sep 2023 1:14pm)
  • Try Eastwood. Definitely allowed to dive there and shallow end is a reasonable depth. I’ve found Bellahouston absolutely fine for proper lane swimming too. by GlasgowGunner (Mon 11th Sep 2023 1:42pm)

Granted this mentions it needs nails through it. To be honest the common American trope about needing balls and a glove probably isn’t applicable. If the prosecutor thinks they have enough evidence you have it purely for a weapon they’ll charge you for it. by GlasgowGunner (Mon 30th Oct 2023 6:05am)
  • Because lots of laws are applicable in both jurisdictions and I hadn’t checked for this specific one, hence the “assuming.” However if you read this you’ll find out more and see that offensive weapons are indeed banned in private in Scotland. https://www.gov.scot/publications/offensive-weapons-act-2019-scottish-statutory-guidance/pages/3/ by GlasgowGunner (Mon 30th Oct 2023 8:51am)
