  • The pest control company will likely do what you are doing; set traps. You or your landlord will want to try and find where they’re getting in and see if you can fill in the hole (if that’s the case). Look for droppings, that should give you a good idea where to leave traps and where the hole might be. Keep food items away; keep stuff like cereal and biscuits or whatever in Tupperware. They also eat soap though. If they’re coming in from outside, what’s the garden/back close like? Long grass and trash bags make good places for nests. Also, you could also consider getting a cat I suppose. by Lost_property_ (Wed 9th Feb 2022 2:09pm)
  • You could ask the landlord; they might be trying to avoid young folk as they’re worried about damaging the flat/parties. Students don’t pay council tax, but someone living with a student has to pay 75% of the normal rate. So you can see some folk would rather find someone to split it 50/50. The reality is flat hunting is a pain and they all disappear really fast. Strathclyde is in the city centre though which means you can reach it easily on public transport so your flat could he anywhere. Good luck. by Lost_property_ (Tue 15th Feb 2022 6:55am)

  • The uni has its own museum (Huntarian), and the kelvingrove museum is also very close. It’s also nearby a large park (Kelvingrove park) and there’s a large glass house/botanic gardens near by. I’d suggest visiting the park and surrounding area. You should walk there from the uni, stopping off for coffee or food on the way. Hillhead subway is between the park and the uni if that’s how your are getting in. by Lost_property_ (Tue 1st Mar 2022 10:27pm)
  • They’re building units but I don’t know if we know what they’ll be housing yet. There’s going to be a cinema: https://www.scottishconstructionnow.com/articles/glasgow-approves-retail-park-cinema-plan Not a huge fan of retail parks. Most folk in the surrounding area (gorbals and Govanhill) don’t have cars so won’t necessarily access it, and retail parks tend to be used by folk driving in from the suburbs, giving their money to franchises, and leaving again. This will harm the local independent businesses and produces a lot of air pollution. I know everyone loves a B&M bargains but otherwise all the local community get out of this are minimum wage jobs. by Lost_property_ (Wed 9th Mar 2022 12:50pm)

  • We have different definitions of working class. The definition I would use is someone who has to exchange their labour for money. The politicians you’ve listed all fit that category. And to say PH doesn’t have a connection to the demographic he wants to improve things for and is a career politician? You need to Google his background. by Lost_property_ (Fri 27th May 2022 7:08am)

  • Banking - uni can help but there are banks everywhere in the city, banking is all done online on an app (so something like monzo might be good for you). Phone - if your phone is unlocked you can buy a SIM card when you’re here; something like £10 a month and you’ll get free data and calls with that. Travel - trains tend to be more expensive than flying unfortunately. You can use Google flights to look at departures from Glasgow. You’re close enough to Edinburgh that you could fly to/from there as well. - can’t offer suggestions on a priority list. Depends what you’re into. A travel guide book would be a good start to see what stuff you could do, and something like a lonely planet probably does a UK version you can look at yo get ideas by Lost_property_ (Thu 2nd Jun 2022 10:56pm)
  • The folk that organise it have a history or organising things and then cancelling them, leaving the musicians out of pocket. https://bectu.org.uk/news/reports-of-unacceptable-treatment-at-playground-festival-in-glasgow/ They were selling tickets for loads of stuff at junction one and always cancel at short notice as they’re not able to organise it. There’s something pretty dodgy about them. by Lost_property_ (Tue 7th Jun 2022 10:16am)

  • This isn’t what you want to hear, but in my experience finding flats in Glasgow, you really need to view them in person. I’ve taken one on the spot before as there were later viewings and I was certain the flat would be gone had I left it. I found one when I was a postgrad as well; I paid 25% of the council tax though so the person wasn’t left with 75%. by Lost_property_ (Mon 4th Jul 2022 10:10pm)

  • I can see what OP is getting at. The imported fruit (bananas, some apples, mangoes, cherries etc.) is not as sweet in the UK as it’s picked before it’s fully ripened and shipped to us. I’ve lived in warm climates as well, and the fruits listed above are much sweeter than those you can find in the UK. In reply to OP’s question, buying stuff in season is your best bet. I buy from locovore but don’t find the fruit that special. As for supermarkets, M&S is your best bet. by Lost_property_ (Wed 20th Jul 2022 10:21am)

  • If you wait the week, folk paying for premium have already viewed and taken the flat. As for places to avoid, I viewed some HMO’s which looked pretty grim, but that was more to do with the flat and landlord. • Could try a pharmacy that’s beside/part of a health centre. That’s probably your best bet as the district nurses will use loads of them. The pharmacist should be able to recommend something else. Another waterproof dressing you can use until the tegaderm arrives. Tegaderm is also on sale on Amazon… so you could get it by tomorrow at the latest is your order has been delayed. by Lost_property_ (Thu 29th Sep 2022 9:48am)

  • I'd second this. You drive, so you can drive into the city, or into a train station or subway to get into the middle of the city. There are still hundreds of students trying to find accomodation so you won't have much luck in Glasgow city. by Lost_property_ (Thu 6th Oct 2022 11:59am)
  • This is my experience as well. Not sure why, maybe a sense of community, or they know what it’s like to do a low paying job/to be poor. by Lost_property_ (Sat 15th Oct 2022 9:17am)
  • Could someone please translate this to English? by Lost_property_ (Sat 15th Oct 2022 6:09pm)
  • I can understand why this winds OP up. We’re in the middle of a cost of living and housing crisis, and the the experience of many students is one close to poverty. Here we have a video where someone complains about having to fly economy, and buys a home for cash without a second thought. It shows a lack of self awareness and is a bit distasteful. My main issue is how easy it appears to be for people to buy property in the UK. Some countries limit purchases to those who aren’t citizens, whilst in the UK there are thousands of flats in London alone being bought for investment purposes and never lived in. by Lost_property_ (Tue 18th Oct 2022 8:05am)
  • Diwali. by Lost_property_ (Mon 24th Oct 2022 9:08pm)
  • I have heard the same around ‘culture’ and it’s nonsense. Many of the housing issues are partially the fault of landlords; as long as they’re receiving the rent (often in the form of housing benefit, even when the tenants are not in the country for months at a time) they don’t care. And if you’re living in the flat, you can hardly complain if it’s falling apart and full of mould as you know you’ll be out on your arse if you do. And as you’re often working cash in hand (in a car wash or factory), you don’t have enough cash to rent privately (hence the sharing with relatives). It’s a complex issue, and much of it is to do with poverty. It’s never good enough to blame ‘culture’. by Lost_property_ (Tue 25th Oct 2022 1:06pm)
  • It’s not their culture at all, of course it isn’t. The issue here is one of poverty. But poverty is complex and multifaceted. The housing situations are a result of slum landlords, poorly maintained homes, poorly paid work (and sometimes trafficking), education, lack of support from/engagement with services etc etc. But tackling these all require thinking, time, effort, and money. So it’s easier to just blame ‘culture’. Let’s name this; people are thinking of the Roma population here. You could find a postcode in Glasgow which has high alcohol and drug use; we wouldn’t just brush it off as ‘culture’. Edit: Poverty and poorly paid work has been in Govanhill for a century. There’s a van that takes folk to the Albert Bartlet potato factory each morning and you can still get a bus to Ireland. If this sounds like something that happened 100 years ago it’s because it was. by Lost_property_ (Tue 25th Oct 2022 1:18pm)
  • I think the definition of poverty I’m using differs to yours. I’m not referring to simply how much cash they have in the bank. I’m not making excuses; if anything I’m doing the opposite by saying we can’t just say ‘culture’ and ignore the problems. But in my experience the problems are often related to poverty (and how this interacts with the children being unsupervised, education around health and hygiene in the home environment amongst other things). Many do come from poverty in Eastern Europe, and again, I would challenge that it’s ok to live a certain way here if someone has lived that way before. I realise it must be incredibly frustrating though. by Lost_property_ (Tue 25th Oct 2022 3:34pm)
  • The Roma people in Govanhill, and the charities and organisations who work with them all use the word Roma. Historically that is also the term used by a distinct group of people. I’ve never heard the term ‘Rroms’ and the term gypsy, whilst may be a term people identify with a) is used for other groups including Irish travellers, and b) is often used as a derogatory term and is often avoided for this reason. by Lost_property_ (Tue 25th Oct 2022 3:38pm)

  • They’ve been clear in their statement that certain shops and the vedge boxes are not only profitable, but have been growing/increasing. There are some successful and profitable parts of the buisiness. The issue was opening shops which have not been successful. by Lost_property_ (Fri 25th Nov 2022 8:29pm)
  • Pretty much. But they couldn’t have foreseen the cost of living crisis which a)has pushed fuel bills up and will add large costs to their shops and b)left folk with less money, meaning they’re cutting back on shopping in places like locavore. It’s easy to be critical, but running a business is precarious and risks have to be taken. I don’t use the shops. I do however receive a vedge box and load of bread each week which I think is ok value. Part of the reason I subscribe is the ethos; locally grown food is something we really need going forward for a variety of reasons. by Lost_property_ (Sat 26th Nov 2022 9:19am)

  • We have Nuffield, David Loyd, and Arlington baths in and around Glasgow which are on the higher spec end. At the lower end, there are a bunch of gyms like pure gym and JD sports. I’d say the council gyms (Glasgow club) are in between. These tend to have pools (I don’t know if the saunas and stuff are even open in all of them again). They’re not as nice as the higher end ones, and you might have to wait for equipment. The good thing about these is the staff will help out with our pushing PT sessions on you, and you get 4 free sessions to help you settle in and get used to it. I think the most important thing is to find one you like and is near you so it’s not a pain to go. No point choosing a nice gym if it’s out the way and takes effort to get to the place. by Lost_property_ (Sun 11th Dec 2022 9:43am)

And many international students are not wealthy; undergrad and masters students are often relying on loans and living in poverty. PhD students only receive around £17,500 a year if funded. • That isn’t true. The reasons these studies offer vouchers is there are issues around offering cash, namely being seen as a ‘payment’, which if you’re on benefits should be declared and deducted from the money you receive. Easier to offer vouchers in this case to protect participants from this faff. There’s also other ethical issues around ‘paying’ participants in research and whether it introduces bias but I think vouchers and pay are often similar as one voucher can be used in loss of different places in person and online. by Lost_property_ (Fri 31st Mar 2023 2:20pm)

  • Well, you see. I don't sit thinking 'I want to go into Glasgow, I better spurge >10k on a car'. Instead, I already have a car. My tax and insurance has already been paid, and an MOT is required irrespective if I drive it 1 or 100,000 miles in a year. In this instance, I can drive and park for cheaper than it costs me in petrol. It probably is still cheaper when I consider any wear and tear over a short journey as well. Hope this helps. EDIT: In fact, sometimes it's more expensive not to drive the car. I've had to replace a battery and perishing typres during COVID as I wasn't driving, and I had breaks sieze years ago on a car that wasn't driven for a few month. by Lost_property_ (Wed 26th Apr 2023 2:38pm)

  • I live in an area close to a few drive throughs. They’re not good for the local economy or people as they a) are full of franchises that take money away from the local shops and b) are used by people with cars that don’t always live in the area. You must be familiar with the ‘hello, my name is’ campaign. But I suspect your concerns aren’t really to do with health professionals failing to introduce themselves, and more with the failure to train and recruit enough doctors, with the result that GP practices like this one find other staff to fill gaps. This can be done safely and effectively, but that’s certainly not what happened in this case. by Lost_property_ (Fri 7th Jul 2023 9:15am)

  • My first thought was WTF. And it's easy to think that reading the headline. But.." He detailed how a struggle to recruit drivers - despite efforts to diversify the workforce - is the biggest issue in continuing with the night bus services". He's saying the night busses were cut as they don't have the staff (which is a different argument than they're not making money). He then suggests the bar staff become bus drivers so there's enough drivers to staff the busses. I'm all for bringing the busses into public ownership and has had awful experiences with First Bus (had a driver square up to me once for getting on when it wasn't yet in service!), but I think the headline kind of takes what he's saying out of context. by Lost_property_ (Thu 13th Jul 2023 10:13am)
