  • I didn't go to this particular shop, but what you said about the fact that they figures came direct from the US reminded me of what I used to be like with X-Men action figures in the early 90s. I'd discovered X-Men through the cartoon and fucking loved it, I used to spend my pocket money on old issues from Arthur's comics in decoury's arcade off Byres Road and newer ones from Future Shock. I'd sit and spend all day drawing my own versions of the covers. I got as many of the action figures as I could from Woolworths before finding out that forbidden planet sold American ones. It was the most exciting thing ever. They had all sorts of crazy characters that you couldn't get in normal shops, the first one I got was prof. X in his mad hover wheel chair. No one else in my school gave a fuck about X-Men but I was never as happy as when I got to go to forbidden planet and see their wall of exciting figures that you couldn't get anywhere else by Ngilko (Wed 29th Jul 2020 2:40pm)

  • I've rented from the same landlord for the last 8 years. He's an absolute legend, gets anything that needs fixed done quickly, has barely put our rent up in that period (and is massively, and frankly unnecessarily apologetic when he does) has even let us redecorate the place to our taste. I'd be gutted to have to deal with anyone else at this point. by Ngilko (Tue 18th Jan 2022 9:04am)

  • What was the D&D event like? I've only played with friends but I've always been curious about events like this. What's the age profile of folk that go along like? I wouldn't want to be the one guy in his 30s with a bunch of teenagers. by Ngilko (Fri 8th Apr 2022 7:25pm)

  • I guess I must have had one too... That might have been how things were for you but getting randomly jumped thankfully isn't just a fact of life for everyone. Realistically, while it definitely happens, I know far, far more folk that grew up in Glasgow that haven't been randomly jumped than have. by Ngilko (Tue 10th May 2022 7:23pm)
  • I mind a girl I was going out with stayed in murano street halls around that time (fuck sake I'm getting old) and they could see cars burning from their windows every weekend. She moved to woodlands in her second year... by Ngilko (Tue 10th May 2022 7:27pm)
  • Sounds like I'm about the same age as you. The area I grew up in wasn't rough as fuck, but my school had a pretty massive catchment area, with kids from summerston, Ruchill, the barracks, temple as well as posher bits like Kelvindale. I was in plenty of parties in those places or in parks with a bottle of cider. For most of my late teens and twenties I'd be out in town in pubs and clubs and worked in a bunch as well. I'm no stranger to a 3 am bus home. I think if things were the way you were describing for everyone I'd have been jumped 15 times. I've never been jumped in my life, and I don't know really know many folk that have. The best advice for both of us is probably not to assume your experience is the experience everyone has. by Ngilko (Tue 10th May 2022 8:01pm)
  • All I can say is, don't go to LA. If you are this worried about Glasgow, I cannie imagine the state you'd be in walking around there with a red or blue jumper on. by Ngilko (Thu 19th May 2022 10:14am)
  • To be honest, the real question you should be worrying about it, "How good is my blue raincoat?" It rains a fair bit in Glasgow, get a proper waterproof jacket, none of that water-resistant nonsense. Took me 30 years to learn that lesson. by Ngilko (Thu 19th May 2022 10:09am)
  • I remember having a Greenday t-shirt on in school and the guy that sat behind me asked me "would you wear that if it was a blue-day T-Shirt?". Some folk only see the world through the lense of Rangers and Celtic. by Ngilko (Thu 19th May 2022 10:33am)
  • To be fair, it's a pretty fucking important job, as this entire discussion illustrates. If folk can't get where they need to go, things fall apart pretty quick. by Ngilko (Thu 19th May 2022 2:45pm)
  • Oh aye, fuck the workers eh! Eliminating well paid roles for skilled workers that are accessible to people from all backgrounds in favour of automation is a great idea. Can't think of any larger societal consequences to that approach... by Ngilko (Thu 19th May 2022 3:00pm)
  • I'd say that the city center is definitely worse than it used to be 10 years or so ago, with some bits holding up better than others. The city center had been in decline for a long time, but the pandemic has accelerated that process (although I don't think that's an issue unique to Glasgow). In my experience the rest of the city is either better or just the same as it used to be. I live in the southside and work in the West end, and I think both are great places to be, although, If I had to spend large parts of my week in the city center I would probably be much more negative. The city center could probably be improved a lot by switching it from a primarily retail/offfice land use to more of a mixed residential/comercial area which would hopefully have the knock on effect of sorting out housing issues elsewhere in the city. That change won't happen overnight though. by Ngilko (Mon 23rd May 2022 5:11pm)
  • I'm a big fan of the staff of at Warhammer on Union Street, I don't play Warhammer but I took up mini painting 5 years or so ago because I wanted minis for our d&d games. The staff at that store (and Duncan Rhodes videos on YouTube) basically taught me to paint to a pretty good level from complete novice who hadn't held a brush since higher art and hadn't played a tabletop mini game since heroquest. I still pop in when I can't figure out how to do something myself, they have given me some good tips on getting into making terrain. by Ngilko (Mon 30th May 2022 10:52am)

  • It'd be an absolute nightmare if you did end up sick and stuck in your room but honestly, going on a cruise honestly wouldn't stress me out from that point of view. At least you know everyone on the ship is vaccinated, has been tested before you get on, and is being encouraged to sanitise their hands every time they walk into a room. It's more protection than you can rely on in the pub or the subway these days. by Ngilko (Fri 10th Jun 2022 12:37am)
  • If you are starting a PhD you might find that there is a D&D society at your university, I'm fairly certain that UofG and Strathclyde will have a tabletop gaming club/society if not a dedicated D&D club. I'm not sure about UWS/GCU and GSofA but I wouldn't be surprised. I've been running d&d games for my wife and our friends for a good few years now and playing for a bit longer. I can't recommend it enough! It looks like you have a few solid leads to help you find a group and I hope it goes well! by Ngilko (Mon 13th Jun 2022 9:48pm)

  • Unfortunately I think the summer period is probably particularly bad because it's peak time for students speaking accomodation. The intake for the various Glasgow universities is in the tens of thousands and lots of them will be flat hunting. by Ngilko (Fri 15th Jul 2022 7:48am)

  • I take it they would have one of the filter "pot of coffee" machines rather than a full on coffee shop style espresso machine? We've got one at home, and it makes great coffee but it's a bit of a faff and sometimes you just want a quick instant coffee in the morning before you go to work... by Ngilko (Tue 19th Jul 2022 11:57am)

  • It obviously depends where you are travelling from but I commute from Shawlands to byres road by bus/subway and it's really quick, never any drama. I can basically get from one side of the city to the other in 30-45 mins. Bit shite that you can't get a ticket that does both but it's not the end of the world. And if I wasn't lazy as fuck and just walked to Bridge Street it would be cheap as fuck. by Ngilko (Sun 14th Aug 2022 7:51pm)
  • Aye that sounds like an absolute nightmare and it'll just force folk in your situation into cars. Don't get me wrong, our public transport needs to get better, just worth pointing out that it's not universally shite. by Ngilko (Sun 14th Aug 2022 10:37pm)

  • Is there not a skatepark 2 seconds from there? by Ngilko (Sun 21st Aug 2022 3:17pm)
  • Nah, and I say this as someone how skated for years until my ankles hated me too much. This guy was grumpy about getting asked not to damage one of the rare really fucking nice bits of Glasgow when there is a skatepark round the corner. To be fair to him, he's taken in board what folk have been saying, and he's right too. There's plenty of scenarios where people are unfair to skaters but this isn't one of them. by Ngilko (Sun 21st Aug 2022 7:07pm)

  • I think it's gotten more casual since the pandemic too particularly office wear. At least where I work, the only people I ever see in anything approaching a suit are over 50. I'm assuming we all just cannie fit into our pre pandemic office clothes any more. by Ngilko (Sun 28th Aug 2022 7:28pm)
  • Decent pair of water proof boots and an actual waterproof jacket with a hood (not just water resistant). Get some decent thick socks, cosy jumpers, jeans, a decent hat and gloves and you'll be fine. I also like to have lots of big cosy hoodies and joggies/slippers for around the house in winter. Generally speaking in my experience the key to Glasgow winters is proper water proof stuff. And have layers that you can take off when you get indoors, we are generally quite good at heating and insolation which means our houses are really warm in the winter but absolute heat traps in summer. by Ngilko (Sun 28th Aug 2022 7:25pm)
  • Not a bloodbowl player myself (although the minis look great) but I'm really happy to see so many people on the sub Reddit looking for tabletop/board games to play in or looking to get people involved in their existing games. by Ngilko (Tue 30th Aug 2022 7:21pm)

  • Can't really help out with the parenting stuff as I don't have kids but when it comes to not drinking it won't be a big deal to anyone and it won't be weird. I stopped drinking a few years ago because it doesn't interact well with medication that I take and I can't think of a single situation where it's been an issue, it might be a wee bit harder if you are bothered by other people drinking but even then, I don't think it would be that hard to avoid outside of pubs and clubs and gigs. There are more great places to eat than you will probably be able to try in the few months you are here (hopefully other other people can give you some names of the best ones to take kids to!). Glasgow is a great city in terms of keeping kids entertained, and has particularly awesome family focussed museums, lots of parks, sports and so on. The kids won't be bored. You can also get to the center of Edinburgh from the center of Glasgow by train in less than an hour which has even more stuff for kids to do, it's also basically a tourist city so easy to get around. As for getting around the city with kids, busses and trains will get you anywhere you need to go and if you are used to US public transport it will probably be a pleasant surprise. Both are pretty buggy/pram friendly. The underground is a fast way of getting around the city center and West end but it's not great in terms of buggy/pram access (lots of stairs, not enough lifts!). Finally, you mentioned that you are coming in winter, depending on where you are from the weather might be a shock. Days are short, nights are dark and it can be cold and wet. Get yourself and the kids some cosy jumpers and good waterproof boots/jackets to make life more comfortable, get yourself a "sad lamp" and consider talking to your doctor about vitamin D supplements, especially if you are from somewhere like California or Florida (if your from Alaska or Chicago or somewhere equally cold, in which case you'll be fine). Hope that's helps a little and enjoy your time in Glasgow. (You might want to watch some Scottish TV to get used to the accent, it's tricky and we talk fast) by Ngilko (Thu 15th Sep 2022 5:09pm)

  • Just as a wee follow up to the suggestion to give crit role and D20 a watch to get the basics. I'm a big fan of Critical Role and D20 and absolutely recommend giving them a watch. You will get some great examples of top class roleplay from them but it's probably not the best way to get the basics of the game as the DMs very deliberately put entertainment over "the rules". It makes for a great show but it'll probably teach you habits and home brewed rules that you might not see used at the table you end up playing on and just end up confusing you. I hope your hunt for a game goes well and it looks like you've got some pretty good suggestions to get you going with finding a group. In terms of just getting a bit of a headstart on how to play, it probably is worth having a look at the "handbooker helper" series that critical role did. Its basically just a short series of videos to explore the core mechanics of the game and will make the first time you sit down at a table a bit simpler: https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PL1tiwbzkOjQyr6-gqJ8r29j_rJkR49uDN by Ngilko (Thu 6th Oct 2022 8:10pm)

  • Aye, I was in Edinburgh last week for the first time since the pandemic and it's declined a fair bit as well. What it does have is the new shopping center, which is nice, but now Princess Street is starting to look grim as fuck. It's absolutely not just a Glasgow issue, the city center high street makes less and less sense in its current form and the solutions are probably only going to make a difference in the long term. by Ngilko (Wed 19th Oct 2022 9:59am)

  • I work in Paisley and live in Glasgow, the area around the high Street is actually pretty nice, purely from a bricks and mortar point of view and it's a hell of a lot clearer than Glasgow. With the shortage of housing it feels like turning a good chunk of the shop space around there into affordable/middle income housing could do wonders for the area. It's a high street that definitely doesn't need two indoor shopping centers but if you had people that actually lived there you could absolutely support a mixed use/residential/shopping district. by Ngilko (Mon 24th Apr 2023 8:01am)

  • I think the people best placed to answer your question might be former students or alternatively people who work in the sort of job roles (or recruit for the roles) that you might want in future. LinkedIn is a good tool for both! In terms of less industry specific advice, Glasgow University/GSA are traditional institutions which are well respected and prestigious. They are also arguably comparatively traditional with all of the positives and negatives that this would suggest. GCU is a newer university which has a reputation for widening access to university education and courses with a vocational focus. As a third year entrant you might find that GCU as an institution is a little more experienced with students articulating from college/direct entry, although I couldn't say that with certainty. Their reputation is also for being a little more experienced in supporting students from backgrounds where attending university might be less common. Again, that's reputation so your individual experience may vary! I can say from personal experience that they are both good uni's with strengths and weaknesses and I'm sure you will have a great experience which ever you go for. by Ngilko (Wed 26th Apr 2023 12:59pm)

  • It's basically a posh suburb of Glasgow with all of the positives and negatives that entails. The west end and other parts of the city are probably more exciting in terms of entertainment and culture but if you are used to a wee place in the middle of nowhere I can't imagine that will be a huge shock. You'll get plenty of wee family friendly pubs cafes and so on in bearsden/milngavie decent leisure facilities and you will have great access to green space in the form of country parks, some nice wee hill walks etc. If you want anything more specialised, in terms of arts/museums/entertainment and shopping you will probably find yourself going into Glasgow but as suburbs/commuter towns go bearsden and milngavie are probably as good as anywhere else. Work wise, most folk probably commute to Glasgow and it's fairly easy to do there are local employment options as well depending on what you do but obviously, as with culture/services and shopping it's got a pretty good economy for a town of its size but a lot of jobs will still find you travelling to Glasgow. People's wise, very generally it's well to do families and retired folk. You are more likely to get accosted by the local residents association than a gang of young ruffians. It's hardly a hub of bohemian culture but similarly not somewhere you are likely to encounter the sorts of social and economic issues that the greater Glasgow area and most cities will experience. There are, obviously bits of bearsden/milngavie that have their share of social issues but the even those areas don't come close to the issues experienced in some other parts of the greater Glasgow area. It's a pretty desirable place to live all things considered I'd say the worst you will be is bored but that's speaking as someone who has always lived in the city, if you are used to a quieter place you will probably not have that issue! by Ngilko (Mon 15th May 2023 7:20am)
  • being honest, Hillhead isn't the best place to live if you have 3 people in a property each with their own car. • This is incredibly important, we were paying 650 for a 2 bed flat in Shawlands which we started renting in 2013, we had a very fair landlord who made small increases to our rent which matched their costs. Unfortunately they were nearly 80 and decides to sell up and we had to move a couple of months ago. We are now paying just under 800 for a 1 bedroom flat round the corner. It's a slightly nicer flat with a bigger back garden, access to a wee private park etc but still, it illustrates the changes in the market and that if you didn't take up your lease in the last 6 months it's probably not relevant to what OP is asking. If you pay 400 Pcm for a 3 bedroom townhouse in park Circus that you started renting in 19 diggety 2 it's probably not worth commenting. by Ngilko (Sat 10th Jun 2023 10:21am)
  • There's the city of Glasgow and then there's the greater Glasgow conurbation which includes all the areas that you've mentioned. • I could tell you stories like this (and far worse) from the 90s and 2000s and older people would no doubt be able to tell you far, far worse from the 60s, 70s, 80s etc. And although I'm not sitting looking at violent crime figures I'm fairly confident that Glasgow in 2023 is a far less violent city than it has been historically. That said, it still has a tonne of pretty brutal social and economic situations and a decade or so of under investment in public services, major economic downturns and a pandemic won't have helped. Is Glasgow getting worse? Depends when you are comparing it to but taking the long view, no. by Ngilko (Mon 19th Jun 2023 8:33am)
  • That's really sad to hear but unfortunately not totally surprising. I've been a customer and employee of my fair share of comic shops and other nerdy spaces and while most of people are lovely people with families, friends and social awareness there is and always has been an incel-y element going back way before the term was coined. I honestly don't think the staff enjoy hearing that stuff any more than you do but may well not feel safe challenging them (particularly if they are openly LGBTQ+ when violence and violent sentiment towards LGBTQ+ people is depressingly common) or may not feel able to challenge a customer in that way if management aren't supportive and have a "customer is always right" attitude. It might be worth asking to speak to manger and if you don't feel they aren't taking it seriously make a more formal complaint to head office (if they have one!) by Ngilko (Mon 19th Jun 2023 7:39pm)

Be very clear about who will be assessing you, what their qualifications are, give your GP as much info as you can and ask them if it meets NICE guidelines. My employer paid for me to under go a private assessment, which I don't think was cheap. I was very detailed, took place over multiple sessions and took about 4 hours overall, my GP said he didn't consider it a diagnosis because it was carried out by a psychologist rather than a psychiatrist. So I'm back to waiting 2 years for an NHS assessment. At least it was my employers money that was wasted not mine... by Ngilko (Thu 22nd Jun 2023 11:10pm)

  • Student housing is absolutely essential for a number of reasons, firstly to alleviate the massive strain on private rental housing in the city and secondly to rebuild Glasgow city center into a mixed use area where people both live, shop and work. I agree that the public transport situation is a disaster but student housing isn't part of the problem, it's part of the solution. by Ngilko (Mon 10th Jul 2023 10:00am)
  • Frankly, even if you are someone that doesn't directly depend on them but feel strongly about this issue, it's also worth writing. • From that point of view, I'd rather we had one central, safe display in a largely non residential area than 3000 wee ones for 3 weeks before and after as well as wee fannies chucking them in prams and scaring wee dogs left right and center. Bet they could get the money back for the big display from savings on fire service costs if sales/fires were restricted to professionals only... by Ngilko (Sat 29th Jul 2023 11:21am)

  • Late to the party but go to the GFT if the film you want to see is on at it, better to give your money to them than Vue or Cineworld. It's also a beautiful old cinema. If money is no object the Everyman in princess square is always a brilliant experience as well. by Ngilko (Thu 3rd Aug 2023 8:30am)
  • There's literally a guy in these comments saying his band did an album cover shoot in this alley decade ago. I doubt they picked it because it was a nice, tidy and well presented alley. Glasgow has had areas like this for at least the 40 odd years I've lived here and if you go back and look at photos from before that you'll see plenty of it then too. The way people talk about Glasgow here you would think it was streets paved with gold ten or fifteen years ago only too suddenly turn into Detroit overnight. by Ngilko (Thu 3rd Aug 2023 5:28pm)
  • It's a pretty shite looking alley but .... It's an alley. Probably looked not much different 10 years ago, and it'll probably look the same 10 years from now. by Ngilko (Thu 3rd Aug 2023 5:22pm)
  • Up until the war from what I've seen there was pretty much naebody in Chernobyl other than tourists. Lots of soviet era building being reclaimed by nature and a surprising amount of wildlife. It all added up to a weird sort of beauty. Wouldn't catch me going for my summer holidays mind you. by Ngilko (Thu 3rd Aug 2023 5:35pm)

  • I'm ancient so I spent a lot of my childhood going into the shop at the bottom of byres road. Early 90s, got stuff like Jim lees X-Men, and the Age of Apocalypse, old 80s back issues and imported Ninja Turtles toys. Still have those Jim Lee X-Men. by Ngilko (Sun 20th Aug 2023 9:24pm)
  • My two early experiences of comic shop owners as a wee boy in the early 90's was Arthur from Arthur's in decourcy's arcade (lovely man!) and the guy from future shock (grumpy as fuck) and in a lot of ways I think that combination was perfect. by Ngilko (Mon 21st Aug 2023 7:12am)
  • I had a standing order for X-Men When I was wee. He would put entire multi title crossover events with dozens of titles in my file and try and try and and convince my mum that this was what she had agreed to buy. Nah mate, I don't need Gambit and the Externals or X-man. Cheeky bastard. by Ngilko (Mon 21st Aug 2023 7:18am)
  • CA games, Arthur's comics and Lost in Music were the trinity of my childhood/teenage years. Got my first X-Men comic in Arthur's, first Dead Kennedy's album in Lost in Music and an import copy of pokemon blue from CA games (fighters megamix as well!). by Ngilko (Mon 4th Sep 2023 12:23pm)

  • The massive shortage of student accomodation in Glasgow due to the uncontrolled expansion in university student numbers by the cities universities (but particularly UOFG) is a huge contributing factor to the current spike in rental costs for non students. This is an incredibly foolish decision which only makes sense if there is an alternative viable proposal on the table to build no student affordable accomodation. by Ngilko (Tue 28th Nov 2023 8:50pm)
  • My gran and grandad would have said pictures, they would be close to 90 today if they were still alive. My mum and dad (late 60s) might have said pictures when they were younger but would definitely say cinema today. For what it's worth I'm in my 30s and I can't remember the last time I actually heard someone say pictures and I don't think i've ever heard anyone of my generation say it. I'd say "I'm going to see a film" or "I'm going to the cinema" but never "I'm going to the pictures". by Ngilko (Wed 6th Dec 2023 5:37pm)

  • Get an actual waterproof jacket with a hood (not water resistant) and wear layers underneath depending on how cold it is. Big wooly jumpers are your friend. You can add thermal t-shirts and such if you are still struggling. I think puffers probably aren't that great as they don't tend to be water proof, in Glasgow the issue is that it's often as wet as it is cold, same with parkas. I'd focus on actual outdoor brands if you can afford it. You won't need it every day, but on the days you do need it you will be greatful for it. In terms of boots, I got a pair of shoe the bear boots a few years ago that are pretty warm, and they have lasted well, look decent and don't let loads of water, anything reasonably sensible and leather will be fine buy the best quality you can afford and get some cosy wool socks for underneath. by Ngilko (Sun 10th Dec 2023 2:16am)

  • My humble opinion is that a puffer isn't the best jacket for Glasgow, if you like them and want one for fashion, fair enough but they are only really useful on the rare cool but dry days. Your most common Glasgow winter weather is wet, so if you are going to be going anything more than living home to car to work you need something to keep the rain out more days than not. So aye, buy a puffer if you like them and can buy multiple jackets but the actual useful one in Glasgow will be a proper outdoor waterproof (once again check it's actually labelled as waterproof not water resistant, there's a big difference on a wet day in Glasgow and nothing makes a cold day worse than being wet). The one I wear is actually a snowboarding brand called planks, and it doesn't let a single bit of rain through even on the wettest days. It's also pretty damm warm. Generally speaking outdoor brands like Berghaus/Northface are great if you have the money but in all honesty, its less about the brand more about it's ability to keep the rain out. Look here, this is the sort of thing you want: https://www.blacks.co.uk/mens/mens-clothing/jackets-coats/waterproof-jackets/ Also, once again get decent boots: nothing more miserable than having soaking wet feet on a cold day. by Ngilko (Sun 10th Dec 2023 2:50pm)
