  • Are you looking for somewhere meeting in a public setting - games club etc - or some new geeky mates to meet and play in someone’s flat? by elizabethunseelie (Mon 11th Feb 2019 2:07pm)
  • I think the Scottish Design Exchange has some - they have general greeting cards at least. They're made by local artists and are pretty varied. by elizabethunseelie (Tue 12th Feb 2019 8:08am)
  • Second floor I think :) by elizabethunseelie (Tue 12th Feb 2019 8:30am)
  • It does sound fun. Other than pubs you might find some folk via the Category Is Books(south side LGBT bookshop) RPG night. For a venue for folk to meet for the first few games and see who fits together the Glasgow Women's Library hires out space (I don’t know their view on RPG but hey it’s a kind of women’s storytelling), I’ve played some games in The Govanhill baths space a whole back, R-Cade might be fun nearer the city centre, or you can also hire small rooms in Glasgow council community halls from about £10 an hour. by elizabethunseelie (Tue 12th Feb 2019 12:36pm)
  • The Sharmanka Kinetic Theatre might be something you like, they’re closed on Mon/Tues but have shows on the rest of the week. It’s also round the corner from the Panopticon - the world’s oldest surviving music hall - which is well worth a look. by elizabethunseelie (Wed 13th Mar 2019 11:25am)
  • My parents are in Elderslie, it is a nice village - quiet, good primary school but lacks a lot of public transport links (there's no train station etc) and depending on your kids age you'd need to go to one of the nearby towns for high school. by elizabethunseelie (Mon 18th Mar 2019 10:11pm)
  • Really depends on how much you like it. The south side is a bit pricey but if you love the place enough then go for it. by elizabethunseelie (Tue 16th Apr 2019 7:58am)
  • I doubt it tbh, especially with the Water Row plans just up the road in Govan. by elizabethunseelie (Tue 28th May 2019 4:31pm)
  • I know Rodgers on Byres Road does good steaks, but it’s a bit pricey. by elizabethunseelie (Wed 29th May 2019 3:42pm)
  • I don’t see why there’s a whole season. No one else gets multiple marches for anything. Have one and be done with it. by elizabethunseelie (Sat 8th Jun 2019 1:46pm)
  • It went 20% over in Ibrox two years ago, worth it to me because I love the flat but the fact I had to go that far above the value came as a shock. by elizabethunseelie (Fri 14th Jun 2019 8:09am)
  • Yeah, it’s a big tenement flat with all the original internal glass and fireplaces so worth it. I’d started off looking in Partick but that was a goddamn nightmare. Anywhere decent was sold even before it opened up for viewing. by elizabethunseelie (Fri 14th Jun 2019 8:32am)
  • The explanation on the departures board is oddly passive ‘Due to a fire alarm sounding’. Eh no, that makes it sound like someone pulled it for a laugh, one of your trains was vomiting out smoke dammit. by elizabethunseelie (Tue 18th Jun 2019 9:05am)
  • By club do you mean a new subreddit or actually meeting folk and such? by elizabethunseelie (Thu 4th Jul 2019 7:13pm)
  • So do you want a particular genre or type of writing (short story, screen writing, novels) in that case? by elizabethunseelie (Thu 4th Jul 2019 7:23pm)
  • Aye could be fun. by elizabethunseelie (Thu 4th Jul 2019 7:21pm)
  • Well no one is bulldozing the Victorian buildings that are so lovely and the parts of the city mentioned are in desperate need of a revamp. Suchiehall street was getting pretty dire even before half of it burned down. I just hope it encourages a mix of uses, a cleaned up or new build and place with another load of pound shops and shitey tourist tat places would be a real waste. by elizabethunseelie (Thu 11th Jul 2019 7:24am)
  • Don’t forget Wonderwall... fucking Wonderwall. by elizabethunseelie (Fri 26th Jul 2019 10:25am)
  • I’m surprised it’s a demolition order and restoration isn’t being attempted. Tenements are normally solidly built and in demand compared to new builds - but then if the council wants it maybe demolition is cheaper or new builds generate a bit of cash. Something needs to be done though, it’s been horrific for years. by elizabethunseelie (Fri 26th Jul 2019 2:39pm)
  • Ah, yeah don’t fuck with damp or a lack of structural integrity. It’s a shame they were allowed to degrade so much. by elizabethunseelie (Fri 26th Jul 2019 4:34pm)
  • Yup, they also eat the moths that would try and gorge on my winter jumpers. I will have safe warm shelter to any arachnid friends who’ll save me from freezing to death in the winter. Seriously though, fuck moths. by elizabethunseelie (Fri 30th Aug 2019 3:28pm)
  • Citation is nice, and has a few comfy chairs. That’s if she likes cocktails really. by elizabethunseelie (Fri 30th Aug 2019 8:47pm)
  • Good on the Police for stopping it pouring out into Ibrox as well though. But the fact this shite is even still happening is fucking maddening. by elizabethunseelie (Sat 31st Aug 2019 7:26am)
  • You know Alan Moore thinks he's a wizard. He might put a curse on eijits nicking his stuff for real world fascism :/ Would do fuck of course but might spook a few idiots. by elizabethunseelie (Sat 31st Aug 2019 7:30am)
  • Can we just ban any march that involves, or has at any point ever involved, a fucking flute? by elizabethunseelie (Sat 31st Aug 2019 7:50am)
  • A squirrel break into my parents house and attach the family cat. That seemed like a right evil wee bastard. by elizabethunseelie (Sat 31st Aug 2019 8:44am)
  • If you want something a little out of the norm Dr Sketchy is great fun, a burlesque life drawing event. It’s only on once every three months these days but it’s great fun. by elizabethunseelie (Tue 17th Sep 2019 1:59pm)
  • Depends on what you’re looking for, if you’re going for basically high end vintage or swanky hipster male fashion then the West End is your best bet. Byres Road has a lot. Heading down towards Partick things get a bit cheaper. For furniture (in case you need some since you’re just moving here) there’s a few shops in the city centre, at the back end of the St Enoch Centre, but again Partick has the British Heart Foundation and Salvation Army shops as well. by elizabethunseelie (Tue 24th Sep 2019 12:38pm)
  • Yup, it’s a pain in the arse for anyone in a flat. The nearest bottle bank to me hardly ever seems to be emptied which just compounds the issue. by elizabethunseelie (Wed 25th Sep 2019 10:35am)
  • Renfrew is close but you won’t find any tourist stuff there really. You might find something with the Renfrew coat of arms in one of the Glasgow tourist shops though. by elizabethunseelie (Mon 7th Oct 2019 12:44pm)
  • Hot lemonade with honey is a good go to cough relief drink. Add whisky or rum if you wanna knock yourself out for some sweet sweet unconsciousness. by elizabethunseelie (Tue 8th Oct 2019 11:41pm)
  • That could work, but you lose the fizziness which helps clear the throat a bit. by elizabethunseelie (Wed 9th Oct 2019 8:37am)
  • I lived in London for a while, it’s a city full of cool stuff to do but holy fuck I was glad to come home. For less than the price of renting one room in a house with more than an hours commute to work, I now have a three bed flat within walking distance of three beautiful parks, plenty of cool places to hang out with my friends, and money to spend on the theatre and art stuff I love. My quality of life went from unwilling vow of poverty to actually able to have fun rather than staring up at the ceiling at 3am panicking about cash. The litter problem and the fucking flute bands can feck off, other than that I’d rather live here than anywhere. by elizabethunseelie (Fri 18th Oct 2019 5:06pm)
  • At what point can the council force a purchase order to save buildings like this? Buy it and make it useful for the public good somehow rather than let it crumble. by elizabethunseelie (Sun 20th Oct 2019 5:53pm)
  • Well then, if it can’t be put to any sensible use then yes the best thing would be to replace it with something that benefits the city. Rotting buildings being the place right down. But it would be nice to at least save some of the sculptures on the facade. Put them in a museum or recycle them into some form of street sculpture. by elizabethunseelie (Mon 21st Oct 2019 10:27am)
  • Every time the council asks about what we want George Square the public response is - more grass, some trees would also be nice. I hope they actually listen this time. by elizabethunseelie (Mon 28th Oct 2019 11:45am)
  • And the ever present scaffolding doesnae help. That cunt who’s waiting for the council to repair the Egyptian Halls so he can get all the profit needs a cactus in the eye. by elizabethunseelie (Wed 30th Oct 2019 9:53am)
  • I remember going down it once and it shoggled like fuck. It was closed off not long after. The mushy peas were enough reason still to go in my childhood though. They could be easily spoon-flicked at siblings. by elizabethunseelie (Sun 10th Nov 2019 8:51am)
  • Fair enough, rename them. But it’s never gonna be as good as renaming the square where the South African consulate was to Nelson Mandela Place. Gotta love that righteous sarkiness that is the beating heart of our fair city. by elizabethunseelie (Sun 10th Nov 2019 11:39am)
  • Who is your mum’s factor? And do you have documentation from them regarding what is covered by them? by elizabethunseelie (Mon 18th Nov 2019 5:52pm)
  • My parents took my brother and I to that, our first concert. I was 5 and my brother 7, and we slept through most of it. My dad remembers at the end there was a big booming announcement that ‘Michael Jackson has left the stadium’... but we were in a park. All these years later he still happily mocks that fecking announcement. by elizabethunseelie (Fri 6th Dec 2019 10:34pm)
  • Here you go - https://www.google.co.uk/amp/s/www.spookyisles.com/glasgows-11-most-terrifying-subway-hauntings/ - underground ghosts. And there was some vampire hysteria in the 1920s when I load of kids thought there was a vampire with iron teeth lurking in the southern necropolis, for their minds had been warped by comic books and such. by elizabethunseelie (Mon 9th Dec 2019 11:33pm)
  • SNP for the general but I throw my vote to The Greens when I can. Having to stop absolute lunacy doesn’t feel like democracy though, just desperation. by elizabethunseelie (Tue 10th Dec 2019 7:27pm)

  • Sad thing is they used to be worth breaking in. Now with their pishy ‘illusion’ leather they break down as soon as their broken in. by elizabethunseelie (Wed 8th Jan 2020 10:07am)
  • No but my brother has and he rates them highly. When I’m not skint I’m definitely gonna check them out. by elizabethunseelie (Wed 8th Jan 2020 11:17am)
  • Well there’s the setting for a movie series that progressively more shite with ever instalment. ‘It didn’t burn by accident’ *insert pounding drums and shots of the house aflame ‘We had to stop what he started! *cut to eerie music box style music and generic demon shadow looming over a blonde kid.* This thing writes itself. But we need Brian Cox to play a hammy as fuck Crowley. by elizabethunseelie (Wed 15th Jan 2020 1:06pm)
  • You're not alone, the place is bit of a state and with the big department shops shutting you're going to be seeing a few more big gaps. Hopefully there are plans to shake things up though. by elizabethunseelie (Sun 19th Jan 2020 6:35pm)
  • Never gonna happen but I wish they’d turn the M8 into something like the High Line in New York. The amount of pollution coming from the motorway, and right into our lungs, is fucking atrocious. Having a giant park in the city centre would be so much better. Sigh. by elizabethunseelie (Thu 23rd Jan 2020 9:30am)
  • Like they do in Edinburgh, or most cities, have it stop at the outskirts of the city, put in a bypass road for people not stopping in the city itself, and then people actually coming into town come off at roundabouts or junctions and feed into the regular road networks. by elizabethunseelie (Thu 23rd Jan 2020 1:05pm)
  • You will still hear some cunt drawling Wonderwall on occasion though. Sorry, by elizabethunseelie (Fri 31st Jan 2020 10:24pm)
  • Ibrox - called and asked the council about it 6 times now. Always told I’ll get a call next week. Time is relative sadly,.. I can only assume a week is a year in council time. by elizabethunseelie (Fri 31st Jan 2020 10:27pm)
  • And much more Korean barbecue :) by elizabethunseelie (Fri 31st Jan 2020 10:25pm)

  • For Whisky, The Pot Still. And if you get a chance to go to Mother India be damn sure to take it. by elizabethunseelie (Fri 7th Feb 2020 10:56pm)
  • The Sharmanka Kinetic Theatre is pretty cool, and they let you take photos for the sculptures pre-show - handy if you need an indoor, non-soggy activity. by elizabethunseelie (Tue 18th Feb 2020 5:19pm)
  • I don’t mind paying more tax if it helps the city, but the inconsistency in waste disposal and recycling. In tenements we have no garden bin or glass bin, and one blue bin between two flats - so six folk in my case. Whereas in the houses across the road, they have a full contingent of bins and only 3-4 people using them. We pay just as much tax for less of a service. And a lot of the time we see missed collections. Litters a huge problem across the city - mainly cause we have so many clatty bastards about, let’s be fair, but also because there are not enough bins on the streets and the ones that aren’t there aren’t emptied enough. If the tax increase went to sorting that out it would be a real boon, but if there’s no improvement then people are gonna be angry about it. by elizabethunseelie (Fri 21st Feb 2020 2:15pm)
  • Good, take it back from that festering wee cunt blister who’s let it rot for so long. I’m not sure which of the proposals I’d choose - but not private business pish after all this back and forth. Museum, school, even the agora idea would be better than some corporate meeting rooms. by elizabethunseelie (Mon 24th Feb 2020 11:15am)
  • Fuck off - they said lovingly. Tis the Glasgow way. by elizabethunseelie (Mon 24th Feb 2020 7:26pm)
  • Sharmanka Kinetic Theatre, I always recommend that for people looking for cool weird stuff. by elizabethunseelie (Mon 2nd Mar 2020 11:43am)
  • A friend in Japan told me a rumour had gone around there that most toilet paper was made in China and so it would run out because no one could make it under quarantine. Is that the same thing here or a different kind of silly? by elizabethunseelie (Sun 8th Mar 2020 1:58pm)
  • The council removed our food bin, never supplied glass bins to tenements at all and we’ve never had a garden waste bin either. Fucks sake. by elizabethunseelie (Mon 16th Mar 2020 2:25pm)
  • Now hang on, I find this incredibly offensive! Papa Lazarou was not only incredibly powerful, but an amazingly effective leader of his demon circus. Comparing him to de Pfeffel is simply outrageous! by elizabethunseelie (Tue 17th Mar 2020 1:57pm)
  • Cheers - Glasgow live being handy for once, strange times indeed. by elizabethunseelie (Sun 22nd Mar 2020 10:55am)
  • Just a wee app recommendation my dad likes - CozZo, food tracker. It was meant to help people eliminate food waste, but basically keeps track of all the food and other shopping in your house - what you have, what’s about to go off, what you need to repurchase soon. It is a bit of a pain to set up, but it’s handy to when you’re trying to keep track of what you really need and are thinking about how to beat use the food you have. It apparently also recommends recipes but dad doesn’t rate that as it always seems to suggested you need one or two extra wee things :/ There’s websites that are better for suggesting how to use the stuff you actually have to hand. by elizabethunseelie (Mon 23rd Mar 2020 8:16am)
  • Thankfully my Mum's a former nurse and my Dad's the one I inherited all my general paranoia from, so they're taking it seriously. My teenage nephew is being a right wee stupid cunt about it though. Can I go to a party? Fuck no you can't, you've got a PS4 and the best damn wifi money can buy, stay in a shout abuse at your friends as you blow their heads off like a responsible human being. by elizabethunseelie (Mon 23rd Mar 2020 10:33am)
  • Went to the shops today after avoiding for a lot as possible. Quiet and well stocked, thank feck it seems to have settled down for now. Also, Tiger King is worth a binge on Netflix. Holy fuck our fellow humans are weird. by elizabethunseelie (Sun 29th Mar 2020 4:09pm)
  • Sardine oil... by elizabethunseelie (Sun 29th Mar 2020 4:39pm)
  • SEC being set up as a hospital, I wonder how they’re gonna go about it? Pre-fab structures brought into the big halls? At least the wee restaurant could be used to get the staff properly fed while they’re working there, assuming they get it operational again. by elizabethunseelie (Mon 30th Mar 2020 12:49pm)
  • You would really need to get a professional to check it out. I get my (non-functioning) chimneys swept once a year to clear out lose soot and grit, and my sweep tells me all kinds of horror stories. His poor sister had a downstairs neighbour who decided it would be romantic to have a real fire going - filled her entire flat with smoke and ruined everything she owned. When chimneys have been blocked off the smoke has to go somewhere. by elizabethunseelie (Wed 1st Apr 2020 9:55am)
  • I like the goth piper. Sometimes joined by his fire eater pal. by elizabethunseelie (Thu 21st May 2020 2:57pm)

  • I work (when there’s not a pandemic on), right by the river. Basically if a seal turns up it’s the adult equivalent of a dog coming into the school yard. Work stops and we’re all up at the windows with unrestrained childish glee. by elizabethunseelie (Mon 25th May 2020 10:49am)
  • How about Kay street? Jackie Kay is a wonderful poet. Rename a street and put down some new paving stones with a poem in them to mark the occasion. by elizabethunseelie (Sun 7th Jun 2020 5:09pm)
  • I don’t think it depicts a particular person, just some Victorian decoration really. Might have a tie in to some mythology or symbolism but it’s just there to make a posh gaff look nice :/ by elizabethunseelie (Thu 11th Jun 2020 12:54pm)
  • That looks epic, but I’d love to see a version using the old subway trains like they have in the riverside. The trains with the stained glass are so pretty. by elizabethunseelie (Wed 17th Jun 2020 9:18am)
  • If it does close it would be good to see some businesses move to Paisley or other towns instead. Big out of town shopping centres like that are death to a lot of wee high streets. by elizabethunseelie (Fri 26th Jun 2020 3:55pm)
  • Is that not a sign of the apocalypse? by elizabethunseelie (Mon 29th Jun 2020 2:47pm)
  • Well fuck now I’m embarrassed for the city. by elizabethunseelie (Fri 10th Jul 2020 12:13pm)
  • Death metal is fine, I’ve found nothing makes the point about noise nuisance with neighbours than playing Rammstein at a volume that matches their techno pish. by elizabethunseelie (Sun 12th Jul 2020 3:05pm)
  • All looking good. It would be nice to clean up and redevelop some of Tradeston and Ibrox too, there’s a big patch of land gone to waste in Summertown that would make a nice public park, and plenty of tumble down buildings and empty units that could be brought back to life and do so much good for the area. by elizabethunseelie (Tue 21st Jul 2020 11:06pm)
  • Aye, save the pretty sandstone, fuck the concrete prison-scape shite. by elizabethunseelie (Wed 22nd Jul 2020 12:38pm)
  • Get one that isn’t either a lazy hunter or sadistic bastard. Mine would find mice from outside and bring them into the house, presenting them to me so I could kill them myself. The little moggy was always so fucking pleased with herself as she watched me chasing traumatised field mice around my bedroom. Lucky for her she was cute. On the days when she could be arsed finishing the job she’d either bring me just a mouse head, or a mouse arse. And always, always, aim to drop them on the rug rather than the easier to clean wood bit of the floor. by elizabethunseelie (Wed 12th Aug 2020 11:17am)
  • Might be an interior water pipe too. The gutters at the back of my tenement have exterior pipes, but one at the front is internal. by elizabethunseelie (Wed 12th Aug 2020 11:46am)
  • Well, I can respect that :) Sports Direct deserves nobody’s money. by elizabethunseelie (Thu 13th Aug 2020 6:14pm)
  • Yeah that all sounds sketchy as fuck. She should definitely not resign as they ask, they are in the wrong and someone’s trying to cover their arse. by elizabethunseelie (Tue 18th Aug 2020 4:37pm)
  • My dad loves a chance to break out the kilt, but the women in our family don’t go in for that annoying real Scotsman shite. Leave the men in peace to enjoy the chance to wear a knife in their sock and do a wee twirl as they get ready. My dad also loves the sporran - it’s like Batman’s utility belt, but fuzzy. by elizabethunseelie (Fri 21st Aug 2020 12:08pm)
  • Oh yes she did, with a lot of Scottish folk pouring in to add all appropriate swear words to the judgment. by elizabethunseelie (Fri 21st Aug 2020 4:40pm)

  • One of my neighbours hung their bike up on e stairs and the handlebar sticking through nearly kneecapped me. Keep it inside if you can, they can be a hell of an obstruction if people need to get out fast in an emergency or need to use the banisters. by elizabethunseelie (Wed 2nd Sep 2020 4:31pm)

  • When trying to explain to my American friends why people still love tenements so much, it’s usually showing them the tiles and stained glass in the closes that makes them understand. We’re lucky to have so many wee treasures around the city. by elizabethunseelie (Tue 20th Oct 2020 10:44am)
  • In non COVID days it would be a couple of quid in cash, now I tip via Uber eats and it’s at least 10% of the order cost. Things are shit right now, I’m gonna be nice to folk bringing me food. by elizabethunseelie (Tue 20th Oct 2020 10:46am)
  • From the laughter and squealing I heard outside my window earlier I’m sure some teenagers were lighting a rocket out of someone’s arse... don’t clog up A&E in a pandemic with that shite for fucks sake. by elizabethunseelie (Wed 4th Nov 2020 11:27pm)
  • Bellahouston park has a hidden rose garden in the wooded area and a sunken ruined gateway from the the demolished house. The roses will be a bit tatty this time of year but that might add to the goth aesthetic. by elizabethunseelie (Thu 12th Nov 2020 7:32am)
  • First, I’m sorry you’re going through this. If you’re renting, and feel unsafe, it might be best to move somewhere you feel more secure. Dennistoun is lovely, but if you’re looking for somewhere a bit cheaper to stay until the plague times are behind us maybe give Ibrox a try. There’s some nice old tenement flats going at the moment, and since there’s no football it’s been really quiet for months. It’s not the best served in terms of shops, but it’s not felt unsafe during all this. by elizabethunseelie (Sun 22nd Nov 2020 12:33pm)

  • Wine, Final Fantasy 7 replay for pure nostalgia, more wine, and some tablet for the sake of tradition. There will also be Timewarp playing at midnight, after Auld Lang Syne. by elizabethunseelie (Thu 31st Dec 2020 8:33pm)
  • My friend worked with the architecture company that converted the building into flats back int be day. She always warned me never to consider a place there. She said the walls were paper thin, the motorway noise was invasive and the shared interior areas had distinctly Stephen King evil hotel feel to them. Also, it’s shit for transport and access to shops. by elizabethunseelie (Thu 21st Jan 2021 11:36am)
  • I’m in a tenement... we don’t even get glass pick up. by elizabethunseelie (Fri 5th Feb 2021 10:12pm)
  • Gumtree makes me incredibly uneasy. Selling animals for hundreds of pounds with no background checks or regulations? It would make me worry for the animals being bred. by elizabethunseelie (Mon 8th Feb 2021 2:16pm)
  • Ground floor flats can be pretty damn cold in the winter, and sometimes they don’t get a huge out of light. If you’re keen on the top floor one though, check the condition of the roof. If the roof is knackered and you’re relying on a factor to fix it, you’re gonna have a rough time of it. by elizabethunseelie (Mon 1st Mar 2021 9:09pm)
  • A lot of old tenements have two old cupboards knocked through to make a new kitchen, and the kitchen becomes another bedroom as it becomes ,ore profitable. So you end up with those awful, fully enclosed kitchens with no windows or natural light. Plus, no lovely deep cupboards any more. It’s a real shame. by elizabethunseelie (Thu 4th Mar 2021 12:17pm)
  • I would support the preservation of the tenements, not just because I find them lovely to look at, which I do, but because a lot of the have been well built. I’m lucky to live in one that’s in fairly good nick. Once you had double glazing and efficient heating systems in place they can be brilliant. Big windows for natural light, and unless some bloody developer has knocked old cupboards together to squeeze a kitchen into, the spaces can be pretty generous. I don’t think all could be saved, and some have been knocked about so much over time all the benefits have been lost. But we should save and update what we can. They really are part of the fabric of the city. This is personal of course but I think they look bloody gorgeous, especially when you see them in the sunset and the red or blonde sandstone has a warm glow to it. by elizabethunseelie (Thu 4th Mar 2021 12:24pm)
  • Trick is to look for ones with good bones - no damp and so on - but that are really outdated decor wise. It’s weird, but people pay more for a nice looking flat with gutters from hell than one that needs a decor overall but is safe from the elements. by elizabethunseelie (Thu 4th Mar 2021 12:37pm)
  • My grandparents liked the kitchen beds when they were little. Warm through the winter and they got given sugary tea while all wrapped up in blankets. Horrendous in terms of hygiene but they had seriously nostalgia for those days. by elizabethunseelie (Thu 4th Mar 2021 2:04pm)

  • I really missed Borders when it shut. It was a great place to hang out late if you didn’t drink as a teen. Coffee shop open till ten, biggest section of art books in the city, weird niche magazines on the stands and just a pretty chill atmosphere all round. I got so many art books and comics back in the day - and my dad got me the complete Father Ted scripts and rattled off a few scenes with the guy at the till as the stuff was being rung up. by elizabethunseelie (Wed 10th Mar 2021 11:44am)
  • There’s a few big empty plots in Ibrox near Summerton Road that have big grass areas but have turned into a magnet for all kinds of rubbish. It would be great to see them turned into something beautiful and useful to people. The stadium and industrial stuff dominates the place, but it’s depressing as fuck to look at every day. Cleaning it up and making it beautiful and useful could be a boon to the area. So long as you’ve got folk who can stop it becoming a litter dumping ground again. by elizabethunseelie (Wed 10th Mar 2021 11:50am)

  • If the fans can’t behave, then call it off. We’re trying to get out of the damn pandemic, the selfishness of a few people shouldn’t keep the rest of us from finally getting back to some semblance of normality. by elizabethunseelie (Thu 11th Mar 2021 12:26pm)
  • I use Gumtree for furniture and such, the in the first lockdown I saw a sudden rush of ads for puppies and kittens. Puppies for sale for a couple of grand and kittens for up to £900. No references, no checks on seller or buyer. All I could think about is how much exploitation could be running rampant when there’s so much money at stake and so little regulation. And I have a horrible suspicion that even a lot of the healthy animals won’t fair well, rescue centres are bound to see a rush of pets that people took them on and no longer want them when life returns to normal. by elizabethunseelie (Tue 16th Mar 2021 11:40am)

  • God I loved that place when me and my brother were wee. I got my favourite toy there when I was little, a weird drawing box where you could draw pictures made up of little lights. The lady who showed it to me and my mum was incredibly kind and let me try it out, showing how to draw pictures and change the colours of the lights - she drew a blocky kind of rainbow elephant. The fact people really seemed to care and enjoy making the place magic for weans was just so lovely. I wish there was somewhere like this I could take my nephew these days. by elizabethunseelie (Tue 23rd Mar 2021 4:47pm)

  • I’ve found it absolute great. I’ve lived on my own in a couple of parts of the city (flatmates are a mixed blessing) and never felt at risk. Take any sensible precautions you’d take in any city and you’ll be fine. • Meh, my tenement had a similar clause - ours also stipulated absolutely no songbirds. I assume budgies were something of a Victorian menace. But I wouldn’t worry, it’s such an antiquated clause it wouldn’t be enforceable. Only two flats in the building don’t have any pets, I think your puppy will be fine. Just don’t be a dick about it shitting in the back court. by elizabethunseelie (Thu 24th Jun 2021 3:19pm)

  • Match days are a bit of a pain, but other than that the area isn’t too bad. You’re near Bellahouston Park which is lovely, there are a few nice places to eat and a couple of decent pubs - the Old Tollbooth is good fun - and your handy for a lot of public transport links. There is a little issue, but a lot of Glasgow has that issue and it’s maddening. Also, there’s been a spate of old flats been bought up and fixed up for rent recently, and done to a nice standard - instagramable flats for students and young professionals. I think people are hoping the upcoming bridge to the west end in Govan will spur a wee bit of gentrification. All in all, I’d be more concerned about the year long lease. As others have said here it’s not legal here, nor are holding fees or any other costs up front other than a deposit. The Shelter website has a good breakdown of tenants rights in Scotland so check it out in case you have any other grievances you may not realise yet. by elizabethunseelie (Fri 1st Oct 2021 3:14pm)

  • Sounds good to me, with the Hydro and stuff there is it really being pushed as an entertainment district so some more riverside development would do the city good. A lot of the riverside is pretty depressing compared to other cities. by elizabethunseelie (Tue 5th Oct 2021 11:16am)
  • Goldseal were great in my experience. Really good quality windows and the guys putting them in were super quick and efficient. by elizabethunseelie (Wed 6th Oct 2021 8:38am)
  • I am interested in any proposals but there are so many conflicting things I’ve heard about heat pumps and older houses. Electric cars seem like a much simpler change, but I think there needs to be a raft of changes for tenements. There’s a few things as someone who lives in a tenement I’m confused about - what should I replace a boiler with? Should I ditch radiators for underfloor heating or does that work better in places with lower ceilings? How do we push forward with making the building more eco-friendly and energy efficient when the factor won’t even agree to put in a new front door? Quite apart from the most expansive and invasive upgrades, could people be given grants to access basic fixes like thermal curtains or fixing up insulation under floorboards or putting good quality carpet in? There’s a lot to discuss and I’d love to see everything that could be done. by elizabethunseelie (Tue 19th Oct 2021 5:20pm)
  • Out of interest how big a space under a shared garden might be needed? Sounds like it would be a promising solution so long as factors and private landlords don’t bitch about sharing space in a back court. by elizabethunseelie (Tue 19th Oct 2021 5:28pm)

  • It would be interesting to know if the refits are also looking at things like sound insulation at the same time. • She has a car, I do not. So she grabs stuff from me if I’m getting to the point of having a recyclable mountain in the flat and throws a few things in with her stuff. by elizabethunseelie (Tue 9th Nov 2021 12:40pm)
  • Fair enough, I know there was old ash used as a kind of sound proofing in the old days, it just seemed that if a place was going to be torn up you might as well see if you can make them better to live in with things like sound proofing. by elizabethunseelie (Wed 10th Nov 2021 11:53am)
  • Being frank, match day is noisy and there is a problem with fans leaving litter around, but the police presence means there’s not really trouble. For people that can deal with it, Ibrox has a few benefits - still pretty cheap, there’s couple of decent pubs, a few nice places to eat (Cherry and Heather does lovely satay) and it’s really near Bellahouston park which is great for dogs. That said, the street your on can make a big deal of difference on match day. I live in a side street in Ibrox, I would not want to live on say Copeland Road due to matches and marches as a lot of the more disruptive crowd congregate near the stadium and the Loudon - especially bad if the flat your looking at still has single glazing. by elizabethunseelie (Fri 12th Nov 2021 10:48am)
  • I don’t see why they can’t have both? Trees and landscaping make a hell of a difference to a place, and if they want people to hang about (and spend money, they really want folk to spend money) they have to make it nice. by elizabethunseelie (Fri 19th Nov 2021 2:40pm)
  • When there isn’t a plague, I work near the river. If someone spots a seal in the Clyde it’s like the grown up version of a dog getting into the school playground. Everyone pressed up against the windows gawking at it :) by elizabethunseelie (Tue 23rd Nov 2021 10:54am)

  • If you have really good thermal curtains and the frames are in good nick you can managed, but I replaced singled glazed with double as soon as I could afford it and it made it much more comfortable to live in. I wouldn’t go back to a single glazed place, and if you’re on a ground floor flat in a tenement it would be even worse as they are the coldest in the block. by elizabethunseelie (Fri 26th Nov 2021 9:53pm)
  • [Gold Seal](https://www.goldsealwindowsscotland.com) did mine earlier this year. Really fast installation, the guy who took me through all the options was helpful and not at all pushy or trying to upsell me, and they had no issues with all my windows being slightly different sizes from room to room. It was just under a grand per window for me, but I don’t know much my weird sizing issue might have impacted the cost. by elizabethunseelie (Mon 29th Nov 2021 11:16am)

  • See, I made a mistake when I went to New Orleans. I got some sensational red beans and rice - with andouille sausage, bone-on-pork cooked till it melted in the mouth and flavour that would make you weep like one of those people in renaissance paintings hearing the voice of god. Then I came back here and found out I couldn’t recreate it cause we only have kidney beans, not red beans, and the French andouille sausage is very different from the Cajun. So for years I have been tormented but longing for something beyond my grasp but forever seared into my memory. So basically, yeah dude you should totally open up a restaurant I’d go. by elizabethunseelie (Sun 5th Dec 2021 8:40pm)

  • It’s normal, as long as they’re not being dicks another it you get used to it. There are three small dogs above my place and you can set your watch to their nightly zoomies, suddenly you have a rush of tiny tippy tapping making its way all over the flat - it’s sweet in a way. by elizabethunseelie (Thu 16th Dec 2021 12:14pm)

Carpet may be best for your neighbours and yourself unless you can get really high quality underfloor insulation - if you go for laminate without it prepare for both cold and a neighbour who will be pissed off even if you tiptoe around your flat. by elizabethunseelie (Fri 7th Jan 2022 8:56pm)

  • Depends on how big your house or flat is. In my flat, we eat in the kitchen cause we can fit a table in what used to be the bed area. But, if they’re going to be investing more in building up other travel infrastructure I can understand them wanting to keep this simple and relatively inexpensive. But if they could focus on doing something about the smell that would be great. by elizabethunseelie (Wed 23rd Feb 2022 9:47am)
  • Just in case someone hasn’t mentioned them - Mother India, The Panopticon for a wee look around some weird history and the Sharmanka Kinetic Theatre - whenever I have guests who are visiting Glasgow for the first time I take them there and they say they’ve never seen anything like it anywhere. Also, if you have 2 weeks, why not take her for a day on Arran if the weather is on your side? Close enough to get back to the city if you have evening plans, but if could give them some of the majestic landscape stuff visitors love so much. Plus they have very cute seals. by elizabethunseelie (Mon 28th Feb 2022 12:55pm)

  • The village I went to school in had a big brutalist structure at its centre. Tearing it down was fantastic. It was like a big grey cloud that had been hovering over the place for decades was finally lifted. There are some brutalist structures worth saving sure, but architecturally it’s so bloody depressing when it dominates the hub of a community. When it’s town centres, police stations, govt offices, it feels a bit like living in a dystopian novel. Its oppressive, and ugly. by elizabethunseelie (Mon 14th Mar 2022 5:16pm)

  • It looks like it could be really nice, it would be great to open up the space more. I hope it tied into some waterfront projects and a revival of the merchant city area - some of the bits near the Panopticon are in desperate need of tidying up. I am confused as to what an ‘urban wall’ means though. Is it a particular architectural term? Is it something like place for graffiti art or some other kind of focal point? by elizabethunseelie (Fri 22nd Apr 2022 11:53am)

  • Certainly it needs replacing, the arcade is depressing to look at. I just wish the flats had a bit more variety and were a bit less prison-like. Something that huge could cut a lot of sun out from the street, so we’re replacing one depressing block with another it would be a real shame. But, maybe it will be better than the render. Maybe the brickwork will be nice, maybe planting will soften the space etc. So long as they’re build to last and not a quick cash grab on the back of hundreds of folk wanting a flat near Queens Park it will be a good thing though. by elizabethunseelie (Wed 11th May 2022 6:27pm)
  • If it’s the Louden yeah I’d avoid that, just cause the match day crowds are a pain in the arse. You might not get grief if folk think you’re fans from Northern Ireland but I wouldn’t take the risk. Old firm games and international ones are the matches that get a bit mad, they do have police presence in the neighbourhood to keep things under control but it can be annoying. Overall though, Inborn isn’t too bad these days - near a lovely big park, couple of nice bars and cafes, a fair few pretty tenement flats. But if you’re that young you’d probably be better off nearer the city centre or west end if you can afford it - better for the unis and more stuff to do. by elizabethunseelie (Tue 17th May 2022 5:44am)

  • What’s sad is my tactic that worked five years ago - find a scabby flat and just live there till you can afford to do it up - no longer works. Too many flats needing a bit of TLC are snapped up by buy-to-let or flippers. So a 1 bed flat that was all nicotine yellow and going for 80,000 gets painted white and is suddenly on for offers over 150,000. It’s maddening. by elizabethunseelie (Thu 4th Aug 2022 11:05am)

  • Gold Seal did mine. They’re not the absolute cheapest company, but they know how to do weird sized tenement windows right and had everything down and tidied in a day and a half. by elizabethunseelie (Sun 18th Sep 2022 8:12am)
  • Second Arran. It’s known as Scotland in miniature so it’s a great wee place for a quick visit. Crofters is a great place for food and music if you do go there :) by elizabethunseelie (Sat 24th Sep 2022 4:48pm)
  • Souter should have the building taken off him, not even a compulsory purchase. He let it rot for years hoping Glasgow City Council would foot the bill for restoring it so he could rake in the profits. Give it back to the city and put it to use that would actually benefit the place. by elizabethunseelie (Tue 27th Sep 2022 9:12pm)
  • Try Celinos in Partick by elizabethunseelie (Thu 6th Oct 2022 2:47pm)
  • Shelter and British Heart Foundation have second hand furniture shops in the city, near the Trongate and Patrick respectively. You can find some pretty good stuff there in terms of beds, chests of drawers and stuff in them. by elizabethunseelie (Wed 12th Oct 2022 11:02pm)
  • I think they offer deliveries for the big stuff, I don’t know what the cost would be though - it’s been a while since I last used them. by elizabethunseelie (Thu 13th Oct 2022 12:13pm)
  • I think a lot of Muslim families like them. Sweets are nice and pubs aren’t part of the day to day culture, so if you wanna have a bit of fun of an evening why not ice cream? by elizabethunseelie (Sat 15th Oct 2022 6:05am)
  • Showed this to my dad and he says to throw in Allan’s in Paisley just because there’s currently no such Paisley based debate/recommendation thread, and some of you might find yourself out that way in desperate need of nice chips. by elizabethunseelie (Wed 19th Oct 2022 5:26pm)
  • Shame, it used to be a great Chinese restaurant, loved the noodles they did there when I was a kid. by elizabethunseelie (Wed 26th Oct 2022 4:54pm)
  • Adding on to what others have said already - Find your outside water turn off and buy a water key. Also get a basic tool kit and plunger if you don’t have them. Prepare for basic emergencies and you’ll have more peace of mind. by elizabethunseelie (Thu 27th Oct 2022 11:36am)
  • It’s an outdoor valve to turn off water from coming into the building - say you have a burst pipe or other plumbing emergency. Knowing where the outdoor mains valve is and having a way to turn it off can save you a lot of hassle and tears… believe me :/ by elizabethunseelie (Thu 27th Oct 2022 11:59am)
  • Depends if they in a tenement or not - most should, but some older places have weird as fuck plumbing :/ also handy if someone’s pipe bursts in the flat above you and they’re away. Water key is still handy to have just in case. by elizabethunseelie (Thu 27th Oct 2022 12:02pm)
  • You might be better checking with the SSPCA - they can do proper checks to make sure they’re going to a suitable home. I’m sure there are lovely folk who would like to take on the flock but birds are a hell of a lot of work, best they go somewhere where their needs are really appreciated. by elizabethunseelie (Tue 1st Nov 2022 3:36pm)
  • One slightly more serious suggestion - cut hedges and anything else that gives folk place to hide. Get your front door well lit and open to view and people are less likely to duck in to pee out of sight of the police. by elizabethunseelie (Wed 2nd Nov 2022 5:32pm)
  • Pretty sure there’s a small cult above me - lots of random rhythmic stamping and spells of laugher/crying like the screaming scene in Midsomer … that and they don’t seem to know how to put rubbish in a bin. They’ll leave bags in the middle of the bin shed even when the bins are empty. Fuck I hope they move soon. by elizabethunseelie (Fri 4th Nov 2022 10:01pm)
  • Think your looking for the Scottish Design Exchange in the Buchanan Galleries :) by elizabethunseelie (Thu 10th Nov 2022 9:33am)
  • By restoring do you mean getting rid or layers of paint or fixing broken plaster? For the former, you could give Peel-a-way a try. They use that in national trust home and the like to protect delicate cornice work. For the latter, you need professionals. A colleague of mine recommended [these guys](https://cornicerepairglasgow.co.uk) but I have no idea what they charge these days I’m afraid. by elizabethunseelie (Fri 11th Nov 2022 12:41pm)
  • I had it two weeks ago now everyone else does - I’m apparently a sneezy hipster :/ by elizabethunseelie (Fri 18th Nov 2022 1:40pm)
  • This is why I’m interested in seeing the final results of the University of Glasgow’s research into [retrofitting a tenement building in Niddre Street](https://youtu.be/nLiKTvL9YSI). by elizabethunseelie (Wed 7th Dec 2022 1:33pm)
  • Yup, it’s mostly passed now but the cough lingers, I am bloody sick of it now. by elizabethunseelie (Sun 18th Dec 2022 12:19am)
  • Yup, it’s pretty dire. Had to tell my mate Cafe Cossachok was long gone (used to go in for their epic puddings when he visited). The city centre in general is dire as is at the moment. When more pubs and restaurants go we’ll only be able to make money as a film set for dystopia cinema (again). by elizabethunseelie (Tue 10th Jan 2023 9:35am)
  • The only irritation I have is seeing so many newly proposed flats looks so damn boring. Brick boxes, tiny balconies with black railings for some, no decoration, no unique features - threes nothing reflecting the history or style of the area, or even architecture designed to work well given the needs of the environment. A little more ambition or flair in a lot of these projects would make the city much more interesting as it evolves. by elizabethunseelie (Sat 21st Jan 2023 10:46am)
  • Aye it looks no bad. Will miss the steps for protests though but I’m sure folk would find another space. I just wish the buildings had a few more interesting features. Even some different colours or playing around with some decorative brick patterns would make it a bit more interesting. But maybe some plants would do that job? by elizabethunseelie (Tue 24th Jan 2023 4:23pm)
  • There is Freecycle, but it’s pretty hit or miss. by elizabethunseelie (Thu 26th Jan 2023 12:29pm)
  • How d’you guys think this will work with tenements? There’s no space for any extra bins, so I assume a couple of blue bins would be removed and we’d get another colour to differentiate. by elizabethunseelie (Mon 30th Jan 2023 1:54pm)
  • God that would have been horrendous. by elizabethunseelie (Wed 8th Feb 2023 2:05pm)
  • Yup, and make it a fine that actually has impact across the board, not one that just hurts poorer people. Make it like Finland and their parking tickets being linked to a percentage of your income. by elizabethunseelie (Sun 19th Feb 2023 3:35pm)
  • They remind me of the character Shug from Rab C Nesbitt tbh. by elizabethunseelie (Thu 16th Mar 2023 11:50am)
  • That’s good, it would be a shame to lose the deco architecture, we’ve got lots of lovely Victorian stuff in the city centre but with the loss of the ABC there’s not many examples of Deco left. by elizabethunseelie (Thu 23rd Mar 2023 10:34am)
  • “ Provided they actually empty them it should.” Based on current bin collections I think this is where people think the whole thing will fall down. And the problem of blocking some older, smaller pavements depending on where the hub is. In principal it seems good, I’ve seen similar pick ups in Spain and Greece, but it’s got to be maintained properly. Not all on the council, clatty bastards could muck it up sadly. by elizabethunseelie (Wed 19th Apr 2023 12:45pm)
  • Sugarfall might have something like that, but I think they change some of their cakes through the seasons. by elizabethunseelie (Wed 10th May 2023 7:50pm)
  • British Heart Foundation has furniture shops in the west end and city centre, they usually have a decent range of stuff. by elizabethunseelie (Tue 23rd May 2023 3:37pm)
  • Would be nice if the buildings were a bit more interesting, but still better than a half empty old shopping centre. Wonder what they’ll do with the new cinema though. They put a fair amount of money in that :/ by elizabethunseelie (Fri 26th May 2023 6:27pm)
  • They can fuck right off if they’re planning to interrupt the neighbourhood plans. Making the place less shite is not a bloody conspiracy. by elizabethunseelie (Sat 27th May 2023 5:38pm)
  • Roast does epic cheese steaks. by elizabethunseelie (Tue 30th May 2023 10:32pm)
  • If AirBnB stuck to the whole ‘rent a room while your still in the place to stop shit going mental’, I wouldnae mind it. But hollowing out neighbourhoods and ruining the lives of people trying to actually live there? No, fuck right off with that. by elizabethunseelie (Sat 3rd Jun 2023 10:39pm)
  • Thanks goodness, but I hope there’s a decent plant to fill empty units. The street has been dire for years now. by elizabethunseelie (Tue 6th Jun 2023 11:45am)
  • Do you think the choices about how to improve the street will influence what’s kind of businesses might invest there? Pedestrianisation seems like it would be better for restaurants/cafes/bars as there would be more footfall and space for tables with nice trees for a bit of shelter. But I’m not sure what could be done with the empty department shops like the old BHS. As the shopping centres are remodelled maybe they might fit some of the businesses that were in there, but they are odd buildings for modern business to take on. by elizabethunseelie (Tue 6th Jun 2023 1:10pm)
  • At least is usually over pretty quick these days. There’s usually only about a dozen folk unless it’s one of their big ones. But why the council allows an entire marching season in this day and age baffles me. by elizabethunseelie (Sat 17th Jun 2023 9:46am)
  • Give them one a year, let them have their fun but keep the disruption to the rest of us to a minimum. by elizabethunseelie (Sat 17th Jun 2023 10:17am)
  • Can you name me a religion that disrupts the city with loud marches for months at a time? Cause I think they’d have a similar reaction from people who just want a lie in at the weekend. by elizabethunseelie (Sat 17th Jun 2023 10:28am)
  • Timpson’s was the only place I could find that did repairs on Docs, think they gave a deal with the company. by elizabethunseelie (Mon 19th Jun 2023 5:27pm)
  • Proper heavy rain, thunder, the smell of petrichor… bliss so it is. by elizabethunseelie (Tue 20th Jun 2023 8:13pm)
  • Can the evangelical screechy folk be moved along, I’d even take off key warmly Wonderwall over the god bothers ruining George Square for the rest of us. by elizabethunseelie (Fri 21st Jul 2023 3:03pm)
  • The bridge from Govan to Partick might improve things a bit, the the road and the grim walk from the distillery to the museum is doing it no favours. by elizabethunseelie (Wed 26th Jul 2023 8:50pm)
  • Best bet is to keep pushing the factor I’m afraid, it’s a common area so they should take care of it and bill all the flats for the pick-up. Shame you have to pay for one arsehole though. by elizabethunseelie (Wed 26th Jul 2023 9:42pm)
  • Sometimes I just remember that fucker is still looking for a council handout and get all raging again. At some point I think locals should just occupy the place until he gives it up and fucks off. by elizabethunseelie (Thu 3rd Aug 2023 6:20pm)
  • I’ve lived in flats in glasgow, mostly tenements, and never had a rodent issue. If you’re particularly concerned then maybe go for a newer building, avoid any places with plants creeping up the walls (pretty, but a rodent ladder sadly) and avoid somewhere with messy gardens. You should be fine OP, but those extra caveats might put your mind more at ease. by elizabethunseelie (Wed 9th Aug 2023 4:02pm)
  • I wonder if they’re actually going to cap the motorway in that area as well? by elizabethunseelie (Thu 17th Aug 2023 2:27pm)
  • To be fair, in this area the roads are also awful. The potholes will break the neck of someone on a bike one day. by elizabethunseelie (Thu 17th Aug 2023 6:31pm)
  • It’s good to get more homes, I just wish the building weren’t quite so bland. But people having a roof over their heads is most important. by elizabethunseelie (Fri 25th Aug 2023 9:27pm)
  • Density in the city centre makes a lot of sense - more council tax from more residents, fewer boarded up shops bringing the place down, and hopefully it encourages more businesses that serve the new folk living there. I just hope any places being retrofitted into flats are made to include decent soundproofing - developers putting tissue thin walls up in retrofitted flats should not be the norm. by elizabethunseelie (Fri 1st Sep 2023 9:22am)
  • As in to get supplies? John Lewis has a small section in their haberdashery section, and I think there’s a Hobbycraft in Silverburn. by elizabethunseelie (Fri 1st Sep 2023 2:10pm)
  • I really don’t know how they don’t have a Labyrinth cosplaying night or something. Where else could it work? by elizabethunseelie (Fri 22nd Sep 2023 4:14pm)
  • Yeah… I suspect most people will lack sympathy when they read he leaves his bike in the close. If he had it chained to the stairs the thief might be hailed as a hero of the people :/ by elizabethunseelie (Sun 24th Sep 2023 8:30am)
  • Ladybirds try and come in along with the spiders at this time of year. Any insect or arachnid that eats fruit flies is welcome to bunk down in my flat for the winter. by elizabethunseelie (Mon 9th Oct 2023 5:00pm)
  • It’s been fine when I’ve been on the continent, but they’re big bins and emptied every day - apparently twice a day in the height of summer in some places. So long as it was a similar schedule here I’d be all for it - my neighbours think the back court is there personal midden. But if they have delays between pickups, it’s gonna go south fast. by elizabethunseelie (Thu 26th Oct 2023 1:26pm)
  • Snow on a day I don’t have to trudge to work always brings on child-like glee :) by elizabethunseelie (Sat 2nd Dec 2023 9:48am)
