  • Met up with an internet friend for the first time for lunch today, have "known" him and his wife since 2010. Didn't get murdered. All good :) by lalajia (Fri 4th Jan 2019 8:36pm)
  • oh god I used that as a FB status. Am I turning into "that wifey"?" :( by lalajia (Fri 4th Jan 2019 8:35pm)
  • Def debating it, just need to check if I'm working the next day (yeah yeah, new job, still rubbing it in) ;) by lalajia (Fri 4th Jan 2019 8:41pm)
  • I went with Hamilton Town House, a registry office do. Did take our own two witnesses, but the council staff were stupidly excited at a "secret" wedding and said they could have got their colleagues to do it. No package deal, tiny ceremony, just paid for the paperwork and room for the hour or whatever it took (hubbie says about £250 quid). Own CD for the background music, they provided suggested vows, and were very very helpful. Nice big sandstoney building, so I wore my velvet cloak, as a sad old semi-ex-goth ;) by lalajia (Fri 4th Jan 2019 9:19pm)
  • Happy birthday! I'd have got you a vase if I'd known ;) by lalajia (Sat 12th Jan 2019 8:36pm)

  • First shift of the new job today! Got a keg of beer in the fridge for later on tonight once I've survived it, plus rushing home, getting the kids ready for dance, homework/bathtime/bedtime etc. Hats off to everyone else who's been a working mum for years x by lalajia (Wed 23rd Jan 2019 1:00pm)

  • well done you. had you already had the tattoo done when you were doing the first aid? I'm imagining you hobbling to his rescue :) by lalajia (Sun 3rd Feb 2019 2:52pm)
  • My mother's 77th birthday today! My big brother came over from Euroland for lunch, and I luckily had both my daughters there to sing happy birthday to Granny, plus a big bag of tat for her (all bought in the charity shop, as she doesn't NEED anything but likes opening stuff. plus the shop got the money for a good cause) so it all went well. by lalajia (Sun 3rd Feb 2019 2:55pm)

  • Just since you mentioned Rutherglen - there's a group Healthy n Happy based in Number 18 over there who organise various community events (cheap cinema days, walking groups, art classes, local radio station) and are always looking for volunteers. Could be a good way to meet people, could be a way to get something on your CV, or they might even have jobs going. • Wee sod got the train back to my town too. So proud :( by lalajia (Sun 10th Mar 2019 8:51am)
  • Just built a mini-greenhouse from Aldi the other day. I was out tonight in the p!ssing rain weighing it down with as many plantpots as I could find before it headed off to see the wizard. by lalajia (Tue 12th Mar 2019 6:54pm)
  • I'm near Cambuslang train station, its got good links into town, as there's two train lines (kirkhill on the mount florida line, and Cambuslang on the main west coast line to Central), plus buses and a new cycle path network slowly linking up. Parts of the town are rough, but anything in a new build estate will just be full of working parents and screaming kids and quiet apart from that! PM me any particular houses/flats you're looking at, and I can tell you if that's a good/bad street. TLDR version - anything that was a post-war slum clearance housing scheme is still a no go area, otherwise you're fine. by lalajia (Fri 29th Mar 2019 8:54am)
  • I'm the opposite kind of idiot, that's up at 5am with the toddler and tends to do the housework/empty the bins then. I try and wait now till at least 7am before sticking anything in the glass bin though, since it's practically under my neighbours bedroom window. Sorry if my neighbour's reading this - I did it at 6am a few times before I realised that not everyone had to be awake at miserable o'clock like me! by lalajia (Sat 30th Mar 2019 5:57am)

  • Weird shift in the charity shop today. Touchy-feely old lady came in, hands outstretched, walked past the male volunteers to "ask the lassie" about cash for clothes. I explained we only take donations, we don't pay out, and got an indignant "Aye, I know that!", before she continued her spiel about that "y'know that cash for clothes, anyway, it's just that I've goat this stuff from my niece, it's too good to throw out, you know?". I kept dodging her attempts to stroke my arms, smiling fixedly and repeating we don't do that kind of thing, got snapped at that I "wisnae much use then" and thankfully another customer intervened and directed her to the dodgy industrial units down the road that used to have a wee guy that would rake through your bags and refuse half the stuff if it didn't still have the tags on. Second time within a month I've been trapped behind the counter with a customer trying to reach over to touch me. Yeah, I'm stand-offish aand maybe just tetchy today, but when I'm trapped behind the desk, I don't want my hands patted, shoulder grasped, or arm stroked by a relative stranger, thanks? by lalajia (Mon 1st Apr 2019 4:01pm)
  • Haha, thanks, I thought after posting that I'd come back to lots of tellings off for being rude to the lonely little old lady ;) Usually I have more patience with the customers, and I can deflect and charm them, but not today. Think I need a break from the place! by lalajia (Mon 1st Apr 2019 6:33pm)
  • I had a couple of chancers last year switching price tags, then getting all indignant at me, and screeching how dare I imply they were up to something. Like you say, they were just wanting the argument, so they more they swore at me, threatened to jump me, and called me a effing spastic, the bigger I grinned at them, wished them a good day and told them "god bless you" (I'm not religious, but it utterly threw their attempt at a fight, and they stormed out the shop screaming incoherently. It was GREAT). But yeah, the types of folk you get coming in to a charity shop Mon-Fri between 9-5 are often the folk who, umm, can't hold down a job Monday-Friday 9-5. Plus the mums, the OAPs, the childminders, and the slightly confused folk with a day off work clearing out their houses who're pleasantly surprised that yes, we'll take all their crap. Aye, the other one who kept touching me last month, made the mistake of sneaking up behind me and grabbing me when I was in with the kids as a customer of the shop, so I let rip in front of the wee grannies telling him to keep his hands off me and that he did NOT have consent to keep touching me. Apparently he's not been back either. And yeah, some of the regulars are so lovely, and you feel so bad that you're probably the only human contact they've had all week, but there's always that sense that they'd turn on you so quick over 50p worth of tat. Thanks for the good wishes - I've volunteered regularly in there since 2011, but now I've got paid work three days a week, I think I need to give it a break before my "I'm not getting paid to take THIS crap" attitude shows through too much ;) And hijack away! Always good to swap stories from the battlefront. by lalajia (Mon 1st Apr 2019 6:42pm)
  • Yeah, the ones that follow me around the shop wanting to chat when I'm clearly hauling boxes of books from one place to another tend to get my back up too. I've been physically blocked in the understairs cupboard a few times by people standing in the doorway talking at me, and I have to actually ask them to move so I can escape (they don't take the hint and back away to let me out). Freaks me out. by lalajia (Mon 1st Apr 2019 7:06pm)
  • Yep. I remember as a student getting one of these free haircuts from a trainee hairdresser in a posh salons on Buchanan Street. It looked fabulous, glossy and sleek - so much so that a homeless guy came up to admire it and stroke my head almost as soon as I was out :O (in retrospect, I should've been worried about my pockets being picked, but I was probably penniless anyway, so got away relatively unmolested!) by lalajia (Tue 2nd Apr 2019 8:23am)
  • Yeah, all sounds very familiar (except we've not had a riding crop yet!) What about mad donators? We had a woman stomp down furious to us, because she'd donated a wardrobe without bothering to empty it first, so she wanted her husbands clothes back. Did she think we emptied it as part of the collection service, or magically just "knew" that the clothes weren't being donated too? Or someone who handed in a bunch of suitcases, not realising one was still full of her holiday clothes - she had to dig through the rag bags to get her stuff back, since we had chucked all the used swimsuits and short-shorts. I think she threatened to go to the papers over that one :) And volunteers nicking stuff - I don't mean donations, I mean the manageresses phone and gym bag :( by lalajia (Tue 2nd Apr 2019 8:28am)

  • Fitbit seem to have deleted the Glasgow group :( [https://www.fitbit.com/group/22BTRQ](https://www.fitbit.com/group/22BTRQ) It used to have about 400 members, some guy with a lawnmowing business usually topped the leadship board with about twice the steps of everyone else, but it was a good way to match my stepcount against random strangers (stealthbrag, since my fitbit friends all drive, they're not much competition). by lalajia (Sun 16th Jun 2019 1:26pm)

  • I love her hair, her leggings, and her commitment to the wildlife. I wouldnt personally have chosen that coat to go with that outfit, but hey, maybe it's her deliberate style, maybe she's a bit skint and it's the only one she has. Hope she's happy and wish her well PS wash your hands before eating after touching them though, think they've got all kind of nasty germs. by lalajia (Wed 17th Jul 2019 7:24pm)

  • Just found out one of my friends has died. He was the one local dad brave enough to face taking his daughter to the mum-filled baby groups, we used to take our girls on playdates, to softplay and the local fairs, it's so unreal that he's gone. I'd been meaning to message him since Friday, he just died on Saturday. by lalajia (Sun 28th Jul 2019 7:25pm)
  • The family hasn't said, but I'm assuming it's from the illness he'd been fighting recently. by lalajia (Mon 29th Jul 2019 7:53am)
  • I'm in SLC, but same issue. The bin at the local kids playpark was overflowing from being not properly emptied, so I went over with a trowel, heavy duty gardening gloves and two bin liners. Dug all the crap out (literally, thanks to the rotting dog poo bags), filled one bin nab, left it tied up for the binmen to take away, and lined the fresh empty bin. Bets on they don't lift the full bag tho since it's not a SLC binbag, and they wont replace the liner, so it'll be back to the same unemptiable rotting overflowing state in a few days, right next to the toddlers swings :( by lalajia (Tue 30th Jul 2019 6:48pm)

  • Went to tend to my wee boy's grave today, knelt down to trim the grass round the headstone and leant straight into dogshit some crappy owner had left there. Realised there was an older clump too, bet its the same shitty dogwalker. First time in 11 years I've had that happen :( by lalajia (Sun 4th Aug 2019 8:21pm)

  • Oh, I don't, I like seeing dogwalkers wandering around the cemetery,to get all cliched, it's a tranquil greenspace in a built up urban area, so it's good to see people using it. Just want them to keep an eye on their little shitbags and clean up after them a bit more! I will, thank you x by lalajia (Mon 5th Aug 2019 8:21am)

  • I used to always get freaked out at Buchanan St underground when I was on that island platform that was open to the tracks at both sides, back in the 90s. Last time I was there\* I think it had a perpex barrier at least, at the side the other trains came in on, so you couldn't fall that way if you fainted , got shoved by a random stranger or anything. \* yeah yeah, I've not been on the underground in nearly a decade, that's what having young kids in pushchairs does for you :) by lalajia (Sun 18th Aug 2019 7:49pm)
  • ? You're.... not meant to take them on escalators? And only two stations have lifts to be fully accessible? I'd happily have bumped up and down stairs, but the stations I'd have been using were escalators only. I walked a lot instead :P by lalajia (Sun 18th Aug 2019 7:59pm)

  • I live in Cambuslang and there's a disturbing amount of support for Orange Walks, Brexit and the like, amongst the more long term residents. If you dodge the older housing schemes though and go for a new build area, that's probably safer. Having said that though, there's a new Polish deli opened on the main street that seems to be thriving, so hopefully the community is being more tolerant nowadays. • Cambuslang. It's got three train stations, on two separate lines (Cambuslang on the west coast mainline/argyle low level line, and Kirkhill on the south side line, with Newton at the junction of both lines) and you can easily get a three bedroom newbuild within that budget. This one is a 20 min walk from newton station [https://www.rightmove.co.uk/property-for-sale/property-65535822.html](https://www.rightmove.co.uk/property-for-sale/property-65535822.html) or this about a ten min walk from kirkhill and cambuslang stations - [https://www.rightmove.co.uk/property-for-sale/property-66313960.html](https://www.rightmove.co.uk/property-for-sale/property-66313960.html) There are several large parks and woodands: Cambuslang Public Park, Holmhills Community Woodland, Quarryfield Park, Halfway Park, lots of local schools and nurseries, and lots of young families, so there's various toddler groups and events. Disclaimer - I live here so I'm biased, also totally addicted to virtual house shopping ;) by lalajia (Fri 25th Oct 2019 7:19pm)

A lot of us were born when it was part of Glasgow, and still think of ourselves as Glaswegian despite the boundary change in the 90s. And we still have the G72/G73 postcodes! • I live across from a local park, and try when it's dry to go over with a binbag& gloves and pick up as much as I can. And then the schoolkids walk through at their next lunchbreak and chuck more noodle pots everywhere. and at weekend the local neds think its funny to smash a bottle or two in the playpark bit so I end up going over with a brush and dustpan to try and clear the worst of it up, so that when my pre-schooler falls off her balance bike she lands on the playground foam, not a smashed Buckie bottle. I must look a right weirdo and I'm totally turning into my mum, but I can't stand looking out my window at empty MD2020 bottles and bloody red Koka pots everywere. by lalajia (Sun 19th Jan 2020 8:50pm)
  • Been off work sick for weeks, and due to go back in tomorrow. It's like the weirdest Sunday-night feeling ever, combined with a side dose of worries like "have my passwords expired/can I remember them/what else has broken since I was last there"? Still a bit wretched, but I hadn't been there long enough to qualify for sickpay so... one empty paypacket haas been bad enough! by lalajia (Wed 22nd Jan 2020 6:32pm)
  • Survived Thursday and Friday back at work, just tomorrow to go then I can relax for a bit. There's a possibility of another similar job but with slightly more parent-friendly hours coming up in the next few months, so I'll keep an eye out for that. • You (and I) must just have bought at the right time - we were cheeky and offered under the offers over price and got the house anyway. It maybe was a bit shit, but we've spent the extra getting the roof checked, place rewired, etc since! by lalajia (Mon 3rd Feb 2020 6:40pm)

  • Half term starts tomorrow. I'd hoped my oldest would be spending it with her bio-dad in the Lakes, but unless there are some frantic last minute phone calls to sort it out, it looks like it's fallen through again. Sucks for her, sucks for me having to sort childcare while I'm working, and presumably, sucks for her family down south who've not seen her in a while. • Part time library assistant. I'm lucky with my choice of shifts and location - I'm at a wee local branch where we tend to get mainly well-read retirees, and families with book-loving kids coming in, not the more challenging clients that the city centre branches can get (judging by posts I've seen on library-twitter). I'm almost always on with the team leader who's been there for years, so if there are any awkward questions, or trouble-makers, she's got my back. I used to be in academic administration which was way higher paid, but I burnt out from the stress, so this is probably less than half the pay but much much less stressful. And I get to play with books, and talk about authors, for money :) Bad bits - the folk I can't help. The poor guys on Universal Credit running over to use the PCs after getting texts threatening them with sanctions if they don't log in within so many hours, but they can't afford to even top up their phone, never mind get broadband. Having to tell mums with toddlers that we don't have a public toilet. Mopping up afterwards ;) by lalajia (Wed 4th Mar 2020 6:57pm)

  • The only reason for the two month delay was medical stuff - turned out the wee sod had been hit by a car before she was brought in, and we had to wait for her pelvis to heal before we could bring her home. I think in person to show you're not a creepy weirdo planning on using them as bait for dog-fighting, is sadly the way to go about this. by lalajia (Thu 12th Mar 2020 9:45am)
  • Thanks - I've just signed up to it, purely for this ;) by lalajia (Sat 14th Mar 2020 8:13am)

  • Fifth wedding anniversary last night, and rather than go out for dinner, it was JustEat burgers at home once the kids were in bed. Romance in the shadow of the virus ;) I've given up waiting for the Government to make the call, and I'm keeping the kids home from school/nursery from today. Pray for me! x by lalajia (Wed 18th Mar 2020 7:24am)

  • Clydeside walkway the same. I was out with the kids yesterday, we ended up on the wee strip of dogshit filled grass off the side of the path thanks to runners and cyclists holding the middle rather than picking a side. And then a police helicopter hovered over us for most of the way home, so that was nice. by lalajia (Sun 29th Mar 2020 8:43am)
  • I braved farmfoods, took some essentials round to my 78yr old parents, and my mum tried to send me back out to Morrisons since "Easter eggs are buy one get one free there!". I get they're very sheltered because of the self-isolating thing, but they're just not understanding this "only go out for essentials, there's rumours of the polis checking your shopping bags to confiscate booze & chocolate" thing! anyway, I tried not to lecture her like she was a brainless twat, but your comment still reminded me of that anyway ;) by lalajia (Thu 9th Apr 2020 8:35pm)
  • Yep, there's one 1m wide gate to my local park (I can see it from my window). The same old guy with a wee white dog stood IN the gateway three separate times yesterday. Partly angry at him for his ignorance, partly amused watching the chaos when someone simulataneously approaches him from the parkside needing out, and the pavement needing in. by lalajia (Fri 10th Apr 2020 4:23pm)

I know I'm lucky to still have a job, and be able to work from home, yadda yadda yadda, but I kind of just want to batten down the hatches right now and concentrate on the family. by lalajia (Mon 20th Apr 2020 8:59pm)

  • Rant warning: read this article yesterday, and I still need to vent. [https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-52431501](https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-52431501) " He described the more than 20,000 deaths in the UK as "heartbreaking", but said the toll could have been "much worse" without the strict measures. " And then they go on to talk about easing the lockdown and lifting restrictions. "could have been much worse"? Do they not get that it IS much worse? That figure doesn't include deaths in the community/hospice/care homes, so estimates say it's more like 40,000? And he's talking like this is over? Like ohhh, BoJo's recovered and back tomorrow (today now), so it's all over, everythings better, let's take the final score. There are still hundreds dying everyday, you callous little man, and as soon as you start lifting things just because your tory-big-business mates want the plebs to go back to earning minimum wage to make you big-bucks in their sweatshops, it'll be a thousand dying per day AGAIN. How'll that help your economy. They're like a bunch of kids just wanting lockdown lifted because they're bored and its something to do. FFS. by lalajia (Mon 27th Apr 2020 7:18am)
  • Can't question what doesn't exist! by lalajia (Mon 27th Apr 2020 10:28am)
  • Dunno mate, Nicola Sturgeon seems to be doing a pretty good job to me, and looks like she understands lives are more important than money. "However, she said even a slight lifting of restrictions could put this at risk. She added: "Any easing right now would see the virus surge upwards again, so please stick with it."" https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-scotland-52442353 by lalajia (Mon 27th Apr 2020 4:24pm)
  • Similar to other comments, avoid Century21. One of their local franchises attempted to charge fees that aren't permitted in Scotland, tried to cover up building survey results (but accidentally left them in an email forward to the tennant anyway, geniuses that they are), dragged their heels over basic maintenance and tried to get the tennant to do it, that kind of thing. I know they are a franchise, so other branches MIGHT vary, but eh, probably not worth the risk. by lalajia (Wed 29th Apr 2020 11:14am)
  • Morning all, had an altruistic day yesterday tidying up my bit of town by returning shopping trollies, and clearing up as much of the stuff that's been dumped at the (closed) local chartity shop as I could. Filled my green bin, my mum's bin, and got my sister on the case too. Next stop to go round the neighbours, and then see if the council will still collect flytipping for whats left. (then cry when some manky barstewards dump even more junk and we have to do it all again) by lalajia (Mon 11th May 2020 9:10am)
  • Cheers, I've just done that. The stuff I couldn't fit in my bin was mostly wood & broken furniture and because of the layout of the shop, its all under the upstairs flats so it's a real fire hazard to them. South lanarkshire council tho, rather than Glasgow, so who knows :) by lalajia (Mon 11th May 2020 9:33am)
  • I've been doing a lot of gardening and painting (and dragging the kids three hour walks), if any of them work for you? (DIY painting, not Bob Ross happy-little-trees painting) by lalajia (Thu 21st May 2020 11:13am)
  • We just got an email saying our place is doing the same, gov paying 80% and them topping up the remaining 20%. Waiting to hear if this applies to me, and feeling sorry for the poor souls that like you say are stuck doing what remains to be done. by lalajia (Thu 21st May 2020 11:17am)
  • As predicted, the cretins have dumped four bags full of junk at the charity shop round the corner from me again. Then other cretins have gone through them, and dumped the stuff they don't want to nick all, over the place. Once this wind drops I'll bag up the soggy manky crap again and see if me and the family have enough space in the green bins this week! by lalajia (Sat 23rd May 2020 11:10am)
  • Cambuslang, but probably everywhere TBF. The charity shops have signs up saying they're closed, please dont leave stuff on the doorstep, but selfish folk who've had a clear out during lockdown then realised the dumps are closed, leave their broken furniture outside like this [https://imgur.com/O3zkYkp](https://imgur.com/O3zkYkp) by lalajia (Sat 23rd May 2020 11:29am)
  • True. But I'm really really bored.... by lalajia (Sat 23rd May 2020 11:39am)
  • Loving the tour, thanks! I remember there still being buildings on the Partickhill platforms in the 1990s, getting the train from there out towards Anniesland they were obvious, just across the road bridge. Never thought to take photos back then :( by lalajia (Mon 25th May 2020 8:56pm)

  • Was meant to be off to Berwick today, ten day family holiday with hubbie and the kids. Ah well, all the companies were good with the refunds, so I'll just think of the cash I've saved and hopefully we'll get away at the October break or something instead. by lalajia (Fri 26th Jun 2020 10:45am)
  • I seem to be spending more, and I'm not even sure how! More take-aways, because we're bored of being stuck in cooking? More ice poles and lollies to keep the kids cool and entertained in the garden (well, during those hot dry weeks way). More impulse buys of stuff from middle-of-lidl/Aldi, again, especially if it keeps the kids happy for a bit. by lalajia (Sun 5th Jul 2020 6:21am)
  • Giving the kids a 1980s childhood. Rather than being rushed from breakfast club to school, to after school clubs and classes, then homework and bed, we are spending hours falling out of trees, rolling down hills, messing around in fields and going for walks along dis-used railways. If we see a beaten path, we follow it - we've discovered fishermen's sandy beaches on the banks of the Clyde, an entire abandoned farm down a disused road, seen deer, foxes, rabbits, swans, watched the cygnet hatch and grow, been surrounded by bees and butterflies gallore (before the council started cutting the grass back again and killing the wildflowers, boo). I hope they remember it as a long hot summer of constant walks, bike rides and exploring, then back home for ice creams on the deck. by lalajia (Sun 5th Jul 2020 6:30am)

  • Yeah, we bought a repossession that had been sitting empty all winter. When we walked in the place smelt cold and damp, that put all the other viewers off, and we got it for an offer under the listed offers-over price. Very lucky. (house didn't have damp, just needed the windows open to air the place properly, a bit of TLC, and it's been a bargain!) by lalajia (Sat 11th Jul 2020 7:16am)
  • I can't do it today (7pm here now) but I'm due a visit to Rutherglen cemetery at the weekend, so I'll buy an extra bunch and find a less-maintained gravesite to carry this out at, for you. I'm sorry for your loss x by lalajia (Thu 16th Jul 2020 7:08pm)
  • Let me guess... you're in Cambuslang? :) by lalajia (Tue 28th Jul 2020 6:26pm)
  • Haha, I'm not a creepy stalker I swear, just saw you post about this in the local fb group :) by lalajia (Tue 28th Jul 2020 10:53pm)
  • Three! "All About Cambuslang" the original, "Fàilte gu Camas Lang" a newcomer but has really helped bring people together in lockdown, and "Whats happening in Cambuslang" which is mostly business posts. I think every estate and scheme has its own mini one too, eg Drumsagard, Newton Farm, the new houses down at the Hoover site, but they dont let outsiders join ;) by lalajia (Wed 29th Jul 2020 10:26am)

  • Hunter's Quay, Dunoon. Holiday park with caravans, but also wooden chalets with hot tubs, looking out past a castle over the water. It'll rain though. every day. by lalajia (Fri 7th Aug 2020 9:18am)
  • Yeah. SLC aren't always the best, but they prioritised keeping the bin lorries going, while pausing the grass cutting, closing the dumps, canceling bulk uplifts, etc. There's still folk complaining, but at least the bins are empty! by lalajia (Sun 9th Aug 2020 8:11am)
  • No, I don't. It's your house. Unless you're a council tenant and they're your landlord? by lalajia (Wed 12th Aug 2020 11:54am)
  • Oh, my cat doesn't do that. Kill them, that is - she brings them in alive and lets them go to try and teach us to hunt. To be fair to her, I'm getting quite good at catching them now ;) (we also have mousetraps) by lalajia (Wed 12th Aug 2020 11:56am)
  • This. All of this. Also to add - John Menzies, not just a newsagent, also where you bought the best toys, and spectrum games on cassette tapes. Stretches of the city centre just being plywood walls covering gap sites, coated in posters for bands and upcoming shows. The fairs/shows coming to derelict bits of ground near you at unspecified times and staying for what felt like weeks. That week in the 1980s when it snowed so hard the city came to a stop for a week. Sledging every night with half the town, and deep enough that my dad built an igloo in the back garden. Being a wannabe goff in the late 80s/early 90s but make-up in the big shops only came in "natural" colours, so you'd scour the jumble sales and bargain bins for anything that wasn't red/pink lipstick or nail varnish. Then discovering Eurasia Crafts on Great western road for cheesecloth tops and fringed skirts, oh, heaven smelt of patchouli then! Wedding scrambles. Pigeon doocots. The yellow panels on the low level walls in Glasgow Central and the wee John Menzies at the top of the stairs to those platforms! Zonecards for travel everywhere, no need for busfare. Strathclyde as a brand - SPT orange bus stops and train stations, SRC jotters at school. Dunkin Donuts at four corners. the Cathouse in the old copper domed Merchants Seaman's house on Brown Street. Alien War in the Arches. Giant open air carpark where the St Enoch centre is now. Virginia Galleries for giant band posters, antiques, Mr Bens, tattoos , used books and anything non-mainstream. Argyle Street Market above River Island for more of the same. by lalajia (Thu 13th Aug 2020 8:09pm)

  • My neighbours have both red and blonde sandstone on the front of their house. Must've been built in 1890 exactly... by lalajia (Fri 14th Aug 2020 7:00pm)
  • Nope, three houses in a row, same style, some with the original stained glass in place surrounded by the red trimmed windows, very much deliberately done. Quite stunning once pointed out, butI grew up walking past them to school every day and never noticed they're quite possibly the only ones like that in town. by lalajia (Fri 14th Aug 2020 9:12pm)

  • Survived first day back at work (physically, as opposed to WFH) since March. Psychologically worn out, but hopefully wont stress so much before next shift now that I know the new normal for the workplace. Cheers to the people of Scotland for being sensible, and walking in with the mask already on, and heading for the hand sanitiser without being told! by lalajia (Sat 15th Aug 2020 7:16pm)
  • I had a look cheers, and even the red sandstone on the ground floor looks poorer and like its suffering too? Could just be the streetview angle though. Wonder how that layout happened - did they start building with red sandstone, realise it was over budget, then swap? by lalajia (Sat 15th Aug 2020 8:44pm)

I saw her for an hours session on Sunday (with mask and sanitiser, but still a fair amount of contact as she battered the knots out my shoulders!), she's symptom free, I've not been officially contacted by anyone from track&trace but... • Morning all. got to try and put in seven hours worth of working from home plus homeschool two kids today. And I think the school are stepping it up this week with live classes, so participation is a bit more pressured than "just get around to it when you can". Joy! by lalajia (Mon 25th Jan 2021 7:50am)
  • Cheers, it really is. Last lockdown, at least the youngest was pre-school, so we could pretty much play boardgames with her and go on adventures, and call that her nursery "work". This time round we have primary one homework assignments as well as the big kid's preparing for high school stuff. And my work. And housework. And elderly parents with health problems (not covid, thankfully). Still, one day down, eh? by lalajia (Mon 25th Jan 2021 7:01pm)

  • Was coming to say this - I'm obsessed with window shopping for what you can buy for under £50 grand in the Cambuslang/Rutherglen area, and there's often one or two bedroom flats going. Especially the two bedroom ex-council maisonettes built in the 1960s, they're usually about £45k, own front door, no shared close issues, sometimes a wee veranda as well by lalajia (Tue 16th Feb 2021 7:40pm)
  • We've booked Craig Tara for us & the kids for June. Good refund policy, suspect we'll end up having to use it :( Ironically, we hadn't booked Craig Tara for last summer because we were sick of it and wanted to see somewhere different for a change. Now anywhere outside the G72/G72 area looks rare and exotic and we can't wait to see the heady sights of Ayr town centre again! by lalajia (Tue 16th Feb 2021 7:46pm)

  • I think so... Was it a basement level bar on a corner, with a wee flight of stairs down to it and iron railings at street level? by lalajia (Thu 18th Feb 2021 6:19pm)
  • I wasn't a regular but def had a few good nights in there, and a sorta-kinda date which went well, but went nowhere lol. I have idly looked for it over the years but couldn't remember which corner it had been on, as there's no sign of a basement bar there anymore! by lalajia (Thu 18th Feb 2021 8:53pm)
  • Literally caught my five year old licking the park fence yesterday. This pandemic has been a good proportion of her remembered-life so far, you'd think the lectures about germs and not touching things we dont have to would have sunk in by now. Apparently not :P by lalajia (Fri 19th Feb 2021 7:27pm)

  • thank you, everyone I know who's had it recently has had bad shivers/chills for 24 hours or so, so I hope to follow your example instead :) Just excited to be getting out of my town to be honest, and going all the way to exotic East Kilbride, lol! by lalajia (Fri 12th Mar 2021 9:55am)
  • I once got locked in a train that terminated at Anderston. I was sitting reading quietly, thought I was on the train that went right through to Partick, till they switched the lights off and I went through the tunnel to Finnieston/SECC in the pitch black. Found the conductor up at the drivers cab when the train stopped, got the same "where were you, we checked the train" (aye right, I'm not that small), and they took me back through the tunnel again and let me back out at Anderston. I wasn't even that late for Uni. by lalajia (Wed 24th Mar 2021 8:29am)
  • Yeah, my town started this a few weeks ago - the local council gave out free litter pickers and SLC refuse bags, so people are going out individually during the day and filling a few bags from their street or local park, and sharing results on Facebook. It's getting noticed by passersby, so hopefully it'll discourage (some) people from dropping fresh stuff! by lalajia (Wed 24th Mar 2021 8:42pm)
  • I'll chip in for that if you have a gofundme! by lalajia (Wed 24th Mar 2021 8:40pm)
  • DELETED I'm going to be THAT person, but seriously, we are still in a global pandemic, and as far as I'm aware, the Scottish restrictions on meeting outside are still just four folk from two households. So although it is lovely to see my town showing community spirit, I'm not so sure that the groups of 20 meeting up to litter-pick, and the crowds coming out to see the Easter parade convoy handing out sweets to the local kids was really in the interests of lockdown. I mean, everyone's heart was in the right place, and its outdoors so risk of transmission is limited, but just GAAAAAAHHHHH FWIW I do solo litter picks, or with one member of my extended household, and kids under 11. Who got their own easter eggs bought for them and didn't need a free one handed off the back of a builders van :P by lalajia (Sun 4th Apr 2021 2:11pm)
  • No, further east than that, but it's Easter Sunday so there'll be lots of unofficial bunnies running around, spreading germs :P by lalajia (Sun 4th Apr 2021 3:43pm)

  • That brings back memories - I used to work in the Boyd Orr building and there was a shower room next to the loos on one of the floors that was mostly just offices, so the students wouldn't have noticed it. Not very helpful for the OP as I can't remember what floor, and it's probably years gone :( by lalajia (Fri 9th Apr 2021 9:13am)

  • Have you taken the train out to Chatelherault in South Lanarkshire, to explore Chatelherault Country park? It's literally just across the road from the station, and there are some walks that take you into Hamilton from there so you could get the bus or train back from there. I've walked to Strathclyde Country park from there as well, back in the pre-covid days (guess that's allowed again now!) by lalajia (Tue 20th Apr 2021 8:01am)

  • I'm just down the road from a couple of "scatter flats" as the locals call them, which seem to be the temporary accomodation South lanarkshire council flats for those who unexpectedly find themselves homeless. Two bedroom maisonettes with a balcony, and they are absolutely gutted and refurbished between the tenants, always workmen in painting and new carpets going down etc. So if you're in my bit of SLC, you'll be fine x by lalajia (Wed 16th Jun 2021 2:33pm)

  • This year I have: strawberries, raspberries, redcurrants, blackcurrants, courgettes (first time!), peas (first time!), tomatoes (spent more on seeds/compost/time/greenhouse than I'll have made back in fruit lol) and a flowering pumpkin vine that's not fruited yet. I guess sunflowers also, if you want to eat the seeds. ;) ETA last autumn I had great success with radishes, but I planted them too early this year and they just bolted instead :( by lalajia (Tue 3rd Aug 2021 10:26am)

  • Was also coming to say this! by lalajia (Sun 13th Mar 2022 5:36pm)
  • There's just nothing there. Square miles of newbuild houses with nothing apart from one pub with a wee portacabin shop stuck outside (actually, full credit to the pub owners for setting it up so the locals can at least buy bread & milk), the train station, and a flat roofed hairdressers cabin. And if you're in Clover Crescent, even that is over a mile away from you. As others have said there is a slightly bigger convenience store "Lallis" in Westburn, or the Tesco up in Drumsagard, but that's either a good half hour hike, or a 2 mile drive away, depending where abouts in NF you are. And they keep getting permission to build more houses, so you'll probably be within earshot of a building site for the next five years. If you dont mind driving to go literally everywhere, then it could be fine for you. But it just strikes me as remote and soul-less, since you asked! PS Oh also dont forget the stink of the sewage works just across the Clyde, again, mostly affecting the Clover Crescent area! by lalajia (Fri 8th Apr 2022 5:30pm)
  • apologies if you have your heart set on a house in Clover Crescent ;) I mean, if you have kids and a car, its quiet and has primary schools, so it's not all bad. But as they get older, there's no high school, and nothing to do, so.... by lalajia (Sat 9th Apr 2022 7:57am)

Start digging around the edges of the paintwork and find out ;) If there are visible hinges down one edge, you're probably in luck! by lalajia (Tue 26th Apr 2022 6:00pm)

  • Which street in Halfway? Some streets are worse than others, and some streets have been knocked down, and rebuilt to be gentrified. Some bits are working families and alright, other bits have individuals with addiction issues housed there, and the Eva Burrows treatment centre, which can lead to interesting encounters. Regular buses into town, or trains if you walk down to Newton station (there's a path to it off Mill Road). The Velvet Inn (done-up posh bit of the Sun Inn) seems alright, you've got Tesco up the road at the top of Drumsagard estate for shopping, three chippies, some good take-aways, post office, library, green space nearby for wandering (down the Clyde walkways or up Dechmont Hill), Gilbertfield Castle if you're into local history. by lalajia (Tue 10th May 2022 8:07pm)
  • Yeah, that bit underwent regeneration a few years ago and seems quiet. flats on one side of the main road, family houses on the other. There's a weird dip in the road at the Gulf petrol station which can flood in bad weather, but that's about it lol. • The Argyle line low level trains from Argyle Street station to Bridgeton station basically follow London road from Trongate to Bridgeton, and were built cut 'n cover style, so that looks like vaulting to hold up the tunnel roof, and support the road that was put back down on top. With added ventilation bonus, as said below, since it was originally used in the days of steam trains. When you're getting the low level train there are several flashes of daylight between what used to be Glasgow Cross station (you can see the pillars and overhead windows if you look closely) and Glasgow Green station (a white walled open space below West on the Green), so thank you, I'd wondered where this light came from! by lalajia (Thu 9th Feb 2023 8:59pm)
  • An address would have helped, video looks like its taken from the flats across from the Braemar Bar, around 147 London Road. by lalajia (Thu 9th Feb 2023 9:00pm)
  • Yes, you can still see the remains of Glasgow Cross and Glasgow Green stations when you're travelling from Argyle Street station to Bridgeton low level station, if you look out the windows. It's all the same stretch of line. by lalajia (Thu 9th Feb 2023 9:17pm)
  • Just to confuse things though, there were actually three Bridgeton Stations in ye olde days. [https://maps.nls.uk/view/103656952](https://maps.nls.uk/view/103656952) On this map you can see Bridgeton Cross station (in blue) which is now the modern Bridgeton Station. There's also Bridgeton Cross (red), a high level station, sadly it's line is now mostly built over and the station building is now retail premises as you say. And just to confuse things, near what's now Dalmarnock Station down the road, was Bridegton Station itself, at the junction of Mordaunt Street and London road. The remains of this high level line were demolished in 2009 to make way for redevelopment. by lalajia (Thu 9th Feb 2023 9:22pm)
  • The school run drivers near me are so bad, I now walk with the camera up and ready on my phone, as I can guarantee at least once a week, a car will mount the pavement and drive towards the bit I'm walking on, assuming I'll jump out of the way to let them park. (Dunno what I'd actually do with the footage though, so far, they've seen the camera filming, and decided to pull back onto the road and go park elsewhere.) by lalajia (Thu 9th Feb 2023 9:43pm)

  • r\_a\_user has a good dropped pin with the location of the video below, and OP has confirmed its taken across the road from the Braemar Bar (well west of Glasgow Green station) I'm curious what site with arches you thought it was though, were you talking about the basement gap site at the corner of Landressy St and London Rd, across London Road from the old high level Bridgeton station building? by lalajia (Fri 10th Feb 2023 9:08am)
  • I agree with hamas, even if you could, you probably shouldn't. There's safe bits of disused railway to explore out east of the city, I spent lockdown finding sections of the tracks that used to lead to the now derelict Carmyle rail viaduct. You also probably shouldnt climb up on it, but there's easy access from the Carmyle side :) by lalajia (Fri 10th Feb 2023 9:05am)

  • There are folk in the FB group earnestly trying to say its "Cumslang", not Camby. I kind of feel that's an urban dictionary thing rather than a town name, but they seem happy enough with it. by lalajia (Wed 6th Sep 2023 7:11pm)
  • Thank you for posting this, it's driving me merrily mad. For anyone else working their way through the list of disused & former stations, or what stations looked like back in the days of black&white, Railscot is a great archive of old photos and information [https://www.railscot.co.uk/locationlist.html](https://www.railscot.co.uk/locationlist.html) by lalajia (Fri 15th Sep 2023 3:37pm)
  • yeah, Cathcart station's line goes over Clarkston Road on a bridge, not under it in a double tunnel. Mystery station is down in a cutting, not raised up on an embankment. by lalajia (Fri 15th Sep 2023 3:46pm)
  • Sorry, but I'm just not seeing it. This is a 1964 pic of Muirend looking down onto the platform and the surroundings are just very different, with a goods shed off to the side and additional rail line, where the mystery photo is more suburban with plants leading upto houses, rather than looking as industrial. [https://www.railscot.co.uk/img/46/678/](https://www.railscot.co.uk/img/46/678/) The mystery photo is looking like a tourist destination to me, both buildings on the road over the bridge, to the left and right seem to have signage on them, like shops or hotels. I've tried Greenock, Gourock and Port Glasgow stations, but no joy yet. by lalajia (Fri 15th Sep 2023 4:38pm)
  • The buildings to the right look like normal postwar council housing scheme buildings to me. Especially the one closest to the camera, its a typical close door. by lalajia (Fri 15th Sep 2023 7:19pm)
  • Same, but everytime someone re-suggests a station, I go look again anyway! It has to be a built up area, like fairly urban, as you can see older style sandstone buildings on the road crossing the railway to the right. then you've got the more modern postwar council scheme housing buildings to the right of the railway coming towards the camera. The left of the railway is unclear, but I think that's a pub or hotel with its name in big letters (unreadable even with zoom), and it could be an old style garage in front of it. I'm off to check the south suburban line in Edinburgh next... by lalajia (Fri 15th Sep 2023 7:15pm)

  • And separately thrown away the leaflet, the foil packet it comes in, and the wee strip ripped off the top of the foil too. You can track their passage down the street from the vape shop, like you're an urban forager. by lalajia (Sat 30th Sep 2023 7:09pm)

  • yeah, but the space they're taking up could sell one £20 pair of shoes every two days for a month, and earn the shop £10 a day, rather than the £150 pair once a month earning them £5 a day, for a very very rough comparison. by lalajia (Mon 23rd Oct 2023 2:12pm)

  • Why don't you have a look at the east end of the line. [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cathcart\_Circle\_Lines#/media/File:Cathcart\_Circle\_Lines.png](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cathcart_Circle_Lines#/media/File:Cathcart_Circle_Lines.png) by lalajia (Mon 6th Nov 2023 8:21pm)
  • I am looking and I am so annoyed. There's like a 2m bit where the lines merge at the end of the platform. Could they not pause there, and I'll hop out the drivers door.... by lalajia (Mon 6th Nov 2023 9:12pm)
