If you're heading into Pollokshields you'd be better avoiding that area altogether and coming off the Kingston Bridge at Tradeston and going via Scotland Street / St Andrews Drive. You'll still meet some traffic but nothing like the traffic at that junction. Here's the route: [https://goo.gl/maps/3K9YvRgMzSBLGMvo8](https://goo.gl/maps/3K9YvRgMzSBLGMvo8)

I switched from 3 to Vodafone due to city centre data being horrific and haven't looked back. If you subscribe to anything like Spotify, Vodafone's ents package becomes cheaper than 3 and end up with more data.

The South City Way at Shields Rd is horrible for pedestrians - there's a bike route straight into a pedestrian crossing. I go from pavement to pedestrian crossing and have to dodge bikes at full speed coming round a corner from behind with no warning.

No reason not to be around with a 5 year old, but regardless, as a 36 year old I don't want to be walking through that and I'm allowed out at 10pm. Shite behaviour.

I did it online for the first time yesterday (also don't trust their fairly crappy Oyster equivalent) and it activated when I went through the barrier 15 mins later - perhaps not as terrible as it once was! u/kai_enby you can buy a smartcard season ticket from the ticket desks or from the machines - think it's "add season ticket" or something. Would recommend getting one - if you use it 10 times a week and occasional other times it's definitely worth it.

See also: Airbnb guests. I've had multiple guests ask me the code and when I couldn't tell them, happily came back and told me it in case I could be of help to future guests... Might have to start asking for pay / tips for my concierge duties.

Pollokshields. No one looking to own / occupy wants to live under an Airbnb (and I very much understand why.) Will probably end up selling to another Airbnb landlord and adding another locksafe to the outside of the building.

That's an absolutely fascinating article. I remember being aware that those flats were extortionate at the time (must have been quite a topic of conversation for me to remember from the age of six...) but reading now that a two-bed maisonette was £164,250 in 1989... incredible.
by
vollol
(Wed 11th Dec 2019 1:46am)
I have. Unfortunately the only way they can try to enforce it is to fine them £5k for not having the correct planning permission, which they're reluctant to do as apparently if the fine is paid, they can't fine them again for the same thing, so they basically end up with planning permission. Sounds mad, but this is what the council have told me.

I'd absolutely go housing association if you can. If not, LPM are the least worst I've encountered (but that's mainly been in big developments). Hacking & Paterson and Ross & Liddel - do not even consider.

I think you might be a wee bit under informed on that. A few things to read: [http://www.simonscotland.org/help-someone/rough-sleeping/](http://www.simonscotland.org/help-someone/rough-sleeping/) [https://planetradio.co.uk/clyde/local/news/homeless-report-rough-sleeping-glasgow-much-worse-first-thought/](https://planetradio.co.uk/clyde/local/news/homeless-report-rough-sleeping-glasgow-much-worse-first-thought/) [https://www.thenational.scot/news/17859216.many-people-still-sleeping-rough-glasgow/](https://www.thenational.scot/news/17859216.many-people-still-sleeping-rough-glasgow/) [https://www.dailyrecord.co.uk/news/scottish-news/glasgows-mile-misery-number-homeless-13067774](https://www.dailyrecord.co.uk/news/scottish-news/glasgows-mile-misery-number-homeless-13067774) There is no magic wand that suddenly provides enough beds, or suitable accommodation, for people sleeping on the streets. There are a lot of different circumstances out there, but it's not necessarily a choice.

I was looking at their menu yesterday and have massively high hopes for their French onion soup so glad to hear it's good! OP - French food in this city is generally poor., unfortunately. Le Petit Cochon looks great but I haven't personally been. The only other place I'd suggest for French food (although they don't do French onion soup) is Bar Brett on GWR. A few very good French dishes on the menu, as well as tremendous wine and cheese.

Echoing previous comments, you're going to have a great time! On pets in flats, theres a current thread with good advice here (don't be put off by the title!): [https://www.reddit.com/r/glasgow/comments/f1p25y/trying\_to\_rent\_a\_place\_that\_allows\_dogs\_is\_murder/](https://www.reddit.com/r/glasgow/comments/f1p25y/trying_to_rent_a_place_that_allows_dogs_is_murder/) If you're used to Manhattan, you're best aiming for the West End as others have said. Everything is walkable, you're close to the city centre (and far enough away!) with nightlife / open mics on your doorstep. If you need to go further afield you'll never be more than a fiver or so in a taxi for most places. The south side is definitely lots more fun than it used to be and a bit of a pain to get to from most west places, but worth the occasional visit for some awesome bars and restaurants. (You'd be looking at ten pounds or more to get to Shawlands by Uber from the west end.) Parks all over Glasgow (being the dear green place) are brilliant, but not to be visited at night in general (in my opinion.) During the day, absolutely fine, but they're not well lit and can be a bit sketchy at night. Taking the dog for a walk around the west end at night will be absolutely fine though, but I'd recommend sticking to main streets just in case. Glasgow is a brilliant place to live but, like any big city, there can be shady characters wherever you go - keep your wits about you and never, EVER let someone put flyers down on top of your phone. Finally, on your anti-semitism question, as folk have said, it's not really a thing. The Jewish community are mainly focused around Giffnock, where the main synagogue is, and the south side in general, but you'll find the community across the city. Pretty much every big supermarket will have kosher food too. There's a bit of the Glasgow Necropolis that is a dedicated Jewish section that I think is really interesting and worth a visit when you're here: [https://jewish-heritage-europe.eu/2017/07/07/visiting-glasgows-major-jewish-sites/](https://jewish-heritage-europe.eu/2017/07/07/visiting-glasgows-major-jewish-sites/) The whole place is really interesting and well worth a visit. I used to use it at lunchtime at work for a hearty walk up a hill! If you want a pal when you arrive, drop me a message! More than happy to show you around in exchange for dog pets :)

There was a weird trend a couple of summers ago where guys would come up to people sitting outside cafes and try to sell them something. As per of the schtick they’d put their flyers down on the table, on top of your phone. When you managed to get them to bugger off l, they’d lift the flyers off the table and your phone with it. Happened to a few people I know! So right in your face but easy to miss until they’re long gone!

Spot on advice! Also worth having an alert on [Scarlet Mist](http://www.scarletmist.com/). It was an early ethical ticket exchange site but it's still going and always worth a look. Not sure what the script is with e-tickets these days but I'd avoid if possible - there's potential for folk to sell them and still use them, so if you don't get to the door first, you're not getting in.

Hey u/lil-flump! I sent you a chat message after you started reposting my comment on irrelevant posts, but realise not everyone uses that! If you need some help or even just a friendly ear in these weird times I'm happy to chat with you. To explain, I said "don't be an arsehole" because your comment belittled someone who was genuinely asking for help. Remember, if you don't have anything nice (or helpful) to say, keep quiet. Now, you are more than welcome to repost that comment on pictures of my beautiful kitten, but honestly I think the members of r/ragdolls, r/startledcats and r/aww will just think you're lost. Probably just your battery - get a trickle charger and give that a bash. Or get someone to jump you and take it on a longer drive. Wee short runs aren't usually enough, particularly for old batteries - needs a wee motorway blast every once in a while.

I was there, but kept very much to the outskirts. The vast majority were respecting social distancing and I saw very few without masks, but as you can see from the pictures it was impossible for the crowd around the column. Personally I wouldn’t have gone near that section, but some of the images taken from the column are not representative of what I saw. Foreshortening makes people look a lot closer than they were.

I know you're set on a kitten, but from recent experience (mine was just neutered yesterday) kittens can be very hard work! My last cat was a rescue, around two years old so still had quite kitteny behaviour and was with me for 14 years until February of this year. If you want to stick with a kitten, put the word out with family, friends and people you trust - we're in the midst of kitten season and if you keep your ear to the ground you might find someone having unexpected kittens. Avoid Gumtree etc. - you'll be funding unethical kitten farms. And if you do get a kitten, **get it spayed / neutered.**

My laptop speakers are pish so all I can hear is the odd bang (over the noise of my own neighbours right now...) It's incredibly hard to record the sound of another flat and accurately represent HOW loud, constant and irritating it is - I've tried to do it with the airbnb upstairs from me so I totally understand. (Imagine 8 Danish guys partying in a two bed flat above you for a week, and then it being 8 teenagers from Aberdeen kinda shite, over and over again.) A complete noise diary is the way to go, including everything you've done to mitigate it like speaking to them is what the council need. They will send environmental health out if it's bad enough, but if it's general neighbour noise / result of the shit building materials in modern flats they might not do that. You're going to have to demonstrate that it's deliberate and out of order, rather than just as a result of the construction of the building.
by
vollol
(Wed 2nd Sep 2020 11:51pm)
Guitar if it’s loud enough definitely counts if it’s after 11pm and before 7am - think those are the times the council runs with for noise nuisance. The first thing they’ll ask you for is dates, times and a description of the disturbance, as well as dates and times you’ve asked them to keep it down. Have that sorted before you call them. I will say, i think it’s pretty tough to get any action on this, but wish you the best of luck mate.

I saw someone the other day offering family tree building and it turned out they were doing it because they're Mormon. The Mormons provide free family tree research for people and use the information to baptise the dead into the church. A peculiar thing, but worth being aware of if you don't necessarily want your ancestors involuntarily baptised! New builds are a bit of a false economy. You're overpaying for the area as stands, and betting that it'll go up. Appreciate that fixed price is attractive in this market but you can get a whole lot more bang for your buck buying something in an existing development, with all the snagging sorted out and the ability to see what the neighbourhood is like before you move in. It's a tough decision though. Good luck with your house hunt!

During the week you can drive through Pollok Park. They’ve banned cars at weekends for the foreseeable I think, but you’ll be fine on a weekday evening.

Right enough but it’s a possibility. On a weekday evening i don’t think it’s a massive deal. I’m glad it’s closed at the weekend though. Far too much traffic through there.

I live alone in Glasgow and generally feel safe. I live on a fairly busy street and the ground floor so occasionally get folk coming up to my windows but it's generally harmless. When there have been issues (a guy who lived across the road decided to start sending me mad love notes, sticking them through my letterbox because the main door was constantly left open) the police have been quick to respond and have a word. Probably worth mentioning that the "love notes" got increasingly threatening... I wasn't just calling the police because he asked for my number... I'd do as others have suggested - it's really not a problem living alone in Glasgow but just worth getting to know your potential close / street first.

I can't help with the school question, but figuring out where you want to live will be a big factor in enrolling in a school! Presuming you're looking to rent if you're only here for your degree? If you want to live outside the city in a house with a garden, it'll depend a bit on your budget and will likely get you into a few different council areas which will have different processes for school enrolment. My first thought would be somewhere like East Kilbride - it's a decent distance from the city but the train to the city centre is only \~35 mins and there's plenty of family accommodation. If you can share a bit more info on what you're looking for / budget etc. it'll be easier to give you better recommendations. There's also some good info on the Wiki here: [https://wiki.glasgow.social/moving\_to\_glasgow](https://wiki.glasgow.social/moving_to_glasgow)

If you're not set on a house with a garden, that opens up a lot more! You'll need to head fairly far out of the city for a house with a garden without a pretty big budget but if you're happy with a flat you can go a bit closer to the city. Really just depends what your priorities are. Schooling - plenty of really great schools in all the local authority areas but the ones with most competition for places tend to be in East Renfrewshire (Giffnock / Clarkston / Newton Mearns). I think at primary level it's slightly less, but you'll be competing against parents who are trying to get their kids into the secondary schools there and it can get messy. Area - if you're looking for a flat, there are more options closer to the city like the west end or the southside if you want to be a bit closer to pubs / restaurants. I would say that if you have a young family, being a bit further out with more space / cheaper rent might suit better as long as you're not bothered by a 30-45 min commute to uni each way. Great advice from the commenter below on schooling but as I said, figure out where you want to live first and then get in touch with the specific council about schooling arrangements. Best of luck!

Fair play to you in being open to a discussion on this. I live near-ish Ibrox and don’t support any football team. You’re right that this behaviour is just a segment of the fan base - plenty of my pals who support Rangers were posting pics of them having a great celebration in their garden yesterday - but this segment is unbelievably destructive. I’d suggest that the clubs (Celtic too) make a concerted effort to identify these people and ban them from the stadiums but I imagine that the majority there yesterday don’t pay for a season ticket and just see it as an excuse to get out and cause havoc. A stronger condemnation from the fans in general (again on both sides) would go some way - as soon as anything like the sectarian chants start up its self-policed by the fans telling them to wrap it. I’ve seen a lot of folk who weren’t there still defending what happened - if everyone whether fan or not came out and condemned what is objectively horrendous behaviour and didn’t try to blame the police, the government or Pollokshields it would be easier to see a road out of this mess. But they’re not. Thuggery, violence and destruction is being defended by large numbers and there are attempts to pass the blame.

I live nearby and today’s fire was another devastating one. There’s speculation on local groups that there is sadly one fatality. The number of major fires in Pollokshields is unbelievable - I count 4 in the last year or so. Never really hear what caused them. The kids setting fires in the quadrant last night was ridiculous. Gangs of kids cut about there every summer being wee shits. I nearly crashed my car on Kenmure Street last year after they threw a water balloon through my window. In concept, pretty funny, in reality it’s a bit of a fucking shock when you’re driving and very dangerous.

Not sure you meant to reply to me? But on your point, people’s laziness and ignorance is horrific, I’m with you. Living in a development where lazy landlords just dump stuff is challenging - how am I meant to fix that?
by
vollol
(Mon 28th Jun 2021 6:41pm)
I understand, but quoting me with something I hadn't said is a bit confusing. That's 100% not my thought process. I wish I could convince my neighbours to be more sustainable, but they are anonymous landlords who just dump loads of stuff out of nowhere, and often in the middle of the night. GCC might save some money, but that then pushes everything on to private owners in big flat developments like mine (fly tipping will increase and GCC won't touch it so we have to pay private companies to take it away) or it pushes it onto the streets and lanes nearby, where GCC will have to pay. Either way, it's not an "I pay too much council tax" issue - it's a how to deal with a very real, easily recognised waste problem. A £35 tariff is not the answer.
by
vollol
(Mon 28th Jun 2021 6:53pm)
No worries! It’s a complex issue for sure. My immediate reaction to this is it’s going to make the issue in the south side worse. That’s based on many years of living here, and while I would love for people to take more responsibility, the landlords are going to be the issue.
by
vollol
(Mon 28th Jun 2021 7:03pm)
That used to get dealt with by the regular uplifts - if the uplift was on a Friday, guys would go round in vans and pick up the stuff worth taking. Making it an individual uplift service increased costs and reduced recycling.

Second Offshore and Waterstones recommendations. If you want to work in a pub where you definitely won't get any hassle, Brewdog do a deal for unlimited tea and coffee all day and a pint when you're finished for 7 quid: [https://www.brewdog.com/uk/locations/bar-experience/desk-dog](https://www.brewdog.com/uk/locations/bar-experience/desk-dog) There's one just across from the Kelvingrove Art Gallery which is a nice wee space. Second the advice to go to your local councillors if the police don't turn up in time. Are you in a block of flats? Try and get your neighbours involved as well. I feel your pain as I live on one of the routes folk drive round in circles on with their shite exhausts and those stupid road trike things. At least here they're just there for a few moments and then fuck off, before reappearing 20 mins later. We got local council involved and now have tonnes of speedhumps - arguably makes it worse as they speed up for 15ft, then slow to a crawl because they can't get over them at any more than 1mph, then speed up again for the next 15ft. One occasionally scrapes their chassis along the ground if they hit it too fast... can't deny that's a bit satisfying.

No idea if the baths are still there, but I believe those loos are now gender neutral so it's possible they might be available for use... They had to close Shields Road a couple of weeks ago because the potholes on the narrowed bridge were so dangerous and completely unavoidable. There were police there redirecting traffic for about 12 hours while they did an emergency repair which lasted about 2 days. Repairing promptly would presumably cost less, but I report it every day and it doesn't seem to make any difference. The bridge seems to be some kind of war of wills between GCC and Network Rail, but honestly, closing it for a few months would be absolutely worth it at this stage.
by
vollol
(Tue 22nd Feb 2022 4:14pm)
Absolutely. They put in the narrowing fences as a "temporary" measure about 20 years ago and have just fucked about ever since. From what I've heard the bridge is absolutely gubbed and needs rebuilt. They're doing the one on Nithsdale Road in the next few weeks and it's going to take 3 months, but the Shields Road one is much much busier and I would say more urgent. I live nearby and get notifications that they're doing work on the line (in the middle of the night) every couple of weeks so it seems like desperate attempts to repair a ruined route.
by
vollol
(Tue 22nd Feb 2022 4:29pm)
Yeah, definitely don't think the barren landscape at the bridge helps much, but it's a major artery for accessing all of the motorways for the south side so it really needs to be a higher priority. I just checked back and this was the response councillor Jon Molyneux shared from GCC: "Regarding your enquiry for an update on discussions with Network Rail about the replacement of the bridge, Network Rail is working on the design of the new bridge and is going to have a cost estimate in the next few months. At present there is not a definite date for works to commence although at present Network Rail is aiming to start the works for the replacement of this bridge sometime in 2023, although this date is not definitive and could be delayed." Jon is a decent councillor so trust him to keep the pressure on, but it really does seem that NR & GCC are at absolute odds here.

Have to say I hard disagree on all of these, except Grahamston as I haven't tried it. Last time I was in Butchershop I had the gristliest steak I've ever had - 15 years ago it was great, but it's gone massively downhill. Miller & Carter is absolutely overrated and the quality of their steaks vs the price is ridiculous. Anchor Line is part of DiMaggios Group, and it absolutely lives down to that. All important, but point 6 in particular is problematic. It feels, as a GCC taxpayer myself, like we’re shouldering a significant burden for public functions that are enjoyed extensively by residents of neighbouring councils. Glasgow Life is clearly a disaster of an arm’s length organisation, and consumes a huge chunk of budget. Call folk from neighbouring councils tourists all you like, but it’s a hard pill to swallow when I pay more council tax in a two bed flat than pals a few miles away (in much nicer surroundings with better bin collections etc) pay for a four bed house.

Years ago, on cup final hibs / hearts at hampden, I’d broken my wrist and was heading into a & e wearing a vest which was the only thing I could get on. A hearts fan with his 8 year old in tow shouted “nice tits love” in my face right outside the door of the Vicky. I was too stunned to say much but it’s really stayed with me. What a horrible man, and that poor wee boy.

If you think a solution to your problem is murder, perhaps it might not only be your spouse your choose that for? That speaks to more significant problems, but I wouldn’t say someone who murdered someone close to them is harmless once they’ve offed that person. It’s someone who thinks that is an acceptable route to resolve an issue. That doesn’t make them harmless.

There are several airbnbs in my close. Glasgow City Council do absolutely nothing about it in my experience. Fortunately the ones in my close seem now be more like this kind of let (several months) which is much better, but when they were advertised as party flats it was a nightmare and no amount of reporting could prompt the council to enforce that rule.

I reckon we went to the same school. Agree on the shit you had to fight against. It wasn’t major, but if I could choose to live without it I would have. I think it really comes down to which is the better school, but of the kids have been baptised it’ll make it easier to get in to the Catholic school. The can then (like I did) just refuse to participate (politely) in any religious services.

(Mon 11th Jul 2022 4:11am)
I went to a Catholic school in the 90s and there was significant sex education, just with a strong recommendation that abstinence is the only “acceptable” contraception and no sex before marriage was definitely preached. I certainly didn’t leave school not knowing what an ovary was. Perhaps the fact that your friend didn’t even realise he was at a Catholic school until after he left is an indication of his level of general understanding? And I definitely didn’t have to pray multiple times a day… a few times a year maybe, but definitely not every day. Pro-life clubs can absolutely get to fuck though.

Sounds like bullshit. I know the (likely) school, went to it in the 90s and was taught both in biology and RE. In Glasgow right now you won’t find much - everyone will be over in Edinburgh. Once the students are back there will be more going on (check out STAG - Student Theatre at Glasgow, at the fringe this month but have a few performances a year.) If you’re up for heading to Edinburgh this week, you could just about do it on your budget with a bus ticket on the mega bus (£10 return) and a £5 ticket from assembly festival for any of their shows if you have a Glasgow postcode. Plenty to choose from! Think the cheap tix end Sunday.

As a driver, I completely agree. Much prefer it when cyclists are fully visible and acting like a car on the road. One thing that does bother me slightly is when cyclists coast along large stretches. Yeah, I actually submitted the appeal before spotting the evidence, completely convinced of my innocence as I fully believed I'd paid the parking fee at the correct place. When I saw they had photos, I looked out of curiosity and that's what made me realise my mistake with the location number (20102 vs 20120) so technically I am in the wrong - I was definitely parked (literally under the sign hah) in the 20120 zone. Just completely confused by these pics - at first I thought they were suggesting these were evidence of a paper ticket I had bought, that they had somehow gotten out of my locked car but that can't be. Also wondered if they were trying to suggest that that was the time my RingGo expired, but that doesn't make sense with the times I paid for, never mind the fact I paid at the location around the corner!

I hadn’t been for a while but took my cat in a few weeks ago to find they’d set up a cat friendly bit of the waiting room. True, but I don’t think the OP was asking about whether it was better to be in a couple or not. And if he or she was to find a partner, that wouldn’t reduce their tax burden unless they decided to find a job that paid half the salary. The only point where it doesn’t pay to earn more is somewhere around £50-60k, and only if you have children because you lose child tax credits.

Argyll arcade - pricy stuff, but some great finds. Starry starry night on ruthven lane, but they only have a few bits and pieces at a time. There’s the antiques warehouse off the broomielaw (I think has reopened?) and usually a few of the sellers have jewellery but hit and miss.

Very shady. I wish they’d sort that burnt out building. Also stop parking cars all over the pavement.

I've been looking for similar and found this: [https://shop.peterdrew.com/collections/brook-taverner-for-women](https://shop.peterdrew.com/collections/brook-taverner-for-women) Haven't bought yet, but they look fairly decent and not massively expensive.

If you get one let me know if they’re any good!

If you're in the southside (and they're usefully sized boxes) you can give them away here: [https://www.facebook.com/groups/1298023300537746/](https://www.facebook.com/groups/1298023300537746/) Or failing that, the dump.

It’s not in the greatest place, but it’s a lovely tree with an interesting story behind it

This would be my recommendation. Enjoyed it last time I was in.

That's great, thank you! I just don't want to spend £70 on booking when I know we likely won't use that number of tokens.

Goldeneye is on my hit list! Did you get food there? Decent pizzas or better to eat elsewhere?

Brilliant. There’s only 4 of us and the amount they wanted to book was mental.

That’s annoying to hear! Taking my nephew who doesn’t drink so was hoping it would be fun night out for him rather than the dinner and drinks we’d prefer to do!

Shall do. Thanks for the heads up. If anyone has any other suggestions of where to take an 18 year old up for a uni open day who isn’t into drinking then I’m all ears!

Haha fair! That’s good to know. I just didn’t want to book with 60 tokens and find we don’t use them! Sounds like walk up is easy enough, no doubt I’ll end up handing over more than £70!

Yeah that sounds like our best plan. Doesn’t seem to be much advantage to booking.

That’s good to know. I imagine we’ll easily spend £20 per person but paying up front felt like a bit too much of a commitment for somewhere I’ve never been!

I broke and put my heating on for a few hours last week. Delighted that my 16 year old boiler hasn’t carked it but living in fear of my bill.

Yep, only place to go. They know most of the requirements but handy to bring a copy of the latest ones for your country. Really helpful folk.

They’ve been piloting it for ages. Just these clubs will be able to stay open til 4 if they want to. In reality most don’t as they naturally get quiet enough to close at 3:30. But they’re not throwing hundreds of punters out forcibly at 3 on the dot.

There was a developer application a few years back to turn those buildings into houses and commercial blocks. The plans looked pretty good but went nowhere.

Yeah. It would really help the area. It’s an absolute wasteland along that whole road, where there used to be a community.
