  • Disclaimer: I'm not a rolling tobacco smoker. From time immemorial there is always someone selling pouches of rolling tobacco at the Barras, just listen for them shouting 'tabacca!' periodically to hawk their wares. I have no fucking clue about quality price brands etc, but its liable to be either shitty or fake brands or genuine stuff that has fallen off the back of a lorry. If you have never been, going to The Barras is never a dull experience. by casusbelli16 (Sun 10th Mar 2019 8:36am)

  • I worked in a concession in central years ago, dogs are routinely used to check areas that aren't accessible to the public but as a transport hub would be useful to nefarious folks with ill intent, even back then (circa 2000). by casusbelli16 (Tue 2nd Apr 2019 9:37am)

  • Prior to Sept 2001, while working night-shifts a mate used to park his old beat-up runabout banger opposite, figuring, where could be safer than the then Stathclyde Police HQ? well... Returning one morning the found footprints on the roof and bonnet of his car, some bell-end had ran over the car denting it in a few places. Upon enquiring of Strathclydes finest inside if their CCTV cameras that covered the street could shed light on upon who was the rapscallion that perpetrated this heinous crime. When asked the surly officer at the reception desk informed my friend, "Yeah those cameras don't record, sorry". Either they didn't record and surveillance was *very* different prior to 2001 or the officer couldn't be bothered to review footage for the minor crime, not sure which would be worse. by casusbelli16 (Fri 12th Apr 2019 9:26pm)

  • I was brought up in a nice area but we'd still disappear for hours at a time come home manky after crawling through a chain link fence into a derelict factory, get a pure doing off my maw then do it again the next day. Felt more like Small Faces than Trainspotting. Old men frequenting pubs are a constant, the same wee old men in their bunnets can still be seen outside pubs today, that same scene repeats itself throughout Glasgow only the faces change. "Chief" Bromden from One Flew Over the Cukoo's Nest expresses this most eloquently, when he describes the whiskey bottle drinking the life from his father as he puts it to his lips, you can see that playing out over the years until today when you pass these Glasgow old mans pubs. Until the mid 90's Coffee shops weren't a thing before Seattle Coffee company paved the was for *Bucks in the UK. For a real coffee you had to go into an Italian cafe, Begbie and your mates would call you a bender for not wanting to drink alcohol. by casusbelli16 (Thu 13th Aug 2020 11:12am)

  • After the obligatory, "ask yer maw" I have a tale about that area. My work buddies were once talking to a pair of police officers and asking them to regale them with tales of the worst aspects of human depravity. They were undergoing surveillance down Anderson way in the late 90's. Glasgow still had spate of recent unsolved murders involving working ladies. They observed an individual acting shady. He would watch the sex workers and following an interaction with a client would go up the lane were the transaction occurred, they observed him doing this a number of times, thinking they had caught the activities of a serial killer this garnered enough suspicion to follow the next time it occurred. Turns out after the hooker and client had finished the deed he was finding the used condom in the piss-soaked stinking lane and sooking the sperm out of the johnny-bag. When confronted and questioned he revealed in he did this to get his sexual thrills. After arresting him for something like reckless endangerment or such, he was Sectioned. Anyway that's me back to Carstairs I'm only out on day release for that one. by casusbelli16 (Thu 23rd Sep 2021 8:25pm)

To which the Garage bouncer replied, "sorry I didn't know my fly was open ZIP!". On the bus I heard a girl explain to her friend who was just off the boat ( not a slight they were just off the boat and on their penultimate leg of their journey to their lodgings) Glasgow people call a dog, "a dug" they swap vowels with neither rhyme nor reason, there's no sense to it. by casusbelli16 (Wed 20th Jul 2022 6:43pm)

  • Many a true word spoken in jest: I used to work on Union St back in the early 2000s we would regularly see folk getting picked up mini-buses, they had travelled up with suitcases and wooden packing cases full of khat. Didn't realise it at the time until I started reading about Blackhawk Down when the local fighting forces took a break to get high on khat, it was at that point the penny dropped and I knew I was looking at mules ferrying up cargos of as much the stuff they could carry. by casusbelli16 (Sun 7th Aug 2022 1:24pm)

  • Garnethill Park is like the opening credits from Monkey Dust. It's ok during the day, but be aware that's were a number of the service users from the homeless shelters hang out, this might change when the weather turns. I had to flag up a number of needles there to mums who were letting their kids play just out of sight down the steps, they were having a lovely picnic up top and didn't need to be dealing with that during the summer. On the positive side Friends of Garnethill Greenspaces have done some amazing work in the lanes and in gardens, people look after not just their own area. by casusbelli16 (Mon 26th Sep 2022 3:14pm)

  • Litter picking, as a kid I helped in the Yoker clean up campaign, last month I passed my same primary school where they were out teaching the kids to pick litter, it doesn't teach the kids not to drop litter in fact it teaches them if you drop it some other sap will pick it up, it has been endemic and getting worse as council budgets tighten and services reduce. I spoke to the cleansing workers for a needle uplift they used to have 2 bulk uplift vans for the city centre with 3 staff, now it's 1 van and 2 staff for the same coverage. That being said a volunteer group blitzing 1 area makes a great difference; there was a fellow bagging litter on Suachiehall St. during the bin strikes. A little goes a long way. Social Inclusion, there as still a lot of folk suffering post lockdown many organisations that provided this pre-lockdown shut down. • Existing cycle networks lacks upkeep. We had a phenomenal amount of cycling infrastructure in and around Glasgow, if the only time it is maintained is when there is a cycling event or commonwealth games on it may as well not be there. I even remember a cadre of cyclists about 15 years ago slowing traffic down cycling into oncoming traffic, as a protest, on the Broomielaw, whilst completely ignoring the purpose built cycle and pedestrian area next to the Clyde at that point. Tremendous resources were poured into cycle lanes over lock-doon running parallel or close to main roads cue them crumbling now and being unfit for purpose as they lack maintenance. Cycle routes end abruptly sometimes into oncoming traffic or pavements, (looking at you Berkley St.) presenting hazards to pedestrians, cyclist and other road users alike. Watch out for August 3-13 when cycling in Glasgow is highlighted on the worlds stage where neglected infrastructure will get their decadly tarmacking, only if it has to be used for an event. by casusbelli16 (Sat 18th Feb 2023 4:15pm)

If you are with a housing association ask to speak to their Welfare Rights team they can apply for assistance to get you set up with a bed, matress, carpets, white goods and a couch. Carpet fitting and delivery happened quickly when the application was accepted. The quality is basic but it does the job. If you are not with a housing association you can still contact your caseworker assigned when you were homeless to help you with an application. As I was in and it was closeby I offered to walk them round to the location and we chatted. In the city centre they had 1 bulk uplift van staffed by 2. Previously this was 2 vans staffed by 3 each. Scale this up city wide and you get the scope of the cuts and the resulting midden it has created. • I was perplexed by the use of 'blown up' in the very first sentence. Given our long standing history as a tinderbox-city I was thinking a more pyro-centric desription would have been better, so well known it's got its own flair here. Then the author pulled me back in with the descriptions of the Weatley properties and Redrow flats demolition towards the end. As the penny dropped and I inwardly said, I see what you did there I was spectacularly wrong misjudging them so hastily. I don't mind admitting when I'm wrong, I guess that's why the author is director emetrius of the Design Museum in London and I'm a bell-end on the other end of a keyboard on reddit. by casusbelli16 (Thu 30th Mar 2023 1:06am)

  • I called the council for a needle uplift, they came the next day couldn't find the location I described to them. They called me to get details of exactly where it was, I went out to meet them and walked them round, in that time the guys explained since last year (2021) (this was summer of 2022) the coverage for the city centre has reduced from two bulk uplift vans with a crew of three in each to a single van with a crew of two expected to do the same workload. Clearly unachievable targets it's a case of the guys at the (literal and figurative) sharp end prioritising the worst and most urgent jobs. That's one example, scale that up through the entire council area and you get an idea of the shortfalls facing staff due to cuts made by the powers that be. Resulting in measures that were once temporary stop-gaps to plug shortfall in resources becoming normal now. by casusbelli16 (Fri 12th May 2023 9:02am)
