  • in edinburgh nightclubs are only open till 5 during the festival or at new year. might be a couple of other special occasions. the alcohol-related opening hours are hard limits in scottish law. in england they have had 24-hour licensing since i think 2005, before which the times were slightly more restrictive than what they are now in scotland - it was 11pm for pubs and 2am for nightclubs/late licence. now it's entirely at the discretion of the local council. and in practice most actual 24h licences have been given to the big tescos. on the flipside, supermarkets and most shops in england are only allowed to open for 6 hours on sundays. threw me for a loop when i needed to buy something at 4:05pm on a sunday and couldn't. by cmzraxsn (Sat 9th Jul 2022 1:02pm)

  • Done. Felt like the internet page at the end wasn't as comprehensive as the one about alcohol. In my case I've definitely played more vidya games since lockdown started. I used to be a big film buff, but I found that films didn't take my mind off of things in the same way that they did before, whereas video games actually required me to engage with the material actively. (I mean I was also a gamer before, but suddenly had a lot extra free time) gdi now i have to get working on my dissertation project, had to put it off because i caught covid last week. by cmzraxsn (Tue 26th Jul 2022 7:37pm)

  • Reminds me how i lived in an apartment in japan, and started hearing thwacking noises late at night. At first i just thought it was the building- they have to be a little bit creaky because of earthquakes over there- but then i noticed the thwacks were coming in groups of three. Pretty sure my neighbours had bought a dartboard and were playing right behind my head. I just moved to glasgow a few weeks ago from edinburgh. Had a few funny noises, including a pub across the street that does karaoke on saturdays (excruciating to hear), and last night i had people buzzing on my doorbell at 2am (mistook me for another flat??), but whatever it is it beats my mum's place in edinburgh, which is right by an ambulance route. Sirens fucking constantly at all hours, since it's also by a crossroads where the ambulances can't see round the corner. by cmzraxsn (Wed 14th Sep 2022 11:07am)
  • my sibling showed up right outside my door last week when we arranged to meet up and it turns out they knew that there's a service buzzer on almost every door that just lets anyone in until 12pm. i haven't lived in a stairwell like this since i was a kid (as i say, spent almost a decade out of the country, then i was staying at my mum's), so i'd forgotten all these little bits of weirdness about tenements. by cmzraxsn (Wed 14th Sep 2022 3:13pm)

  • My story's a bit different from most of yours because I only moved to Glasgow recently. I moved back to my mum's in Edinburgh - before it all hit I was in Tokyo, but the sudden uncertainty about border restrictions plus the fact that my dad had just passed a few months prior meant that I made a very split-second decision to return. And ... my partner is still in Japan, and I haven't seen him since I left except through a screen. They only just opened the border to non-visa holders *this week*. So i fly on the 24th. And yeah, the whole thing has *completely* broken me, and it upsets me that people are now pretending like it never happened. Like my best friend has started getting angry if I talk about what happened. He's not an idiot about it like he knows covid is still around (though he did go and catch covid this week), but he now thinks I'm "obsessed" with not catching the disease because I'm no longer comfortable going to very crowded places. (I did catch it, and it was horrible. I don't want a repeat of that if I can help it. But I don't think wearing a mask in the supermarket is a sign of obsession.) So maybe for me moving to glasgow recently - and getting to fly out to Japan again - are me finally trying to claw back my independence and sanity. by cmzraxsn (Sat 15th Oct 2022 10:06pm)

  • neighbours smoke in the stairwell and leave garbage bags on the landing overnight instead of taking them downstairs. i probably won't contest the smoking because i'd rather they do it there than expose their children to it, and if my boyfriend comes to visit that's where i'll get him to smoke. (though they leave ash on the stairs) the garbage thing... might have to start being pass-agg about it. downstairs neighbour cooks curries i think and the smell wafts into my kitchen somehow - though so do i. one time though he was dry-frying chillies and left his front door open and the smoke from it made me choke by cmzraxsn (Sat 5th Nov 2022 6:44am)
  • Seeing this lane is one of the things that made me want to move over from edinburgh. Like it actually feels like someone cares about local residents, even if it's just one person in GCC. Edinburgh's totally geared to tourists and tourists only. During lockdown they added some "cycle lanes" but they were just hastily dropped-down bollards on pothole-filled terrain. I know a lot of glasgow feels like that too, but it actually feels like they're going to change it at some point. by cmzraxsn (Wed 9th Nov 2022 2:06am)
  • It's also kind of disappointing because one of the other reasons I moved is that it's too expensive to live in Edinburgh. But I needed to move away from my mum's house and I have more friends in Glasgow than Edinburgh now for a few reasons (including that I did my masters at Glasgow Uni during lockdown, it was all online and it's weird now getting to meet people in person for the first time just before I graduate) by cmzraxsn (Wed 9th Nov 2022 2:45pm)

  • The system's fucking stupid. A few times when I was coming over from Edinburgh to Glasgow and not going back the same day i ended up getting a return bc it was the same price. I think I put it down somewhere and then hopefully someone can pick it up. Now i'm living in Glasgow my train to Central is £2.20 return which is cheaper than a bus but also... cheaper than the only single option offered by the machines in the station???!? Like it has off peak return for 2.20 and anytime single for 2.50, madness. Anyway one time I was in town but I had walked to the subway on the way in and wanted to go straight home so went to get an overground train. When i got to my station i put the return portion in the machine so it was sticking out, hope someone got to use it. It was like mid-evening, i don't even know if anyone would have gone into town at that time. by cmzraxsn (Sat 17th Dec 2022 5:27pm)

  • I moved over half a year ago and Glasgow just feels more...... real? Like there's actually stuff going on here that isn't aimed squarely at tourists. The other thing is Edinburgh is just too expensive to live nowadays, especially for younger folk (I'm 35, so like, the upper end of that category), and as a knock-on effect, the average age there feels like 20-30 years older than here. There's a very real sense in which I feel like I have more scope for making friends over here, though at the moment I still don't know that many people yet. Someone else mentioned, the lgbtq scene is bigger. There are other bits I won't get into but i'll mention that if you scratch the surface in edinburgh you, more often than here, find that presbyterian attitude. Anyway made the decision to move over partly because I was doing a degree at glasgow uni over lockdown, only actually went in person for the first time last year and enjoyed it. And also because I want my mum at arm's length. She's quite clingy and needy and having her an hour away is better. I was living at her house in Edinburgh since the beginning of the pandemic, and that was taking its toll. oh also music gigs. they never bother with edinburgh by cmzraxsn (Sat 28th Jan 2023 6:53pm)

  • I'm gonna google these because this all smells fishy. \#1 is raw fish, so I get why some people may not like it, but it looks nice, like a high-protein snack for indigenous folk living in Siberia. Certainly looks a lot better than a lot of the other foods on this list. \#2 looks like it was made up by those mukbang guys from Quebec, but it's just layered pizza. \#3 is considered one of the worst smelling foods in existence so ... ok I get why that's on there. \#4 is aniseed candy, like objectively nice. \#5 ... I'm not even googling that. \#6 and #7 look like they're Swedes taking potshots at Danes tbh, neither look inspiring but they also look hearty and tasty. Gule ærter is apparently a broth that looks like it could have been made here. I guess they're on the list because ... they look brown? \#8 is NI's answer to square sausage so like, objectively looks tasty. \#9 Tête de veau means calf's head so, okay I guess it can stay. That would probably cross my invisible "oh no actually maybe I should be a vegan after all" line if it was placed in front of me. \#10 well we know this one \#11 Duck blood soup, get why it's on there but i bet it tastes good. \#12 Get outta town that looks fucking delicious. Sour Thai curry \#13 Also looks yum, a coconut-based soup from Honduras. Oh Caracol means snail okay I see why people put it on there. \#14 hahaha \#15 it's a stew... okay and?? \#16 Is this only on there because it offends Italians' delicate sensibilities? It's just a sticky-looking pasta dish, it looks great. \#17 Sounds like the traditional ingredients of this noodle dish are beef brains. But all the recipes for it that I found just ask for you to boil the meat off the bone. And ... it looks nice. \#18 A Swiss curry. Sorry are we doing a list of *worst* foods? Just checking. \#19 Cookies with aniseed in them. Also looks delicious. \#20 A *very* healthy-looking stew. Top 20: 7 that I understand why they are on there, 13 that I do not. Of those 7, probably 4 that I would balk and refuse to try it. Oh who am I kidding I would try chocolate covered bacon. Just once though. So every little bit helps. If you've got first editions or anything in good condition take it to a proper vintage bookshop first, or sell it on ebay. by cmzraxsn (Sun 19th Feb 2023 3:00pm)

  • Light rail ✅ - you could even have tram-like coaches on off-road rails. would be great. Buses ✅ - not the pish we have at the moment, but a proper working system with cheap tickets, sign me the fuck up. • No mate, I said the alternatives to trams are *trains, buses, or cycling*. We should be focusing on *those* and not introducing an expensive . Trams take the worst of both the train and the bus and combine them into one horrid melange. Hell get off-road light rail and put tram carriages on it and it would be fine. But sharing the road with traffic - *including BUSES and CYCLISTS*, idgaf about cars - is a disaster. • Jónsi, him off Sigur Rós on his solo tour. Sept or Oct 2010 I didn't go to gigs when I was growing up, in Edinburgh. I think I was a bit scared of the crowds, tbh. And there just aren't many in Edinburgh. Spent most of the last decade in Tokyo and I went to a few there, but I'm kinda picky about music (not so much about genre, I just tend to get really attached and go hard for a small number of artists), and I had to wait around for my favourites to actually come to town. Moved to Glasgow six months ago and I've been to three gigs already. Turns out I actually kinda like living somewhere where bands I like are likely to tour. (One was entirely unplanned, found out the night before that an indie band I like from America were playing support, and was lucky enough to find a resell ticket) by cmzraxsn (Sun 2nd Apr 2023 11:45am)

It's calculated and charged as soon as you tap off but capped at these prices so second bus would be 2.35 instead of 2.65, and third bus is 0.40 This is different from how it works in Edinburgh or London where it's counted during the day and charged during the night. by cmzraxsn (Fri 5th May 2023 12:15pm)

Explains a lot really, like sweeteners taste different from sugar to me (the aftertaste is different, and it's a kind of "flatter" taste if that makes sense) but it's still a sweet taste - but some people notice instantly when they imbibe them. My dad used to hate them. by cmzraxsn (Mon 8th May 2023 2:02am)

  • When i moved back to the uk - right at the beginning of lockdown - my driving license and students loan were registered at my late dad's house, on the opposite side of edinburgh from my mum's house where I ended up staying. So like the day after i arrived i registered at a gp near there and just told them i was staying with my stepmom. Stayed registered there right until I moved to glasgow last year so like 2.5 years. Got a bit ridiculous towards the end tbh, picking up prescriptions was a bit of a chore. So yeah just go there. Tell them you're moving "soon" lol (The actual reason i didn't want to register near my mum's house was i have a bit of residual trauma because i was very sick at 16 and the doctor couldn't help- seeing him again kinda brings it back up. Though I heard he doesn't actually work there anymore so maybe it was pointless. Even so, my stepdad was registered at another gp near where he used to live too, because they were better than the one close by. But his was just down the road and i think he just told them he'd moved and didn't want to reregister and it was fine) by cmzraxsn (Tue 23rd May 2023 4:07pm)
  • Soft water. My dad was always very sensitive to the taste of water though, he always said it tasted better in the country and that edinburgh and glasgow had too much chlorine in the water. So even within Scotland you can grade it apparently. I don't notice this that much but I do feel fresher when I drink tap water in the highlands i guess. I used to go to uni in York which is a hard water area, I didn't realize for literally years because to me it tasted ok. Bathroom used to get dirty a lot quicker than it does here though (tbh at the time i just assumed that was because i'd moved out of my parental home and didn't realize how often i would have to do such chores in the "real world"). I also don't mind drinking london water, better than paying like £2 for bottled water, probably £3 now. So maybe I'm just weird. Other good countries in my experience for soft tap water are switzerland and japan, by the way. It's definitely something to do with mountains ⛰ French water at least in Paris is foul. by cmzraxsn (Thu 25th May 2023 3:27pm)

  • I did. I mean you will have to get to the airport to pick it up. Also check the t&c's carefully. That one I mentioned had a £200 deposit but some of the others said they had a >£1000 deposit. • You're just going to edinburgh? don't rent a car, train's not that expensive and it's reliable. You should be able to get a multi-day return, it's like £19 from queen st not sure from paisley. I thought you were going to the highlands or something Edit: "Off peak return" (NOT off peak day return) is £28.10 from paisley to waverley and u can return any time within a month. If you rented a car it would be £60 per head and then you would have to get petrol and find parking (which is very hard and expensive in edinburgh assuming you're going to a touristy area) by cmzraxsn (Mon 12th Jun 2023 9:55pm)

  • 4 adults and 2 kids you're looking at £140.50 on the train. 1/3 of the price of the rental car. Yes it makes it more complicated when you have young kids but kids love trains lol. I'd definitely say drive if you already have a car, but renting a 7-seater is pricey. Renting an ordinary size car would be an option if you were a group of 5, those were a lot cheaper. by cmzraxsn (Mon 12th Jun 2023 10:15pm)
  • we used to drive over from edinburgh when i was a kid lol by cmzraxsn (Tue 13th Jun 2023 2:55am)
  • Fucking mental the whole thing. I stay on the same line as the queens park station and it's less than the price of a single bus ticket (£2.85 now??) to get a return train ticket to town. So i feel like i'm fucking splashing out whenever i get a bus. also the queen's park line has off peak return and anytime single, but no off peak single or anytime return. and there is no multi-day return so when i'm visiting family in edinburgh i can't get a multi-day return the whole way. i end up buying extra return tickets to get into town to get to queen st to then get a multi-day return. so i have two wasted legs of the journey and that's still the *cheapest* way to go. by cmzraxsn (Tue 13th Jun 2023 11:48am)

Last year I did a mixture of train and car, was around the same time and price, little bit longer by train because I had to wait for connections and take a bus when I got back to Edinburgh. But I was going to the uni once a week, and parking far away so it was free. And I was going at off-peak hours. At rush hour you will get stuck in traffic, and then you'll have extortionate parking fees if you're even able to park, meanwhile the train is more expensive at peak hours than I was paying but it's fairly reliable. Bus would also get stuck in traffic, I can't imagine it being reliable. by cmzraxsn (Tue 18th Jul 2023 2:58am)

  • \+ if the black box on the pole by the door isn't working tap it on the one by the driver. I think they have to manually activate it sometimes so just say so to them. if you have done it correctly, within glasgow it's 2.85 for a single, second bus you take will be 2.15, third bus will be 0.40 (so 5.00 return, 5.40 day ticket). If you need a receipt I honestly think you're better off paying for the 5.40 day ticket with cash - there is a way to request a receipt online but it's a bit of a faff. In London and Edinburgh there is a similar system but you don't "tap off", only "tap on" (because it's a flat fare unlike Glasgow which goes up from i think 1.85 for a very short journey to 2.85 for a standard single, so that First can put on their website "fares from 1.85" - also i think if you're taking buses out to hamilton or dumbarton etc there are higher fares). Insert your own weather joke here. by cmzraxsn (Wed 26th Jul 2023 12:53am)
  • I did that (the opposite way) for uni once a week last year and I did car and train. But bus will be cheaper. Just... would strongly recommend moving closer if the job is worth it. That commute isn't something I'd want to do every day. Edinburgh's super expensive which is why i eventually moved over here, but you could move somewhere in between - Livingston, Linlithgow, Falkirk, etc, or to Mid/East Lothian, and it wouldbe more affordable. Seen also people parking too close to the junction with Victoria road which stopped buses being able to turn. Just stupidity tbh by cmzraxsn (Tue 15th Aug 2023 3:59pm)

  • There is an express train between Edinburgh Waverley and Glasgow Queen St that leaves either station at :00, :15, :30, and :45 past the hour. (Might be only :15 and :45 in the winter, not sure but it changes now and then.) That takes about 50 minutes. It's fine to do but you wouldn't be able to go out to bars in Glasgow if you are staying in Edinburgh or vice versa, you would have to come back around 10 or 11 pm I think. It's something like £14.50 for an off peak day return and £20 for an off peak open return so you would save a bit of money coming over and staying in a hotel, then going back, than you would if you took multiple journeys. Your way wouldn't require you to take all your luggage with you, though. There are some upsides. Also might I interest you in going somewhere that's not the city? if you like the seaside, North Berwick or Dunbar are a short train ride from Edinburgh. If you like mountains we've plenty of those, too (Pentlands, near Edinburgh, are the closest hills). Loch Lomond is very close to Glasgow. Etc. by cmzraxsn (Fri 25th Aug 2023 2:20pm)

  • should do. if the reader behind the driver is broken you just use the one that you tapped on with. there's just a danger that if your bus ends up in the suburbs you would be charged another fare. like one of the buses i can take to get home ends up in east Kilbride which i think is a third fare level so if i missed tapping off i would be charged the maximum. so maybe that's the case for the bus you were on, only two fare levels, but i wouldn't trust it to be true for all buses. by cmzraxsn (Sun 3rd Sep 2023 11:42am)

Under strain but not as badly as Edinburgh. Entertainment definitely better imo though depends what you're into. Safety... well I've not been beaten up yet. :p I honestly think it's a bit of a difficult one to answer, Glasgow still has that reputation of being unsafe, especially if you go to certain areas, but it's nowhere near as unsafe as it was, say, 10 years ago. And in Edinburgh there's this bubbling resentment under wraps that you can sometimes feel from people. I don't get that here, it's more obvious if someone is spoiling for a fight and you just avoid them. • Ben Lomond is behind the Kilpatrick hills from Glasgow. According to a link someone else posted in this thread you can actually see Ben Lomond *over* the Kilpatrick hills from Clarkston, and it's not that one because you can see the Kilpatricks start on the left of the picture. it's definitely Ben More, i even took a pic from Queens Park with peakfinder on my old phone to prove it and posted it here but i don't think anyone noticed. by cmzraxsn (Thu 28th Sep 2023 9:24am)
  • Lol i just like being vindicated. It's like a collective myth in Glasgow that you can see Ben Lomond, and it's so pervasive that the Queens Park viewfinder plaque mislabels Ben More too. • Of those three, Oban. Fort William to Mallaig is a more scenic route than that but you'll struggle to fit it all in one day, I think - it's about 5 hours one way. So I would prefer Oban as a town you can visit and see in a few hours then come back, rather than getting all the way up to Mallaig and having to come straight back. (The town is too small to be interesting, anyway, so you'd want to stop off at FW or Glenfinnan, but again you'd not have enough time.) Inverness is nice but not that special imo? like the centre just feels like a miniature version of Glasgow or Edinburgh? if you're going up there you would really want to go there properly, use it as a base and head out to places like Loch Ness and Culloden by bus or car. Dundee, I visited as a kid but i don't remember well. 🤷 by cmzraxsn (Wed 4th Oct 2023 2:34am)
  • I would head to the hills if i had a car. Or a museum is a good shout. Except right now I've got a sore foot and can hardly walk so I'm just lying in bed most of the day. lol by cmzraxsn (Wed 11th Oct 2023 4:17am)
  • I've been too hot even in this relatively mild summer so I'm kinda looking forward to being able to walk around without sweating through every layer of clothing. That's a lie, i think it's a side-effect of some meds I'm taking that my body becomes crap at heat regulation. Idk the only thing for winter blues that I've found helps is going for a walk in the daytime. and I recognize that I'm privileged enough to be able to do this as a freelancer working from home. Do some basking on your lunch break, I guess. • yes it does require planning. anyway i say do it, whether it's tomorrow or in two years time. i should also mention the queer community is much bigger and much easier to find. i don't think you'll have trouble finding other gay sci fi nerds (🙋). tied into that, there *are* a lot of students here too but you'll meet more people who are just living here in their 20s and 30s. and yeah others have mentioned there's more hills and country parks nearby, some of which are accessible by public transport, or loch Lomond is nearby. And there's just more to do on the "low" cultural level like going to gigs/concerts. I guess there's more "high" culture (ballet, opera...) in Edinburgh?? idk. And obviously there's the Festival in Edinburgh but it's much nicer to be a visitor in that season and go to a bunch of shows, than it is to live there during it. by cmzraxsn (Thu 19th Oct 2023 12:38pm)

(only know that cus they still have a vax centre at the mosque) by cmzraxsn (Thu 19th Oct 2023 2:13pm)
  • pretty tolerant i'd say. not all places super "friendly" but you'll get grief for other shit before you get grief for being gay. like i won't go around flying rainbow flags most of the time - that said when i was carrying an almost-rainbow (it has a white stripe, it's not a real rainbow) tote bag from flying tiger a homeless guy started chanting "L! G! B! T! ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|thumbs_up)" at me and that's really the only (positive or negative) reaction i've had. also gay scene is fairly big, there's the effect of people from small towns moving to the big city that you get in London and Manchester too. by cmzraxsn (Thu 19th Oct 2023 10:30pm)

Anyway the folk in the other thread said it's used in Dumfries. (I just find it weird not to hear it living in Glasgow tbh) (Btw is your mapchart glitching? the coloured regions seem to be a few pixels off) by cmzraxsn (Thu 2nd Nov 2023 10:17pm)
  • Pedestrianize Pollokshaws road, a major thoroughfare, and where will all the cars and buses go? Do it to the whole city centre, aye, but doing it there would mean diverting all traffic onto another street, probably one not designed for it. Or do we want to knock a bunch of houses down to make a new southbound road? also fuck cobblestones. idk why your "Dutch" ai is suggesting it when cities there all have red brick paving slabs in the centre. (obviously the other point to make is that cycling isn't as popular here as there simply because Glasgow city centre is one big hill, something they don't have in the Netherlands) by cmzraxsn (Sat 4th Nov 2023 12:30pm)

  • Hehe well you've got plenty of time. 😆 I say don't worry too much, you'll be able to make plenty of friends on your course. Try to join some student societies or Facebook / meetup dot com groups related to your interests. Glasgow's a big city and you'll find plenty of people that like rock climbing and outdoors stuff. You definitely don't have to like going out, but a lot of students will and it can be a way to make friends. But stand your ground if you get peer-pressured too much. Also if you like music at all there are always gigs happening. by cmzraxsn (Sat 4th Nov 2023 6:44pm)
  • oh and tip number 1 for independent living is learn how to cook 😆 even if it's simple meals like pasta. try and get maybe two meals that you can do *well* and like, a baseline of other stuff that you know how to do in a basic sense. that's the one thing that if i had a do-over of my life i would make more effort to learn as a teenager before i left home. tip number 2 is staying clean and tidy, both in a personal hygiene and a mess sense. at double your age i still have trouble keeping my room tidy, for my shame. tip number 3 is get registered at a gp. prescriptions are free in scotland so take advantage of that if you ever need it. anything else should hopefully just fall into place. by cmzraxsn (Sat 4th Nov 2023 6:53pm)
  • You're probably fine then. Take the opportunity to learn new skills, anyway. 😜 Many students just stay registered at their "home" gp but as i say, the reason i would recommend otherwise is just so you can get free prescriptions. If it didn't occur to you, you probably have a clean bill of health so it's not urgent at least. But I grew up with asthma and a couple other things happened to me when i was a teenager so it's always been one of the first things I do when I move now. • go and look. i find it ok but I'm a guy with resting cunt face and look stronger than i actually am so people don't bother me anyway. i don't know how it is for young women but I do see a lot of young women about so it can't be that bad. there are some streets that are horribly dirty like Alison st, Calder st is fine though. worst I've had was junkies cooking up in my close, which, tbf, is pretty bad. not seen smashed cars, seen a lot of fucking terrible parking though. by cmzraxsn (Wed 8th Nov 2023 1:33pm)
  • Roma or Romany, not Romanian. i mean if you're going to be racist at least get it right. there is a family of Romanians and a family of Roma in my close and they *hate* each other. by cmzraxsn (Wed 8th Nov 2023 9:18pm)

  • It's a disgusting smell and you should be trying not to expose others to it. I don't give a shit if it's "legal" (since when is that even a thing anyway) by cmzraxsn (Sun 12th Nov 2023 6:13pm)

  • best friend lives there and it's like, a pretty nice area. I looked at a flat there too, the flat wasn't right though. Carntyne north of the station on the other hand, that was like driving through a warzone. by cmzraxsn (Fri 24th Nov 2023 9:21am)
  • I believe it. Nah Carntyne seemed ok but we passed a police cordon of some description around somebody's house so our minds came up wi all sorts imagining why. by cmzraxsn (Wed 29th Nov 2023 12:21pm)
  • Walk means stroll or hike? if the former, * Balloch country park by loch Lomond, ending with the pub there. i went there today it's lovely. you can access this easily by public transport from Partick. * Pollok Park - see the highland coos, walk around the old stately home, finish with the tea room in the Burrell Collection gallery. Then while you're in the southside there's plenty of restaurants and bars in Shawlands nearby. * Chatelherault - bit further out in Hamilton but there's a market on Sundays and there's a very dramatic looking valley and some gorgeous old oak trees. There are some more strenuous walks you can do here and a really long one that takes 2.5 hours. * Kelvin river walkway. I think those are the main ones. My mum when she comes over here always drives me out somewhere to go for a walk so I've gotten to know the country parks around Glasgow fairly well. Got a few more possibilities if those don't cut it. If they like hiking rather than walking, there are plenty of mountains close by. Might recommend Dumgoyne as a fairly easy but also quite steep hill to try. by cmzraxsn (Sun 3rd Dec 2023 6:50pm)
  • Balloch House, right by the loch and the park by cmzraxsn (Mon 4th Dec 2023 12:47pm)
  • nice. some look very timeless, and there's a couple where i forgot what i was looking at and thought it was new York by cmzraxsn (Fri 8th Dec 2023 12:49pm)
  • I'll say when i was thinking of moving here that was a huge plus point for Glasgow over Edinburgh. Unironically. There's a fully separated track going along Sauchiehall st and another going from town to Queens park. They still need to be joined up to a bigger network but that stuff is as you say, in the planning. And it's simply miles better than whatever the fuck CEC have done with Leith Walk (and that happened after i moved). by cmzraxsn (Sun 10th Dec 2023 2:46am)
  • from Rutherglen it's exactly the same direction to there as it is to Stepps. Are you sure you're not mixing your directions up? The places you named are more north than east from Rutherglen. Is that Celtic Park in the foreground of your picture? by cmzraxsn (Mon 11th Dec 2023 9:52pm)
