  • No I don't feel comfortable doing that at all, which is why I've posted here for advice on what to do, if anything. As I said I'm not an expert in dog behaviour, have never had a dog, just wondering what the possible reasons for the crying are, and if there's anything I should/ could do. I think the note through the door would probably be the best idea, as they might not realise it's getting distressed when they're out. by Mombi87 (Sun 16th Jun 2019 2:29pm)

  • I’ve had bad experiences of trying to sort things with neighbours before- one man in particular threatened to set his dog on me and hurled racist abuse at me after I asked him not to put fag butts in the communal areas. Where I live there’s not the best community spirit unfortunately. by Mombi87 (Sun 16th Jun 2019 5:00pm)

  • Would be worth speaking to some existing small brands/orgs in Glasgow to get some advice and info, they’ll know folks in that area that might be able to help, or may want to collaborate themselves. Check out on Instagram- Fashion foundry, Spot Design Market, What Lydia Made, All That is Braw, Solace Sleepwear, Love and Squalor. Also Local Heroes are design curators based in Edinburgh and have a lot of knowledge about local makers, technicians and designers, they might have some useful info. All the best! Let us know when you launch so we can give you a follow. by Mombi87 (Wed 22nd Apr 2020 11:41am)

  • Eating disorders are serious mental illnesses that have high fatality rates, and if by “punish them” you mean, have a very detrimental affect on their recovery from that illness, you’d be absolutely right, it’s extremely dangerous. What about just...judging it on the price, or asking the waiting staff what the portion size is. If you don’t want it all, don’t eat it all. by Mombi87 (Wed 19th Aug 2020 11:01pm)
  • I’ve searched already and I’ve only found a few posts, you can’t expect all the answers to be in old posts, when new people join all the time, and existing members have new experiences? by Mombi87 (Thu 20th Aug 2020 2:17pm)
  • Fair dos pal, didn’t realise there was a time restriction on these things. Whatever you have to do πŸ‘ by Mombi87 (Thu 20th Aug 2020 2:41pm)
  • Very much this! It’s a balance of nutrition and health factors, as well as the social benefits of eating with others and sharing food. Obsessing over a calorie counting app (which is what you have to do if you’re actually calorie counting, theres a lot of time and energy involved in that process) strips all of that away and turns food, and our ever changing body shapes, into a threat that has to be controlled. by Mombi87 (Thu 20th Aug 2020 2:40pm)
  • Ah brilliant...so not a fixable problem then you reckon? by Mombi87 (Thu 8th Oct 2020 12:04am)
  • I didn’t test whether or not the glitching alters when I open/close the screen, I’ll try that next time, thank you. The screen in the photo above doesn’t show up when I take a screenshot, and my computer shuts down and restarts immediately after this (2 x now), all started after a Catalina update, no idea why. Do you know a good place in Glasgow I could take it to get looked at? I’m fine with light laptop maintenance but this is a bit out of my comfort zone! by Mombi87 (Thu 8th Oct 2020 12:14am)
  • Thanks! by Mombi87 (Thu 8th Oct 2020 1:23am)
  • Thanks for the googling! I’ve been to simplyfixit before and they did not, unfortunately...! I did the PRAM/SMC resets last week and then this glitching started, its very strange altogether. I will continue on my hunt for a solution, cheers again by Mombi87 (Thu 8th Oct 2020 1:22am)

  • Data all backed up aye. Any reason why it's so difficult to find an independent apple specialist that will fix something like this? by Mombi87 (Thu 8th Oct 2020 1:39pm)
  • Thanks for the info! Have taken it to Alias Computing and it seems to be in good hands. This is all way behind my expertise! Not a great time to need to drop a few grand on a new laptop, fingers crossed I can get it fixed by Mombi87 (Fri 9th Oct 2020 8:42pm)
  • Thanks for the recommendation, Alan fixed it and has given great service by Mombi87 (Wed 21st Oct 2020 6:32pm)
  • Thanks so much, that’s all very good to know. Did they show you before and after images of removals? I guess I’m worried that it might not fully go away (though it is basically just some very fine black lines, not huge block areas, so probably not as difficult as it could be) and can’t find any places that show that stuff on their websites. by Mombi87 (Wed 21st Oct 2020 7:22pm)
  • Thank you! It’s much appreciated :) by Mombi87 (Thu 22nd Oct 2020 4:37pm)
  • I know an email's likely to do fuck all, that's why i'm on here asking for people's thoughts on it. I'm not just going to sit back and let this disruption continue without at least tryin to explore my options, it's absolutely shite hearing a kid probably in distress, it's also shite getting bad sleep for a week. there's no clear cut solution. by Mombi87 (Fri 30th Jul 2021 5:57pm)
  • i'm in a tenement aye. Have lived in very noisy closes before and I'm used to general neighbour noise, late night parties, loud music etc but this is extreme and constant. I can see there not being a lot of practical solutions to this, but thanks for sharing your experience by Mombi87 (Fri 30th Jul 2021 6:07pm)
  • Good on you, i'll be doing the same myself as soon as I can afford to, think I'm done with tenements! by Mombi87 (Fri 30th Jul 2021 6:12pm)
  • I own my flat and they own theirs upstairs too. We have a factor but they're not a housing association (Miller Property Management) so not sure how much power they have to deal with something like this. I imagine they'd refer us on to the council services. by Mombi87 (Fri 30th Jul 2021 6:11pm)
  • cheers for the advice. Upstairs own their own flat so there's no landlord to speak to, it might be a good shout to see if other flats in the building are affected though, see what they think. I know it's a very difficult situation as it involves a child but as you say it's hard to just sit back and ignore it when it's so disruptive by Mombi87 (Fri 30th Jul 2021 6:16pm)
  • thanks that's helpful, i'll give it a go. Taking her out during the day seems to be a sensible idea, I will very gently suggest.. by Mombi87 (Fri 30th Jul 2021 6:21pm)
  • thanks, yeah that is always at the forefront of my mind, I would never disregard their experience in this. I'm sure if there was an easy fix they would have tried that already. Just a difficult one as it is having a big impact on quite fundamental parts of life right now by Mombi87 (Fri 30th Jul 2021 6:52pm)
  • DELETED Mate these are not alt bars πŸ˜‚these are mainstream rock pubs for beardy guys in their 40s who work in offices...alt bars are more like Old Hairdressers, Flying Duck, Mono, CCA, the 78, Banana Moon, Glasgow Autonomous Space..etc by Mombi87 (Sat 16th Oct 2021 7:43pm)
  • The city of glasgow chorus is accepting new members and are doing some interesting things at the moment, I joined them for one rehearsal but unfortunately ended up not having time for it with work. But would recommend! by Mombi87 (Sat 16th Oct 2021 8:03pm)
  • There’s photos going round social media of needle holes on women’s backs after they felt really ill/ blacked out, specifically in nice and sleazies and firewater. It isn’t an isolated incident of one person getting too drunk. by Mombi87 (Sun 17th Oct 2021 1:38pm)
  • A lot of the spiking is being done by needles, it’s nothing to do with drinks. How about you don’t victim blame and call out the freaks (men) who are going round injecting women on nights out? by Mombi87 (Sun 17th Oct 2021 1:42pm)
  • We used Lift & Shift after multiple attempts to have some very straightforward items removed by GCC bulk uplift before they started charging recently. Save yourself the hassle and the stress, unfortunately the council are at it by Mombi87 (Sun 17th Oct 2021 1:59pm)
  • I’m not on Facebook, it’s a cesspit. As much as you would hate to think a woman had critical thinking skills, I’m afraid I can make sound judgements on what is shared and by whom. I’ve also been spiked twice myself and nobody believed me, because rape culture. by Mombi87 (Sun 17th Oct 2021 1:55pm)
  • Still swearing at me even though you know now, that’s reassuring. All the best to the women in your life. by Mombi87 (Sun 17th Oct 2021 3:06pm)
  • You’re not too old for anything, there’s all ages of people trying new things all the time, for whatever reason. I’ve got pals in their 40s doing college courses, I’m 34 and just had a massive change to my work life that I never thought would be possible at this age. Have a think about what you’re interested in, or what matters to you, and that should point you in the right direction. Do you just want money and that’s it? Do you want to help people / work with your hands/ work from home/ be out and about? Don’t be worrying about what your life looks like from the outside while you figure this stuff out, it’s nobody else’s business. At the end of the day you’re still young and have at least 30 years of work ahead of you, which is plenty of time to do interesting things that you enjoy and can make money from! Good luck. by Mombi87 (Sun 24th Oct 2021 2:38am)
  • You should check out University of Glasgow Culture (UofGCulture on Twitter) they have loads of events, talks, etc and more will be in person soon, maybe a good way to meet people by Mombi87 (Sun 24th Oct 2021 12:56pm)

  • vintage shops are great for these - Mr Bens in Trongate, or if you're over west end way the one across from Co-op on Great Western Road, or head down Ruthven Lane. by Mombi87 (Tue 16th Nov 2021 4:42pm)
  • Unfortunately this is true, the people who have made Glasgow such an attractive city to live in, the very reason people are moving up here from England (and particularly London), are being priced out the place. I’m pro immigration but this particular situation stings. by Mombi87 (Wed 17th Nov 2021 5:50pm)
  • It’s a difficult thing to bring up openly as it comes across as unwelcoming, and it doesn’t get talked about enough as a result. It is having a huge impact on local people now, and it can’t be ignored. I appreciate OP wants to live in a great city (don’t blame them) but it seems like there’s no thought for being part of the wider issue. An English friend recently told me that “barras market would be so much better if there weren’t any junkies”- says it all really. by Mombi87 (Wed 17th Nov 2021 6:21pm)
  • I’m the same as you, I like the balance. She’s suggesting totally wiping the place out of Glaswegian working class people, who again, made the place what it is in the first instance by Mombi87 (Wed 17th Nov 2021 7:41pm)
  • I’ve already said I’m pro immigration, and myself and others have agreed this is not an immigration issue- its about cost of living and wage disparity around the UK, and the property market. Throw in new remote working practices and you have yourself a complex situation. I can’t see the information you’re looking at but I have witnessed many people’s lived experience of the property market over the last 2 years, including my own, and I am speaking about these experiences specifically. by Mombi87 (Wed 17th Nov 2021 7:49pm)
  • Sorry if that’s what came across from my comment, it wasn’t my intention. This person is upper middle class, and when she used the word junkies I read into it that way, as most people in the barras aren’t actual junkies. I hate that word so much, going to stop saying it now! by Mombi87 (Wed 17th Nov 2021 11:51pm)
  • Hyndland motor company out in East Kilbride (confusingly) is brilliant, Michael is very honest and has very reasonable prices. Best buying experience we’ve had, he doesn’t mess you about or try to oversell like other dealers. by Mombi87 (Thu 18th Nov 2021 3:03pm)
  • I would check out indie shops - Wild Gorse Pottery (don't just sell pottery), Hell Yeah, Stephen Smith, and the wee shops down the Cooperage lane off Pollokshaws. Not southside but can also very much recommend Welcome Home, Estd. at Barras Market and Spot Design Market for nice stuff made locally by artists/ makers for christmas :) by Mombi87 (Fri 19th Nov 2021 1:22pm)
  • Grey Wolf Artists studios are having a pop up christmas shop with loads of guest artists/ designers, happening over the next few weekends, you'll get everything you need there I'm sure! Info is in the facebook banner in the link. Also - Welcome Home in the CCA, Good Press artist bookshop, Outwith Books just off Victoria Road, Wild gorse pottery Pollokshaws Road, Woom Room in the Barras [https://www.facebook.com/events/1082087579279838/?acontext=%7B%22ref%22%3A%2252%22%2C%22action\_history%22%3A%22\[%7B%5C%22surface%5C%22%3A%5C%22share\_link%5C%22%2C%5C%22mechanism%5C%22%3A%5C%22share\_link%5C%22%2C%5C%22extra\_data%5C%22%3A%7B%5C%22invite\_link\_id%5C%22%3A904587193507373%7D%7D\]%22%7D](https://www.facebook.com/events/1082087579279838/?acontext=%7B%22ref%22%3A%2252%22%2C%22action_history%22%3A%22[%7B%5C%22surface%5C%22%3A%5C%22share_link%5C%22%2C%5C%22mechanism%5C%22%3A%5C%22share_link%5C%22%2C%5C%22extra_data%5C%22%3A%7B%5C%22invite_link_id%5C%22%3A904587193507373%7D%7D]%22%7D) by Mombi87 (Tue 23rd Nov 2021 1:17pm)
  • Which one are you with if you don’t mind me asking? by Mombi87 (Tue 23rd Nov 2021 5:38pm)
  • Similar to mine. The GPs are great obvs when I do get to speak to one, the way the service is run up to that point is shocking though. Took me ages to finally get on to the online booking cuz I couldn’t figure out the website, and I’m a computer literate person. Can’t imagine what it’s like for someone who’s older or has language barriers etc. by Mombi87 (Tue 23rd Nov 2021 6:06pm)
  • This happened me with my *annual* checkup with the specialist at the hospital for a long term health condition- they called early, I missed it, went through a whole rigmarole and the scolding/ “you’re being a nuisance” tone to reschedule...stress that this is a phone appointment for what is usually a physical checkup- checking abdomen, taking blood pressure, etc...it’s just not adequate by Mombi87 (Tue 23rd Nov 2021 10:29pm)
  • I know, the whole thing needs redesigned from scratch. Its been added to and amended and adapted in a piecemeal way and the result is a service that doesn’t work for anyone. Even listening to the automated messages on the phones- they’re bizarre and go round in circles. by Mombi87 (Tue 23rd Nov 2021 11:19pm)
  • This was the only practice in my postcode that had space for me when I moved to the area, wish I could move! by Mombi87 (Tue 23rd Nov 2021 11:16pm)

  • Drink more water? That’s horrendous, I’m so sorry. I hope everything is ok!! by Mombi87 (Tue 23rd Nov 2021 11:27pm)
  • I think it’s because of the nature of the service you are being given- people take their health much more seriously than a house utility, and a docs appointment is often urgent, surrounded by worry and stress, and other potential emotional issues. You speak to a doctor when something is wrong, maybe preparing for having sensitive conversations about private stuff...etc etc. Hence why the timing is an issue if that is an added difficulty or uncertainty on top of everything else. You need answers, not missed calls. by Mombi87 (Tue 23rd Nov 2021 11:25pm)
  • DELETED 66 Hair and Style on Nithsdale Road, Craig Rowan in there does great men’s long hair cuts, and you don’t have to book 6 months in advance/ join a waiting list/ be on Instagram 16 hours a day to get a cancellation πŸ˜‚ by Mombi87 (Sat 27th Nov 2021 1:30pm)

  • Train. Traffic and parking is horrendous round there by Mombi87 (Thu 2nd Dec 2021 7:43pm)
  • Unfortunately the council noise team are just a complaint logging service at the moment, they used covid as an excuse to stop call outs and they haven’t started them again. The woman on the phone told me “I can certainly make a record of this complaint but there’s nothing we can do about it at the moment”. This was about 2 months ago. Fingers crossed it has changed since but knowing GCC I have my severe doubts. by Mombi87 (Sun 12th Dec 2021 12:38pm)

  • DELETED Because...of...the...tendency of rangers fans to be right wing and therefore not to believe in the existence of a society in which they play a role and have responsibilities? And an extension of that- in the extremes, to be right wing conspiracy theorists? by Mombi87 (Sat 18th Dec 2021 7:00pm)
  • DELETED Lool I said its a tendency, not a rule. And we might not be America but certain factions of our society are borrowing their politics and attaching it on to anything they disagree with- masks, vaccines, climate action, etc etc etc. You can’t deny more of that has come over here from America over the last 2 years by Mombi87 (Sat 18th Dec 2021 7:28pm)

  • To be honest I don’t see much difference between men’s and women’s jewellery a lot of the time- just go to the women’s jewellery section of any of the big high street shops- H&M, Zara, Primark- and pick out what you like. Primark especially has loads to choose from and you can try things out at a low price if you’re experimenting. by Mombi87 (Sat 18th Dec 2021 10:36pm)

  • What about own brand oats from Asda or Lidl? Usually about 50p or thereabouts for a big bag, would do a few weeks of porridge breakfasts? Lidl has cheap dried fruit and nuts that go a long way energy/calorie wise, get some of those on top, should keep you going till lunch time in the winter. by Mombi87 (Tue 21st Dec 2021 5:24pm)
  • Was meant to be going home tomorrow, currently in isolation after testing positive last week. It sucks but have decided to postpone and have family “Christmas” (present swapping, a dinner) in the new year sometime. Lots of people in the same situation, you’re not alone. The main thing is that you have enough food and medicine and you’re comfortable. Do what you need to do, watch some films, light a few candles. Is there anyone who can drop round some bits for you? Deliveroo do some supermarkets, if you’re having difficulty getting a slot. Just know you’re not alone, and look after yourself! 111 is very good for medical help if you’re worried about any symptoms out of GP hours by Mombi87 (Tue 21st Dec 2021 6:05pm)

  • Caveat this with- I’m not sure what’s happening at the moment with some of these places with restrictions etc but off the top of my head: - Drawing Life Glasgow do in person and online life drawing and portraiture classes, they’re really good - Art Space G41 in Shawlands Arcade do loads of art and craft workshops, I see they’ve got new ones planned for 2022, pottery, sewing, bookmaking etc - Jangling Space are a stained glass workshop also in Shawlands Arcade that do classes - the Deep End Govanhill Baths Community Trust just off Nithsdale street have a pottery club and workshops you can join - Studio Pavilion at House for an Art Lover have a regular workshop programme for adults and/or kids, a bit more expensive - and finally- sign up for alerts on Eventbrite for art stuff in your area, loads of workshops and classes are done through that and you’ll find out about one off events that aren’t part of a wider programme. Enjoy! by Mombi87 (Sun 26th Dec 2021 9:44pm)

  • Sorry you’re having such a difficult time, I really feel for you. Can you afford private therapy? About £50 a session, as often as you can manage it- every 2 weeks, say? There’s charities that do it for reduced rates too. That would be a quicker route to long term help, and you could get antidepressants from the GP in the meantime to settle your head and help you feel safe as soon as possible. My experience with trying to access NHS therapy was a struggle, which is why I’m recommending that, but obviously you could get lucky with your own GP and they’ll be the best person to chat to to let you know waiting times etc at the moment. I know it’s a privileged thing to be able to access private therapy, but I think it’s worth it. Unfortunately as well, and I absolutely hate to say it, mental health stuff on NHS medical records, especially any record of suicidal thoughts/ plans, costs the individual greatly in the long term when it comes to health or life insurance. Please keep trying, it will get easier, you won’t always feel like this. by Mombi87 (Thu 6th Jan 2022 2:15pm)

It might enable you to connect to local psychiatry quickly after signing up, and with the monthly payments it might end up a better price than paying for a one off appointment/ diagnosis. Sorry if this is inaccurate though, just an idea. by Mombi87 (Tue 11th Jan 2022 5:28pm)

  • Speak to a few different letting agencies, ask them if they have any properties in the places you’re considering, ask about demand. You wouldn’t need to pay, they want your business, and they’ll want to help you by answering your questions. Also look online at rental properties/prices in the areas you’re thinking about. You might think a place is meh but loads of people won’t, and will happily live there for work, schools, family, whatever. Different strokes. by Mombi87 (Thu 13th Jan 2022 4:22pm)

  • DELETED I took a refresher lesson after not driving for about 9 years after getting my license and it was useless. The guy took me to an industrial estate and just did all the basic intro stuff, which I was fine with anyway. I wanted him to take me out on to roads to build confidence, but he said it would take 4 or 5 lessons to get to that. I saved myself the money and just did it myself. To be fair it was nerve wrecking but after a few runs on the m8 I was fine. Take your time, build it up slowly from quiet roads to motorways, and get P plates if you need for other drivers. Best of luck! by Mombi87 (Sat 15th Jan 2022 5:03pm)

  • DELETED Curious why you want to avoid tourist traps as a newcomer yourself- a lot of things that would be classed as “touristy” are actually great introductions to the city and its rich history, culture and personality- eg Barras Market, Kelvingrove Museum, glasgow cathedral - places I visited when I first arrived as a student that I still love today. I think instead of approaching the city as a check list of places to avoid and places that are cool, come and get stuck into all of it for yourself, the good the bad and the ugly, and you will have a brilliant, authentic experience of being a student here. I promise, have done it myself! by Mombi87 (Sat 15th Jan 2022 9:57pm)
  • I guess ending up in weird or unexpected places is part of what makes your uni experience, and those are the funny or memorable things you end up telling stories about years later, you know? I went to GSA so a bit of a different experience from glasgow uni, a much smaller student population. Totally loved it here from the minute I arrived- lived in the west end but spent a lot of time in town as well due to art school being there. Both areas have loads to offer in terms of the arts, cheap eats, nice bars etc. Most gigs will be in town if you’re looking for live music, and there’s plenty of it. • I’m supposed to be working so can’t write as long a reply as I’d like but just to say- i agree that the “support group/ go for a walk” chat that’s rolled out by these helplines and websites is largely useless. Emotional support and listening can be helpful if you need that and you’ve not got it in your life but it’s not a long term solution, and no substitute for proper therapy, which I wish these charities would also provide with their millions. If you like the sound of Men’s Shed you might also like Gal Gael, they’re a very welcoming group of people who do woodworking workshops and social meet ups in their space in Ibrox. I’d encourage you to get in touch or go along one evening, it really is special. As far as other places go where you can meet people in a relaxed environment and get involved- - Milk Cafe on Victoria road have loads of community workshops and classes and are brilliant - Jangling Space is a community art co op in shawlands where you can do stained glass making in a group space - Young Friends of the Earth Scotland are a climate activist group that have lots of training and meet up opportunities - Plant Grow Share deliver locally grown veg to food banks and community groups and are sometimes looking for volunteers - glasgow food not bombs is an activist group that provides food to homeless people and folks in need around the city If I think of anything else I’ll post it later! I went to so many consultations and wasn’t convinced by any of them. Ended up doing loads of research and asking the doctor for prescriptions while putting together my own simple skincare routines. If you’re looking for surfacing stuff like peels etc I would really recommend La Belle Forme- lovely staff, very professional and provide effective treatments. But for hormonal acne your best bet is speaking to your GP for something like a contraceptive pill or Spironolactone. • It doesn't sound like you'll have much trouble getting a nice flat to rent, if you're an accountant you'll be able to afford market rates and will come across as trustworthy to a landlord (I don't agree with that system but that's how it is unfortunately). The nicest areas are the west end (and it has great links to the city centre by tube anywhere around Partick, Kelvinhall, Hillhead, Kelvinbridge, and st George's Cross stations) or Southside - anywhere around Pollokshields, Queens Park, or Shawlands you should be grand and there's regular buses and trains into town. Don't think you need to go as far as Paisley or Stirling, unless you're wanting to save cash on rent. by Mombi87 (Sat 12th Mar 2022 12:34pm)

  • This. If she has bad acne she’s entitled to ask for a referral. Tell her to be persistent and not take no for an answer- say it’s affecting her mental health, they can’t argue with that. If it’s bad acne she needs prescription meds, and a private derm will just be charging her for the same thing she’d be getting for free on NHS. Independent skincare places like Skin by Zoe do great facials etc but they’re not qualified to deal with medical conditions. by Mombi87 (Tue 22nd Mar 2022 10:35am)

  • Oh god, it’s a whole saga. COLAB were actually asset managers brought in by the savoy centre owners as part of a “regeneration project” - aka gentrification of the savoy centre, with the intention of slowly kicking out established tenants. They set up the art/design community initiative as a way to make this process look more palatable to the general public- bring in artists, give them low cost spaces, get some cool stuff going on, and slowly kick out existing shops while nobody is looking. One of the new artist residents talked about it a lot on their Instagram- the whole experience of dealing with COLAB, how they started speaking to existing tenants and hearing how badly they were being treated, writing letters of complaint, etc. They’ve outlined it in their stories, it’s well worth a read https://www.instagram.com/s/aGlnaGxpZ2h0OjE3OTUwMzQzNzQzMjg2ODY1?story_media_id=2061682417044117946&utm_medium=copy_link by Mombi87 (Wed 23rd Mar 2022 12:39pm)
  • is that because a lot of the time it actually is gentrification though? Feels like a text book case with the Savoy - "gentrification: the process whereby the character of a poor urban area is changed by wealthier people moving in, improving housing, and attracting new businesses, often displacing current inhabitants in the process" by Mombi87 (Wed 23rd Mar 2022 8:16pm)

  • I never said they spoil it, or that they weren’t allowed to live anywhere. Just talking about process of gentrification. If anything I’m part of the problem, which I don’t have an answer for. Savoy centre would be amazing as a mix of old and new, like the Barras, but the owners are trying to push the old out, which I, and a lot of other folk, have an issue with. I guess that’s the answer- old and new coexist. by Mombi87 (Wed 23rd Mar 2022 10:01pm)

  • Yeah have tried these things many a time but alcohol always ends up being involved somehow, whether it’s during the activity or straight after - basically the message I’m getting is, if it doesn’t involve drink they’re going to be bored. My mum pals are brilliant for booze free company but obviously they’re a bit harder to get hold of, understandably! will just have to wait about 10 yearsπŸ˜‚ by Mombi87 (Sun 27th Mar 2022 3:27pm)

  • I know, they do private and NHS patients. Maybe they treat nhs so badly cuz they prioritise their private patients, I don’t know. Thanks for the recommendation, have you been a long term patient there? Had any complex work done- implants etc? I’m about to spend a lot of money on one particular tooth but need it to be the right place by Mombi87 (Sat 16th Apr 2022 1:02pm)

It’s all well and good estate agents saying your flat will be snapped up and it’s gone up in value, but also impossible to get offers accepted on houses cuz they keep going for crazy over the asking price. Have had reasonable offers recently turned down for “substantial offers” from Londoners on wee houses, houses that need shit tonnes of work outside of the city....we are stuck. by Mombi87 (Fri 29th Apr 2022 5:09pm)

  • Also from NI, living in glasgow. I’d avoid Govan, Ibrox and the city centre around the 12, west end I think is fine though? We always went down south over the 12th when I was growing up so I never saw a march till I came here! Absolutely hate it, but I don’t think they’re quite as big as they are at home. • Lived above a domestic abuse situation for years, my next door neighbour died of a drug overdose and was there for 2 weeks before anyone realised, the people that replaced him were trafficking young women. Me and the police were talking on a weekly basis. Govan housing association took about 4 years to fix the front door so people were constantly shitting, pissing or doing drugs in there. Not to mention match days and orange order parade days being an absolute nightmare. Loads of flats have cockroaches, because GHA (who own loads of the flats there) don’t address whole building infestations, only spot treat. The council don’t give a shit about Govan so the streets are gross and they don’t care if your bins aren’t emptied/ build up into mountains of rubbish for months. Saw rats about regularly. by Mombi87 (Mon 30th May 2022 1:46pm)

  • Went to art school between 2006-2013, there was always a pretty huge Chinese community amongst students even then. The narrative was that the GSA relied on international fees to fund itself, to the extent that the entry requirements for those students were very low. A lot of Chinese students had little to no English, which was a challenge for tutors and fellow students alike- they couldn’t integrate well with the student body, there was little collaboration between Chinese and non Chinese students, and they often performed quite poorly unfortunately. Im guessing Brexit has increased numbers of non EU international students. Perhaps more importantly though, with rising costs of being a student here, and much less importance being placed on arts education in secondary schools under a Tory government, less and less Scottish residents are choosing to study art/design at uni level. by Mombi87 (Mon 6th Jun 2022 1:42pm)
  • And while all these people are training to be doctors and architects and scientists, what do you suppose they do to switch off from saving the world? Are they allowed to watch tv, go on the Internet, listen to podcasts, go to the cinema, visit a gallery, or enjoy anything that brings them a bit of happiness? Or do you advocate that we just live in grey boxes and solve problems all day with no respite. If you want any of the above, you need art schools. Can’t believe I need to even say that. by Mombi87 (Mon 6th Jun 2022 5:39pm)
  • I think generalisations about the type of work that any nationality makes should be avoided, but the Chinese students I remember made work that was very playful and fantastical, or technological/ future looking- more so than anyone from the UK. I guess it reflected the best parts of contemporary Chinese culture in lots of ways. Perhaps also aided by the fact that they were all rich as fuck and could afford software, materials and equipment that very few of the rest of the year could! Hope that’s not mean to say, but money makes a difference. by Mombi87 (Mon 6th Jun 2022 8:13pm)

  • Covid cases are very high at the moment so it’s a good time to start wearing one again. It’s a changeable situation, not a case of wearing it for a certain length of time then never again. If you’re afraid of getting sick/ making other people sick, masks aren’t an inconvenience, they help you feel safe. • Unfortunately glasgow life is terrible at adjusting to the longer days in summer, aka it doesn’t. If you’re looking for evening culture in town I’d recommend the GFT independent cinema, which is a lovely experience apart from the film itself, or looking up concerts/ gigs in concert hall, fruitmarket, blue arrow jazz club, old hairdressers, Flying duck, Mono Or CCA. CCA is a gallery/ events space that will occasionally have evening art exhibition openings, you could get lucky with dates. by Mombi87 (Tue 28th Jun 2022 7:26pm)

I didn’t attend that group in the end, I just tried to do more stuff that got me out of the house and naturally wasn’t involving booze- gym, going for walks, joined a few groups related to my interests, and just as you say- doing things on my own that I enjoy as well. • Unfortunately people like yourself moving back because it’s cheaper to live here (than the city you went to work/ live in, presumably London but could be wrong) - is central to this entire issue. The attraction of “cheaper cities” shouldn’t even be a thing, remote working people should be paid wages that reflect cost of living where they reside. If you worked in glasgow you wouldn’t see it as cheap, it would just be standard or even expensive rent rates. No harm to you but you’ve just outlined the current issue we’re having with rent and buying of property. by Mombi87 (Fri 15th Jul 2022 12:00am)

Hard to see the beauty in that. by Mombi87 (Mon 25th Jul 2022 6:03pm)

  • I’d be wary of going down the council route, they will only help you if you agree to fixing everything in the building to a certain standard, which will end up being a much higher bill for tenants, even with the 50% matched funding. You’ll have a hard time getting neighbours to agree to it if they aren’t all owner occupiers and care about the long term future of the building. Best case scenario you do ad hoc repairs via the factors and recoup the costs from anyone who didn’t pay by taking them to small claims. Pain in the arse but there’s no easy way around people who just don’t give a fuck. by Mombi87 (Sun 31st Jul 2022 2:26pm)
  • Yeah if they dont live there or don’t plan on selling it (so don’t have to worry about red flags on a home report) there’s no incentive to pay for repairs that will future proof the place. Our council bill was going to be about 30k a flat, it would’ve been great to do it but just wasn’t possible, would’ve had to remortgage. So organised essential repairs ourselves. by Mombi87 (Sun 31st Jul 2022 3:05pm)
  • Sorry you’re having a bad time. Call the Samaritans, they will help you talk through your thoughts and how you feel. Look after yourself please, this will pass. by Mombi87 (Sun 31st Jul 2022 10:20pm)
  • Do not go, that sounds horrific. Even if they’re the best lashes ever, why would you put up with that awful customer service? You’re meant to be going in to be pampered and feel good about yourself, not to come out riddled with self doubt and second guessing yourself and thinking about how you look tired after a night shift! These places are meant to build you up, not break you down. If they can’t even do the bare minimum of be polite and decent to you, you need to do yourself a favour and find somewhere else. by Mombi87 (Mon 1st Aug 2022 4:18pm)

Live and let live definitely does become meaningless after a while, wish I could do it but when your nerves are fried and other stresses of life (health issues mainly) are coming to the fore as well, it’s pretty much impossible. I’ve only been in this flat a few years and put all my savings/ blood sweat and tears into making it a nice place, it makes this situation extra sore. • Had rats in our tenement recently. The council came out after 3 days, I know it’s shit but hold out for them, they’re a great service and put down all the necessary poisons for free. You’d be paying 2-300 quid for the same job from Rentokil. The rats were getting in through holes in outdoor vents- if you can, use wire wool to block any gaps you see around the ground floor. Also- tell everyone in the tenement not to be putting bird food out anywhere around the building. I literally watched a rat casually wander over to underneath a bird feeder from our bushes, to get the fallen scraps. Council guy said any food lying round outside is a huge issue and he’s seeing lots of folk with same problem. by Mombi87 (Wed 26th Jul 2023 11:09am)

Nobody likes upstairs noise, you’re not going to find some magical new neighbour who will be fine with toddlers constantly running about. Your wee dots might cost about 30 quid a session, 2-3 sessions. They took my line stick and poke off in 2 sessions, it’s like it was never there, absolutely brilliant. • I don’t think there’s a need for an incentive, if you ask anyone on the street they’ll have an opinion on public transport and active travel either way, it affects everyone. You’re really doing “the public” a disservice here- it sounds like you are implying that you need to be a specialist or have expertise to be able to engage with this subject matter or to discuss future plans. If you design effective engagement methods the public will come and provide valuable input. You’re not quite there yet, this all feels pretty elitist. by Mombi87 (Wed 6th Sep 2023 3:30pm)

  • The vaccine immunity reduces over time, and isn’t as relevant to new covid variants. The main thing you can do to look after your long term health is take time off work and completely rest. GP recommended 2 weeks off every time I’ve had it. It’s stressful to miss work events and fall behind, but it’s much worse to have long term fatigue. If you’re still tired, don’t ignore it and rest when your body tells you it needs it. Do not push through and try to work. I got it right at the start of a new job last year, horrific timing. If you just want the big hitters to tick off the list you’d be just as well googling and seeing what’s on trip advisor, I’d be saying exactly the same things here- museums, bus tours, art galleries, etc. Too many bars and clubs to mention. I missed it because whoever made/ sent out the appointment either sent me to the wrong place or it was supposed to be a video appointment. The receptionist couldn’t figure it out and was trying to reach a bunch of different ppl on the phone. My letter said that time and place, but the doctor wasn’t in the hospital at all today. I’m now supposed to wait on somebody to call me to figure out another time, it all seems a bit weird and ad hoc. 2 years and then this- it’s crazy. by Mombi87 (Tue 19th Sep 2023 10:40pm)

Our immune systems are permanently damaged from covid, and immunologists said it would take a few years after the pandemic for other viruses to run through communities, after lockdowns and social distancing stopped them from spreading as much. by Mombi87 (Thu 12th Oct 2023 11:12pm)

  • What is so striking is that whilst people continually share their real experiences of bad health, whether directly covid related or of other viruses, there is no more government advice, no more public health campaigns, nothing to acknowledge the continual impact of covid 19 on actual people. Nurses are getting told not to test for covid if they feel sick, for fear of reduced staff numbers. Nobody is wearing masks in medical settings. People are coughing without covering their mouths any more, like that was never sensible in the first place. Younger people who get repeatedly sick aren’t allowed vaccines, older folks who the government deem “more at risk” don’t want them. I have an autoimmune disease and have had covid 5 times, apparently I don’t have a weakened immune system, according to my gp….! Anyone reading this who wants the vaccine- go and get it. The centres are empty. by Mombi87 (Fri 13th Oct 2023 8:15pm)

My experience was that reviews were not of the doctors themselves but of rude receptionist staff or general difficulty in accessing services due to system pressures. You’ll have to get a surgery within your own postcode, and lots won’t have room for new patients, which narrows it down a lot anyway. • The appointments on later days are very variable- usually 2 or 3 weeks away. That’s a really long time when you have Crohn’s and experiencing bad symptoms, and you’re at increased risk of other health issues as a result. by Mombi87 (Tue 14th Nov 2023 1:58pm)
  • That’s terrible advice. I pay taxes to fund the NHS. Private GP appointment costs over £100. This is neither an accident or an emergency, those are happening to other people and I’m not taking up a&e time with a chronic health issue. by Mombi87 (Tue 14th Nov 2023 2:42pm)
  • It is terrible advice if you just do not have that money? It may have been a big sacrifice for you but ultimately it was feasible, a lot of people don’t have any wiggle room at all. I’m not waiting on a diagnosis or a specific type of treatment, I’m looking for ongoing care for a known condition. It would cost me thousands of pounds a year, which is not something I can afford. by Mombi87 (Tue 14th Nov 2023 3:09pm)
  • I’m supposed to be but my annual check up was cancelled because she didn’t have time to see me. I had the appointment booked in from nearly a year ago. It has coincided with a flare up, and having trouble getting to speak to the IBD nurse cuz they don’t do appointments. They randomly call you back at any time and because of my job Im not always available to pick up the phone. I asked them about booking in a time and the woman got really irritated with me. That has been going on for 2 weeks with them. Hence me going to the gp to try and get help. by Mombi87 (Tue 14th Nov 2023 3:49pm)

  • DELETED I had to abandon the NHS route because I was told I wasn’t mentally unwell enough to be referred to services, they kept fobbing me off with helplines (whilst breathing space is amazing it isn’t a substitute for therapy)… 6 years later after a long time of trying and failing to manage what I thought was just “really bad anxiety” on my own, I’ve now started private therapy and am being assessed for c-ptsd. I pay 60 quid a session twice a month, which is obviously expensive but it has saved my life and is changing my life for the better. I’d say if you can scrape together even 40-50 quid for a monthly session lots of private folks do reduced rates for underemployed or unemployed clients. Best of luck. by Mombi87 (Tue 21st Nov 2023 9:34pm)
  • DELETED I would be careful of mentioning suicide at all unless it is a real risk for you. I mentioned suicidal thoughts to my gp years ago and he wrote it incorrectly in my records as being suicidal, which is not the same.
