  • Welcome home pal, glad to have you. I'm an immigrant and all. There's loads of us and Glasgow welcomes us with wide arms. DM if any questions or need help but I bet you'll do just grand by janquadrentvincent (Fri 14th Aug 2020 9:15pm)
  • This fucking guy. His car is parked around my neck of the woods and it completely bamboozles me. It says ROBESS as one word. Is that Rob Ess? Robes with a bonus S? I'm so confused by its meaning by janquadrentvincent (Sun 16th Aug 2020 11:39am)

  • If/when the tour's reopen I'd really recommend a tour of Central Station. It was fascinating. There's a brilliant bit of archaeology off one of the tunnels, plus a great (but sad) story about repatriating bodies after WWI. Plus did you know that central station _isnt flat_ this is on purpose, to make it uncomfortable to loiter for any period of time. They designed it that way to keep foot traffic moving because it was so busy at the start. Genuinely a really cool tour but make sure you're up to it physically as it's a couple of hours of standing. by janquadrentvincent (Wed 26th Aug 2020 6:04pm)
  • Mate. The volume of people I've seen high tail it out of JD having clearly just shoplifted - I'm AMAZED they haven't hired security. by janquadrentvincent (Wed 26th Aug 2020 6:09pm)
  • I was heavily pregnant so I wasn't on my best form - and I'd booked it in with my parents who were over visiting and my mum had mobility issues so found it a bit hard - and I'd _still_ recommend it. I so wish they could let you into the old station or light it up better! by janquadrentvincent (Wed 26th Aug 2020 6:24pm)
  • Ah. I guess it was then!!! _Woooooow_ I can't wait to go on another tour now!!! by janquadrentvincent (Wed 26th Aug 2020 8:13pm)
  • I was in Kelvingrove yesterday for the bit of brief sun we had and I thought, God Glasgow is lovely. Pity I live in a shitty bit. by janquadrentvincent (Thu 10th Sep 2020 8:05am)
  • Exactly who I was going to suggest. They're A+ by janquadrentvincent (Sat 19th Sep 2020 7:45pm)
  • Sorry to disagree, but oh my god I would not suggest them. So I went to view a flat above there (sort of one door over two floors up?) and while it was absolutely the nicest flat we'd been to view we couldn't bring ourselves to put in an offer because the stench of fish in the close was bad enough to make me heave. Whilst the close probably had a communal back court with the chippy - if that's what the back of the shop smells like I wouldn't be able to go in there long enough to order my chips. Which is a shame because it does look veggie friendly. Depends how good OPs sense of smell is? by janquadrentvincent (Sat 19th Sep 2020 7:51pm)
  • How? Because I wouldn't bid on a flat that smelt horrific? by janquadrentvincent (Sat 19th Sep 2020 8:15pm)
  • It didn't smell of chips. It smelt of fish. To someone that's been a vegetarian for almost 20 years that's absolutely a reason not to bid on a place. I get that Hooked is really popular and its ok to disagree with me, but we don't know OPs situation and the overwhelming _fish_ smell might be important info to them. by janquadrentvincent (Sat 19th Sep 2020 8:24pm)
  • Yeah, I've been vegetarian for 18 years, I just couldn't handle it, even though it was beautiful. The smell and what I suspected the price would end up being, just couldn't do it. Was about May 2018. by janquadrentvincent (Sat 19th Sep 2020 8:22pm)
  • Pretty sure The Oxford on Hill St , walking towards Cowcaddens underground is safe for veggies. by janquadrentvincent (Sat 19th Sep 2020 8:35pm)
  • Fair enough. It'd be a factor for me if I were in OPs shoes so I thought it was relevant info. Happy to accept I'm in the wrong though. by janquadrentvincent (Sat 19th Sep 2020 9:00pm)
  • That is definitely not quick by janquadrentvincent (Wed 28th Oct 2020 1:21pm)
  • My building got mice last year while I was away. Came back, no one reported any more activity and I thought it was fine. A month or so later my husband went to the fesh and I'd left some Thornton's brownies on the counter. Next day I spotted poo and a munched brownie. Got humane traps and found no trapped mice but still munched food. Poo everywhere. Felt thoroughly revolted and unsafe. Turns out if you live in Glasgow City Council catchment area they will send exterminators for free! And lay poison behind your kickboard. They said traps never work and you're just encouraging them to come back because they know food will be there. The poison is eaten and they die in their nests. I really don't like the notion of killing wee creatures just trying to live their life but it was a choice between my toddler and mice and my toddler won. Keep all food in cupboards in the meantime, sealed containers or breadbin. Use Dettol spray and wipes to disinfect. And hot, hot, hot soapy water on any crockery or cookware they could have touched. by janquadrentvincent (Sat 14th Nov 2020 9:40am)
  • And bonus, they're right beside Good Spirits. by janquadrentvincent (Sat 14th Nov 2020 9:57pm)
  • Surely there's be CCTV footage though? by janquadrentvincent (Fri 20th Nov 2020 1:02pm)
  • What about making a wee glass house for the back court of your building? Whop some tomatoes in there? I'm lazy AF but its something to try and if it fails, eh, throw out the smashed bits as normal? by janquadrentvincent (Wed 25th Nov 2020 5:34pm)
  • Oh good one! There's also community garden projects - there's one in Woodlands and one in Kinning Park that I can think of off the top of my head. by janquadrentvincent (Wed 25th Nov 2020 11:01pm)
  • Didn't see Bellahousten, but then again I'm mad sleepy so could've missed it by janquadrentvincent (Fri 4th Dec 2020 3:43pm)
  • Bulky uplift has been shut since March has it not? by janquadrentvincent (Fri 4th Dec 2020 3:45pm)
  • Nice to see you think the Southside is affordable. And that we don't have jobs. Smooth. by janquadrentvincent (Fri 4th Dec 2020 3:54pm)
  • I think it's that historically (like for many hundreds of years) Govan has been very distinct from Southside and Pollokshields. Families going back generations and generations all lived within streets of each other, including mine and my partner's files until they cleared out in the late 1800s to mid 1950s. I get the Cessnock is close to the intersection of all those places, but I'd still say you're fae Govan rather than the Southside. by janquadrentvincent (Fri 4th Dec 2020 4:00pm)
  • Theres hunners of vegan and veg places in Glasgow, look at say Mono/Stereo/The 78th Note as a good spring board. But I find a lot of the nicer places in Finnieston have a veg option. Also, recommending it because I've JUST had some last week and it was expensive but holy moly was it worth every penny so it'll need to be reserved for special occasions - there's a "fried chicken" place called Absurd Vird. They're on Uber Eats - so maybe a voucher for them? by janquadrentvincent (Fri 4th Dec 2020 5:09pm)
  • Got a great tree lined avenue. The back of the park got somewhat destroyed in a festival just prior to lockdown and I don't think they're taken the fences down yet, but there's loads of nooks and crannies to explore. It's got plenty to love in it, enjoy. by janquadrentvincent (Fri 4th Dec 2020 5:05pm)
  • You know what's not Christmassy? Judging someone else's gift choices. by janquadrentvincent (Fri 4th Dec 2020 5:10pm)
  • Whaaaaaat? Like almost every bit, bar the mac and cheese. I'm a vegetarian of 20 years, and me, a vegan (former) chef and his also vegan wife thought it was brilliant. The mac and cheese was piss poor and an absolute rip off at 5.80, but I had the waffle slider, they had the Korean BBQ and the Buffalo burger. Other sides were tenders, onion rings and three rounds of spicy chips. Outstanding stuff. Truly wow factor food. I'm almost wondering if we're talking about the same place. Absurd VIRD is a vegan BBQ chicken place in city centre, but there's and Absurd Bird that's... I dunno, because I've never ate there. by janquadrentvincent (Fri 4th Dec 2020 11:34pm)
  • Thanks for putting it far better than me! Spot on. by janquadrentvincent (Sat 5th Dec 2020 10:51am)
  • Well your ratio is better than ours. 1 blue for 8 flats in my building. Same for the whole street, place ends up hoaching with trash that gets left on the street, then bins are collected and street trash is left untouched and then the bin is instantly full again because there was 3/4 of a dumpster sitting on the street. Worst part of my area is that it is just constantly full of trash by janquadrentvincent (Sat 5th Dec 2020 10:50am)
  • I can't afford a 3 bed in southside as most everything is coming up at 250, so that and the 10% sweetener sellers want over that neck of the woods means I'm priced out. So my double full time income family doesn't find that especially affordable. I don't know why I've been downvoted for being annoyed at being called jobless or calling affordability of Southside into question, I don't get this sub half the time. by janquadrentvincent (Sat 5th Dec 2020 4:28pm)
  • I meant £250,000 to buy. Don't think there anywhere in Glasgow that's £250 a month for three beds! by janquadrentvincent (Sat 5th Dec 2020 8:03pm)
  • Now you see why I'm offended by someone saying Southside is affordable and that anyone living there is without a job. Two incomes and it's still not affordable. That's some Greek Thompson level of bullshit. by janquadrentvincent (Sat 5th Dec 2020 9:14pm)
  • My BIL would be appalled at Clarkson being considered southside _of Glasgow_. He delights in it being out of GCC. I always address my Christmas cards as Clarkston and then Glasgow. I don't think he's cottoned on I'm doing it for a rise yet. by janquadrentvincent (Sat 5th Dec 2020 9:18pm)
  • Yuuuuuup. And 5% mortgages are gone for the foreseeable. Getting on the housing ladder here, now, requires SO much cash. Glasgow is no where near as bad as other cities here and abroad, but I guess it just shows no where is safe from the property bubble. by janquadrentvincent (Sat 5th Dec 2020 10:15pm)
  • Thank you for introducing me to this place. Will go first thing when the holidays are done by janquadrentvincent (Thu 24th Dec 2020 4:24pm)
  • It's quality but I found the choices limited - at least last year anyway by janquadrentvincent (Thu 24th Dec 2020 4:23pm)
  • His name is Falconhoof by janquadrentvincent (Sat 2nd Jan 2021 12:14am)
  • I know a couple of people in some council positions - but none in GCC. I get this terrible, dreadful feeling that they don't recycle it at all. My area hasn't had collection in weeks and people are resorting to fly tipping. Have done the whole year long. What in the hell am I paying my Council Tax for at this point? by janquadrentvincent (Sat 2nd Jan 2021 6:39pm)
  • Ooooft, my MIL said the snow was worse at her bit, but she didn't say it was a goddamn fairytale by janquadrentvincent (Fri 8th Jan 2021 7:03pm)
  • Thanks for this, I've told my neighbours. One of them is a smoker who stands on front of building late at night and has a lot of footage of people driving up, dumping across the road and then driving away. Honestly it's crazy the level of entitlement these people have. Our bins are already overflowing. What prats. by janquadrentvincent (Thu 21st Jan 2021 3:03pm)
  • Wait, WHEN WAS YOURS TAKEN??? by janquadrentvincent (Sun 24th Jan 2021 8:37am)
  • Yeah I've reached the conclusion the only way this is going to be fixed if someone from here runs for council. Not only is our trash/garbage/rubbish/whatever and recycling never fucking picked up. Ever. But people come to our area and fly tip. Like in the dead of night rocking up in a car to secrete trash. Plus my area is the last in the whole city to receive new bins. Or at least when they sent the flyer last year and I looked into it we were scheduled last. Then one bin up the road changed and I think that was it maybe? The big change they'd promised was one bin for one building? Council probably used covid as an excuse to not do that either so god knows when the new bins will happen. I'm straight up furious. What have we paid our council tax for in the last year, seriously??? Graffiti removal, stopped. Recycling, stopped. Dumps, closed. Cleansing, stopped. Rubbish collection, intermittent. I'm fucking sick of this council of clowns. by janquadrentvincent (Sun 24th Jan 2021 8:44am)
  • I've just tried to look up my councillor on GCC website. Said my street doesn't exist. Fucking hell what a shit show. by janquadrentvincent (Sun 24th Jan 2021 8:46am)
  • Yeeeeeah mines full already. Bugger. I tend to go to the big one at the underground anyway since I figure it I drop mine there maybe my neighbours will be more likely to recycle if there's space in our bins by janquadrentvincent (Sun 24th Jan 2021 1:47pm)
  • He invented it when his wife left him, and took the children, and the dog, and he lost everything. I hear it's very effective. by janquadrentvincent (Mon 25th Jan 2021 4:42pm)
  • Hahahahahahahaha the council doesn't clean up the rest of the fucking time. You think dignitaries will mean jackshit to them? by janquadrentvincent (Thu 28th Jan 2021 12:06pm)
  • Mate. Maaaaaaaate. The bins are full. At a certain point there's only so much balancing you can do on top of an already full dumpster. The council is at fault first and foremost. by janquadrentvincent (Thu 28th Jan 2021 12:45pm)
  • I'm not from here either, so the bins on the street that are big ass black ones with a heavy lid - resembling a dumpster? I'm going to go ahead and call that a dumpster because I figure you still get what I mean. by janquadrentvincent (Thu 28th Jan 2021 6:30pm)
  • OH IS SHE DOING SUSAN BOYLE???? by janquadrentvincent (Fri 29th Jan 2021 2:24pm)
  • Look if it means she's one of Ru's favourites I will smile along and laugh every week. Just like Lawrence does because that bitch knows better than to bite the hand that feeds her. by janquadrentvincent (Fri 29th Jan 2021 2:23pm)
  • This sub is wild for extraneous downvotes but you did the right thing asking. On the current American season (13) there's a ftm trans contestant. Most people when they talk about Drag Queens just call them "she/her" but when a contestant keeps their boy name a lot of people can get confused, which is fair but unless specified "she/her" is the go to - so when this ftm contestant started the fandom had to pause and go - oh hold on a minute is that still what we do - and thankfully it was addressed in the second episode and we're to call her "she/her" the same as all the other contestants otherwise she'd have felt singled out. That was another Queen asking her that question, so it's not always obvious or easy and asking is the polite thing to do. by janquadrentvincent (Fri 29th Jan 2021 3:29pm)
  • Hiya, so for my work I handle a lot of delivery disputes. The thing is -courier and delivery services do not have an ombudsman or regulation- instead of you are disputing delivery your complaint goes back to the company who posted it and it is their job to rectify. So I would complain to the sender. Whether the address was wrong or not you tried to alert them - plus it's not the right name on that door. They courier can check the address against the electoral role and confirm you don't live there. So that's your next port of call. Maybe you can at least get a partial refund for the second order? by janquadrentvincent (Wed 3rd Feb 2021 1:03pm)
  • Agreed. by janquadrentvincent (Mon 8th Feb 2021 10:47pm)
  • Funny you should say that. The graffiti unit has been closed for the last year now. Because there is graffiti on my building I want removed and have called them periodically since April to have it removed. Nada by janquadrentvincent (Sun 28th Feb 2021 6:18pm)
  • I really don't think any of us are making excuses for GCC at this point. I honestly don't know what I'm paying my Council tax for. The lights in my close are controlled by GCC but we have to pay for them. Recycling is a joke, trash everywhere, the graffiti unit has been shut a year. I don't know what I'm paying for. I would rather they separate out the water that's incorporated into it so I could still pay that but not pay GCC to continue to do ... Nothing at all. Far out. Vote the whole mob out. by janquadrentvincent (Sun 28th Feb 2021 6:16pm)
  • Oh good lord I didn't know that was a thing. Thank you by janquadrentvincent (Sat 6th Mar 2021 11:07am)
  • Do you know if Buchanan Galleries ones are open? They've got really great family loos. by janquadrentvincent (Sat 6th Mar 2021 12:55pm)
  • Were they? That's really helpful thank you. by janquadrentvincent (Sat 6th Mar 2021 12:55pm)
  • Boo, thanks! by janquadrentvincent (Sat 6th Mar 2021 2:09pm)
  • The loos at Central aren't paid for currently - they've got signs up and all. by janquadrentvincent (Sat 6th Mar 2021 2:08pm)

  • I'm just SO delighted. Oan yersel hen. by janquadrentvincent (Fri 19th Mar 2021 12:53am)
  • Fucking fuck. by janquadrentvincent (Fri 19th Mar 2021 12:52am)
  • It has literally been a year since the food waste was collected. Our blue, inadequately small blue bin has now been removed. My building has 8 flats in it and ONE small blue bin now gone AWOL that is collected less than once a week. Pray tell, how in good fuck are we meant to recycle? by janquadrentvincent (Sat 20th Mar 2021 7:02pm)
  • Yes. I think that is a fair way to comport oneself by janquadrentvincent (Sat 20th Mar 2021 7:28pm)
  • Yet another voice saying the goddamn bins. I honestly don't know what my council tax has paid for in the last year. The rates are through for this year and they've gone up a smidge. Pray tell - what have my council taxes ACTUALLY paid for this past year? It hasn't been graffiti removal, because I've been trying to get some removed since March and have been informed that the service has been suspended indefinitely even though this is an outdoor, "specialist" team that could presumably have operated during covid - but I suppose the lure of the Westminster covering their wages was too great. It hasn't been to eradicate fly tipping, because that is WILD in my area in the last year. It hasn't been to collect the compost/food waste, because that's been suspended for a full year too. It hasn't been to replace our bins like the leaflet I received stated would occur last year because I still have the teeny tiny useless blue bin for a close of 8 flats that has been collected at most once every three weeks last year and has now gone AWOL. It hasn't been to collect the communal recycling collection points as they frequently get so full and left to fester that I take photos and tweet them in horror that they can let this happen to our city. It hasn't been to keep the pavements clean because they're covered in dog shite and smashed glass. WHAT have I been paying them for? by janquadrentvincent (Sat 20th Mar 2021 8:03pm)
  • I have been assured by someone who works for the council that our recycling is most definitely not being recycled. I hate this council SO much. by janquadrentvincent (Sat 20th Mar 2021 8:05pm)
  • Some things I've thought are truly great, increased pedestrianisation of Sauchiehall for one. My area is full of bus lanes and cyclist lanes and there's public bikes and electric charging stations 5 minutes walk from me. So it seems to me like "new" initiatives are executed really well. The problems that I see have stemmed from long standing structural issues. Systems and processes in place for years and years breaking down until the wheels fall off - potentially because whichever civil servant in charge of them are incompetent or incapable of change. While I appreciate that they're "experimenting" to find an acceptable approach to the bins what's happening ain't working and they need to go back to the drawing board and experiment some more. by janquadrentvincent (Mon 22nd Mar 2021 8:08pm)
  • Iiiiiiinteresting - so they really don't do a walk through? by janquadrentvincent (Mon 22nd Mar 2021 8:14pm)
  • Bugger, here I was being hopeful... by janquadrentvincent (Mon 22nd Mar 2021 9:03pm)
  • Mate, where are you getting that from??? by janquadrentvincent (Sun 28th Mar 2021 3:27pm)
  • Agreed, Queen's Crescent was a lovely practice whilst I was there. I would add for OP. If you have previously been diagnosed with something it helps going into the appointment with a clear purpose. I've found when I already knew my diagnosis and I could articulate what I needed it was a much faster process. I moved from a foreign country here too, I had medications I was on that needed equivalents and follow up for existing conditions. I could say "I've made this appointment because I was diagnosed with X so I'm hoping you can start the process with y because that would have been what happened next back in z" This makes their job much easier as they just go, alright no exploration needed and refer you to the next step of the process and you'll go into the waitlist and get a letter out for the next available appointment. On the other hand if you're too vague or are looking for them to figure out what's wrong and what comes next you may have a tougher time on your hands. My partner was turned away 7 times before finally being referred to a surgeon - who then immediately booked him for an op. You have to be firm, and determined within the NHS. Go, say you need a referral to an endocrinologist, suggest they do a fresh set of bloods at the same time so there's a record in your file and be firm saying you know that's what you need. Then wait for your letter. Best of luck!! by janquadrentvincent (Sun 28th Mar 2021 3:37pm)
  • Yep, also there's a REALLY good chippie just near it that does these Indian fritters. So basically sliced potato deep fried in a red pakora batter. At least there used to be. Worth looking out for! by janquadrentvincent (Sun 28th Mar 2021 6:15pm)
  • Yeah nah. Some deficiencies cannot be treated by eXeRcIsE and DiEt, and diminishing their medical needs by saying "eat better" really does nothing helpful for OP. Yours, someone with a medically diagnosed deficiency completely unmanageable through diet. by janquadrentvincent (Sun 28th Mar 2021 6:20pm)
  • Nope, you've got three blue bins - I've got none by janquadrentvincent (Mon 29th Mar 2021 2:24pm)
  • From my understanding both parties must agree to the outcomes - but they aren't legally binding. However if one party doesn't keep to that agreement that can then be used as ammunition in court. by janquadrentvincent (Tue 30th Mar 2021 9:19am)
  • Agreed, contact the health visitor. It's been a lot harder for them over the lockdown to keep up with their checks but _also_ means that everyone has sort of lost track of what visits they're meant to be having. It means he can talk to the health visitor and they can say "oh this is the 40 month check up" and everyone will just kinda shrug and go ok and let it happen. As she's staying with family though, like he said it will appear a safe environment, but they can certainly question the mother re her drinking and mental health and maybe get a sense of what's going on from that. by janquadrentvincent (Tue 30th Mar 2021 9:17am)
  • Been here 7 years. Best city I've lived in. Welcome!! by janquadrentvincent (Tue 30th Mar 2021 4:09pm)
  • I don't find it sad she'll have to move from the west end, why shouldn't she? I find it really puzzling that she wouldn't actively move out of the west end to get more for her money? Of course you get fuck all in the west end for that price. Like duh. You go for the best property you can afford in the best area for your needs. She wants parks and subway links? Guess what, Govan has those. Why wouldn't she consider properties there? I understand withholding her rent for wanting basic repairs to make the place habitable. The holes are absolutely unacceptable and it's outrageous they didn't repair them in the first place - practically and probably criminal. But I don't support her complaints about the size and her fridge being on carpet, and having nowhere for her laundry to dry (or a tumble dryer!! Lady are you kidding me?!). Those complaints lessen the validity of her whole argument because you go "it's £340, from a HA, OF COURSE ITS SMALL" by janquadrentvincent (Tue 30th Mar 2021 9:23pm)
  • Yeah, I used to use Twitter to post pictures of the overflowing bins and recycling but it just got me angry and they ignored it. So sick of this circus tent of wallopers running the show. by janquadrentvincent (Wed 31st Mar 2021 2:54pm)
  • Can confirm, am Australian, saw kids out the chippy drop their trash on the ground when a bin was metres away and I growled at them to pick it back up. I felt like such an old fuck but it was instinctual, it gets trained into (the majority of) us. by janquadrentvincent (Wed 31st Mar 2021 2:52pm)
  • Yeah whoever this Susan character is she's getting a swift boot our of office at the first chance. Far out what an absurd response. by janquadrentvincent (Wed 31st Mar 2021 2:50pm)
  • If I were the greens party I would field a fucktonne of candidates on the sole platform of " we take the bin situation seriously" by janquadrentvincent (Wed 31st Mar 2021 2:56pm)
  • Aaaah it's definitely the latter because that's exactly what happens - what bit is the handyman to drill at then? by janquadrentvincent (Fri 2nd Apr 2021 4:34pm)
  • Cheers, that's so helpful, thanks mate. by janquadrentvincent (Fri 2nd Apr 2021 6:48pm)
  • Let us know if you get it printed up in some form! by janquadrentvincent (Mon 12th Apr 2021 8:45pm)

  • The police were there NOT to assist the Home Office but rather whenever that many people congregate they show up for crowd control. I do believe Police Scotland are the ones that forced the release by making a unilateral "operational decision" by janquadrentvincent (Fri 14th May 2021 1:26pm)
  • Move on up mate, we could use your vote down the track. by janquadrentvincent (Fri 14th May 2021 2:01pm)

  • Nah I'm not in G40s but I'm still southside, bit perplexed really. by janquadrentvincent (Sat 15th May 2021 2:30pm)
  • My close is fucking hoaching with piss this morning. I've really enjoyed lockdown because it meant no one pissed on my doorstep going from one pub to the next. I appreciate this makes me an old fart, but it's manky whichever way you cut it. by janquadrentvincent (Sun 16th May 2021 8:30am)
  • Did you not get the street sweeper round last night? Paisley Rd West got cleared by a private street sweeper early evening. It was a beast too, street looks better than normal (though it couldn't get onto the sidewalk) - I assume Rangers have paid for it. Be nice if they sent round a powerwasher to get rid of the pish on my front doorstep though. by janquadrentvincent (Sun 16th May 2021 8:38am)
  • See, I'm in a neighbouring area, like a few miles away, but still fairly close, Saturday my partner and I both got texts informing us we had emergency vaccine spots and to call up and check the time. I assume it's the same for the rest of my street though a friend another mile up the road haven't got their texts yet. I think they ARE acting but there isn't transparency about this or adequate press releases leading you to think nothing is happening. by janquadrentvincent (Mon 17th May 2021 12:26pm)

  • I've gotten two other people's letters. Some people just never update their address with the GP or in my case give a false address for some reason (I know who has lived here for the last 15 years plus before me and it is not who I got letters for). by janquadrentvincent (Mon 17th May 2021 12:57pm)
  • Yeah, why not big up the obvious effort that's taking to implement? Why no feel good stories on it? They need a PR person clearly. by janquadrentvincent (Mon 17th May 2021 1:07pm)
  • Aw mate really sorry. I moved here from a foreign city and have loved it because the areas I've lived have always been fairly community minded and friendly even when they weren't even the best bits of town (unlike where I came from which is wildly unfriendly). I think you've moved into a dud street I'm afraid. There are some pockets of town even one street over from posh areas that are rough as hell. It just comes from experience. You can now say you've lived in a shitehole and chalk it up to experience. Time to look for a new place. There are tonnes of lovely and still affordable places you can move to. Is there a reason you chose where you did other than price that we should know about? by janquadrentvincent (Tue 18th May 2021 6:12pm)

  • Today I sat about waiting for a delivery. Tracked it from half an hour away from me. Driver rated 4.9, great thought I, I don't need to worry. Saw it on the parcel just before me and hovered at door ready to buzz them in - although a light breeze would open the street door. DING sorry you weren't in. The fucker then uploaded a picture of THE WRONG FUCKING STREET to show he'd attempted delivery. More than 110m from my front door. What in the fuck DPD. What in the fuck. by janquadrentvincent (Sun 20th Jun 2021 2:00am)
  • Hard disagree. Taking it to other bins on your street means the residents of those buildings have less space for their rubbish and then the problem continues. The bin at my flat has a missing lid, making it a target for fly tipping so my bin is often overflowing because other people aren't thinking of the impact on us of their excess waste. At least stacking the rubbish beside your own bin gives the council a true reflection of the volume they should be planning for. by janquadrentvincent (Wed 23rd Jun 2021 2:24pm)
  • Oh my god you're an idiot. by janquadrentvincent (Wed 23rd Jun 2021 7:20pm)
  • I think it's a relic, don't worry. My property had the same condition and our solicitor said that unless it had been very recently enforced then it was unenforceable. Two months later another property in the tenement was sold and they had two cats and no one blinked an eye. Congrats on the flat - and the puppy!! Enjoy! by janquadrentvincent (Thu 24th Jun 2021 2:33pm)
  • While I don't have a pet I nearly hit the roof when I saw it. Buying is so damn stressful and every little thing makes you think you've made a mistake and start double guessing your choice etc. Nightmare. So when I read that I thought "just what we need, something else wrong with this place" the solicitor was thoroughly unfazed by it, very common, also very much not something to worry about. by janquadrentvincent (Thu 24th Jun 2021 2:40pm)
  • Leave NO FOOD ANYWHERE. Not in traps, not on the counter, not in the drain, not in the stove. No. Food. Anywhere. I'm really anti killing things but when mice droppings appeared in my flat I had a newly crawling baby and I made my choice. Called the council, they sent out pest control. Poison behind the kickboards. So it's up to you. You can try deterrent steps like finding the gaps they're getting in, peppermint oil etc, and have a wee battle for several weeks of will they won't they come back or you can call the council. Whatever you do though, traps and baits involving food do not work, neither do any catch and release traps. Don't waste your money and time on them. by janquadrentvincent (Sun 27th Jun 2021 9:08pm)
  • I'm just repeating the advice given to me by GCC pest control. They said if there is any food whatsoever it will attract them. Doesn't matter if you catch one, the rest can smell the food and will come back again and again with food there, knowing this place is a reliable source of food. A snap trap kills one, but then there's just peanut butter sitting out for the rest of the night for the rest of them. They said the best option was to make your place unattractive by having nothing edible available because why would they come back if they can't smell anything out? And then the only thing that is available to them is poison that won't kill them til they're in their nest - meaning you don't need to deal with wee corpses. So that's a good option in my books. by janquadrentvincent (Tue 29th Jun 2021 12:42am)

  • You could play the Look Up game where you walk round the centre of town and find each of your favourite buildings? Obviously the idea is that you look up at the skyline and architecture. I love the hat rack building on St Vincent St for instance. Then you could have some shared plates at Stereo which is in a Rennie Mackintosh designed building that used to house a printing press. Also as the food is vegan it could be a bit of a talking point (and safe if you don't know their dietary requirements)? I personally love a pub trivia too since you find out if each other has really niche interests, and it's easy to go with friends so you have a safety net of you need it. There's a few snooker clubs in town too? Rent a table for a couple of hours? That could be fun? If the weather holds and you can drive you could even go berry picking? Because even if the company turns out to be crap you each have a shit tonne of soft fruit to make up for it. But full disclosure I'm an old fud sooooo I have no idea what 20 year olds enjoy doing. by janquadrentvincent (Sun 25th Jul 2021 12:46pm)

  • Are you just looking at Woodlands? I paid 750 to live off Great Western Rd about 7 years ago, and I only got that because one of us wasn't a student AND we showed them copies of our bank statements to prove we could afford it, and could pass a credit agreement at that amount. Real estate agents tend to have a prejudice against students - the more desirable the area the bigger the prejudice. You're going to struggle in my opinion not because of anything you've done but because there's going to be non students looking in those areas too and they'll get it before you. Try Kinning Park, Cessnock, Ibrox and Govan. They're on the subway route so are still plenty accessible for uni and there's more available. by janquadrentvincent (Wed 11th Aug 2021 3:22pm)

  • Live in the area, say hi to the folk with the curly haired hellion. Cons: the trash. Paisley Rd West is an absolute disgrace. Fly tipping has gotten out of hand and it doesn't help that I've seen school kids and 60 year olds alike drop their trash when there is a bin LITERALLY 5 metres from them. Makes me furiously angry. The recycling in the area is virtually non existent. _However_ even though the council has dropped bin uplift to once every 8 days I've noticed that prior to a game they pick up the bins! It's a surprising bonus. Rangers have also paid for private street sweepers to go along the roads after _events_. So there's that. Cons: no grocery options, there's no BIG shop to get your weekly shop because hoiking tins back up the road from Asda is a bit of trek. I would recommend getting groceries delivered (most people around here that don't drive do) and getting your bits and bobs from coop and the corner shops. The folk at Co-op are so, _so_ friendly. And you'll likely develop relationships with all the corner shops. ALSO, some of the shops have literally the best deals on lentils and spices and fresh okra. There's also about three shops in a row that have about 12 varieties of potatoes between them. Quality. Cons: if you're not top floor of the tenement you'll hear others footsteps. If you are top floor your roof maaaaaaay leak. YMMV but yeah. Cons: that end of the area has quite a bit of dog poo about. I've never caught the culprits but some weeks it's ridiculous Cons: orange walks. If it's not your thing it can be quite irritating. Pros: transport. It's great for subway, buses, motorway and Ubers. Really accessible area Pros: great for take away, because Paisley Rd West is a big main road I usually find my takeaways arrive incredibly quickly, it's a surprising bonus. Pros: decent green spaces. Theres festival park, but do t go there after match day or late at night, the park at Kinning, Bellahousten which even has an off leash park and Pollok for when you want to go visit some chilled out cows. Pros: community. I've found a far greater sense of community here than in the west end or city centre when I've lived in those bits. As I said it's easy to develop relationships with all the shopkeepers and your neighbours, there's some genuinely lovely people round here. Clyde community hall, galgeal there's all kinds of social enterprises in the area. Pros: it's getting trendy. There are some really great businesses opening up in the area. PS Register at Midlock NOT Walmer for your GP. Seriously I cannot stress that enough. by janquadrentvincent (Sat 14th Aug 2021 6:44pm)
  • If that's your budget go for Kinning Park, Ibrox, Cessnock and Govan. Not a perfect area by any means but gets you on housing ladder and since you're going to need to compromise on location that area has decent transport links so you can still hang about in southside if you like. by janquadrentvincent (Tue 17th Aug 2021 9:04am)
  • I know an NI guy that lives on Copeland Rd. The people that actually live here don't give a toss where you're from. Half the people in the area I know don't even follow football. I appreciate there's plenty that do, but people who are moving to the area are young, in your shoes, want to take advantage of the location v price situation. I haven't met anyone that moved to the area _because_ of the stadium. by janquadrentvincent (Tue 17th Aug 2021 10:25am)

  • The goal was to recover the parcel, and it wasn't a scam IMO, but they didn't quite follow procedure. I worked in an industry where I had to call DPD constantly to discuss missing packages. And I do mean _constantly_, through all my dealings with them I think structurally DPD are decent even if individually some drivers are dumb as a butt (personally I've had issues with drivers paying more attention to the sat nav than logic and believing they could drive up to the back court of another building and somehow get into mine). The claims procedure means that even though the company posting it is liable for the replacement most companies pay for insurance with the courier meaning the courier ends up paying for the replaced item eventually, so there's a recovery procedure because no one wants to send out a new item. So what happens is the driver that done fucked up has to go back to the address they delivered to, it's meant to be the driver because they are supposed to be tipped off about an issue if it's a different person to who opened the door originally, their memory is supposed to be jogged by the location and they have photos of the door etc. So either the drivers that came to your door didn't include the original driver (and they were doing a favour to the driver who was still on their route) or the original driver really was dumb AF. It's not usual for two to go out - but I have heard it happen when the driver cites they're uncomfortable. So maybe the complainant is really rude, or there was a dog, or whatever - I had both a driver and a customer call the cops on each other once (and then I also had to call the cops on the customer too, so fun times) so while two drivers can be intimidating and certainly how they went about it sounds like that may have been the aim it's still perfectly reasonable for two to go instead of one. by janquadrentvincent (Thu 30th Sep 2021 7:35am)
  • A school nearby has only now just announced that they're shutting for the 1st and 2nd of October. They gave parents less than a month's notice of this. Buuuuuuuuullshit by janquadrentvincent (Sun 10th Oct 2021 3:58pm)

  • I'm really conflicted since I do want it to go well. I love this city, and am proud we got the event. I would love for these world leaders and delegates to see what I see in terms of what Glasgow has to offer. What I'm fucking furious about is GCCs apparent lack of preparation for it. I walk past the area 5 days a week. The city is clatty and it is not looking it's best, a "spruce up" won't get us there. Yes covid happened but they also let the city get to this state. Why is our recycling still so poor? Five minutes from site there is recycling bins disgustingly overfilled. Get to residential areas on the other side of the bridge and recycling bins aren't even provided to residents. How we can host a summit of this nature but can't even recycle properly is beyond anyone's guess. by janquadrentvincent (Mon 11th Oct 2021 8:15pm)

  • Pretty standard Strayans then. I just saw an _STV sponsored ad_ saying Eat Less Meat for the environment. That is SUCH a foreign concept in Aus - where the lamb farmers sponsor high concept ads encouraging _more_ meat consumption. Australia is so far from net zero it's laughable. Don't even know why Scummo bothered showing up. by janquadrentvincent (Tue 9th Nov 2021 2:17pm)
  • So I'm walking past the area four times a day, the whole way up Finnieston St and down again. Delegates have largely been unfriendly - just preoccupied civil servants and middle managers all caught up in their own importance. When I've tried to offer help to people I overheard who were lost I was looked at like I had two heads. There have been some exceptions though so I'm hoping they were just bad eggs. My ire however is reserved for the protesters. The repeated protests blocking the squinty bridge does nothing to the delegates, nothing to the world leaders and everything to the _working class people walking home on a cold, wet autumn night_. Twice now they've blockaded it and to what end? First time my partner had to take a 40 minute diversion to walk home, second time last night I texted warnings that the bridge would close imminently as 100 polis showed up while I was walking towards it - and thankfully got to leave work early to avoid it. But what honestly is this achieving? They'd have more impact blowing up an oil refinery and I'd not think of them as massive hypocrites. (Please don't put me on a list somewhere) Also that tuneless Darth Vader wank can do one. by janquadrentvincent (Tue 9th Nov 2021 2:39pm)

There's actually a website though for Tim Tams and Shapes and Burger Rings etc. It's called SANZA - discovered it when I was desperate for some eucalyptus drops. by janquadrentvincent (Sat 11th Jun 2022 6:54pm)
  • Yeah, _not_ the pomegranate or kiwi flavours which are mass produced and low alcohol. In Aus and NZ they sell far better flavours of high alcohol content cider with fruit wine. They had a scrumpy too which was excellent. The stuff I used to get was 9% - I'm sure as they got bigger they changed the recipe and then it made sense to go down the route they've taken now but I miss it all the same. by janquadrentvincent (Sat 11th Jun 2022 8:01pm)
  • I always book a black hack to get there and take one from the rank home again after the trip. Literally EVERY taxi I have ever had coming home from the airport has been superb. Clean, super friendly, good chat, helpful with bags. They're so nice that they make you feel glad to be home again. And I always wind up tipping them because my bag weighs a tonne - so maybe it's a ripoff but I'm always happy to pay it. by janquadrentvincent (Wed 15th Jun 2022 12:17am)
  • I'm about to move into the east Dunbartonshire council area. So I called them to check re bulky/electrical uplift and sort my council tax as I'd sent them an email 4 days prior and wanted to follow up. For a start when I called I was in a queue, all of three people long. The bulky uplift charge covered not one item but several, basically you told them what you want them to take and they run it through a calculator and then tell you if it's under the limit of one charge or whether it'll be more. If it'll be more it first gets reviewed by another team to ensure the charge is accurate. I'm going to get broken electrics uplifted and all our packing boxes and some bulky plastic picked up and it'll be £24.22 for the lot! They then transferred me to the council tax line. First agent dropped the line - but the call didn't end I was just dropped back into the queue and immediately answered afterwards, the original agent called me back while I was speaking to the new agent. They had already set up my council tax for me and had a hold on a letter to arrive for me on our move in date. I'm going to pay about £40 more a month on my tax and I think I'm getting a bargain. by janquadrentvincent (Fri 17th Jun 2022 7:27am)

  • I used to live opposite a parking lot where the Chinese expat community would practice with their dragon and drums for New Year parades. They always practised between 1-4pm on a Saturday. If we ban all marches relating to community and belief we lose out on Chinese New Year and Pride and all kinds of things that enrich our culture. The problem is not that a group wants to celebrate something important to them whether we agree with it or not. The issue is if I've got a hangover and it's 8am. by janquadrentvincent (Sat 20th Aug 2022 12:16pm)

But order earlier than you want to eat by at least 90minutes because they are really, really slow due to the massive demand. • QEUH have fantastic theatre staff. I was less impressed though by other aspects of the experience. First time I was severely anemic during pregnancy and then post birth after blood loss I was suuuuuper duper unwell. Meals were a big problem. First couple of days I was in I couldn't get out of bed down the hall to the meal room and what was there wasn't great. The proximity to a M&S (onsite in main building) was really a massive bonus to me as everyone coming to see us brought something. As you'll know you're not going to be allowed food throughout the labour. Finally, in the recovery I was at last given food. It was 3am by this point, there was one sandwich floating around. I was ravenous. Wheeled up to ward about 4. Woken at 5.30 by an orderly dropping off a bowl of dry cereal with no milk. Could have cried. So BRING FOOD. Second time was a lot different because of covid, got out way faster which was fantastic. A midwife did my stitches though and didn't believe me when I told her I needed more drugs because I could feel what she was doing. I told her and told her and told her to numb the area more but again she didn't believe me that I could feel it. So that was pretty bad. Similarly the first time round my and my partner's wishes weren't fully adhered to, but I understand why they took the actions they did. Doesn't mean I'm happy about it. So. Bring (lots of) food. And advocate for yourself. But seriously the theatre staff are lovely. by janquadrentvincent (Thu 29th Sep 2022 11:10am)

Not 2 minutes cycle from Macdonald's and aaaaaall of the Finnieston pubs and restaurants. There were SO many other options available to this dude other than A PRIMARY SCHOOL. • So I'd plan your days around zones. One day walk yourself down the bottom of Byres Rd and take a left and start walking towards Kelvingrove which is the big ass Harry Potter type building. Get yourself in for a walkabout (entry by donation if you can afford it) and enjoy the organ recital at 1pm. Then for lunch head back to the bottom of Byres to Dumpling Monkey for some pot stickers - then personally I'd go to the pub for a few hours, Brew Dog (though the founders are a bit trash it's not the bar staffs fault) is opposite Kelvingrove and you can stand at the bar and chat to others that are into it while you wait for a table. It's a craft beer bar and the staff know their stuff. Although maybe swing past Tantrum Donuts just the street behind for an artisanal donut before settling in at the pub for a bit. Then Mother India for dinner. Glasgow is especially famous for curries and Mother India is one of the best although I personally prefer Ashoka, but Mother India is just beside BrewDog. Another zone for a day is the top of Byres Rd, start for brunch at Hillhead Book Club, then over the road for a walk about the Botanics and the Kelvin Way which will lead you all the way down to... Another bar. This one is called Inn Deep and is definitely worth looking at for its vaulted arches. Then keep following the walk and enjoy Kelvingrove Park (have a look from Park Circus). Walk back up to Inn Deep and onto Great Western Road and get a chippie from Philadelphia. Then walk up the road back to Byres Rd and end your day at Oran Mor. OR keep walking to Cottiers in Hyndland and have your dinner there and then double back to Oran Mor - since that's open til 3am (but beware it's harder to get in after midnight) by janquadrentvincent (Tue 4th Apr 2023 7:52pm)

  • I would not recommend June Brides Service. The owner did my fitting and announced "she would choose my dress, not me" she then picked a bunch of dresses I absolutely would not have worn and then when I volunteered the silhouette I actually wanted then suddenly backtracked saying she knew I'd wanted that all along. Honestly painful to behold. Then quite pushy wanting me to order something I was undecided on. Eleganza Sposa similarly I would not recommend. I only had one person with me. They took that to signify I wasn't seriously shopping and didn't give me much attention, and I only got to try on three dresses as a result. Photos are not allowed. Really wasn't the treatment I expected from such I high end boutique. Ended up getting mine designed and made (in a rush) for £1500 by a costume designer in the West End. Delighted. by janquadrentvincent (Fri 19th May 2023 9:17pm)

  • What in the fuck are you trying to say here? by janquadrentvincent (Wed 12th Jul 2023 1:19pm)
  • Concerts/gigs are cheaper. Plus loads more acts come here. You travel for four hours on a plane here you're in Europe. Travel for four hours in Australia you're still in Australia. Distances here are much smaller. Genuinely the schooling here is better. Fruit and veg aren't seasonal because it's easier to import stuff. No cyclone in Queensland is taking away your banana toast. And, although this thread isn't showing it, but Glaswegians are a far, far nicer group of people than Australians. There is a whole attitude shift here. Street harassment in Australia is out of control. King hits - random drunken cowardly cruelty. Sure it _can_ happen here, it happens everywhere, but not to the scale of Australia. Australians can be cold, disingenuous, pretentious, class obsessed no marks puffing up their own nations importance and for what? Glasgow has a quality you'll not find anywhere else. It's friendly and small enough to feel safe but it's electric and exciting at the same time. Get them to watch Burnistoun, Limmy, Still Game and Chewing the Fat. Get their ear into the accent (and the humour) early and if you need help when you get here give us a shout. by janquadrentvincent (Sat 29th Jul 2023 11:37pm)
  • Yeah. I would advise that there is literally no point going to any kind of SEA restaurant here coming from Aus. BUT take them for some curry and they'll be stunned. Miles better here obviously. Except the cheese naan. Australia is better at that. by janquadrentvincent (Mon 31st Jul 2023 8:04am)

ScotRail accepts this and for that reason despite all the other cost cutting measures they've taken they still haven't got rid of the option to buy the ticket upon arrival. The "rant" was about someone being rude unnecessarily. So don't be rude unnecessarily. by janquadrentvincent (Wed 16th Aug 2023 11:35pm)
