  • Yeah I’ve been saving for a few year final though I had a good deposit but after having a realistic chat with a mortgage adviser everything is selling over in Glasgow. So I’ll need to put a minimum deposit to have cash to put over and do renovation later by Gecko5991 (Thu 25th Feb 2021 11:03am)
  • This unfortunately is not planned with first time buyers like myself in mind. I just bid 18% cash over a HR and was outbid. Literally unaffordable and that was the cheapest property!! by Gecko5991 (Thu 25th Feb 2021 11:02am)
  • First home fund was also my plan, adviser has said prices will simply rise and people with use that plus 5% as mortgage deposit and the rest of their deposit to put cash over. We looked at prices last year when FHF was active and it bumps up prices of 1-2beds in reasonable locations unfortunately by Gecko5991 (Thu 25th Feb 2021 11:06am)
  • Cheers! Bit of a pain but will keep it up! 👍 by Gecko5991 (Tue 2nd Mar 2021 5:29pm)
  • Cheers for that! Bit of a pain and good advice! Point certainly stands guess I’m just hoping prices don’t rise further and then I’m priced out forever! Not wishing the market to crash but if it did I’d benefit! Cheers by Gecko5991 (Tue 2nd Mar 2021 5:31pm)
  • Yeah I’d prefer not to pay over HR but it seems anywhere reasonable is going well over! by Gecko5991 (Tue 2nd Mar 2021 5:30pm)

  • It means making excuses for poor behaviour by ‘making up for it afterwards’ instead of not doing it. A logical fallacy. It’s a bit like stealing a bike then asking god for forgiveness - rather than not stealing the bike (in my non religious head that made sense). by Gecko5991 (Mon 8th Mar 2021 6:48pm)

  • So far I’ve bid on 3 flats one 18% over, one 17% over and another 13%. Out bid on first which went 35% over, second went 25% and third they just said substantially over Home report value. by Gecko5991 (Sat 20th Mar 2021 10:19pm)
  • Counter to this. When we were students 2 years ago we rented a 5 bed ‘new build’ house. Had wild parties in a family centric estate. We put on good parties at Halloween etc which entertained the kids but the rest of the time it was pretty loud. by Gecko5991 (Sun 21st Mar 2021 7:58pm)

  • The logic here - of a bomb goes off and no one gets hurt it’s okay to set bombs off. People chose to RISK others health for no reason other than one team won a ball and net game. by Gecko5991 (Thu 1st Apr 2021 11:42pm)

  • Whisky they won’t increase the price because you ‘may be a boy racer’ they will increase the price because a type of car is higher risk - one reason for being higher risk is some cars are more likely to be driven by younger, less experienced and in some cases boy racers. Source - chose not to buy a corsa and went for a 1.2 Punto due to difference in insurance cost for vehicle of same age, cost and engine size. by Gecko5991 (Thu 15th Apr 2021 12:00pm)

  • I’m presuming you mean the western (car + passenger) rather than the Argyll (passenger only). Buy them in the coop on the left hand side coming through Gourock. I’m currently travelling each weekend from Dunoon to Glasgow and had no issues - you may have to wait for a ferry on a Saturday but ferry’s are running every 15-30 mins. It’s almost half price buying them before you get on the ferry but you can pay aboard with card (no cash at the moment). For the Argyll (if you want to leave car in Gourock or travel by train) you can buy in advance from Glasgow central with train ticket or on the bait with cash or card. by Gecko5991 (Thu 10th Jun 2021 4:30pm)
  • Thank you very much for you response. We only moved last week so I don’t think we have been negligent - I’ve emailed the factor and will tell the owner when I see them. Sorry to hear you have had a lot of leaks - does that not cover negligence if it keeps happening? Did they get a plumber? Not sure why the owner said the factor told them this is a private matter ðŸĪ” by Gecko5991 (Sun 27th Jun 2021 10:18pm)
  • I asked in this subreddit as it’s the first tenement I’ve owned - with lots of tenements in Glasgow. Also first time I’ve had a factor - against lots of people on this subreddit have experience with factors. Also many on here use this factor. Thanks for the comment though and thanks everyone for the help. by Gecko5991 (Sun 27th Jun 2021 10:22pm)
  • Sell it or give it away - 1k over 2-3 years is nothing and will be well used. Certainly no point exporting £1k furniture abroad - costs would outweigh value. by Gecko5991 (Sat 3rd Jul 2021 1:17pm)
  • When we were viewing properties we tried to offer after viewing via solicitor to be told that they won’t accept offers prior to the closing date - every single one of the 6 we bid on went to a closing date, typically on arrival at viewing they would say the closing date is x. The only one that didn’t was a fixed price that had previously called through. by Gecko5991 (Tue 13th Jul 2021 11:57pm)
  • Excellent mate! Me and my girlfriend just bought in Cathcart last month - it’s excellent. by Gecko5991 (Tue 13th Jul 2021 11:55pm)
  • Exactly the advice we were given - they will take you offer and no answer until after closing date, probably hint at your offer to others who are also bidding. by Gecko5991 (Wed 14th Jul 2021 8:48pm)
  • Don’t think you have bought recently unless you were a cash buyer? I had solicitor , mortgage in principle, deposit and as a first time buyer no chain. All went to closing date and all sold 15-30% above home report. by Gecko5991 (Wed 14th Jul 2021 8:47pm)
  • That’s exactly what my solicitors done and eventually we bought a place just over a month ago. Always note interest because the closing date on one changed! by Gecko5991 (Wed 14th Jul 2021 9:59pm)
  • Ahh that makes sense - market has heated up a bit. One of the properties I viewed sold 37% over homer report value and almost 50% over the offers over value. 28 bidders on closing date, I wasn’t even. In the top 10 offering 30k over - place didn’t even have central heating and its electrical switches were all Bakelite - in some ways it’s lucky I didn’t get it. 😂 by Gecko5991 (Wed 14th Jul 2021 9:58pm)

  • I paid £1400 two months ago - there is additional fees for using Lifetime ISA or help to buy ISA. Based on my experience I use Gilson and Gray - I WILL NEVER USE THEM AGAIN. by Gecko5991 (Wed 28th Jul 2021 5:27pm)
  • Tenement flats in particular are going wildly over at the moment. We bought a couple months ago and we’re lucky to buy one in Cathcart. This is some of the previous bids. Property one: Battlefield, offers over £99k, HR £100k. My offer 118k sold for over £135k. (Required major renovation including rewrire, central heating, bathroom, kitchen and windows). Property two: Cathcart, offers over £90k, HR £100k. My Offer £119.5k sold for £130k+ (Required few walls moved, rewire or new consumer unit, new bathroom and kitchen. Property there: Paisley, offers over £114k, HR £120k. My offer £131k sold for £138.5k (fully renovated to a high standard). I would never put an early bid in - my solicitor advised against this. They will take your offer but not reply until after closing and you offer may be hinted at to other bidders. Speak to a solicitor about this. by Gecko5991 (Sat 31st Jul 2021 8:17am)
  • We just bought in the Southside - to be honest the price is too high. With a HR of 200k you would be looking at 220-230k sale price. For 200k you can look at decent tenement flats in Shawlands, Mount Florida, Battlefield. Non-tenements are worth significantly less - look at tantallon towers, excellent location, reasonable size but 30-40% less than a tenement on the same street. by Gecko5991 (Sun 1st Aug 2021 9:39pm)
  • Yeah it seems like the surveyor should know best! My dad also thought it was funny I would prefer a tenement over a semi - detached in a similar area. However there is buyers a friend of mine bought a relatively new build on location and price - he wasn’t bothered about the style or age of the building. All the best with the sale :) by Gecko5991 (Mon 2nd Aug 2021 9:00am)
  • Bloc - the daily deals are great, but even just the normal prices are good. Recommend the steak and peppercorn sauce. Paesanno - Good, cheap, sit in pizza. Sugo - same as above but pasta. Tuk tuk - chain on Sauchiehall st. Good Indian food - also on in Edinburgh that’s great too. Bier Halle - 241 pizza yum. You can also use 5pm, Groupon, wowcher etc to get deals on meals and cocktails cheaply. by Gecko5991 (Thu 5th Aug 2021 2:08pm)

  • Minor issues are often tidied up before the home report is complete - you get more for you flat if you have no issues on HR. If that’s not the case, why have they not done it? Lack of money or signs of larger problem? by Gecko5991 (Thu 30th Sep 2021 12:01pm)

  • I would say that budget is unfortunately to tight, even in a flat share. My rent used to be 475 in a flat of 3. On top of that you have gas and leccy (£60) Internet (£30), council tax (90-160), food (£120-200). Obviously these prices can go up and down depending where you live but I don’t think they are particularly excessive. by Gecko5991 (Mon 1st Nov 2021 11:25pm)
  • Just to clarify that was £475 each in rent alone by Gecko5991 (Tue 2nd Nov 2021 12:17pm)
  • Yeah although I’m still confused to why they think they can charge for a service then now deliver it 😂. Basically saying yeah we charge for bins but it’s nothing to do with us! by Gecko5991 (Wed 24th Nov 2021 11:15pm)
  • Just an update - phoned today said I tried to put a complaint in yesterday but phones closed at 1pm. She said I can’t put a complaint in as the bins are meant to be collected tomorrow so I would have to see if they are collected. I explained my complaint was paying for a service and not receiving it - I.e tax for bins. She said it’s only a tiny proportion of my council tax. Honestly just want the service I pay for and living in a tenement means it’s not just my waste 😂 I’ve tried so hard to recycle and use glass and clothing banks since moving but this means it’s stuff it in anywhere that fits. by Gecko5991 (Thu 25th Nov 2021 11:13am)
  • Phone this morning to complain - told I can’t complain as they might collect them tomorrow. Also complaints line shuts at lunch time 😂 by Gecko5991 (Thu 25th Nov 2021 11:19am)
  • Absolutely- I support union action but I pay the council my tax to collect the bins. by Gecko5991 (Thu 25th Nov 2021 11:22am)

  • I have full sympathy for the strike - but I pay my council tax to the council they should provide services even if they need to outsource and it costs them more. I presume these isssues are costed into council tax. by Gecko5991 (Thu 25th Nov 2021 11:20am)
  • It’s great - cheap, good food, music and comedy nights plenty, good transport links although public transport is expensive by train, decent cinemas too. by Gecko5991 (Thu 25th Nov 2021 11:24am)
  • Worst comes to worst she says no you say you were wasted and found the ring in the toilets. by Gecko5991 (Thu 25th Nov 2021 11:38am)
  • Yep - our close lock is just a standard nightlatch. Don’t know if the are meant to have that function on shared locks! I’ve just put a new one on my door with a smart lock and the lock function makes sense in my own flat only an issue on a communal door! by Gecko5991 (Fri 3rd Dec 2021 12:07am)
  • We could be in the same block 😂😂😂 Honestly a cracking set of flats if you are and I’ve never been locked out but across and up from me have after work and nights out which is a shame. by Gecko5991 (Fri 3rd Dec 2021 1:12am)
  • Nah the lock works as it should Down is open / operate with key. Up is lock / hold open - not able to open with key Same as my own night latch - I think they have used a typical household lock 😂😂 by Gecko5991 (Fri 3rd Dec 2021 1:10am)
  • On the actual lock itself? There is a button you can push up and lock on most nightlatches by Gecko5991 (Fri 3rd Dec 2021 9:28am)
  • I’m not sure if that was a lucky guess or not 😂 by Gecko5991 (Fri 3rd Dec 2021 3:34pm)
  • 1) Not sure who is doing it - could be a couple of people (the ones who I’ve never seen locked out). 2) I’ve never been locked out so not at the shouting stage 3) I live here and own and don’t want to turn it into a war. Everything else is great. 4) A communal lock should not be able to do this. Rather than playing a messed up game of cluedo I’ll just get the factor to replace it. by Gecko5991 (Fri 3rd Dec 2021 3:31pm)
  • Where abouts in Glasgow are you? This is beyond weird 😂 by Gecko5991 (Fri 3rd Dec 2021 3:49pm)

  • Yep - I had two packages that never arrived the when I contacted them to say it had been. A few weeks they sent a replacement and the courier said they lost the second packages too! Not RM but I think all postage is just mad with Xmas. by Gecko5991 (Fri 10th Dec 2021 4:54pm)
  • Get a mesh wifi system. We have virgin fibre which is great in the living room (where the box is) but tenement walls stop signal to back rooms. Got a TP-Link Deco S4 last month. It’s perfect - full speed everywhere in the flat range including the close and garden! We can now stream 4k and game in spare room with no issue. Paid £100 - just wish I done this sooner! by Gecko5991 (Thu 16th Dec 2021 4:12pm)
  • There is a community garden on Old Castle Road in Cathcart. It’s right beside the station so less than a minutes walk. They have signs up about how to get involved and learning events in normal summers. by Gecko5991 (Thu 16th Dec 2021 4:10pm)
  • Honestly, please don’t do that to your neighbour. Even in modern new builds the weight of someone bounding along will cause significant noise. We just moved into a tenement and still getting used to how much noise passes from essentials like washing machines and walking about. Perhaps a solution is to try it out once then ask neighbours? But a lot of effort to carry a treadmill up to a top floor flat. by Gecko5991 (Tue 21st Dec 2021 11:29pm)

  • We just bought a flat in Cathcart for just under that budget - excellent plaice to live and great transport links! 10mins on train to town but we not mainly go out in Southside! by Gecko5991 (Tue 4th Jan 2022 1:48pm)
  • Could you let me know what the costs are like? My girlfriend would really like to do this but last time we looked we could not justify the additional cost (despite having our bottles). by Gecko5991 (Tue 4th Jan 2022 2:17pm)
  • Any idea what this would cost? I know things are tight for everyone so I don’t see many people being in favour as it’s more cosmetic maintenance by Gecko5991 (Thu 6th Jan 2022 2:00pm)
  • Thanks for the information! Will speak to factor in spring and see what they say. It would save me a lot of effort and time getting people to do it but I understand others will think it doesn’t need done! by Gecko5991 (Thu 6th Jan 2022 2:52pm)
  • Thanks for the info - will approach the factor and see what they say! To be honest I’d be happy paying £200 and the close look great for 5 years. by Gecko5991 (Thu 6th Jan 2022 2:51pm)
  • I’d recommend indigo square if they cover your area - we have had them for a year since we bought and they are excellent. We have had several large repairs which they have negotiated with the insurance company for us. by Gecko5991 (Tue 18th Jan 2022 5:52pm)
  • The Golden Chip in Cathcart - we found they did pizza a few months ago and we have had it a few too many times now. Comes with a homemade garlic sauce and the base is like sourdough with lots of flavour. One of the main things to consider is how close is wherever you order to you. For us the golden chip in less than a mile away so it arrives burning hot! by Gecko5991 (Sat 22nd Jan 2022 12:41pm)

  • Avoid Gilson Grey. We used them and they were terrible - delayed the purchase as they couldn’t keep on top of different paperwork. As first time buyers the specific solicitor we had was not familiar with the Lifetime ISA scheme - despite us paying a fee for their ‘expertise’ to use this with our purchase. The initial guy who dealt with our offers etc was great but you get moved to someone else to do the conveyancing and she was not very good. Felt like I was chasing them to get things done within the agreed timeframe and paying for the pleasure. by Gecko5991 (Wed 26th Jan 2022 4:39pm)

  • Good it’s annoying when people leave bikes in closes. We got a letter from our factor a while ago informing us of changes to our communal buildings policy - that could be invalidated if the exits are blocked in any way. by Gecko5991 (Fri 6th May 2022 9:41pm)
  • We bought a flat about an Indian takeaway and it’s been great - meant we could get a bigger flat for our money and we sued Halifax for the mortgage. Obviously the downside is if they don’t have proper extraction, unusual opening times etc. fortunately we live on a residential street so it’s closed around 10.30 and no smell at all. Worth going to see if it’s mainly a sit in restaurant or a ‘cheap city takeaway’. I suspect that’s where the big differences will be found. by Gecko5991 (Mon 9th May 2022 2:03pm)
  • The other benefit we get is total factor bill (maintenance, repairs, insurance etc is divided by 24. Flat owners pay 1/24th and commercial properties below pay the rest. We are in a block of 9 above 3 shops so that means the shops cover 5 shares each. Not sure if it’s something special in our deeds etc. Happy to answer any other questions. • That’s interesting. I recently got a fine for not paying LBTT (no tax due as value was below threshold just form required return). I paid a specific fee for GG to do it. When I phoned they said that solicitor had moved on and several others were in same position. To be fair they paid the fine. Earlier in the process we were delayed as solicitor did not know different between HTB ISA and Lifetime ISA (again I paid an itemised fee to use this). Ending up causing delays which simply not acceptable when you pay the money 😂 Initial paper work had wrong property, wrong price and wrong seller details - which my mortgage advisor was surprised I was buying at £2 mil house as a FTB ðŸĪĢ She never answered emails or phone - and would provide vague replies like ‘Move in date might be between Monday and Friday next week’. 🙃 It probably was a dodgy solicitor rather than the whole firm but still I wouldn’t risk it again. I was also a first time buyer so perhaps my expectations were higher. by Gecko5991 (Wed 18th May 2022 2:35pm)
  • Our solicitor was S. M. Either way I just felt that you are paying a professional level fee and expect a competent professional service. Hopefully they sort it out to save others the stress. 😀 by Gecko5991 (Wed 18th May 2022 3:11pm)
  • I’d 100% agree. At the weekend we had grandparents visiting and need to use taxis to get between Cathcart and Central. We booked 3 times over the weekend with different firms. It was ridiculous- not one turned up on time, two didn’t show at all and when we called they said no taxis available. The third sent confirmation text, and 5 mins before scheduled arrival a cancellation text. When we first moved to Glasgow we thought it’s going to be great getting to airport but now I would not rely on taxis for flights or medical appointments. by Gecko5991 (Thu 19th May 2022 10:54am)

  • Lots of people can’t use it. Young, old, overweight, underweight, sight impaired, those drinking alcohol, those carrying shopping, those with kids, those with dogs, those heading more than 15 min cycle, those living on outskirts. Poor weather half the year. No lights or cycle lanes in most places. I understand the thinking but without a staged transition it’s silly to think the average person in Glasgow can cycle from the Southside to town in a reasonable amount of time. Never mind without the infrastructure. The future’s green but trains are part of that. by Gecko5991 (Thu 19th May 2022 11:41am)
  • I think it makes it harder - other public services like social work have not received any pay rise to match inflation for decades. How do you justify one but not the other? by Gecko5991 (Thu 19th May 2022 12:12pm)
  • I’m fully in agreement! However I think that some groups are certainly courted more like teachers and NHS (I work in Education). Social work and community mental health services haven’t ever seen the rises we have. I think that’s more to do with who the publics perception of who uses what services and councils value of them. by Gecko5991 (Thu 19th May 2022 12:43pm)

  • Average salary is around £38k (not the mode but reasonable estimate). I’d say if you earn above 40k you are in price middle class territory. Two incomes in one house could reduce the individual amount needed. Most folk (the mode) are on well below the average - so you could say 28k+ is seeping into middle class. Two reasonable incomes, disposable income, a detached house, two roadworthy cars and ‘choosing’ to work part time are probably better indicators. by Gecko5991 (Mon 23rd May 2022 7:22pm)

I’m happy to pay for things like this but can’t afford to pay for the whole close to get re-done. Maybe if I do that and put plants in garden people will want to invest a wee bit.. It’s hard though we are fortunate to both be working and in secure jobs. I know other people are struggling right now so paint is the least of their concerns. by Gecko5991 (Fri 27th May 2022 9:22am)

I love them and would like to sit on my step and have a coffee there on a Sunday morning or wine on a Friday afternoon in the sun. Even if I had the money to make that work i probably wouldn’t do it as we bought a flat in Cathcart and it’s worked out great for transport, socialising and the extra cash we can use for exploring and travel. Feel like I’d be think g of retiring early if I had a QP drive flat instead 😂 by Gecko5991 (Mon 30th May 2022 2:28pm)

  • I asked this question about 8 months ago - to rip out and replace my tenement bathroom. Ended up getting a few quotes and found an excellent firm. I duopolies my own materials using bathroom mountain and tile mountain which Fraser (the owner) advised on and suggested ways of making the most of the space. Done an excellent job for a fair prices and overcame all the quirks of tenements and uneven walls ðŸĪĢ I went full tile and it looks great. 5 year labour guarantee, 1 year check up and boiler serviced at the same time. We’ve had it for 9 months so far and no issues. If you want to looking them up on Instagram Fraser Hoehle / NRG Scotland. Also if you message me I can try send you my before and after photos and answer any questions. by Gecko5991 (Mon 4th Jul 2022 12:54am)
  • Yeah the tiktok guy! We had 4 quote; Fraser was in the middle but had many examples of his work. Asked what I wanted from the space and how we could achieve that. One of them only done wet wall and another said he probably couldn’t get a low profile shower tray down so suggest a bath (I was changing from bath to shower!). Also when we looked at costs, getting a high end finish which would add value was not much more than basic wet wall and electric shower. We got full tile floor and walls, new ceiling and lights, black brass fittings and niche with lighting, designer radiator. 5 year labour guarantee. Also we wanted to book in advance and the work to happen between two dates (as we were away visiting family). Came back tidy bathroom and all cleaned up behind him. 2 others we asked to quote never turned up and one guy never sent the quote cost (after asking 3 times). Signing off now as that’s the sales pitch ðŸĪĢI’d 100% recommend him. by Gecko5991 (Mon 4th Jul 2022 4:37pm)

  • Thanks for the response! I was actually thinking of using a liquid sander or sugar soap to clean it - then undercoat - light sand - first coat of paint - light sand final coat? Do you think that’s over kill? Don’t need any filling done just tape the glass panels. I used a oil based gloss on my personal front door (lime green) it was good but it took a few goes to ensure no runs etc. Also on paint any recommendations as I was planning on using Valspar Exterior Wood and Metal Paint? Probably Satin finish. We used the gloss and interior paint from valspar/BnQ to match a Graham and Brown / farrow colours pretty well. Thanks very much! by Gecko5991 (Fri 15th Jul 2022 9:17pm)

  • Increase taxes for those above the higher rate threshold progressively, increase public sector pay to match inflation, use our resources e.g the army, police and navy to stop tax evasion - seize assets of those who do not pay their share. Tax second homes more dependant in value. Amazon ware houses seized until they pay a fair amount of tax. Increase state benefits and end pay later and high interest loans and replace with state backed loans at fair rates. Chase wealthy tax evaders for a fair rates of tax and freeze assets of those using offshore tax evasion methods. Greater taxes on gains from stocks and shares. Reduced threshold for tax on ISA accounts over 1 million. Unfortunately they will not do any of this as they directly benefit from the opposite of normal people. Look at the recent Panama papers, the royal family is using these forms to avoid paying towards the state (also scrap the monarchy for equality). by Gecko5991 (Tue 9th Aug 2022 10:43am)
  • Yep. I’m a socialist / communist. 1) I think we should become independent - leave England to vote against themselves. 2) In the mean time government borrow money based on a % of what will be retrieved over the next decade from the new tax evasion reduction plan. Implement next week focusing on Amazon, Google and Facebook. Add additional layer to multimillion property sales until regulator checks the source of funding to stop people selling UK assists before they are caught. by Gecko5991 (Tue 9th Aug 2022 11:09am)
  • We bought last year - I’d just remember when you buy and your fixed mortgage ends you need to remortgage. Current situation looks like next year when I remortgage it will be more per month due to interest but still affordable. For people who really stretched on their first property this may tip them over the affordability and mean they need to sell. by Gecko5991 (Tue 9th Aug 2022 4:08pm)
  • I’ve got a mixed view as an occasional user; - I enjoy using nicotine to relax and socialise. The disposable nature means I can pick one up on a Friday night instead of my old cigarette habit (smoked daily for a few years 6 years or so ago). Just bin it at the end of the night but a dedicated recycling would be preferred. - The branding and marketing is ridiculous and clearly targeted at a young audience. They are on open display in most corner shops. - I would restrict sales to supermarket chains, coop locals etc and have them behind counter in plain packaging with warnings and challenge 25 in operation. - Are police supposed to approach children using restricted substances? I seen to remember them approaching me when I was clearly under 16 about cigarettes etc. - Taxation- the elf bar I used was equivalent to 60 cigarettes that should be at least £10 not £5 and still be cheaper than smoking as an incentive. - companies should be responsible for recycling with severe tax penalties for failure to comply like the bottle return in European countries. by Gecko5991 (Tue 9th Aug 2022 4:25pm)

  • Have done and will continue to do so! by Gecko5991 (Mon 5th Sep 2022 2:33pm)
  • Not sure who your factor is but we have had this and currently have it again. 1) We contact our factor 2) They send letter to everyone asking them to remove stuff 3) They arrange collection and split cost between owners Not ideal but that’s how it’s down via our factor. by Gecko5991 (Mon 5th Sep 2022 2:41pm)
  • For 2 people £70 a week including breakfast, lunch and dinner. Actually the shop lasts around 9 days as we always get a few extra meals. by Gecko5991 (Mon 5th Sep 2022 2:48pm)
  • Yep and there would need to be fair compensation for workers on night trains (and all trains!). Considering how many people use taxis and Ubers as there is no alternative I reckon the money is definitely there! Maybe no night trains mid week for maintenance but Friday and Saturday trains by Gecko5991 (Mon 5th Sep 2022 3:00pm)
  • Yep - I also think owners and renters should take responsibility for the pavement outside their home and the close entrance. However practically organising people to do a share is almost impossible even when it comes to communal repairs. We have had one bastard holding out £80 for a new wall (insurance agreed to pay 85%). New wall would be almost 15k but some people have no sense. by Gecko5991 (Wed 21st Sep 2022 12:47pm)
  • At 45K (comfortable) I could start to work less and do more of what I enjoy (cheap travel, DIY, gardening). At 55k (ideal) I could start more expensive hobbies that I’d like to do such as Marine fishkeeping and I’d be able to look at building a small house in the future. At 65k - (dream) I’d probably drop a full day a week and have a 3 day weekend to do more of these things. I’d maybe be able to actually build a small house and grow a wee woodland. Probably be able to retire earlier too. This would assume my partner is earning around 40k and between us we would be comfortable. Not that I’ve through about this at all…. by Gecko5991 (Mon 10th Oct 2022 1:27pm)
  • Damn! If I’d seen this earlier! by Gecko5991 (Mon 10th Oct 2022 5:44pm)
  • Not really - I earn a basic wage so can’t afford to consistently tip (nor do I regularly eat out to be fair). If we go out as part of a large group we leave a tip as we will be more demanding on the server. When I earned minimum wage in fast food I never got any tips and would often do 12 hour shifts on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays finishing at 4-5am. Serving many hundreds of customers each shift in a hot kitchen. Naff pay and naff conditions as a student. Even then that was on my employer to improve pay and conditions not the customers. by Gecko5991 (Tue 18th Oct 2022 12:20pm)

  • Thanks - bit of a pain but not much else we can do. by Gecko5991 (Wed 19th Oct 2022 4:13pm)
  • Yep I’d be up for this if we ge true money back. But naff that it’s a shop that is being rented out and they won’t cough up. by Gecko5991 (Wed 19th Oct 2022 4:15pm)
  • Yep that’s what I mean - they are getting my rental income and still don’t pay their share. by Gecko5991 (Thu 20th Oct 2022 12:48am)
  • Yep I think they have a 3 share (£82x3). Madness that they are renting the property out but won’t pay for minor maintenance by Gecko5991 (Thu 20th Oct 2022 1:00pm)
  • There was a guy on the ‘shawlands or mount Florida community page’ - said he’s done it and people had asked about donation etc. said he was using electronic ignition for all the devices to have a set pace. Pretty cool! by Gecko5991 (Wed 9th Nov 2022 6:18pm)
  • The biggest factor is the rent freeze? Surely that means people are staying in their houses which they would have been forced out of? I suppose there would be more empty properties but more people needing houses exacerbating the same frantic market. The problem is there is not enough houses built over generations and that space to build within Glasgow is tight. The city needs to expand outwards and have transport that expands with it. by Gecko5991 (Sun 20th Nov 2022 3:40pm)
  • I’d contact the garage and explain the situation and see what they advise. by Gecko5991 (Sun 4th Dec 2022 5:26pm)
  • First treat mould with mild and mildew spray - you can decant into a tub and paint this on with a paint brush. If you are going away for a weekend over Christmas - it could be a great time to do this. Next get some airflow - open windows in flat and bathroom so air is circulating through one window to the others. Not ideal in this weather. The real solution is to get a plumber and electrician to fit an extractor fan. This will require a core being drilled (around £150) and a electric fitting a fan and might be able to run a spur from ceiling light (meaning both come on at same time). We done this when re doing the whole bathroom and no just leave fan on for 20 mins after a shower to ensure it’s properly dry. by Gecko5991 (Thu 8th Dec 2022 12:21am)
  • Use a mould and mildew spray. Spray and wipe excess with m&m or a moderate bleach solution. Then I’d recommend decanting into a tub and painting it on thick with a paint brush. After painting soliton on. Get some air flow - open as many windows as you can on dry day (doesn’t need to be warm). Might be worth doing on a day you can be out all day or away for weekend if it’s cold. Ultimately get the fan fixed - shouldn’t cost too much to replace but the issue will be finding a sparky. by Gecko5991 (Thu 8th Dec 2022 12:25am)
  • Don’t have any info but worth giving them a call - staff will be in before it opens 😄 by Gecko5991 (Fri 9th Dec 2022 12:23pm)
  • Wouldn’t hang about with people using either word. Pretty sure I’d be immediately fired if I used either at work. Some people just like to hate others, kinda sad for adults to be doing this openly. by Gecko5991 (Fri 9th Dec 2022 12:26pm)
  • 70-80 quid a week for our shop (usually lasts 8-9days so averages lower over the year). This includes all cleaning supplies, toiletries and the odd bottle of wine etc. we do an online shop with ASDA and home delivery using a delivery pass (£35 a year). Means I don’t need to spend time doing the shop and helps us plan our meals better. Probably get 6 hours of my life back each month from this - shopping arrives and is put away in 5 mins while the kettle is on. Occasionally visit lidl doing a big shop to stock up on boxes of cereal, micro rice, pasta, pesto etc. This helps reduce cost of regular shops. Meals like steak pie, quiche, spaghetti, pesto pasta, lunches like soup and sandwiches etc. This is for 2 adults. by Gecko5991 (Mon 12th Dec 2022 1:20pm)
  • Aww fuck - was just about to suggest that and sort myself with a visit there. That was my parent’s favourite breakfast after a night out. by Gecko5991 (Mon 19th Dec 2022 12:18am)
  • Interesting take - most of my family have some issue from trades including bad backs, injury’s by Gecko5991 (Tue 3rd Jan 2023 10:32pm)
  • Yeah but also working with other people on site. My dads back has improved since he gave up plumbing 20 years ago but still has days unable to leave bed due to another persons mistake on site. Friends partner is missing several fingers due to a similar accident. Also in terms of salary most trades don’t pay well unless you work for yourself and often combined laughable pensions, if they even exist. This is particularly true if comparing to an inflation linked defined benefit pension such as NHS or local government. by Gecko5991 (Wed 4th Jan 2023 6:35pm)
  • The NHS still has one of the best defined benefit pensions and the local government (not civil service) have the LGPS. Both are some of the best pensions you can get and inflation linked. OP says he already works for NHS. by Gecko5991 (Wed 4th Jan 2023 11:21pm)
  • Football. Find it hard to understand football is actually more important to many people than making Glasgow a nice place to live. Many people act like goons when the X team is on and think they have the right to cause a mess, which we then fix using taxes. Had an old guy in football top make a noise at me walking down battlefield to get food few weeks back. I didn’t know why until I asked my mate: the Rangers Cup game was on (they weren't even playing their rival) and I was wearing a green waterproof jacket as it was raining.  TBH  - just a moan as I'm oblivious to the football timetable and most of the time it's fine.   by Gecko5991 (Wed 25th Jan 2023 1:37pm)
  • What does that even mean? Boot the ball about the field and smile. by Gecko5991 (Wed 25th Jan 2023 2:48pm)
  • Yeah I just feel secondhand embarrassment seeing football tops on holiday. Sad as it’s probably all linked into evolutionary psychology and group thinking for safety. All for enjoying a couple hours and pints but then returning to reality and enjoying other things. No need to evolve into a hate spewing mutant. by Gecko5991 (Wed 25th Jan 2023 2:47pm)

  • Thanks - it comes up with a company and when you Google the company it was dissolved 😂 NAME COMMERCIALS LTD. is a Private Limited Company from GLASGOW SCOTLAND and has the status: Dissolved - no longer trading. by Gecko5991 (Mon 6th Feb 2023 4:26pm)
  • We are trying that - the gutters could do this but there is no guarantee they will be able to claim missing share and need to get everyone to pay for this first 😅 by Gecko5991 (Mon 6th Feb 2023 4:52pm)
  • Usually it means Cocaine - typically lower quality cocaine. I’ve also heard people using gear in reference to heroin / the supplies required to prepare heroin. The ‘gear’ meaning the kit needed. More recently it’s been used to describe a range of powdered drugs particularly Ketamine. by Gecko5991 (Fri 10th Feb 2023 12:54pm)

  • Yep. It’s weird looking back on places that you had important parts of your life in or lived for a period. A student Flat I had in Stirling for a number of years is the same. I also like that flats in my head stay belonging to people - e.g walking past and say that’s Xs flat even though that haven’t lived there for 5 years 😂 by Gecko5991 (Fri 17th Feb 2023 10:48am)
  • People shit on it but I love Glasgow. Just miserable shites with fuck all else to do. Plenty of good food, good nights out, good days out. Definitely give it a visit! by Gecko5991 (Thu 9th Mar 2023 11:43pm)
  • Half battered pizza and chips - or pizza crunch as my mates call it. Google it - taste great not good for you though. Common foods that people actually eat not much different that everywhere else. Usual restaurants serve burgers, pizza, fried chicken and steaks etc. Scottish food that I like includes Bells pies, potato scone in a roll with HP or daddies brown sauce. Feel like the battered mars bar thing is a myth. If you do visit there is a restaurant in Falkirk called Christie’s that does Scottish tapas and I was very pleased with our meal there. by Gecko5991 (Fri 10th Mar 2023 12:44am)
  • I’m also a relatively new owner and I was surprised at the same issue regarding water ingress. Unfortunately, other posters are right and it is your responsibility to claim on insurance if needed (and pay excess). by Gecko5991 (Tue 14th Mar 2023 2:30pm)
  • Nae baking in the room. by Gecko5991 (Tue 14th Mar 2023 2:37pm)
  • Yeah I’m thinking this seems rather lavish - maybe I need to go out more! by Gecko5991 (Tue 14th Mar 2023 2:36pm)
  • Eh? Am I missing something or is eating out, takeaway and a couple nights drinking not living quite lavish? Buying clothes every month? Baking on the side. I get you can do it on the cheap but my partner and I go out maybe 1-2x a month and notice the cost even with 2 ‘good’ salaries. I’d say if you are renting solo and want to do that £30k at a minimum if you cut back a bit. by Gecko5991 (Tue 14th Mar 2023 2:36pm)
  • I wonder if this is the same woman we had at the paolo nutini gig (50s with son in his 20s). Kept pushing the 3 women I was with so I stood that side and she kept trying to elbow me along with the ‘so rude, this man is pushing me’. Eventually told her to fuck off and her son apologised saying she had drunk too much. Also happened years ago at Hampden from Springsteen - 3 women asking us not to sing while he played born to run 😂 Normally just a quick no sorts it. Although I do wish they would ban phones at gigs with a mad laser. by Gecko5991 (Fri 14th Apr 2023 5:44pm)

  • I’d like to know this too - seems like you need to be all over Facebook, ticketmaster, skiffle and gigs in Scotland as there is so many platforms. Missed quite a few things as I found out too late - particularly comedy nights in pubs by Gecko5991 (Tue 25th Apr 2023 2:01pm)
  • Yep used to be £17.50 and £32.50 and now it’s seems even small acts are £30 and large bands £60-80 Paolo nutini was £60 Springsteen £110 From the Jam £35 Few gigs I’ve been to in Kjng tuts have gone from £8 and I’d give it a go to £15-20+. by Gecko5991 (Thu 1st Jun 2023 10:51pm)

  • Mashed mango? by Gecko5991 (Fri 16th Jun 2023 12:12am)
  • Really good actually - like a normal mango’s mixed with cream sweeter and less ‘sharp’. More mellow like peach compared to normal and less zing. Interesting! Glad I’ve tried them and will do it annually. by Gecko5991 (Fri 16th Jun 2023 12:12am)
  • Load of nonsense- get them out the communal close and into their private flat. by Gecko5991 (Thu 29th Jun 2023 12:48am)
  • Get cheap chains and fuck his bikes with them. by Gecko5991 (Thu 29th Jun 2023 12:47am)
  • This is the solution. Publicly owned trains running a reduced service throughout the night. Normally costs £25 quid to get back from town at 3am. If a special single at 3am was £8 I’d pay it. Even if there is two sharing it makes sense and is more convenient. Many cities have night trains and plan maintenance around this (I.e deliver the service around the sales). by Gecko5991 (Mon 17th Jul 2023 10:36am)
  • There tenements all over the place - get the train form Glasgow Central to Gourock and you will pass many. There’s even a tenement block left in Dunoon. by Gecko5991 (Mon 24th Jul 2023 3:25pm)
  • Bloc on Hope Street - alternative bar with good and cheap food. Although people will be drinking if you want to specifically avoid that? by Gecko5991 (Mon 14th Aug 2023 1:12am)
  • Yep I agree it’s often not from malice but it will still impact on people either way. It’s the same way certain disabilities and learning conditions are talked about in slang without meaning offence. I always found that word for a takeaway as shocking even when I was younger. by Gecko5991 (Tue 15th Aug 2023 10:34pm)
  • Yep we had a few of these companies come and quote before we found our plumber. One guy brought a tap to show the quality of their standard kit - this thing must have had plastic somewhere as it was so lightweight. Ended up going with the tiktok bathroom guy and he done a great job still cost more around 5.6k all in but fully striped, tiled, moved wastes etc. He helped us pick different bits online to cut the costs and 2 years on no issues. He now does all the plumbing jobs we have boiler service, new kitchen sink etc. Glad I never went with the wet wall guys. by Gecko5991 (Tue 15th Aug 2023 11:37pm)
  • I always found this odd - people were aiming for 250+ despite 120 being a suitable does for most adult males for MDMD, MDA etc. Either bad gear or no idea ðŸĪ·‍♂ïļ. by Gecko5991 (Wed 16th Aug 2023 12:02am)
  • I wouldn’t buy a non factored property. We bought our flat with a factor - who have been okay, you will still need to chase them to get works completed but they have a phone number and an office. If you self factor you are very reliant on current and future owners (include absentee landlords) being reasonable and that is certainly not guaranteed. Another issue that will crop up is what individuals deem to be important. For me it is reasonable to maintain and take preventative action - like painting the front door, removing trees close to property etc. I’ve found other owners don’t have the same codes of preventing costs and are reluctant to pay when issues spiral into more expensive repairs or replacement. Owners will always be an issue but if you have a factor they take some of the work (like insuring adequate insurance) and can put pressure on non payment. Although this is of course a service and they earn a cut. Another thing is the difference between factors - our friends property is factored by H&P an their service is hopeless and much more expensive. by Gecko5991 (Sun 27th Aug 2023 5:40pm)
  • Yep had it a few weeks back for the high court - I actually wouldn’t mind attending and seeing how the systems work. Every time I’ve called it’s phone again tomorrow for a week then not required! Was also called to give evidence years ago and the same thing happened endless letters and rescheduled dates then nothing. by Gecko5991 (Wed 30th Aug 2023 11:54am)
  • Also moved to Glasgow and find it fascinating that such nuisance and bigotry is allowed openly. It’s like a weird tribalism linked to religion - but no one seems to really believe the religion bit anymore just likes the hateful part. Not really sure why we haven’t out evolved this yet. by Gecko5991 (Thu 7th Sep 2023 11:37am)
  • Usually around 11 for me in Cathcart - today it was 4pm. by Gecko5991 (Wed 13th Sep 2023 8:38pm)
  • I think it should be a set percentage of the recent property value - e.g 1% of something £130k = 1300 and 1% of something work 1.2mil = 12000. The current system is based on historic prices and doesn’t reflect the extreme rises in certain properties. Currently I pay £1550 and people at the top pay a maximum of £4677.13. There is no relation to actual priority value and the amount of tax. by Gecko5991 (Sat 23rd Sep 2023 4:46pm)
  • Absolutely - we need to KEEP closing new loopholes as they emerge. Current system is unfair on PAYE employees. I think most people don’t know enough about the tax system otherwise we would have mass revolts. There absolutely is enough wealth for everyone to have a good quality of life and decent public services. The issue is people at the top don’t pay their fair share. by Gecko5991 (Sat 23rd Sep 2023 7:33pm)
  • The alternative is not an equitable approach it’s not even a graded taxation with multipliers (on reflection there should be multipliers). by Gecko5991 (Sat 23rd Sep 2023 7:31pm)
  • If people don’t want to pay a fair share of taxation and that results in them leaving then yes. Those sectors can be filled by people who are willing to contribute. Same for Google and Amazon - don’t allow them to trade unless they are willing to pay fair share (and pay staff fairly). Someone else can use that gap in the market to trade and pay tax. by Gecko5991 (Sat 23rd Sep 2023 7:30pm)
  • I suppose if we done that the flip argument would be they are more open to corruption. Just want people to pay their fair share and look after each other. 😂 by Gecko5991 (Sat 23rd Sep 2023 7:56pm)
  • Why? They have assets that have considerable value - in the case of property rises it’s not through hard work. People younger than me have lived though multiple financial crashes and wages in real terms have stagnated. Property values maintain an unequal society. I say this as someone who owns a flat. by Gecko5991 (Sun 24th Sep 2023 11:36am)
  • So encourage people to hold non cash assets so they can’t be taxed? Nothing about age - people of all ages will have expensive properties. by Gecko5991 (Sun 24th Sep 2023 4:33pm)
  • People who own a 400k house are wealthy. Their wealth is in an asset. This is not about class - it’s about assets. The current system disproportionately taxes lower value properties. Same should be done to assets held in stocks and shares. People who rent are even more disproportionately paying tax for an asset they do not own which is likely gaining value. Look at the GCC bandings - they may not actually pay more unless their band is below 1% of the value. by Gecko5991 (Sun 24th Sep 2023 6:03pm)
  • Put cheap locks on the wheels - usually get the message after that. by Gecko5991 (Sun 24th Sep 2023 6:12pm)

  • Was paying £56 for an hour and half each lesson for partner. It’s crazy! Not sure how young people are meant to afford this (and have lower minimum wage) yet still need it for work. One lesson would have been my full days pay when I was 22. by Gecko5991 (Mon 4th Dec 2023 12:38pm)
  • Yep it could be worth looking at an intensive course as they seem more reasonable with increased price of individual lessons. It’s a shame because I don’t think the intensive courses teach you as well but will get you through the test. Main thing to remember is you really start learning when you pass, take it slow, continue to go out with experienced drivers etc. by Gecko5991 (Wed 6th Dec 2023 6:26pm)
