  • there are very few 3 bed tenements in thornwood. the sandstone tenements are mainly 4 apartment, so technically 1 bedroom but sometimes converted into 2 bed with a kitchenette. 3 bed flats in Thornwood would be usually new builds or 1950s- ex council flats. the postwar council flats are in the 150k range. some are lovely with balconies etc. by smellmafishfinger (Sat 4th Jul 2020 9:51pm)

  • so you would bisect one of the most important green walk/cycleways, causing pollution, noise, nuisance to homes and businesses, at a cost of millions, for a rail connection no-one needs, to save the planet. by smellmafishfinger (Fri 14th Aug 2020 6:37pm)
  • that's obviously never going to be either cost effective or popular, and would die a death like the original line. but while we're in the land of infrastucture pipe dreams, let's turn the M8 back into a canal and live on houseboats. by smellmafishfinger (Fri 14th Aug 2020 10:28pm)
  • Yes, you're right. And your pals too. Clearly, millions should be spent on reviving white-elephant infrastructure in the affluent, leafy, and already very well-served West End, and not expanding into the vast swathes of the city with nothing but a crappy bus service. by smellmafishfinger (Sat 15th Aug 2020 8:14am)
  • Not sure what areas you mean. The line in question has been developed on in several locations....eg, Kirklee, Kelvindale, Maryhill Tesco... You couldn't reopen it any further west than the Botanics. Admittedly you could potentially run it through the old tunnels from Exhibition centre to the Botanics, but then you'd have to find an alternative route through to other areas.... by smellmafishfinger (Sun 16th Aug 2020 5:24am)
  • Looking at old maps, the western portion of the former Glasgow Central line has been developed on at Kirklee and Kelvindale, and the Maryhill branch is now the Tesco. You could make use of the tunnel system from Exhibition centre as far as the Botanics only needing to tear up & split the Kelvin walkway at Kelvinbridge with damage & inconvenience to businesses shops and homes in that area.... But you couldn't run it to Drumchapel without knocking down someone's house. large sections of the eastern portion of the former Glasgow Central line still exist, and never went near Easterhouse in the first instance, and furthermore are still in use so not sure what you are talking about. by smellmafishfinger (Sun 16th Aug 2020 5:32am)

  • it's generally a fun place with friendly people and relatively inexpensive to live compared to other major UK cities. downsides are the weather (if you cant handle low UV and continual rain you will have an issue) and problems with litter and general urban/post-industrial decline affecting large swathes. Most of the city is quite poor, however the city is filled with fine architecture reflecting its victorian heyday. often the better areas are those in which this architecture has survived and not been bulldozed to make way for ill-conceived 'progress' in the 1960s. Most new arrivals would probably aim to live in the west end if they can afford it (although the immediate vicinity of the uni is very overpriced), otherwise the queen's park/shawlands/strathbungo areas of the south side, or on the periphery of the city centre, or some areas to the east such as Dennistoun. Otherwise its mainly suburbs and a few very deprived areas which tend to be on the edges of the city. These can be quieter and cheaper, but it depends on what your budget is and what you are looking for. by smellmafishfinger (Mon 24th Aug 2020 12:00pm)

Yes you will save money but it could cause issues down the line, eg with your credit history etc if you don't have a full record of you staying at that address. • I'm capable of seeing his greater point without getting hung up in the details of his statistics. He's not writing a philosophy essay he's making an emotional video on social media while his business is collapsing due to no fault of his own. You might not like the guy or whatever but a huge section of our economy, and one which Glasgow in particular depends on massively, is being told to essentially file for bankruptcy for the common good. That is while the universities are allowed to cram 12 students into a dorm, while social distancing is being flaunted left right and center, and school kids are all back in order, basically, to provide childcare for working parents, who are supposed to go into their offices. Pubs, meanwhile are heavily regulated spaces which have invested loads of money into just trying to stay afloat, yet it's not enough. You're probably safer in a pub than most anywhere. Lots of businesses are doing very nicely out of this, from home delivery services to the average sole trader who bought an Audi with his bounce back loan, to the billions defrauded out of CJRS. • Many tenement buildings conceal voids and thin/one layer brick walls between flats. Often the 'press' (The alcove/shelving recess, often in the 'living room') is actually a lightly bricked up door, initially used so workmen could move between flats during construction. Each room bar the bathroom originally had a fireplace, so somewhere there will be a void for that, which may not have been properly bricked up. They often also have very creaky floorboards and little sound insulation between flats, or have had their sound insulation removed. Although tenements look like solid sandstone, the party walls are often brick, with an outer sandstone facade, esp the red sandstone ones. by smellmafishfinger (Thu 22nd Oct 2020 6:36am)

  • "High" Knightswood is the earliest part with the biggest gardens etc. Part of the original wave of garden suburbs built in the 1920s along with Mosspark and Riddrie. • lack of mortgage availability, 85% LTV is all you can get now, which pushes a lot of FTBs out of the market. As soon as that happens it fucks the chain. Also a lot of properties came on the market at once after lockdown so saturation. Mad prices don't help, fuelling a general desire to 'wait and see' if the price drops, which won't matter if you can't get a mortgage anyway. Having said that property in Glasgow is still undervalued compared to other major cities in the UK and demand is not going to go down any time soon, so if/when we see the light at the end of the tunnel re: COVID it will once again go crazy. by smellmafishfinger (Thu 12th Nov 2020 6:27pm)

  • pretty much every flat or house built in Glasgow between 1919 and c. 1980 was built by the Corporation/Council. Housing associations took over ownership of this stock in 2003 while people had been buying them under Right to Buy since the 1980s. Check the Registers of Scotland website for flats in that block- if a bunch switched ownership in 2003 and then sold for very low prices in the subsequent years then they are council properties switching to HA then selling off under Right to Buy. If it is one of the low-rise flatted blocks with external rendering & balconies then definitely ex-council. If it is a pre-1919 tenement, then check the door and window frames- if they are of a uniform 1980s style then it will have been refurbed by the council and probably will be currently factored by one of the HAs (or Yourplace/Wheatley group which has took over factoring from some of the HAs). If they have extant Victorian/Edwardian period features or a mix of styles and are of a slightly bigger design (ie 4 apartment or above) they will likely have always been under private ownership. by smellmafishfinger (Sun 22nd Nov 2020 6:52am)

  • like all markets, house price increases are driven by high demand and low supply, and demand right now is at an all time high and unlikely to drop any time soon. even if the housing market drops it will rebound quickly as covid is a short-sharp-shock issue rather than a necessarily a structural one. and either way, a general crash will not affect all areas equally, London may well crash in house prices but areas of Glasgow stay bouyant or even go up as folk flee north. All in all, maybe a slowdown, yes, but a 2008 (or worse) style crash, I doubt it. As regards tax etc I won't be surprised if they extend the holidays....but we'll see. a crash is crap for all homebuyers as although prices are lower, less people are selling, and mortgages are more difficult to get. sure, if you have a wedge of cash it won't affect you, but that's always the case. by smellmafishfinger (Sat 28th Nov 2020 9:07pm)

  • pre 1919 tenements hold their value well, however always get a homebuyer survey done as they range in age from 100-nearly 200 years and many will need massively expensive repairs over the next couple of decades. depends how long you want to live in one though I suppose. Also all the new builds in the west end are totally shite "luxury" flats, many of which have issues with cladding. in my own weird opinion the real sweet spot for housing in Glasgow is the 1920s-early 1950s council builds, avoid non-trad construction though. built solidly and often with better layouts and gardens than pre-1919 tenements. you don't get the high ceilings and walk-in kitchens though. by smellmafishfinger (Thu 3rd Dec 2020 7:18am)
  • i think it massively depends on the specific building. As I say avoid non-traditional construction types. Also many have had external insulation added in recent years which has probably improved insulation but now requires an EWS1 form to get a mortgage. I'm just thinking in terms of layout and space, some of the immediate post WW2 flats are really nice and spacious, with balconies and massive external storage cupboards. 60s/70s the quality went right down as you say. by smellmafishfinger (Thu 3rd Dec 2020 9:54am)

  • The only reason our street is relatively clean is because locals pitch in and help pick up litter occasionally. a lot of the litter either derives from (a) kids (b) delivery drivers or other tradesmen etc who just fling their shite out the window or (c) overfilled bins which spill out/get blown out by the wind, or that just gets dropped when the binmen come and they can't be arsed picking it back up. Also the council have also been reducing the number of bins in a lot of the wee local parks of late I count at least 4 that have disappeared near me. Having said that, our green bins seem to have been emptied pretty regularly of late. by smellmafishfinger (Sat 6th Mar 2021 3:53pm)
  • I'm not sure finger-pointing and talking about "the calibre of people" is helpful. There is much more to litter than simply ignorant people dropping rubbish. Consumerism, consumption, over-packaging of products, social and economic issues, bad weather, cuts to services, political will, all play a role. Some groups of people (ie children and young people) litter disproportionatley to others-but they are also targeted by marketing from fast food and confectionary manufacturers, and literally their brains are wired to not care. not to mention that litter doesn't just "disappear" when its in a bin- it still ends up somewhere. It's too easy to shift the blame onto individuals and feel morally superior without tackling the macro problems. by smellmafishfinger (Sun 7th Mar 2021 4:26pm)
  • It would be more useful to compare Glasgow to other cities in the UK of similar size/with similar social issues than (\*insert very well cleaned part of tourist destination I once visited\*). • I get tired of the "why can't we be like Germany?" meme, as you know, we aren't Germans. We have to start from the baseline of where we are at and aim at gradual improvement. I'd rather look around for a start and say- can we be a bit cleaner than Newcastle or Edinburgh or Liverpool or Manchester. And go from there. And by the way, I doubt we are much more litter-strewn than those cities. Culture plays a role. Glasgow has had a litter issue for generations- just look at the old pics from the 1970s, 80s. The place was an absolute shithole. Then, it seemed to me it got better during the 90s and 00s but it has been going downhill since 2008 (so really, I'm comparing eras of investment and austerity) But also, people's consumption habits have changed, we consume a load more, particularly portable snacks etc. Just think of coffee cups for an example. In the late 90s there were a handful of places you could get a latte or a cappucinno, and Starbucks was exotic. Now every corner has a place you can buy a takeaway coffee and a cake. And of course right now thats all anyone can do for a social life. So that generates litter. I'm rambling but it;s a complex issue and simply cherrypicking an allegedly clean city and using it to compare doesn't work. You need context and history and a more holistic view, in my opinion. Also just pick some litter up yourself. by smellmafishfinger (Sun 7th Mar 2021 9:05pm)

However the bit you are talking about is a disused part of the Ardrossan canal and not scheduled, so you can legally detect there with simply permission of the owner. Your best bet is to contact Scottish Canals, also GCC council, and probably the West of Scotland Archaeology Service too for advice for embarking on metal detecting at that spot. • it just seems like a tenuous argument to link climate change and pandemics, specifically when we have the technology to deal with pandemics. out of all the things driving pandemics climate is quite far down the list I would say. by smellmafishfinger (Sat 5th Jun 2021 11:54am)

  • not sure what my height or gender has to do with it. sure, I'll read them. out of all the incredibly complex series of events which create a pandemic, choosing climate as a main driver is to stretch the point exceedingly thin. overpopulation might be the first place to look, or cultural practices, or access to water or healthcare, or global transportation. yes I know climate affects those things, but you can't just blame every major issue on the climate. or, maybe you can. by smellmafishfinger (Sat 5th Jun 2021 7:51pm)

  • the difference is in the glass (needs to be hand-polished), the pour (minimum 5 mins), and critically whether the pub sells enough Guinness as the barrel will rapidly go to shit if it sits around too long after being cracked open. The major difference in Irish Guinness is that you will always get a pint from a fresh barrel. by smellmafishfinger (Sun 13th Jun 2021 11:31am)
