  • I think there's a wee pop up no-packaging store in the Barras, off Bain Street, next to (or maybe part of) a cafe called Wee Bit Greener. by FoggyRook (Sun 13th Jan 2019 11:57am)

  • The Auctioneers, All Bar One, The Drum and Monkey, The Horseshoe Bar, O'Neil's and Harvesters are all part of the same company - Mitchells & Butlers - which has been warning against brexit. The Raven, Smokin' Fox and The Spiritualist are part of the Signature Pub Group, owned/run by the son's of Scotland's 2nd wealthiest individual, Sir Ian Wood. Sir Ian is pro-brexit. Maltman, Molly Malone's, Drouthy's, Rhoderick Dhu, Cairns Bar, and Scotia Bar are Bellhaven / Greene King pubs. Greene Kings seems to be cautious about Brexit. by FoggyRook (Sat 26th Jan 2019 2:43pm)
  • Try Welcome Home at CCA for decorative prints, the Art School should have a shop in the main building (the glass fronted one, not burnt down) that might have prints. Craft fairs are pretty frequent in Candleriggs, The Barras, and some libraries (I'm thinking mainly of Hillhead, sometimes The Mitchell) In the past I've success finding nice framed prints in charity shops - British Heart Foundation in Partick and the Emmaus store and (I think) a Cancer Research towards Thornwood Paperchase in the city centre has nice decorative single sheet wrapping paper (upstairs next to the paper and card art supplies) that look like vintage adverts, maps, and educational posters by FoggyRook (Sun 27th Jan 2019 10:53am)
  • There are loads of great places in Glasgow. The Merchant City probably has the most per square mile, followed by west of the city centre into Finnieston area. Here are one's I like, east to west. Merchant City - The Dhabba Koolba Dahkin West of City Centre - The Koh-I-Noor Akbar's Glasgow Mister Singh's India Westend - Mother India Bukharah (part of the Lorne Hotel) by FoggyRook (Mon 28th Jan 2019 12:32pm)
  • Also, check out local discount dining website 5pm.com - it's been a while since I've used it but the Dhabba and Dahkin used to have 50% off mains deals on there. by FoggyRook (Mon 28th Jan 2019 12:35pm)
  • I love Super Asia for this this kind of thing, on the corner of Pollokshaws Road and Maxwell Road. There are also a couple of places in Tradeston and near Bridge Street underground. by FoggyRook (Tue 29th Jan 2019 8:47pm)
  • There are free tours of the interiors of the city chambers. It doesn't take too long and the lobby and stairwells are surprisingly ornate. Might be a nice pairing if you also do Central Station. by FoggyRook (Wed 30th Jan 2019 2:55pm)
  • Not entirely true, I got on a new 18 yesterday behind a woman with a double buggy. She also had 3 other kids with her, and my utmost respect. by FoggyRook (Sun 17th Feb 2019 9:16am)
  • Sorry if I sounded mean. Some double buggies are still fine but a modernised bus fleet shouldn't mean less people can board. I back you, not First. by FoggyRook (Sun 17th Feb 2019 9:39am)
  • Bridgeton and Gorbals/New Gorbals are within walking distance (less than 20-30mins) to Queen Street and you could find a decent flat with your budget with some effort. You'd also be close to Glasgow Green which might balance out the lack of private garden to some degree. To go further out following the 60/61 bus route seems to me to be a good start. This gives you a choice of Tollcross / Parkhead / Shettleston in the east end and places like Clydebank / Summerston in the north west. Can't speak for what these areas are like to live though. by FoggyRook (Sun 17th Feb 2019 4:29pm)
  • >square ring binders agreed, Poundland had neon & b&w A4 binders last time I bought some, maybe pastel/marble stone ones now The Works, Flying Tiger and Paperchase usually have nice basic designs for a little more by FoggyRook (Sat 2nd Mar 2019 1:25pm)
  • I had to go in Buchanan Galleries once recently, so went to the loos near the food court. There was a shite stain about head height (I'm 6'1) on the wall of the first stall I went to. Never again. by FoggyRook (Wed 20th Mar 2019 7:01am)
  • Was it maybe the Warner Brother's Store on Buchanan Street? I don't remember it well but if somewhere were to have had a giant Marvin the Martian it would have been there. by FoggyRook (Sat 23rd Mar 2019 9:45am)

  • Fabric Remnant Kings has two locations in the city centre, the newer one on Howard Street is behind St Enoch Centre and near the Clyde. It's very interiors orientated and good for upholstery and curtains. The older location is on the first floor of the building on the corner of Argyle Street and Buchanan Street. House of Fraser occupies the ground floor but the shared entrance to Remnant Kings is next to a branch of Timpson's. If you're fine to do it, both shops are are a short walk from each other, you can cut through the St Enoch centre or walk round it, past the Underground station. There are few steps to get into the Argyle Street building but there's a working vintage lift. There's a Remnant Kings in Edinburgh so maybe you've already been there? The Howard Street is good for actual remnants if that appeals. Mandors Fabric Store is on Renfrew Street, not far from the art school and Cowcaddens underground station. I'm no expert but I think Mandors has a good selection of clothing and upholstery fabrics and its good for wool, buttons, and other small accessories. Over near the Barras Market there is Fabric Bazaar on London Road. It's good for budget material and has one sales assistant that is particularly helpful. Craft Caas Art on Queen Street, big, well laid out store that's part of a UK wide chain. There are art supplies inside Paperchase on Buchanan Street but I believe that these are supplied by Caas. Millers on Stockwell Street is/was the last independent art store in Glasgow but it's been shrinking over the years and recently joined with Greyfriars of Edinburgh. There's small art store over in Hillhead called Draw Art that stock quality pens, inks, paper, etc. It's one of a fair few small businesses in De Courcy's Arcade on Creswell Lane and if you go you'll pretty likely find something else of interest. by FoggyRook (Fri 12th Apr 2019 12:43pm)

  • Just a suggestion not based on experience - ask the guy if you can step inside his flat. Arrange for someone else to do stuff in your flat, like put a washing on, hoover, put the tv on, and learn how loud it is for him. Maybe your boyfriend could go to his flat and you could stay upstairs, or both go down and get a friend to help. by FoggyRook (Tue 25th Jun 2019 12:29pm)
  • Drygate (a Tennets and Williams Brothers partnership micro-brewery) is a good bet for quirky as they sometimes had/have limited edition trials / experiments on tap. It's a little east of the city centre. There's also West on the Green, also a microbrewery, also east of the city centre (but near Glasgow Green and the river Clyde). Makes beers to German purity laws (I'm paraphrasing and I don't know what that means). If I remember right usually have about half a dozen regulars on tap and two seasonal beers. People that drink more often than me, feel free to correct this post. by FoggyRook (Tue 2nd Jul 2019 9:07pm)
  • Yeah, there's two or three lodges in Bridgeton and a couple more do small walks round there too. The big city centre Boyne Parade is tomorrow, think that's the biggest of the summer season. by FoggyRook (Fri 5th Jul 2019 9:12am)

  • The landlord is at fault, not your neighbours. Log all the correspondence with the landlord and get a lawyer to send them a delict. They need to address the noise issue through repair - probably by installing new underlay and carpet in the bedroom above yours. You could probably cost this yourself for getting quotes for your own room. by FoggyRook (Mon 15th Jul 2019 11:12am)

  • the wee art store upstairs in De Courcy's arcade, maybe Argos might have office supplies, there's a branch at the Crow Road big shops otherwise Paperchase or CAAS Art on Queen Street will have a selection (CAAS stocks the art supplies in Paperchase, btw) in the city centre by FoggyRook (Tue 16th Jul 2019 7:45pm)
  • probably more flop than success, but the folks that run "Glasgow Pride" seem to be numpties that should have / could have stepped down after last year's ticketing fiasco As I understand it, there's a Pride march organised by mardigla today with no one big event afterwards. In August there's another Pride march organised by Pride Glasgow one week, again with no one big event afterwards, and on another day / weekend there's a community event run by Free Pride with no march planned before it by FoggyRook (Sat 20th Jul 2019 9:10am)
  • great! by FoggyRook (Sat 20th Jul 2019 8:11pm)
  • Bridgeton is OK - it's good that it's walking distance from the city centre but that also means there's no decent places to socialise in, because town is so close. The best coffee nearby is at Greggs (but it is a nice new Greggs). Both my dentist and GP are on my doorstep, and the local library and train station are right there too. Buses are pretty regular through Bridgeton Cross, Parkhead is good for shopping when you can't face city centre crowds. by FoggyRook (Mon 22nd Jul 2019 5:57pm)
  • I believe, but don't have first hand knowledge of, that there's stuff for parents and babies at The Tron, Tramway (and the Hidden Garden there), and sometimes the CCA. by FoggyRook (Sun 28th Jul 2019 8:43am)
  • There's a florist's called Blooms on Dumbarton Road, near Kelvinhall Underground, that's now more of a hipster houseplant store. I'd think they'd have a moss pole and they certainly have plant pots. by FoggyRook (Sun 28th Jul 2019 8:58am)
  • They can get an express bus to Glasgow City Centre pretty easily. A slower one (more stops) goes past the Kelvingrove, that'd be good for a couple of hours. They could get a bus to Braehead shopping centre, they've got kids activities on over the summer as well as the typical shops and food court. There's an Odeon there too. From Braehead it's short journey to Govan where you can visit and exhibition of viking gravestones at Govan Old Church (open 1pm- 4pm) and get a free boat over to the Riverside Transport museum. by FoggyRook (Sun 28th Jul 2019 9:16am)
  • Yeah, I see plenty of these mega bins overflowing but there also seems to be a more visible problem near me of folk leaving bin bags next to them as if they are their close or business' bins. I'm stepping over rubbish from ripped bin bags most days. There's also fly tipping near my flat and the council has missed our general waste bins twice in 6 weeks. by FoggyRook (Sat 10th Aug 2019 12:34pm)

  • Nope, EK is regarded as within both City Zone 2 AND Local (Zone) 3, so a City Zone bus ticket should take you there and back ok. Zone is such an odd word to write repeatedly [https://www.firstgroup.com/uploads/maps/Glasgow-Fare-Zone-Map\_web.pdf](https://www.firstgroup.com/uploads/maps/Glasgow-Fare-Zone-Map_web.pdf) by FoggyRook (Sun 11th Aug 2019 1:08pm)
  • The weather is very changeable, usually combinations of wet and windy that stop and start with "sunny intervals" that give the puddles and granite a nice glow. The underground system is so little that it only has one circle line and the tunnels are so small that the subway trains are custom made. Both factors contribute to the nickname "clockwork orange". The motorways and the Clyde river cut up the city, the Kingston Bridge and Clyde Tunnel are the main crossings for the river. Although what is called the West End is north of the river, what is considered North Glasgow is more north-east, cut off from the East End by the M8 motorway. I reckon every local should know the Duke of Wellington statue outside the Gallery of Modern Art, it's the guy sitting on a horse with a traffic cone on his head. It's become an unofficial mascot. The Glasgow School of Art and the O2 ABC were pretty well known buildings. The Kelvingrove Museum and Art Gallery in the west end is one of the busiest free visitor attractions in the UK. Many of the 60s tower blocks Glasgow was well known for are gone now but there's one at Anniesland Cross that's listed and fairly iconic. This forum might be a good resource for you - [http://www.hiddenglasgow.com/forums/index.php](http://www.hiddenglasgow.com/forums/index.php) as might this - [http://www.mitchelllibrary.org/virtualmitchell/](http://www.mitchelllibrary.org/virtualmitchell/) by FoggyRook (Sun 11th Aug 2019 9:17pm)
  • 1- Nope, the Tower Records building is empty and covered in vinyl and large posters 2- there's a shop on Queen Street (Geek Retreat?) that has game play at the back, and there's a similar new shop in St Enoch centre with a Japanese / anime focus. They also sell coffee. 3- The Grosvenor on Ashton Lane is still going 4- From ten years ago, I think all but one LGBTQ+ bars and venues run as they did. Can't mind its name but the one that's gone was shut for ages and was a bit of a dive, there's a small bar called Pavement there now. Bennet's is called AXM, Revolver is called Underground, and there's a relatively newer bar under the Italian Centre called Katie's Bar. The gay chip shop is no longer a chippy but still is pretty gay after closing time. The Arches were shut down by the police and the venue hosts a food market & beer hall at the weekends. The Studio Warehouse, SWG3, over in Kelvinhall has evolved quite a bit. There are a few queer nights at their Poetry Club sub venue. 5- Some of the busier stations got a shiny grey facelift, most are still 70's orange and brown. 6- I'm pretty sure the Chinese market near the Stow College building is still there, Stow College isn't. Most of the colleges merged into three bigger colleges and I think the Glasgow School of Art has moved into the building. 7- There's an LGBT+ bookshop in the Southside, not too far from Queens Park railway station. 8- I guess see my answer to q. 2 stands for this one but also check the app Meet Up for local groups 9- Don't think so but there are more routes and stations on some journeys than before. by FoggyRook (Sun 11th Aug 2019 11:40pm)
  • I'm not a big reader of fiction but I quite liked The Cutting Room by Louise Welch. Published in 2002, it capture/exaggerates the seediness of city centre & west end in the 90s. by FoggyRook (Sun 25th Aug 2019 9:41pm)

  • Surely there's a much higher threshold for what could get you arrested than what can get you fired. If there's not enough evidence then you might not get put away for head butting a coworker but there's a fair chance you'd get fired. by FoggyRook (Wed 4th Sep 2019 9:35pm)
  • from my experience, all charity shops that sell furniture will deliver for a fee In town there's a British Heart Foundation and a Shelter store close to each other on Stockwell Street In the west end there's a bigger BHF store and a homeless charity called Emmaus on Dumbarton Road, near Partick train station. Further east on Dumbarton Road, past the bottom of Byres Road there's the Salvation Army - that's probably got the biggest selection furniture, and fastest stock turn around. Much of the stock is pre-owned Ikea or similar quality. Last time I bought a bed it was from Archers Sleepcentre on Great Western Road by FoggyRook (Tue 17th Sep 2019 7:33am)

  • I thought it was only there for the buzz, from what I've seen online (there's not much) most people don't taste it but enough do for it to matter to a mass market. I think the main reason it is in cola is that the kola nut and guarana are natural sources of caffeine, although most modern recipes don't use them, caffeine is added to retain the kick that old versions had. by FoggyRook (Thu 24th Oct 2019 9:43pm)
  • Amazon let one employee lay dead for 10-20 mins before an alarm was raised that they needed assistance. The same employee had been reprimanded previously for putting an item in the wrong bin, the response to that action was under 5 mins. There are bigger issues than customer service for the wealthy. by FoggyRook (Wed 30th Oct 2019 9:15am)
  • I think the city centre needs a modern library - the Mitchell is a bit hemmed in by the expressway / motorway (I don't drive and just realised I don't know the name of the mess of roads between the Kingston Bridge and the M8). I think there's scope for a food market at Trongate or next to the Barras. As much as I like the BHS building I wouldn't miss it if a decent new building replaced it. If it would help, perhaps turn it into an emergency hostel / 24 hr day centre for street sleeping homeless for now. As stop-gap solutions I'd use the empty spaces as event spaces - put Christmas market stuff and an ice rink up there instead of (or as well as) cramming it all into George Square and St Enoch. In summer it could be a picnic area with food trucks and a play area. I'd also consider de-pedestrianising (if that makes sense) so that more buses (and taxis after rush hours) go more directly past shops. I'd also advocate for this on Argyle Street. Continue the style of works that has recently finished / will soon finish from Charing Cross to Buchanan Street. I'd like to see King Street car park redeveloped, perhaps as a subterranean car park with a civic square and gardens on ground level. In turn I'd pass plans to renew the entrance to the Royal Concert Hall so that it is way more visible and accessible at the Sauchiehall Street and Buchanan Street entrance, Arguments about losing the stairs as a gathering point for protest could be mitigated by having an alternate at my new King Street gardens. by FoggyRook (Wed 30th Oct 2019 9:50am)
  • BHS sold hot food, there was a small cafe at the Renfield St entrance and there's a good chance there was another on the Bath Street side. by FoggyRook (Wed 30th Oct 2019 9:59am)
  • The City of Glasgow College has quite a big and relatively newly built media department. You can probably follow the HNC&D path and go to Uni for 3rd & 4th year elsewhere. UWS and Stirling might be options for you. (not an expert) by FoggyRook (Thu 31st Oct 2019 6:17pm)
  • There's a youngish Irish chap in Bridgeton at Park Dental I'd wholeheartedly recommend. The gentlest dentistry I've experienced (scale, polish, extractions, fillings), usually has interesting music on, and gets on well with staff so there's usually a friendly atmosphere in the room. by FoggyRook (Thu 31st Oct 2019 6:24pm)

  • I've no issue with any street name changing, unless the pace or scale of change gets confusing. I'd like to see more new statues and street names commemorating women and minorities from the distant and recent past, not just because of links to Glasgow but also to global social justice, such as Nelson Mandela Place. Couldn't tell you who any of the statues in the city centre are of, except Donald Dewar. by FoggyRook (Sun 10th Nov 2019 4:15pm)
  • I'd love to see GoMA turn into a Scottish museum of slavery, colonialism, and conflict; or a global history museum that contains those themes and more. I don't rate the building as a gallery, although the location is great. Maybe if Debenhams folds that building could be re-purposed as a mega art centre (like Manchester's HOME or Newcastle's Baltic) or a new gallery could be fitted into the new developments in Tradeston. by FoggyRook (Sun 10th Nov 2019 4:29pm)

  • There are next to no amenities in Oatlands (one small primary school, a portacabin community centre, a bowling green, and one corner shop) and there's a fair bit of ambient road traffic noise thanks to the road to Rutherglen and the nearby M74 junction. by FoggyRook (Tue 10th Dec 2019 5:15pm)
  • weak building regulations and low level of enforcement by owners in occupied buildings shuttering of old buildings instead of redevelopment leading to fire starting as vandalism or as heat source for squatters Glasgow is bad for its provisions for street sleepers (but also a UK wide problem tbf) and for its treatment of its 'built heritage' (consequence of toothless legislation and an underfunded council) by FoggyRook (Mon 16th Dec 2019 10:10am)
  • arson isn't a definition used in Scotland; there's wilful fire-raising, culpable and reckless conduct, and vandalism I was imagining kids setting light to car batteries or cans of deodorant, or setting off fireworks, could lead to unplanned building fires even if they did know what they were doing was dangerous by FoggyRook (Mon 16th Dec 2019 4:43pm)

  • Pretty sure Glasgow is fairly unique for having it's city center dissected by motorways. The two places I've seen mention here, Finnieston and High Street at Trongate, are both close to off/exit ramps to them. I'm often on foot around High Street and Cathedral Street a fair bit these days and the traffic closer to the Royal is mental at peak commute times. by FoggyRook (Tue 28th Jan 2020 8:25pm)
  • maybe the Burrell Collection if the land and collection were gifts to the city? I think part of why Glasgow has a high ratio of green land to built is because of gifts to the "public good" that predate the modern local council system by FoggyRook (Thu 30th Jan 2020 8:11pm)

  • My take away is that I hate the "(y)our" and they mention that the lanes are a state at least three times. I don't think there any answers, or proposals, really. It's more this is the direction we want to go and we'll consult in stages and procrastinate incrementally as bureaucracy tends to. That said, I think turning King Street car park into an event space so that George Square is just a civic space and "landing zone" for visitors for the city is in there, something I'd support. by FoggyRook (Thu 13th Feb 2020 5:18pm)
  • If it keeps evolving I think it's fine, it's on breeze block, nothing historic to preserve. Good space for organic, not commissioned work. I don't like tagging but sometimes graffiti needs spaces to be a battleground or scratch pad rather. All the legal stuff on building ends and building site boarding is starting to bore me, even if individually the work is good. It would be nice to see something that's not been given permission by committee AND is interesting. by FoggyRook (Fri 14th Feb 2020 6:34pm)

  • Show me some history that isn't grim! The Museum of Slavery in Liverpool is pretty good at showing how horrible lives were for African slaves in America and the West Indies and what kind of history and life was lost in African. The Museum of Terror in Berlin gave me a profound understanding of who and what was lost in the Holocaust, more so than any documentary or lesson. I don't think the Egyptian Halls are particular special in that they have to be preserved for some social / cultural purpose. I don't think the use matters as long as the ugly hoardings come down and the building is occupied. Slaves weren't immediately free after 1807, and 1807 was only one chapter of many in a story that's still current - the deportation of the "Windrush Generation" and the conflicts in former colonies for example. by FoggyRook (Mon 24th Feb 2020 4:29pm)

  • Charities, even if they are part funded by government, shouldn't be doing the lion's share of the work in a crisis. I'm not an expert but I'm fairly sure Scotland has more social housing available than England & Wales (relative to total populatio), and in turn Glasgow has a higher ratio of social rent to private rent than any other city in Scotland. Glasgow is still failing to meet the needs of street sleepers and the no-fixed address homeless in tempory accomdation. Glasgow did well to reduce knife crime by tackling it as a public health crisis; perhaps something similar could and should happen with street sleeping? If private companies are permitted to knock up student accomadtion at very turn why not build more hostels and boarding houses? by FoggyRook (Wed 4th Mar 2020 11:52am)

I think you'll have more trouble if you wear the wrong football strip in the wrong pub on the wrong day but I think that's true of any British city with rival teams. • Try looking to Shelter or Citizen's Advice as it is a housing related issue. I'd also contact the local councillor for the area asking for more information about the charity - what's the name, who runs it, what services is it providing? All that should be OK to do via email or over the phone. I'm no lawyer or expert but here are some of the questions I'd have: Was there a change of use for the property, did that go through all the proper steps? Has the charity operated somewhere before, is this a new service, a relocation, or an expansion? Does the charity own the property, if not, who is the landlord? The landlord might have a greater responsibility than anyone that works for the charity. by FoggyRook (Sat 2nd May 2020 10:04pm)
  • I had friends that stayed in a new build housing estate outside Gartcosh for a bit; I only visited a couple of times but I house and dog sat one weekend. Their back garden looked out over plenty of fields and they were a short drive to the shops and cinema at the Fort. Didn't explore the town much but there's a loch with walks around it closer to the train station than my friends were. Another nomination for consideration is Chatelherhault in Hamilton. Not sure it would be considered to be 'in' the countryside as Hamilton is a big commuter town, almost a city probably, but Chatelherhault Country Park is right next to the station and is expansive and pretty good for dog walks. by FoggyRook (Tue 5th May 2020 10:27am)

  • I really don't think this thread is fair on Brel. In my opinion the OP has been billed unfairly but only because of how the restraunt has communicated their interpretation of the gov support. Calling it a scam is unreasonable as the point of the scheme is to help businesses and to encourage consumers to experience a "new normal" (unrelated: I hate that phrase) Withnot knowing the OP's bill here's a approximation: 9 people eating £25 worth of food and drink each (ie two courses w. soft drinks) is £225. The deposit of £90 is also a prepayment of sorts and is deducted first, as it would be on any day of the week. 225 - 90 = 135, then 50% of the remainder is £67.50. In this scenario, £90 was paid in advance, £67.50 on the day, and £67.50 is covered by the government. I'm only guessing but I think asking for the prepayment gives establishment cash reserves for staff, running costs, and suppliers so that they can stay open. We're going from an ongoing pandemic shutdown to a recession to a likely depression. by FoggyRook (Wed 12th Aug 2020 9:41am)
  • Doing more math in my head: to get the full benefit of the "eat out to help out" scheme at Brel, any one customer needs to spend at least £30 and within that at £20 needs to be on food and non-alcoholic drinks. On other days the prepayment means any one customer only needs to spend at £10 any which way they want. by FoggyRook (Wed 12th Aug 2020 9:59am)
  • As I said, I think it's unfair on the OP. I think it's a flaw in how Brel communicate the discount and how it intersects with their prepayment requirement. The voucher scheme is meant to "help out" the business and I think its unfair to call a flaw a scam on a public forum. Brel should/could have handled things better but also, is £3.33 per person that big a problem? by FoggyRook (Wed 12th Aug 2020 10:49am)

  • I hate being in a small shop and being the only one with a mask on. That's just mean spirited. I really dislike people that wear face coverings really loosely, or don't put it over their nose - I can't stand the half-hearted effort. See also folk that pull their jacket up over their nose or press their scarf to their mouth to do the bear minimum. The folk that have them to put on only when they think they might get reprimanded - like departing a train if they think they'll see staff at the station but didn't wear it for their journey - deserve their own corner of hell. I do think that the government, be it Westminster, Holyrood or councils, should be distributing masks fairly generously. The English lot spent the equivalent of around £450 per household on their track and trace efforts (which includes the abandoned bespoke app that cost £££ for no moral reasons).; imagine if that went on decent masks and safety information instead! by FoggyRook (Thu 24th Sep 2020 5:16pm)

  • Guessing and hoping that your factor is the same as his I'd complain to yours about the need for extra cleaning and explain the story fully. If they are not the same is there anyone in his building that you could ask about the factoring? If you both have a responsive factor or housing association in common then you all might get a few letters through asking residents not to throw food waste out of their windows. (I've had similar about leaving bin bags inside the close instead of taking them out to the bin shed and another time, littering) I'd also try environmental health and cleansing services within the council before trying your local councillors themselves. In a city this big I'm sure they've had similar issues. Escalate to councillors if nothing seems to be done. MSPs if they fail you. There's a high chance the food waste will attract mice and rats soon enough as well as the gulls. by FoggyRook (Wed 30th Jun 2021 12:31pm)

  • I take it a time machine to reverse the decisions to build two motorways through the city isn't available? Failing that I think we need a nation-wide, if not UK wide, resolution for better roads with bike and bus lanes. More public and third sector involvement with buses and rail. • The CCA (Centre for Contemporary Arts) on Sauchiehall Street is interesting as inside it has the exposed exteriors of older buildings, with a glass roof on top. The interior courtyard is now a mix of old brick and sandstone and modern (2000s) metal and concrete. The Lighthouse (a museum/gallery of architecture and design) on Mitchell Lane has a similar vibe as it was a similar renovation completed by the same architects for a similar purpose but a very different layout and has more opportunities for looking out to the city, including a sandstone tower. Some of what's now CCA was designed by Alexander Greek Thompson and The Lighthouse occupies some of what was an old premises of The Herald (IIRC) and was designed, at least in part, by Charles Rennie Mackintosh. The main gallery space in GoMA (Gallery of Modern Art) at Royal Exchange Square is pretty awesome and decorative but how much you can see and it's impact depends on the art on display on your visit. The Kelvingrove Gallery and Museum in the west end is also stunning inside and out. For more Mackintosh, House for an Art Lover in Bellahouston Park is a middling walk from Ibrox. It has a fun sculpture garden that's diverting and the park itself is pretty expansive with good views of tower blocks and motorways from its central hill (good if you're into urban-ism anyway). • Depending on where your flat is delivery from a charity shop may be a similar cost across a wider area range than you might think. I stay in Bridgeton, near the city centre, and I found that delivery from Motherwell was only slightly dearer than from Partick. In Partick my feeling is that the Salvation Army has fairly high turnover of furniture and only occasionally have white goods. The BHF nearer the train station often has a small selection of white goods, they are good bet for a bed and decent mattress IMO. Emmaus charity shop further west down Dumbarton Road is good for furniture but also soft furnishings like cushions and kitchen stuff like cutlery and glassware. There is a Shelter and BHF on Stockwell Street in town, both with furniture and white goods. There's a big Shelter in Rutherglen's main street shopping centre (along with a branch of Home Bargains). In Motherwell there's a fairly big BHF and another well stocked Shelter. by FoggyRook (Tue 27th Jul 2021 2:16pm)

  • I've never thought about any of the shops on Buchanan Street being private homes before. I'd guess you might find more original features away from the shop floor which will have been remodelled many more times than a typical stock room. I think that Hobbs, between The White Company and Tiso, has an old glass ceiling that you might find interesting but I doubt that the premises was ever a private residence. Do you know that GoMA was a private home before being used as a stock exchange/trading house and banking hub? • I believe that Glasgow is somewhat unique in that it has more housing association accommodation than most cities. We've got the Glasgow Housing Association, that typically manages tower blocks and what might have been once called council estates, and is the biggest social landlord in Scotland. Below that we've got about a dozen smaller Housing Associations that have localised specialisations - most roughly identifiable by their name, Southside Housing Association for example manages properties south of the Clyde. I think contacting GHA is the best starting point as one of their priorities is to house people needing adaptions in their home. I think, as of a few years back, you can make one application to GHA and 12 other local housing associations at the one time, adding yourself to a shared register as you might be familiar with. You might be able to, or indeed need to, apply to others separately. I recommend the Citizen's Advice service for guidance as they will know more than me and they are better equipped for offering support by phone and email after the pandemic meant shifting to WHF for most of their volunteers. by FoggyRook (Wed 25th Aug 2021 11:53am)

  • I can't say that I've done so in Glasgow but I've been out on my own when travelling. My experience of the gay scene here is more than few years old so anything I say here may be out of date. My feeling is that it's only worth clubbing on your own if you're OK dancing by yourself, in a room full of strangers (who are not paying you much mind so I think it's fine). I find sitting or standing around on my own feels a bit awkward. I'd recommend going to bars first and getting an idea of where fits your vibe and it's way less uncomfortable being on your own when there is entertainment or karaoke on. Katie's Bar, Underground and The Gallery are worth checking out as well as Delmonica's and The Riding Rooms. I know there's new bar opened at Saltmarket called Bonjour, that seems to be young gender queer and trans friendly, and another (maybe) called Slay on Glassford Street within the glass fronted building that's mostly a carpark and used to house Tiger Tiger. I think the people behind that have been putting on drag shows in other venues for a while. If you're not familiar with Polo, The Riding Rooms is part of the club but separate enough to have shows, live music and drag usually, before the club opens fully. Delmonica's is not part of the club, opens earlier and shuts usually at midnight but is owned by the same group and is the same feeder bar for Polo most nights. Club X is a room within the Polo that can be open on its own some weeknights, say on a Tuesday, not open at all on another weeknights, and open as part of the Polo at the weekend for full capacity. In my day you could into the Polo free before 11pm or get an entry pass from the bar at Delmonica's between 11pm & 12am. There is also the possibility of passes from 'promo' teams for Polo and AXM on the street near either venue. There are a few of lgbt nights at the Poetry Club / SWG3 in the west-end, Hot Mess (disco house music, mostly male crowd but mixed) Shoot Your Shoot (similar vibe but more of mixed crowd) and DILF (I've never been been but I imagine a cruisey vibe for men, cruising). There has been and might be again LGBT+ nights at the Berkeley Suite, Nice and Sleazy's, the Art School, The Flying Duck, and Stereo. There are definitely clubs and bars I haven't heard of so although I've listed a fair few there are and will be more. by FoggyRook (Thu 26th Aug 2021 11:02pm)

The two big gay clubs are The Polo Lounge on Wilson Street and AXM on Glassford Street. Every venue listed will have drag entertainment at some point, often there's 'drag' bingo or the karaoke is run by a drag queen. by FoggyRook (Sat 28th Aug 2021 9:27pm)
  • I don't have recent experience of this but contact your university's housing department and any relevant private halls of residence: they may have rooms that have reservations now but will be cancelled once term starts. I'm assuming that you are attending Glasgow Uni: look at the Subway map for areas to search in, living near any of its stations should get you on campus (if not in a classroom) in under 40mins. Hillhead is probably the busiest stop for uni students. Also look at the Low Level trains, anywhere that's a 20min train ride to Partick or Exhibition Centre should meet your requirements. I wouldn't go further out than Scotstoun or Anniesland to the West or Bridgeton or Dennistoun/ Alexandr Parade to the East. The Southside is popular because it's a bit cheaper than the Westend or City Centre but has plenty to offer in terms of shops, places to eat and drink, and parks. Getting to Uni from there will probably mostly take longer than 35 mins as you'll need to change buses or Low Level trains in the City Centre (trains at Central Station, buses nearby it) to do the full journey by public transport. Might be worth considering living a bus ride away from a Subway station. Plenty of bus routes go past Cessnock on Paisley Road West and Bridge Street on Eglinton Street. The North of Glasgow isn't very well connected to the West End and I've never heard of students staying there (doesn't mean that it doesn't happen). If you did end up there you can reach Queen Street by Low Level train and then go on to Partick or Hillhead via the Subway at Buchanan Street, or change trains to reach Partick or Exhibition Centre. by FoggyRook (Mon 30th Aug 2021 12:24pm)

  • I've only got experience using First Bus as other operators don't go through my bit of town (Bridgeton) and I'm happy to be corrected by other as First like to change things with little warning. For them I'd recommend getting a weekly pass at the very least, if this works out financially for you. If you download their app for tickets then you can purchase a student First Week. I think prices on the app are cheaper than buying from the driver. After purchasing the tickets stay on your 'wallet' indefinitely until activated when needed. When you activate a single journey you then have something like 30mins to use it, I think I remember an all day ticket staying active until 1am or 2am so it runs to the end of normal service. I don't think bus drivers really care about where you are going in that your destination doesn't affect your fare (there used to a be a slightly cheaper "short hop" ticket but that was for only the distance of 6 bus stops). If you're paying for one journey at a time you need a single. If you are travelling from outside what First call the City then prices are a bit higher. I think Hamilton is outside the City area but East Kilbride is not, for example. They don't offer returns, the next best is an All Day ticket which is only worth it if you are doing three or more trips that day. Watch out for letters next to the numbers on the front of buses. Letters after the number mean the most of the route is the same as others of the same number but diverge from other routes to cover different areas at the start and end of their route. Letters in front of a number; X mean it's an express bus (limited stops) or M will make use of the motorway (so no stops for a fair whack of the journey) by FoggyRook (Wed 22nd Sep 2021 10:31am)

  • I've been assessed for adult autism at Eastwood Health and Care Centre and I was asked to bring someone that knew me through childhood (my mum) - the wait for that wasn't very long, three years ago it was something like 8 months. I'm currently waiting for assessment for adult adhd at the Arran Centre. I've not heard anything directly from them since I received forms to complete - duplicates were to be filled in by someone that knew me through childhood but I sent them back empty as I didn't want to involve my parents again (I'm over 40). I did check with my GP to confirm that I'm indeed on the waiting list as I did send those forms back late. I think it's been about 8 months since the referral and 2 months since I checked with the GP. by FoggyRook (Mon 1st Nov 2021 1:25pm)
  • I was told at Eastwood that I am not autistic but probably had issues with excutive functioning - the only help given was those two words written on the back of a scrap piece of paper. I had already come across that term prior to going to my GP and was very unsure about why I was getting assessed for ADHD at an autism clinic. It was only after struggling for a bit longer, and getting counselling, that I went back to the GP about ADHD. I'm not particulary convinced I have either condition but recognise that I have traits of both, more so ADHD. by FoggyRook (Tue 2nd Nov 2021 3:47pm)

  • We have lots of parks so that's not a big issue. I'd advocate Southside, near Queens Park for dog walking, eating and drinking in Strathbungo and Shawlands, and lefty/green community activities around the Victoria Drive / Govanhill area. Mount Florida and Cathcart seem nice too but are a touch further out from the city centre. Bear in mind that a big % of our housing stock is tenement flats that don't offer much parking; streets with these flats are usually packed with parked cars. You'll probably want a house or a recently built flat. A bonus is that these are easier to heat that tenements. by FoggyRook (Mon 15th Nov 2021 12:12pm)

  • I got the train through fairly early and that was fine. My family that I was meeting missed theirs at Shotts and I wandered about for a bit on my own. Waverly Station was pretty busy on arrival, around 10am and much busier when I left between 3&4pm. I think the rides near Scott Monument were running with no signs of queues when I passed but I didn't go along Princess Street until later so don't know about the whole of the market. I noticed the cafes that were open seemed busy before lunch and once I met my mum and aunt, trying to find something with booking was tough. We stopped at nice enough cafe that crammed full of damp shoppers. Going back along Princess Street to get the train home was horrible, really busy for crowds and puddles. The queue to get in the fair rides was huge and the Waverly Centre was pretty busy too. Massive queue for the ladies' loo, felt guilty about the short wait but no queue at the gents. The train I got was packed but I got a seat OK, and it emptied a bit after the first stop. Nice to be reminded on my way home that Buchanan Street our city centre is actually quite good: even if the bins were overflowing and there were three police vans pulled up to the Christmas market at St Enoch Square, by FoggyRook (Mon 6th Dec 2021 12:06pm)
  • I'd close Buchanan Bus Station and replace it with at least two better placed bus stations - one near Anderston train station and another near High Street. In tandem I'd open up Sauchiehall Street and Argyle Street for buses and taxis, and bikes. I'd pedestrianise some of the streets between Ingram Street and Argyle Street, and also Sauchiehall Street and Bath Street. I think it would be good for Glasgow to have a central library that's in the city centre, maybe taking over the BHS building and neighbouring properties. The Watt Bros. store I'd run as a arts and crafts centre, filling it with studios and shops. I think that Debenhams could become a conference / exhibition centre with spaces for gigs, films and art events too with more cafes and bars. by FoggyRook (Mon 13th Dec 2021 6:12pm)
  • A broader question I have is what needs to happen for 'recycling' to work? I think we need UK gov to put standards in to law and for Holyrood to match it: there shouldn't be different recycling and waste standards in neighbouring council areas. I also think that there should be very easy to access and use recycling bins in just about every car park going and supermarkets and retail parks should finance most of them. The likes of Amazon and IKEA should really be sponsering cardboard recycling too. Locally, should there be better information about what can go in blue bins? Just paper and card, **some** plastic, drinks cans and food tins... At my close folks put glass bottles, clothes, boots, and bags for life in the blue bins. I used to re organise the bins myself but I gave up. Also: crushing cans and flattening boxes would make a big difference to overspills. by FoggyRook (Fri 17th Dec 2021 9:39am)

Not an expert but I think that the online retail growth hasn't been exceptional: it has been big enough to destabalise the status quo but as one factor alongside many others. Financing was the main reason House of Fraser was bought up by Sports Direct while Debenhams fell. Supermarkets contributed heavily to the reduction in quality and accesibility of local shops. Under investment in public transport and 'active travel' routes have made getting to the shops a chore. by FoggyRook (Sat 23rd Apr 2022 10:38am)

  • More people need to be able to take the bus or train so we need better bus and train services. The only way roads will improve for cars is for there to be far fewer cars on the roads. As for the taxis, aren't Uber and Lyft essentially a long con, the finacing behind them is a gamble on driver-less cars leading to a low to no wage profit making operation. Until then, they make a loss. I like the 'What If' thought experiment of imagining away the M8 through Glasgow but I don't know what would be needed to replace it. • Saying this willing to be told I'm wrong, but does anyone else think litter got worse when the bins got bigger? The current wheelie bin in a black tin can system doesn't appear to be working when so many are full to the gunnel. During the recent strike, in the city centre it was easy to see where crap folk were binning was coming from thanks to branding: McDonalds, Costa, KFC etc. In my neighbourhood the big street bins are misused by businesses that should be arranging their own private refuse service and households using the street bins instead of or as well as their close bins. Maybe shop owners need to be obliged to use the same private waste company as their neighbours, like how residents of a flat collectively work with one factor? It'd be a ball-ache and unfair to some, but it could streamline bin collections at your local shops and cut down on associated waste pile ups? by FoggyRook (Wed 21st Sep 2022 4:38pm)

  • Thornwood, as you're not too far from Partick station which is good for our local rail network and our small but circular subway system Haghill, where you indicated, isn't too bad for buses into the city centre and Alexandra Parade train station, which I think isn't too bad for getting in and out of the city centre. by FoggyRook (Thu 13th Apr 2023 3:14pm)

  • Feel bad for the employees, I'm pretty sure some have been there, on and off, for longer than Saramago have been the ones running the cafe and bar. Pretty bad news for the CCA as a whole, how soon until to the cafe is open to some degree? by FoggyRook (Fri 21st Apr 2023 2:29pm)
  • I used to work at the CCA, many years back. There's lots going on there to a wide range of audiences for a wide range of reasons. With arts funding generally shrinking it is still fairly important and precarious within Glasgow and Scotland's art systems. by FoggyRook (Sat 22nd Apr 2023 1:13pm)
  • Saramago wasn't all that far removed from the Flying Duck chain, to begin with. Pretty sure Paul Smith managed Stereo and set up The Old Hairdressers in his time there. In their early years Saramago were responsible for much of the music programming and djs, and I imagine that's not changed. It's not just food and drink that this will impact. by FoggyRook (Sat 22nd Apr 2023 1:18pm)

  • This business is almost my neighbour, it's not for me but it's a cool, friendly place. Spoken to the owner / manager a bit and he's lovely and keen to be trans and gender non conforming friendly. • I'm old enough to remember 13th Note becoming part of some sort of chain that in Glasgow included a club on the Broomielaw calle Barfly. Did the folks that set up 13th Note nearly go under at one point but after selling to Barfly set up Mono, and then Stereo and Flying Duck? I think there was some connection to the people behind the Baby Grand and Ad lib. The folks that set up Saramago certainly worked for Stereo, maybe Mono, and bought the Doublet in the west end years ago. My point is, the owner and managers of these places aren't amateurs, aren't always independent as they seem, and know full well when they are compromising on fair pay and conditions. (and then there is the group formally known as G1, which I think has re-branded to make itself look like a few smaller chains, which is known for underpaying staff and generally acting like shitebags) by FoggyRook (Sat 13th May 2023 7:05pm)
  • I'm in a fairly unique position of being in HA flat that I'm allowed to share with a flatmate but I'm also over 40 so having a flatmate at all is mentally taxing. For food I try to use a community grocery so I get fruit, veg, a loaf and some tinned goods for £4 every other week and then sometimes will use an app called "Too Good To Go" to get a bag of groceries (usually fruit, veg and a loaf again) from Morrisons for under £3.50. I already didn't go out much and didn't drive. As I already hardly go out out or see people so I guess I was already where some of you are getting to. Failing that, sexual health clinics run across the West of Scotland under name "Sandyford" (I think named after the building the first one originated in, near Kelvingrove in the westend). • I'd say yes - I stay in Bridgeton so have wandered around many times over the years. What I once observed as empty spaces have been filled up with arts and crafts; its like there's a craft fair in amongst the second books, toys and clothes. More of a merger than a take over. There's also a 'not long out of art school' vibe to a few stalls and you can definitely get cool magazines, screen prints, neon candles, funky cushions, etc. Ho Lee Fook and Scran are great new places to get food and Us Vs Them and Outlier are both good places to get coffee. I'm sure there are more but these are where I've tried and enjoyed (Outlier is at Glasgow Cross, close but not really the Barras) The cost of living crisis has put up the prices of the freshly fried sugar doughnuts from the stall on London Road but they are still delicious and would 100% recommend. by FoggyRook (Mon 31st Jul 2023 8:58am)
