  • You can get to it on Rubislaw Drive, you can't really walk round it or anything though as it's full off trees up to the water line in most parts + you'd be jumping through folks back gardens or flat gardens and stuff, so the Rubislaw bit is ok just to look at it. There's a wee fenced off bit next to the bench - I'm not sure if that's someone's garden or not tbh. by Snoith (Sun 3rd May 2020 8:31pm)

  • Technically it is (if it's not shared use), but the way a lot of drivers treat cyclists on the roads scares non confident cyclists onto the pavements - better cycling infrastructure and prioritising bikes over cars (as they do in Denmark and other European countries) would be a step in the right direction. • Sounds like they've reduced the number of payments (installments) over the year to 9 instead of 10 (in your case). Band F should be £2899.52 over the full year. Usually that's 10 payments of £289 ish If you've just set up a Direct Debit they might have split it into 9 payments for this year - Which would be around £322 each month for 9 months. Happened to me a few years ago, but switches back to 10 payments after the first year. Check the number of payments on your letter, but I reckon it will be that. by Snoith (Wed 27th May 2020 2:15pm)

  • It really is, I get that people are outraged, and rightly so, but there seems to be a certain "Instagramable" social media aspect to it. There are terrible things going on all over the world right now, and I'd imagine if you mentioned the Rohingya in Myanmar or Christians and Yazidis in Iraq/Syria, most people going to that rally or posting about it wouldn't have a clue what you were talking about. I'm not saying spreading awareness about things is wrong, I'd just wonder how many would be so outraged at learning of other current atrocities, I'd be doubting they'd attend a rally about it. That's not even the main issue, the main issue is obviously a congregation of people during this pandemic is going to indirectly cause at least a few deaths. All it takes is one infected person to infect one other person, that one goes home to their house and their parent is a carer - boom, an elderly person dies and a strain is put on the NHS. Just a massive slap in the face to everyone trying so hard to make a difference. I've already seen videos of folk in Glasgow protesting about it, and they're not social distancing. I don't get how you can protest about killing someone, by literally causing the death of other innocent people, actually mental. by Snoith (Tue 2nd Jun 2020 12:50am)

  • I'm not condemning anyone for supporting the cause. I am concerned about the spread of covid 19. How many of this crowd were infected with covid before attending? I doubt it is 0. From these photos you can see that a lot of people weren't distancing correctly or at all. Let's say 1% of what,? about 4000 folk. So that's 40 people. Now after standing that close with people for a few hours, even with most people wearing masks, there's a high chance those 40 people will infect at least 1 other person, if not more. So hopefully it's only about another 100 folk getting a new infection, and those people will go home and probably be fine, but could potentially infect their full household. So maybe that's 300 new infections, some of those people might be elderly or key workers (in a care home, or work in a supermarket, or a teacher). So how many new infections is that? How many people will die as a result of people standing so close in the park today? 0? 1? 10? 100 or more? Who knows, I certainly don't. There are other ways of protesting at the moment, this doesn't help the cause at all. There's already a disproportionate number of BAME people dying from this. The more stuff like this happens, the more chance of a second spike, the longer we all have to stay at home, the more chance you'll lose your job, the more chance the economy will fail. You know who comes out worst in these situations? Those who are already marginalised by society. It's not that mass gatherings aren't ideal, they're deadly - probably not to those who are young and healthly enough to attend, but to those who catch the virus from them. There are other ways to protest and educate. by Snoith (Sun 7th Jun 2020 4:52pm)
  • So you're cool if your 60 year old parent or grandparent dies of covid because of this then? I'd imagine you'd feel a wee tinge of regret if you went to that today, then a week later your parent got took to hospital and put on a ventilator, for you to be told you couldn't be with them as they die. Then not being able to hold a proper funeral for them, with only 15 people in attendance. Because that will probably happen to a few people who went today. As I said, right now, there are other things we can be doing. by Snoith (Sun 7th Jun 2020 5:38pm)
  • Here, did you actually read that article? Or did you just post it and pick the bits relevant to your argument? It said "I mean, it is true that if you go back out there, we’re going to see spikes of disease" "Try to keep to smaller groups"; "keep your mask on at all times". Glad to hear you're now going to self isolate for 14 days as well, will do many people a favour. I assume you went and are trying to make yourself feel better about going. by Snoith (Sun 7th Jun 2020 5:54pm)
  • So why were you at a gathering of thousands of people in a park then? That surely disagrees with what that medical professional was advising? That wasn't a small group. Was there a reason you went to the park and didn't just stand outside your own front door with a sign? You're not helping the cause by doing this, you're playing right into the oppressors hands. When the public enquiry into why more BAME people are affected by covid than other groups comes, they'll blame these protests for the spread, and it will muddy the waters. We're both on the same side here, I just think you shouldn't have went to the park. It's good you're passionate about it as well, but please think about your actions before you attend the next one. It's up to you if you want to go, but there must be a better way of showing your support than meeting up in a big group. by Snoith (Sun 7th Jun 2020 8:13pm)
  • It would make the news if everyone had done it instead of going down the park though. Might have got a few extra folk in the area aware as well. Anyway, no point arguing about it, I don't think we're going to see eye to eye on it. I agree with everything else apart from going down the park bit. As I said, there's other ways to protest. I've lost family to Covid, and I know other friends who have as well. I've got mates in the NHS, who are risking their own lives and the lives of their families every day. Funerals are limited to 15 people, they're pretty horrible experiences for the families. It's hard to see people gathered in big groups like this, even if it is for a this reason. Your comment earlier annoyed me, wasn't really necessary to say "a few covid deaths", it's fine till it affects you personally. Dying of covid is fucking horrible, it slowly suffocates you. You should watch this if you get a chance. https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/m000j49v I guess I don't want families to have to go through the horror of watching their relatives die a horrendous death. If there wasn't a pandemic I'd have been there too. by Snoith (Sun 7th Jun 2020 8:49pm)
  • Ah yer just a selfish wank then, as you were by Snoith (Sun 7th Jun 2020 9:00pm)
  • Don't get involved with them, I ended up in an endless arguement with them on another post earlier, kept posting links and big quotes to back up their point that were barely relevant. They're not for listening. No one on here has disagreed with the movement, just said folk shouldn't gather in big groups due to a deadly virus, and this trumpet keeps having a go at them. by Snoith (Sun 7th Jun 2020 9:23pm)
  • Eh, aye he was "In the House of Commons Gladstone was initially a disciple of High Toryism and, as a scion of one of the largest slave-holding families in the world,[15] he opposed both the abolition of slavery[16] and factory legislation. Gladstone's father was a slave owner; in 1834, when slavery was abolished, he helped his father obtain £106,769 in official reimbursement by the government for the 2,508 slaves he owned across nine plantations in the Caribbean.[17]" He also didn't like catholics much "In 1838 Gladstone nearly ruined his career when he tried to force a religious mission upon the Conservative Party. His book The State in its Relations with the Church argued that England had neglected its great duty to the Church of England. He announced that since that church possessed a monopoly of religious truth, nonconformists and Roman Catholics ought to be excluded from all government positions." by Snoith (Mon 8th Jun 2020 12:09am)
  • Think the main reason is that a lot of people renting are students or flat sharing and are maybe only looking for short term lets 6/12 months. Getting a new sofa / wardrobes / beds / white goods etc isn't too appealing to that group due to the expense and then hassle of what to do with it once the let is over. More convenient to move into somewhere that already has the stuff (even if it is rubbish). The majority of places will be furnished or part furnished tbh, just the way the rental market is in Glasgow, very student centric. No harm asking the landlord though. You might have more luck with unfurnished places if you look outside the city centre. by Snoith (Fri 12th Jun 2020 8:14pm)
  • DELETED Do you know that's an offensive term you've used in your heading? You can't make fun of someone for having a small mind and then use a term like that. Just letting you know. by Snoith (Sun 14th Jun 2020 6:39pm)
  • DELETED Well, naw it's no, it's pretty well accepted you don't go around using that word, not entirely sure you're plugged in right if you go around using it. If you are using it and you know the origins of it you're a waste of air. by Snoith (Sun 14th Jun 2020 6:44pm)

Cos "every cunt used it", or "all my pals use it". Still doesn't stop it being offensive. It's offensive on a number of levels and to different groups. Your lack of awareness isn't an excuse. Also no need to be a complete dick about it, just pointing it out. It's a racial slur, and also a derogatory term relating to down syndrome. Doesn't just mean "stupid cunt". by Snoith (Sun 14th Jun 2020 7:04pm)

  • I take offence at Tunnocks as they donated to the "No" campaign during the Independence voting times, and the owner was very much in the No camp, kept saying it would be bad for the economy etc. Ruined all their products for me. Stupid Tunnocks. by Snoith (Fri 19th Jun 2020 8:59pm)
  • I could probably start a separate post about this, but what are peoples thoughts on faith based schools? I've always thought it's going to be one of those things we look back at in 20 years and think, "wtf did we let that happen for?". Kids being separated at age 5 based on which religion their parents believe in is just madness in my book, and can't help things with situations like we see today, especially the sectarianism. I often feel no Scottish government would want to touch it with a barge poll as I still think most people don't have an issue with them and would be angry if they were abolished. by Snoith (Fri 19th Jun 2020 9:07pm)
  • Didn't realise they did them, thanks for the recommendation. Bit of good news! by Snoith (Fri 19th Jun 2020 9:13pm)
  • I never mentioned Catholic schools, I said faith Schools. I also never mentioned anti catholic bigotry. I said sectarianism. I'm also talking about Scotland specifically, there are many problems around the world, but I was focusing on a problem that was being discussed regarding Scotland specifically. I went to a catholic school right enough, and I would say it felt weird to be sent to a different school to the kids that lived next door based on my religion aye. Same way as I would feel weird if I got sent to a different school based on the colour of my skin or whether or not my parents believed in Scottish independence or whatever. I'm not sure what you're getting at tbh, you've went off on a defensive tangent. Just for the the record, I'm a celtic fan, and I went to a catholic school. by Snoith (Fri 19th Jun 2020 9:52pm)
  • That's a bit of a stupid way to approach things tbh, "I'm not looking at that problem until they look at that other problem". Not going to progress much as a society if everyone is like that. You sound exactly like someone saying, "until they sort out catholic schools, we'll keep marching". Sounds stupid that eh? Sounds like someone being totally unreasonable. Anyway, it's off topic, I was originally talking about faith schools, and their effects on all people of Scotland. You've said there: > It’s a school. It’s not much of a difference from any other Well, I went to one, and it is different. 95% of the time it's the same, but then 5% of the time it's very different. Also, when your pals have to go to a different school but live next door to you, that's weird no? Teachers who haven't been signed off by a priest and attended a 6 month course can't teach in a catholic school. So that's pretty strange, so nah. Not really much of a difference. by Snoith (Fri 19th Jun 2020 10:13pm)
  • Right, firstly, you were the one that was mentioning football. To the other poster. I was probably wrong to bring it up, but thought from your tone in your other comment, it would somehow be important to you. Second, yes, anti catholic bigotry is a problem. Anti protestant bigotry is as big a problem, so is Islamophobia, and anti-semitism. You can't fix one side without fixing the others I'm afraid. Can you honestly say, that having a different school based on your faith doesn't in some part play a role in sectarianism in Scotland? There are literally schools, that have big fences between them on a shared campus, that separate kids based on their religion. I'm sorry but that's fucking wild. It really is. If you separated kids based on eye colour, the problem would be the same, as soon as you start separating people based on anything, divisions arise. I'll say again, I'm not blaming catholic schools. It's all faith schools. I believe that segregating kids at aged 5 to 18, based on religion fuels sectarianism in Scotland. You're entitled to your opinion on the matter, but don't have a go at someone for having a different opinion. by Snoith (Fri 19th Jun 2020 10:46pm)
  • Have you heard of Northern Ireland per chance? by Snoith (Fri 19th Jun 2020 10:51pm)
  • Fair enough, I can understand why they were founded, I just wonder how much they are needed now, and to what extent having them separate will fuel division. Some schools that are non dom do have links, others have none at all. I'm not suggesting that they teach bigotry at school btw, just that separating kids like that can cause divisions, by not mixing with people from other backgrounds. Like, if you go home and hear bigoted beliefs from your parents, and so do a bunch of other kids, and they're in school repeating it, with little or no objections cos it's about people on the other side of the fence, n the people are on the other side of the fence hearing the opposite bigoted views, and never mixing with the other side. That would potentially cause an issue. I also don't see the benefit of them? What's the reason for having them nowadays? by Snoith (Sat 20th Jun 2020 12:25am)

  • As much as I think this is a good idea, I'd imagine the kids that already don't drop litter would be up for it, and the ones that are wee arseholes would just fuck about or skip the class, or end up doing a runner or no picking anything up. by Snoith (Mon 22nd Jun 2020 11:11pm)
  • I think it would be a good idea for folk who are currently out of work or looking for a job (job seekers allowance) or whatever, to have to spend at least a few hours every couple of weeks (let's say 4 hours every fortnight - not too much on ask) out picking up litter, or helping clean graffiti, or something for the community. Could also give them the option to increase their hours if they wanted in exchange for extra allowance. They do this with the young out of work folk in Spain, I've seen them out at 7am picking up litter, it's not frowned upon or anything and it's really appreciated by the local community and by those doing it. It also wouldn't take away from current council jobs as those who currently do that job could be team leaders for those who are doing it while job seeking. by Snoith (Mon 22nd Jun 2020 11:16pm)

  • I've read this book before (Safe; by Chris Ryan), and it's got some good advice on staying "safe" in a number of situations, some chapters about staying safe on the street, as well as a bunch of other situations I'd hope no one else finds themselves in. It might be a wee bit OTT tbh, but does have some good advice. It's on Kindle, or Audible if that's more your thing. https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/1473664357/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_e9F-Eb0THPC15 Another thing you can carry is an umbrella with a big wooden handle, quite handy for self defence if you need it. by Snoith (Mon 29th Jun 2020 3:54pm)
  • I think they should make them mandatory (except for under 5s and for legitimate health reasons), but for some reason there doesn't seem to be an appetite to actually enforce it. They've definitely said, "you should" be wearing one in enclosed spaces like shops, and "must" on public transport, but think most people won't wear one until the government actually enforces it and ensures that companies shouldn't allow people in who aren't wearing them. I know it only slightly reduces the risk of it spreading, but surely we can all wear mask for a few months. It's hardly a big ask. If it gets us all back to normal even a bit more quickly and reduces the deaths I can't see why they wouldn't. Think there's still the classic, "I'm no wearing one, I'll look stupid, no one else is" belief going on with quite a few people. by Snoith (Tue 30th Jun 2020 4:52pm)
  • I'd imagine they'd do it the same way they do it with the ban on drinking alcohol on trains after 9pm. Stick up a bunch of notices and make lots of announcements, as it's a condition of travel if you're caught doing it you can be fined and the transport police notified. I'd imagine that would be enough to have most people comply. Along side that they could enforce it the same way they do with tickets, so at bigger stations staff might be able to stop you from going through the barrier if you've not got a mask, and on the train if you're not wearing a mask the conductor could advise you on the rules, if you don't want to put the mask on, then the train stops at the next station until you exit (same as they do with tickets at the moment). It's obviously not perfect and you'll get people who still try and get on without them, but I'd imagine the vast majority would be sensible and if you were insisting on not wearing one then getting chucked off the train before your stop a few times would make you think about wearing one. They could also try the Spanish method, they don't really have a conductor, it's more a security guard/bouncer (who had a big baton for some reason). They seem to have the power to physically remove people from the train. by Snoith (Wed 1st Jul 2020 12:27am)
  • True, I get why the staff and the unions don't want to, and that's a good point about going through the carriage less. Tough one I suppose. I honestly though more people would comply with it. by Snoith (Wed 1st Jul 2020 12:38am)
  • I'd suggest yeah, the employees of the shop. I've worked in plenty of shops before that have a no shirts/no shoes no service policy. Some places would be lucky enough to have security, but if they don't then the best you've got is to refuse service and ask them to leave. Had it loads of times on sunny days, people stoating in steaming with taps aff then having to ask them to leave or put a top on. Most people would be a bit annoyed about being asked, or give a bit of chat back, but they all left or stuck a top back on. If all the shops do it, then people will get pretty sick of not getting served and put a mask on. Bus drivers again, yeah, unfortunately hold up the bus until they stick on a mask or get back off. Same logic. Same way as if someone doesn't have their fare. Don't see many bus drivers letting people off with the fare. by Snoith (Wed 1st Jul 2020 12:35am)

  • Buy a good dehumidifier, not one of the wee ones, at least a 10 litre one, preferably bigger. I got one about 4 years ago and I couldn't live without it. Something like this https://www.very.co.uk/swan-20l-dehumidifier/1600423623.prd I know the €170 seems like a big outlay, but they last for years, and they are much cheaper than running the heating (which doesn't get rid of the moisture anyway) and well cheaper than using a tumble dryer (which doesn't reduce the dampness or take away moisture from showers or cooking). I have mine on about 6/8 hours a day and it made so much difference. No more condensation; no mold, able to dry towels in about 12 hours on the rack. Honestly do it, you won't regret it. Also don't bother with those little units, or disposable ones, they're a waste of money. by Snoith (Tue 7th Jul 2020 1:55pm)

Or maybe it's mice/rats/birds/other in the walls, all can make a significant amount of noise that you might not hear in your flat. Tbh, sounds like she's just one of those pain in the arse neighbours. I've lived in about 10 different houses/flats over the years, with loads of different neighbours- only 2 neighbor's I've ever had a problem with? Women over 55ish living on their own. (Actually, slight lie, I mean long term/major problems) What age is she? I know it's probably un PC to ask, but both my problem neighbours were older women, and they both seemed to have similar mental problems which I think came down to a mix of mental issues and loneliness, think sometimes the living on their own thing amplifies anything that happens, and the loneliness thing I think causes them to crave the interaction side of things, even if it is negative). by Snoith (Tue 14th Jul 2020 1:33am)

So looks like my price hike is going to be more than just the first cut. Fair enough I suppose, it is going to take them a bit longer to do it, although they've definitely got people over a barrel for a few months at least, I imagine they'll be booked solid for a while due to the number of people needing a cut and the reduced capacity. I suppose I've saved 4 months haircut money, so not too bothered about paying a bit extra for a while. by Snoith (Tue 14th Jul 2020 10:29am)

  • Depends where you look, obviously there are some big price differences between different areas. A flat in Ibrox is going to cost considerably less than a flat in Partick or the southside. An example of a flat in the southside might be: 2 bed tenement flat in Shawlands - decent home report, move in condition - offers over £170k. When you look at the actual valuation, it's probably going to be 15/20k above that - so value £190k. To actually be in with a chance of getting the flat? You'd have to be offering at least £10k over the home report/value, so like say £210k would give you a half chance. So not only do you need the deposit to cover the £190k mortgage, (10% would be £19k) you'd also need the £20k to go above the valuation, and the stamp duty and legal fees, so maybe around £43k in the bank ready to go. Some places/properties are a bit less competitive like parts of the east end, out towards Maryhill, Ibrox etc..., or you could go for a place that need a bit of work, but you'd be very lucky to get many places that don't go over the valuation and was in decent nick. You hardly ever see a fixed price, which I find weird, cos people are surely more likely to be able to get a higher mortgage than they would be to have an extra £20k to throw at it above the home report, but hey, I'm no expert. by Snoith (Fri 4th Sep 2020 1:21pm)

If it's leasehold the landlord might need to get permission from the freeholder. by Snoith (Sun 6th Sep 2020 10:50pm)

If the current restrictions are in place, you wouldn't be allowed to have much interaction with other groups in a pub for instance. Clubs and gigs probably won't be open/on. Who knows, if the 2nd wave is still occurring (due to interactions people have been having over Xmas and new year) the pubs might actually be shut again. • The number 1 reason is that it's fun, Number 2 is that it is legal (as in, if other things which are currently illegal were legalised, some people would probably use those instead of drinking), and if alcohol was illegal people would drink less. Then you've got the other reasons: Tastes good, it's relaxing, lowers you inhibitions, it's social, helps you make friends, feels nice, can have health benefits, reduces stress and anxiety...and many more. There are drawbacks of course, if you overdo it, then you'll have a range of problems. by Snoith (Mon 28th Sep 2020 11:26am)
  • Yeah, so it's about reducing the spread of covid 19 which has killed over a million people worldwide and we have no vaccine for. The schools being back is probably widely agreed as being one of the most important factors when it comes to keeping the economy going, and not fucking up a generations education. The pubs having some restrictions on them to reduce the spread in these areas, like shutting earlier and limited group size. Each extra thing that opens up, increases the risk. So a bit like, if you have one drink before driving, you might be fine to drive, but if you have 3 drinks, that exponentially increases the risk. Are you asking why the pubs can't open normally? As in we only have two options, open everything normally, or close everything? Opening schools is vastly more important than opening pubs from 10pm to 12 and having big groups in there when they are open. It's pretty simple really. by Snoith (Tue 29th Sep 2020 1:15pm)
  • Yeah the schools are a shambles tbf, there was never going to be a way of sending all the kids back at once and keep them socially distanced. I didnt realise they were letting them out of school grounds at lunchtimes though. Feel like the government and directors of education could be doing a lot more to lower the spread in schools. • I don't know if it's a good or a bad thing, is it a necessary thing? I'd say yes. I think if everyone had followed the current rules correctly, we probably wouldn't need to bring in these measures, but have a feeling that most people bent the rules when it suited them (and quite a few who completely ignored them). I've seen a few groups obviously breaking the 2 household rules, and previously the 3 household rule, and loads breaking the 2m rule (in fairness that's hard to maintain all the time, but obviously some people try harder than others at that one). Big groups of of 6 different households at a table then mixing with the next table etc was always going to cause issues. Every time I've driven past bananamoon it looks like a free for all. Seen some restaurants/cafes/bars that were following the rules/some that paid lip service/some that didn't seem to care. Seen some people having people over to their houses/flats and not caring about rules, heard of parties going on. Genuinely feel bad for the business and people who tried their best to follow the rules, and a bit pissed of at those who didn't and are now moaning about the new restrictions. I think the 16 day lockdown is necessary to try to reduce transmission rate (if this doesn't work we're in real trouble, as it will need a stricter lockdown) - and these measures are to prevent having to close schools and other workplaces. The decision is based on a big increase in transmission and if it continues it will overwhelm ICUs and then any emergency medical condition becomes much more life threatening. It's also trying to lower the spread as if it keeps increasing it could be very difficult to bring it back under control without a very strict 3/4 week circuit breaker lockdown. Heard people say, but the Sweden model is working - thing is, as a country we're nowhere near the levels of social compliance that swedes are, so like a naughty wean we need more supervision/rules. Also Sweden have a much higher death rate to countries of similar sizes. It was also (and still is) a massive gamble to take on a virus we still know very little about. by Snoith (Fri 9th Oct 2020 12:49am)
  • There are quite a few reasons why they've said cafes can stay open, the main one was to help prevent social isolation for people who need the contact. Sturgeon said yesterday that if there's confusion around it then unfortunately they'll have to come down on the side of preventing the spread of covid and close them all. Cafes are usually small, seat less than or around 20, you can't usually pre-book a table (so less likely to have a big group of 6), less likely to have 6 people from different areas and households turn up at a cafe to meet for dinner than at a restaurant. (I know that was against the rules anyway, didnt stop people doing it). The queues actually show it's working, all of those people outside would be inside somewhere else, and there's probably quite a majority of people not wanting to wait in queues who would've went to a restaurant if it was open. They're not just leaving cafes open for a laugh, it's so there's at least an option for people to meet if they feel the need for interaction. Honestly, they are trying to make really hard decisions for the good of the whole country. It's not like they've not thought about it. They're trying to avoid a much harsher lockdown. by Snoith (Sat 10th Oct 2020 3:28pm)
  • Well, did a quick Google and this came up, as long as it's not this one. https://www.dailyrecord.co.uk/news/scottish-news/inside-killer-alexander-pacteaus-flat-6489472 Tbh the flats are average sale price of £140k, which is very cheap for the west end, so rental would be about £700 for a decent 2 bedroom. The street doesn't look very picturesque like many other areas in the west end, is mainly what looks like 1960s built flats, doesn't mean it isn't a nice place to live though, close to Anniesland and the west end, not too far from Maryhill.. by Snoith (Mon 12th Oct 2020 5:29pm)

Eusebi's is definitely not a wee cafe in my eyes - I'd go there for dinner in normal circumstances, where as I wouldn't book tinderbox for dinner. It's not easy, the government are only trying to do their best to protect lives, and the council are only trying to help in this instance. Not like they just turned up an shut a cafe that seats 10 people. Probably needed more clear definitions of seating capacity instead of using cafe/restaurants, and as has been said, if the virus doesn't slow down cafes will be shut next. by Snoith (Thu 22nd Oct 2020 10:12pm)

  • The logic was/is - the government are trying to limit the amount of interactions households are having to prevent the spread of coronavirus - they closed restaurants and pubs to do this. They left cafes open so that there were still places people could go to interact and prevent isolation. Obviously closing restaurants and pubs limits the interactions people are having. They have been explaining this exact thing on the daily briefings for the last 2 weeks every day. If you don't understand try watching some, or read the government advice on their website. Of course the virus isn't less likely to spread in a Costa, but it's less likely to spread as it would in a Costa AND a eusebi's AND a the counting house. • Not just the West End, anywhere with high demand tends to go for a good bit over the home report, especially if it's in good condition. Pretty much all of the West End and Southside go for more than the home report, as well as many areas in City centre and East End, it can happen when you start going further out too, so places like Giffnock, Busby, Scotstoun, Bearsden, Bishopbriggs can be a good bit over too. Anniesland isn't quite as crazy as other areas of the West End, but will still go for a bit over depending on the property Assuming you also know the bad news about mortgages, anything you go above the home report you have to pay up front, so any fees + deposit + amount over, you'll need to have in the bank. It's a shock to the system. by Snoith (Fri 6th Nov 2020 6:12pm)
  • Yeah, tbh I thought the amount on top would come down with the current situation. Got my first place a couple of years ago and it was hard going, got completely outbid on a number of occasions, people who are moving home tend to have more equity and can use some of their old homes value to outgun new buyers, sometimes you're being out bid by prospective landlords. • It's not really about precieved fairness, it's due to the number of cases in the area. Glasgow has a 7 day positive rate per 100k of 251.9, Edinburgh is almost 3 times as low at 86.3. The surrounding areas of Glasgow are also almost as high as Glasgow, the areas surrounding Edinburgh are much lower. I'm not sure what the reasons are for this, but for some reason the virus isn't spreading as much in these areas, I doubt it's one single factor, but the main way it spreads is through people interacting with people outside their household, so I'd imagine through in Edinburgh they're not mixing as much. I think Glasgow suffers from people who live in surrounding areas (North and South Lanarkshire, East and West Dunbartonshire, East Renfrewshire etc...) travelling into Glasgow for things like shopping and restaurants, and events (seen plenty of people posting they were at Glasgow or in town for lunch who don't live in the city). It's not fun, but it's not really about fairness. Edit : if you want to see the cases by area go here https://public.tableau.com/profile/phs.covid.19#!/vizhome/COVID-19DailyDashboard_15960160643010/Overview You can clearly see how much higher the central belt is, it's either level 4 now or the NHS will get overran, and the likelihood is people might ignore the rules at Christmas for whatever reason they feel justifies it, so if they don't go down now, then they'll be out of hand after Christmas. by Snoith (Fri 20th Nov 2020 7:20pm)

  • Have you looked at the infection rates in each area? Glasgow and the surrounding area a 3 times as high as Edinburgh, what would be unfair is shutting down Edinburgh. by Snoith (Fri 20th Nov 2020 7:25pm)
  • Well it's now law that you can't travel outwith your local council area, if people want to break the law to go Christmas shopping then that's up to them, absolutely stupid considering the current circumstances. If they do, and cases rise there, then guess what will happen? That's right, they'll have to shut Edinburgh as well as Glasgow, and probably up to almost Christmas by Snoith (Fri 20th Nov 2020 7:36pm)
  • Fuck, thanks for letting me know by Snoith (Fri 20th Nov 2020 8:28pm)
  • Never said you didn't follow the rules or didn't believe in the virus, just saying that when people do break them it causes us to have to take actions like a tier 4 lockdown to lower cases. by Snoith (Fri 20th Nov 2020 9:28pm)
  • Out of interest, what are you studying? by Snoith (Fri 20th Nov 2020 11:33pm)
  • I was buying beer from these guys during lockdown, was very decent. They just opened a wee bar right at Milngavie train station at the start of the year as well, which I hope survives as I only got to go once https://www.jawbrew.co.uk/ I was buying from them instead of brewdog or drygate, Brewdog I've went off of due to their nefarious business practices I'm pretty sure Drygate are still owned by Tennents and William's Bros btw, their beer is still very decent, just not as small as business as people might think, still local though by Snoith (Sat 21st Nov 2020 12:52pm)
  • Yeah they used to be at Hillington, moved to Milngavie at the start of the year and now have their own wee brewery and a bar near the station. Amazing! Yeah Wave is great, tried a few, really liked Surf as well by Snoith (Sat 21st Nov 2020 4:06pm)
  • When I was there in January the guy told me they'd been renting time at an existing one and this brewery was going to be theirs. It's not too long to Milngavie on the train from Queen Street, just over 20 mins, bar is pretty small, but worth a visit for the beer, and if you fancy a walk round the reservoir on a nice day it's not from that either by Snoith (Sat 21st Nov 2020 4:18pm)
  • I'd agree with that, I get a bit on edge near central in normal times, even during the day I pop my headphones off, there's just a dodgy vibe as soon as you get near the 4 corners, under the bridge or union Street, other bits even quite near it are fine, just around that area is dodgy by Snoith (Sat 21st Nov 2020 9:09pm)
  • I've found a good/great substitute for almost everything that's vegan, apart from cheese (and maybe eggs). Tried violife, the smoked applewood, various others. Nothing compared to a good cheese. by Snoith (Fri 27th Nov 2020 1:03pm)
  • I quite liked the Wicked dairy free vanilla ice cream, there are quite a few different ones that Tesco stock, including own brand choc ices, and a Ben & Jerry's one. As for chocolate, I usually like dark chocolate anyway, usually the higher percentage dark chocolate is dairy free, however because they are produced in a factory with other dairy products, they don't have the vegan labels on them. Asda had some good white and normal chocolate own brand bars that were quite nice, and there are some brand ones like Galaxy, but they cost a fortune for a small bar, so I went for the Asda ones. by Snoith (Fri 27th Nov 2020 1:23pm)

  • It's a tiny dose of the virus, they've not snuck polonium into it. Cmon, are you at it? I'd assume if you got cancer you'd take medical treatment for that? Or just let nature take it's course? If you smoke, eat processed meats (sausages, bacon, burgers), drink alcohol - those things will all give you cancer, seriously read about it. Even air pollution. There's a lot to be scared of in this world, but getting a wee jag that's been rigourlsly tested isn't one of them. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=zBkVCpbNnkU by Snoith (Tue 8th Dec 2020 6:55pm)
  • Most vaccines aren't given to people with serious underlying health conditions afaik, so people undergoing cancer treatment, or those with seriously compromised immune systems. That's why it is so important for people who don't have serious health problems to get vaccinated, the herd immunity only works if enough people get it. Explains it here https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=zBkVCpbNnkU by Snoith (Tue 8th Dec 2020 7:02pm)
  • What does this have to do with the sirens in Drumchapel? Are you suggesting this is somehow linked? Police Scotland did put out a statement saying it was unexplained, that generally means it's one of a few things, but usually rules out a few things too. • No, I don't think that's it. I don't think wee eejits leaving their rubbish at a bus stop is because they can't differentiate between man made items and nature, that's probably why groups of Neds don't accidently end up in the middle of the gardening section at b&q having a swally. It's far more likely they've been brought up never being told it's inappropriate behaviour for a civilised person, or they're trying to show off in front of their peers (for some reason people that leave rubbish think it's a sign of weakness to be seen putting stuff in the bin, the other idiots would probably start slagging them off for it). Could be they just don't care, or they know there will be no punishment, probably a few of those mixed in together. by Snoith (Mon 14th Dec 2020 9:00pm)
  • Definitely worth comparing a few, might be lucky and get a bit of a deal by Snoith (Mon 14th Dec 2020 10:28pm)
  • That is quite cheap to be fair, is that just the venue hire with no catering? I remember Oran Mor being a good bit pricier (but that included catering), think their package was about £7k ish for 100 people, but they do smaller weddings too. Yeah I remember looking at Kevingrove, but was way too much by Snoith (Mon 14th Dec 2020 10:36pm)
  • Actually, that is why I do it, I'm pretty sure as a child at some point I've dropped something behind me, or left an open packet of crisps lying at home and my parent, or teacher has told me that's not acceptable, and that it should be put in the bin. I'm sure I've observed other people putting stuff in the bin, and I've copied what they're doing. Then as I've got older I've been able to form my own opinions on the matter based on what I've been taught. If I grew up without anyone telling me what was and wasn't socially acceptable, then there's a fair chance I'd be a total miscreant, as would anyone. If people weren't "scalded" for stuff then I think they'd behave very differently. If there were no punishments for theft, or assault, or drink driving, a lot of people would quite happily just take what they wanted, punch people they disagreed with and then drive home drunk. We're all products of our upbringing and the society we live in, not so much of the architecture that surrounds us. by Snoith (Mon 14th Dec 2020 11:00pm)

  • Was it a legitimate courier? All I can think is that they're the fake courier, or working with someone posing as a courier. Maybe hoping that you're gullible enough to hand over the item to someone in a high viz with a van who looks legitimate, even if they haven't paid you yet. Or they transfer you the courier money and possibly the item payment then courier asks/demands cash from you, you pay them and hand over the item, and they withdraw their PayPal payment. While you call up a fake courier number and they try to scam you again. The fact that it is so convoluted looks like they're trying to use some kind of distraction tactics. Or they could just be a really difficult genuine person, alarm bells and red flags all over it though. They're up to something. by Snoith (Mon 21st Dec 2020 11:26pm)

  • I don't want you to feel bad or anything, but you probably shouldn't be feeding ducks bread if you can avoid it, not good for their health (peas, oats, sweetcorn are much better for them) https://canalrivertrust.org.uk/enjoy-the-waterways/canal-and-river-wildlife/keeping-our-ducks-healthy/why-is-bread-bad-for-ducks https://www.bbcgoodfood.com/howto/guide/what-feed-ducks by Snoith (Sat 2nd Jan 2021 7:21pm)
  • Who put the sign up? I'll agree it's a bit better than white bread, but it's still not doing them any, or much good. There are also other issues: "What the ducks don’t eat decays in the water, encouraging bacteria and algae which can poison ducks and other creatures making the water their home. Waste bread also attracts vermin such as rats." It would be fine if it was 1 in 10 people feeding them a bit of bread, but it tends to be most people in most places, and sometimes people are disposing of half a loaf. If you can give them something other than bread, it's definitely better for the ducks by Snoith (Sat 2nd Jan 2021 9:21pm)

  • Funny that face coverings are required outdoors by loads of other countries that have much lower infection rates that here though, but I'd be interested to see your research that covid doesn't spread outdoors, you should possibly show it to the WHO. Also, face coverings are advised by the Scottish government for places outdoors where social distancing isn't possible, looks like this would be one of those situations. I didn't even mention face coverings in my obviously jokey post either by Snoith (Sun 3rd Jan 2021 6:25pm)

  • In what universe have you seen the guidance that says, stay 2m away from other households, and avoid crowed areas and thought that meant meet up with people where lots of other people are meeting people and stand right next to them? You're allowed to meet another household outdoors, but it's fairly obvious you shouldn't be meeting them in a situation like this. The problem here is, that these situations are going to increase the spread, which means more lockdowns, and more restrictions, it's like shooting yourself in the foot this kind of behaviour. Look at the meeting others outdoors/socialising bit for tier 4 here: https://www.gov.scot/publications/coronavirus-covid-19-protection-levels/pages/protection-level-4/ What advert are you talking about? • That part of the West End has always been super expensive (Dowanhill). It's probably the most expensive area of the city. Also this is a well finished duplex that is over 3000 square feet (about 280 Square meters), so huge. Has 4 bedrooms, 4 bathrooms, a private garden (which is rare), a cinema room/gym and a private garage. You won't come across many properties of that size, with those features, in that area of the city, hence the price tag. For a decent sized 2 bed (about half the size of that thing) in Hyndland (with on street parking) you'd be looking at £300k, so £850k seems about right. I wouldn't call it madness, if I had the money to live there I'd love to. To buy something like that in London, in a decent area would set you back a few million, so it's not exactly London prices. by Snoith (Thu 21st Jan 2021 10:52pm)
