  • I just started with Bellahouston Road Runners a couple of weeks ago, and I think they're doing 2 sessions a week atm, in groups of up to 15 with 3 different 'bubbles' depending on pace. • So people working full time are just expected to suck it up and not do anything fun? Having restaurants open without booze til 8/9pm would have a vanishingly small effect on transmission, at this point it just seems like the government actively trying to fuck people who work full time by OldGodsAndNew (Thu 12th Nov 2020 11:09pm)

  • I run a loop going around Highburgh rd, Hyndland rd, Great Western rd, Park st and University avenue atm - they all seem to get gritted as they're all main roads, but in lockdown they're pretty quiet (esp in the evenings) so you don't have do dodge out the way of people that much. One loop is about 4k with a couple of decent hills, so you can do a few loops as a long / tempo run, or 1 or 2 as a speed/hills workout by OldGodsAndNew (Wed 13th Jan 2021 12:42pm)

  • My partner collected some stuff lately, got a slot in the middle of the day on a weekday without too much bother, think she placed the order on a Sunday then collected on the Tuesday. Probably much harder to get a slot anytime outwith normal working hours cos that's when everyone will want to go by OldGodsAndNew (Mon 1st Mar 2021 12:39pm)
  • My last flat was 5th floor and had frequent mouse appearances, now on the ground floor and never seen even a hint of any mice. Granted, that could have been because my flatmate then was a disgusting slob, and it was in Edinburgh which has a well known mouse problem across the entire city by OldGodsAndNew (Mon 1st Mar 2021 11:59pm)
  • How fit are you? I was off work last week, cycled out to Loch Lomond & back one day, ran to Loch Humphrey in the OK's another, walked all the way along the Clyde to Cunningar loop another day, etc by OldGodsAndNew (Tue 2nd Mar 2021 9:13pm)
  • The polis won't ever stop a cyclist/runner/walker, especially since both the routes I said are away from the road the entire time so you'd be out of sight to any of them. Pretty sure the rules allow you to ignore the council boundary restriction during an exercise anyway, that only applies to driving/public transport I've cycled to Balloch twice, Kilpatrick twice, Milngavie once, Aberfoyle/Callander once and ran to/from Kilpatrick during 2nd lockdown, and never had them so much as sniff at me by OldGodsAndNew (Tue 2nd Mar 2021 11:56pm)
  • Contrary to this, the junkies here that have spoken to me have been much friendlier than the ones in Edin or Aberdeen. Yesterday I went past a junkie on the gym equipment in the green, and he asked for advice how to use the machine, and when I said I dunno about weightlifting he told me not to worry and reminded me how important exercise is for overall health. • Ruchill park flagpole by OldGodsAndNew (Thu 18th Mar 2021 11:38pm)
  • Surfaced road about 1/4th of the way, then landrover track the rest with some potentially muddy bits; not really possible on a road bike, might be doable on a hybrid but 50/50 by OldGodsAndNew (Thu 18th Mar 2021 11:38pm)

  • Fuck me she's in the west end? I pay near enough double that for a 1 bed, and I thought I got a good deal Granted, my flat is pretty much pristine and the landlord sorts shit out when I ask her to, but 340 in the west end is insane by OldGodsAndNew (Tue 30th Mar 2021 8:55pm)

  • How long are you willing to sit on a train for? Pitlochry is about 1.5hrs with fairly regular direct trains; the town itself is really nice with loads of good cafes, restaraunts, local shops etc, and also a whole range of walks around town covering everything from a gentle riverside stroll to all day munro hikes Blair Atholl is similar and only about 15 minutes further along the same train line by OldGodsAndNew (Fri 16th Apr 2021 12:37pm)
  • I just went for a walk around the Kelvingrove area at lunch, and loads of places have ad-hoc outside seating that wasn't there before, reckon it'll be easy to get a space somewhere, at least during the week by OldGodsAndNew (Mon 26th Apr 2021 12:01pm)

  • Good luck getting a table though, they're walk ins only so expect to queue Baffo is on the other side of Kelvingrove park, (usually) less rammed and better IMO by OldGodsAndNew (Wed 28th Apr 2021 10:49pm)

  • My gf, age 22 with no underlying conditions etc got her 2nd dose today. Didn't even ask for it, the GP just phoned her up and said she was on the list so she took it. Honestly no idea what's going on, cos she got it before her 50 y/o parents with underlying conditions did by OldGodsAndNew (Wed 12th May 2021 11:31pm)
  • Back in October I cycled from my flat in the West end to Loch Katrine, then back to Stirling and got a train home from Stirling. Think I was out from about 10am - 5pm, and if I'd allowed an extra hour or 2 (or if there had been more daylight), would defo have had time to stop & walk up Ben Aan Think it was about 72 miles of cycling by OldGodsAndNew (Fri 14th May 2021 12:57pm)

  • I work for the company doing this. It'll be years and tens of millions of pounds, nobody knows yet cos we don't know the full extent of the problem, since the type of joints that hold up the viaduct carrying the motorway are really difficult to access, inspect & fully assess. The reason you've not seen people working on it yet is because so far its all been structural investigations - the temporary propping is going in later this month + next, then the permanent repair work will start after that by OldGodsAndNew (Sun 13th Jun 2021 1:24pm)

  • Took me a bit under 3hrs to cycle from the West end to Loch Katrine on a road bike, the only real climbing is Dukes Pass which is only about 2km, and you could stop in Callander to fuel up before it by OldGodsAndNew (Wed 7th Jul 2021 11:03pm)

  • What does 'doing better financially' actually mean? If you're earning over 30k you'll be able to live comfortably in the West End in a flat of your own, less than that and you'll maybe want to look at Southside / Dennistoun by OldGodsAndNew (Wed 28th Jul 2021 11:03pm)

They *technically* can take you to court over it, but it's not worth their bother unless the invoice (not a fine) is thousands of pounds. They'll send a few scary looking letters that say stuff like "FINAL WARNING - WE WILL PURSUE LEGAL ACTION" or some crap like that which is just a tactic to frighten people into paying - chuck those letters where they rightfully belong in the bin, and they'll stop after a while by OldGodsAndNew (Fri 6th Aug 2021 3:21pm)

It'll be years and tens of millions of pounds, nobody knows yet cos they don't know the full extent of the problem, since the type of joints that hold up the viaduct carrying the motorway are extremely difficult to access, inspect & fully assess. • My landlord hasn't put the rent up a penny since covid started, and it was already cheap to begin with for a very desirable part of the West end. They respond to anything I ask immediately and with minimal questions asked, and sometimes they're even proactive without me needing to ask. The landlord lived here previously and kept the place to rent when he moved away, but his sister/cousin still lives locally and she manages it personally so no agents etc involved. Example 1 - Fridge went on the blink, still worked but was stuck on the coldest setting. I texted to tell them about it, they asked had I done the standard troubleshooting in the instructions, I confirmed yeah I had, they said OK, and a brand new top-of-the-line fridge got delivered the next day Example 2 - In September-ish they asked if we'd want a dehumidifier, cos the flat might get some damp in the Autumn; I said that It wasn't too bad at the moment so nah its fine, but they bought us one anyway; I'm guessing based on their own experience living here they knew it would be needed by OldGodsAndNew (Mon 17th Jan 2022 3:19pm)
  • I live in the West End. I love the area and love the flat, but I don't plan to live here longer than 5-7 years, so I don't want to buy. Before here I lived in Edinburgh for a few years, and before that Aberdeen. Obviously I've rented the entire time, and wherever I move onto after Glasgow I'll likely rent, cos I don't want to be tied to any particular location for 20+ years and also I like being able to just phone the landlord whenever there's a problem and let them deal with it. Point being, that renting is what some people want & need, when they're staying in a place for more than a few months but less than multiple decades by OldGodsAndNew (Mon 17th Jan 2022 3:28pm)

This isn't a problem unique to Glasgow or any other specific location. • It works for buses in Edinburgh. Lothian buses are 90% owned by Edinburgh Council with the rest split between Mid/East/West Lothian councils, and it's a billion times better than anything we have over here. Buses run frequently, go everywhere, turn up on time (including through the night), are clean and well maintained, and have a flat fixed fare regardless of what journey you're taking. Also if you pay contactless for multiple journeys in a day it's capped at the price of a day ticket. ALSO, if you live there and get the monthly pass, it costs £45/month and covers all travel on all routes, including the night buses and airport buses. • I used to work for the company doing this; Basically the viaduct carrying the motorway is fucked, and it's a giant pain in the ass to fix. They cheaped out on the design & construction when it was built in the 70s, so the joints where the piers (big vertical pillars) connect to the sections of viaduct are degrading faster than expected, and a routine structural inspection around Feb last year basically said "you have to do something about this right now otherwise the motorway will collapse" - that's why they put out the lane closures to reduce load on it. Then because of their cheapness, those type of joints are particularly difficult to access & fully inspect/test to determine how bad the degradation actually was (and hence how much repair work was needed). I left before the full investigation was done, but I heard it was bad enough that they gave some serious thought to completely demolishing and rebuilding that bit of the motorway. Long & short, don't expect it to be removed any time soon (probably 2 more years at least I reckon), but be glad they're doing it, otherwise we could have had a Genoa-type bridge collapse by OldGodsAndNew (Fri 5th Aug 2022 12:27pm)

  • Running is v popular these days, to the point of most races of the common distances (10k & HM, 5k not so much thanks to Parkrun) selling out or coming close to it, especially in big cities. Lesson for future ones, the sooner you enter the better. Really popular races will have tiers of pricing based on how early you enter, i.e. the earlier the cheaper; and really really popular ones (London marathon and such) do a lottery, where you pretty much have to sign up within minutes of the entries opening and even then you're not guaranteed a place (unless you're really fast or raise a shit load of money for charity) If you want to do the Half marathon you can have my place, I can't really be arsed with it. • That inquiry was a waste of time and spunked millions of it's own without producing any meaningful results. So long as the clients and contractors involved in construction projects are motivated by £££ above all else (which, spoiler, they all are) then they're always going to be overly optimistic about how quickly and cheaply they can do stuff, which in turn causes fuckups when they try to do things "efficiently" that end up leading to time & cost overruns which sometimes lead to bits of the project getting cut. Inquiries and investigations can root out specific problems on a given project, but it's like playing whac-a-mole and something else will inevitably happen on the next one. Though foreign students may be different as they'll have trouble getting guarantors, references etc, and maybe more likely to want the east of a single payment (which can come from an overseas account) and a building manager who deals with everything I do think that purpose built student accommodation should pay some kind of tax to the council though. Also doesn't help that a lot of the rich areas (Giffnock, Bearsden, Bishopbriggs, etc) got carved out of Glasgow for administrative purposes despite still being part of the city proper, so their well-off residents use the city's roads, parks, public transit, museums, sports facilities, and such despite paying not a penny of tax to the city by OldGodsAndNew (Fri 17th Mar 2023 2:16pm)

Glenfiddich and the main sights of the cairngorms are both about 45mins drive from Inverness, so the smarter thing to do would be stay 2 nights in Edin and explore the city, then drive up to Inverness, stay 2 nights there doing the Glenfiddich the first day and Cairngorms the second, then after finishing the cairngorms drive back to the central belt in the evening, drop your hire car and get an airport hotel, then fly back the next day by OldGodsAndNew (Mon 20th Mar 2023 3:25pm)

  • Pretty niche, but back in 2008 a group of Eritrean elite runners came to Edinburgh to represent their country at the world cross country championships; they didn't perform brilliantly against the Kenyans, Ethiopians, etc and so their authorities told them they'd be punished when they got home (Eritrea is only slightly better than NK when it comes to human rights, and apparently the punishment on offer was conscription) So 6 of them decided fuck that, stayed in Scotland and claimed asylum - since they knew nobody and nothing but the clothes they were wearing, the only contact they had was a guy from Shettleston Harriers who'd asked them for autographs at the championships, so they got in touch with him and all turned up at club training one day, and the club helped them get accomodation, permanent residency, etc etc; they all now represent Scotland sometimes in National/European championships and have had a massive impact on the Scottish club running scene by OldGodsAndNew (Fri 26th May 2023 10:29pm)

  • I graduated in mech eng 5 years ago, started in road construction as a graduate but now in power transmission (i.e. adjacent to renewables) which I enjoy infinitely more, and nobody has ever given half of a rats arse about my degree beyond the initial "have you got one?" When I applied for the graduate programme. I don't even think I ever had to prove my degree by submitting any documentation to the company. Don't make a specific company your goal; I know a lot of ex-Scottish power people and apparently they're one of the worse employers in the industry - good pay but they treat you like shite. Plenty of other companies involved in renewables design & construction so keep your options open. Also which type of engineer do you want to be? There's design engineers who sit in an office doing calculations and making drawings, or site engineers who are out there supervising the construction and taking measurements/etc, and there's little crossover between the 2 types by OldGodsAndNew (Wed 12th Jul 2023 8:50pm)

The biggest problem with doing it in Glasgow would likely be trying to get the 8-12 different councils involved to agree on things. • The Expressway is the most brainless of all the Glasgow urban planners in the 60s moments, even more than the M8 - All it does is induce demand, cause accidents and completely block the West end off from the river It needs to be torn down all the way to Crow Road and the footprint of it rebuilt as a regular throughfare street like Argyle Street by OldGodsAndNew (Tue 17th Oct 2023 10:55pm)
  • Did this in the midst of Covid - definitely prefer it here. • I dunno why the council won't open up the Kelvin way to more outdoor vendors. There's only 2 food trucks ATM, one seems to be open randomly a couple times a week and the other (MacTassos) is always rammed. There's easily the footfall there for a few more, especially in summer & weekends. They did it a couple months ago but only for 1 weekend and it cost £13 to get in, and it was still really busy by OldGodsAndNew (Sun 19th Nov 2023 6:31pm)

  • 60 each or altogether? My birthday is the week before Xmas and last year we went to Brett on Great Western for a birthday meal out - not strictly Christmas food, but had a Christmassy atmosphere without being tacky, and the food was unbelievable. Think we spent about £100 each including drinks (so probs £85 without drinks) - if you can stretch to that I'd go for something like that by OldGodsAndNew (Sat 25th Nov 2023 11:25am)
  • Sorry typo in my original - we spend £100 total including drinks, £85 total on food Smokin Fox beside central is my go to spot for "decent but not fancy" - it's a nice wee pub that's usually busy even on weeknights, and the back area is a sort-of restaraunt area (that takes reservations) that does very good food for for probably £20-25 each (so you just about get a pint each aswell) - can't see on their social medias if they have a christmas menu, but their normal menu is regular pub food by OldGodsAndNew (Sat 25th Nov 2023 11:38am)
