  • Some brilliant information and support on this thread - makes me proud to be Glaswegian AND a decent landlord. There are, unfortunately, a lot of scumbag landlords out there which is why these laws are in place but in most instances they offer protection and certainty for all parties. Knowing your rights isn't "playing the system", it's protecting yourself against this sort of bad experience. I sincerely hope you find somewhere better and enjoy your time here. by TheRealDanSch (Thu 1st Jul 2021 12:02pm)
  • Was the Moon also Rooftops and, latterly, Victoria's on the top floor of a building in Sauchiehall St? Weird rabbit thing at the top of the stairs and always someone outside in fancy dress "enticing" people in? by TheRealDanSch (Sun 31st Oct 2021 9:33pm)
  • My brother-in-law walked Glasgow to Uddingston after losing all his money in a casino, only to find a sneaky 20 in his pocket the next morning... That's gotta hurt. Not directly from a night out but recall falling out with a girlfriend (after a night out) and walking Airdrie to Uddingston in torrential rain when I was younger. Funny how Jack Daniels and youthful anger can drive you forwards whatever the weather! by TheRealDanSch (Sun 31st Oct 2021 9:38pm)
  • If you're using PAYG, it'll deduct the right amount for travel and parking, capped for the day. If you're travelling on a season ticket you'll need to buy a "season add on" at the ticket machine or office to allow you to exit the car park. by TheRealDanSch (Mon 1st Nov 2021 8:15pm)
  • I took Lees Snowballs over to a business meeting in Slovakia years ago. No pressure-related mishaps but it was summer and about 40 degrees so they ended up with very little structural integrity. Keep them cool and you'll be fine, I'd think. by TheRealDanSch (Wed 1st Dec 2021 11:30am)

  • I'm a landlord - put rent up in one of my houses this year as new tenants were moving in and worse properties in the area were advertised at higher rates, but I've never put the rent up for a sitting tenant. Got another place that's had the same tenant for 4 years, never increased but actually reduced after a year because we sacked the letting agent and therefore were facing money each month. It's not always cheap to get new people in, and a month's void is expensive in the grand scheme of things so if tenants are no hassle and paying regularly, why try and bleed them dry? by TheRealDanSch (Wed 12th Jan 2022 11:39am)

  • I'd say yes - I'm sure it would be appreciated but isn't expected of you. We always try to keep the nursery staff on our side - they're looking after your most precious possession, after all. We've done leaving gifts in the past for staff who had looked after our kids, it shows them and the other people they work with that they're valued. by TheRealDanSch (Thu 27th Jan 2022 9:21am)
  • Just make sure you change all your folding money before you come up... Folk largely have an issue with the media and the government, not usually individuals. Decide before you come up whether you prefer Rangers or Celtic and let people hate you for that instead 😂 by TheRealDanSch (Sun 13th Feb 2022 12:24am)

  • "Where do you stay?" means where are you currently living. I worked in NW England for a while and was asked "are you staying down here" by a colleague and I was saying "aye, I've rented a flat" but they were asking if my transfer was permanent. Also, when Scottish people say "up the road" it means "home". This can take the form of "Could you give me a lift up the road" to a house a mile away or "Is Jimmy coming up the road this weekend?" referring to a friend who's currently working in London. by TheRealDanSch (Sun 13th Feb 2022 12:36am)

  • That's absolutely not true. You could get in without a weapon as long as you promised to go to the pool tables and get tooled up with a cue - or a sock with a ball in it. • For a couple of reasons, it is worth maxing out your employer's matched amount for your pension and then masking some additional payments (AVCs or Additional Voluntary Contributions) to reduce your taxable salary. You're setting yourself up for the future and can justifiably say that your taxable salary is below the £40k threshold, as that's how the HMRC will see it. Well done on the payrise - just don't go mental with it! by TheRealDanSch (Wed 20th Apr 2022 11:41am)
  • Same as any new place, join clubs, get involved in community projects, speak to your neighbours etc. I moved to down to Manchester many years back and got a flat share - one of my flatmates was a keen footballer so played 5s and 7s with him, the other was an enthusiastic drinker so that quickly got my social life up and running! by TheRealDanSch (Mon 2nd May 2022 8:25am)

  • Agreed - perhaps my own personal bias but I'm not just going to phone a number to ask about a car, I want detail before I take the next step. Put it on Gumtree or Autotrader etc. that way you're not relying on the right person walking/driving the right route to see your future classic. by TheRealDanSch (Thu 7th Jul 2022 8:57am)

  • Personally, I want to see research and evidence, but appreciate that this is time consuming. Rob Dix and Rob Bence do a lot of stuff about property, investing and the economy. They typically present a viewpoint, provide the sources or evidence they've used and often discuss the alternatives or counter arguments. This gives me some faith in the integrity of what I'm reading/hearing, rather than some half-baked, emotive piece that just raises more questions if you're reasonably intelligent. E.g. there's a story doing the rounds about a lad who left his missus for a Ukrainian woman that was living with them. He's reportedly now her full time carer after she "went partially blind in one eye". 1. How is that a story in the first place? 2. Why does being partially blind in one eye but otherwise able require a carer? 🤔 by TheRealDanSch (Thu 7th Jul 2022 1:16pm)

  • Glasgow Caley University is right next to Buchanan Bus Station so you've got lots of options for living a bit further out and commuting in daily (without it costing an arm and a leg or taking hours). In particular Stagecoach run a lot of Express services from commuter towns into BBS. You also have Cowcaddens Subway Station, which opens up West End and some South Side areas for commuting by Subway. I wouldn't recommend Jamaica St area, it's not close enough to the University to justify the unpleasantness of the immediate surrounds. by TheRealDanSch (Mon 11th Jul 2022 5:03pm)
  • Most cost effective is ventilation - trickle vents open in your windows and get the windows opened when you can (at opposite sides of the flat to encourage air flow through the rooms). Dehumidifier will definitely reduce moisture as others have said, but can be a bit power-hungry! As others mention, the efficiency of your heating will improve with a dehumidifier as dry air heats faster (consider how quickly you can heat air (e.g. in the oven or with a hair dryer vs.heating the same volume of water). Don't dry your clothes on the radiator, it's not heat but air flow that will dry them. Ideally, dry things outside when the weather allows. If you can, get an airer and put it in a room with the window open and shut the door to keep the rest of the place warm (towel along the bottom of the door to reduce draughts). Avoid putting big items of furniture like wardrobes against external walls (if possible) as the lack of airflow can harbour the moisture as the wall is cooler than the air in the room. Have the extractor running or a window open when you bathe/shower, and immediately squeegee the shower screen/ bath etc. - and moisture you can run down the drain prevents you having to extract it from the air later. If you get wet windows, squeegee them in the morning, mop up the water and dry the towel outside or in the room with an open window. I'm lucky to be in a well-insulated new-build now but my first place was a 1930s 4-in-a-block with single glazing and you've just taken me back to those winter days of frost on the inside of the glass and the windowsills flooding when it melted because the weep vents to the outside were frozen over! Great times... by TheRealDanSch (Tue 26th Jul 2022 10:47pm)

  • If it's a uPVC door, you could try adjusting it yourself. There are usually adjustment screws underneath the hinges - YouTube has some helpful videos. Failing that, a cheap roll of draught excluder tape will keep the cold draught out. Whilst it may seem counter-intuitive to be stopping draughts and also being told to increase ventilation, i guess the key here is getting ventilation when and where you need it, so you're not constantly losing heat and wasting energy. by TheRealDanSch (Wed 27th Jul 2022 1:24pm)
  • I'm having similar issues getting the loan from Home Energy Scotland paid - it's been "on the next payment run" for weeks now, and it was incredibly frustrating at the start. Really didn't feel like we're being encouraged to go down this route, even when the government narrative is all about going green and reducing carbon by TheRealDanSch (Thu 28th Jul 2022 1:08pm)
  • Tough to go off-grid in Scotland due to low sunlight hours in winter and the need to therefore have light and heat longer in the day. Shite thing is that you're still paying 50p/day standing charge for electric, so there's a reasonable chance that a good chunk of what you currently pay isn't even going towards your usage. And they'll happily shaft you for disconnecting and reconnecting if you get ideas about off-grid for the summer! We got panels in Feb, remains to be seen if they'll save us anything but were more about the environment and to future-proof against price rises in future. Didn't get batteries as the business case just didn't stack up for me. We used LiveEco and can definitely recommend the service (and were one of the cheapest). by TheRealDanSch (Thu 28th Jul 2022 1:05pm)
  • I've only got a few months' of data but happy to give you a comparison once the companies have done an assessment for you. Remember that if you can use it while the sun shines, you'll save 29p/kwH or whatever your rate is, but if you can't, you'll only get 7.5p for export (and only if you're grid-tied). Interestingly, I've realised my daily use is pretty much bugger all (laptops and lighting when working from home) 95% of the time, punctuated by short bursts when the dishwasher, kettle, toaster, oven, washing machine etc. go on. So your usage might be 20kwH in a day, but don't expect to offset all of it with panels. by TheRealDanSch (Thu 28th Jul 2022 4:47pm)
  • 5 year interest-free loan up to 5k for panels and batteries and the VAT is suspended on panels AND batteries but only as part of a full installation (not adding batteries later) by TheRealDanSch (Thu 28th Jul 2022 5:09pm)
  • I'm in Airdrie, been here 10 years and it's decent. Plenty of new-build houses and estates with families and young kids. When we bought, the same house was about 30% more in "Uddingston" - what the rest of us know as Maryville/Baillieston/Calderpark Zoo. Airdrie has a train line to Edinburgh and Glasgow, the other place had pylons, two motorways and the smell of a landfill site going for it! Everywhere has its good and bad, there are bits of Airdrie that I'd avoid and there are bits that are sound. Same with everyone else I've ever been... Depends on where your priorities lie. by TheRealDanSch (Thu 28th Jul 2022 8:23pm)

  • But aren't landlords likely to be selling to people who were previously renting? Difficult to know what the actual cause is, but I'm glad I'm not looking for a place at the moment, looks like a terrible time for it! by TheRealDanSch (Wed 3rd Aug 2022 8:33pm)
  • Not sure why there's such a heavy down vote on this (presume it's the Unions comment) but you're fundamentally correct, the infrastructure does exist, it's just that private cars have had so many years of being so cheap that public transport was simply ignored/neglected. by TheRealDanSch (Tue 9th Aug 2022 1:05pm)
  • The City Council can't empty the bins or repair the roads, the public-run Subway closes at 6pm on a Sunday, the public-run railway is widely-maligned and runs a limited service on Sundays due to a lack of train drivers and the public-run ferry service is in the papers again today for failing island communities who are still waiting on new boats that are years overdue... These are who you want to procure and run a new multi-billion pound metro system? I don't have the answer, but I'm sure this isn't it. by TheRealDanSch (Tue 9th Aug 2022 1:10pm)
  • The Subway is a narrow-guage, shallow tunnel built using cut and cover in most places (i.e. they dug a big ditch, built a horseshoe of brick and backfilled with whatever shite was to hand. Because of that, it can't just be-bored to a wider tunnel and the existing just isn't practical for today's humans. Any additional loop would need to be a completely separate, standard gauge so you'd need to get off and rejoin the dinky wee original to go to the West End, Govan etc. Given that, you might as well go on the subsurface lines into Queen St or Central - they already exist, connect with the wider network and go through the City centre and beyond. by TheRealDanSch (Tue 9th Aug 2022 1:16pm)
  • In my experience, the problem with community forums on transport is the managing of expectations - almost everyone wants a service that runs pretty much from their door to wherever they need to be, whether that be a major trip attractor like the city centre, hospitals or shopping centre, or to their granny's hoose, or their office on an industrial estate etc. if it's to entice them out of their car. They also want it to be almost free! Glasgow has a great variety of options for travel, a ZoneCard for frequent users of rail+bus or rail+subway, Tripper for users of multiple bus companies and Smartcards that you can load products on for multiple operators of you travel less frequently. We're really not as poorly-served as some would have you believe, but public transport just can't compete with private cars. Many European cities make it pretty expensive/ difficult to drive, but GCC will be pilloried for demonising cars if they put up parking charges or when the LEZ comes in. by TheRealDanSch (Tue 9th Aug 2022 1:55pm)
  • And if you're using bus, the Tripper product might be of use - glasgowtripper.co.uk by TheRealDanSch (Tue 9th Aug 2022 3:57pm)
  • When I said variety I was referring to the routes and modes. The problem with a cap is that someone has to pay for it. Also, I'm assuming your £6 example is by bus, but Hyndland to Kelvinhall Subway is like a 20 minute walk, then Subway to Govan is £3 for a capped day ticket. This is my point about folk wanting door to door travel for low prices. by TheRealDanSch (Tue 9th Aug 2022 3:55pm)
  • You can load your smart tickets onto the same card in Scotland, regardless of the operator. It's not an "integrated ticket" but it does mean they're on the same bit of plastic at least. by TheRealDanSch (Tue 9th Aug 2022 4:14pm)
  • Google maps must think you walk slow, or we've plotted different start and end points - it kinda depends where in Hyndland you're going to or from. Of course there's the potential for it to be wet or cold but that's an occupational hazard of commuting in Scotland, Im afraid. You're not made of sugar 🙂 by TheRealDanSch (Tue 9th Aug 2022 5:14pm)
  • Might not help you specifically but wee tip is to use Hotels.com and redeem Tesco Clubcard vouchers at 3x the value. We stayed at the Moxy in town a few weeks back and it cost us £35 rather than 115ish - cheaper than a taxi home. Beware, though, that you can't use the vouchers for the tax, only the core booking (we inadvertently cashed in too much, but meant we could just add breakfast!) by TheRealDanSch (Wed 17th Aug 2022 4:38pm)

  • What kind of concession are you meaning, and what type of transport? I'm assuming rail... by TheRealDanSch (Thu 25th Aug 2022 1:33pm)
  • Concession seasons don't exist, sadly - need to buy your return daily. A longer-term season may still work out cheaper (and allow you to travel weekends at no extra cost) but the daily return will give you the flexibility for holidays etc. by TheRealDanSch (Thu 25th Aug 2022 1:32pm)
  • Definitely best with your concession card, then! Monthly season would be £99 - so even if you used it every day it would cost more than a concession return IIRC. by TheRealDanSch (Thu 25th Aug 2022 1:42pm)

  • People Make Glasgow... ... friendly and welcoming, mostly. But also a filthy shithole at times. During the council bin strikes the amount of rubbish pulled around bins in the city centre was a disgrace. You'll struggle to convince me that all of those piling coffee cups on the bins weren't on their way to a place of work with bins, where commercial waste collections were unaffected. Folk seem able to carry a container filled with scalding liquid, but as soon a it's empty, it's an unmanageable burden! It's a societal problem, not everyone is the same, but there are enough selfish folk to make it noticeable. Same as when it snows and, rather than clear the pavement outside their house, folk shovel the snow in front of their drive onto the pavement either side. End of rant... 😂 by TheRealDanSch (Wed 21st Sep 2022 10:13am)

  • Could get the train somewhere - needn't even have anything specific planned at the other end, just some colouring books and pencils and some snacks. If budget is a concern, it's about 2 quid for a hurl round the city on the Subway. Takes 25 minutes to go all the way round (and you can stay on a long as it keeps her amused). City link also do cheap fares to various towns and cities. You don't have to go far but my experience is that the kids love that different perspective of being on the road but relatively high up. by TheRealDanSch (Tue 25th Oct 2022 1:01pm)

  • If you have a key, changing locks is typically a simple thing to do, particularly modern Euro profile cylinders. I recently bought a house and changed front and back door to matched cylinders, cost me <£40 and takes 5 minutes to unscrew a single bolt on the face of the door (the bit that the lock and latch protrude from. You'll need to take the old lock out and measure distance from centre to the internal and external face (usually 40/45/50/55mm). They're sold as "45/45" or "50/40" etc. with the dimensions being from inside to centre/centre to outside. No need to remove the door handle, just remove the holding bolt, twist the key 20 degrees and out it pops. NB you can get cheaper cylinders singly, £40 was a premium to get a pair as I needed 6 keys and didn't want to get more cut! by TheRealDanSch (Thu 27th Oct 2022 12:53pm)
  • It's a shallow "cut and cover" system just now, no rock drilling required. Would be very unlikely that anything that shallow could reasonably be built again so any extension would effectively be a separate underground railway. • We provide fire blankets in all our rental properties and have one in our own home but not fire extinguishers. Blankets are so cheap to buy and simple to use, that it seems daft not to have them. However, fire extinguishers are vulnerable to misuse, need regular maintenance and, ideally, adequate training for use. As a landlord, I don't want the expense of the inspection and maintenance or the liability if a tenant is injured misusing equipment i provided. • We're generally pretty frugal but I am diligently following the teachings of my parents and getting all the curtains shut as soon as it starts to get dark (i.e. about 4pm) which upsets the rest of the family! Quite conscious about not overfilling the kettle and do put the excess into a thermos for doing the dishes when my wife makes tea, as she boils water like we're an army! I remember seeing something on telly where a guy took a thermos to work and filed it from the company kettle. We're not there yet, but maybe because I mostly work from home... I don't iron anything anymore either, that helps. by TheRealDanSch (Wed 23rd Nov 2022 11:03pm)

  • We're with Octopus for electric and they're doing a "Savings Session" thing, which i think is a National Grid initiative, to reduce consumption at peak times. Yesterday it was 530-630. In lucky enough to work from home and be able to stick the heating on and prep dinner beforehand, but we went all-out this week and switched off everything except the fridge freezer and the house alarm (because it whinges off the power fire off). Had dinner by candle light and then a game of monopoly with the kids. For that hour we spent 2p on electricity and will probably earn about £2 back, which is buttons, but it's a fun exercise to try willingly and the kids enjoyed it. Does feel a bit like a planned outage though, which is pretty worrying in the grand scheme of things. by TheRealDanSch (Wed 23rd Nov 2022 11:12pm)
  • My wife was putting ours up to 18.5 and it made my face feel like it was melting. I reckon it was out by a couple of degrees anyway, so I found out how to set a compensation factor on it and shifted it down by a couple of degrees. Now she sets it to 18.5 and we're both happy (ish). In all seriousness, though, we have the heating at a minimum of 5deg through the night and it rarely falls below 15. No point in running the heating when everyone's tucked in their duvets. by TheRealDanSch (Wed 23rd Nov 2022 11:26pm)

  • 5°C overnight, 15°C from 6am until 10pm. We work from home and kids go to school and nursery so tend to just boost it to 17.5°C for a few hours around dinner if it's too cold and maybe a wee blast during the working day if it's getting unpleasantly cold but with it being a newish-build, it holds heat well and rarely dips much below 15° overnight. • It's dead easy to plan it, delivering it is the difficult bit. I guess a major issue will be the private companies basically having their income immediately taken away from them if the council starts running everything for free. Unless they're going to be awarded contracts by the local authority, which is what currently happens with SPT-supported services in rural areas and in evenings. And that doesn't exactly work brilliantly either by TheRealDanSch (Sun 18th Dec 2022 12:09pm)

London and many (but by no means all) European cities have achieved this, and its definitely a worthy ambition, but don't underestimate the cost of London's transport subsidy, it's massively expensive to run but deemed a necessary expense to keep the city productive. by TheRealDanSch (Sun 18th Dec 2022 12:55pm)

  • The old machines were knackered and couldn't be replaced and the tickets had metals in the black stripe for the magnetic encoding. Its part of a nationwide plan to get rid of the magnetic stripes. The size of the paper ticket is governed by national specs so it's a UK rail industry abomination, rather than a uniquely ScotRail one! • To me this is a red flag for a bad landlord (I'm told they exist). Make sure your deposit has been protected by a legitimate company in Scotland and check your rental agreement for their landlord registration, then confirm its still current with the local council Landlord should definitely be repairing (i.e. cleaning) to a reasonable standard at their expense or replacing. A new machine is a deductible expense for them - offer to buy a machine and reduce the rent for the next month by the agreed amount of they're not willing to pay for it upfront. by TheRealDanSch (Tue 7th Mar 2023 1:09pm)
  • I was thinking the same thing - frustrating to pay the cost of a few high-heat cycles when the landlord should have handed it over in a usable state. No idea why you're down voted for pointing that out! by TheRealDanSch (Tue 7th Mar 2023 1:16pm)
  • Not sure which side of the discussion your point falls, but I have. I lived in Germany. We bought beer and soft drinks by the crate, and then we took them back to the "Getränkmarkt" to get out deposit back (or, more likely, to put it towards more beer). People always seem to argue that they can't take bottles back, as if returning empty ones is so much more difficult than taking full ones away. I was there when shops gave "Pfand" (deposit) tokens for their specific shop with bottles so that you had to return bottle and token for a refund, but more recently they have automated machines that scan the barcode and give you a voucher for the amount. It effectively puts a value on specific types of rubbish - if you're rich enough to not care about the deposit and enough of an arsehole to litter, hopefully you're funding the poor person who picks it up and cashes it in (much like picking up ginger bottles from building sites as a child in 80s/90s Scotland). I can also recall seeing guys at airports abroad lifting empties from bins to get the deposit back. Sadly, though, this only helps with certain types of litter. There's a Converse shoe box on a motorway slip near me, with no shops in the vicinity - i can't fathom how it got there, other than by accepting that a lot of people are just filthy, selfish swine. by TheRealDanSch (Tue 7th Mar 2023 3:52pm)
  • There needs to be a national campaign highlighting that littering is an English thing, not for us. Then a campaign in Central Scotland saying it's for Teuchters. A Glasgow campaign saying folk in Edinburgh fucking love the littering. Then the Celtic View/Rangers News run stories about how all the Proddies/Fenians are to blame for littering. When it boils down to it, conflict and polarisation seem to be the only things to drive engagement nowadays! I've heard it's just those pricks at r/Edinburgh that are responsible... by TheRealDanSch (Tue 7th Mar 2023 3:57pm)
  • You're assuming they aren't doing anything - I'm happy to do a bit of litter-picking along the local canal or at my kids school but fucked if I'm going to jump out my car at the Cathedral St off-ramp and fill a couple of bin bags. The "doing something" might be highlighting the problem and encouraging a bit of shame in those that recognise themselves in the comments and hopefully have them change their behaviour. It's a bit naive to call Reddit Glasgow an echo chamber - I'm frequently surprised at what gets up and down voted, but to suggest that nobody on here drops litter is a fairly bold assumption. by TheRealDanSch (Tue 7th Mar 2023 4:37pm)
  • It used to be that a day ticket was cheaper than a return, so people bought them off they didn't need them, effectively inventivising what you've described. When smart tickets came in the pricing structure changed so that you would only really buy a day ticket if you needed 3+ trips, and therefore fewer people would discard them, and typically later in the day. by TheRealDanSch (Fri 10th Mar 2023 9:27pm)

I used to work in a wee newsagent and your first job at 6am was to take trays of the bastards and bag them all up. Used to fair get the hunger up. As a teen I would pack up all the rolls then have my tea at about 10am and eat half a dozen with either a 6 pack of Walkers or a family pack of Bernard Matthews turkey ham (whatever the fuck that is!) • Firstly, I think this sounds shite and I'm sorry you're having to deal with it. I'm not and never have been in a band but I've enjoyed seeing various pals and others play in Glasgow, and I'd hate to think that folk were not getting paid after I went to a venue specifically to see them. In terms of outing RocknRollas, even if they pay you now, the fact that you needed to fight for it means it's worth sharing the info with other acts, so don't feel bad about airing their dirty laundry. If they don't end up paying you, and it's the definitely the venue that owes you (not a third party promoter) I'd be inclined to write it off but take some form of spiteful revenge, like going in as a big group, ordering plenty of food and booze then just leaving without paying, perhaps citing personal/mental health issues... Or maybe I'm just a petty bastard. I did once get a Cease and Desist letter from a lawyer for a driving school that fucked me over, as I'd called and left them 400 blank voicemails over the course of one very angry week (I was driving a lot and had hands-free at my disposal)! by TheRealDanSch (Thu 6th Apr 2023 9:40pm)

  • As others have said, if its Edinburgh you'd be better with public transport - I'm assuming that with it being two days and young kids that you'll not be travelling very early in the morning or late at night. Kids do love the train, and the scotrail Express service (via Falkirk High) is fast, frequent and usually will have a toilet on board. Don't but your children's tickets online, you can add "Kids for a Quid" at the booking office and save a good chunk. Railcard is also a good shout. If budget is a priority, Citylink run the 900 from Buchanan Bus Station to Edinburgh City centre (Princes St) or AIR to the airport. Cheaper, and they run through the night, but journey time is longer and less consistent than the train, but the toilets might be a struggle with youngsters. by TheRealDanSch (Thu 15th Jun 2023 12:26am)
  • Same here - I feel better about the kids using the paddling pool when the water goes onto the fruit and veg plants in the evening! • The subway was built using "cut and cover" method in most places, so they basically dug a trench, built a horseshoe of brick over the top and backfilled it. The groundwater leaks in all over the place. To stop it constantly dripping on the trains and track, there are sheets fixed to the internal face that let it trickle down and around to track level, where it's directed into channels and then sumps, from where it can be pumped out. There are generally "dips" between stations (designed to aid acceleration out of and deceleration into stations) so the water will run away from the stations to a lower point and get pumped out from there. by TheRealDanSch (Fri 23rd Jun 2023 8:03pm)

  • Whilst I agree that's annoying, doesn't it beg the question "why not start and end gigs half an hour earlier?" The railways need to accommodate changes to staff shift patterns, track maintenance and scheduled freight services late at night. • Really? Not challenging you on it, I'm genuinely curious as it's something I know nothing about. I'd have thought there would be a reasonable amount of flexibility built into a tour schedule to cater for things like travel delays, changes in time zones, local licensing, some gigs having more support acts than others etc, not to mention acts having time for TV and radio promo, meet & greet etc. I understand that timing for football is quite often dictated by TV or other games happening elsewhere simultaneously but imagined that gigs were far more "standalone". by TheRealDanSch (Sun 25th Jun 2023 10:21am)

  • You're getting downvotes, I assume because the comment is seen as anti-SNP but you're right about the "free" bus - under 22s, over 60s, people with disabilities and impairments and also some with addictions all get travel which is "subsidised" to a point. Operators are reimbursed by government to the tune of something like 56% of the equivalent *adult single fare*. Firstly, this means the operators somehow need to make up the shortfall in revenue through those that do pay. Secondly, it incentivises operators to bump up the adult single, as it's what the reimbursement is tied to (and few people actually buy singles - returns and seasons are more common). by TheRealDanSch (Fri 7th Jul 2023 8:41am)

  • You need to get a Customer Read for the move-in date, not an estimate. The agent should have done this for you. You should not be paying anything off the delay to moving in as not your responsibility. When you move in, it's good practice to take photos of the meter reads. As a landlord, I always do this and share them with the tenant so everyone is clear about their position. If you didn't move in, the agent was wrong to inform the supplier of the change. by TheRealDanSch (Mon 24th Jul 2023 12:02pm)

  • I would be interested to know what hotel you were expecting to stay in, as I'd never imagine that driving to and parking in a city centre hotel car park would be feasible, particularly if you were planning on coming and going multiple times over the weekend. The UCI events are ongoing at the moment so the City is busy, difficult to navigate and hotels are more expensive - would you not have been better going nearer to where your family is and taking the train/bus into town to meet folk from elsewhere, if necessary? This whole story sounds like a nonsense tbh - how much shopping and socialising were you expecting to do with kids in tow? I'm assuming, btw, that you're traveling as a lone parent, given your regular posts on r/bumble. by TheRealDanSch (Sat 12th Aug 2023 11:42pm)
  • All the rail gates in Scotland are Cubic gates - the main issue is the cost to install and run a system like that, and the fact that (unlike London) loads of Scottish stations are ungated, so there's a question of what to charge people or "reserve on their cards" when they first tap. You tap a gate at Queen St and you might be going to High St or Wick. Agree that it would be great to have something like that, but the cost to underwrite it could be crippling (especially with all these bastards trying to skip the fare from Partick 😂) by TheRealDanSch (Wed 16th Aug 2023 8:14pm)

  • And too much fake grass, hard landscaping, impenetrable boundary fences etc. We built a hedgehog house with the kids at the start of the summer holidays and cut a hole in the fence through to some woodland. After eight weeks of being asked if we've got a hedgehog yet, I find myself Googling how I could buy a hedgehog yesterday 😂 FWIW, I don't really like using chemicals in the garden or splattering the slugs with a stamp like my grandad taught me, so I've become quite adept at picking slugs up with a trowel and firing them a considerable distance over my fence! by TheRealDanSch (Mon 21st Aug 2023 11:05pm)
  • Think you're correct with this. For age of construction, the home report will give an estimate but not the EPC. OP - if there are any similar flats for sale, email the estate agents and request the Home Report. It will give you some info about the building and, hopefully, another surveyor's second opinion on energy costs. by TheRealDanSch (Thu 31st Aug 2023 10:49pm)
  • This is exactly my experience too - the free alterations are often unnecessary but stop you returning an unsuitable item. by TheRealDanSch (Mon 25th Sep 2023 8:26am)
  • Put a few bricks into the bottom of the TV box, fill with the remaining cardboard, reseal and leave it by the side of your building for someone to nick it. Remove your address from everything in case those scallywags fly tip it when they find it's not a TV. by TheRealDanSch (Tue 26th Sep 2023 11:55am)
  • A message is sent from the back office to all the machines on the network. When you present your card, the machine recognises the number and updates your balance with the amount you paid for online. If the machine you tap is a gate, it will load your top-up and then deduct your journey cost and open the gate (but it will all seem like a single transaction). If you're nervous about it, present it to a ticket machine and it will top it up instantly and die your new balance. by TheRealDanSch (Sat 30th Sep 2023 11:09am)

  • No, it's only Scotrail singles and returns that are impacted. You're right that it may well make the ZoneCard unattractive, because its price is largely tied to the price of ScotRail peak tickets (as they were last month). by TheRealDanSch (Mon 2nd Oct 2023 11:09pm)
  • Worth bearing in mind that what you're seeing coming into Argyle St is sub-surface rail (i.e. full-size train tracks) and totally unrelated to Subway/Underground. Back in the days before British Rail there were various railway operators (not just train operators) competing and it meant loads of now-refundant tracks were built. There are various different historic routes through/ across/under Glasgow that have been abandoned including the formerly proposed Crossrail project in Glasgow (linking North and South). Might be worth looking then up as I'm sure they'll have info about the various lines. by TheRealDanSch (Tue 3rd Oct 2023 9:07am)

  • Not sure why this is getting downvoted - budgets are stretched at local and national level. No political party is going to commit to something in this climate that isn't going to help win them votes at the next election (and the political system in this country means they aren't motivated to look any further than the next public vote!) by TheRealDanSch (Wed 22nd Nov 2023 9:36am)
