  • It's not all out of pocket as properties are marketed below the valuation, with the goal of creating exactly this situation. It sucks as a buyer and is great when you're selling. The home report which is pitad for by the seller, should give you an idea of the actual value, though in the current market you'll still likely need to go over that. by Walkingwalking123 (Tue 17th Aug 2021 8:47am)
  • This year has been amazing, the best I can remember. Winter was colder and dryer than usual, with some of the most beautiful frosty and snowy days. May had me worried because it's usually one of our best months for sun but wasn't great this year, but since then we seem to have had almost constant warm sun. The one thing our beautiful city usually lacks is great weather so this year we've had it all. by Walkingwalking123 (Mon 13th Sep 2021 7:27am)
  • Walking is brilliant! I do the same from Shawlands. Not much slower by the time you factor in waits, and way more pleasant. This thread is a revelation to me. I have travelled the world solo, thought nothing of hopping onto a train in Japan or a bus across Norway, but negotiating my way between home and work now the trains have been cut to one an hour has just been beyond me. I have lived in Glasgow all my life but read every one of OP's questions and thought, "I'd like to know the answer to that". Sometimes I take the bus home after a night out if I don't feel walking would be wise, and have enough Dutch courage to negotiate the system. At least with contactless payment you don't need a range of coins to provide the money for the exact (secret until you get on and ask) fare. by Walkingwalking123 (Tue 21st Sep 2021 11:30pm)
  • Live further out but somewhere with good transport links? Dumbarton, Clydebank, East Kilbride all have great regular train services. Not sure whether this is feasible for a nurse working shifts but worth checking out possibly. by Walkingwalking123 (Fri 24th Sep 2021 9:42pm)
  • What an awful man. He received nothing but sympathy in the beginning as far as I could see, until it became apparent that not only did he make a terrible error of judgement in keeping driving, he seems to have so little remorse that he's willing to risk future accidents for his own convenience. by Walkingwalking123 (Tue 28th Sep 2021 9:20pm)
  • Even on a Saturday night there's always someone on their own at the GFT. Going to the GFT, getting a wine in a plastic glass and watching a film alone is truly one of the most decadent things a person can do, I feel. Other cinemas are fine too, but if you want to dip your toe in the water of solo cinema going, the GFT is the perfect place. by Walkingwalking123 (Mon 11th Oct 2021 9:39pm)
  • Agreed. The buzz when you first realise you can do anything on your own is incredible. Suddenly you have the freedom to do anything, any time that suits you! When I think about my first solo holiday (Japan, I was terrified) I still have a feeling of relaxation and happiness wash over me, a good 15 years later. by Walkingwalking123 (Mon 11th Oct 2021 9:44pm)
  • You could start somewhere like Wagamama. It's halfway between fast food and restaurant, so sure to have other solo diners. by Walkingwalking123 (Mon 11th Oct 2021 9:49pm)
  • I'm genuinely jealous that you have that experience ahead of you. Please do it! by Walkingwalking123 (Mon 11th Oct 2021 10:13pm)
  • Agreed and one of the first streets lots of visitors see, given the location beside Central Station. Such a different impression could be given. by Walkingwalking123 (Fri 22nd Oct 2021 9:57pm)
  • So it's about the reduction in services. I didn't realise that. They have my full support in that case. Passenger numbers are down because everyone has been working from home during covid, and because the reduced covid timetable is no use so we drive or take a taxi (or bus if we have 3 times as much time to spare and don't mind paying more compared to the train for that privilege). So reduced passenger numbers is a shite excuse to cut services. by Walkingwalking123 (Sun 24th Oct 2021 6:04pm)
  • But it's not any old 18 months, it's the last year and a half where we've been instructed to work from home if at all possible, and for much of it shops, bars, cafes, cinemas, theatres and restaurants have been shut. Using that as the standard to judge requirement for future services is crazy. by Walkingwalking123 (Mon 25th Oct 2021 6:31pm)
  • I'm not jumping up and down or demanding anything. What a strange thing to infer from my posts. I am fortunate to have a car and will use it when I have to. Not everyone is so lucky. And so I stand by my belief that cutting services is a bad idea. In my opinion, people should be encouraged to use public transport and sometimes that might mean more subsidy is needed, or profits to be reduced. by Walkingwalking123 (Mon 25th Oct 2021 7:34pm)
  • I agree with a lot of what you say, but would add that bus lanes are much more respected by other drivers/less likely to be used as car parking, compared to any other cycle lane that is just painted on. The decent cycle lanes are kept properly separate from car lanes. I also find bus drivers really patient and courteous (taxis less so). Only bad bit for me is if you have to overtake a bus at a stop. by Walkingwalking123 (Fri 29th Oct 2021 8:37am)
  • Welcome to Glasgow. Definitely check out the Necropolis, amazing old cemetery just beside the cathedral. It's fascinating and despite being outdoors (obvs) it is no less great in bad weather. by Walkingwalking123 (Sat 30th Oct 2021 9:08am)
  • I already walk any journey under about 3.5 miles unless it's not safe (female so won't risk walking at night), thermostat is way down, all shopping done locally, was very early to the party on reducing plastic use. I only recently got my head round how huge the impact of eating meat is, especially beef, so switching meat for veg and pulses is next. I want to do that for health reasons anyway so it's a no brainer. Oh and buying more second hand. Another easy selfish one. Amazing bargains to be had on eBay, especially clothes. by Walkingwalking123 (Mon 1st Nov 2021 8:55pm)
  • Thank you! And you're right, it benefits our health too. by Walkingwalking123 (Mon 1st Nov 2021 9:22pm)
  • I'm optimistically hoping they will catch up with the missed collections, like they do if your collection day falls on Christmas. I got furniture delivered just before the strike so recycling bin is bursting at the seams with cardboard and green bin full of polystyrene. Now working on filling the purple bin... by Walkingwalking123 (Thu 4th Nov 2021 9:47pm)
  • Yes, frustrating they aren't catching up the missed services. I'm mainly just grateful I didn't miss a purple bin collection. by Walkingwalking123 (Tue 9th Nov 2021 8:28pm)
  • Yep. I only put mine out because all the neighbours did so I thought I had nothing to lose. by Walkingwalking123 (Tue 9th Nov 2021 8:27pm)
  • Frequent train service too (still 4x per hour?), including the ability to go directly to Edinburgh. by Walkingwalking123 (Tue 9th Nov 2021 8:41pm)
  • Anarkali on Victoria Road. Brilliant curry and BYOB. by Walkingwalking123 (Thu 11th Nov 2021 12:55pm)
  • A dog took a sandwich from my son's hand in Rouken Glen Park. I was pretty horrified though to the owner's credit so was she. Saw another dog jump up at a toddler in the same park and knock them into the water. No problem with them being off the lead if they are well trained. by Walkingwalking123 (Sat 20th Nov 2021 8:40pm)
  • It's quite sweet when you see them sitting with their tail wagging just happy to be beside their owner. by Walkingwalking123 (Sat 20th Nov 2021 9:01pm)
  • You'll get parked no bother for free on Pollokshaws Road at the back of the arcade. by Walkingwalking123 (Thu 2nd Dec 2021 7:31pm)
  • I see a lot of this in Victoria Road. The pavement isn't always wide enough and some shop displays take up more than half of the space so sometimes pedestrians have to step into the cycle lane to pass (obviously looking first - you're effectively stepping into the road. I use the cycle lane too so I get the challenge). But Sauchiehall St is the opposite in my experience. Despite the fantastic cycle lanes, there always seem to be cyclists on the pavement, often food deliveries. I guess they find it more convenient to cycle on the side they pick up from. I'd say live and let live but it rips my knitting that pedestrians have to be the ones to stop and jump out of the way every time. Agree with the comment above that there are people doing wrong in all modes of transport and common sense (and courtesy) is the solution. by Walkingwalking123 (Sun 5th Dec 2021 9:01am)

  • Well you still interact when they bring your drinks, chat and smile still happens, just no awkward breaks in the conversation as you're too busy craning your head around trying to catch someone's eye if you don't have a central table. Anyway, I only asked 🤷🏼‍♀️ by Walkingwalking123 (Fri 31st Dec 2021 1:57pm)
  • Brilliant butcher and fantastic steak pies but first thing yesterday morning they only had smaller ones left so I wouldn't get hopes up or make a trip specially. by Walkingwalking123 (Fri 31st Dec 2021 2:14pm)
  • Hope 2022 is better for you (for everyone) 🍻 by Walkingwalking123 (Fri 31st Dec 2021 2:16pm)
  • Try emailing them directly. They were pretty helpful when I emailed them about a pair of walking shoes that fell apart. Or else ask the person who gave you it where they bought it and try the shop? by Walkingwalking123 (Thu 6th Jan 2022 2:31pm)
  • Disappointing from JD. I ended up going back to the store (Cotswold) for a refund as North Face couldn't repair my shoes and didn't have any suitable replacement they could offer. Cotswold looked through their till logs from almost a year earlier and then helped me. You'd have hoped JD could offer a replacement, very different to asking for your/her money back. Hopefully you hsve better luck with North Face! by Walkingwalking123 (Thu 6th Jan 2022 4:14pm)
  • I'm pretty sure I was taught to give pedestrians priority but my memory is hazy; I learned to drive over 25 years ago. That's probably part of the problem, we're not all new drivers and bad habits can set in. I think the new rules are great. As a pedestrian it can be really tricky to gauge whether a car is likely to turn at a junction of a road you're crossing (indicators are only one clue you might want to look for, others are knowing the road layout/markings the car is driving on which can reduce the need drivers feel to signal, trying to see where the driver is looking, why they aren't changing lane, watching for the angle of wheels of cars waiting at t-junctions) and it must be even worse for non drivers and children. There are too many cars on the road now for it to be feasible to teach children to wait until there are no cars coming, like they did in my day. by Walkingwalking123 (Fri 14th Jan 2022 6:36pm)
  • I love the way the estate agent couldn't resist doing close up details of some wiring and a hole in the ceiling, the way they usually do with a fancy bannister or doorknob 😂 by Walkingwalking123 (Mon 24th Jan 2022 9:24pm)
  • Corona isn't fancy but I see the chef from Black Dove is doing a street food collaboration with them which might be worth checking out. As well as all the other recommendations 😂 Kilmurray or Oscars would get my vote. Nice and cosy for this time of year. by Walkingwalking123 (Tue 1st Feb 2022 8:18pm)
  • GlasGo never works for me. Order a cab from the pub, app says 30 mins wait so you get another drink. Driver calls 3 minutes later to say he's outside then fucks off if you ask for 5 mins to throw down your drink. Happened to me twice and I deleted the app. by Walkingwalking123 (Sat 12th Feb 2022 7:53pm)
  • I've noticed similar, not so much the surge pricing but the cheap price, short wait, then app spinning for several minutes then crashing out. I've also been charged £4 a couple of times when the driver changed their mind. by Walkingwalking123 (Sat 12th Feb 2022 7:55pm)
  • I thought I was the only one who noticed those shoogly slabs! I'm the weirdo that walks round the red bumpy slabs at road crossings because you always get soaked walking on them, never see anyone else doing it! by Walkingwalking123 (Wed 23rd Feb 2022 2:29pm)
  • I miss Martha's at all times. by Walkingwalking123 (Wed 2nd Mar 2022 9:57pm)
  • I know that Frosoulla's Greek on the southside is opening for donations of stuff. It's on their Facebook page for details. Just to add though, I have read various suggestions that getting goods to Ukraine might not be easy or quick, especially post Brexit, and that cash donations may be more efficient. I realise that's not an option for everyone so posting it for info only. by Walkingwalking123 (Wed 2nd Mar 2022 10:01pm)
  • They didn't have an appeal open yesterday when I checked. Thanks for sharing the link. by Walkingwalking123 (Wed 2nd Mar 2022 10:05pm)
  • I was a frequent Uber user but in the last few months I don't think I've seen non surge pricing more than once or twice. Or you get a normal price, accept it, the app searches for a driver, fails, you try again and only surge pricing available. It's a shame the trains are fucked. by Walkingwalking123 (Tue 8th Mar 2022 10:01pm)
  • Ugh, GlasGo and Hampden. I hate Uber because of their ridiculous pricing at the moment but I'm prepared to pay some level of premium not to listen to the right wing shite spewed forth by Hampden drivers (and black cabs as well, to a lesser extent). by Walkingwalking123 (Tue 8th Mar 2022 10:05pm)
  • It was heaving with cars on Saturday and same the weekend before. by Walkingwalking123 (Mon 21st Mar 2022 8:27pm)
  • Loads of parking in the streets nearby eg around Shawlands Station which is a 5 minute walk away. Honestly it's so busy with cars the park itself is unpleasant, I'm reluctant to advise yet another person to drive inside the park unless you have to for mobility reasons. There is also a free shuttle bus. Lots of info on the Burrell collection website. https://burrellcollection.com/visit/plan-your-visit/ by Walkingwalking123 (Mon 21st Mar 2022 9:01pm)
  • Variable as everyone has said and you'd be fine to do what you feel comfortable with, mostly. But I've noticed a bit upturn in people wearing masks outdoors in the last couple of weeks. I wonder if the people wearing them have covid? by Walkingwalking123 (Tue 29th Mar 2022 9:07pm)
  • Oh nooooo 😭 by Walkingwalking123 (Thu 31st Mar 2022 7:45am)
  • I don't know if it counts as a hidden gem but I'm eagerly waiting for Frosoullas to open again. Fantastic Greek food and the warmest, most genuine welcome so you feel more like a visitor to their home than a customer. by Walkingwalking123 (Thu 7th Apr 2022 5:49pm)
  • My head is always getting turned by all the new places but The Bungo still takes me by surprise how great it is, every time I go. And they are great at catering for allergies and food intolerances. by Walkingwalking123 (Thu 7th Apr 2022 5:46pm)
  • Viva Brazil is fun. by Walkingwalking123 (Thu 21st Apr 2022 8:38am)

  • I love walking to, and around, residential areas in the city. I'm in Shawlands and a walk round the streets of Crosshill or Hampden has such a different vibe despite being only 15 mins or so from my house. You could use a Next bike to go a little further from wherever your local neighbourhood is. I think the first 30 mins is free but not 100% certain. Take a picnic to one of the parks, a few cans of cocktails are unlikely to be noticed or cause any bother. Bring blankets and stay cosy if it's not warm. Most parks have something worth an explore eg flagpole/viewpoint at Queens Park, Fossil Grove at Victoria Park, Highland cows and calves plus the Burrell Collection at Pollok Park. Follow the mural trail around the city centre. Explore Glasgow uni - stunning buildings. Visit the Panopticonon. It's a hidden gem and free to get into. Make use of being in a city that makes art and culture free and visit the art galleries (Kelvingrove, modern art) and museums (Burrell, People's Palace, Hunterian) that in any other city would cost ££ to get into. If you're able to drive, the Museum of Industrial Life in Coatbridge is truly brilliant. The miners cottages decked out in various era decors are wonderful ❤️ Take a train to Ayr or Troon, walk on the front and eat chips for dinner. by Walkingwalking123 (Fri 22nd Apr 2022 6:33pm)
  • Largs/Millport is my favourite summer day trip. Bring bikes or hire them in Millport! And playing the 2p machines in the arcade in Largs is great fun on a rainy day. by Walkingwalking123 (Sat 23rd Apr 2022 7:56am)
  • Ah, it was free when I went 3 years ago. I hope they make a bit of money to be able to reinvest, the woman who runs it is so passionate about the place. by Walkingwalking123 (Sat 23rd Apr 2022 11:17am)
  • Barrshaw Park is pretty brilliant if you have children. Fantastic play areas, a wee train, a wee road layout for cycling, a dirt track also for cycling and a pond. by Walkingwalking123 (Sat 30th Apr 2022 4:08pm)
  • Oof. Very loyal lifelong SNP voter here a bit saddened to see I'm not the only one abandoning ship. They still got my vote but after Green and Volt (I've voted already by post). by Walkingwalking123 (Mon 2nd May 2022 8:39pm)
  • I agree. Looking at the met Office for next week most days could go either way but tomorrow looks reliably shite. OP if you have a car I'd book to use the Carrick Spa at Cameron House. Outdoor ininity pool, saunas with glass walls so you can see the views and wildlife and the weather doesn't matter. If no car I'd get a train to Balloch and get drunk in one of the local bars, wander up Balloch Park to see the loch if the rain goes off, then chips and more drinks. Edit after re-reading your original post. The ferry rides are enjoyable regardless of weather but definitely better if dry and sunny. by Walkingwalking123 (Sun 8th May 2022 7:31pm)
  • I asked about this yesterday and they said it's government policy to discourage car use, and less than 10% of visitors to the arcade travelled by car. I agree in principle but the reality is people use cars and an inability to park will affect businesses (possibly offset by having more people living nearby, no idea) and the ability of some people to use the shops as well as residents of nearby streets where parking is already at a premium. by Walkingwalking123 (Wed 11th May 2022 5:44pm)
  • I actually like it overall but this concerns me. The picture framer and the amazing wee hardware store - will they be able to afford the rents? I asked yesterday if any provision would be made for those and the tactfully supplied answer was no. If we lose the hardware shop my Amazon purchases will skyrocket which would be such a shame. There's nowhere else I can get lolly sticks for crafts, a can opener for my weak hands, a tin of varnish and tiny pack of picture hooks without getting in the car or buying online in crazy bulk numbers. Edited to correct typo. by Walkingwalking123 (Wed 11th May 2022 5:47pm)
  • This place is amazing. Totally worth checking out by Walkingwalking123 (Sun 22nd May 2022 8:04pm)
  • I love this. Little cans of cocktails, with olives and salami to snack on. You could get a great selection from Aldi for under £20. Bring a blanket to sit on and another to wrap round you. by Walkingwalking123 (Sun 22nd May 2022 8:03pm)
  • But quite a bit less comfortably than a couple living together with a kid, each adult on 25k. Income tax and council tax burden is higher on the single large earner, even leaving aside the less easily measured things like no shared costs for car, utilities etc. I'm not commenting on whether this is fair, just the reality. by Walkingwalking123 (Mon 23rd May 2022 9:19pm)
  • The 50k income person is paying 40% income tax on the last ~7000 of their salary though. The two 25k people are each paying 20%. The single person gets a 25% discount on council tax so pays more proportionately than any adult living with another paying adult. They have one annual leave entitlement so likely to have to pay for additional childcare when a couple can take turns. The house is getting heated, dishes, cooking and laundry done anyway so an extra adult in the house doesn't make a huge difference to gas and electricity cost, and it's more expensive to buy food in small packages that can be used up before going off so again proportionately more expensive, though if you know how and can afford a big freezer to fit bread etc you can offset that. Anyway this is probably more getting into territory of everyone struggling these days. I am tending to agree with those who say middle class is about way more than how much you make. Where you live, how you speak, your hobbies, the food you eat. by Walkingwalking123 (Mon 23rd May 2022 9:56pm)
  • Drive up the Clyde right through Helensburgh and keep going. Right round the Rosneath peninsula, you'll see enormous houses. Makes anything you'd see in Pollokshields look tiny and cheap. Head back down via Loch Lomond but leave the A82 at Luss and follow the old road. There's a tiny place called Aldochlay on the way out of Luss with the most beautiful view of the Loch. Also up Loch Lomond, cut off one of the side roads marked Glen Fruin or Glen Douglas. Single track and will take you out near Helensburgh. Last but absolutely not least the Rest and be Thankful. The drive to Dunoon is stunning, especially at this time of the year. by Walkingwalking123 (Mon 23rd May 2022 10:05pm)

  • Definitely the free museums and art galleries. I've travelled the world and every time you visit places like these the majority of visitors appear to be tourists. In Glasgow they are full of the local citizens. It's such a noble and far sighted thing to do, making art and culture available for everyone. Also the way Glasgow has gone from a grimy industrial city with a rough reputation to a place that's so bursting with culture, food, music and shopping (I'm not listing parks as the parks have always been great) that it's a proper tourist destination. Even if still just a little off the beaten (Edinburgh) track. by Walkingwalking123 (Sun 29th May 2022 8:35pm)
  • If I see someone wearing a mask I just assume they are either vulnerable or more concerned about catching covid than I am for reasons that are entirely their own business. Mask wearers are in a minority but there are enough of them that it's not weird and nobody will look twice at you, even if you wear one outdoors. I've literally never heard covid referred to as a Chinese virus beyond the first few weeks of the pandemic or out of Donald Trump's mouth so don't worry about that. You'll be all good. Have a great trip. by Walkingwalking123 (Fri 24th Jun 2022 1:11pm)
  • Or trains are cheaper than buses but so few and far between as to be pointless. by Walkingwalking123 (Fri 24th Jun 2022 1:18pm)
  • > Better and cheaper public transport is required so people aren’t tempted to drive in. Agreed and this would also ease the pressure on the motorway which is a nightmare at all but the quietest times. by Walkingwalking123 (Fri 24th Jun 2022 1:21pm)
  • LOADS of parking in Shawlands around Shawlands Station. 25 mins walk from Hampden and easy for the motorway after. by Walkingwalking123 (Fri 24th Jun 2022 10:44pm)
  • I came to say the same as a pedestrian. The only vehicle I feel I can trust not to suddenly turn into a junction I'm crossing without indicating. Everything I hate about buses, and there is a lot, is to do with the service that is provided rather than the drivers. by Walkingwalking123 (Sun 26th Jun 2022 8:53am)
  • It might be worth checking if Merry-go-round in Nithsdale Road still do the Saturday morning dads group. Their website suggests it's still a thing. I know a couple of guys (husbands of my mum friends) who went back when our children were babies and think they found it pretty good for meeting other dads. by Walkingwalking123 (Sun 26th Jun 2022 9:05am)

  • The Loading Bay is pretty cool if they are into skateboard, scooter or BMX. They can hire whatever equipment they need and the cafe is good. https://www.theloadingbayglasgow.com/ Go karting is a bit expensive but fun. Xscape or Excite or whatever it's now called is fab. You can do sledging sessions as well as ski or snowboarding. by Walkingwalking123 (Mon 27th Jun 2022 8:51pm)

And seconding or thirding or whatever the Chaakoo recommendations. I adore curry and this place really stands out. by Walkingwalking123 (Tue 28th Jun 2022 8:48pm)

With all respect, the Hard Rock is fine but there are loads of non chain places that are way better. Paesano for pizza would be my top recommendation. Ridiculously cheap and there's a good reason it was voted best pizza in the UK a few years back. by Walkingwalking123 (Tue 5th Jul 2022 10:15pm)

  • I'm sorry to hear you are struggling. You've had loads of great advice, I'll just chip in with my experience as you asked for that too. I went to my GP for help towards the end of lockdown as I just couldn't take any more misery. I hadn't felt happiness in any shape or form for about 5 months, not even for a moment. Building up to making the call was far harder than the call itself. I spoke to a GP who I hadn't met before and he was so sympathetic and understanding, he offered counselling or medication and followed up proactively when he said he would. Please don't be scared to make an appointment. And please keep the appointment even if you feel marginally better on the day. by Walkingwalking123 (Fri 8th Jul 2022 9:19am)
  • Belfast is RIDICULOUSLY friendly. Absolutely brilliant city. I think it's like Glasgow in that it doesn't have that well known appeal so doesn't appear on people's 'to visit' list and then blows them away when they do. by Walkingwalking123 (Sat 9th Jul 2022 8:58pm)
  • So true. I think we mostly just like each other and are also not on the map enough (yet!) to take visitors for granted so make newcomers welcome. I've had some amazing chats with immigrant Uber drivers recently about how much they love it here and it's lovely to be reminded how lucky we are to love here. Anyway, welcome! by Walkingwalking123 (Sat 9th Jul 2022 9:00pm)

  • I've said before that I find bus drivers really safe and courteous. Same goes for HGV drivers. I'm not sure why the same isn't true for taxi drivers but I definitely agree with you. Not so much Ubers for some reason? by Walkingwalking123 (Mon 18th Jul 2022 11:25am)
  • I agree with what you said there about the difference to journey times, based on my brief spell commuting to the city centre by bike. But aren't bike boxes also intended to prevent cyclists having to sit behind a vehicle spewing out exhaust fumes? by Walkingwalking123 (Mon 18th Jul 2022 11:29am)
  • I love this idea. by Walkingwalking123 (Mon 18th Jul 2022 1:59pm)
  • One thing you can do, and I know we shouldn't have to but dealing with reality, is pick litter up yourself. I see a noticeable difference in my street since lockdown and people picking litter became more common. I do ityself sometimes but my street is way cleaner than just my contribution. Even just picking up bits on bin day and putting them in the nearest wheely bin makes a difference. I cleared a bit of wasteground under a railway bridge over a year ago and even after all this time it still looks better. Again, it would be good if we didn't have to, but 🤷🏼‍♀️ by Walkingwalking123 (Mon 18th Jul 2022 2:12pm)
  • Thanks, what forecast are you using for that? Met office suggests cloudy. Though BBC is more optimistic. Traffic not a problem as I'm happy to get there early. by Walkingwalking123 (Mon 18th Jul 2022 2:15pm)

  • If they have a bike or scooter, Robertson Park in Renfrew and Barshaw Park near Paisley both have fantastic play parks and also little roads that are fun for driving or scooting round. My wee one also likes taking his remote control car round them. Rouken Glen is a great park but there are often a few bouncy castles and a roundabout between the car park and the play area so be prepared to either spend on those or gear up for a screaming child as you drag them past. There's a bouncy castle in Barshaw Park too but £2 a go and the guy isn't strict about how long kids stay on if it's not busy so you won't be fleeced for multiple shots. by Walkingwalking123 (Thu 21st Jul 2022 12:22pm)

  • Carly at Complete in Tantallon Road is fantastic and I always come out feeling like a million dollars. I was never a girly girl in my younger years so am not up to speed and honestly going to a beauty salon makes me feel like a fish out of water in the same way going to a garage with my car does. But Carly answers all my stupid questions, talks me up, makes recommendations. by Walkingwalking123 (Mon 1st Aug 2022 8:17pm)

  • As a pedestrian who gets frustrated by having to step aside and wait for cyclists to pass on the pavement as they pedal towards me all helmeted up for their own safety while staring at their phones, getting bells dinged for me to get out of their way or splashed as they zoom through a puddle on the pavement rather than slow down, shouted at because my child is wandering on the pavement in a way that causes them to have to brake unexpectedly, I can see why some people can get a bee in their bonnet. Not saying you do any of those. I've seen runners be cunts too. It would be good if we all (I'm going to include myself in this at times) see each other as people rather than cyclists or runners and remember there's room for us all. Don't take it personally. by Walkingwalking123 (Tue 2nd Aug 2022 10:20pm)

  • I feel like the biggest difference was clarity of communication and ability to admit that nobody knew the answers but they were trying their best. I genuinely think the tories might have seen an opportunity to wipe out the benefit claimants and pensioners, by letting covid rip through the population and take out the weakest. Resulting in a financially better off society overall. I don't think the SNP wanted that, nor would other parties if they had been in power. by Walkingwalking123 (Tue 9th Aug 2022 12:10am)

  • But factor in the time waiting for a bus (I try to get a 57 at Shawlands) and then the journey time and you might be as well waiting for the next train. Plus the bus is more expensive. It's a real shame and it has definitely resulted in me using my car more. by Walkingwalking123 (Wed 10th Aug 2022 11:23am)
  • They cut services because passenger numbers didn't recover after covid. No consideration for the fact that passenger numbers were still lower because one train an hour isn't any use to a lot of people. by Walkingwalking123 (Wed 10th Aug 2022 11:22am)
  • Not sure about now but a return used to be cheaper than one single on this route. No idea why. The ticket machines don't tell you about the cheaper ticket option so you'd only know if you buy a ticket at the office in Central where the staff know about it. by Walkingwalking123 (Wed 10th Aug 2022 2:11pm)
  • The food here is fantastic, good shout. by Walkingwalking123 (Wed 10th Aug 2022 11:15pm)
  • I totally get that. Some things shouldn't necessarily be profitable. Providing transport and health services are two examples that spring to mind. We're in a climate emergency and people need to be temped into using trains and other public transport. Making it difficult or less convenient is a terrible idea. by Walkingwalking123 (Wed 10th Aug 2022 11:20pm)
  • If that's true it seems like a no brainer. Fingers crossed because it would save me a fortune in taxis and would make it much easier for me to get rid of my car. by Walkingwalking123 (Thu 11th Aug 2022 9:17am)
  • I get that working from home has had an influence but surely outside of the office based rush hour it can't have been the reason that passenger numbers have dropped enough to justify cutting services to a third of what they were previously the rest of the time? by Walkingwalking123 (Thu 11th Aug 2022 9:21am)
  • I feel like this sub is full of international students panicking about finding accommodation at the moment. I really feel for them. • If you can drive a wee bit out, Robertson Park in Renfrew and!Barshaw Park near Paisley are both excellent. Levengrove Park in Dumbarton is pretty good if you're up for more of a day trip, as is Calderglen in EK. by Walkingwalking123 (Sat 13th Aug 2022 4:11pm)
  • You're right, ticketing and frequency. Lower prices would be good too. It shouldn't be cheaper to drive than to take the bus. Something else that would make a big difference would be a really good direct link between Glasgow Central and Queen Street. An underground rail shuttle or series of travelators like you get in airports. Train connections that involve switching stations are an utter pain in the arse and add so much time (exacerbated by lack of frequency) that driving to the final destination is often the only feasible way. by Walkingwalking123 (Thu 18th Aug 2022 9:30am)
  • Of course you'll be welcome! We love when people choose our country, for the most part. The southside has a big Indian and Pakistani community so even if you choose not to live in this bit, it's worth a visit for food shopping. I second the advice about watching some Still Game or similar before coming here, with subtitles. Actually the Scottish accent is very clear when you get used to it - we pronounce some letters more like they are written (eg we say 'arr' for 'R' where English people would say 'ahh) but because it's not heard so widely out in the world people aren't tuned in to it. December is the darkest month so don't be alarmed by the short days. By the end of January you'll see a bit of a difference and in June it's daylight until really late, like 10pm, which totally compensates. You might be used to rain but it's windy here too, especially in winter. You'll often find a waterproof coat with a decent hood more useful than an umbrella. by Walkingwalking123 (Fri 26th Aug 2022 9:24am)

  • Me too. I've killed about 30 in my home office this morning alone while I'm working. The kitchen and living room is worse. I've used one of those fly bombs (useless) and a cider vinegar trap (traps loads but there are still many others flying round), Raid spray and chasing the bastards with the hoover tools. I'm at my wits end. I'm guessing it's related to having a bin of food waste that hasn't been emptied since the start of last month. by Walkingwalking123 (Fri 9th Sep 2022 10:05am)

  • Totally agree and I've no idea why you're being downvoted. As a part time single mum there's nothing more frustrating than having to take a rainy day in December off when I don't need it for childcare and then having to pay someone else to look after my son during the summer. Literally every day counts. by Walkingwalking123 (Mon 12th Sep 2022 8:58pm)
  • Of course I would but he's not with me every Christmas. And my reply wasn't just thinking of Christmas day, which I get is a special day for most. But especially when Christmas and boxing day fall on a Saturday and Sunday, I've no desire to be off work on the following Monday or Tuesday if my son is at his dad's. I'd much rather save those days for when he is with me. I get far fewer holidays than he does and have to find childcare for a lot of them as it is. by Walkingwalking123 (Tue 13th Sep 2022 9:02pm)
  • If you're staying in Balloch as you mentioned upthread as a possibility, you could hike this trail to Helensburgh and have food and/or drinks there. There are plenty of places to go in both Helensburgh and Balloch. Then 10 mins on train from Helensburgh to Dalreoch and 10 mins to head back to Balloch (they are on the same line but the line splits at Dalreoch). by Walkingwalking123 (Thu 15th Sep 2022 3:22pm)

  • Poor wage or not the bus is expensive. Anyone with a car is generally cheaper driving. Not to mention faster, more reliable, more comfortable. If trains are available on the route they are often cheaper too. by Walkingwalking123 (Mon 26th Sep 2022 12:47pm)
  • I was last there a couple of months ago. Get to the main gate, turn left and follow the fence along round the corner and you'll come to a bent open bit. To get to the higher levels you need to make your way to the opposite side of the building, inside the fence. Top tip, there will often be someone else around and you can shout to ask how they got to the bit they are at. by Walkingwalking123 (Wed 5th Oct 2022 9:48pm)

  • Funnily enough I didn't hate it all at the time. But looking back I am certain that the impact has been enormous. I probably appear the same to my friends but inside I'm nervous and angry. Not always but regularly enough. I think it has probably changed a lot of us and I hope this thread and the responses give you some comfort, OP. My now 8 year old has undoubtedly been affected too and I hate that even more. Home schooling by parents working full time damaged a lot of families. We had no choice but that's the reality. by Walkingwalking123 (Sat 15th Oct 2022 9:38pm)
  • We did pull together as a society I think, though it's easy to forget that having learned about the parties and fun that people at the top of the government continued to have. After the beginning, when we quickly began to understand that people had very different levels of risk of dying, a lot of people were staying home and distancing to prevent other people, strangers, from getting sick and dying, rather than themselves. Neighbours looked out for each other. If the whole thing had ended after a few months instead of dragging on for 2 years, we might even have come out of it in a better place than we started. I agree with you that it feels no lessons have been learned. If it happened again we'd be worse off because I'm not sure many people would abide by a lockdown again. by Walkingwalking123 (Sun 16th Oct 2022 9:35am)
  • I agree that we seemed to have relentless tighter rules in Glasgow. I found that difficult knowing if I lived a few miles down the road things would be different. • Your best bet would probably be a local farmers market, because home made is far superior to anything you can buy in normal shops. Not sure where you are but I've seen it in the No9 delicatessen on Minard Road. I can happily share a recipe and you can make a huge batch in like an hour for a couple of pounds. Especially now that Lidl are doing cheap tins of condensed milk. by Walkingwalking123 (Wed 2nd Nov 2022 12:42pm)

  • Do you have a freezer? If you only have the tiny ice box in your fridge you can freeze portions in zip lock bags and fit quite a bit more in the freezer compared to using tupperwares. by Walkingwalking123 (Fri 18th Nov 2022 1:19pm)

  • You're getting downvoted but that's the reality. I wholeheartedly support what Locavore do, and will try to either donate or at least pop in and buy something. But their prices are undoubtedly high and if I can choose carrots and a loaf from Locavore, or carrots and a loaf from Lidl and 2 hours of central heating for the same money, sadly I will go to Lidl. I'm not proud of that and the cheap loaf is more processed and carrots probably full of pesticides but it's the truth. by Walkingwalking123 (Fri 25th Nov 2022 9:02pm)
  • It's not always starvation (well it wasn't, in the current climate I don't want to assume that any more), but cheap, easy bulky foods are rarely healthy. I know, I know, I can do amazing things with lentils, dried chickpeas and butter beans will cook in my instant pot and be delicious and nutritious, at least when I mix them with some of the lovely spices I have in my well stocked cupboard. I'm lucky to have that and I work 40 hours a week in just one well paid job. But if someone is exhausted and has a basic kitchen and literally can't afford to make the choice to buy the pack of stir fry veg and a couple of bananas, then a box of cheap sugary cereal, some basics super noodles and a 30p pack of biscuits to feel like a treat is a much more realistic option. I'm pretty sure I could gain weight on £1 a day if I set my mind to it. 3 packets of cheap Lidl biscuits and I'm well over my 1500 cals a day. . by Walkingwalking123 (Fri 25th Nov 2022 9:16pm)
  • They are but to cook them in a palatable manner isn't free. Also can you imagine the misery? I sometimes enjoy a bowl of porridge made in the microwave with water for my dinner but I would hate to have to eat that every night just to fill my stomach, wouldn't you? Eggs are the exception (eggception) to this. I remember reading that if poor people are able to eat eggs, it makes a measurable difference to their health and growth. I hate them but I think most people can enjoy just a plain boiled egg, or one scrambled in the microwave. by Walkingwalking123 (Fri 25th Nov 2022 9:22pm)
  • GFT for a film. A much better experience than any big chain cinema. Wrap up and go for a walk. Explore the neighbourhoods or head out of the city and do hillwalking. Join a book group, or start a new one. There seems to be a lot of enthusiasm on local Facebook groups for this type of thing, and I love the idea myself. Go to the library. More books and free. Train to Largs, a go at the amusement arcades, fish and chips and a Nardini's ice cream. It's fun in the rain. If you drive and can afford the fuel, head out in the car. Drive round Rosneath peninsula, down to Ayr for a walk on the beach, New Lanark. Make the most of the free galleries and museums. Eat. Cook or go out. I've seen some cooking classes on itison etc that look good. Splash out on a spa day at Cameron House. Outdoor infinity pool, saunas overlooking Loch Lomond. Check out the coffee and cake scene in the Southside. Go round the charity shops. Lots of posts here if you search on where to find good ones. by Walkingwalking123 (Fri 25th Nov 2022 9:44pm)

  • Yes. Lean forward slightly, more as if you were jogging than walking. Slips usually send you flying backwards so adjusting your centre of gravity really helps. I also walk in bus lanes where possible, as they are often gritted when pavements aren't. Only if it's quiet and facing the oncoming traffic obviously. by Walkingwalking123 (Tue 6th Dec 2022 1:23pm)
  • It won't be cold in an office so you don't need to dress warm for indoors. It depends on the workplace but trousers and a shirt without a tie are acceptable in the majority of offices I've worked in. Most offices do dress down Fridays where jeans are fine, just ask someone so you know for sure. You'd do well to get a good waterproof jacket with a hood though. It can be very windy so umbrellas are of limited use. I assume since you say Feb/Mar it will be early March so the weather will indeed be cold. Late March is utterly unpredictable. This March I had days sitting in the garden in shorts and vest and got sunburned (though I'm a Scot so used to cooler temperatures). Other Marches I have built snowmen. by Walkingwalking123 (Thu 8th Dec 2022 7:43pm)

I've deleted the app. That will teach them. by Walkingwalking123 (Thu 8th Dec 2022 7:50pm)

  • If it's half the building it might be the external pipes. I'm in the same situation today, no running water hot or cold but Scottish Water confirmed there are no supply problems so have to just wait for it to resolve itself. I did spend some time with a fan heater on an extension lead pointing at the pipe I think is the external water one but to no avail. Looking at the forecast I'm hoping the 2 degrees predicted for Friday will be sufficient to thaw the pipes. It's grim but you're not alone. Looking at Facebook there are quite a few others in the same boat too. by Walkingwalking123 (Tue 13th Dec 2022 7:34pm)

  • It can be both. I had a new build flat that I lived in for 7 years no problems. I didn't do anything special, dried laundry on radiators etc but no mould. Had to relocate and couldn't sell it so rented it out for a few years to a young couple. When they moved out there was mould in all the windows and all over the bathroom. The rest of the block was fine. I've no idea what they did(though extractor fans were turned off and window vents closed when I got the keys back) but after a massive clean up operation the mould was gone and didn't come back. by Walkingwalking123 (Wed 14th Dec 2022 8:44am)

There's also Newlands Bakers which although not fancy artisan bread, is a very traditional Scottish style bakery like we used to have in every town until Greggs swallowed up all the business then turned into a fast food shop, leaving most towns with no baker. by Walkingwalking123 (Wed 21st Dec 2022 8:01am)
  • The responsibility is on the homeowner(s) up to the external stopcock. The stopcock itself, regardless of whether it sits just inside or just outside the boundary, and also anything beyond it on the street is Scottish Water's responsibility. I know this as they sent me a helpful pdf when I went a week without water during the recent freeze. They refused to even consider looking at it till a plumber confirmed no water was going through the external stopcock. by Walkingwalking123 (Wed 21st Dec 2022 10:21pm)

  • Also not a cyclist, in my case any more. The key things that put me off, in order, were getting stuck in queues of traffic breathing exhaust fumes at close range (I'm not confident to pass on either side of a queue to get to advance stop boxes which cars often sit in anyway), feeling unsafe/aware of holding up traffic, having to carry and use a heavy bike lock every time I hopped off my bike, weather, having to dress appropriately. Lots of those are fixable by having decent segregated cycle lanes. by Walkingwalking123 (Thu 29th Dec 2022 6:02pm)

  • I'm waiting now for a possible fine to drop through my door after getting stuck in a bus lane (it was that or reverse into traffic) and that's exactly what I'll be doing if one arrives. • I could not agree more. It should be like national service. On the other hand it's over 25 years since I worked in a proper customer service role, as in a "menial" one where respect isn't automatically conferred, and I *still* remember a huge number of the regular customers who were unfailingly lovely and made a wee local shop feel like a lynchpin of the community. I can recall 2 separate customers who we were the first people they spoke out loud to tell about the death of a parent. Like they came in for milk or whatever on their way home from the hospital. What an honour to be part of something like that. Most people are fantastic and we shouldn't lose sight of that. by Walkingwalking123 (Sat 28th Jan 2023 9:43pm)

  • As a 95% pedestrian 5% driver I look at car indicators to gauge whether I can cross at junctions. I know in theory we should perhaps wait for the green man at least at crossings (where one exists), but the reality of our shitty weather and long wait times at crossings mean people will make a judgement call, and where there is no pedestrian crossing as is the case on most roads, that's their only option. I'd like to see drivers educated to indicate their intentions for other road users. Nobody wants to kill someone. by Walkingwalking123 (Thu 9th Feb 2023 5:12pm)
  • Or indicating so people know not to cross. by Walkingwalking123 (Thu 9th Feb 2023 5:14pm)
  • That said, I've yet to see a police car give way when turning left, from the position the photo above was taken from. We could really use a massive campaign of painting lines on the ground at junctions to indicate a crossing point, like you see abroad. The rare times I drive I would appreciate the reminder as well. I've forgotten to give way a couple of times since the rules changed when the pedestrian was still on the pavement and been annoyed at myself after. As I said elsewhere, none of us wants to kill someone. by Walkingwalking123 (Thu 9th Feb 2023 6:43pm)
  • We have to make judgement calls yes. The majority of junctions don't have pedestrian crossings. So we have to look at the traffic and assess whether it's safe to cross. I'm being honest and saying I do also cross at roads where there is a green man, if it's raining and cold and no sign of the green man but it appears safe to cross. It's not illegal in this country to do so. There are junctions where if people didn't do this, the pavements would be blocked with queues of people. Shawlands Cross is a good example, especially around the start and end of school hours. by Walkingwalking123 (Fri 10th Feb 2023 12:15pm)
  • I agree, but in my experience bus drivers are almost always really safe/pedestrian aware. You can rely on their indicators, they avoid splashing pedestrians with puddles if they can and when I cycled I'd always much rather have had a bus behind me than a car or taxi. It fascinates me, the difference between two groups of people who drive all day for a living. by Walkingwalking123 (Fri 10th Feb 2023 1:15pm)
  • I get why you asked. At this time of year I feel like I get weather warnings every other day on my Met Office app, but didn't see anything for yesterday. It sounded much winder overnight than I experienced last couple of times when we did have yellow alerts. Bins blown everywhere this morning and it's glass bin day here so quite a bit of mess in the street. by Walkingwalking123 (Mon 20th Feb 2023 11:46am)

  • I litter pick a lot and on my street woukd say the opposite - bottles and cans accounts for at least half. The rest is a mix of stuff that has clearly blown out of bins unless people are snacking on dishwasher tablets and frozen fish fingers as they walk, fag doubts, crisp/sweet wrappers and stuff like masks and tissues. by Walkingwalking123 (Sun 5th Mar 2023 7:54pm)

  • Nope. It's too expensive and slow. If I'm going in to town I prefer to walk or take the train. The train is £1.80 return. If I'm going anywhere except town, I drive. Buses and trains are too infrequent for any journey that involves a connection to be viable. I realise I am privileged to be able to say that and lots of people have no choice but to suck up long travel times to go a few miles. by Walkingwalking123 (Thu 13th Apr 2023 6:45am)
  • > I know picking the litter yourself is just putting a band aid on a bullet wound I don't believe this is the case. I know it would be lovely if people didn't drop litter and the council swept the streets every day but that's not the reality. I've been doing litter picking since lockdown too and the difference in my street is noticeable. I know I'm not the only one doing it because I have seen at least two others and the street is significantly cleaner. I used to pick 2-3 crisp bags out of my front garden every day and now it's a rarity. Good on you for trying to get people together to fix the problem. I'm not up for a reddit meet of any kind but I'll definitely keep doing my own wee clean ups. by Walkingwalking123 (Fri 5th May 2023 7:38pm)
  • Does this actually happen? I walk on the roads sometimes but only because of cars, bins and general blockages on the pavement. Walking on the road is horrible and I've never seen anyone do it for fun. by Walkingwalking123 (Thu 11th May 2023 8:46pm)

  • I would, yes. I can *taste* the exhaust fumes when I walk my child to school in the morning. I don't really use my local park (Pollok Park) because there isn't an entrance where cars aren't prioritised - at best there's a narrow 2 person wide pavement so I'm walking in single file to pass people coming the opposite direction and worrying about my kid on his bike, or worse there's no pedestrian provision and you just have to jump onto the grass verge when cars come, which is frequently. You stand in the pissing rain at pedestrian crossings trying to guage whether it's safe to take the cars' indicators or lack of at face value, or just be safe and wait another minute or two getting soaked for the green man that was clearly designed with cars in mind and leaves pedestrians waiting. You cross the road outside the school between cars with engines running parked on the zig zags because people refuse to walk a couple of streets. You can't cross the road safely in loads of other places because you can't see for vehicles parked on double yellow lines at junctions or up on the raised pavement that was meant to deter illegal parking. God forbid you try going out with a pram or wheelchair because the pavements and dropped junctions are randomly closed by individual vehicles. I'm actually a car owner myself so I'm not unaware of the challenges of driving in the city but we should be doing NOTHING that makes the car the most convenient option. by Walkingwalking123 (Sun 28th May 2023 10:32pm)

  • I've had these despite telling them on their website I don't watch or stream live TV. I've also had a visit and refused to let them in because it was wet outside and they refused to take their shoes off or wear show covers. No way I'm mopping floors after these cunts. Until they show up with a warrant they can gtf. I find it incredible that with no evidence whatsoever (I genuinely do not need a license - I have a TV that my kid uses for gaming and YouTube and that's it) of any wrongdoing, it's deemed acceptable to want to search my house just to check I'm not a secret criminal. by Walkingwalking123 (Sun 6th Aug 2023 11:49am)
  • The ones at The Granary in Shawlands take so long to turn that the green man is away before the queue to get off the pavement onto the road has even cleared, when it's close to school starting or finishing time. by Walkingwalking123 (Mon 7th Aug 2023 9:10pm)

  • I'm pretty sure pic 2 will be the van that just about flattened me as it reversed onto the pavement one morning not long ago. I saw it reversing and stopped walking, thinking the guy was doing a 3 point turn at the junction. Then realised with horror he had got onto the pavement and was coming at me and couldn't see me as no back window. Horrible second or two that felt like an hour as I tried to work out which side to jump to so he'd have a chance at noticing me in his mirror. Life flashed before my eyes. I gave him a piece of my mind but I think he was mostly irritated that he'd had to pause for me to move. by Walkingwalking123 (Tue 15th Aug 2023 2:59pm)
