  • Who cares? Keeps a part of our cultural heritage alive and has absolutely zero disadvantages, so if someone doesn't care about the cultural heritage part (fair enough, that's not everybody's cup of tea) it still doesn't affect them in any way whatsoever. Folk who get their knickers in a twist about gaelic signage need to give their heads a wobble. by redligand (Sun 12th Dec 2021 11:11am)
  • You'll get a letter from Scott & Co demanding full payment. Then you phone Scott & Co and explain you obvious can't pay it off in full and they'll set up a payment plan for you. They might be stubborn about it at first but if they are just say you'll submit your settlement offer to pay in installments in writing and do that, registered post. As long as your offer obviously isn't ridiculous they'll accept it or something close to it, particularly with written evidence that you've made a genuine attempt to resolve the issue. Don't stress about it. by redligand (Wed 22nd Dec 2021 1:27pm)
  • Yeah, but sometimes they pretend they won't on the phone and do the whole tough guy act. At that stage I wouldn't argue with them and just say you'll put your proposed agreement in writing. If it's even at all reasonable there's no way they'll turn it down. Good point about email. Just do that. If there's documented evidence of you making a reasonable offer there's no way they're going to pursue it through the courts. by redligand (Wed 22nd Dec 2021 7:34pm)
  • Lived in Glasgow for nearly 20 years and know many people who support many different local teams and I know precisely zero people who have been stabbed because of the football team they support. In fact, I don't know anyone who's been stabbed for any reason. I think you should ignore silly rumours and cultural stereotypes around what Glasgow is like. Same basic rules apply here as in any western European city. by redligand (Thu 23rd Dec 2021 1:19pm)

  • Merchant City Festival should be on at some point over that period. While not an incredible spectacle or anything like that it does bring a wee buzz to that area of town, lots of local creatives, musicians etc. If you can hire a car and don't mind an early start, Glencoe is in daytrip distance for some classic Scottish landscapes. Not quite as spectacular as some of the stuff further north but anything beyond Glencoe is probably an overnight trip. If you like to cycle, you can hire a bike and cycle to Loch Lomond/Balloch, which is beautiful. It's about 90 minutes - 2 hours by bike and there's a single direct cycle path from the city all the way there. Once you get through Yoker & Clydebank and get the suit of armour off, its a lovely countryside ride. If you can't be bothered cycling back, trains direct from Balloch to Glasgow will allow bikes. by redligand (Sat 22nd Jan 2022 9:11am)

  • Job market comes down to whisky makers vs whisky tasters. Spend too long in either role and the other seems like a promotion so it works itself out cyclically and everyone is happy. The biggest cultural divide in Scotland is sectarianism. This is basically all about white pudding suppers. White pudding is a staple part of the daily diet in the east of Scotland yet only 50 miles to the west nobody knows wtf a "white pudding" even is. Don't even mention red pudding. That's taking your life in your hands wherever you are in the country. by redligand (Sun 20th Mar 2022 2:30am)
  • It is as safe as any other large European city, which is to say your chances of encountering trouble are not zero but are very, very low. "Rowdy" behaviour is common in the evenings on a weekend but is rarely a direct threat. I wouldn't express strong opinions to strangers on the subject of Irish politics, sectarianism or the Rangers/Celtic football rivalry. If you're not Scottish, I also wouldn't express strong opinions to strangers on Scottish independence but this is quite a bit less sensitive. Of course, like anywhere else, there are dodgy areas but you're unlikely to wander into any of those accidentally. Most of them are in the Northern and Eastern suburbs. The dodgiest areas in the city centre are increasingly gentrified. by redligand (Wed 6th Apr 2022 12:26pm)
  • To be honest, I've not been able to find a good Chinese on just eat in my area (northeast) so any tips would be great. Absolutely no decent, thick, peanutty satays round here. Most of the "satay" seems to be something very similar to standard Chinese curry sauce. by redligand (Sat 9th Apr 2022 11:53pm)
  • Unless you're being sponsored in your PhD by a company or organisation who is committing to employ you at the end, please, please, please do not allow yourself to believe that a PhD in a science subject is a ticket to employment when you graduate. The job market for science and tech postgraduates can be extremely competitive and it is not at all uncommon for people with advanced degrees in "highly desirable" fields to struggle to find permanent employment after graduation. Sadly too many people make the assumption that "PhD means highly qualified therefore super-employable". Doing a PhD alone will absolutely not be taken by a bank as a guarantee of long term income over a mortgage repayment period. by redligand (Mon 18th Apr 2022 6:16pm)
  • Learn a language Learn a musical instrument (initial cost to buying the instrument but the most common ones - guitar & keyboard - you can pick up an absolutely adequate instrument for not much cash and they are largely free of cost thereafter) Running (decent trainers is the only cost) Gardening if you have a garden Writing (poetry, fiction, review music/food/films/whatever that you like and build towards submitting your writing to magazines or other publishers) Geocaching Art (some small costs depending on what you want to do) Volunteering Photography (principles of composition and working with light can be learned with just your phone but definitely could get very expensive if you want to take it further) Upcycling junk into stuff you want to use Electronics (components & breadboard are very cheap) Learn coding by redligand (Fri 22nd Apr 2022 6:26pm)

  • I know lots of English people with English accents in Glasgow and I can't think of any time they've had any problem whatsoever. Glasgow is a large city with all sorts of people with all sorts of accents. That said, I'm sure there are some fucking idiots who *might* give you some shit about your accent but there are fucking idiots looking for excuses for trouble in any major city. But honestly they're few and far between and I really wouldn't worry about it. 99%+ of the people you encounter in Glasgow will not give the slightest shit about your accent or the fact you're from England. by redligand (Sun 1st May 2022 10:43pm)
  • NCR7 up to Balloch and back is nice. Also: Glasgow Green, up saltmarket, high street, past St Mungo's Primary, up onto Baird Street, double back to Spiers Wharf, follow the canal to the locks then break off down the side of Kelvin until you get to Kelvingrove Park, down to the Clyde, back along Broomielaw to Glasgow Green. That's a nice wee city loop. First part has a lot of traffic but once you hit Spiers Wharf it's mostly traffic free. by redligand (Sun 1st May 2022 11:18pm)
  • What problems do you anticipate? Yes, you're free to take photos in public places in Scotland. Some parts of Loch Lomond have camping restrictions but you're obviously still free to visit them and take as many photos as you want as long as you don't set up camp. I can't think of any issue whatsoever, unless these are photographs that could possibly be interpreted as indecent by passers by - in which case just try to be discrete. by redligand (Wed 11th May 2022 8:51pm)
  • Seconded. And also walkable distance to the Hydro if you don't mind a 20-30 minute walk. The walk is straightforward once you get to the Clyde. I'd definitely walk this rather than pay for a taxi, especially with the shit taxi situation in town just now, but YMMV. by redligand (Mon 16th May 2022 10:53pm)
  • You can walk to the Hydro from both of these depending on your definition of a walkable distance. I'd definitely argue these were both walking distance but also far enough that some people might not agree. by redligand (Mon 16th May 2022 10:56pm)

  • 56k is quite a lot in Glasgow. You won't be considered wealthy but it's certainly well above average and you could live very comfortably. Can't say what living standard would be like compared to the salary in India. I wouldn't call a 56k lifestyle "lavish" but definitely in the very comfortable range where you will not worry about money and will have a significant amount of disposable income. by redligand (Sat 4th Jun 2022 1:16pm)
  • Uber in Glasgow is utter shit these days and I actually binned the app on Friday. Expect to wait a significant period of time for a driver to confirm. It regularly cycles through 10 to 20+ nearby drivers who turn you down before you get a confirmation. I have like a 4.98 rating as a customer too. And its not like I'm talking about long trips, 3 to 4 miles into city centre/west end, that sort of thing. Price can also vary wildly. It's also not unheard of to have a driver confirm and then cancel on you. Completely shocking service for uncompetitive prices. The only benefit used to be convenience and they don't even have that any more with the length of time it now takes to find a driver who will accept your fare. by redligand (Mon 13th Jun 2022 8:02pm)

  • If you're happy for the cat to be in the hold to Heathrow in one situation and also happy to consider travelling overland from Amsterdam to Glasgow in an alternative situation there's a really easy compromise. by redligand (Sun 26th Jun 2022 6:31pm)
  • I was thinking more like overland from Heathrow to Glasgow is significantly easier than overland from Amsterdam to Glasgow. I mean I know they said they can get the cat in the cabin to Amsterdam but also seemed happy with the cat in the hold to Heathrow but were bothered about the fact the cat couldn't get on a connecting flight Heathrow to Glasgow. So cat in the hold to Heathrow then overland to Glasgow? Seems the obvious compromise. by redligand (Sun 26th Jun 2022 8:32pm)
  • Surely in the USA that's just a daily commute! Joking aside, you can do it in 6 hours if you leave after the evening rush hour. Less if you take an "independent" approach to motorway speed laws, as many do. And it's waaaaaaaay shorter than overland from Amsterdam! by redligand (Sun 26th Jun 2022 9:33pm)
  • What any one, two or more people choose to do for their own gratification in the privacy of their own homes is absolutely none of my business. As long as it doesn't involve people who can't reasonably consent or practices that can't be consented to I really don't think it's my place to even have an opinion. Good luck to them, I hope they're having fun. by redligand (Sun 26th Jun 2022 9:50pm)
  • You can get counselling for free pretty quickly through occupational health channels in some jobs. Particularly public sector and in my experience it doesn't necessarily have to have anything to do with your work. I realise not every employer will offer this but it's worth asking the question. I didn't know it was even an option until my boss at the time put me forward for it due to some issues I was having with mental health a few years ago. And these were not issues *caused* by my work. I had a series of regular appointments within 2 weeks of submitting the paperwork. by redligand (Wed 29th Jun 2022 3:20pm)

  • You are talking what is colloquially known as "mince". Lots of planes and vapour trails visible due to the clear weather and they're all commercial aircraft. • It's the East of Glasgow, most generously described as anything from Calton eastwards but some would place the boundary further East than that. It generally has more poverty than the west end of the city and therefore is the target of dismissive and tedious classist attitudes from the overprivileged as demonstrated in the post you are replying to. Ask people what part of Glasgow they are from if you like. by redligand (Wed 13th Jul 2022 12:11pm)
  • It is becoming increasingly gentrified. Especially around the Barras. All the old trad pubs & greasy spoons are slowly disappearing and craft beer & brioche burger type joints are metastasising from the city centre/merchant city. In a few years Calton will be another trendy area and locals will be priced out. by redligand (Wed 13th Jul 2022 12:19pm)
  • Don't get me wrong, I do enjoy the occasional craft beer and brioche burger but we don't need more of that at the expense of local heritage & character. by redligand (Wed 13th Jul 2022 12:36pm)

  • BBC natural history stuff is arguably peerless across the world. I think we kind of take the Attenborough stuff for granted but the work that goes into those documentaries is astounding. Not even just for Attenborough himself, he's a national treasure but really just a talisman these days. The true genius is in the production and cinematography. by redligand (Sat 16th Jul 2022 2:09pm)
  • Is the whole success/money is everything thing really as culturally ingrained as it seems? You get it to a minor degree here in the UK but I think most people here generally value contentment over "success" and recognise that these two things aren't necessarily always good bedfellows. by redligand (Tue 19th Jul 2022 10:17am)
  • Rugby players? Boxers? by redligand (Thu 21st Jul 2022 3:04pm)

  • Most people walking about in Glasgow wearing green, blue or orange probably haven't had the football connotations even cross their mind. You'll be absolutely fine. Of course there are certain pubs where wearing the wrong colour might be seen as a provocation but you're unlikely to wander into one of those without knowing what you're doing. by redligand (Sun 7th Aug 2022 10:18pm)

  • Campsies? The Campsie Glen car park has great views of the night sky when it's clear. One thing to bear in mind is that the peak of the perseids this year coincides with a full moon making it too bright to see the meteor shower in all its glory. So don't expect anything mind blowing this year. by redligand (Thu 11th Aug 2022 9:49pm)

  • If anything it's gotten very slightly better compared to 20-30 years ago. Still a very long way to go yet. But it doesn't seem quite as pervasive as it seemed when I was growing up. Or that could just be the fact that you're exposed to loads of different subcultures in school & the like and as I've grown older I just have a social bubble where I don't see much sectarianism. It at least doesn't seem to have become *worse*. by redligand (Thu 25th Aug 2022 6:19am)

  • You never "have" to cycle at the "side" of the road. You are totally entitled to take as much space in a lane as makes you feel comfortable. With city centre cycling you will often both feel and be safer if you take a central lane position as is your right. Use cycle lanes where possible and where they're not full of broken glass, potholes and illegally stopped vehicles. Many of them are so poorly maintained you're better off in the road. Don't use footpaths unless clearly marked as shared use. by redligand (Wed 7th Sep 2022 3:44pm)

  • Coatbridge has a proud history but is sort of a dead end commuter town these days. Some exaggeration about its level if shiteholery here. Its hardly a beauty spot but like any large town it has some bad areas and some nice areas. Wouldn't really say it was Glasgow though. I know it's technically counted with Greater Glasgow for being part of the contiguous urban area (sort of) but being in Coatbridge doesn't *feel* like you're in Glasgow. If I was travelling to Coatbridge from Edinburgh I wouldn't say I was going to Glasgow. by redligand (Wed 12th Oct 2022 4:09pm)

So your tickets are scanned twice - once at the main entrance and once at the internal entrance for either balcony or standing. But once the main act has started the security are a bit less diligent. Certainly not guaranteed though. by redligand (Sun 13th Nov 2022 1:12pm)
  • The vast majority of people won't care at all. They'll notice you have an English accent but won't see that as unusual. Of the minority who would even acknowledge it, most will just be curious. Obviously there are some arseholes around but of the many English people I know living here none have ever had any bother based on their nationality. There are lots of accents from all over the world in Glasgow, English accents don't really stand out. That said, if you're speaking RP in a pub in Springburn or something I'd expect it would turn some heads. But regular English accents? Nobody cares. by redligand (Sun 20th Nov 2022 10:30am)

Honestly, the vast majority of people won't care in any way whatsoever (positive or negative), if they even register the fact that you're English. There are arseholes around who might make a problem out if it but they're few and fat between. • Not a teacher but part of my job is working with secondary schools and I know a lot of teachers socially and professionally. Whether and when you will land a permanent job after qualifying very much depends on the subject. Biology and social subjects tend to have their pick of staff and there's a lot of competition for jobs. Schools can't get physics teachers though so qualifying in that subject is almost guaranteed work. I think home economics is similar. And PE teachers seem to do well. The teachers I know tend to either love it or hate it. I think it depends on a lot. The school, the management, your colleagues, your attitude. It really does have to seen as a vocation I think. Despite the holidays he workload is ferocious and teachers often seem to have to account for lots of stuff completely beyond their control, like pupil behaviour and performance which can be incredibly stressful. High school teachers do not have enough non-teaching time in the working day to deal with admin, marking, planning and other paperwork. Teachers absolutely spend a lot of time working in evenings and weekends and there is an expectation of taking on extracurricular roles (not obligatory but this is definitely something you will have to do to even get a sniff of a permanent job or promotion). I could imagine the workload would be very depressing if you didn't truly love what you do. I know teachers who are utterly miserable in their jobs. I know teachers who thrive in the job and find it very rewarding. by redligand (Sun 11th Dec 2022 7:55pm)

  • Surely days like these are just what you make of them on your own terms. Of course bars will be overcrowded and noisy. I used to enjoy that and the camaraderie among strangers on hogmanay. Now I can't be fucked with the crowds and noise I don't bother. A low key house party with a few good friends is more up my street these days but if I couldn't be arsed with that I just wouldn't bother. You don't need others' validation to enjoy or not enjoy something. There's nothing wrong with wanting to go get smashed in a heaving bar and nothing wrong with wanting to stay home and go to bed at 9pm. The answer to "am I the only one" is no, of course you're not, you don't need to excuse or explain the way you feel and you don't need strangers to validate your feelings. by redligand (Tue 27th Dec 2022 12:32am)

  • If you're into nature and hiking I'd say Glasgow is top of your list in that respect. You'd be an hours drive from the Scottish Highlands which has some of best options for outdoors activities of anywhere on your list. It's one of the biggest tourism draws to Scotland and there's everything from gentle walks through spectacular scenery to very serious mountain climbing. You'd have some of the best hill climbing north of the Alps on your doorstep. Bergen might compete in some respects - never been but the west of Norway has a reputation for being spectacular - but the weather there is more severe. Vegan options are plentiful. The bar/pub culture is incredibly rich and diverse in the city and Scottish bar/pub culture is generally superb. Grocery shopping is comparable to any other large city. Public transport is reasonable: the overground rail system is pretty good and there's a limited metro system; buses I don't use very much so can't comment. Downsides: possibly housing is challenging just now. I've not had to get a new place in several years but anecdotally I've heard of a lot of competition. They bake them at like 4/5am and they're in the shops for 6am. Hence "morning" rolls. They might get another fresh delivery in the afternoon. • Glaz-go. While Glesga is a legitimate pronunciation you shouldn't attempt this unless you have a particular type of Glaswegian accent. You could easily sound like a wanker. Even though I have a Scottish accent (generic with a slight Edinburgh lilt), if I used "Glesga" I'd either sound like I was taking the piss or I was trying too hard to sound local. It would be like me being in New York, speaking to someone as I normally talk but pronouncing New York as "NOOO YOYKE". I'd sound like a twat. by redligand (Sat 15th Apr 2023 7:25am)
  • Yeah, you can't go wrong with Glaz-go. Even Glass-cow the American way would be okay, I guess. People find that pronunciation amusing and funny but they'd mostly understand it was at least authentic in an American accent. So it's not like a piss-take or an affectation. But a simple Glaz-go will sail past the ears of even the most cynical interlocutor. by redligand (Sat 15th Apr 2023 7:46am)
  • Go out for meals. Try out a new restaurant every weekend. You will drink less because you can't sink pint after pint in a restaurant, you still keep the chat, banter and shared company of a pub, and it's actually cheaper than going out and getting smashed all night...even in relatively expensive restaurants. My group of friends started doing this quite regularly when we also realised going out to get wankered every weekend no longer held the same appeal. And it's great. You can still have a few drinks if you feel like you want to but the focus is less on the drinking. by redligand (Sat 15th Apr 2023 4:02pm)

It's just incredibly arrogant and self-important to think everyone else should have to look at your "art". Find an appropriate venue for your art. If so it's probably arsehole behaviour. See things such as: parking over two spaces in a quiet car park; using someone else's bin...and so on. I'd imagine if everyone in your block decided to chain up 4 bikes in the stairwell it would be a significant issue so even if the stairwell is wide enough that it doesn't present an obstruction on its own, it's still self important behaviour. by redligand (Thu 29th Jun 2023 7:09am)

I'm sure you have the imagination to put yourself in a similar mindset. • I used to run three nights a week in Glasgow Green. Up Greendyke St, along Templeton Street, Arcadia Street, Down Kings Drive, along the river back to the start. Which is almost exactly two miles. So three laps is roughly 10k. Often mixed it up by building in mini loops and criss-crosses through the park. • If you're talking about unwanted verbal attention as a safety issue you're probably right. Physical violence? Extremely unlikely overall and young males are by *far and away* the demographic most likely to be physically attacked by strangers. Female presenting likely puts you more at risk from unwanted verbal attention, but in terms of actual violence it's safer to be female presenting than male.. by redligand (Fri 11th Aug 2023 8:45am)
  • You're misunderstanding the difference between unlikely and never. The facts are that males are overwhelmingly more likely to be attacked by strangers than females. The opposite is true domestically. by redligand (Fri 11th Aug 2023 8:53am)
  • Sure. Male aggression is a problem. No argument there. Most violent criminals are men and most victims of violent crime are men. Telling women that they are safe "nowhere" in Glasgow is ridiculous fearmongering though. Attacks by strangers are pretty rare on the whole, and if you're dividing it up into women and men (which they were doing) then actually women are least at risk in those two categories. Go into homes and the risk pattern flips. by redligand (Fri 11th Aug 2023 9:12am)
  • >P.s. at no point did I say it was safe for men, I simple asked OP to stay safe as it wasn't for women. So you would actually argue that there is "no place" in Glasgow that is safe for anyone at all, male or female? What do we mean by "safe" here? You're not "safe" crossing the road. You're not "safe" eating grapes. I very much get that male aggression is a societal problem in all sorts of ways. You'll get no argument from me on that point. What I'm objecting to here is the seeding of the idea that individual people need to be afraid of *going for a run* when actually they (male or female) are incredibly unlikely to come to any sort of harm at the hands of a stranger. There might be young women reading what you wrote who are now giving second thoughts to doing something as simple as getting some exercise in a public place, and it makes me a little sad. In terms of pure statistical risk, a woman is safer out for a jog than she is at home with a male partner! Edited: for heteronormative assumptions, swapped "her partner" for "a male partner" by redligand (Sat 12th Aug 2023 12:20pm)
  • I want my family not to be afraid of living full lives because they're trying to avoid tiny risks. by redligand (Sat 12th Aug 2023 12:39pm)
  • Yes. I absolutely would. I used to jog in Glasgow Green in the evening, year round, saw plenty of women out jogging. I never once came to harm and my mum or sister (or my daughter) would be statistically very much less likely to come to harm than me. I want my daughter to live a full life with a sensible approach to risk. I don't want her to be afraid of jogging in the city in the same way I don't want her to be afraid of crossing the road. That is, understand the risks but don't live in fear of them. Just look at the number of female joggers you see out and about in the city...the vast, *vast* majority of whom come to no harm. Are there *certain places* in Glasgow I wouldn't jog? Sure. Would I discourage others from jogging in those same places? Probably. by redligand (Sat 12th Aug 2023 12:35pm)

Standard "wacky student types have a minor run-in with the young team" incident, likely happens multiple times every night of every weekend. Your mate sounds like a right bell-end. by redligand (Sat 30th Sep 2023 9:15am)
  • Disposable vapes are the absolute worst consumer product around. For numerous reasons. Need banned asap. by redligand (Sat 30th Sep 2023 3:59pm)
  • >What will happen if I don’t pay? Realistically? Nothing. Don't listen to people telling you that you don't have to pay, though. Or that the fines are "unenforceable". They are absolutely enforceable. BUT if you ignore a one-off private parking fine the chances are high that it won't go beyond a series of threatening letters. Don't try this with council parking fines. by redligand (Sun 1st Oct 2023 11:30am)
  • >Ridiculous though if there’s a cinema and restaurants. It's not that ridiculous really. Tesco and the cinema are different businesses. Tesco likely have the contract with the parking company *precisely* because they want to discourage people using their parking spaces to visit the cinema and restaurants. I mean I'm not saying it's a good thing (or a bad thing) but it doesn't take a massive stretch of the imagination to work out why one business doesn't want people using their land to patronise another business. by redligand (Sun 1st Oct 2023 11:51am)
  • When these things do end up in court they usually side with the business. But it's almost always repeat offenders (like people who've been using a private care park for work for months and ignored the tickets). by redligand (Sun 1st Oct 2023 11:59am)
  • >Unenforceable in Scotland. This is not true. Courts can and do enforce payment of private parking fines. They are unlikely to pursue it. But sometimes they do and more often than not the courts find in favour of the business. Look at the case of Carly Mackie. She believed this "private parking fines are illegal and unenforceable in Scotland" myth and racked up more than 200 tickets at a private car park. They pursued her and she had to pay £24,000. Here's what the judge said: >She stated that (effectively a protest position) parking charges were illegal and unenforceable in Scotland and that she could park where she liked as her father's guest. She entirely misdirected herself on both the law and the contractual chain in this case. by redligand (Sun 1st Oct 2023 1:58pm)
  • I suppose, yeah, in passing it all does kind of look like one big car park, but the bit Tesco owns is clearly signposted as such and there are road markings. I'm not some kind of Tesco expert or anything hahaha, I just use that Tesco quite a bit. by redligand (Sun 1st Oct 2023 2:47pm)

  • It's because, like Brand, you are trying very hard to come across as eloquent and articulate but, also like Brand, you're way overcooking it. Your reply here is just another Brandism. by redligand (Tue 3rd Oct 2023 8:46pm)

  • Waxys next to Queen Street Station is a safe bet for showing rugby over football. But with such a big game and no major football happening I expect most pubs will be showing it. by redligand (Thu 5th Oct 2023 8:18pm)
  • It's as safe as any other large western European city. That is to say there is crime but individuals are very unlikely to come to any harm. by redligand (Sun 8th Oct 2023 9:42pm)
  • Let's accept that the Israeli state has done some awful shit in this lengthy conflict and shelve that for just a moment. Do *you* think it is okay for Hamas to execute children and parade around the stripped & desecrated corpses of innocent women? by redligand (Wed 11th Oct 2023 8:29pm)
  • Let's accept all of that and ask again: Do you think it's okay for Hamas to execute children and gleefully parade around and desecrate the stripped corpse of an innocent woman? by redligand (Wed 11th Oct 2023 8:49pm)
  • Galloway Forest National Park. Designated dark sky area and practically zero bams. by redligand (Sat 14th Oct 2023 8:46pm)
  • Jupiter in the east, pretty bright but not as bright as it gets. If you've got a decent set of binoculars you'll see its four biggest moons. Saturn also out in the southeast but much smaller. Download the stellarium app. That will show you what's in the sky in your location in real time. Free version is very capable. by redligand (Sat 14th Oct 2023 9:12pm)

  • It's cheaper for US production companies to ship a crew, actors etc over here and hire equipment than it is to get a permit to shoot in an American city. Which is kind of crazy. And Glasgow looks a lot like a US city, with its grid system and architecture. Not saying that's what's happening here specifically, but it is why a lot of big & small US productions have been shot here in the last 15 years. by redligand (Wed 1st Nov 2023 7:07pm)
  • There are two separate entrances to the balcony/main standing area. You can't get from one to the other without having your ticket checked. by redligand (Sat 4th Nov 2023 3:29pm)
  • Cycle in Glasgow year round. It's fine. Good gloves in winter are a must, cycling at speed in cold, wet, windy weather will freeze your hands to a painful degree. And take sensible precautions or have a back up plan for snow or significant ice. Get winter tyres, all bike shops will be able to recommend decent ones. Roads are usually gritted which makes below freezing temperatures less of a problem. In winter I find headwinds a much bigger annoyance than anything else, because I make sure my clothing and tyres are appropriate for cold, wet weather. by redligand (Sun 19th Nov 2023 10:37pm)
