  • I had a look on the map, there's two peaks near Byres road, one at the top of University Avenue, and one in Dowanhill. Byres road is actually a valley by Canazza (Fri 25th Jan 2019 10:15pm)
  • West end, 4pm today, no less than 4 buses turned up at once, all were the 77. Then 10 minutes later another 77 arrived. They're arriving all right. All at the same time. by Canazza (Sat 26th Jan 2019 9:59pm)

  • They didn't. [They've been in use for the same amount of time](https://www.skepticalscience.com/climate-change-global-warming-basic.html). The original 1975 paper that popularised both those terms was titled "Climatic Change: Are We on the Brink of a Pronounced Global Warming", in fact, "Climate Change" had been used in the scientific community since 1956. The media latched on to the last phrase and have only recently started changing which one they use at the exasperated urging of scientists. by Canazza (Fri 15th Feb 2019 5:48pm)

  • They tried to 'Modernise' it a few years back, changed the name, but eventually changed it back for whatever reason. It looks a lot brighter inside than it used to be after the renovation, and I think a lot of the old-man-pubness has gone (and I think most of them migrated to Orwells when they tried changing the name) by Canazza (Sun 24th Feb 2019 12:39pm)

  • You could visit the birthplace of Billy Connolly, admittedly it's a boarded-off piece of waste ground that splits Anderston and Finnieston... There is a nice statue of Charles Rennie Mackintosh opposite it so you wouldn't completely waste a journey :) by Canazza (Wed 13th Mar 2019 12:06pm)

  • I mean thankfully (hopefully) I'm only on the cane temporarily. I'd easily walk the distance normally (it's about 1.5 miles), but post surgery i can just about walk to the bus stop. Normally when i get the bus I'm travelling cross city and expect 2.40. It's just the fact that you have two fares. With a 45% price difference between them. And the occasional smarmy arse of a driver who'll rules lawyer a cripple. by Canazza (Fri 29th Mar 2019 7:40pm)

Don't remember much except we sat about for ages and I was bored stiff while we waited for my gran to pick up a teasmade. by Canazza (Sat 6th Apr 2019 9:18am)

  • The West End, like Finnieston, is full of roving Scissor gangs. East end, Dennistoun especially, is nothing but breweries and the drunken scum that attracts. South Side, nothing but young teams mugging people on the way to Hampden Park. Only safe area is the north of the city, Maryhill, Ruchill. Milton is a great place, especially for people who've moved up from England. by Canazza (Mon 15th Apr 2019 1:24pm)

We know how many keys, what type of keys, the colour of the keyring, the writing on the label. Everything needed to go to a lost-and-found and claim it's your own. Rule 1 of running a lost and found is announce you've found something but keep it vague. And if you do intend on posting a photo of if keep most of it out of sight and inform the person you handed it in to what you've shown so they know not to ask for that specific detail when determining who to give it to. Or supermarket brand Iron Brew (which is probably worse than boiled demon urine) Now it just tastes a bit naff. To the point that if my Gran bought it by accident I'd be fine to drink it. • Post-October is when the Winter weather starts to creep in, but you're mostly going to want to look in to wet-weather clothing than warm clothing (if it is too cold you can always add more layers) Buy a decent umbrella that can stand the wind (it's more often than not wet *and* windy). And when it's cold, the Wind makes it feel even colder. As for Thrift Stores around Glasgow University; [Byres Road and Dumbarton Road have quite a few charity stores](https://www.google.com/maps/search/charity+shops/@55.8728584,-4.3085797,16.75z). Though I've found that charity shops tend towards selling womens clothing (so if you're not willing to wear that you're options can be limited). There's Matalan and Primark in the town center, which do cheaper clothes. If you find it particularly unbearable there are a number of outdoor clothing outlets (closest to Glasgow Uni is probably Cotswolds at the bottom of Crow Road, but there are a few in town too) where you can get all-weather gear. by Canazza (Sun 16th Aug 2020 9:51am)

Sure, the fencing was still there, but even after they patched up the gap in the fence down the road from it they left it open. The nearest train station is Drumgelloch which is on the main line between Glasgow and Edinburgh with regular trains, but it's a bit of a trek by foot from Plains (about 30-40 minutes depending on what end of Plains you live in). Today it lasted about an hour. Tomorrow it'll go on from the moment schools are out, to about 10pm. At this time of year: 5th November and Diwali (14th November) are the only two days you should be have to prep your pets for. And I don't even have any pets by Canazza (Wed 4th Nov 2020 10:16pm)

  • [Pelican](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pelican_crossing) and [Puffin](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Puffin_crossing) Crossings, that cross over a single road, will not turn red unless the button is pressed. That's what they're there for. [Like this bit in Partick](https://www.google.com/maps/@55.8708458,-4.3025725,3a,75y,103.89h,95.07t/data=!3m6!1e1!3m4!1s-3G_5rjv7v8dmVvWBykV_g!2e0!7i16384!8i8192) At a Junction, it depends on the way the traffic goes. If it's a series of one-way streets (such as in town) then the green man will come up whenever the street your crossing has automatically gone red. It won't be automatic if more than one street can turn into the crossing. Take, for example, the junction of [St Vincent St and Wellington St](https://www.google.com/maps/@55.861955,-4.2597232,20z) Two one-way streets intersect like this: 1| V |2 -- V -- <<< <<< -- V -- 3| V |4 The pedestrian signals from Corner 1 to Corner 2, and from Corner 2 to Corner 4 will automatically turn green when traffic is stopped, during the normal cycle of the lights, to allow the traffic on the other street to go. The lights from Corner 1 to 3 and from 3 to 4 will never go green unless you press the button because, in the ordinary course of the traffics cycle, one road of traffic will always be at green and they can both turn into it. The signals only queue both streets to stop when the button is pressed. Now, take this bit of [Charing Cross](https://www.google.com/maps/@55.8663828,-4.2718748,53m/data=!3m1!1e3). Pedestrians are not allowed to cross at points where traffic can turn into it from two directions (due to the way the one-way system and islands are designed). At this intersection (and a few other bits of Charing Cross) the buttons do *absolutely* nothing. by Canazza (Thu 10th Dec 2020 4:39pm)

  • I'm not sure it's Tram lines either. [They never went to the Airport ](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Glasgow_Corporation_Tramways#/media/File:Glasgow_tram_map_1938.png) There *used* to be a botanic gardens rail station, but if it was a historical map it'd call Exhibition Center "Finnieston". It's got some of the Underground stations on it but there's no underground line marked (There's never been a train station at Cowcaddens) I honestly don't know what map this is supposed to be. by Canazza (Fri 11th Dec 2020 7:54pm)
  • > Exhibition Centre is between Anderston and Partick yes, I know, I live there. If it was a historical map (because it damn well doesn't match up with anything modern) then Exhibition center would either be Stobscross (1894-1959), Finnieston (1979 - 1986) or not there (it was closed for a while) by Canazza (Fri 11th Dec 2020 8:09pm)
  • It doesn't map to *anything* rail related in Glasgow. None of the 'lines' match up with anything, past or present. Like Howard Street? I'm pretty certain there has *never* been a station on Howard Street. There's no Cathcart Circle. It doesn't have the Argyle Line, nor does it have the Underground (though it has some of the stations marked, like Cowcaddens) Charing Cross - Partick doesn't exist and has existed pretty much since the inception of the Glasgow rail network (Charing Cross opened in 1886) I'm having real trouble trying to figure out what it's trying to depict other than random bits of Glasgow connected in a somewhat random fashion. by Canazza (Fri 11th Dec 2020 8:06pm)
  • I don't even think it's that. There's a tonne of bus routes missing, and it maps the Clyde tunnel going to Ibrox and not Govan or Linthouse? by Canazza (Fri 11th Dec 2020 8:12pm)

  • > if folks want to risk themselves let them I'm clearly *not* preaching to the choir cause you ain't listening. • They do look like they've been out there a while, so there might be no harm here; but as someone who's dealt with lost-and-found before I'll post again what I usually post when people find lost property. Say where you found it, describe the item only, leaving out key details so the real owner can identify it (in this case I'd have said something like "distinctive Skull keyring" but nothing more), or if you have to show a photo, hide something significant about the item from the photo (like the keyring). Think of the worst-case scenario: Someone close to the person who lost those keys, but holds ill-will to them, contacts you and says they're the owner. They now have keys to their house. by Canazza (Thu 31st Dec 2020 2:47pm)

I've seen people just dump entire bags of breadcrumbs on the ground and jog on. No idea which animals would eat it. Yesterday there was half a loaf, not even crumbs, sitting on the street in Finnieston. Only things that was tearing into it were seagulls. I get the stereotype of the 'sit in the park and talk to pigeons' lady, but honestly that's not what I've observed at all. by Canazza (Thu 27th May 2021 9:52am)

If all 5 million people get the leaflet, that's 5 million sheets of paper, giving out useful public safety information. When you consider how many pages an average tabloid issue prints, and how many they circulate each year (the Metro, the Sun and the Daily mail all peaked above 1m copies each last year), it's an absolute miniscule number and for a much worthier cause. by Canazza (Thu 27th May 2021 2:12pm)

  • Speed/Infrastructure wise you've got 3 choices: Virgin, Hyperoptic and BT Openreach all maintain their own networks, with most providers running off the Openreach network. Hyperoptic's is the newest, fastest network, but lacks coverage. Their vans are all over the West end plugging new areas in weekly, they've not quite got full coverage of Finnieston yet so check your postcode. And maybe check it again in a month or two. Virgin, afaik, have full coverage of Glasgow with their fibre network. I don't believe they're as fast as Hyperoptic yet but they're faster than the other offerings. There's been murmerings that they might open their infrastructure up to other ISPs soon. BT Openreach is what everyone else runs off of. It's the slowest, but you have the most options for individual ISPs, it's where you'll find the cheapest prices and your best bet is to use a comparison site. If you're willing to compromise on price for a bit better customer service I've heard good things about PlusNet, and nothing but horror stories from Talk Talk. by Canazza (Thu 3rd Jun 2021 4:15pm)

It was very 'organically' built. By 1807 not only was there a grid system in place, but it's clear from the map that there was empty space reserved for future roads. This was 4 years before New Yorks plan was implemented. So New York was clearly planned after Glasgow. And while your mention of Carribbean grid layouts is very likely the source of both Glasgow and New Yorks influences directly... however [St Petersburg](https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/f/fc/Homann_MapSpb1716-17.png) predates them both, planned in 1716. by Canazza (Thu 1st Jul 2021 5:52pm)

  • Yeah, the only direct trains to Edinburgh from Partick are the stopper trains. If you're doing a 9am commute to Edinburgh, there's a 0723 train to QS Lower at 0730, then change to Upper. Gives you 15 minutes to get onto the 0745 Express, which gets you in at 0837. If you do miss that train, you can get the Direct Edinburgh train at 0730 at Partick that gets you in at 0844... or get off at Queen Street at 0736 and jaunt upstairs to catch the 0745 Express. By that time, though, you might not get the good seats. by Canazza (Wed 2nd Mar 2022 4:47pm)
  • https://www.glasgowairport.com/to-and-from/bus/ - Depends on how much 'a lot' of luggage is, I guess Airport Express 500 goes straight to Buchanan Bus Station via Central Station (ish) and Queen St Station. It *is* more expensive (£8.50/adult) First Bus 77 is a commuter service that takes longer to get to town, but if you happen to be moving anywhere on that [route](https://www.glasgowairport.com/media/2kmg3zca/gla-bus-routes.png?width=500&height=416.6666666666667), it'll obviously be better, and it's about half the price. It goes Renfrew, Braehead, QEUH, West Govan... Patrick? \(goddamnit\), through Finnieston and Buchanan Bus Station. You'll need to buy a First Day ticket at around £4.20 I think, but that gets you on all First Buses all day. There's also an exchange at Braehead shopping center that has buses that go all over. If you want to plan a journey I recommend using http://www.traveline.info - put in your start point and your destination postcode and it'll try and get you the fastest routes. by Canazza (Thu 10th Mar 2022 8:25am)

Buchanan Bus Station has buses that go *anywhere* in Glasgow, but for 2 Adults alone it's not worth it if you don't need to swap (The toddler goes free regardless) It depends really on how much heavy lifting the 'A lot of luggage' is doing. While the Airport 500 is expected to cope with luggage, you might not want to swap to local buses if you can't stow most of it under your seat or you might be taking up buggy/wheelchair space. Again, as with what other ppl said. Taxi is the guaranteed way of doing it with all your luggage. However, landing at 4pm, getting in the taxi after 5pm, will see you sitting in rush hour traffic. And it's by far the most expensive option. by Canazza (Thu 10th Mar 2022 10:15am)

Leave one in the letterbox but hanging out. Come back in a couple of days and see which houses still have leaflets sticking out. Especially at the start of the summer holidays. • Town's mostly fine for a wheelchair. The main streets are wide and there's always low bits at crossings. Plus, because it's town, there's rarely anyone parked on them. Getting to the Hydro from town, the Broomielaw has no crossings so there's no stop/start. It's wide and flat and decently paved, with ramps rather than steps where there's a height change. Only problems are once you get off the main streets, like Argyle St or Buchanan St. Blythswood hill is a bastard. It's steep, the pavements get narrower, and there are people parking on street during working hours. by Canazza (Mon 27th Jun 2022 9:27pm)

The statue looks straight down South Hanover Street (not just Hanover St) and, since the St Enochs Center isn't there, has a great view out over the City. • As much as I miss living around that area, I do *not* miss those traffic lights. The amount of times I've nearly been run over during a green man is ridiculous. If it's not people squeaking the reds, it's people ignoring the filter lanes (yes, you're *not* supposed to turn right from the centre lane, that's why there's a goddamn traffic island), or delivery vans parking over the crossing. I even had one dude trailing a caravan just ignore the red light and nearly run over myself and an old lady with a trollybag, turning from Argyle St onto North St, and get shirty with me because I was in the middle of the road. • Not sure what this has specifically to do with *Glasgow* you might get more help on other subreddits. But, as a someone who's been in the industry for over a decade (as web developer as opposed to a designer) I can say there's no single 'UI Design' role any more. It's normally wrapped up in UX (User Experience) and you will be expected to know some kind of coding. At the very least you'll need to know CSS replacements like LESS or SASS, and some Javascript or Typescript. You'll also need to know about wireframing and prototyping. You might want to take a look at some [Pluralsight](https://www.pluralsight.com/paths/ux-design) courses on the topic by Canazza (Fri 5th Aug 2022 3:46pm)
  • And are those designers *just* designing, or are they prototyping, wireframing or implementing any of their designs? Even if it's just proof of concept? And I'm sorry if just being a mere developer means I can't give someone advice getting into the industry from my experience. Stacking some UX experience on top of your design experience is going to show you have a willingness to branch out and get you into better paying positions. Or are you in one of those cheap dev shops where they just reskin Bootstrap and call it a day? by Canazza (Fri 5th Aug 2022 4:12pm)
  • > Whilst UI design jobs do exist, do bear in mind that for you to be great at the job, you do need to have a solid understanding of good UX because great UI is about the entire experience as a whole, and not just visual components. • ISP is responsible for it once it's inside your house. I had issues with my broadband dropping after moving home and the Sky engineer rewired the Sky connector in my house, but couldn't touch the openreach owned box outside. The way he explained it to me was that Openreach won't come out until the ISP engineers come out and survey it and 'fix' any problems they can. Call your ISP. Tell them your internet service is degraded and there's signs of damage on the physical cable (DONT tell them you *want* a new cable.) and they'll get an engineer called out. If they don't, kick up a stink about not getting the advertised service and/or not being able to work from home/etc. Talk to the engineer about it. They're usually sound and know what they're on about. They'll do what they can then get you to wait a couple of days to see if the problem persists. If it does, then your ISP has the evidence they need to call out an Openreach engineer. Go through your ISP again. They should escalate it up to Openreach. They should be your first port of call for any problems. It's a bit of a faff, but that's just the way it is. by Canazza (Sun 7th Aug 2022 5:49pm)
  • They way they explained it to me was that, until it gets into the connector box, it's the ISP's responsibility. And from the way the OP described it, it comes in through the window, through the roof, and then into their connector box. It's entirely the ISP's responsibility until it gets to the box. by Canazza (Mon 8th Aug 2022 9:09am)

[These are all the core paths in Glasgow (pdf)](https://www.glasgow.gov.uk/CHttpHandler.ashx?id=14559&p=0) - Core paths include: - Broomielaw walkway - Buchanan St - Sauchiehall St (Pedestrianised area) - Footbridges - Kelvin Walkway - The weirdly disjointed walkway along the White Cart Every river is a core path so you're technically not breaking the law to cycle down the Clyde. by Canazza (Mon 22nd Aug 2022 7:30am)

  • Depends on the number of people I guess. So I'll assume a large enough number to require booking a few tables, but not enough to want to book a function room: Chakko (St Vincent Street) - Bombay/Irani tapas-style dishes. Really good food, but a difficult ask if anyone is a picky eater. Lots of spicy food. Baby Grand (Charing Cross) - European (Good place for drinks too, popular with pre-theater crowd) Di Maggios (Royal Exchange Square) - Italian (yes, there are better Italian restaurants but it's got a wide enough menu that even the pickiest eaters will find something, and you can book an entire section and not feel like you're being interrupted/interrupting regular punters) West End: La Vita Sputini (Byres Road) - Italian. Again, like Di Maggios, it's a good enough experience to be business neutral. Celino's (Partick) - Italian. Really good, and has an excellent cheese deli. Don't know enough about GWR/Anniesland to recommend anything there though by Canazza (Fri 21st Oct 2022 12:24pm)

  • I have to agree with that assessment. I've had a look at the map too and there's just a large swathe labelled 'Westend' No Woodlands, Dowanhill, Hillhead, Kelvindale, Kelvinside. Hell, the entirety of Broomhill is lumped in with it too. One hex is labelled Thornwood and the rest is 'Partick' or 'Westend' by Canazza (Sun 23rd Oct 2022 10:58pm)

It's close, but not quite. Like they took that map and redrew the borders slightly to be suitably different enough to not be obvious. • I've been trying to write this in a way that doesn't sound callous or dismissive but here we go: What is it you want out of church, and faith. For while they are linked, Church and Faith are two very different things. And you seem unsure about how church even works. Ask yourself "What am I looking for?" and ask again if you can find that elsewhere. Are you lonely? Looking for community? Are you at a mental low point? If, at the end of your questions, you figure you can't find it anywhere but in God, figure out specifically what you want from God. Faith can be a good motivator. I know from experience that it can get you in a better mental space. I was in a Church. I left after certain views I had conflicted with the people there. I came to realise it wasn't the Church that was fulfilling, it was the community and the outreach - helping others - that changed my headspace. And I've continued to find that elsewhere. But, if after your own self-reflection you *do* want to go to a Church. Just show up on a Sunday. No-one checks your membership. Rule of thumb: A good church won't expect you to put money in the donations basket if it's your first time. A bad church will be subtly (or unsubtly) pushing everyone to donate. In my experience there are three kinds of churches: 1) Churches where people are *going through the motions*. These are your usual Church of Scotland churches, and the entire Catholic church. People turn up sing some hymns, do some prayers, kids go to Sunday School. There might be some tea afterwards. Maybe a mid-week volunteer cafe. That kind of thing. There's a strong community sense, but can be quite insular. They'll normally welcome a new face warmly. Most people are there through inertia, rather than explicit faith. This is a good place to find Community. 2) The *Trendy* Church. Often these are baptist churches, but some are CoS, or some kind of weird denomination. They'll sing hymns but they might have a band, rather than an organ (or both). I've found churches like these to be quite Clique-y, and trend towards students, early 20s to mid 30s. The bad ones will eschew preaching for advertising (showing off all the good they're doing, followed by a sermon on tithing). They often have overseas outreach. This is a good place to find 'Faith'. Often these denominations promote personal study and growth. 3) The Evangelical Churches. These are the kind of ones you see on American TV. Dancing in the aisle, speaking in tongues, that kind of thing. Regardless of their eccentricities, some of them are good - with a focus on outreach and charity (so long as it brings in more followers) - and some of them are the worst-of-the-worst scammy cash grabs. They often also have the most extreme views and take the bible *entirely* literally. They are often backed up by Sister-churches in the US. They'll accept you warmly (unless they find out you're one of the people they don't like - and that varies from church to church). You'll definitely have the best time at an good Evangelical church so long as you fit in and can swallow the weirdness. But it can be a hard pill to swallow. by Canazza (Tue 31st Jan 2023 4:28pm)

Is now the St Enochs Center 2) 100 Queen Street - Offices 3) 110 Queen Street - Also Offices 4) On the broomielaw, it's a Virgin Hotel 5) 100 Bothwell Street - Also also Offices 6) New City Road, Chinatown Restaurant. The domed building on the left is still there, and the rest of the block was demolished for the M8. 7) Nithsdale Mission Hall on Nithsdale Drive (Destroyed by bombing in 1943). I believe it's the site of the Vauxhall Dealership. 8) Palace Bingo Hall and Citizens Theatre on Gorbals street. It's still the Citizens Theatre. Just a different Building. Also the far-end one is offices. 9) Rutherglen Road/Polmadie Road. Not sure exactly where, but since the M74 is there now, and that whole section of road has changed, it's either the Cash and Carry or residential housing 10) High Street, Glasgow University's old College.
