  • If it wasn't for a couple of groups I need Facebook for, I'd be shot of it. I called 90% of my "friends" decided I didn't care what people I never speak to are doing, and don't care about telling them what I'm doing. Removed it from phone, do much better. • *yawn* up earlier than I'd like as I'm off to start a slimming class with my wife. Not entirely sure why we need to go to the 7:30 group though. I need coffee! 😴 by Gillian_T (Sat 27th Apr 2019 7:12am)
  • My solution to a bad cold is ton"Chainsmoke" tea. Essentially, drink as much tea as possible, as fast as possible. When you've got under 1/4 a mug left, kettle on. It seems to work for me. Also probably worth taking a multivitamin. Hope you're feeling better soon by Gillian_T (Sat 27th Apr 2019 8:04am)
  • There's a pub quiz tonight in cafe soulsa, a fundraiser if anyone is at a loose end and fancies a quiz. I don't have many details, as I'm not an organiser of it, but it starts around 7 and it's for the Glasgow branch of WEP. by Gillian_T (Thu 2nd May 2019 1:54pm)
  • I was in once for lunch, it took 2 hours, incredibly slow service, and food wasn't great. Never been in since, I just stick to Koh I Noor these days by Gillian_T (Thu 2nd May 2019 5:30pm)
  • The anytime ticket *is* the standard fare, there *is* a discount for travelling off peak. It's not the other way round. I get why people are annoyed as the prices, especially outside the SPT region are ridiculous, but the cheap off peak tickets are discounted. travel off peak is cheaper to try to encourage people to travel at the times trains are quieter (buses used to, not sure if they still do, discounted off peak tickets) so they aren't running empty, and it might reduce the number of passengers travelling at peak times. I like to get into town as early as I can when shopping, I hate crowds, but I wait til off peak ticket pricing to save a few quid, just don't wait til lunch time when the place is mobbed if I'm in town during the week. by Gillian_T (Thu 9th May 2019 8:22pm)
  • Aye, totally. I forgot we must always slag off scotrail even when they're not actually doing anything wrong. I'll report for deprogramming now by Gillian_T (Fri 10th May 2019 9:27am)
  • Aye, so was mine... by Gillian_T (Fri 10th May 2019 9:52am)
  • Of they charge the cheaper price at "peak" and raise it the rest of the time, the service won't be sustainable. They need to cover the cost of the service running nearly empty with the fares at peak times. It costs roughly the same to run a bus (I assume train too) empty as full, so the costs need to be covered somehow. I can't think how to cover it other than nationalisation and tax, without paying more at peak times. by Gillian_T (Fri 10th May 2019 12:03pm)
  • Cheaper to drive, if parking is free, and you ignore maintenance, insurance etc (at least that was my experience) I'm significantly cheaper to travel by public transport than to drive to work. At the moment I use bus, rather than train but in my last job, it was about the same either way. Train was faster for that commute too. by Gillian_T (Fri 10th May 2019 12:06pm)
  • If they don't charge more there'll be no service as it'll have gone bust. It either needs to drop a tiny amount with off peak jumping in price, so it's flat rate or stick with current system. Which was the point of my post. Only other way to do it would be only run certain trains at rush hour, which wouldn't be a great service for anyone by Gillian_T (Fri 10th May 2019 5:07pm)
  • yes, i get that a full train is cheaper per passenger to run, that's pretty obvious. that's how the trains can be run basically empty the rest of the time without making a massive loss. Given the number of rail and bus routes that only exist due to subsidies as it is, a shakeup of the system is needed, but I honeslty don't know how to do it without risking cutting off entire communities because their town isn't profitable to run a service to. by Gillian_T (Sat 11th May 2019 12:18am)
  • okay, so we stop subsidy, charge the off peak fare 24/7 and everyone gets a free puppy? the government subsidies are to cover running the less profitable routes, bus companies get them too, in fact that's pretty much why some of the companies even exist these days, they only run the subsidies local routes. If the subsidies go away, either lower use routes need to go away, or fares need to go UP to cover the cost of running those routes. and the fare increase would be across the board, after all, raising fares exponentially on an already low use route isn't gonna increase passenger numbers, is it? I'm not sure there is a solution that'd make everyone happy with the public transport system. People in low use areas need the subsidies to keep their buses running, people who only travel at peak time feel they're being ripped off, people don't like old trains, people complain at the waste of money buying new trains (yes, i'vre heard people complain about the waste of money on my train route, we have the new electric trains here) people complain about the service frequency, wanting more trains... I honestly expect, if the trains were 100% free to use, covered by tax, with comfortable, frequent, clean new trains, people would complain about the colour by Gillian_T (Sat 11th May 2019 8:55am)
  • I have taken a train in all of those countries, except Norway (I plan to) and they have the benefit of not having the track owned by one for profit company, the trains owned by another, the stations owned in some cases by another, and the trains operated by another. That's how they can charge what they charge and have a more reliable service service reliability (other than the staff shortage issue, that's a Scotrail thing) isn't actually down to Scotrail most of the time, points or signal failures aren't in any way the responsibility of Scotrail, that'd be Network Rail. I'm pretty sure, if the fares dropped, many of these routes would suffer greatly, but I'm happy to be proved wrong. And, as for paying 4000+ per year to get to my job, I pay not a huge amount off that, I have done for quite some time, it sucks, but I could save money by moving nearer work... by Gillian_T (Sat 11th May 2019 11:30am)
  • See you had a point, until your last sentence. Unfortunately you negated most if it with two words. We'll done that man! Oh, and start meters are setting up the market for variable tariffs for energy at peak times, a more advanced version of economy 7, which has existed fir a very long time, so poor analogy by Gillian_T (Sat 11th May 2019 12:36pm)

  • Council have told me it's not illegal, and there's nothing they can do about it. It's awesome. She's old, so hopefully she'll croak it in not too distant future by Gillian_T (Mon 20th May 2019 7:48am)
  • back in the late 90s where I live there was a stagecoach / first war. Stagecoach offering returns for 50p and giving out free orange juice and muffins. There's no way they made money on the routes for a long time. by Gillian_T (Fri 31st May 2019 12:09pm)

  • Went on a tour of my old high school last night as it's getting pulled down over the sumer. Was weird being back there, but I did meet the only teacher I liked when I was there, which was quite nice. Jogged a load of memories of the 90s, I have an urge to go buy merrydown now! by Gillian_T (Wed 26th Jun 2019 12:35pm)
  • It was very much a mixed bag, bit crap seeing it in bad condition as they're doing no maintenance on it obviously, and not all of my high school memories are good, but it was definitely worth doing. Shame you missed out on yours, my wife missed out, her school didn't even do an open day/evening thing which was crap. by Gillian_T (Wed 26th Jun 2019 12:47pm)
  • Who pierced you in Nirvana, our of curiosity? Was it John? Like /u/karbon_14 I've been getting pierced by John for about 20 years now, with no issues, but a friend was pierced by someone else in Nirvana and had issues. Obviously everyone's experiences are different, I'm just curious if it was John or someone else in Nirvana. I've heard good things about Lola at Forevermore, as recommended by /u/_glasgowmegasnake_ and /u/still-searching but have no experience with her so can't recommend her personally. by Gillian_T (Mon 1st Jul 2019 3:17pm)
  • :( ripping through sounds PAINFUL! Good luck getting it sorted out. Might venture somewhere different if I get more piercings, but after 20 years, it feels like cheating to go elsewhere. by Gillian_T (Mon 1st Jul 2019 3:39pm)
  • Round where I live we had trolleys in bushes miles from the shop even with the deposits. Neds figured out how to get the coin back out without returning the trolley, so they usually didn't still have cash in by Gillian_T (Sun 14th Jul 2019 8:49pm)
  • Millcroft is getting a LITTLE better. They're pulling the shitey flats at the bottom down and there's a nunch of CCTV gone in which has reduced some of the public fuckwittery. The bit around Glenhove shop is still mental at times, but again, there's CCTV going in. In general, Cumbernauld's a lot safer to walk round than many areas in Glasgow "proper" It's not even as grim and grey anymore, the council and housing association have cleaned up a bunch of the houses. by Gillian_T (Thu 25th Jul 2019 12:51pm)

  • I tend to go by public transport, so drumpellier is a pain for me. One car household and my wife tends to need the car more than my running does. I do plan to pop along soon though, hopefully! by Gillian_T (Tue 27th Aug 2019 8:38pm)
  • I've got a rescue greyhound who is very dog reactive, after mistreatment in his last home. The number of folk who respond "my dogs friendly" when I ask that they give him space does my box in. You dug might be friendly, but mine will try to eat your fluffy little rat, despite being muzzled. It should be obvious by the muzzle that he's not friendly. He's getting better, but I need to get a new trainer, the guy we were using fucked off to France and didn't come back. by Gillian_T (Thu 12th Sep 2019 1:29pm)

  • Round my way they got stickers made, just about anything they can label had a "UB07" sticker or a "Celtic ultras" sticker. Quite often both with a half arsed attempt to scrape whichever was first off. Not even any effort to tag things. Just slap a sticker and walk away. We used to get a lot of "proper" street art in the railway tunnels and some underpasses but that seems to all be replaced with the UB shite too now. by Gillian_T (Wed 9th Oct 2019 2:15pm)

  • couple of years back the central one seems to be cancelled more than the queen street over the winter months. Could have been just temporary issues they've now solved, but as i don't do that commute now, i haven't paid any attention. Queen street has a couple of edinburgh routes, the one via Cumbernauld / falkirk grahamston is slightly slower than the central station train, but could be quieter and uses the new trains. by Gillian_T (Wed 13th Nov 2019 12:40pm)

(mentioned in tom scott's latest video about electronic voting, so i assume he fact checked it, he usually does) having witnessed the boxes at the count, it'd be very hard to change votes (without changing the ballot box, which is also difficult) there are observers from every party there, to keep things open and honest by Gillian_T (Thu 12th Dec 2019 9:12am)
  • Have any of you tried the cambridge diet (aka the 1:1 plan) I've got a chunk of weight I want to kickstart losing, and the next few weeks will be mega stressful for me, so I quite like the idea of "here's what you can eat and when" I'm a bit worried that it's all absolutely howling and I'm going to throw a load of money at buying food and shakes I won't eat any of. Any feedback on it is greatly appreciated! by Gillian_T (Sat 21st Dec 2019 3:03pm)
  • arseholes tend to want to be in a position of authority, so will take any scrap of power over those "beneath" them. not saying everyone in a position of authority is an arsehole, or even all arseholes are in authority, but there's a definite overlap between being a total cunt and being in some form of authority, from security to police in my experience. by Gillian_T (Tue 24th Dec 2019 1:48pm)

  • The best thing to do is just get on with being yourself. One of the wonderful things about Glasgow is, you get all sorts of people here, from the sterotypical "wee Glesga wifey" who has smoked 60 a day since she was 4, and has a voice like a foghorn, to a guy who sorta drums along to techno accompanied by battery powered cats. You'll be many many steps away from being the most unusual person anyone else has seen or met that day, and 99% of the time, people are so engrossed in their own lives to even notice other people anyway. If you want to change your voice (it won't change with hormones, only surgery or speech therapy) there are a lot of resources on /r/transvoice which could be useful to you. I've also heard of people getting good results from using the "Christella VoiceUp" app. And the FANTASTIC bookshop Category Is in Govanhill probably has a book or two that would help, or can point you to other resources by Gillian_T (Mon 13th Jan 2020 10:27am)

  • Allegedly NLC didn't want it, none of the councils that strathclyde regional council was split into did. It needed a massive chunk of investment according to a relative who left NLC council a few years back. I found some on a computer I was fixing in a previous job, spent a coupleof hours in the police station, got interviewed under caution. Apparently they were waiting on their computer forensics guys confirming at least one image was old enough I couldn't have put it on the computer. Would I make the call again? OF COURSE! • That sounds like something I'd be interested in. What's the details of the crowdfunding? by Gillian_T (Mon 15th Jun 2020 1:47pm)
  • since the crowdfunder doesnt look like it'll make the target, is that still enough funding to get things rolling for you guys again? by Gillian_T (Thu 25th Jun 2020 11:55am)
  • I'm a fosterer for a greyhound charity, our foster dogs have a "I need a home" jacket on usually (not this week, too warm for a coat on a dog). It's quite common for rehoming charities that are breed specific to not have a rescue centre and rely on volunteer foster carers to help rehoming dogs. We "failed" and kept one, he's a big lazy soppy lump. by Gillian_T (Fri 26th Jun 2020 6:34pm)
  • If you fancy a greyhound, reach out to greyhound awareness league. Gal.org.uk they've got fosterers all over central belt. They do a monthly (except during covid) meet at Strathclyde park, and frequent other events they often need volunteers for too. If you're fostering you can claim back food costs and all vet bills are covered by the charity. You might have a dog for a week the next one a month. It depends on the dog and if people are interested. by Gillian_T (Fri 26th Jun 2020 9:30pm)
  • Certainly with a GP you've got a reasonable chance of finding a practice who will refuse to issue prescription for required medication if you're trans. I had to switch GP as they wouldn't handle prescriptions or blood tests requested by a consultant. I could understand if I asked them to prescribe, and they didn't have knowledge. But the consultant wrote asking them to arrange blood tests and to write prescription (other conditions I have are handled that way with no issues) and they informed me by recorded delivery mail that they could not and would never prescribe the requested medication. I had to be assigned a new GP and none in my area have space on their lists. by Gillian_T (Fri 26th Jun 2020 9:48pm)
  • really, I've already complained to NHS Lanarkshire. The team who assign GPs were VERY fast in assigning me to another practice when I explained why I needed to move, and my new GP is decent. He said I'm far from the first patient he's had who is trans, so I don't need to explain much to him. It's terrible, but not uncommon for trans people to get substandard, or no care from their GP until they move to another practice. Most GPs are fine, but some seem to just want patients on the books who don't need anything ever, get paid for no work. Certainly not interested in dealing with anything even slightly unusual. by Gillian_T (Fri 26th Jun 2020 11:02pm)
  • sandyford will do it, they need you to go to a counselling thing to make sure it's what you want to do. They won't flat out say no. by Gillian_T (Fri 3rd Jul 2020 5:54pm)
  • If you're not set on an 0141 landline number but want a G postcode, you'll get s decent house in Cumbernauld for that money. The transport links to Glasgow are pretty decent, bus is 20 - 30 minutes depending on where in Cumbernauld to Buchanan bus station. Trains are roughly the same to queen street. You'll get a really nice 3 bed in kildrum or condorrat for under 110 or some of the estates north of the m80 you'll get a 2/3 bed for 130 ish. There's a big Asda, big and small Tesco, Aldi, m&s food, multiple pretty decent gp surgeries and a few decent dentists. Schools are okay, couple of brand new high schools, a project to replace the primary schools with new builds. Cumbernauld has a *lot* of green space, 6 nature reserves, a couple of large parks, a lot of decent walking routes, private and council golf courses. The shopping centre is a bit grim, but has a few not bad shops (the comic / gaming shop is great) by Gillian_T (Sun 5th Jul 2020 12:52am)
  • definitely worse places to live though. by Gillian_T (Sun 5th Jul 2020 10:09am)
  • I got rid of our (mostly moss) lawn last year. It's now mostly veg, with a patch of clover for the bees. Definitely recommend scrapping grass and growing more interesting stuff. Clover is easier than grass to maintain and if you like to move things about periodically the clover adds nitrogen to the soil. by Gillian_T (Fri 10th Jul 2020 10:39am)
  • I'm outside the city, so can't help with a vet recommendation. Congrats on the hound adoption. They're fantastic dogs, we were fostering greyhounds but "failed" and adopted our boy. He frequently has us in stitches with daft things he does, very different to any other dogs I've known in my life. Greyhounds do have terrible tooth problems, the quicker you can get your dog used to getting his teeth brushed, the better. Our one will not tolerate having his mouth touched, so every 9-12 months he goes in for a "dental" where they knock him out and basically do a scale and polish. It's not cheap and not good for the dog, but better than risking losing teeth. There's a greyhound and sighthound group on facebook with a lot of useful info and banter. by Gillian_T (Fri 10th Jul 2020 11:41pm)
  • dentastix are pretty useless. It's definitely possible to get your dog to stand for tooth burshing. Meaty flavoured toothpaste helps, and the brushes you put on your finger are easier to control than the traditional toothbrush shaped things. by Gillian_T (Sat 11th Jul 2020 10:39pm)
  • DC framers in mollinsburn were reasonable when I had a signed drum skin framed about 5 years ago. I don't remember the exact cost but they were cheaper than a couple of other places I called. Just off the M80 at junction 4 by Gillian_T (Wed 22nd Jul 2020 11:57am)
  • Mixed bag. In general every experience I've had with female police officers has been negative but most encounters with male officers has been ok. I kinda got the impression the women needed to appear "big" to their partners so saw an easy target to push around. It always amazed me how I fit the description of someone they're looking for, not many folks look like me. So it's either a case of " let's noise up the tranny" or "let's see what we can charge the pervert with". I'd be very surprised if in my encounters where I'm stopped, cuffed, searched there's even a person they're looking for, nevermind one who looks vaguely like me. Male police officers tend to be more chatty and friendly towards me than the female officers. I do my best to avoid them to the point I'd avoid being a useful witness to anything as I half expect them to at least try to pin whatever it was on me for an easy close. by Gillian_T (Tue 28th Jul 2020 1:26am)
  • it was on the corner where specsavers is now i think. by Gillian_T (Thu 13th Aug 2020 3:39pm)
  • I live in cumbernauld, we've been plagued with them for years. It's currently towards the tail end of the first round of breeding season. Given it's been quite warm recently, they'll probably have a second chick at least round here. Your neighbours are probably feeding them, either deliberately if they're absolute wankers like my next door neighbour, or accidentally by not securing bins. Unless you can get their food sources to go away, once they start nesting in an area they're a permanent fixture. Each gull has a lifespan of 15 years on average, and they'll return to the same nesting spot for years. It used to be legal to remove the nests or eggs to reduce their agression, but all gull species are now protected as endangered birds. I suspect they are endangered in their natural habitat cos they're smart enough to realise they dont need to work for mcdonalds scraps, messy bastards give them the food for free. by Gillian_T (Mon 17th Aug 2020 10:57am)

  • we used 247 blinds a couple of years back for our 11foot wide livingroom window blinds. price was much much less than shades quoted for an identical blind. delivery was about 3 days and it was really easy to fit, the instruction leaflet even had a link to a youtube video with tips by Gillian_T (Thu 10th Sep 2020 1:31pm)
  • I worked there when it was first opened, on the reception desk of the office in the middle. Very little input from management except to berate people when things went wrong. I did get a few nice doors out of it though, contractors fitted the wrong doors in several blocks, and rather than skip them we got the chance to have some of them. by Gillian_T (Fri 2nd Oct 2020 10:53am)

  • Ah, so only certain *people* not *causes of death* warrant any emotional response? by Gillian_T (Sat 31st Oct 2020 2:00pm)
  • Both are tragic. Both leave a kid without a mother. I understand not feeling sympathy for the second person, but the family left behind are not at fault. Both would highly be described as tragic. Both leave a child scarred (the second one possibly moreso than the first as that child likely had a hard life to that point) and both are avoidable situations if support networks are properly funded. by Gillian_T (Sat 31st Oct 2020 2:15pm)
  • following the forth and clyde canal is a reasonable walk. you can go west, towards bowling, clydebank etc, or east towards kirkintilloch, falkirk, etc. theres the option of taking train out and walking back from either direction. by Gillian_T (Sun 1st Nov 2020 12:47am)
  • the nhs budget isn't devolved. How much the NHS in Scotland get comes from WM, How that toal is spent is down to Scotland. If the total given doesn't cover everything that's needed, something obviously needs to get removed or reduced funding. If you've experienced NHS England in the past few years, you'd notice the difference between England and Scotland, with things significantly better (at least in my experience) in the Scottish NHS. It's not perfect, but it's noticably better, and could be better still if the funding was there. by Gillian_T (Mon 9th Nov 2020 9:24am)
  • Raising taxes on people during a pandemic, and just before the biggest upheaval in many people's lifetimes wou;d not go across well. People are worried for their jobs, and worried about rising costs of food and energy. Raising taxes on top of that would be massively unpopular. I'd ordinarily happily pay more taxes if it could be ringfenced for the NHS, emergency services, social care, education rather than being spent on increasing council leader salaries. Right now, I'd much rather not, I'd rather have the money for food and bills. I expect most people are in the same boat in this regard, and I don't know how popular a tax raise would be at any other time, even if it was ringfenced by Gillian_T (Mon 9th Nov 2020 9:27am)
  • So, raise taxes post Brexit when food is expected to increase in price? That's would not go across well with the papers by Gillian_T (Mon 9th Nov 2020 3:37pm)

  • I've been going out of my way to be more polite and friendly to retail staff during this. Seeing them get abuse boils my piss. It's hard to see if someone is smiling or not, so in situations where I'd possibly not say please or thankyou, but just smile I make sure to say please or thankyou. I don't understand why people take frustrations out on the staff who have no power to actualy fix whatever it is that's annoying them. by Gillian_T (Fri 20th Nov 2020 4:57pm)
  • you'd be surprised how often businesses still use cheques. I see a few a year through my work (we do IT support for small businesses and a couple of local charities) I haven't seen a personal cheque in a LONG while, but saw a business cheque on Wednesday. by Gillian_T (Sat 21st Nov 2020 10:59am)
  • these guys will collect from you https://www.facebook.com/www.centralscotlandspetfoodbank.co.uk/ they support a few charities who have animals in foster care rather than in shelters / kennels. As well as supporting people who hit a snag and struggle to feed their pets. I don't think "regular" food banks carry pet food, so it's down to these guys. by Gillian_T (Mon 23rd Nov 2020 11:03am)
  • it was certainly there when i first worked in clydebank in 2001. Worked in Clydesdale bank place out in the business park on the other side of kilbowie road. • Not in Glasgow, but castle comics in Cumbernauld do dnd nights, including the odd beginners night where they run one of the short intro games. 20ish minutes by bus from Buchanan bus station and you're in the shopping centre in Cumbernauld, so it's not too hard to get to if you want to pop through by Gillian_T (Fri 1st Jan 2021 10:26am)
  • 10kg doesn't go very far. I'm in North Lanarkshire, and have bene fighting with the council here since October to get a grit bin in my street filled. They've now confirmed that since nobody is using the grit bin (it's empty, how can anyone use it?) it will be removed as part of budget cuts. If you have a grit bin near you, get the council to fill it, and make use of it, keep them filling it or you may end up in the same situation I'm in. Councils never seem to make sense. by Gillian_T (Tue 5th Jan 2021 1:04pm)
  • Still won't last long. I think I used about three times that over the weekend in a section of my street. by Gillian_T (Tue 5th Jan 2021 2:33pm)
  • Their plan seems to be to not fill the grit bins, then use that to argue nobody uses them so can scrap them. It's ridiculous, but that's council logic. by Gillian_T (Wed 6th Jan 2021 11:08am)
  • Nope, definitely not easy being trans. Lots of issues, but it is improving in some ways, just seems to be stuck or back sliding in others. by Gillian_T (Sat 9th Jan 2021 1:00am)
  • Look up breed specific rescues, most of them are still rehoming as normal, doing home checks virtually or whatever. If you're not experienced with dogs, don't get a beagle as a first dog, they're quite a tough breed to work with from what I've seen (my cousin has two of them) I have had greyhounds for a while now, very laid back dogs, don't need a massive amount of exercise, and tend to not have major health issues (bad teeth is the main one) the local greyhound trust are definitely still rehoming, as are GAL - greyhound awareness league. Best of luck finding a dog, I wouldn't be without a dog now. by Gillian_T (Wed 13th Jan 2021 12:31am)
  • I absolutely love beagles, I've just been spoiled by having laidback greyhounds. If I knew for sure I'd be working from home longer term, and had flexibility to take a dog for longer walks, spend an hour playing with the dog etc I'd probably get a beagle or a german shepherd. It's highly unlikely so I'll stick to the greyhounds. by Gillian_T (Wed 13th Jan 2021 11:32am)
  • Give greyhounds a thought, very easy first dog. They often can't be off leash at all though. Sometimes they need muzzled around smaller dogs, but the rescue charity will tell you that up front. Very laid back, soft natured, easily trained. I am biased but they're great. by Gillian_T (Wed 13th Jan 2021 1:20pm)
  • They're great. Ears like velvet, 40mph couch potatoes, content to walk all day if you want, or lie on the couch for cuddles. Ping a rescue charity on Facebook, you'll probably get to meet a hound. Normally I'd suggest one of the regular charity walks, or events but they're all cancelled for obvious reasons by Gillian_T (Thu 14th Jan 2021 12:40am)
  • Slim chance. It does happen occasionally, there was a car wash dumping waste in residential street near me got fined last year, but it took multiple incidents to happen. I'm in North Lanarkshire though, so may be different by Gillian_T (Thu 21st Jan 2021 1:20pm)

  • That's not true. Certainly the two (seems like one but actually different owners) centres in Cumbernauld are open. They both have essential shops in them though, so it could be they're only allowed to open of they have a food retailer inside or something by Gillian_T (Fri 5th Mar 2021 6:42pm)
  • those centres being open doesn't mean they all are, and given there ARE other centres open, it's untrue. If it's illegal for indoor centres to be open you should probably report the Antonine centre and the "centre" in Cumbernauld to the police for being illegally open. Both those centres have been open throughout due to having essential shops such as pharmacies and food retailers in them. by Gillian_T (Sat 6th Mar 2021 12:00pm)
  • The Savoy centre is closed because management decided to close it, not because of a law like you stated. North Lanarkshire is in tier 4 of Scotland regulations like Glasgow so exactly the same rules apply. Springburn centre is open too btw. I assume that's breaking the law too? by Gillian_T (Sun 7th Mar 2021 12:54pm)
  • When I sold my flat the surveryor did a "driveby" survey. didn't come in, as far as I can ell didn't get out of their car, if they even came round. The surveyor for the house I'm in now definitely came into the house, as my nextdoor neighbour let the guy in, she told us when she let us in a few days before the exchange to confirm a measurement (the sellers knew about it, nextdoor had a key in case of any issues while house was empty) by Gillian_T (Thu 11th Mar 2021 11:40am)

  • the bagels I've tried are OK, they're often somewhat decent, but they miss "something" Supposedly the NY ones are different because of water, but I dunno if that's an urban myth or whatever. I find the texture slightly different, not enough to be a major issue but enough to mean I get a hankering for a "real" one occasionally. I think the analogy of a hovis loaf or fresh baked bread is probably the best way of describing it. nothing wrong with a hovis loaf, makes a good sandwich, but a fresh loaf is a different beast. by Gillian_T (Fri 19th Mar 2021 9:35am)

  • I'd like to see at least one power station retained as a museum with either tours or just free to roam around. Not sure if it'd be possible, I expect there would need to be significant modification of the buildings for accessibility and probably an expensive cleanup as they probably use nasty chemicals in various places around the sites. It wold provide some employment in the areas where the station closing was a huge blow to the local economy. As the original staff retire, having their stories on video or at least audio recordings could allow for the knowledge to remain available as part of the museum long after they leave. by Gillian_T (Mon 29th Mar 2021 11:15am)
  • I had a trip planned last year that the pandemic scuppered to the Zwentendorf nuclear power plant in Austria. I have a bit of a fascination with huge machinery, and they don't get much bigger than a power station. by Gillian_T (Mon 29th Mar 2021 12:54pm)

Basically get you to do a zoom call walking through your whole house and any garden areas to check for suitability. If you think you're cut out for it, please consider fostering a dog. Many. "lockdown puppies" are being surrendered to rescue places as people go back to work. It's better for the dogs to stay in a home environment than kennels. Sorry for your loss, we lost two in 18 months, it never gets easier. We fostered greyhounds for a bit, wasn't ready to own another dog but house felt empty. Adopting another felt wrong for a while for us, obviously everyone is different. If you've got questions about fostering dogs, ask away. by Gillian_T (Tue 11th May 2021 8:41am)
  • Cars used to be a lot smaller. I live in Cumbernauld, the garages here used to be fine for most cars, now only wee cars like a Suzuki swift fit. • What is it you're not enjoying? D&D has a few ways to be GOOD, and many ways it can be BAD. a DM can make or break a game. Equally, the group of players can make of break it in similar ways. Are you doing the starter campaign or something more involved? by Gillian_T (Thu 27th May 2021 12:25pm)

  • sometimes the tangents are great, but when it's constant it can get very frustrating. Equally, being in a group with a "murder hobo" player who wants to kill EVERYTHING, treating it like an FPS rather than an RPG makes the game harder, and less interesting. last game with one of those I was in the DM lumped the murderous eejit with a bugbear shadow that was madly in love with him and went EVERYWHERE with him. Kept him away from the NPCs we needed to advance the story, as they'd flee from the bugbear. The bugbear was also immortal so killing it resulted in it getting back up and following him. by Gillian_T (Thu 27th May 2021 1:09pm)
  • sounds like the group is the problem. Reach out to various gaming stores, see if any of them are running the lost mines of phandelver campaign, the starter set. I know you've been playing for a bit, but having a prerolled character removes some of the bits that can complicate the game, get used to that character and let you concentrate more on the role playing aspect and the story. I know Castle Comics in Cumbernauld has at least one run through of the starter set in the next wee while so I assume others may be doing the same to get folks back through the doors. by Gillian_T (Thu 27th May 2021 1:15pm)

  • as mentioned by /u/jagz86 TCV are always looking for volunteers for mature stuff. They often work alongside the Scottish wildlife Trust, who are always looking for volunteers for stuff. I'm not in Glasgow, I'm in Cumbernauld and both those groups work together to do a lot in several local nature reserves. If you fancy a trip out of the city to Cumbernauld, 20 ish mins by bus from buchanan bus station, there's always something happening with the reserves and they always need more volunteers. I used to go along to their weekly walk thing for mental health, called Wild Ways Well, and sometimes helped out with the nature ninjas stuff, but life got in the way. Definitely worth looking up both https://scottishwildlifetrust.org.uk/ groups and https://www.tcv.org.uk/ groups near you if you want to get involved in stuff. by Gillian_T (Wed 2nd Jun 2021 11:59am)
  • from what i remember, airing it out of order and changing the time and day of airing to mess with viewing figures was quite a common way of handling a program they didn't want to actually air. Seems it happened to a few shows, network takes a show likely to compete with one of theirs to stop another network airing it at the same time as their show, impacting figures. network then messes with the show to make it flop, but keeps the rights to stop it going elsewhere later. by Gillian_T (Tue 22nd Jun 2021 6:30pm)
  • 100% it will. North Lanarkshire did it a couple of years ago and the number of fly tipping SITES around me increased, not just the volume of shite dumped. They started dumping in middle of residential streets (in the middle of the road, stop car, push shite onto road, drive off) it's ridiculous. by Gillian_T (Mon 28th Jun 2021 10:25pm)
  • That's ridiculous! Which departments still won't take transfers? I don't have a cheque book but apparently the bank will send me one if I ask. by Gillian_T (Fri 9th Jul 2021 4:44pm)

  • should be, they give out headsets that talk to the IR senders on the walls, if you look carefully you'll see some faint red glowing things on the walls, they're for the AD headsets. Means people who need the audio descriptions can go to the cinema with friends without them having to hear the descriptions. Enjoy the cinema, hope they have the aircon on! by Gillian_T (Sun 18th Jul 2021 12:50pm)
  • sounds like a great plan to me, there's been a few posts for folk looking to meet new friends. I'm a weirdo, and pretty antisocial so unlikely you'd see me there, but it's a great idea! by Gillian_T (Mon 19th Jul 2021 2:27pm)
  • My wife recently had a round of blood tests, her testosterone is higher than mine. She opens jars and bottles I can't and she's faster than I am when running. About the only benefit I have over her in sport is I'm a better swimmer, but that's due to her not learning until her 20s, whereas I lived 800 yards from a pool and went a lot as a kid. Much of the "oh no testosterone" is bring used to keep black women out of sports, contrast the treatment of caster semenya with Michael Phelps. They both have a different balance of hormones that specifically help them get an edge on others. He's given medals, she's given Medication to negate her body's natural edge. by Gillian_T (Tue 20th Jul 2021 3:28pm)
  • kinda my point. If a woman who is not trans can trigger the arbitrary "too much T" rule, their cutoff is too low. I have lower T than my wife, who isn't trans, I am trans. If the argument is women's sport is under threat by people with high testosterone, I should be more likely to compete over my wife. also, IOC rules have allowed trans athletes since 2003, how many trans women have won medals at olympics since 2003? If we're such a threat to women's sports I assume we're dominating, winning most of the medals in womens events? by Gillian_T (Tue 20th Jul 2021 3:46pm)
  • they're usually pretty good about it. I claimed over a dozen times in 2019, train got cancelled a fair few times, guy in the ticket office had stacks of the forms ready to go. Once they asked for more info, but they seem to just check the info on the service you're claiming for and if it matches what you said they pay out. by Gillian_T (Tue 20th Jul 2021 4:05pm)
  • My wife is menopausal, I recently had an orchiectomy. Doctors aren't concerned with either of our hormone levels. Bit thanks for the concern. by Gillian_T (Tue 20th Jul 2021 10:44pm)

  • I love that building along with Lion chambers on Hope St. The BOAC building is in the wrong place I think, if it had been sited somewhere they were pulling down the other old buildings and putting up newer ones it wouldn't look so out of place. Still a nice building I reckon. by Gillian_T (Fri 23rd Jul 2021 8:19am)
  • Not in Glasgow, but Castle Comics in Cumbernauld has a few retro games in at the moment, some playstation and mega drive games at least when I was in on Friday. They've got a website if you don't fancy a trek out to Cumbernauld (don't blame you) by Gillian_T (Tue 27th Jul 2021 10:08pm)

  • They see flexibility as a plus, but the flexibility only goes one way. They don't see that they need to be flexible for you, only you for them and see that as a great thing. Zero hour contracts have a place, but every job becoming one isn't the place. I worked a zero hour a few years ago to fit round my studying, worked for me as they knew the times I couldn't work and fit round that. Doesn't work for everyone, and the way companies seem to use them now, doesn't work for anyone really. by Gillian_T (Thu 29th Jul 2021 9:30am)
  • if you're happy looking as far out as Kirkintilloch, look at Cumbernauld. most of it is "ok" and the commute time from there is about as long as Kirkintilloch into city centre. The areas worth looking at are: Kildrum, Seafar, Greenfaulds and the newer estates north of the M80. Carbrain is mostly ok, but some streets are a bit wild. If you look at Carbrain, I'd suggest avoiding Millcroft road, Glenhove road and Wallbrae / Sandyknowes road. The other streets are ok, and handy for most amenities. by Gillian_T (Fri 30th Jul 2021 1:02pm)
  • That's mostly the issues here in Cumbernauld tbh. Certin streets seem to have a higher proportion of wee bams and junkies though. Not saying everyone in those streets are bad, far from it, but certainly Millcroft road in Cumbernauld has more than it's fair share of wee arseholes you wouldn't want being your neighbour, and a MASSIVE problem with flytipping. by Gillian_T (Fri 30th Jul 2021 4:02pm)
  • Waiting on the results of a covid test. Got the test yesterday afternoon, binned my planned night out for a meal. I hope it's just a crappy summer cold, I've barely been out, been masked every time I'm out and this is the first I've been ill since starting wearing masks. Kinda tempted to phone one of the drink delivery places and get some cheap crappy whisky for a few hot toddies. by Gillian_T (Sun 1st Aug 2021 11:48am)
  • Negative, thankfully. Hopefully whatever it is will pass soon. If not, there's a 1/4 bottle of bells here for hot toddy. by Gillian_T (Sun 1st Aug 2021 3:17pm)
  • I love China Town restaurant. Haven't been in a while, I should rectify that soon. by Gillian_T (Mon 2nd Aug 2021 10:50am)
  • I'm slowly ripping the garden here to bits and starting again, it had a massive lawn which was mostly moss due to poor drainage and nothing much else (two dead trees and a gigantic Hydrangea) All I have planted at the moment other than some wildflowers is Rhubarb. I was given a chunk by a neighbour so planted it, I've had 3 kilos off it this year, won't be harvesting any more from it now, letting it feed the crown for next year. I have plans to grow peas, carrots, brussels sprouts and potatoes next year, and to replace the lawn area with a clover / wildflower meadow type area to feed the bees. Not really into having a manicured flower garden, I'd rather have fresh veg. by Gillian_T (Mon 2nd Aug 2021 2:14pm)

  • turn your music up as after al "it's not illegal until 11pm" pop tunes on LOUD and fuck off out until as near to 11pm as possible. any time you're out, tunes on! you're only there another week so nothing to lose by Gillian_T (Tue 17th Aug 2021 12:14pm)
  • try moving some of the timer sections outwards to "on" I can see it's supposed to be set to "on" all the time based on the control, but my old boiler was wonky on that setting, only came on via the timer, so that's worth giving it a try. You mention a "new" thermostat but hte thermostat picture looks pretty sun faded, is there a wireless thermostat / timer? by Gillian_T (Tue 17th Aug 2021 12:45pm)
  • What about them? If they're ok with the current noise level what difference does it make? If they're not, maybe making the wee fucker learn he has neighbours will improve matters for them. by Gillian_T (Tue 17th Aug 2021 1:34pm)
  • True, but it's also very temporary as op is leaving. by Gillian_T (Tue 17th Aug 2021 4:23pm)
  • I used to know someone who ran a pirate station from one of the tower blocks in Cumbernauld. Can't for the life of me remember what the station was called though. I didn't really listen to much in the way of pirate radio stuff, I was way nerdier than that, I used to try to pick up foreign shortwave stations. by Gillian_T (Wed 18th Aug 2021 9:36am)
  • I got a test last night, the guy at the end reckoned at least 48 hours recently as they've been very busy for the past week or so. Hope your test is negative. by Gillian_T (Sat 4th Sep 2021 6:01pm)
  • Just had my result, 25 and a half hours after my test. I dunno if they release the results in batches or whatever but hopefully yours isn't far behind if you haven't had yours. (mine was negative btw) by Gillian_T (Sat 4th Sep 2021 8:24pm)
  • you said you're not exactly in Glasgow. If you happen to be near Cumbernauld, pop into Castle comics in the shopping centre. they have groups for all sorts of nerdy thing from magic the gathering and D&D to just "random board games" there's a wide mix of demographics of the group membership, not just "fat neckbeards" The two guys who run the shop at the moment, Greg and Garry are both sound as. Honestly, the shop is a wee gem. Other than that, try the various meetup.com groups and of course the glasgow subreddit meetup this week (or next time it happens if the location is crap for you this time) by Gillian_T (Wed 8th Sep 2021 3:07pm)
  • It's even worse once you're outside the SPT region, from what I remember. by Gillian_T (Thu 9th Sep 2021 8:44am)
  • Currently arguing with a recruiter about my legal ability to do a job. They won't accept my passport as proof of right to work in the UK, they want a biometric residency thing. Can't get them to understand that just because they have a biometric card, doesn't mean I do. I guess I'm gonna walk away from this gig as they obviously want someone with different immigration status to me (I assume because they plan on screwing them over tbh) by Gillian_T (Thu 9th Sep 2021 10:12am)
  • Yeah, I'm a British citizen. I've just blocked the idiot recruiter and walked away from that job opportunity. But, if anyone fancies a laptop deployment gig in Edinburgh and wants the recruiter's details (you'll probably need a biometric residency permit, they don't accept a passport as proof of eligibility to work in the UK for some reason) drop me a DM and i'll pass the details on. by Gillian_T (Thu 9th Sep 2021 11:34am)
  • TBH, I didn't fancy the commute to Edinburgh for slightly more money than I'm on (I'd end up under a tenner a week better off for a much longer commute after travel costs) so I'm not too fussed I think they're used to dealing with people who have the BRP, and the person I was dealing with had no clue that British citizens don't have them, only people who have moved here. I wasn't being discriminated against, just banging my head against a wall trying to get them to understand "I can't physically get the thing you want, the thing I've given you will work fine for proof of right to work here" after about 5 hours of back and forth emails and short phone calls I just gave up. by Gillian_T (Thu 9th Sep 2021 3:07pm)
  • It's not possible for someone born in the UK to get a BRP, which was the point I tried to get across to them. There was a bit of a language barrier which hindered things on calls so I resorted to emails figuring maybe written communication was easier than the typical west of Scotland FAST speech. I gave up, figuring if the recruiter doesn't know what the legal requirements are for the job, there would 100% be something else that's a nightmare to deal with. by Gillian_T (Thu 9th Sep 2021 3:26pm)
  • Round where I am the majority of the hassle is from the younger ones, who are either tagging UB or UC or slapping stickers everywhere they go as well as fighting anything that moves. The older ones seem to sit at home drinking and swearing along with their tunes. I don't see it dying out with the older generations, if anything the younger ones want to push it to greater levels of aggression and violence. Hopefully I'm wrong by Gillian_T (Sat 18th Sep 2021 11:35am)
  • Ah yes, because my comments was only stickers... by Gillian_T (Sat 18th Sep 2021 1:48pm)
