  • Blimey, that's grim. And she survived too, by the looks of it? by StonedPhysicist (Wed 16th Jan 2019 5:36pm)
  • Roots & Fruits on GWR has vegan salami, I believe. The Sainsburys on Crow Road had Quorn salami slices in last time I was in there (granted a few months back). by StonedPhysicist (Fri 18th Jan 2019 3:55pm)
  • 13th Note. by StonedPhysicist (Sat 19th Jan 2019 11:24am)
  • Shame, but not entirely surprising. Odds on luxury student accommodation springing up there? by StonedPhysicist (Wed 6th Feb 2019 10:36am)
  • Christ, that's weird. Was only talking about these at the weekend with a pal, saying I'd not seen them in a couple of years. Glad to know he's still doing his mad wee thing! by StonedPhysicist (Mon 11th Feb 2019 11:48pm)
  • Just got back from it, took some time off to attend. It was a very weird feeling being older than most of the attendees! Fantastic vibe, good on them all! by StonedPhysicist (Fri 15th Feb 2019 1:10pm)

  • It'd be a disgrace if they didn't retain the façade, but I fully expect another bloody cube of soulless student flats up by next September. by StonedPhysicist (Fri 8th Mar 2019 3:26pm)
  • Aye, took a half day at work so I can go along. Be a bit weird not being on the younger end of the folk at a demo, but hey. Gotta support yous! by StonedPhysicist (Fri 15th Mar 2019 10:44am)
  • "Capitalism vs Planet Earth" was the Green Party's one. The table you're thinking of was Socialist Party Scotland, who are quite a tiny party all things considered, but they do have a youth wing (as do most parties). Given the impact on the planet is primarily coming from \~100 major multinational companies who have put profits above environmental sustainability, I'm afraid climate change is inherently a political matter. It's a shame it so often falls to us as socialists to do anything about it, but we do what we can. by StonedPhysicist (Fri 15th Mar 2019 2:21pm)
  • Mm, I'm a Green but broadly support keeping nuclear power above other non-renewables whilst we have to. Given Scotland has incredible potential to be eventually completely renewable without the need for nuclear power, that's definitely the goal to which we aspire, but there are quite a broad range of views amongst members. by StonedPhysicist (Fri 15th Mar 2019 3:06pm)
  • Off work today! Might go see the coos in Pollok Park, or take a wander round the GOMA. Anyone got any suggestions for some interesting arty stuff on today? by StonedPhysicist (Thu 11th Apr 2019 10:27am)
  • Forgot to catch up on this - went along as suggested, cheers mate. Was good to catch the Gorbals exhibition too! by StonedPhysicist (Tue 16th Apr 2019 8:14am)
  • Was it When The Clyde Ran Red? Finished that recently, it was really gripping! by StonedPhysicist (Thu 18th Apr 2019 8:54pm)
  • For anyone interested, the local trades union council have organised the annual May Day march and rally in George Square commemorating the centenary of the battle. 11am, Sunday 5th May, bring a pal (and a red flag if you've got one!) by StonedPhysicist (Thu 18th Apr 2019 8:54pm)
  • Good. They knew exactly what they wanted, next time the route can be redirected straight into the Clyde. by StonedPhysicist (Thu 18th Apr 2019 11:23pm)
  • Wish I'd known about it sooner. Fantastic wee area, with one of the best libraries in the city! by StonedPhysicist (Fri 19th Apr 2019 11:17am)
  • It's the start of exam time so of course all the undergrads are piled into the library when they're not usually throughout the rest of the year. The new building won't be ready for another year, but it will have additional study spaces. In the meantime, take some headphones and go to a public library, plenty of spaces in there and many of them are open late a couple of evenings a week. by StonedPhysicist (Mon 22nd Apr 2019 5:11pm)
  • Supposed to be, aye. I'll believe it when I see it, though. by StonedPhysicist (Mon 22nd Apr 2019 9:31pm)
  • \*trade union hat on\* One of the main things that we need to do in tackling climate change is look at emissions and sustainability. This has impacts on jobs and workers who are employed by companies that produce large amounts of waste, and there is the risk that by taking action it could put jobs at risk, potentially impacting on poorer communities harder or on those who own small businesses (corner shops, cafes, etc) around these workplaces. So if that sort of thing might affect you or people you know, there's a distinct human rights/equality issue there, and you suggest that the council and parliaments work directly with trade unions and community groups to plan for any way of mitigating this damage and have a proper just transition of these industries. by StonedPhysicist (Fri 26th Apr 2019 2:14pm)
  • So one of the ways I've been advising people to fill this in is to highlight ways that climate change or policies to help mitigate the impact may affect groups that the council may not have thought of. What will be the impact on you as a parent of a young child, as a Universal Credit claimant, as a disabled person, as someone with family abroad, as a teacher, as a scientist, anything like that? If one of the suggestions is that we massively reduce car use, and you find public transport lacking or too expensive in your area, then suggest that investment into more bus routes and electric buses would be helpful for you. If one of the suggestions is that we drastically cut meat eating, and your child has a medical condition that means they struggle with iron or B12 absorption, then suggest that public procurement of school meal suppliers should ensure all meat-free options have a high baseline of nutrition, and that stocks of injectable B12 should be made more widely available at NHS or private pharmacies. That sort of thing. by StonedPhysicist (Fri 26th Apr 2019 2:11pm)
  • Not much new here, mostly the same old suggestions, but worth a gander I guess. by StonedPhysicist (Mon 29th Apr 2019 1:33am)
  • Yeah, if you're on the Queens Park side you at least get two Neilston trains and one Newton train per hour on a Sunday. If you're on the Maxwell Park side, you just get one Newton train per hour. Not ideal, really. by StonedPhysicist (Mon 29th Apr 2019 12:28pm)
  • Paesano, never had a bad one there. by StonedPhysicist (Mon 13th May 2019 12:15am)

  • According to their website, aye. by StonedPhysicist (Fri 24th May 2019 1:50pm)
  • Depends what you want to get out of it. CompSci as a degree by itself isn't going to get you a job in that field - they'll be more interested in your contributions to open source software, projects you've done, etc. That said, I've done uni twice (once on campus once distance-based) and loved it not so much for the specific contents of the courses but for the way it made me think, the skills it taught me in logic and critical thinking, and obviously the pals I made and experiences I had - those were the things that got me into my job more than the degree itself. So if you want to get those skills above and beyond what you'd learn just by reading up on shit online, absolutely uni's worth it, just don't expect simply holding the piece of paper to get you the job by itself. Obviously it's also possible to do with a part-time job. Having done full-time uni with part-time work, and full-time work with part-time uni, just be prepared to be exhausted and balance your time - though that said it's also good evidence of time-management for when you go for a job after graduation if you can show you've pulled both off. by StonedPhysicist (Sat 25th May 2019 8:46pm)
  • I mean, to be fair, it hasn't had its customary Mysterious Fire™ yet, so no point speculating until then. by StonedPhysicist (Tue 28th May 2019 4:55pm)

  • Fucking hell that's atrocious. by StonedPhysicist (Thu 30th May 2019 3:51pm)
  • Absolutely. The issue SPT have isn't so much cashflow as space - if they sell the buses and the depot, we can have a publicly-owned bus network in Glasgow again. And honestly, if Edinburgh can do it, why not us? by StonedPhysicist (Fri 31st May 2019 1:24pm)
  • Good to know. Best start lobbying on this, cheers. by StonedPhysicist (Sat 1st Jun 2019 1:48pm)
  • Aye, £4 a can? Just pour some sugar into a can of Xtra if you're that desperate for all the difference it'd make. by StonedPhysicist (Mon 3rd Jun 2019 1:24pm)
  • >There's no equivalent to a proper multi-modal (bus/train/subway) all day or single ticket as is common in most continental European cities, especially in cities of a comparable size to Glasgo True, though there is the ZoneCard which does all of those for 1/4/10 weeks. Not that that's not problematic since it only works Sunday-Saturday, but. by StonedPhysicist (Tue 4th Jun 2019 8:26pm)
  • True. Though when I was in London last year it was cheapest to just use my debit card everywhere. Bring on the end of deregulation and the full nationalisation of bus transport. by StonedPhysicist (Tue 4th Jun 2019 9:43pm)

  • Interesting that this article comes out right as work begins in Tradeston to start transforming it into a financial district. Interesting also that it features a quote from the concerned owner of the Cathouse and Garage, where of course there are no drugs anywhere, who couldn't possibly be worried about people taking untaxed drugs rather than putting money in his coffers. by StonedPhysicist (Sun 23rd Jun 2019 4:14pm)
  • They've been aware of these venues for ages. Provided alcohol isn't being sold without a license, fire safety rules are followed, and there are no noise complaints, they tend to turn a blind eye. by StonedPhysicist (Sun 23rd Jun 2019 7:46pm)
  • Audio is hardly tiny - capacity is about 150, which is still 150 too many to be seeing bloody Combichrist. by StonedPhysicist (Fri 28th Jun 2019 9:21am)
  • Top bloke. He came along to burn the eviction notices outside the Home Office in Cessnock last time. Been a proud Living Rent member for years, glad to see the union going from strength to strength against these evictions. by StonedPhysicist (Fri 28th Jun 2019 7:35pm)

  • >But this group come from a place of middle class privilege where for me I see that they are rerouting the anger towards the state about climate change. For me the focus of anger should be about fighting poverty. I do understand your position. However, there is nothing inherently wrong with someone in a position of privilege using that in an appropriate manner to further a cause. If they can afford to protest and lose a day's wage or can bring extra resources to a grassroots movement, provided it's not done in a paternalistic manner then there's no problem. I took holiday and overtime to boost their numbers on the school strikes fit for a few hours, because it was something that I was in a position to do, though I'm aware others in my workplace couldn't. Climate injustice will cause even more poverty with the global working class disproportionately affected, so the more allies working against it now, the better we'll all be. by StonedPhysicist (Mon 15th Jul 2019 3:03pm)
  • That's... not a self own? The emissions nearly halved, as the poster you replied to was stating, improving the air quality. by StonedPhysicist (Mon 15th Jul 2019 4:09pm)

  • Fair. Danse Macabre's on next week, so no excuses for not gothing to the hilt then! by StonedPhysicist (Wed 14th Aug 2019 9:05pm)
  • Solidarity from Unite and the IWW. I've got a really busy day on Friday but I'll try and make it along on my lunch break for half an hour or so, and let the union members at work know this is on - at least some of their kids might be able to attend. by StonedPhysicist (Mon 19th Aug 2019 7:20pm)

  • Most Middle Eastern folk are concentrated around the Victoria Road and Pollokshaws Road area, so depending on the particular cuisine you're after, some decent food there. Shoutouts also to Falafel To Go on Hope Street if you just need some quickly. If you're not after meat, 13th Note and the 78 will get you fed. Best pubs for beer are Three Judges, Bon Accord, Inn Deep, Blackfriars, for whisky just go to the Lismore. by StonedPhysicist (Wed 4th Sep 2019 11:50am)
  • Kurdistan Shwarma just off Vicky Road also does decent falafel wraps for £3. I'll need to head down and try their competitors' efforts! by StonedPhysicist (Wed 4th Sep 2019 2:17pm)
  • Stereo have, or at least until recently had, a couple of trans staff. There'll be no problems there, and if there were management would sort them out in no time. by StonedPhysicist (Sat 7th Sep 2019 3:27pm)
  • Urban Glasgow and Lost Glasgow as well. by StonedPhysicist (Wed 11th Sep 2019 10:37am)
  • Yep. If you get a two zone (G1/G2) card that covers you for a huge amount of the city on buses and trains plus the Subway. I pay £173 for ten weeks. If you buy three G zones, they give you all eight for the same price. Only thing to be aware of is they run from Sunday to Saturday whenever you buy them, so buy it on the Sunday (you need a passport photo) and expect the queues at the Subway to validate that component to be a bit longer on Mondays. by StonedPhysicist (Tue 1st Oct 2019 10:22am)
  • I believe you can buy it online and the replacement is posted to you, but since I live a stone's throw away from a station I've never bothered. by StonedPhysicist (Tue 1st Oct 2019 2:46pm)
  • Aye, it'll likely end up being in Audio or the Classic Grand. by StonedPhysicist (Mon 28th Oct 2019 7:44pm)
  • Depends where in Shawlands you are. There are a number of train stations scattered about, and a ton of buses that go down Pollokshaws Road. If you might use a variety of them, you could do worse than getting a ZoneCard, which gives you free unlimited travel within the zones you buy on any service (except the airport bus which is a fiver and night buses which are £3). I have a two-zone one which costs me £173 every 10 weeks. by StonedPhysicist (Fri 1st Nov 2019 11:38am)
  • They do 1, 4, and 10 week ones (and a year-long one), so if you have to travel every day on a given week it might be helpful. I just like knowing that wherever I'm off to in the evenings or weekends I can just get on the nearest travel option without hassle. Also, welcome to Scotland and Glasgow! South Side is best side. by StonedPhysicist (Fri 1st Nov 2019 1:29pm)
  • So, from reading through this a heat sensor got tripped in a fire-related performance which had a series of risk assessments done, and the fire service permitted everyone back into the building where everyone continued partying, implying all evacuation procedures were fine, *back in summer* and they're bringing it up now? Also. forgive me if I'm not overly sympathetic to the press' attempts at constantly bringing up whether the performer was clothed or not or arguing matters of taste at a queer clubnight following the snitches at the Sunday Mail causing underground queer parties to be shut down, complete with quotes from the owner of the Garage and Cathouse (not credited as such of course) wringing his hands as a member of the licensing board. by StonedPhysicist (Tue 12th Nov 2019 7:02pm)
  • Ugh, one of my councillors. Just a few short years until we can vote her out, can't wait. The other SNP one is decent, at least. by StonedPhysicist (Tue 12th Nov 2019 11:52pm)

  • In his defense, he's been incredibly supportive to the staff trade unions throughout a number of disputes and restructurings that would have had a profoundly negative effect on service provision towards students, though I can entirely see why students haven't heard much about that. by StonedPhysicist (Sat 7th Dec 2019 2:52pm)

  • Yup, specifically [Robroyston station](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Robroyston_railway_station), the sixtieth in-use station in Glasgow. by StonedPhysicist (Tue 7th Jan 2020 12:20am)
  • Firstly, hands off the Circle, we just got a whole bunch of 380s and 385s after FINALLY ditching the 314s. Secondly, though it's probably one of the easier ones to convert, it's really hard to see marked improvements of converting the whole Cathcart/Neilston/Newton lines, particularly when it's still used as a diversionary route for the WCML. A six-car 385 is way more useful for the huge peak traffic than trams. A metro that could link places along the Clyde and maybe breathe a bit of life into our neglected river would be a wiser investment. by StonedPhysicist (Tue 7th Jan 2020 12:28am)

  • Like, I'm with you on this. I want to see it abolished and a proper progressive tax put in place, but honestly with the amount of cuts that local authorities are having to do, it's pretty necessary now. Until we can get other tax raising powers and Holyrood can institute a proper LVT, we need to pay our way or lose public assets. And they can pry my local library from my cold dead hands, that place is a fucking godsend. by StonedPhysicist (Thu 20th Feb 2020 7:02pm)

  • The tenements that are still there are the ones that (for the most part) have been taken care of. The shit ones have mostly been pulled down or fell of their own accord. Honestly, having lived in tenements all bar one of the past twelve years I've been in Glasgow, it would be a hard ask to get me to move to a new build. Low ceilings, paper-thin walls, and build quality that won't last more than a couple of decades without major issues... nah. Different strokes, though. by StonedPhysicist (Wed 4th Mar 2020 3:52pm)

  • It's coming to the end of its season now, but the area between the bridge over the Cart by Cathcart Cemetery, and the Snuff Mill Bridge is where you'll find most of it. It grows from late Feb / early March. Don't pick too much from the same area, don't pick up roots either. Just grab leaves (particularly from areas less likely to have dog piss on them), wash them thoroughly before use, and stick them in whatever you're making quite near the end. Kind of treat them like you would chives. by StonedPhysicist (Thu 7th May 2020 10:01pm)
  • I've never picked it from the Kelvin, only the Cart at a few places. I'd expect it to be around for a few more weeks as it should be flowering by now, but they could well have sprayed something around there? Not sure! In terms of other things, I don't know much about foraging beyond the basics... lime (linden) trees are all out now - their leaves are edible when young. Hawthorn too. Nettles are in season, I did a good nettle and okra curry recently. Elderflowers should be coming out any day now, and Darwin's barberry can be found in some places with a bright orange flower - in a couple of months they'll grow blue berries which are pretty acidic and sweet. I'm by no means an expert though, there are a few foraging groups and tutors in the city who will know a lot more than me! by StonedPhysicist (Fri 8th May 2020 12:09am)

  • They even do battered tofu now. Fucking love them. Even when I used to stay in Partick we'd get two trains just to get a Hooked after a few pints. by StonedPhysicist (Thu 14th May 2020 11:15am)
  • Aye, glad it wasn't just me. Presumably a football thing? by StonedPhysicist (Mon 18th May 2020 2:01pm)
  • There's a woman I sometimes used to see on the N6 about 3am who stays in Govanhill. She gets on the bus *absolutely* steaming even by Saturday night standards and does this regal wave as if she's the Queen to folk going by or queuing outside. Her getup is usually very faux-posh and doesn't leave an awful lot to the imagination, which I get, it's a weekend, but I mind the last few times I saw her she'd take out some perfume and spray it everywhere all over her. Including right up her miniskirt. Not subtle in the slightest. It was... definitely a sight. I hope she's doing alright. by StonedPhysicist (Thu 21st May 2020 7:51pm)
  • The cygnets have hatched in Queens Park as well! by StonedPhysicist (Mon 25th May 2020 11:15am)
  • Yeah, same. Difficult part was trying to avoid the big groups that had formed around us. I'd imagine the novelty will start to wear off by Monday but that does mean I expect a rise in cases in a fortnight. by StonedPhysicist (Sun 31st May 2020 1:13pm)
  • For those who don't get the context, there's a famous labour song called"I Dreamed I Saw Joe Hill Last Night", about the legendary IWW union organizer who was framed for murder and killed by police because of his union activities. There is a [fantastic video](https://youtu.be/B0bezsMVU7c) of Paul Robeson (a black American singer, film star, and communist) singing it to Scottish mine workers in 1949 organised by the NUM. There are a fairly large number of modern day IWW members in the Queens Park area. by StonedPhysicist (Tue 2nd Jun 2020 10:23am)
  • Oh neat! I'd seen a picture of him on a May Day march on Victoria Road but never actually clocked that he might have performed there. Thanks! by StonedPhysicist (Tue 2nd Jun 2020 10:32am)
  • Not me sadly, I've never been good at visual art. Though with the IWW connection I've got a hunch it's a pal of mine! by StonedPhysicist (Tue 2nd Jun 2020 10:48am)
  • Not directly. As I said, Joe Hill was put to death by police unjustly, and a song commemorates him. They're using that as an analogy for George Floyd, and given the links between Hill, the IWW past and present, the various ethnic communities in Govanhill, and Robeson's performances, I'm just adding context as a lot of earlier comments didn't seem to get it. by StonedPhysicist (Tue 2nd Jun 2020 11:00am)

  • Mm. I do actually agree with these signs, or at least the principle of them. Explanations of who the slave owners were, but keeping the names so we aren't whitewashing our history. Perhaps better options than the ones they made, but the point is there, right enough. by StonedPhysicist (Fri 5th Jun 2020 11:04pm)

  • Would certainly make parts of town a lot nicer to go into. I admit I was wrong about the redeveloment on Sauchiehall Street - it's not the best it could be but it's miles ahead of what was there before. by StonedPhysicist (Wed 8th Jul 2020 2:27pm)

  • Eventually I'll have to go back in to do repairs and safety stuff, but when I'm not doing physical work, the remaining time could easily be done from home. I've told my boss that even when it's all over I still have no intention of coming in five days a week unless there's specific tasks that require me on site. I would probably still go in one or two days a week just to get a change of scenery, though. Living alone, these four walls have been a bit brutal. by StonedPhysicist (Wed 15th Jul 2020 10:00am)
  • Could we do a whip around to raise cash for them to get a non terrible cam? Looks like they're still using one from 2004. by StonedPhysicist (Wed 15th Jul 2020 10:48am)

  • I'm still not convinced the gold panelling will hold up in years to come, and wish they'd really emphasised the train shed, but it IS better than what was there before. Even if I think big glass boxes are generally pap and architects could do so much better at mixing their designs in with buildings that exist around their sites. by StonedPhysicist (Sat 19th Sep 2020 11:07pm)
  • You know, I slagged off the Sauchiehall Street designs when I first saw them, but fair play, it is a million times nicer now. If only cunts would stop walking in the cycle lane. I don't even cycle and it pisses me off. by StonedPhysicist (Sat 19th Sep 2020 11:06pm)

  • Kurdish Street Food is great, but Kurdistan Shawarma does identical falafel wraps for £3 instead of £4. Plus the soup's not half bad. by StonedPhysicist (Tue 29th Sep 2020 10:28pm)
  • Aye, you'd be paying £8 for the same thing in the West End right enough. Used to go to a counsellor not too far from Kurdistan Shawarma and I'd often nip there for a wrap and soup afterwards as a treat after bearing my soul for an hour. The amount of times they'd not bother charging me for the bowl of soup/beans or I'd be the only non-Kurdish person sitting in. Haven't been for months but the craving never goes away! by StonedPhysicist (Tue 29th Sep 2020 10:39pm)
  • You'll fit right in in Govanhill. I don't live there, I'm further south, but loads of pals stay there, and though it's not without its problems it's grand overall. Plenty of artists, plenty of activists (fair IWW contingent). Obviously a lot of the stuff going on in some of the smaller scenes isn't happening just now due to COVID, but in normal times there's no end of things to do. by StonedPhysicist (Tue 29th Sep 2020 10:36pm)
  • Finally, a different angle! Great shot, worthy of a postcard. by StonedPhysicist (Sat 3rd Oct 2020 4:49pm)
  • I love my beer and miss my local. But honestly you'd think it was Prohibition. You can't go to the pub for a fortnight, calm the fuck down. by StonedPhysicist (Fri 9th Oct 2020 8:27pm)
  • I'd love to see it as Glasgow Crossrail, particularly if they can do an interchange at West Street with the Subway. The main issue I've heard with it is that it would ideally need to be four tracks rather than just the two to resolve the capacity issues. But if it's a choice between a subpar transport connection that doesn't need any more permanent way installing and total removal, I'd go for it. by StonedPhysicist (Fri 16th Oct 2020 12:28pm)

  • Got a few friends of mine their illegal fees refunded, helped out with some of the resistance to Serco's attacks on migrants in their properties, they were also the ones responsible for the campaign which strengthened tenants rights from a few years back. Never needed them myself but I've been a member from the start. by StonedPhysicist (Wed 21st Oct 2020 5:25pm)
  • Funny how quickly the threat of a picket line and legal challenge get these places to back down. :) I've left out my Living Rent poster and my Shelter Scotland collection tins during inspections just to hammer the point home. My rent hasn't gone up. Really sorry to hear how you've been treated, as I say, they're parasites. by StonedPhysicist (Wed 21st Oct 2020 5:52pm)
  • Best chip shop in the city. Used to get battered halloumi there, even when I stayed in Partick I'd make the trip south just for that. by StonedPhysicist (Thu 19th Nov 2020 10:04am)
  • Think Jaw brew at Hillington, I was the first person to try the Wave when they put a test keg of it out at Paisley Beer Festival - a honeyed wheat beer. Strongly recommend! by StonedPhysicist (Sat 21st Nov 2020 3:57pm)
  • Ah, have they moved the brewery as well? Fantastic. Never been to Milngavie but when they're open and it's safe, I'll need to get a train up and pay my respects with a pint or five! by StonedPhysicist (Sat 21st Nov 2020 4:08pm)

  • Kurdistan Shawarma just down the road from them also does almost identical food, albeit a quid cheaper. Used to go in there for a falafel wrap and a bowl of soup after a bad day for about £3.50, did wonders for the spirit! Neither deliver, as far as I know, and are cash only, which is a bit iffy just now. by StonedPhysicist (Mon 4th Jan 2021 12:02am)

  • Nice enough. At least you're close enough to Govanhill that all the good stuff's only a 20 minute walk away (or 2 stops on the train). They're hoping to do some roadworks to renovate the wee grass triangle on Cathcart Road and pedestrianise the bit behind it which should make the place nicer. Hooked is the best damn chippy in the city, though, so it's worth moving for that alone. by StonedPhysicist (Wed 17th Feb 2021 12:13pm)
  • Some bits of Govanhill aren't great. On the other hand, most of my queer pals either stay there or have at some point. It's definitely got a lot going on, and a good local LGBT+ community. If you can afford Battlefield or Shawlands, you'll be close enough. Lived in Battlefield for about 4 years and it was definitely the best place I've been. by StonedPhysicist (Fri 19th Feb 2021 9:21am)

Oaka near Strathclyde Uni / George Square probably would be a good shout (get some of the green chilli sriracha while you're there!) Roots & Fruits do a locally-made one which is kind of pricey (as many of their things are) but is really nice as a rare treat. by StonedPhysicist (Mon 22nd Mar 2021 7:59pm)
  • >House prices are rising significantly in the area and I'd expect them to rise even more as the area begins to further gentrify. It's definitely top of the list of places I've lived in Glasgow. • Pedant hat on - Merkland Street and Partick are separate stations, though not far from one another. When you leave Partick going towards Govan you pass through the old Merkland Street chamber - it's slightly visible from the windows, and often makes your ears pop with the pressure change! by StonedPhysicist (Fri 2nd Apr 2021 12:10am)

  • Not in Cathcart, but when I stayed in Battlefield, Alishan was the best Indian, and in Mount Florida you want Hooked as the chippy of champions. Cafe/lunch, Koo-ee near the station was great. Not so sure on the pubs but Clockwork has just reopened and that used to be decent. by StonedPhysicist (Wed 12th May 2021 1:08pm)

  • Nail on the head. The major issue is the sheer fucking mess they feel they're allowed to just make everywhere because someone kicked a ball better than someone else. The city's like an overflowing bin at the best of times, and it's these entitled cunts that make it worse. Smashing up whatever they can, pissing all over the place, and throwing their empties all over the place. No fucking excuse for it. by StonedPhysicist (Sat 15th May 2021 7:38pm)

Even now I still try and make it to AGMs as a life member but the uni really need to step in and help the way they did the GUU. Their getting rid of most of their staff instead of furloughing them and dragging their heels on recognising a trade union was frankly indefensible. by StonedPhysicist (Thu 20th May 2021 8:56am)

  • Oh jeez. I was passing there the other week on my way to Kenmure Street and went past the shells of the other houses that have been burned down. Does worry me as someone in a tenement where the wiring could be charitably described as "existent", having not been updated in decades. by StonedPhysicist (Tue 1st Jun 2021 8:51pm)
  • Forgot they existed! I remember their owner being super friendly when I went up there a while back. Should really take a wander back some point. by StonedPhysicist (Fri 4th Jun 2021 9:21am)
  • Yeah, very happy to keep my masks, I've got some nice ones now that I wouldn't want to just throw away! Plus during winter they kept my face warm, which it welcome when it's lashing it down and the wind's going straight through your bones. by StonedPhysicist (Fri 4th Jun 2021 12:01pm)

  • Tbf if they actually get segregated cycle lanes on Battlefield Road and Glebe Road, I might actually get a bike. Only thing putting me off learning is the way cunts in this city drive. by StonedPhysicist (Sat 5th Jun 2021 7:33pm)
  • I think you are a little, tbh. The folk I know who are involved seem pretty sound. And I mean, white or not, they're predominantly Jewish and all pro-Palestine. Plus throughout the first lockdown they were doing home deliveries of free food to folk in the community, have been getting locals to work on the construction, and are trying to run things on a pay-what-you-can model so they're sticking true enough to anarchist politics of mutual aid. Like, they know they've a market in left-wing and Jewish groups, and they're in the part of town with a high density of both, so they'll do fine, and those that don't like that sort of thing can just go to literally any other place on Vicky Road? by StonedPhysicist (Fri 11th Jun 2021 5:23pm)

  • Sadly the Classic stopped playing punk and metal years ago. Used to be there most Fridays - didn't care much for the music but the crowd were lovely. by StonedPhysicist (Wed 7th Jul 2021 8:53pm)
  • [Danse Macabre](https://danse-macabre.co.uk/) at Broadcast, goth, post-punk, and italo-disco! Usually third Saturday of the month, free in, full of lovely people, vehemently anti-Morrissey. Other than that, Stigmata and Asylum play a bit more EBM-industrial with their goth, also on Saturdays. Null/Void at Sleazys is probably your best bet for more industrial techno, might get the odd trip hop beats thrown in there too! by StonedPhysicist (Wed 7th Jul 2021 9:18pm)
  • Aye, all my pals were top floor crew, but I'd usually nip down to the punk floor for a bit more light-hearted stuff. It's all "I Am A Raver" and happy hardcore stuff these days since the bloke who owns The Shed took over. The former owner opened Cult on Sauchiehall Street but the punters sadly didn't follow in big enough numbers to make it viable, and that shut down after a couple of years too and he's retired. Some of my fave nights were there though. I DJed a Hogmanay there once and it was one of the most fun nights I've had. Do miss the place! by StonedPhysicist (Wed 7th Jul 2021 9:42pm)
  • Their own brand salt and vinegar crisps are maybe a quid for six packs, and some of them taste like they've poured an entire bottle of vinegar into them. Strongly recommend. by StonedPhysicist (Wed 14th Jul 2021 10:34am)
  • >muhummara >The principal ingredients are usually fresh or dried peppers, usually Aleppo pepper, ground walnuts, breadcrumbs, and olive oil. • For good beers, a non exhaustive list: Three Judges, Grunting Growler, Inn Deep, Koelschip Yard, Blackfriars, Bon Accord, The State, Allison Arms, Drygate.. should tide you over. If you fancy whisky, the Lismore (helpfully a 60 second stumble from the Judges) is the place to go. by StonedPhysicist (Thu 12th Aug 2021 11:23am)

  • The management of the uni made half the catering staff redundant and then tried to hire them to work in this building under a wholly-owned subsidiary company. Longer hours, lower wages, profit seeking, no union recognition. Claimed it "wasn't fire and rehire because they were being made redundant, not fired". Won't be giving them a penny. by StonedPhysicist (Thu 30th Sep 2021 11:27am)
  • Aye. Even more fun when you realise the owners of the company are the uni's own senior managers and HR. No fucking shame. by StonedPhysicist (Thu 30th Sep 2021 2:32pm)

  • *gestures vaguely at Green candidates* Sadly Susan Aitken will get back in. The SNP will run two candidates in my ward, which is strongly Yes. Plus, the other SNP councillor is renowned locally for being exceptionally on the ball, so I'd imagine she'll have convinced a lot of people to go SNP 1 and 2 in preferences. I have no love for Aitken but I'm sure the Tories and Labour will run a pretty misogynist campaign targeting her as a person instead of as a politician. Hope I'm wrong. by StonedPhysicist (Tue 26th Oct 2021 9:45am)

  • Thing is, you can guarantee this is happening all over. If it's easier to just let someone go with a shining reference than to discipline properly, I fully expect other universities would be doing the same to Glasgow. The whole sector is rife with power dynamics.. if you're a PhD student or a technician whose job relies on the grant income of an abusive PI, are you going to speak out? Or even if you do, do you think anything will happen when there are hundreds of thousands of pounds of income attached to that name? I don't know what the answer is but there's a lot that needs to be done. by StonedPhysicist (Wed 3rd Nov 2021 12:42pm)

  • Landlady at the Judges can kick back a whole crawl with a single side eye look. Love her to bits but by god I'd never want to get her angry. Mind, if it were a smaller quieter group she'd probably be fine with it - when I was a student she was fine with my lot, but it's the loud costumed bellends who come in 20 at a time and can't hold their tequila that won't get far. by StonedPhysicist (Wed 10th Nov 2021 9:21am)

  • The main barrier is the cost required to get back the rolling stock, from the discussions I've had with Unite (who represent both the drivers and manufacturers). The Transport Act 2019 allows any council to run a municipally owned service, but they're all still going for Bus Service Improvement Partnerships. Honestly I think the political will is there with a lot of councillors - particularly Labour and Green ones and likely a number of SNP and Lib Dem ones, they just need an injection of a couple of million to get the buses back. One council just needs to be the first under this legislation to say "here's some cash - we're taking your buses and TUPEing your staff, now fuck off." and others will follow suit once they see it's possible. So many skills in planning were lost to deregulation but that's not impossible to get back if enough local authorities get on board. Without wanting to focus too much on the Central Belt, since rural areas are far more reliant on buses as lifeline services, Glasgow could be the first and use SPT to coordinate it with others in the region, then bodies can follow. by StonedPhysicist (Mon 6th Dec 2021 12:08pm)
  • Wouldn't surprise me, but I don't really follow what goes on in England too much, I'm afraid, so I can't say for certain. by StonedPhysicist (Mon 6th Dec 2021 7:42pm)
  • Yeah, it's difficult to organise an evening or a date when your only options after work tend to be pubs. Or even it would be nice to have options for a cup of tea after a club while waiting for the trains/buses to start back up again that isn't bloody McDonalds. by StonedPhysicist (Sun 12th Dec 2021 2:31pm)

From Balloch up the old coffin road where there's a big rock at the summit where an old cross used to be (according to old OS maps)? • The villas next to Crosshill station face onto some of the cheapest flats in Govanhill. Hell, the prices of the flats on Queens Drive compared to the ones just next to them on Vicky Road are night and day. It's not even a gradual thing here, it's genuinely a step change. Boggles the mind. by StonedPhysicist (Sat 8th Jan 2022 1:21pm)
  • Honestly, either get the train to Partick and walk, or walk up to the Gallowgate and get the 2, both options have you coming in from the Dumbarton Road entrance. • Mine was £17.5k in 2013, wasn't exactly moneybags but after five years of student loan it was great. Didn't need a degree for it, was a technical job, but it was with some nice enough folk. I think that same job is now going about £19k? Could probably have earned a lot more working a lot harder, but hey. The lack of stress back then after an MSci was worth its weight in gold, if I'd done a PhD I'd have had a breakdown. by StonedPhysicist (Thu 27th Jan 2022 8:49pm)
  • Cut down the booze a little this month, had enough saved to take myself out for a swanky meal for one at Battlefield Rest last night. • I mean, I'm in Unite and the IWW, the former because they're recognised at my workplace and the latter because I support them ideologically and want to learn how to bring those skills to my Unite branch. I have nothing good to say about vast swathes of the GMB, though. A few very good branches, and a lot of utter dinosaurs. by StonedPhysicist (Tue 1st Feb 2022 8:40pm)
  • Partick Burgh Hall and the Mosque both seemed to be doing them last week, knew folk who went for them. by StonedPhysicist (Wed 2nd Feb 2022 10:26am)
  • I mean, that's what my organisation's GMB branch are like. If they're not doing yous right, then get involved and change it. I've got a meeting with HR on Friday to demand a better pay deal because our consultative has gone over 50% turnout for the first time ever after I busted my ass trying to get people to vote. Suddenly, people are like "wait we can do this?" after years of assuming it was all just moribund. It's not easy but unless your cohort are willing to take over the structure it'll just stay that way. by StonedPhysicist (Wed 2nd Feb 2022 8:18pm)
  • All branches should be doing their elections this quarter, so this is exactly your time to stack the branch with some decent folk! Anyone who's been a member longer than 13 weeks just needs a proposer and seconder. I'm really hoping we get more people standing, I don't get any formal facility time (trying to change that) so all my union stuff is done on top of the day job. • Having done both a regular and an OU degree, the reason the latter works is because it's all been designed to be remote from day one (with occasional but very much optional in person sessions). Every bit of respect for how much lecturers, technical, and admin staff have tried to transfer things online, but with it being seen as stopgap measures, it's never going to compare to the OU. by StonedPhysicist (Sat 19th Feb 2022 8:52am)
  • I used to live by St George's Cross, and I remember going in every morning and over the space of a few weeks seeing the different colours of mould on the water under the tracks growing a new layer with a different colour, like some sort of cursed lasagna. by StonedPhysicist (Sat 19th Feb 2022 9:12pm)

  • In favour of the "tap and cap" aspect, if it's rolled out over all providers (maybe also the Subway? ScotRail stations within GCC limits?) The BSIP is a step forward but it's frankly not enough - sure, access the funds, but this still keeps the routes in private hands rather than the full municipally owned transport we need. But if it provides some improvement and funding to eventually buy the rolling stock and yeet First, McGill's, and Stagecoach into the Clyde then.. eh. by StonedPhysicist (Wed 9th Mar 2022 12:21pm)

  • Some interesting history about the 90, as the "Inner Circle" - originally there were to be three circles, the Intermediate Circle only lasted a few years and the Outer Circle never materialised. I can't remember where I originally read about this, but [someone on Flickr posted about it last month](https://flickr.com/photos/89656176@N08/51905014111). FWIW I missed the 90 by about 30 seconds today, thankfully a tiny wee McGills 121 wasn't long behind. by StonedPhysicist (Wed 9th Mar 2022 9:31pm)
  • It's a shame because it's a fucking lovely place. Short of one of my neighbours selling up and taking pity on me, I know as soon as my landlord sells up I'll be on my arse trying to find anywhere decent around G42. • If you're in Langside (her ward), there is a second SNP candidate amongst the 9 standing. It's fairly safe to say three of the seats are going to be SNP, SNP, Labour. The fourth seat is a toss up between the Tories and Greens. I'll declare an interest as a Green so take or leave this, but I'll probably be voting: Green, TUSC, the-SNP-who-isn't-Susan, Labour, Labour, Lib Dem, Susan, Tory, Alba. That's the closest way I can keep us Tory free and ensure my transfers don't get anywhere near her. If you're not a socialist then Green, the other SNP, and after that do what you want. by StonedPhysicist (Thu 31st Mar 2022 1:10pm)

  • I personally love it but, fair disclaimer, I'm one of the DJs! Mix of goth/post-punk, italo-disco, and 80s synthpop, very much not Serious Music For Serious People. Slightly younger crowd than Stigmata or Asylum, but still have a wide age range (one of the regulars who sadly passed away last year was in her late 50s). Always been a pretty queer crowd (more so now it's in Bonjour) but not exclusively. Been going on various venues since 2010. Only complaint we ever get is that the music is sometimes a bit quiet, but we've a fair number of neurodivergent regulars who appreciate it and people who just come to chat rather than dance, so no need to blast their eardrums. If you're coming along for the first time, come up to the booth and say hi, happy to grab you a pint! by StonedPhysicist (Mon 4th Apr 2022 3:00pm)
  • You'd be more than welcome! I don't tend to promote it on Reddit because I mostly use this account for politics stuff, but drop any of the social media accounts a message if you want one of the DJs to introduce ourselves one night so you don't feel like you're by yourself - always happy to meet new faces. The guys at 48K/Symbiosis (rave, drum and bass, jungle, etc - lovely lads and great vibe, even if very much not my usual tunes) made a point of that the first couple of times I went and it really made a difference, so I try and make sure we do the same! by StonedPhysicist (Mon 4th Apr 2022 3:48pm)
  • Yeah, there are a couple of short megamixes on our Mixcloud I did for World Goth Day and Subcity, but nowhere near enough given how long we've been doing it... I really need to get the sets we did for Clyde Built put up as well, they're on their SoundCloud. When I get in tonight I'll put a Mixes page on our [website](https://www.danse-macabre.co.uk) so they're all in one place, but there's a link to the Mixcloud on the sidebar (or at the bottom if you're on mobile, I think) in the meantime, will PM you when I've done it! :) by StonedPhysicist (Mon 4th Apr 2022 5:55pm)
  • Can't speak for the sound, but hardly crap transport links when Battlefield and Mount Florida have like 7 bus routes and a train station. Getting back isn't gonna be easy when everyone leaves at once, sure, but that's always going to be an issue for any venue. by StonedPhysicist (Mon 4th Apr 2022 6:02pm)
  • Cool, message me when you're moving up, and I'll drop you a list of places of interest! by StonedPhysicist (Mon 4th Apr 2022 8:18pm)
  • Welcome aboard! There's also Asylum, Stigmata, and NULL/VOID depending on your particular flavour of goth or electronica. I went to the Catty once in 2009 and that was enough for me! But I'm sure it serves those who love it well. by StonedPhysicist (Tue 5th Apr 2022 12:29am)

  • Might be the same guy that drove a 6 I was on last year. Chatted to every single person getting on, led a singalong with some of the auld dears going up past Cowcaddens, and when I rang the buzzer he started telling me about the house he grew up on on GWR. Sent First a wee feedback thing telling them to give the driver of that bus a raise. Made up for every other journey I'd been on all year. by StonedPhysicist (Wed 6th Apr 2022 9:22pm)
  • Sometimes it's on the same night as Stigmata, around the corner, and I jump between them. Nothing like the mental shift between goth and dnb! Everyone always looks so happy to see a goth show up and groove to some jungle. :) by StonedPhysicist (Thu 7th Apr 2022 9:25am)
  • Boomers really love using emojis on Reddit. Honest to fuck, at least it's telling on yourself that your opinion on anything can be handily ignored if you use the cry-laughing emote. by StonedPhysicist (Fri 8th Apr 2022 9:16am)
  • My experience has been that the Gay™ Scene (i.e. Merchant City) is pretty shite all things considered. Same identikit commercial trash as you get in any major city. Never had a good time there myself but I'm sure some do. But if you look for explicitly *queer* venues and events you'll have a much better time of things. by StonedPhysicist (Fri 8th Apr 2022 2:00pm)
  • If you're on Facebook, there's a group called Queer Events Glasgow which is quite useful. Queer nights are often found at Bonjour, Poetry Club, Flying Duck, Stereo, Bloc, depends on the kind of music you like. • I know they're not quite the same but they always feel like such a letdown compared to the indoor markets I grew up with in the Midlands/North of England. I really love how Leeds has a bunch of effectively pedestrian streets/lanes with glass roofs, feels much more pleasant to walk around. by StonedPhysicist (Fri 22nd Apr 2022 12:24pm)
  • Doesn't help when the drivers barely listen. "Do you go down Victoria Road" "what?" "Vicky Road" "??" "Govanhill" "can't hear you mate" "fuck it, single" "how many stops" It's so fucking opaque how to get a bus here as a resident, no wonder visitors struggle. Best reason to use the app has been to avoid talking, this will definitely help. by StonedPhysicist (Fri 22nd Apr 2022 12:30pm)

  • 1. Green 2. TUSC 3. Lib Dem (maybe - haven't checked and seen if the candidate's a wank or no) 4. the SNP candidate that isn't Susan Aitken Then probably not going to bother with the other 5 candidates. Honestly, the messaging from Labour has been frankly terrible and misleading, all about reserved/national matters. Now they're going all-out in England on a "be harsher on drugs than anyone else" message, and pretending like we don't have mostly proportional representation in Scottish councils, I can't even bring myself to put them above Aitken, as I'd planned to do up until recently. Alba and the Tories can fuck off regardless. by StonedPhysicist (Mon 2nd May 2022 7:32pm)

  • I worked on the Langside campaign, and we knew we were doing well, but couldn't have predicted doing THIS well. We were fourth place last time, scraping in with <100 transfers to beat the Tories, so we had to assume we were going to be in a similar position or maybe going up to third. For reference, the only seat before today that we won on first preferences was Hillhead (a 3 seat ward, so even harder to win!) I'm not too sure we'd have got two in Langside even if we had put them in, but I've not seen the transfers yet. In 2027 though, who knows? by StonedPhysicist (Fri 6th May 2022 2:11pm)
  • It's a risk though, until there's a solid bed of support where both can get in, you risk people voting for one and not the other, and then potentially both losing out. But again, we'll see next time, if these numbers hold up over the next few years. Not that I want to think about elections again for another four years, the past two have worn me out! by StonedPhysicist (Fri 6th May 2022 4:42pm)

  • >But, maybe it will be better than the render. Maybe the brickwork will be nice, maybe planting will soften the space etc. So long as they’re build to last and not a quick cash grab on the back of hundreds of folk wanting a flat near Queens Park it will be a good thing though. I wish I had even the slightest bit of faith that it will be anything other than overpriced shoeboxes built out of the cheapest material available, that begin falling apart in 20 years. by StonedPhysicist (Wed 11th May 2022 8:44pm)

  • Honestly, the state of the streets near Hampden when Rihanna played was far worse than any old firm match. This fucking city sometimes. by StonedPhysicist (Sun 15th May 2022 10:27am)
  • So just to be clear **this isn't actually a coalition** - the Greens are voting in favour of an SNP council leader and Lord Provost, in exchange for some committee chairs and a focus on some shared priorities. It's still an SNP minority administration. And if Labour come up with some good ideas then there's no reason they can't approach us for votes. The **only** options for leader were the ineffectual Susan Aitken, or the overtly corrupt major landlord George Redford. And between the two of them (plus Frank McAveety being brought back into the fold) there's frankly no contest. by StonedPhysicist (Tue 17th May 2022 4:47pm)
  • If there hadn't been Redford and McAveety back in charge days after the election, there might have been scope to ignore Sarwar. Frankly I'd have been in favour of working with Labour. Or even agreeing an SNP minority with Green and Labour seats to take it up to a working majority on a shared platform. However, apparently constitutional vibes are more important than being seen to work collectively. Kudos to you for being one of the few Labour Left folk I've seen raging at the situation being completely avoidable under normal circumstances though. Seeing otherwise decent (and Living Rent) folk suggest that somehow a major landlord who skimmed the milk off Dalmarnock and was baws-deep in the equal pay failure would somehow be BETTER for workers and tenants than the useless Aitken was certainly interesting this afternoon. by StonedPhysicist (Tue 17th May 2022 5:23pm)

  • Just head along to the goth clubs, most folk are pretty chill. Usual good strat is to go outside when folk are smoking and say it's your first time out, easy way to start a conversation. I got adopted by a gaggle of goths on a night out when I first moved here in 2008 and we're all still pals. Asylum was last night, but Danse Macabre and Stigmata are coming up in a couple of weeks. by StonedPhysicist (Sun 29th May 2022 12:07pm)
  • Waiting until some point between 9 and 1 to hear if I have jury duty, or if they don't call to find out after 5. Sure, not like I need to plan my work out. Sakes. I don't even mind doing it, but they chose a bloody awkward week and way of doing it. by StonedPhysicist (Mon 30th May 2022 9:54am)

  • Yeah I don't know what's going on with the List's layout. There's also the Skinny and for electronic stuff Resident Advisor, but for gigs in general I actually just tend to browse the Tickets Scotland listings. Rather give them my money than Ticketmaster. Dunno if they still have the big list in their shop window but I used to go there nigh on monthly to gawp and see what I'd be going to. by StonedPhysicist (Tue 14th Jun 2022 9:38am)

  • Always feel that about Central. Surrounded by pollution and grimness - I know that's not unusual for city centre stations but it always feels particularly unpleasant going to Central compared to most other places I've visited. At least Queen Street has George Square. by StonedPhysicist (Thu 30th Jun 2022 4:41pm)
  • Yep, been a DJ for years, we always print off more than we actually need for poster runs because the cost difference between 100, 200, 500, is fairly negligible. Though I've always assumed it's primarily just other PR runners, musicians, and DJs who look at posters, rather than punters! by StonedPhysicist (Thu 30th Jun 2022 4:40pm)

  • Vicky Road was an absolute shitshow on Saturday, passed multiple fights by 5pm. Combination of the bigot parades, Primal Scream, and Calvin Harris, was definitely an interesting day. Plus the lack of trains back after the gig meant there were cunts milling about super late who'd started drinking 9 hours before, was definitely worse than most of the football crowds, at least half of them get coaches away. by StonedPhysicist (Mon 4th Jul 2022 8:59pm)
  • Aye, was in McNeills for a wee bit, but the Vicky had a guy fifty sheets to the wind outside trying to take a swing at punters twice his weight. Battlefield Road just becomes a stream of bottles and pish after gigs - saw a guy after the Gallagher gig going for a slash by the station *on a CCTV post*. Mind boggles. Perhaps his bucket hat was on too tight. by StonedPhysicist (Mon 4th Jul 2022 10:16pm)

  • Aye. Might be because I'm not exactly.. uhh.. *a visible bastion of masculinity* that bouncers probably figured I wasn't likely to be much of a threat. Unless someone nicked my eyeliner. Granted I was usually going to places like the Art School (RIP), Classic Grand (when it was still good), Stereo, Broadcast, Sleazys, rather than your Flat 0/1s and Garages of the world, so maybe they just had different crowds? by StonedPhysicist (Wed 6th Jul 2022 1:28pm)
  • When new drivers get trained, or there's a sufficient offer for existing drivers to work on their rest days. It's insane just how much of the railway relies on people working overtime, not just the drivers. Can't be safe. by StonedPhysicist (Wed 6th Jul 2022 2:31pm)
  • Industrial Journalism. There is a huge lack of detailed reporting on industrial relations, strikes, union campaigning, etc, except for in the Morning Star, which frankly nobody reads. Some actual regular and COMPREHENSIVE updates on what's going on and normalising the concepts of collective action and bargaining rather than just "Oh look there's a strike let's shit on them" would be a major boost to working people. by StonedPhysicist (Thu 7th Jul 2022 4:32pm)

  • To be fair, it was Khan's - the big one halfway down the street, I'm sure if I'd gone down Calder or Allison Street the many shops down there would have done them cheaper. But yeah, tasty as they are there was no way was I paying that much. by StonedPhysicist (Fri 8th Jul 2022 5:52pm)
  • It's grand, you'd never know it even exists from street level - just go in an unassuming door, up a badly lit stair, then you hear music and suddenly you're in a secret wee record shop. Found a record there on Saturday that was a house remix of a doom metal track! by StonedPhysicist (Tue 12th Jul 2022 12:09pm)
  • Cardow is a wank even by Glasgow music scene standards. The way he treats his staff is abysmal, firing them for unionising should be his downfall. All power to the Broadcast staff, nobody deserves a shit boss or unsafe and underpaid conditions like that. Hope Unite stick the boot in. by StonedPhysicist (Tue 12th Jul 2022 12:06pm)
  • There's a goth gig on in the Note (Byronic Sex & Exile) and a psych gig on in Sleazys (Acid Rooster) on the 23rd. If you're into political music David Rovics is playing at the Squirrel on the 24th. Otherwise, venues you might want to check listings for (or just go for pints at) are McChuill's, McNeill's, the Old Hairdressers, 13th Note, Bloc, Bonjour if you're LGBTQ+, the Ice Box... There may be things going on at Glasgow Autonomous Space that are less musical, as well. And if you're into goth/italo-disco then when you move here go to Danse Macabre. </shameless plug> by StonedPhysicist (Tue 12th Jul 2022 12:29pm)

  • There have been anti abortion protestors outside hospitals for a while now, the ones outside the Sandyford are harassing and filming anyone who goes in. Buffer zone legislation is being brought in by Gillian Mackay to stop them being allowed to protest within a certain distance (while still allowing for protests by, for example, healthcare trade unions). • Definitely adding it to my response to the consultation. Fairly sure it was in my response in 2017(?) but I'll do it again. Probably worth also lodging it with Holly Bruce - dunno if she has much sway over the process as a whole but I know she was super into cycling infrastructure and better streets. I don't even cycle but if they put segregated cycle paths in Battlefield I will genuinely learn, the way drivers behave here has always put me off but if I don't have to share a lane with cars I'll take it. by StonedPhysicist (Wed 13th Jul 2022 5:38pm)

  • Eyy, good stuff. Had my first one a couple of months back. Nae bevvying today or taking anything that thins the blood. If you want to take painkillers in advance, paracetamol is fine, but it shouldn't be too painful - more like a series of scratches. Moisturise the skin where you're getting it, and make sure you've got some extra mild perfume-free soap/shower gel to clean it with. Your artist will give you aftercare instructions, follow them to the letter. The more care you take of it in the first month, the better it'll look and the longer it'll stay looking good. Keep it out of the sun for a week or two, but worth getting some factor 50 in for the future, that's the main thing that'll cause fading. Hope it goes well! by StonedPhysicist (Fri 5th Aug 2022 10:12am)
  • Because the Cathcart Circle services have been all but withdrawn, so all you're left with is the hourly Newton service. There are three morning Circle ones (07:35, 08:13, 08:19 from Central) and two evening ones (17:05, 17:24 from Central) Monday-Friday and that's it. In the past there'd have been one in each direction every hour Monday-Saturday so you could REASONABLY get to Central three times an hour. But yeah, now it's just hourly what's the point? Things are moderately better on the Queens Park side of the Circle, but even now trains at night are hourly. Will we ever get pre-COVID service levels back? Probably not. At least not until they train hundreds more drivers. And given they're now suggesting de-staffing the stations (yeah, good luck running Mount Florida with no staff) things are going to be even worse unless the RMT and politicians with non-zero levels of vertebrae defeat the proposals. </rant> by StonedPhysicist (Wed 10th Aug 2022 10:20am)
  • Mount Florida is the most heavily-used station on the Circle, serving Hampden events, a college, a hospital, and one of the most densely-populated parts of Glasgow, it's also the only one with a lift. Staff at the station help with the marshalling of events, assist disabled passengers board and alight, provide ZoneCards, and of course sell tickets when the machines are down. For reference, pre-pandemic Shawlands had around 180,000 annual passengers whereas Mount Florida had around 1,300,000. During COVID that was still about 30,000 vs 200,000. The cost of station staff is, frankly, small beans compared to ensuring that a station with over a million users a year has someone on-hand to make sure things are working smoothly. If you want to know more, stop in and ask the station staff themselves. by StonedPhysicist (Wed 10th Aug 2022 12:26pm)

By all means serve food and drink, but somewhere to just go hang out, read, meet friends, without the expectation of drinking. Bonus points if it's open late night - the amount of times I've finished up at a club and just want a cup of tea, a roll, and a sit down before the night bus... by StonedPhysicist (Mon 5th Sep 2022 2:23pm)

  • Short answer: hiring more drivers. There's been a dearth for a while and it's not a hugely attractive job in terms of safety. Bringing it back under municipal control would go a fair way though. The main sticking point for GCC, according to a mate who's a councillor, was that they don't own any depots, and so when First looked like they might sell up but were a bit iffy on selling the land, it was gonna be an issue. by StonedPhysicist (Thu 15th Dec 2022 4:24pm)
  • I grew up in Lincoln, and the Lincoln Bands website and forum was pretty much the only way to get gigs. Every band in the city, past and present, was documented on there with all the discographies and bios, and every band worth their salt was on the forum chatting so that they could make connections, reply to the occasional "band needed for X at Y, genres: A/B/C" posts, and announce their new EPs/merch/MySpace uploads. People would review one another's songs, collaborate, and for a tiny city where only one or two venues even had their own PA system it was a massive draw. The site was run by one guy and all! I was genuinely surprised when I moved here in 2008 that there wasn't an equivalent hub here. Still a bit surprised that there isn't even now - I know websites and forums are probably passé but it seems like an obviously useful thing. I have no web knowledge myself or I'd make one. Surely someone out there might be game? by StonedPhysicist (Fri 16th Dec 2022 12:38am)

Feeling better now but god damn that's three years in a row I've not been able to go down the Judges for a nice long sesh. Ah well, maybe next year. by StonedPhysicist (Mon 19th Dec 2022 12:12pm)

  • Yeah, on Wednesday and Thursday there were fuck-all 4s or 5s going northbound so I had to grab the one single-decker 6 that arrived, crammed so full that the driver had to stop people getting on. I was the only one wearing a mask, and the old woman next to me was coughing up a lung. Got COVID on Saturday. Woo. by StonedPhysicist (Mon 19th Dec 2022 6:52pm)

  • Yeah, don't fuck with capacitors. I work with some x-ray equipment that uses some hefty caps, it needs opening up fairly often but we have a strict "no disassembly until at least 24 hours without power" rule. Doesn't matter how simple the issue is. Most things in our work won't cause immediate harm but that's the one thing we've got which if you're not careful will flat out kill you. by StonedPhysicist (Tue 20th Dec 2022 1:12pm)

  • I still mourn the loss of their pad thai. Yes everything else is delicious but that was really the best. Once went in and got a smoked garlic soup and I'm forever disappointed whenever I go back because I've not seen it since. But yeah, not many venues could get away with a two day long noise music festival in the basement. Feel like if the Note ever shuts, that's it for new bands in the city, nowhere else like it. by StonedPhysicist (Wed 21st Dec 2022 1:22pm)
  • Still testing positive, so unless a miracle happens and I get a negative one in the morning and I can peg it over to Edinburgh at like 8am for any train going south, that's the birthday AND Xmas plans fucked. Feel bad for my folks now spending it alone but no way in hell am I infecting them. Anyone know if the Chinese takeaways are likely to be open on Xmas? The one plus side is my boss is switching my annual leave to sick leave so I'll get the time back to visit them next month or something. • Was clearing out my desk the other day, and found an old wallet. Glad I checked inside it, sadly no money but it did have my Soundhaus members card! Mind going there once for a mate's DJ set at the start of the night, and the most ethereal looking girl all in white just floating over to me from the bar, smiling into the middle distance like "Hiiii...! How are youuu? Would you like to buy any ketamine, at all?" "Nah you're okay" "Okayyyy! Cool! Well... you just let me know any time :):):)" before hovering away again. • I've been drinking there about thirteen years. I've never quite understood why it has an unfriendly reputation, other than the signs up sometimes saying "no subcrawls" which is, frankly, a blessing! Even when I was a student there was no issue, so long as you're not being loud or obnoxious you're welcome in. Ronnie who worked there up until about 2015 used to know exactly what beers I wanted - I'd walk in and he'd be like "Alright StonedPhysicist, you want a pint of number 7 or 9 today." and be pouring before I even sat down! But if you like your ale, and a pub that'll let you bring food in (bless the Curry Pot and Dumpling Monkey) there's really no better place around. I've only just worn off the hangover from being there for my mate's birthday last night! by StonedPhysicist (Thu 5th Jan 2023 7:07pm)

  • A friend of mine used to work in licensing. There's really only two ways they can be shut down - noise complaints, and selling booze without a license. That's why you can never buy alcohol directly (obviously there are ways and means) and if a place gets shut down unexpectedly that's almost certainly the reason why. It's not illegal to hold a party, or any other private ticketed event. So yeah, they COULD raid, but as you say, trying to take in 50 people for having maybe a pill or two or a joint on them is a lot of hassle when you know there's a lot more relevant use of police time at 3am in town. I mean, some idiots might spoil it for the rest of us, and that Sunday Mail journo who did an "exposée" on Checkmate basically forced them into shutting down despite basically finding people having fun and dancing and only offering her days when she asked should be blacklisted from every event in the city, the wee snitch. by StonedPhysicist (Fri 6th Jan 2023 4:37pm)
  • Obviously I'm not a lawyer, and there are likely other ways that they COULD be shut down (insurance comes to mind, or if there was open dealing going on as the cops were walking through), but aye. If you think about it - if half the random punters in the Subby and SWG3 know where the afters were/are, then it's not like the polis and council won't either. Basically if you give them a reason to shut you down, they can and probably will, but if not then it's probably not worth their while. by StonedPhysicist (Fri 6th Jan 2023 5:25pm)

  • It does feel a little bit shit that the modernisation started in what, 2010? 13 years on and all we've got are some new tiles in the stations, barriers that have cards that can't be used for roaches, and half the ceilings are still fishnet. But at least the advertising boards are electronic now so we can get even more ads down there to occupy us now they've taken away the WiFi (that only existed in about 5 stations). • God, the last thing we need is fewer councils. Local democracy in the UK is fucked as it is, compared to other countries in Europe, in terms of the number of constituents per councillor. We need more, smaller, better-funded councils with more powers. • Saving people a click, and underlining that this statement is **from the workers themselves**, and IWW members made up the majority of Saramago staff: >The Saramago Workers members of the IWW are aware that the CCA have made a decision to discontinue their business relationship with Saramago Cafe/Bar. > We had remained hopeful throughout the last five weeks that the owners of Saramago would sit down with us and come to a productive resolution. However, they consistently failed to do so and instead ignored us, refused to talk and actively misled us, the public and remaining workers. Had they engaged with our union this outcome could have been avoided. > We, the unionised workers in Saramago, were targeted for trying to address serious issues related to short-staffing, being over worked and underpaid. > All decisions were led by us but in our attempts to respectfully resolve this dispute we were met with stonewalling from the bosses at Saramago and their representatives. > This situation plainly shows Saramago bosses’ utter disregard for the livelihood and wellbeing of all their workers. Make no mistake, this is the doing of the owners and management of Saramago alone by choosing to act incredibly recklessly rather than engaging with their unionised workers. > It should be clear to all hospitality bosses and management that this is what happens to businesses that attempt to union bust and ignore the demands of their workers. It should also be clear to all workers that this is the strength we have when we get organised and act in solidarity with one another! > Whilst we are disappointed not to have our jobs reinstated we are glad to see a resolution to this dispute and appreciate that the CCA have taken the right stance against a union busting business. We are looking to continue productive communication with the CCA going forward and appreciate the solidarity shown by the CCA workers throughout this dispute. > There are IWW members still employed by Saramago and we will fight for a proper redundancy package for these members. We continue to stand in solidarity with all workers. > A massive thank you to everyone who has come down to our demos, supported our fundraisers, moved their events, shared our statements and otherwise shown support for us over the past 5 weeks. > An injury to one is an injury to all. > The IWW Saramago Workers Union and the IWW Clydeside Branch by StonedPhysicist (Fri 21st Apr 2023 3:16pm)
  • Yep, that's me. There's a Nextbike station about 5 minutes from my flat, and segregated cycle ways for a fair chunk of my commute. But until traffic is reduced, and/or the amount of people who drive like cunts reduces, it just genuinely doesn't feel safe to get on the road. So I end up shelling out for a ZoneCard every 4 weeks which doesn't work on the barriers half the time. by StonedPhysicist (Tue 25th Apr 2023 10:47pm)
  • Worth saying, unless they've changed things in the past year or two if you live outside the G1/G2 zone, and get a card that covers (say) G3, and G1/G2, they give you a card that covers all G zones. I've been fine getting on the bus once or twice going into town from just outwith the zone boundaries as the drivers don't seem to give a fuck, but it's probably not worth *relying* on that. by StonedPhysicist (Wed 26th Apr 2023 7:28pm)

  • Pretty much this. There's no point rioting outside City Chambers or Holyrood, because they're not the ones causing this. Riots need to take place in London to have any major impact, the worst we can target are Tory offices here when that happens. The general strike is another matter but whether the TUC would ever have the balls... I genuinely think the STUC would be game but again, it relies on the TUC to do it down south to properly hurt. by StonedPhysicist (Wed 17th May 2023 7:34pm)

  • Friend of mine works in the franchised one on Glasgow Uni campus, and the staff there aren't Tinderbox but part of a wholly owned subsidiary company of the uni (gross). But from what he says, they're about to get union recognition, so that's at least one good step! Doesn't forgive the shite in the rest of the company. by StonedPhysicist (Wed 24th May 2023 2:28pm)

  • I mean *strictly speaking* the 4 goes directly to the Uni from Cathcart, and the 3 goes to the Dumbarton Road gate from Shawlands, but aye it would be nice if there were an interchange at West Street. by StonedPhysicist (Fri 26th May 2023 2:13pm)

  • With paper thin walls, poorly-installed fixtures in that same shade of grey that's infected all new builds, and a delightful design choice of "it's another fucking bunch of shoebox cubes with zero flourishes", all bought up by a bunch of parasites looking to let them out for £1200pcm. by StonedPhysicist (Sun 28th May 2023 4:27pm)
  • RIP the Soundhaus. There was also a brief bit around when I started DJing where it felt like everyone was getting into it, and a whole bunch of queer nights all started (Blitz, TYCI, a few others that escape me now) all around the Flying Duck and such. I hope all those folk are doing well now. Also shout outs to Cheesy Pop. I remember it hitting capacity every week, hearing Killing In The Name beatmatched into Dancing Queen and the same folk dancing. That it was allowed to wither away was a travesty. by StonedPhysicist (Wed 31st May 2023 1:51pm)
  • Yeah, that wasn't great to wake up to. RiF is pretty much the ideal app for Reddit, not sure if I want to go down the official app route, doesn't exactly fill me with confidence. I still use the old Reddit on browser as well. by StonedPhysicist (Thu 1st Jun 2023 1:02pm)
  • Aye, the folk who run it are sound as. I love when it's on the same night as one of the goth nights round the corner so I can jump between the two! Confuse the dnb fans but they're always super welcoming. by StonedPhysicist (Thu 1st Jun 2023 1:00pm)
  • Ach, various things. Short version is several rebrandings which culminated eventually in them telling him one year to stop playing cheese and just do chart tunes. Naturally everyone coming back that first night to be told their regular requests had been banned hastened the demise. There's lots more as ever there is in student politics but I knew it was my time to depart when a board member told me "students don't like cheesy music, we're going to put on a techno night which is the polar opposite!" while setting up a Subcity event in Jim's which got about 25 people in. He's now doing busy nights at the Hive while the QM has no clubs left. As a life member I'm sad but the whole place is a shell of its former self. I still nip in for a pint every now and then as a point of principle if I happen to be passing, but even the bars are barely open. Guess students don't drink as much any more? by StonedPhysicist (Fri 2nd Jun 2023 12:29pm)
  • Nah, was there last night for a gig. Their guest beer was £6.20 for a pint though, fucking hell. by StonedPhysicist (Sat 3rd Jun 2023 9:13am)
  • It does happen for clubs, but I've never heard of that happening for a gig. It was the venue owner's promotion company who put on Xiu Xiu last night so it would have been in house staff doing the ticket sales, and it would be really out of character for them to refuse folk entry (I used to run events there and the staff were absolutely amazing). If it was the bouncers, well, they're run by a separate company so they're not super answerable to. Worst case you can write to Broadcast and say you weren't allowed to buy a gig ticket by their bouncers on the basis of "no singles". Might not actually achieve anything but given they were the promoters and presumably would have liked to sell more gig tickets, nothing to lose. by StonedPhysicist (Mon 5th Jun 2023 9:10am)
  • Yeah, like it might just be an unfortunate bigging up from a young guy but I'm kinda.. not on board with someone going to a goth night because they want to pick up "goths and socially awkward lassies". by StonedPhysicist (Thu 8th Jun 2023 8:40am)

  • Not really the council, beyond the licensing laws for venues. You want later trains, it's ScotRail to lobby. FWIW, the rail unions all support 24-hour services wherever possible (obviously it has the possibility to interfere with some engineering and maintenance but if the RMT and ASLEF don't have an issue with it, then...) by StonedPhysicist (Sat 24th Jun 2023 4:05pm)

  • Some scab reporter decided to do an "exposé" on Checkmate a few years ago, desperate to blow the lid on this dangerous and violent subculture of depravity. Worst she got was politely offered drugs when asking, then the rest of the night went on. Folk had a dance, went home. Was still enough for her to write a two page spread and get it shut down along with hand wringing quotes from the shitehawk owner of the Garage and Catty in his position on the licensing board, since they're obviously a threat to his business model. I hope she's blacklisted from every DIY event in the city. by StonedPhysicist (Sun 16th Jul 2023 9:52am)
  • Oh, nice of you to finally join us. We gonna hear all about how the IWW secretly masterminded this one? Or how Unite aren't a real union? Or how *a real union* would not have "jumped straight to a strike" whilst pretending there hadn't been months of disputes? Or maybe that the poor innocent boss who couldn't have done ANYTHING wrong was strongarmed by those nasty brutish minimum wage plebs *during the working day*? Can't wait to find out how the bosses deserve to be simped for this time. by StonedPhysicist (Wed 19th Jul 2023 11:47pm)
  • I dunno, I'm a goth and never have folk come up to me. That or I just don't notice because I have earbuds in and walk at gay double-speed, so maybe it's been happening all these years and I've just been oblivious! by StonedPhysicist (Sat 22nd Jul 2023 12:48pm)
  • Oops, another coin in the "being bi but still calling myself gay" jar. Must remember that has a penalty to movement speed! The bi speed patch is a great upgrade but the increased chance to fumble, penalty to decision-making, and inability to sit on any chair without aggravating back pain is quite a trade-off. by StonedPhysicist (Sat 22nd Jul 2023 12:58pm)

  • If an employer sees you'll work for free, they won't think "here's a good diligent worker, let's give them a shot", they'll think "here's a sucker who we can get as much out of with no resistance". As someone else said: know your worth. I realise you're young, so don't be despondent. You're a worker, and bosses need you more than you'll ever need them. Sometimes it'll be more subtle things like asking you to stay back "an extra few minutes to tidy up", or "we're all a family here, we can't afford to give you any more", or "you should be grateful for the opportunities we're giving you!", or "you don't need gloves for that, it's perfectly safe, hurry up we've got customers!" - if they can take advantage of you they will. Write things down, join a union as soon as you can (Unite probably if you're working hospitality jobs), and *know your worth*. Hope the next place you try is better, pal. ✊ by StonedPhysicist (Tue 15th Aug 2023 1:16am)
  • Yeah, which is why their statement about "some buses had as low ridership as 14 people per hour", sounds bad until you think there WAS only one bus per hour. So if the quietest they've had was filling half of one floor, that's genuinely hardly a lack of people. Rather than further ruining it, they need to have MORE night buses, more frequently, and across a wider area. by StonedPhysicist (Tue 15th Aug 2023 11:05am)

  • Back in 2009, my mate and I went to get some chips after a night at the Art School (god bless you RPZ) and grabbed some from Magical (or whatever it's predecessor was) and jumped straight into a taxi. Got back to my kitchen ready to dig in, and the ketchup they put on was the sweetest thing I've ever tasted, like they'd drizzled it in honey. Actually nearly made us throw up. Part of me wants to go back and try it again but I'd be terrified if it was the same! by StonedPhysicist (Mon 4th Sep 2023 5:05pm)
  • I have some sympathy with some smaller flats, though in my close there are 6 bikes up the close. Doesn't bother me HUGELY but if there's a fire in the middle of the night any obstruction is not ideal, or if paramedics need to carry someone out of a flat. Hopefully we get more and more of those bike lockers in parking spaces. by StonedPhysicist (Sun 24th Sep 2023 12:03pm)

  • Honestly not sure now you mention it, apologies! As for whether it's achievable, again, so much will depend on your individual skin/hair/reaction. They say by the third successful one you see about 75% reduction so that would make sense for it to be around 40% per treatment. Not quite sure if that's how mine is but it's at least visible this time! by StonedPhysicist (Fri 20th Oct 2023 9:08pm)
  • Problem is for most of the day there's still only one train per hour in each direction, they still haven't brought the full Cathcart Circle service back. And given the number of buses that go up Pollokshaws Road, I'm not surprised if folk would opt for Worst Bus, unfortunately. by StonedPhysicist (Sun 22nd Oct 2023 5:35pm)

  • Honestly, I respected the grift of the folk who popped up all over G42 with bucket hat stalls. If I'd thought about it, I should have got a few hundred for 50p each on AliExpress and flogged them for a tenner each and made the rest of the year's rent in an afternoon! by StonedPhysicist (Wed 22nd Nov 2023 12:09am)
  • Scrummy Yummy did the finest takeaway pizza. I've never found anywhere do a decent 18" pizza like it - trying to escort that home on the subway when I was barely able to walk was a fucking expedition, but lord was it worth it.
