  • Some building right enough. Canny wait til its all flats and I can buy a wee penthouse in one of those towers. by kenhutson (Wed 9th Jan 2019 7:21pm)

  • Jim’s dad wants a word with you. by kenhutson (Sat 2nd Feb 2019 4:51pm)
  • This actually happens all the time. It’s just over so quickly and we don’t often spend more than a second or two looking at the sky so we don’t see them very often. If you actually stare at the same patch of sky on a clear night for a few minutes you’ll probably see a “shooting star”. I used to see them when I went camping, dozens of times a night. by kenhutson (Sun 3rd Feb 2019 12:25am)
  • To be fair, I wouldn’t recommend shettleston or drumchapel either mate. by kenhutson (Mon 4th Feb 2019 10:34pm)
  • We used to live on Park Circus Lane. There are literally only 2 or 3 cars that can fit there but it is free. The main thing is to park so that the bin lorry can still get past and not to obstruct the garage entrances. This was before they started building the new flats there (are they finished yet?) so it may have changed. by kenhutson (Thu 7th Feb 2019 8:06pm)
  • There are always people looking for players on gumtree. by kenhutson (Sun 17th Feb 2019 9:53pm)

  • She must have gone willingly. So she must have known him well. This is all shady. by kenhutson (Thu 21st Feb 2019 7:34pm)
  • History - books - Waterstones on argyle st? Cooking - some sort of knife/spatula/ mortar&pestle - Lakeland in Buchanan galleries? Art - there are plenty of galleries to get nice prints or if you want cheaper maybe look for some art supplies somewhere? by kenhutson (Thu 21st Feb 2019 10:02pm)
  • I’m not suggesting it wasn’t him. I haven’t heard all the evidence, so I have no idea if it was him or not. He’s been found guilty by a jury, so I sincerely hope it was him. I am just speculating how one gets a 6 year old out of her house in the middle of the night without the child making enough noise to wake the other adults in the house. by kenhutson (Fri 22nd Feb 2019 6:38pm)
  • Unless you have a particular reason, I would thoroughly recommend not moving to Glasgow. I was born and have lived most of my life here. It rains a lot. And the lifestyle of the people here is quite bad. There are many, many more cities in Europe that would offer you a much better experience. by kenhutson (Sun 24th Mar 2019 11:49am)
  • I have said nothing derogatory. Everything I said is true. by kenhutson (Sun 24th Mar 2019 12:15pm)
  • Thanks for the support. It’s ok. I expected it. by kenhutson (Sun 24th Mar 2019 12:29pm)
  • Glasgow’s history of having some of the highest smoking, drinking and drug related diseases in Europe is well documented. That is not an opinion but a fact. We are all used to it, but people who are not from Glasgow would be shocked at how little time is spent outdoors or on physical activity by the average Glaswegian. We get about 6 hours of daily daylight in the winter. A lot of people count “drinking alcohol” as their number one hobby (or as we rather disingenuously refer to it “socialising with friends”). by kenhutson (Sun 24th Mar 2019 12:26pm)
  • I think people who have never experienced life outside Glasgow don’t want to hear it. Yes, it has certain charms, but overall it’s not a top place to live. by kenhutson (Sun 24th Mar 2019 12:37pm)
  • You’ll notice I haven’t recommended any other British cities either. Listen, we are all stuck here. OP isn’t yet. by kenhutson (Sun 24th Mar 2019 12:35pm)
  • Please re-read what I wrote. I did not make any absolute statements, as you are incorrectly suggesting. by kenhutson (Sun 24th Mar 2019 12:55pm)
  • These are problems that exist in the city that we are talking about. The fact that they also exist elsewhere is, frankly, irrelevant. I really don’t see your point. by kenhutson (Sun 24th Mar 2019 1:29pm)
  • I’m happy for you. by kenhutson (Sun 24th Mar 2019 1:28pm)
  • Lol. Are you suggesting that there are no social problems in the Bahamas because it’s sunny? Alcohol consumption in Glasgow is at terrifying levels. I have my doubts that Belgium is anywhere near as bad. by kenhutson (Sun 24th Mar 2019 1:54pm)
  • Again you have twisted my words. That’s not what I said. Suggesting that some people say one thing is not the same as saying everybody else says the opposite. Obviously there are some people who like it here. by kenhutson (Sun 24th Mar 2019 1:50pm)
  • “You sayin my clobber’s no the business?” - You, probably by kenhutson (Sun 24th Mar 2019 2:01pm)
  • Now before I get criticised further here, I am obviously speaking in generalities. Not everything I say applies to everybody. And if you are the type of person who wants to eat healthy and participate in sport then obviously those things are available to you in Glasgow. However... there are problems in Glasgow with unhealthy living. The vast majority of people do not exercise regularly. Most people are not into sport, or if they are their participation extends no further than watching. Diets are not healthy. Obesity is a problem. People drink way too much alcohol. In Glasgow, alcohol consumption is so prevalent that the average person is a binge drinker without realising it. It is considered pretty normal to get drunk twice a week or more, or to drink a whole bottle of wine while sitting in your house watching tv on a weeknight. In terms of how most people spend their leisure time, it mostly consists of sitting in the house watching tv after work +/- alcohol. The weekends might include a night in a pub or club getting drunk. There are sporting facilities available, but these are generally under-utilised. The weather doesn’t help in this regard, as it rains so often and the weather is so changeable that it is very difficult to plan any outdoor activities or day trips more than a day or two in advance. In the winter, it’s dark from 4pm onwards. So if you work Mon-Fri 9-5 it is actually very feasible that you don’t see the sun between Sunday afternoon and the following Saturday morning. Most people in Scotland will be vitamin D deficient by the end of winter for this very reason. This leads to seasonal affective disorder in some. by kenhutson (Sun 24th Mar 2019 2:59pm)
  • No I’ve never lived in Berlin. I agree that the main issue is the weather. by kenhutson (Sun 24th Mar 2019 3:07pm)
  • I think that the best area of Glasgow is the south side. Battlefield, Mount Florida, Cathcart, Shawlands, Strathbungo, Newlands, Pollokshields, Pollokshaws, Maxwell Park and Giffnock are all recommended. There are loads of amenities like shops, bars, restaurants. There are some fantastic parks like Rouken Glen, Pollok, Newlands and Queen’s Park. Most of the areas I’ve listed are less than half an hour to Glasgow city centre by public transport. Rents aren’t as expensive as the city centre or west end for similar properties. There are some really good schools for kids, both public and private. Most of these areas are quite quiet and residential unless you’re on the main thoroughfares. It’s ideal. by kenhutson (Wed 17th Apr 2019 7:21pm)

  • It is the distant future. The year 2000. We are robots. by kenhutson (Fri 26th Apr 2019 8:41pm)
  • I would second this. The subway alone will get you to Glasgow uni, Strathclyde uni, the west end, and city centre. Pretty much all of Glasgow’s attractions are within a 10 minute walk of a subway. For the rare occasions you want to go further afield, just buy a day ticket. by kenhutson (Thu 2nd May 2019 1:48pm)
  • Why wouldn’t it be? by kenhutson (Sat 11th May 2019 10:02pm)
  • But isn’t that the point of them, though? If you can’t get it up the catholics why bother marching at all? by kenhutson (Tue 14th May 2019 1:36pm)
  • That’s typical Stirling Albion behaviour by kenhutson (Wed 15th May 2019 7:45pm)
  • I think you’ll find that the real blight on Glasgow is the people who live in council flats. (Gets the popcorn ready) by kenhutson (Sat 18th May 2019 5:17pm)
  • “Working” class? Try “claiming” class. by kenhutson (Sat 18th May 2019 6:44pm)

  • Castlemilk is full of Pakistani cricket hooligans. Watch yersel. by kenhutson (Tue 4th Jun 2019 10:40am)
  • The Ark on North Frederick Street is quite good for sports. They have lots of tvs and if you ask they will find the cricket on one of them for you. by kenhutson (Tue 4th Jun 2019 2:03pm)
  • What part of private land do you not get? It belongs to the surrounding buildings and unless you are an owner, or a tenant, you have no right of access. Would you open up your garden to the general public to sit in just cause it’s a nice day? And then clean up all the litter and take care of the maintenance afterwards? I suspect not. Just cause you desire something, doesn’t mean you can just take it mate. by kenhutson (Tue 4th Jun 2019 2:12pm)
  • When it was a residential area the owners all had a key to the gate, just like many other similar private gardens all over the west end still do. by kenhutson (Tue 4th Jun 2019 2:38pm)
  • I think the fundamental flaw in your thinking is that you believe this to be a park. It is a private garden, not a park. A park is open to the public, a private garden is not. There lies your confusion (and outrage). And stop making it a rich vs poor thing. Poor people wouldn’t let folk sit in their gardens either. by kenhutson (Tue 4th Jun 2019 2:36pm)
  • Who’s gonna do that then? You? Or is someone going to be hired to do this? Who’s going to pay their wage? The owners? The council? But it’s not council owned. The police? They’ll say that it’s private land and the owner should just lock the gate if they don’t want litter. So how is this going to work then? by kenhutson (Tue 4th Jun 2019 2:40pm)
  • Well, you can’t do that. Because Glasgow Green also has owners who wouldn’t be happy with you doing so. If we extrapolate your thinking, we should just commandeer a few buildings in the city centre from their rightful owners, demolish them, and turn them into parks for the public to use. Because... we just want to? by kenhutson (Tue 4th Jun 2019 2:52pm)
  • WHO IS “THEY”?? Why would “they” have any motivation whatsoever to do this? by kenhutson (Tue 4th Jun 2019 3:04pm)
  • To be fair, the guy is talking about seizing a garden from its rightful owners for the use of “the people”. He does sound like a bit of a Bolshevik. It was a fair comment. by kenhutson (Tue 4th Jun 2019 3:09pm)
  • “Let them keep it”? Whatever you want to call it, forcing someone to give up their private property and allocating it to others sounds a bit communist to me. I’d say that sounds pretty dramatic. I’ve got a nice garden at my house, but I don’t want strangers in using it. I’ve got a nice living room too, but I’m not going to let joe public in to watch the football. My kitchen isn’t bad, but I’m not going to open my cupboards for the local homeless to come round and eat all my food. I’ve got money in my wallet, but I’m not going to leave it out on the table in the pub for everybody to go and buy themselves a drink with. by kenhutson (Tue 4th Jun 2019 3:15pm)
  • The. Council. Don’t. Own. It. by kenhutson (Tue 4th Jun 2019 3:20pm)
  • It. Is. Not. A. Park. by kenhutson (Tue 4th Jun 2019 3:20pm)
  • Are you advocating that private entities are forced to give up their private property, either in whole or in part? by kenhutson (Tue 4th Jun 2019 3:29pm)
  • I think it is becoming clear that you are someone who has communist sentiments but doesn’t actually realise it or want to admit it. That’s cool. I’m not against communism in principle, but my point is that it’s not the law of the land. Private property is private property. Just because someone else wants what you have, you cannot be forced to give it up if you don’t want to. by kenhutson (Tue 4th Jun 2019 3:35pm)
  • Yep you are right about compulsory purchase. Fair point. by kenhutson (Tue 4th Jun 2019 3:44pm)

  • What is going on here? by kenhutson (Sat 8th Jun 2019 1:15pm)
  • I was raised catholic and our priest would never have allowed any of this. You weren’t even allowed in the church with football colours on. The priest was (predictably) a massive Celtic fan, had a season ticket, the lot... But he drew a line between football and religion - as it should be. This would never have been allowed in his church in a million years. by kenhutson (Sat 8th Jun 2019 2:57pm)
  • Actually it’s just ‘The Celtic Football Club’. No Glasgow in there. by kenhutson (Sat 8th Jun 2019 2:55pm)
  • Unlike others, there is no confusion here. by kenhutson (Sat 8th Jun 2019 7:48pm)
  • Technically this is correct. [ Glasgow has, on average, a relatively low car ownership level compared with the rest of Scotland, with half of all households (47%) not owning a car.](https://www.glasgow.gov.uk/CHttpHandler.ashx?id=1846&p=0) by kenhutson (Sat 8th Jun 2019 10:17pm)
  • Households. Not people. Within many of those households there are more people than cars. Very few will have more cars than people. Therefore I stand by my original statement that it’s highly likely that the majority of people don’t own cars. by kenhutson (Sun 9th Jun 2019 5:27pm)
  • I had quite a few part time jobs when I was younger. Supermarket shelf stacker, clothes shop assistant, restaurant waiting staff, potato technician, barman (have to be 18 but some places hire glass collectors at 16). Retail is always looking for young folk, you just have to be confident and likeable in the interview. Print out 50 CVs, and go round town handing them into shops. Don’t just hand them to the first person you find though, ask to speak to the boss. Then give them a bit of chat - remember they are hiring you to chat to the customers so if they see you’re comfortable talking to them that’s a good start. They’ll then know your face and not just see a name in a pile of CVs, and they’ll be more likely to call you in for an interview. by kenhutson (Mon 10th Jun 2019 8:19pm)

  • Our dog walker dog sits too, albeit in her own home. She charges £25/night which is reasonable. However, the fact that you are inconveniencing yourself by staying in their home in order to make their dog feel more at home should probably be charged extra. I’d say £35/night at least wouldn’t be unreasonable. Unless they are providing you with food (for you), etc. by kenhutson (Fri 28th Jun 2019 7:22pm)
  • Google maps is pretty accurate for bus numbers and routes. But sometimes the times aren’t that accurate. You can always get the number from google then check the bus website for the timetable. by kenhutson (Tue 2nd Jul 2019 12:15pm)

You can’t leave your rubbish anywhere you like and then say that it’s the council’s fault for not putting a bin exactly where you wanted it to be. by kenhutson (Sat 27th Jul 2019 3:11pm)

  • Canada is west of here. Hamilton is 12 miles south east. by kenhutson (Fri 27th Sep 2019 8:05am)
  • I’ll explain it to you. I’m saying that asking for Hamilton recommendations in the Glasgow sub is silly. It’s like asking for recommendations in any other sub that isn’t relevant to that area, like Canada. For example, would you go into the Lenzie sub and ask for recommendations for Cathcart? • This shows a fundamental misunderstanding of how human anatomy and physiology work. In order to get from the gut to the urine, something has to be absorbed from the gut into the blood first, and then filtered out of the blood again by the kidneys. If something is in the blood, it will travel to every part of the body, not just the urine. So the route that you suggest from the gut straight to the urine, bypassing the rest of the body, does not exist. I would also add that the more fat soluble something is, the more likely it will be stored in high concentrations in the body tissues (the fat). • No. If you need to see a GP you do not go to an emergency department. That is only for accidents and emergencies. You can see an out of hours GP if it’s urgent and you can’t wait until office hours. This can be arranged through NHS24. However, it doesn’t sound like you can’t wait, rather that it is just more convenient for you to go at that time, which is an abuse of the service. Your placement should give you time off if you need to see a GP in office hours, which is what you should do in this instance. by kenhutson (Fri 18th Oct 2019 10:13am)

You can’t just say a thing about one, without saying a qualifying thing about the other lest you offend someone. Even silly things like bbc sport writing a quiz on ex-Rangers players - they have to write one on ex-Celtic players too or else somebody will get upset. People can’t seem to disentangle the two in their minds. It’s quite annoying. One club can just be arseholes - you don’t have to mediate by saying the others are arseholes too. by kenhutson (Tue 5th Nov 2019 8:00am)

  • I’ve stayed in one before. It was October last year. It was cold. There was a fireplace in ours, and we kayaked in so we brought a good supply of firewood. I really enjoyed it. I would warn you of a few things though. They are very basic. Do not expect anything more than a stone floor to sleep on and a roof over your head. You’ll still need to bring warm clothes, sleeping bags, groundmats, torches/candles. Some of them have bunks or sleeping pallets made of wood but most don’t. There are no mattresses. There is no booking system. So there may be others there when you arrive. There may not be space for you. So you need to bring a tent just in case and be prepared to camp. They do not all have fireplaces or stoves, although most do. They do not all have nearby firewood. You should bring your own, or be prepared for a very cold night. I cannot stress enough that you should go as prepared as possible. You should have a map and compass and know how to use them. If you don’t find the bothy by dark, you might die. You should not treat this lightly. The wilderness in Scotland in winter is no joke. Sorry for the doom and gloom but I’m trying to keep you safe. If you find a good bothy and bring the right equipment and the right company you’ll have a great time. Sometimes people have left stuff for the next lot, so if you’re lucky you may find firewood, non-perishable food, even some whisky. It’s always nice to leave something for the next person. TAKE CARE OF THE PLACE, DON’T VANDALISE ANYTHING, AND CLEAR UP AFTER YOURSELF. Don’t leave litter behind. That’s a dick move. And please don’t shit near the bothy. Most have spades. Please dig a proper hole to shit in at least 100m away, not near any watercourses, and fill it in after you poo. I’m thinking of going myself this weekend. Hope you enjoy it. Stay out of the news lol! by kenhutson (Mon 11th Nov 2019 7:47pm)

  • I disagree that they are considered essential items. Certainly not for the people who frequent that shop anyway. What are you basing that on? by kenhutson (Tue 14th Apr 2020 10:37pm)
  • Well, we’re getting off topic now but yes I do reckon. I don’t know a lot about conservatism but I would imagine it’s a whole political ideology with nuanced opinions about a whole range of things, most of which have nothing to do with this discussion we’re having about a very specific topic. by kenhutson (Tue 14th Apr 2020 10:36pm)
  • I know what they are, but I don’t know where you’re getting that definition from. Is toilet paper an essential item? Is pasta? What does it mean to be an essential item? by kenhutson (Tue 14th Apr 2020 10:43pm)
  • So let’s take caviar or saffron as examples then. People pay exorbitantly for them because they are rare and in demand. Is that wrong? by kenhutson (Tue 14th Apr 2020 10:48pm)
  • Not that I’m advocating for the American model of healthcare, but one could say that medication is something that people need and shouldn’t be sold for excessive profit. But it is. Why is this not considered price gouging? Even in this country, the NHS buys equipment and medication from companies that make profit from them. Should these companies not make profit? What will be the incentive for them to make them at all, then? by kenhutson (Tue 14th Apr 2020 10:46pm)
  • No that sounds like too much work. So it is the sudden increase in price that makes it wrong? What about the exorbitant increases in the prices of iPhones over the last decade, way above inflation, secondary to increased desirability and therefore demand. Is that wrong? by kenhutson (Tue 14th Apr 2020 10:52pm)
  • I’m not comparing iphone 4 with iPhone 10 in terms of their current prices. I’m pointing out that each edition of the iPhone is becoming less affordable relative to the average salary. The global pandemic has created the demand for sure. Which has therefore put the price up. Which again just follows the usual rules of supply and demand which is not normally demonised in this way. For example, if I held shares in a company and some big unexpected announcement of a merger or whatever suddenly boosted the value of my shares nobody would complain. My shares would be more desirable, and therefore more valuable. I’d just be a lucky guy who held the shares at the right time and could profit from that. They would never have supported the Spanish republicans who had abolished the Spanish monarchy. • Not at all. You are as entitled to use the garden as the other tenants. And an infant in a paddling pool is a very reasonable use of the garden. I don’t think you need anybody’s permission. by kenhutson (Fri 29th May 2020 11:01am)
  • And if they refused permission? Do you just trot away with your tail between your legs despite the fact that you have a right to use it, quietly seething because you found out your neighbour is an arse? Or do you still go ahead and use it and all you’ve done is make things worse? by kenhutson (Fri 29th May 2020 12:59pm)
  • I wouldn’t be so sure they’ll say yes. They might say no and then what you gonna do? Not everybody loves kids, and some older people are actually really mean to them. If this was me, asking out of politeness when I know I have every right to use the garden, and they then said no, I’d be in an even worse position because I would still use it but now I’ve made it look like I’m doing it to spite them. by kenhutson (Fri 29th May 2020 12:57pm)
  • OP did say “should I ask if they mind”, which is de facto asking for permission. If I wanted to be polite, I would go around and inform them that I was going to use the garden. That way you’ve been considerate enough to do that, but haven’t asked permission (because of the problems stated above). That way they can raise concerns but you haven’t given them the right of veto by asking. by kenhutson (Fri 29th May 2020 1:17pm)

  • Ah. So they deliver? by kenhutson (Sun 21st Jun 2020 4:52pm)
  • I’ll answer as many of these as I can. Amazon is reliable. No problems with deliveries usually. There are no predators in the UK. Apart from farm animals the only large animals we have are deer. They generally run away when you approach, if you’re lucky enough to see them at all. We don’t have anything that will attack you really and nothing that is venomous either. There are plenty of parks and green spaces in Glasgow, but if you want to get lost in nature you’ll have to leave the city. If you have a car you can drive for 30 minutes in any direction and be in the countryside. The most desirable areas that aren’t too far from the city are the west end and the south side, generally. But come back here for more specific details once you’ve done a bit more reading in order to avoid the bad areas within these broader ones. There is excellent scuba diving in Scotland. But not really that near Glasgow. You’d have to travel for at least a couple of hours to the good stuff. Getting around Glasgow without a car is fine from about 6 am until about 11.30 pm. After that most trains and the subway stop and bus services become patchy. by kenhutson (Wed 24th Jun 2020 6:25pm)
  • No I didn’t. In order to keep the explanation short I just didn’t mention them. I’ve lived here for almost 35 years and never seen one so I think OP will probably get away with it. by kenhutson (Wed 24th Jun 2020 6:47pm)

  • As you have probably figured out by now, there are a lot of [wide](https://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=wide) bastards here as well. I feel you, OP. I once moved to a small town in Australia that I couldn’t find any information about so understand why you’re asking these questions. It’s just that Glaswegians are overly defensive when they perceive that someone is belittling them or their city. I once got downvoted tae fuck on this sub for saying something along the lines of “Glasgow isn’t the best city to move to - if you have the option, try somewhere else in Europe”. Glasgow is actually known for its friendliness. This sub is clearly just having a bad day today. by kenhutson (Wed 24th Jun 2020 10:51pm)

  • They’re used to accommodate peaks and troughs in gas usage. When usage falls, they expand and fill with gas. Then when gas use rises again they deflate. They’re needed because if you just had all the gas in metal pipes which don’t expand then you would have to exactly match supply with demand, which would be difficult if not impossible. This way the supply can be constant at gas co’s end. by kenhutson (Mon 10th Aug 2020 1:30am)

  • Unpopular opinion alert! Are you ready for it? Drug addicts cause a lot of damage, not just to themselves, but to those around them including their families/children and society in general. And by a lot of damage I mean absolute devastation. Now, I know there is a possibility that they can recover and make something of themselves... but realistically, how many of them actually do that? (That’s a genuine question, btw. I’m happy to be educated.) If they were prevented from overdosing, wouldn’t that just prolong the misery for them and everybody around them until they eventually succumb anyway? Discuss. by kenhutson (Tue 15th Sep 2020 7:14pm)

  • I wouldn’t say many. I’d say some. A minority get over their addictions. And I never mentioned tourists that was the other commenter. By absolute devastation I’m referring to the stress they cause their parents, the heartbreak when they hurt them again and again, but mostly the way they can mess up their children’s lives though neglect, etc. And the cycle continues. by kenhutson (Tue 15th Sep 2020 10:02pm)
  • You have no idea what my experience is. by kenhutson (Tue 15th Sep 2020 10:47pm)
  • Well then here is another question to ponder - is it our responsibility to help them? by kenhutson (Tue 15th Sep 2020 10:52pm)
  • You can put all the help and support you want in place, but if they don’t accept that help then there’s little that can be done for them. I see from another comment that you work with addicts. So you must know that many (not all but probably a majority) of them don’t take responsibility for improving their own situations. They have lived a dependant existence all their lives, with society giving them money, food, accommodation, allowing them not to work, and essentially facilitating their lifestyle. Until they can change that mindset, and take a lot of responsibility for improving their own situation, all the handouts and support in the world aren’t going to make a difference. You can lead a horse to water but you can’t make it drink. Now, of course they have had terrible experiences along the way which may have originally been outwith their control, but if they don’t now, as adults, attempt to take some control then you or I aren’t going to be able to cure them. by kenhutson (Tue 15th Sep 2020 11:19pm)
  • Drug addicts are “saved” in A&E every other weekend - it doesn’t change them. by kenhutson (Tue 15th Sep 2020 11:54pm)
  • Nicola? by kenhutson (Tue 15th Sep 2020 11:55pm)
  • So you’ve given 3 examples there. I disagree that “their logic follows exactly from [my] statement”. I don’t even think they are the same as each other, never mind mine, and I’ll address them in turn. Regarding executing serial killers - actively taking a life is not the same as allowing someone to die from lack of help. Maybe they’re similar, but there is a definite distinction. The example of cognitive disability is interesting. It’s quite a wide and inclusive description, but for example in Alzheimer’s I think there is a definite argument to be made about quality of life vs keeping people alive vs euthanasia. I’m not saying it’s my argument, but it is a valid one which should be considered and I wouldn’t rush into saying I disagree with it out of hand. It merits much fuller discussion. Your last example of feeding starving people is again quite a loose description. Generally starvation is a) not self inflicted and b) feeding is the quick and easy solution. I think comparisons to the situation a drug addict finds themselves in are weak at best. by kenhutson (Wed 16th Sep 2020 1:08am)
  • I don’t agree with you, but I respect that you thought it through. by kenhutson (Wed 16th Sep 2020 1:48am)
  • Failed by scotland? Why is it Scotland’s fault? That attitude is not helpful. The only way that addicts are going to recover is by taking some personal responsibility. Continuing to blame the country for their personal problems will see them stuck in the rut in perpetuity. by kenhutson (Wed 16th Sep 2020 8:54am)

Or if not, ask where do they get theirs? by kenhutson (Tue 22nd Sep 2020 8:31pm)
  • If your dog is so anxious that it can’t be off lead, and dogs being off lead around it makes it worse, then it’s your responsibility to avoid those areas. That’s like saying “I’ve got a peanut allergy so we should just ban peanuts” - eh, naw. by kenhutson (Mon 28th Sep 2020 11:59am)
  • No it isn’t. Surely if you have a wee dug you should expect to be able to have it walk around unmolested. And if it is attacked through no fault of its own, how is that the fault of the owner or the wee dug? Surely that’s the attacking dog’s fault. by kenhutson (Mon 28th Sep 2020 11:57am)
  • I completely agree with you. I don’t see how it’s the dog who got attacked’s fault or their owner’s. by kenhutson (Mon 28th Sep 2020 11:56am)
  • This is a victim blaming mentality. A dug should be able to be in a park without getting attacked by another dug. by kenhutson (Mon 28th Sep 2020 11:55am)

  • Was it my dog? It’s not like her. Dogs approach other dogs. It’s what they do. I wouldn’t say a dog going up to another dog for a wee sniff is “out of control”. If your dog is so sensitive, I would strongly urge you not to take it to places with other dogs. by kenhutson (Mon 28th Sep 2020 1:01pm)
  • We shouldn’t punish every dog just because a minority (your dog) have behavioural problems. That’s it in a nutshell. It’s like saying we shouldn’t allow people out of their houses after dark, because some of them are up to no good. Ridiculous stance to take. I’m sorry your dog has problems, but it’s not up to everybody else to accommodate them. by kenhutson (Mon 28th Sep 2020 2:20pm)
  • You are right - nothing will be done about it. It’s not a child protective services matter so I wouldn’t waste anyone’s time with it. by kenhutson (Tue 29th Sep 2020 1:48pm)
  • No, you can’t. Loads of parents don’t vaccinate their kids and it’s not something that should be reported to social services because it’s not against any laws. If it was treated as neglect, then doctors, nurses, etc could report it but they don’t cause it isn’t. Now, of course it can be argued that they are exposing their child to great risks which outweigh the risks of side effects from the vaccine - don’t think I’m apologising for them, because I’m not. P.S. he isn’t completely wrong about the aborted babies. Most vaccines are developed using stem cell lines which can be traced back to foetuses that were indeed aborted some decades ago. However, if this is a religious objection then the Catholic Church had [this](http://www.academyforlife.va/content/pav/en/the-academy/activity-academy/note-vaccini.html) to say about it. by kenhutson (Tue 29th Sep 2020 1:46pm)
  • Oro in shawlands is dynamite. by kenhutson (Tue 29th Sep 2020 1:51pm)
  • Reporting might be cathartic for you, but all you’ve done is waste someone’s time in a no doubt already busy department. Unless you have other concerns that the child is being mistreated. It’s frustrating as hell, but there’s not a lot you can do. by kenhutson (Tue 29th Sep 2020 1:57pm)
  • If you have genuine concerns about a child’s safety you should always report it. Even if you have no evidence. It’s not up to you to investigate - that’s somebody else’s role - and the risks of not reporting and the child coming to harm, however unlikely, are too great. Do what you think is right. by kenhutson (Tue 29th Sep 2020 2:01pm)
  • One could argue that, yes. But the fact is that in this country the actual risk of not vaccinating is low, because of the herd immunity provided by the rest of us vaccinated folk. In terms of whether it constitutes neglect necessitating social work referral, I can assure you that not vaccinating alone, in the absence of other concerns for the child’s wellbeing, will not interest the child protection team. by kenhutson (Tue 29th Sep 2020 3:15pm)
  • Agreed. The guy sounds like a nutter. If it wasn’t that it’d be something else. by kenhutson (Tue 29th Sep 2020 3:21pm)
  • There is some basis in truth. Aborted foetuses were used decades ago as the source for the stem cells which became the cultures that are still used to this day. Some people feel uneasy with benefitting from what they see as the murder of those babies. There are a few vaccines that aren’t made from these stem cell lineages though. by kenhutson (Tue 29th Sep 2020 3:20pm)
  • Spot on. I’m being downvoted for the truth. People don’t agree with the truth, though. I think maybe they think that I am supporting the parent, when all I’m pointing out is that social work won’t be interested. by kenhutson (Tue 29th Sep 2020 4:10pm)
  • Correct. The question is “what constitutes neglect?” by kenhutson (Tue 29th Sep 2020 5:22pm)
  • Listen, I am pro-vaccine so don’t think I’m not. But as somebody whose job sometimes requires me to make referrals to social work, I am only informing you of the reality - not vaccinating your kids is not a reason to refer. by kenhutson (Tue 29th Sep 2020 9:13pm)

Then took his record company guys to the bar she was working in so she could serve them drinks. The guy was a millionaire. He also took his parents out for their anniversary, and said he’d pay for the meal but they could split the cost of the drinks. The guy was a millionaire. Wank. by kenhutson (Wed 8th Sep 2021 9:14pm)

My advice to you, OP, is to get a lot of cheap second hand furniture, and then over the next year or two keep an eye out for stuff that you actually love, and buy it when you can afford it. Then you won’t feel bad about replacing the second hand stuff you already have. • This is a risky strategy. On the one hand some folk will want to leave them out so they don’t miss getting collected if the bin men happen to come back for an extra round the day after the strike ends. On the other hand, I think it’s more likely they will just come on the next usual collection day, by which time there will be up to 6 weeks of rubbish to get rid of. If you leave your bins out the neighbours will all be putting stuff in each other’s bins, filling yours up when you might need the space. Bin wars! Serious question is: does anyone know if they will put on extra collections to catch up on the ones that have been missed? by kenhutson (Tue 30th Aug 2022 9:26am)

This is what the house is actually worth, and what your mortgage will be based on. You see this when you request the home report from the estate agent. Depending on the area, and how many other people are interested, you might get it for anywhere from a few percent under to 20-30% over the home report value. by kenhutson (Tue 20th Sep 2022 11:13pm)

The discovery of the plot provoked a renewed wave of anti-Catholic sentiment in England. When 5th November was first celebrated, the effigy on top of the bonfire was of the pope. I always feel really guilty about it too. But I have noticed that delivery charges used to be about £2, whereas some restaurants are charging like £4-5 for delivery now. I hope that this is to make up for the lack of tips for the drivers but I’m not sure. by kenhutson (Fri 14th Oct 2022 2:59pm)

  • We got a dog before we had kids. Lived in a flat and both had full time jobs including night and weekend work. It was hard even between two of us. Had to always get back for the dog. No after work pints. Felt guilty about leaving again in the evenings so no more restaurant or cinema trips. No more going shopping all day and staying out for dinner. Had to stay in dog friendly hotels all the time which really limits the options. No trips abroad. Or else beg a family member or friend to take your dog for a week which is a big ask. Plus cause we were in a flat house training was hard and it took ages to get her to stop peeing in the flat - we never really did. It would have maybe been ok if we were able to take more than a couple of weeks off at a time to do it properly. Dog walkers cost about £2-300+ a month. Then there’s insurance which is about £15/month. Plus food, toys etc it all adds up to thousands of pounds a year. Then if somebody comes over who is allergic to dogs or scared of dogs that’s a problem. And in years to come if you host a children’s party there’s the constant worry that a kid will pull its tail and it will snap at them. It’s a huge commitment. If I was single I wouldn’t do it in a million years, and even when our current dog goes I maybe wouldn’t get another one cause it does lose you quite a lot more freedom than you think. by kenhutson (Wed 21st Dec 2022 6:17pm)

  • There is not a high risk of death from ADHD. You are deliberately conflating ADHD with more deadly conditions like depression, anxiety, psychosis under the umbrella term of mental illness. Apples and oranges. And if you are referring to forms of talking therapy such as CBT instead of medication, there is very good evidence that CBT can be as effective as medication for mild to moderate depression and anxiety, with far fewer side effects. News flash: your doctor actually knows what they are talking about! Patients recover quicker when they are actively involved in their own treatment, which CBT encourages, rather than passive involvement such as taking a pill daily. by kenhutson (Thu 12th Jan 2023 8:37pm)

  • Actually originally the term dinghied meant to be ostracised or ignored. The term originates from when a sailor would be ostracised by putting him in a dinghy and towing it behind the ship. Only later when dinghied became synonymous with ignored did it start to be used to refer to invitations rather than people themselves. If you dinghy an invitation, you ignore the person who sent it by not responding to them. You are really dinghying the person not the invite. Therefore if you give a flimsy reason for not accepting an invite you are actually not dinghying it - because you did respond. by kenhutson (Tue 14th Feb 2023 12:01am)

  • NHS have to consider cost effectiveness, as the money to pay for IVF comes out of the overall NHS budget. That means that they have fairly strict criteria in order to only spend money on populations they think have a decent chance of success. That means they have an age cutoff, among other criteria eg BMI below a certain level, non smokers, non drinkers, etc. However if you go private, they will be happy to flog that dead horse for as long as the money lasts. Occasionally that is successful too. by kenhutson (Fri 7th Apr 2023 9:57pm)

  • Glasgow is a great place, and I’m sure you’d have a good time. But it isn’t the easiest place to get out of if you wanted to do a bit of travelling in your spare time. Scotland is great and there’s lots to see, but over winter the weather is shit and everything closes outwith the big cities eg little museums and tourist attractions in the Highlands and Islands. If you have an opportunity to go somewhere in Europe like Germany, France, Italy, Austria, you’d find it a lot easier to get a train to lots of other countries to do some sightseeing. You can easily get to Prague, Budapest, Milan, Geneva, Amsterdam, Brussells, Paris, Berlin and loads more on the train from southern Germany for example. Just a thought if you have the money and time to do lots of weekend sightseeing and that’s what you want to do. It’d be better and easier from Europe. That said, you can still fly to quite a few countries from Edinburgh and Glasgow so it’s not like you’d be totally isolated. But your options for cheap flights are more limited than they used to be and a lot of routes no longer operate. If you do get to Glasgow I’m sure you’ll have a great time. I wouldn’t worry about getting a hard time off anyone - you’ll be grand. by kenhutson (Wed 9th Aug 2023 10:58pm)
  • It may surprise you to know that A&E stands for accident and emergency, not anything and everything. by kenhutson (Fri 11th Aug 2023 3:12pm)
  • Presumably the clinician who she already saw considered these possibilities and decided that this wasn’t the case, and then based on the information that they had decided that a decongestant spray and review in 5 days was an appropriate management plan. by kenhutson (Fri 11th Aug 2023 3:11pm)
  • I find your lack of faith disturbing. by kenhutson (Fri 11th Aug 2023 3:24pm)

  • It’s based on my experience of hundreds of thousands of interactions with colleagues over the years. They know what they are doing. I’m shocked you think so little of yours. by kenhutson (Fri 11th Aug 2023 3:53pm)
  • I just disagree is all. To catastrophise that every Eustachian tube dysfunction (which is the diagnosis here btw) could be a stroke and therefore merits a second and third opinion at several different emergency and non-emergency clinics is not helpful to anybody. You are causing anxiety and wasting time. by kenhutson (Fri 11th Aug 2023 4:04pm)
  • The GP has prescribed a decongestant spray, so presumably they do not think it is sensorineural hearing loss (as this treatment wouldn’t make any sense) and are treating it as conductive hearing loss. So unless you think that the GP doesn’t have this fairly basic knowledge, then your advice doesn’t apply here. by kenhutson (Fri 11th Aug 2023 4:55pm)
  • Be wary of people masquerading as ENT surgeons on Reddit, OP. GMC guidance states that if a doctor gives medical opinions on social media, [they should identify themselves by name](https://www.gmc-uk.org/-/media/documents/gmc-guidance-for-doctors---doctors-use-of-social-media_pdf-58833100.pdf). If he was following the advice of his own governing body he’d have done this. It’s suspicious that he hasn’t. It’s always better to see your own GP rather than be swayed by people who may or may not be who they say they are on Reddit, cause at least you know you’re getting correct advice. by kenhutson (Fri 11th Aug 2023 5:31pm)
  • I’d still be wary. Their advice seems sound, but we don’t really know if it’s correct. Whereas you do know that the GP you saw was a real GP. I’d be almost as wary of doctors who don’t follow their own governing body’s guidance as I would about fake ones tbh. by kenhutson (Fri 11th Aug 2023 5:44pm)
  • Dangerous to apply advice from various sources to your own case, because even if they sound similar there are differences between patients for whatever reason. Better to get advice from a real doctor who has assessed you personally i.e. see your own GP/ANP rather than some guy on the Internet. by kenhutson (Fri 11th Aug 2023 9:35pm)

  • The simple thing is to wait 30 mins. If you *absolutely* can’t do that, plan ahead. by kenhutson (Wed 16th Aug 2023 6:47pm)
  • People acting like 30 minutes is a long time is moronic. by kenhutson (Wed 16th Aug 2023 7:48pm)
  • And if you know you have plans, take the effort to plan ahead. That’s my point. If you are cutting it too close that the entirely predictable scenario of a queue at the ticket machine makes you miss your train, that’s entirely on you not the snarky person at central. by kenhutson (Wed 16th Aug 2023 7:59pm)

  • Tax evasion. What he is doing is not declaring earnings, which is evasion and illegal. Tax avoidance is legal. by kenhutson (Wed 23rd Aug 2023 12:48am)
  • You can avoid tax by various methods. Using offshore companies, paying yourself in dividends or tax free loans, running your income through a limited company instead of as PAYE, paying your spouse to use their tax free allowance as well as your own, etc. All of these are legal, some are more sketchy than others. They will reduce how much tax you pay on the income, but you still declare it and pay what’s due. Tax evasion is when you just don’t pay any tax when it’s due. by kenhutson (Wed 23rd Aug 2023 1:02am)

  • You’re comparing apples with oranges. We are talking about British police and you’re talking about other countries. by kenhutson (Fri 22nd Sep 2023 11:03am)
  • Well capitalism as a system is inherently unsustainable. It inevitably leads to oppression. I’m sorry if you thought I was saying that police only exist in capitalist countries. This is obviously not the case. However, the relation between police and capitalism is that whenever the status quo is threatened, and the balance of power or wealth is put at risk, police will be the first called upon to put down the protests of their fellow working class to protect the ruling classes. This is what I mean when I say they are class traitors. Look at the way that protests were handled during the coronation for a small example of what I mean. How do you think that would play out if there was a genuine desire among the population to get rid of the monarchy? by kenhutson (Fri 22nd Sep 2023 12:25pm)

  • There are various private gp services in Glasgow. Just google and contact them. by kenhutson (Wed 27th Sep 2023 2:38pm)
  • I don’t think the GP is “being difficult”. OP doesn’t even sound as though he knows what he’s asking for or why so it’s no wonder the GP doesn’t know what it is that he actually wants and is asking for clarification from the university. The GP isn’t psychic. by kenhutson (Wed 27th Sep 2023 2:49pm)
  • Not necessarily. Yes, patients could ask for a copy of their medical record and send that to the uni if they wanted. The letter is slightly different. This scenario is asking the GP to interpret the patients medical record for the university, and give their opinion as to whether this means OP is fit for the intended activity (studying abroad). The GP is therefore taking a risk by vouching for the patients health. If there was any dispute later (some health issue comes to light that was unknown), the GP could be asked about the contents of the letter. by kenhutson (Wed 27th Sep 2023 3:01pm)
  • They *are* interpreting the medical record, otherwise why not just send it wholesale to the uni? And unfortunately questions could still be asked if something else comes to light. Remember the doctor for the Glasgow bin lorry driver got grilled over his interactions with him, after he signed him as fit to drive based on the patient withholding information from him. That case showed that there is definitely a degree of risk in providing these letters. Providing letters such as these is not part of the general medical services (GMS) contract that the GP has with the NHS, so they are under no obligation to provide the letter. If they choose to do so, it is as a private service with a charge. by kenhutson (Wed 27th Sep 2023 3:32pm)

  • This isn’t the states. It’s not a private system. So reviews of GPs don’t reflect the quality of healthcare you receive. They are mostly just frustrated people having a moan about minor complaints. Remember that reviews are skewed because unhappy people are much more likely to leave a review. I’m many cases, these people are mentally ill or have some other long-standing beef with the practice. I have never seen a GP practice with a good overall rating for this reason. Ignore the reviews and sign up for the GP most convenient for you. If you don’t like them, it’s easy enough to transfer to another. by kenhutson (Tue 24th Oct 2023 7:40pm)

One seller wouldn’t let him up into the loft and seemed a bit evasive and he smelled a rat. The seller then ended up pulling the plug on the deal from their end. I think he probably saved me a lot of money. I would hire him again if I was buying an old house. by kenhutson (Mon 20th Nov 2023 10:38pm)
