  • ok I agree with you. Where I am from there are 2 types of "police" (spain) 1 type of police is your regular police. 2 type of police is called "city police" and they most focus on car infractions and antisocial infractions. By antisocial infractions I mean litter, noise, drinking in the streets, smoking weed,... all this type of things that you don't really want the "big police" to lose their time on. They don't go to violent crimes unless urgent help is needed. it is funny because in Spain we have 4 types of police: policia nacional (your regular police), civil guard (police run by the army, they cover places that the regular police cannot cover, and they also do a lot of work in forests, mountains and big operations against drug lords and things like that), local police (this is like the regular police but depends on the local government) and urban police (the number 2 I said, depends on the council). by the_phet (Mon 14th Jan 2019 2:25pm)

  • That's a classic sign of puberty and immaturity. I remember when I was 14 or 15 one of my best friends died (some liver problems he had during all his life). During the ceremony, I don't know why, I burst laughing. No idea why, just puberty, hormones, my body being incapable of handling all the feelings. Was I a psychopath because I was laughing during a kids burial? I don't think so. I don't know if it was that same night, or soon after, when I was alone in my bed I couldn't stop crying when I realized I couldn't be able to speak with my friend again. by the_phet (Thu 21st Mar 2019 3:27pm)

  • My recommendation for second hand car dealerships, is that you should try in a small garage, where they sell a few cars and you know that they fixed them. You pay a bit more, but it is more safe, and if the car breaks or something, you can bring it back (make sure this is in the contract). I mean places like this: https://www.thegreatwesternmotorcompany.co.uk/ in the west end by the_phet (Wed 27th Mar 2019 10:29am)
  • > Xtra and Sugar Free operate in the same space All the brands do the same. Coke Zero or Diet Coke. Pepsi Diet or Pepsi Max. The reason why they do it, it is because then Diet drinks appeared in the market, their taste was different to the original, while the Zero/Max is 0Kcal and trying to be as similar as possible to the original. While they overlap in terms of 0Kcal, because the taste is that different, they have a different market. by the_phet (Wed 27th Mar 2019 10:26am)
  • I dont recommend in particular that place - I have no idea about it, I have only seen it walking around - my suggestion is more general, try to aim for garages that are selling a few cars, instead of going to one of the big ones. by the_phet (Wed 27th Mar 2019 11:50am)

  • I dont see it wrong what is being described here, to be honest. If he has a central kitchen somewhere, where everything is prepared, and then this is sent and reheat in his own pubs,... I dont find that wrong - as long as they are doing their own food. Because when you order food in a restaurant, even in a 3 Michelin one, nothing is prepared from scratch, they already have everything ready. Let's say that they are serving pasta bolognese. The bolognese sauce was prepared hours before the dinning time, or even a previous day and then frozen. Otherwise it would be impossible to serve fast, and people don't want to wait. The pasta is probably cooked on the spot. The only difference with what GR does, is that they dont do it in their own kitchen, but in some central kitchen they have. Cooking in a restaurant is more about engineering the process and the costs than actual cooking. Spoons on the other hand, seems to be getting their food from some crappy catering service, and they are just reheating it. by the_phet (Thu 4th Apr 2019 3:52pm)
  • > I would suspect that most diners in a fancy restaurant would think that the food they ordered would have been prepared in the restaurants kitchen onsite. I don't really think that's important. I don't care if the food is prepared on-site or off-site, by them or by a 3rd company, as long as it is good and the quality of the product matches the price I am paying. One of the most difficult things of running a restaurant is finding good suppliers. For example, good bakers, or cake-makers, and so. Part of the money that you are paying to the chef goes to all that time the chef has invested researching the market. by the_phet (Thu 4th Apr 2019 5:38pm)

  • > It's just a reflection of the current Glasgow housing market. In other places or at other times it would be as you suggest. What I mean is not that other places are cheaper, but for example in this case, with the offers over 200 and home report at 215, perhaps the seller would put a fix price of 250, because that's what they want in their best scenario. If you pay 250 it is yours, otherwise you can try to get it bidding down. At least with those 250k you know where the seller is. Afaik mortatge is 90% of the home report value. • Thanks for your answer. The same house but number 12, in similar condition, sold for 195k 5 months ago. And now their home report is probably around 230k... by the_phet (Fri 10th May 2019 1:14pm)
  • I've asked for many home reports and usually they are 15k above offers over value. The valuation in the home report is the value the seller wants, which in most of the cases is a good value, but in some others it's not. In this case, for example, number 12 sold 5 months ago for 195k. Checking the pictures it's virtually the same house in similar condition. Where does the 230k from the home report comes from ? Adjusted to the drop in values it should be nearer 190k by the_phet (Fri 10th May 2019 1:11pm)
  • cheers that's a good point of view, probably they are not really keen to sell it. by the_phet (Fri 10th May 2019 2:41pm)
  • My question is more about the disparity between their Home Report, and what zoopla estimates their value, and the sold prices of similar houses in the same street. If their home report says 200k, but zoopla values it at 150k, and the next exact house was sold 5 months ago for 150k... by the_phet (Fri 10th May 2019 2:40pm)
  • that's true, although in the pictures it looked in a very similar condition, and 195k seemed to be the average price in that street. by the_phet (Fri 10th May 2019 3:07pm)
  • I would say their estimates are quite good, because they are based on recent sales. by the_phet (Fri 10th May 2019 3:07pm)

My flat doesn't have gas, therefore I use electricity for everything. I pay around 40£. The more expensive thing is the internet, I am with Royal Mail. I have been meaning to change for years, but I never done the step. I pay 30£ for Shitty 12mb DSL. Adding everything together it goes to 585 a month. • I am from Barcelona, a city that many people in Scotland seem to like. I am much happier in Glasgow, and Barcelona has gone down the toilet in the last 10 years or so. You said what's wrong with Glasgow, I will tell you what's wrong with Barcelona: The source of all its problems is tourism. Rent is going absolutely crazy with AirBNBs and people from other parts of the world wanting to live in a "cool city". Local business that give character to a city are gone, and are being replaced by "fake local business" or directly big coporation places. Eateries also went down the toilet. Food in Barcelona was amazing, now you either eat in a chinese place that tries to replicate spanish food, in a shitty place that serves frozen-to-microwave spanish food, or in a big corporation place. The city is also crammed, with a much higher density than Glasgow. The airport is good, but it's not like London, but big trips you still need to go to Amsterdam, London, Madrid,... (unless you want to spend a lot). Weather is good, but summer can be very hot and humid, I fucking hate it, I prefer a rainy day in Glasgow over a summer day in Barcelona, here I can still exist, in Barcelona I would be in the sofa, AC on, with all the limbs extended like a starfish. Warm weather is cool for a week, it's terrible during all your life, including working days. People in Barcelona were not amazing, we were a grumpy city, but it had its character and its sense of camaraderie, now it is just bullshit tourists and european foreigners and it just feels like any other city. I used to live in 1 street below sagrada familia, meaning that to take the subway I had to walk through a horde of tourists, I hated it. Every time I go back (3 or 4 times a year to see friends a family), it feels like a cheap theme park for tourists. Salary to cost ratio is much worse than in Glasgow. Something like a 80m2 OK flat in a OK area will go for 300K, at least. Flats in general are shoeboxes with thin walls and a lot of noise. I didn't realize how noisy it was until I went back. The only thing I can still say that it is amazing is public transport. I lived in Copenhagen for 3 years, and I could go on a similar rant. What I mean is that there's no perfect city. Every city has good and bad stuff. I am happy in Glasgow. by the_phet (Wed 5th Jun 2019 12:00pm)
  • My favourite pub is "Gallus". No idea if it is overrated or underrated. I used to go there a lot with workmates on Friday nights, and I always had a good time. I like the fact that it is decently big, with a lot of space to sit, and it is never super crowded. I would say around the Byres Rd area is the best one. Eventually my workmates decided to go to "Curlers Rest" because it is "cooler", and that basically killed our friday night drinks. Curlers is a shite pub. by the_phet (Mon 10th Jun 2019 11:44am)

Probably my favourite there is Toni, but I go a lot to little Italy because their take away 5 £ pizza deal with drink is really good. Zizzis in Ashton lane is also good. • I like Glasgow and Scotland (I have been living here for 7 years and I just bought a house), but something that I don't like is how little people seems to care about others. It's like people from Glasgow (or Scotland) are extremely friendly, or they don't give a fuck. As an example, something like a month ago I was walking alone around a forest area (very near Glasgow, not a very busy place, but you would meet someone every 5 minutes or so). I saw an old dog who looked tired and distressed. I followed the dog a bit thinking I would find their human around, but there was no one around. The dog saw me, so she started to move away from me - I think she was scared of me. I just tried to keep the dog away from the roads, and in the forest, while I phoned my wife for some help. Something like an hour later the owners of the dog appeared, and they were very happy to find her because she's been missing for hours. Anyway, during this hour or so I met quite a lot of people around, and they didn't give a fuck. I asked every one of them if that dog was their dog, and some of them were annoyed that I was speaking with them, some of them just said no and walk away. A couple stopped for like 20 seconds, patted the dog and kept walking. I wonder how many of them met the dog before I was there and just ignored it. You could think that they are lazy bastards and just thought "you are already helping, it's your problem", but it was quite obvious that I had no control over that dog, because she was just running away, and I needed some help to stop her. by the_phet (Thu 18th Jul 2019 2:36pm)

I also don't like the mixed environment it creates. At work we used to go to Gallus, which is probably my favourite pub. Decent prices, decent size, decent people. I had a lot of great nights there. Eventually some of my workmates decided to go to Curlers rest because "it is more cool", "gallus is for old people" and that kind of shite. • I am from Spain. The reason why we have big bins shared between several buildings is because it can get very hot here, and that's bad for rubbish, and the smell can be terrible. In Barcelona (where I am from) if a summer night you approach a group of these bins before they are collected, the smell can be terrible. In Glasgow this problem doesn't exist because I guess temperatures are low enough to keep the rubbish from generating bacteria or whatever. If you are just walking around, you are not supposed to throw your rubbish there, although of course you can. There are baskets everywhere where you can throw your stuff. They look like this: https://www.urbadep.com/product/papelera-barcelona/ Obviously this system requires rubbish to be collected every day, and this is more expensive for the council, and for some reason people in the UK is very against spending public money on stuff like this, so in Glasgow the rubbish is collected every 2 weeks. Also, because those bins are in the street, they are in strategic places where the rubbish truck can easily go, and with an automated system, dispose them. They don't need to go inside the close or anything like that. Also, streets are cleaned EVERY NIGHT. Every city or town has small vans like this which clean the streets: https://farm7.static.flickr.com/6211/6245998808_c2a4e7dedc_b.jpg There's also people going around with high pressure water mixed with some cleaning products, and they go around quite a lot. It is quite annoying coming back home at night, drunk, and having to stop while they clean the streets. by the_phet (Thu 1st Aug 2019 10:12am)
  • > Spanish minimum wage is substantially lower than the UK, so local administrations can afford more workers. Minimum wage in Spain is 1050e while in the UK it is 1500e (data from Google). But the GDP per capita in the UK is $39k while in Spain it is $28k. Both the difference in salaries and in GDP is the same, a 70%, which means that both countries are paying the same if we compare how much money they have. But for example the UK has 0 hour contracts, which Spain doesn't have. I don't think it is related to money or salaries. > Touristy place Many places in Spain have 0 tourists and they have the same system. > 3. Recently we were there when the fire alarm went off, and a staffer also waiting for the bus went 'follow me, it's about 90 seconds slower just to walk it'. The problem is that if you are carrying bags, it is better just to take the bus. by the_phet (Thu 1st Aug 2019 4:15pm)
  • Buses are not the solution. They are very slow because they go through traffic and they stop at every stop. They pollute a lot. In many stops you only have like 2 and hour. In Glasgow everything is centralised around the city centre. Going from the west end to many places in the southside or east requires to change buses, which is crazy and very time consuming. While changing trams is usually much faster. I think Glasgow really needs either more subway lines or more train / trams. Buses are from the past. by the_phet (Fri 2nd Aug 2019 10:22pm)

What I did was to go to a very quiet place with my wife (who has a license) and then I drove around 2 roundabouts going from 3 to 2 to 3 and all that. Then I would stop, go to 1st, and all that. Just a very small circuit where I had to change gears every 30 seconds or so. This helped me a lot. After a few days doing this it just becomes muscle memory, and it is much easier. I advise against going automatic, because you won't fail for not having a smooth change of gears, and then if you pass automatic you can only drive automatic. My general advice would be find someone who is close to you, go to a quiet place, and hit a lot of hours. And then get an instructor for more dangerous places. by the_phet (Mon 2nd Sep 2019 12:50pm)

  • In theory, in any crossing, you should march in, and the car should stop. Cars ignore this, because they can go way faster than you. A zebra crossing makes it more obvious. And will also mean fines for drivers that don't respect them. by the_phet (Wed 16th Oct 2019 2:06pm)
  • > (Hyndland St/Dumbarton Road isn't a crossing, btw. I don't know what's making people think it is.) This is not true. Every intersection between 2 streets is a crossing. The problem is that in Glasgow this is terribly marked. • > Then, when learning to drive I was taught to NEVER give way to pedestrians unless they are already crossing. There's a massive safety reason for this. It's way, way more dangerous to yield in some situations. This is 100% wrong, and I am surprised you were told to do this, or you managed to pass your test. For example, you can see here the length of sunrise/sunset in Quito Ecuador (the shortest): https://www.timeanddate.com/sun/ecuador/quito It is difficult to say from the plot, but each twilight lasts around 1h based on the numbers below. This is really really fast. While in Glasgow https://www.timeanddate.com/sun/uk/glasgow changes a lot through the year, but the minimum is already more than 2h. by the_phet (Thu 31st Oct 2019 9:54am)

  • I am not getting a 50% discount. It's tax money that goes out of my pocket. Considering I haven't gone out yet to use this eat out thing, I am clearly at a tax-money lose. If the restaurant was offering a 50% discount then it'd be different, but that's not this case. I have been out with big groups and I have never seen a 30 tip for a group of 9. Never. Maybe in USA that's normal but I have never seen anything like that in UK or EU. by the_phet (Wed 12th Aug 2020 9:50am)
  • It depends. If it's a set menu they I pay together. But otherwise, because I rarely drink, if I have a sandwich and a can of coke, and someone else had main dessert and 2 beers, obviously I am not going to pay for their lunch. And when I do that, and in a group I go mental, I make sure that I pay my part, I don't expect to offload my cost into others. That's just being a twat. And it's not about being fun, it's knowing where that 50% is coming from. It's not coming from Boris. It's not coming from the restaurants, which as we are seeing in this post, they are using it to scam. It's coming from our pockets. No idea how old you are, but if you pay taxes and you see every month a good chunk of your salary going away, you understand what I mean. I am not against paying taxes btw, we should pay more. But it's also important to know where the money it's coming from - and that's us. by the_phet (Wed 12th Aug 2020 1:07pm)

When we bought a house, we had a range in mind. Let's say 100k to 150k. Just by the way the search engines work, houses with "offers over 95k" did not appear in my results. What's better for that house, to get visits from people who would be stretching their budget because their max is 100 (and it was oo 95 and hr of 120) or visits from people whos max was 150? by the_phet (Thu 10th Sep 2020 3:33pm)
  • I bought a house a year ago, and the way it works in Scotland is terrible. It's unnecessarily stressful and anti-buyers. In Spain, where I am from, the seller puts the price they want for the house. That's the max price, their dream price. If you pay that, then it's yours. Otherwise it's a bid to the bottom to see who puts the value nearer to the max price. I think it's way fairer to the buyers, and I don't think the sellers are getting any less. In Spain the price is set by the seller or the state agent. In Scotland the Home Report is placed by an independent third party (lol). This makes no sense. In Scotland as you all know you have the "offers over" which is meaningless, and then the home report. I think the way it goes over or under the HR heavily depends on the area. Saying that "it's HR+10%" only applies really to a few areas of Glasgow. In my case, we bought out house for exactly the HR value. I heavily disagree with the idea that the current system benefits sellers. I don't think it does at all. Considering how the price of properties is going up all around Spain and specially in the big cities (ignoring covid) I think it just creates a healthier environment. I just think it makes it more complex and stressful, and I think this has a negative hit to the final price. Of course top flats in the West End are going to increase in price, but is the current system really helping the areas which are not as "trendy"? Do you think think there will be a bid war in castlemilk? by the_phet (Thu 10th Sep 2020 3:31pm)
  • Not everyone. Not us. We knew what our salaries is, and how much we wanted our mortgage to be, and that's what we wanted to pay. Maybe I live in a strange bubble but most home-buyers back then I spoke with seemed to have a similar guideline to us. by the_phet (Thu 10th Sep 2020 3:47pm)

  • weather is stable when it's hot or cold, and it's unstable when the temperature change. As the sun goes up, it heats up, it starts to become unstable until it goes bad. Then it plateaus. I'd pick Messi or CR7 over any of them. Ronaldinho and Maradona liked partying too much. Ronaldo had massive injures. His season in Barcelona was incredible. Like Messi on his peak. Sadly, he broke soon after. I'd also put in the top Cruyff. by the_phet (Thu 26th Nov 2020 9:58am)
  • Maradona has the best "peak", Messi has the best career/body of work. What makes Messi the best is his consistency, year after year. if you need someone for pure peak performance for 10 games, that's maradona. If you need someone to lead your team for 10 years, you pick messi. I'd say the main difference between them is the attitude towards football. Maradona liked partying (and drugs) too much, while Messi is 100% football focused. by the_phet (Thu 26th Nov 2020 9:56am)

  • Of course there are Catholics in England, but Google says that around 30 million people belong to the "church of England" while only 4 million are Catholics. The thing is that King James was a Scottish king (born in England but from Scottish lineage), and he was dethroned by William of Orange (from the Netherlands). And then we have Bonnie Prince Charles who was trying to be king through King James lineage and started this revolution in Scotland. I'm sure you know all this. The thing is that a Catholic Scottish king was replaced with a Protestant Dutch one. So the orange walk are a "fuck you" to Catholic Scottish people. Of course this wouldn't make any sense in England. There's something strange that happens with the Britishness of certain people in Scotland. I guess because they are "far away" they want to be more Brit than the queen. It's like when you see Americans speaking about the Scottish lineage. by the_phet (Sun 19th Sep 2021 3:09pm)

  • It's sort of interesting because as you know Lidl started in Germany. Lidls in Germany are rough. They don't even shelve the items but they leave the boxes and you need to open it like an orc. It is supposed to be a super cheap supermarket. Aldi is similar. Old Lidls and Aldis everywhere in Europe are like that. Rough and cheap. For some reason it seems that the british people want the illusion of shopping in a Waitrose but with cheap prices. So newer (or refurbished) Lidls and Aldis have been changed to look more decent and high end. If you go anywhere in EU, Lidls are still rought. But in the UK they try to look high end. I do love the old "rough" Lidl aesthetic. Just rows of metal cages with half opened boxes. by the_phet (Mon 28th Feb 2022 9:07am)
  • I am Catalan myself (like Dali) living in Glasgow (like the painting). The answer is NO. It is an amazing piece of art, free to see for everyone. If you sell it, it will be bought by some arab or russian oligarch who just wants to make an investment, and it would be hidden in some basement. The only way I would approve for it to be sold is if it went to Dalis museum in Figueres. But this will never happen because they dont have that type of cash. What the GMB suggests is idiotic and very short term. This piece of art is an amazing investment and it will only go up in value. Sell it now to pay for the money now. Next time the GCC runs on deficit what you sell? It's also free and a major attraction for the museum. You can rent it now to other museums to get cash too. by the_phet (Mon 28th Feb 2022 12:46pm)

Prices in Glasgow can easily double this. And quality is also lower. Spain is "lucky" because you can easily grow weed everywhere, and it's also the cocaine entry point to Europe. Don't do drugs and save money. by the_phet (Mon 11th Apr 2022 10:35am)
  • weed in Spain is much better than here by the_phet (Mon 11th Apr 2022 12:46pm)
  • I doubt it. In Spain you can grow weed outside easily (you can't in Scotland). Spain is warm and sunny. Outdoors is also much better than indoors. This means anyone who wants can have a few plants. Thus, you can get any seeds, as powerful as you want, and plant them. Because there's so much supply, competition is fierce, and you need to offer the best and cheapest product. As someone else said, there are for example legal cannavis clubs. It is a completely different ball game. It is like comparing scottish whisky with spanish whisky. Weed in scotland is either low quality indoors, or exported and dried, from somewhere else. Demand here is much higher than the supply, so they can sell whatever they want. by the_phet (Mon 11th Apr 2022 1:35pm)

Google says that someone earning 30k a year takes home almost 2k. So 4 years ago, someone making 30k with let's say 20k saved, could borrow 180k for 25 years and pay around 850 a month (850 over 2000 is very feasible) and get a house where I live. by the_phet (Tue 24th May 2022 9:33am)
  • As far as I know, Uber drivers don't get surge rates. by the_phet (Sun 29th May 2022 9:02am)
  • Thank for the excellent explanation. Just two things about Uber : Drivers don't get the surge payment. They don't know how much the client pays. They see what Uber offers them and they take it or not. I think until very recently they didn't even see the destination. Uber bids between drivers to pay them as little as possible. It really sucks and that's why many of them now do deliveries. Uber drivers don't like long trips. This is related to the previous point. They prefer a lot of short trips. Uber drivers prefer to move people from the west end to city center, or southside. They want to end a trip and pick new people. They don't want dead trips. I live in cambuslang and Uber drivers never take the trip. by the_phet (Sun 29th May 2022 9:01am)
  • They get a bit of extra money, but this is very far away from what the user pays. If the surge is x2, they don't get double. This extra money can be as little as 1$ (or pound). Uber doesnt take a percentage of the fare. Check the following picture, taken from a Uber driver: https://imgur.com/gallery/OmELzVw You can get more information here: https://www.reddit.com/r/uber/comments/na6ru3/are_uber_drivers_still_being_paid_for_surge_fares/ For example: "The simple answer is to understand what riders see as a "surge" and what drivers see as a "surge" are disconnected. You may pay $10 more than usual, driver gets 5, or 2, or maybe nothing of that extra $10 you paid as a "surge". Uber is not only the market maker, they are the market manipulator. Drivers have no input on pricing. " "I had an Uber Premier trip for 6 miles where the passenger paid $100. I got a fixed $5 surge bonus and time and distance which came to a total of $20. Uber keeps the rest. What a passenger pays and what the driver receive are not at all related. " by the_phet (Sun 29th May 2022 10:04am)

The local student studying in Belgium (for example) is payed using EU funds, while the German student studying in Glasgow is also payed by EU funds. Now this option doesn't exist for local students. Thus, while Chinese students pay full fees, the ScotGov also pays the smaller fees of local students, so the offset is not as good as before. by the_phet (Mon 6th Jun 2022 4:10pm)

Interest rates go up and it is more difficult to buy. Also if you buy a property, and the market continues to under-perform, you are losing equity. • You can check zoopla, and check for similar properties in the same area to get an idea. by the_phet (Mon 11th Jul 2022 1:50pm)
  • You are ignoring the fact that the value of properties in the 50s-early 90s was a fraction of what it is today. Mortgages were also smaller, way smaller. The risk thus was very small. In the 70s the average property in Scotland was valued at 3k, in the 80s 15k, and in 1990 35k. Today it is 250K. So obviously if the price of something you own is just 3k, and it goes down a 7%, it's a small change, or if it stagnates. The problem now is that people have mortgages over 200k, with 2 people paying a chunk of their salary. If the house market crashes badly, the property are not the houses but the people paying them. by the_phet (Mon 11th Jul 2022 2:02pm)

If that were to happen, then inflation would go even higher, and more people in low salary jobs would be left behind. What's the solution? IMO nationalisation of key industries, and capping the prices. If prices of energy go up, and you increase the pay of public workers, then basically you are giving to the energy CEOs tax money to increase their profits. The solution is not for the government to pay the difference between what we can pay and what they want, but to limit what they want. by the_phet (Wed 24th Aug 2022 9:47am)

  • Spanish olive oil >> Italian by the_phet (Fri 7th Oct 2022 6:28am)
  • Agree. Tunisian is also very good. Romans (as in the roman empire) used to get most of their oil from Spain. Italian olive oil basically lives off the name. It is the classic product with high reputation that they can sell low quality stuff and people still buy it. I am sure there's good Italian olive oil, but I doubt that one gets to Scotland. The way the EU works is that every country has a quota for products. Since Italy was part of the EU before Spain and Greece, Italy set the leading quota. Italy oil production is actually low compared to Spain. Most if not all of the olive oil produced in Italy is consumed inside Italy. What happens is that Spain produces way more (around 40% of worldwide production) (and better quality), especially they produce more olive oil than what they can produce, but they don't have a high EU quota. So most of Spanish olive oil is sold for cheap to Italy, bottled there and sold as Italian. Because there are many farmers doing this, they give a fuck about the quality. Olive oil in Spain is a bit like wine, there are different grapes with different flavours. It is not a general standard product. Depending on where it comes from, it can be quite different. Olive oil from Tarragona is quite different to Jaen, for example. It also depends on the processing. it is not the same extra virgin olive oil, than regular olive oil. And it also depends how you use it. Regular olive oil is good for cooking, extra virgin is not (lower gas point, burns, worse taste when cooked). I cringe when I see people cooking (frying) with evo olive oil. There's nothing better than a bit of toasted bread, with a bit of garlic and olive oil. source: love olive oil. by the_phet (Fri 7th Oct 2022 9:37am)
  • Those who really want good olive oil, I highly suggest you buy Spanish one. Remember, the Roman empire used olive oil from Spain, not from Italy! What I suggest you do is that you google for "cooperativa aceite oliva". "aceite oliva" is olive oil in Spanish. "cooperative" is just a coop. Most farmers in Spain work in coops. You will find plenty of Spanish olive oils selling high quality oil. This is the real shit direct from the farmers, not processed by Lidl or Tesco re-sellers or whatever. Searching for those keywords, for example my first result is: https://www.jaencoop.com/en/acceso-tienda/ (Jaen is a great area for olive oil, like Speyside for whisky). You will find different products at different qualities. You will find for example https://www.jaencoop.com/en/tienda/cazorliva-familiar-garrafa-pet-5l/ This is 15L of really good olive oil from a coop for 68 euros (around 60 pounds). So around 4 pounds per liter, which is really good for this very high quality product. There are very similar coops, for example https://www.arbequina.coop/en/buy/aceite/tradicional/extra-virgin-olive-oil-natural-arbequina-bottle-5l/ In these websites you can also buy smaller quantities, or more unique/higher end products. But these 5L bottles destroy anything you can buy in a supermarket here. It is like comparing a 12 yo whisky from Scotland vs some cheap blend. Spending 60-100 pounds in olive oil might seem like a big investment, but it will last you a lot. In my house we use a 5L in a year. So if you were to buy 3x5L for 60, that would last around 3 years. Not that bad. by the_phet (Fri 7th Oct 2022 9:47am)

  • Glasgow is not that cheap though. Compared to London or Cambridge ? Yeah. Compared to Liverpool or Birmingham? No. by the_phet (Wed 12th Oct 2022 8:04pm)
  • With interest rates at 6% prices will go down and fast, 100%. As an example for a mortgage of 200k for 25 years: - at 3% (not long ago) you paid 950 a month. The total cost was 285k. - at 6% (now) you will pay 1290 a month. The total cost is 386k. When people start the process of buying a property, the first thing they do is to see how much they can pay per month for the mortgage. Let's say a family calculates that they can pay 1000 a month, then at 3% they could aim for a total mortgage of 200k. Now a 6%, if they want to pay 1000 a month, the total mortgage would be 150k. So basically their purchasing power will be 50k than 2 months ago. Instead of checking around the West End or Southside, they will check the East End. But as they do that, many will do the same, decreasing the market in premium areas, and the only solution for them if they want to sell is to lower the prices. Add to the equation all the people who will need to remortgage and suddenly won't be able of paying the new monthly payments. More houses in the market. by the_phet (Thu 13th Oct 2022 10:38am)
  • First time buyers won't go nearer their limit in the current situation. That would be mad. Mortgage rates are now 6%. Some predict it might even go to 10%. First time buyers will go for cheaper properties. Which means the market for more expensive properties will be lower, way lower. There will be more demand for properties around 100k while the demand for properties around 200k or higher will be minimal. by the_phet (Thu 13th Oct 2022 12:14pm)

  • I think what the previous person suggested is sound advice. I am 37 now, and when I was around 18 I joined a proper running club. I was really good at long distance running. My aim was to do Marathons. My PR for 10km was around 40m, and that was not my best distance. Anyway I started when I was around 18, when I was around 24 I started to have knee problems. Nothing really happened, it is just that my body was not perfectly aligned and prepared to run 40-60km a week. I went to a physio, bought prosthetic insoles and continued pushing (although my times dropped dramatically, I think my last measured 10km was 45m). A few years later when I was 30 or so, I started to have problems on my hip. I went to the GP, physio, MRI, just wear and tear, nothing I could do. I am 37 now, and my body suffers from having tried to be a semi-pro runner. My legs are in constant pain, same with the hip and my back. I still run twice a week because I love it, but my times are terrible, and I even need to walk for portions of it. Not because I am tired but because my legs are in pain. I remember listening to a podcast by a guy who is one of the top leading ACL surgeons. He said something like 90% of his customers are average runners with massive knee problems. He 100% adviced against running, especially if you are running over a hard surface (concrete, pavement, even more cross country paths are hard). If you want to get fit and lose weight, the best sports are swimming, cyclcing, weight lifting, stuff like that. Running is not recommended. I am not a doctor btw. Just someone who has had problems with running, and I hope to avoid others having them. I have many friends or people I know who are also "runners", and we all have the same problems. Sometimes when stretching I chat with another runner (who I dont know but just happens to be there) and the chat always evolves to knee/hip problems. by the_phet (Thu 20th Oct 2022 9:26am)
  • I don't think no one sane in 2022 recommends running to lose weight and get fit. Running is good because it is cheap, easy to do, feels good, you go outside and run. Perhaps the easiest sport to do. On the other hand it is bad for your knees, hip and back. Running means a constant impact on these joints. Long term this is not good. Cycling, swimming or gym is much better and safer. by the_phet (Thu 20th Oct 2022 1:37pm)

  • I think a problem with Tchai-Ovna is that it featured in some guide for tourism. The place is very small and already filled with locals, so it cannot really cope with tourists. Last time I was there (August), there were 2 tables with tourists. In one of the tables there was a french couple (old people). They ordered something, and waited for a while. The guy went to complain, and they got served their coffee soon after. The guy drank it in 1 minute, and they left. In the other table there was a group of tourists who seemed to be italian perhaps. 4/5 women in their 30s or 40s, being very noisy and speaking over the music. Those 2 tables sort of killed the vibe for me. I go to Tchai Ovna (like 2 or 3 times a year) to relax and have tea. Most people is always very chilled. by the_phet (Tue 22nd Nov 2022 5:03pm)

  • > Edinburgh - our city has become an investment portfolio for rich folk Sadly Glasgow is becoming the same. A spillover from Edinburgh/London. It is now one of the most expensive cities in the UK. by the_phet (Mon 12th Dec 2022 9:21am)
  • > More complex than that but that is part of the story. It is more complex yeah. The problem is that Glasgow has a reputation of being a cheap city going up in quality. You can see a lot of people saying the same here. So a lot of investors see it as a good investment (you want to buy cheap, and hope it goes up in price). The reality is that since Covid Glasgow is getting very expensive (5th more expensive city in the UK over many others like Manchester, Liverpool, Cardiff) and it is going down in quality, very strongly related with the GCC. by the_phet (Mon 12th Dec 2022 10:55am)

This is 100% absolute pedantic and wanky bullshit. I love good food. I cook myself a lot (and I mean nice meals done from scratch). I also like going out to high end restaurants (I was a few weeks ago in Crossbasket castle). That said, I also love Nandos, Wagamama, ... One of my best friends is a big boss in Generali (one of the biggest insurance companies in the world). The guy is loaded, has been to many 3* Michelin restaurants and has been invited to very high end places. I have been with him to expensive and cheap&chain places, and he loves them equally. There is a time and a place for everything. As you get older you develop this experience. We all go through the edgy phase of rejecting Nandos & Co. • The greed of UoG is breaking the city. I live outside Glasgow (South Lanarkshire), and this year walking the dog I have met students who moved to my area because it was impossible to find flats (or houses) in Glasgow. Of course this means that if more students come to my area, locals will be kicked out. I think the UoG should move its campus outside the city. Keep the old building (not so old really, since it is fake old) in the West End, but make a new Campus outside the city. And also create there student dorms. This is how most unis in Europe are. And in Edinburgh it is a bit like that. Years ago Heriot Watt moved from the City to the outside. by the_phet (Sat 31st Dec 2022 5:15pm)

  • I wonder if anyone can help me buying a car. I don't know much about cars. Last month I bought an Honda Jazz (through facebook). MOTs were very clean, I thought car was solid, I paid 1450. Monday I took it to the mechanics for a test, and it was all corroded underneath, to a point that mechanic said there's no way it'd pass next MOT. So I sold it for a lose (for 800, I sold it elsewhere not to that mechanic). Once I save some money, I want to try again and buy another car. I would really appreciate if someone who knows about cars can come with me just to see there's nothing super wrong with the car (like what just happened to me). I understand old cars has problems and all of that, but I don't want to lose 800 pounds again in 1 month. It's pretty brutal. by the_phet (Wed 5th Apr 2023 4:30pm)
  • What do you mean EVs will last longer? Do you mean they have longer lives than petrol cars? Because this is not true. EV cars have a life limit of around 8 years, at which point you need to replace the battery, which will cost you around 10k. The main car killer in the uk is rust and corrosion, and it's the main reason why cars are scrapped. Rust affects equally ev and petrol cars . While it's true that mechanically ev cars are simpler, any petrol car built in the last 20 years is bomb proof, except for the rust. by the_phet (Wed 12th Apr 2023 6:50am)

  • I am sure most people know this, but one of the main reasons they do cash only is to launder money, not really avoiding taxes. Cash only it's not to avoid VAT and bank's cut. If you do cash only there's no registry or log book about the jobs you did. Only the taxi driver knows, and they makes sure to not keep a log. Pricing is also at their own discretion. Why? Because then they can claim they did whatever money they wanted, and drug lords and related scum use this to launder money. The drug lord goes to the taxi driver and ask, how much money you can put in? taxi driver says maybe one grand (for a night, a Saturday, could be). Taxi driver takes a small cut of that, and now the drug lord has his nice legal money. Of course just 1 taxi driver is not going to make a difference, but if you have 30-40 (or more) doing this for you, you can get through 30-40k a night. by the_phet (Sun 30th Apr 2023 11:30am)

  • I am also a foreigner. I am not from the UK. But it is the strategy from the university, instead of rising salaries, it is better to hire people from the outside who are OK taking lower salaries. If you ask a lot of people from the UK with PhDs or post-doc experience, and you ask them if they would like to pursue a career in academia, many will tell you that no because salaries are low. This can be apply to many other jobs. I don't think that by saying that big business and big capital bring in cheap labour to keep the salaries down I am a racist. The problem here is not the cheap labour, but the people using this strategy. In any case you can call me anti-globalisation or anti-capitalism, which I am. by the_phet (Mon 3rd Jul 2023 3:33pm)

I missed some opportunities to see cars because I couldn't get there in time (I have no car), and the car market is filled with flippers searching for all those good opportunities. Both cars had very good MOT histories. Although I know now it means nothing. by the_phet (Sun 30th Jul 2023 10:18am)
  • First one was a Honda Jazz from 2010. When I bought it the MOT was in 5 months. I drove it for 1 month and I loved it. I took it for a service, and the mechanic told me the underneath was badly rotten and that it'd never pass the next MOT. I saw it with him and you could make holes in the frame with your finger. I sold it that day and I lost 600. I could have kept it until its MOT, but I preferred to get rid of it and get as much as possible. This is 100% my fault for not checking underneath the car. But I just don't know about cars. The second car is a Skoda Fabia also from 2010. I still have this car, but it won't start. It seems the timing chain slipped. I used the car like 4 or 5 times. I've contacted a few mechanics in my area and all of them quoted me around 1.2k to 1.5k to repair it. That's what I paid for the car so I will scrap it. The car also needs 4 new tyres and the tracking done, and the exhaust back box will need some repairs soon because it's been MOT as advisory twice already. I knew about tyres + Backbox when I bought it, so I factored it to get this done. But the 1.5k from the timing chain I didnt expect. if I do all the jobs that'd easily be 2.5k just in repairs. So I think I will scrap it. by the_phet (Sun 30th Jul 2023 10:16am)
  • If I had known the timing chain needed to be serviced, I would have done it. But I think because it slipped it bent the valves, and who knows what happened with the cylinders. I really never got to drive it much. My plan was to do a service asap but I never had the chance. I remember researching about these Skodas (especially in their forum BriSkoda - MK2 fabias), and it was mostly saying that the timing chain problems are more related to the diesel engines, that the HTP 1.2 is "bombproof". by the_phet (Sun 30th Jul 2023 10:42am)

  • I know the woman you mean I think. She is (pardon my words) cancer. Sometimes I need to buy the ticket in Central after stepping out of the train (as you did) and the queue to buy a ticket from her are huge. Meaning so many people will get late to work. When I get into the line to buy the ticket and I see is her, I know I will get late. It makes me very angry. She is on a power trip thinking she is running some sort of inquisition. She does the same bullshit she did with you with almost everyone. I remember once the guy in front of me was under her scrutiny for like 5 minutes. She should just sell the fucking tickets and shut up. And if she cannot sell the tickets without being a dick, she should be moved to some other job within Scotrail. The thing she did with you selling the wrong ticket, I've seen her doing that many times. Because while in line I can see people coming back again and complaining about that. by the_phet (Wed 16th Aug 2023 7:55pm)

Perhaps covid, or perhaps SNP in the GCC, or perhaps the big lawsuit. I go through the city centre a lot and it is just dirty, manky, closed shops, dodgy people, too many delivery guys, too many cars (although this has always been a problem). Sauchiehall street also went downhill really fast. The different fires plus the refurbishment they did. So many closed shops, M/S went away, ... • I am from Spain, living in Scotland. The system is the same, but different. In Spain they will set a very high price, way over market, their dream price. People will bid nearer to that price. If you pay their price then it is yours, but most people bid below it. Whoever offers the most, gets it. In Scotland as you know the price set is lower than the market value. And buyers offer over asking price. Whoever offers the most, gets it. I think both systems result in very similar prices. Consider Facebook marketplace and Ebay. Facebook is like Spain where people sets a price and you offer them something lower. Ebay is like Scotland. I would say both platforms offer similar prices. by the_phet (Thu 12th Oct 2023 9:29am)
  • > A price is advertised, that's the price the seller will sell the property for. This is true but not exactly true. If your target price is 100k, you won't advertise it for 100k, you will advertise it for perhaps 130k, and then hope someone offers you your target price is something even higher. No one sets a price similar to the target price, because people will lowball you by default. This is similar to the used car market. If someone wants to sell a car in Gumtree for 2k, they wont put the car for 2k. It is also a "blind" system in the sense that you don't know what was the minimum the seller was willing to accept. Maybe the person put the car for 2.5k, and you offered 2.2k and seller took it. What you didn't know is that the seller was willing to accept 2k. It is the same with houses. by the_phet (Thu 12th Oct 2023 9:34am)
  • You don't know what the target price is though. Think about the used car market situation. Someone is selling a car for 3k, which you know it is clearly overpriced, so you know the seller has another price in mind, but you have no idea. Perhaps you offer 2.5k, which seems like a good discount against the 3k, and the seller accepts it. But the seller was perhaps also OK with 2k, and you never knew about this, so you paid 500 over what the seller wanted. People will always low ball you. You cannot set in the advert the price you are OK accepting, because people will offer less than that. At the same time, people want to get as much money as possible. Why selling a flat for 200k when someone might offer 225k? by the_phet (Thu 12th Oct 2023 10:11am)
