  • I love this post. Thank you. I just moved from right off Victoria road and the amount of idiots down south was astounding. Sure, they had masks. But they wore it so their gigantic noses we're sticking out. Didn't understand that arrows were put on the floor for a reason. Absolutely needed to go to Lidl not only with their 3 children, but also with their neighbor and her 4 children. What a freaking nightmare. It's a tiny bit better in the West End. A tiny bit. by JellyBiafra54321 (Sun 13th Dec 2020 5:51am)

  • Have you ever lived anywhere else in Glasgow besides the Hillhead area? People are lazy when it comes to putting their trash where it belongs. Its absolutely filthy. by JellyBiafra54321 (Sun 10th Jan 2021 11:53pm)
  • You'll need a company to sponsor to work here. Or you'll need a student visa. Or you'll need to intend to get married or just get married. You can't just have a visa fall into your lap. And there are restrictions on if you can work or not. And there are also financial restrictions. Just get your partner to Hawaii. by JellyBiafra54321 (Fri 29th Jan 2021 8:57am)

  • Queens Park *is* so fucking nasty in the summer. Especially with the absolute idiots who see an overflowing bin and just leave their rubbish to the side. Take it with you! The park resembles the few grim streets of Govanhill during the summer. The most ridiculous garbage just thrown about. by JellyBiafra54321 (Wed 10th Feb 2021 12:22pm)

  • I'm interested in what type of visa you'll be getting. Are you coming over for uni? by JellyBiafra54321 (Mon 1st Mar 2021 9:44pm)
  • I think you're better off asking your university career services for summer internship/work opportunities. You can search within Glasgow, but most will probably be remote work, so there's really no need to actually come to Glasgow, unless you are just looking to spend some time living here and not in the actual workplace. by JellyBiafra54321 (Tue 2nd Mar 2021 9:25am)

  • I just moved into my own flat and I have bulb. If you'd like my offer through them, I'm happy to share it with you. I've used gumtree to find a coffee table and headboard so far. I was/am in the same boat as you as my place came furnished, but without some typical stuff. I can't wait until charity shops and antique shops open again! by JellyBiafra54321 (Mon 15th Mar 2021 9:13am)

  • You can definitely get through the tunnel. Just show the guys your appointment notice. I did this about a month ago after getting off the train. by JellyBiafra54321 (Thu 18th Mar 2021 3:23pm)
  • The only reason she couldn't access it was because she didn't have an appointment. I used it when I went for my jab. You just need to show your appointment notice. by JellyBiafra54321 (Fri 19th Mar 2021 8:40am)
  • I was under the impression that they've done away with collecting the food bins due to covid. Why this is a covid issue, I don't know. by JellyBiafra54321 (Sat 20th Mar 2021 10:40am)
  • Thanks for the info. I'm in Mount Florida and share the one food waste bin with at least 30+ other flats. It seems as though people have started using it as a general waste bin and, on top of that, it is now missing it's lid. I have a feeling it'll never be emptied! by JellyBiafra54321 (Sat 20th Mar 2021 11:02am)
  • Right?! I don't know what's going on, but people act like they've never encountered a bakery before. One reopened under a new name off Langside in govanhill and people were queuing as if they've never seen a pastry. by JellyBiafra54321 (Sat 20th Mar 2021 6:58pm)

  • I don't think anywhere in Glasgow cares about your pink hair and there's loads of creatives around. Also search this subreddit and take a Google search and then get a city bike and wanderer around. I'm a natural-haired immigrant archivist that lives southside in Mount Florida for context. by JellyBiafra54321 (Mon 22nd Mar 2021 2:52pm)
  • Just reread that first line and it reads snarky af. But seriously. I just returned from Tesco and saw a lady that had to be at least 50+ with a pink dye job. by JellyBiafra54321 (Mon 22nd Mar 2021 3:03pm)

  • Oh god. When I first moved here I was approached by him at the clutha while waiting for a friend to meet up with me. He wouldn't leave us alone. The stories he told were....something. by JellyBiafra54321 (Tue 23rd Mar 2021 12:21am)
  • It is such a great show! I watched it when it was first airing. Michaela Cole is a treasure. Have you watched Chewing Gum? Completely different. Absolutely hilarious! If you'd like to see more of her work, I highly recommend it! by JellyBiafra54321 (Thu 25th Mar 2021 10:47am)
  • I may be thinking of something different, but that wasn't the US, it was [London](https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-8801847/Deliveroos-dark-kitchens-Investigation-reveals-meals-famous-brands-cooked-CAR-PARKS.html). If this isn't what you meant, sorry! by JellyBiafra54321 (Tue 30th Mar 2021 6:53pm)
  • That's exactly what I thought. She viewed the flat before taking it. She needs to declutter and stop bitching about space. The other issues, yeah they need fixing. But space? Shut up about it! by JellyBiafra54321 (Tue 30th Mar 2021 8:49pm)
  • Thank you! And she's bitching about not having enough space...she viewed the flat before taking it. It seems like she has a little problem with having too much stuff for the space. She's been living there since 2016...she's not stuck there. by JellyBiafra54321 (Tue 30th Mar 2021 8:46pm)
  • The two extra chairs for one. It seems like she lacks organisation skills. It's filled with clutter. She took the place knowing how small it was. by JellyBiafra54321 (Tue 30th Mar 2021 8:51pm)
  • That was in 2016 and the only reason she registered as homeless is because her flat was being sold! The lady works for another HA, she obviously knows how the system works. by JellyBiafra54321 (Wed 31st Mar 2021 10:27am)
  • The decent standard of living doesn't include her choice of where the fan switch is or some kind of miraculous expansion of space. Yes, the mold issue, mice, and holes need to be taken care of, but the rest is a joke. Her walls could help alleviate some of that clutter by the simple addition of some shelves. She can sell the doors she bought if they don't fit or if she won't be putting them up. They're just taking up space. She had some points, but the rest is just her being ridiculous. For that price she can't expect a massive space and a choice of how many outlets are in the kitchen. by JellyBiafra54321 (Wed 31st Mar 2021 12:40pm)
  • I've run into this problem before...we ended up eating in the bit of St Enoch's subway before you head underground. The south entrance. It's not the best, but it's also covered so there ya go. by JellyBiafra54321 (Mon 5th Apr 2021 1:55pm)
  • It's whatever. Has plenty of little cafés and weirdos. Close enough to walk to city centre if that's your scene. Have you not actually looked at a city map to see how close the infirmary is? You don't have a job there already/you're just assuming? Weird, but it's very close. by JellyBiafra54321 (Tue 6th Apr 2021 1:54pm)
  • It's super close. And there's a couple of train stations and a few buses in the neighborhood to get you anywhere else. That's a pretty big gamble buying a property in a place you're not remotely familiar with! by JellyBiafra54321 (Tue 6th Apr 2021 2:07pm)
  • I am so sorry you've experienced assholes commenting on your appearance. I may live in my own little bubble, but I'm shocked that grown adults are actually commenting and making faces at someone else because of a shaved head and staples. My own mother had to have a brain tumor removed which required her head to be shaved and staples placed at the removal sight. I just kind of figured adults would know it's not something to be afraid of or laugh about. Most children know this too! As for what you can do, be thankful the surgery was a success and keep your head up. As soon as your head starts to be a bit more tolerable of hats, definitely wear those, but for now just try to ignore as much as you can. Those types of people are the worst. I'm baffled. Also, take this into account: outside of those who have been cruel enough to make pointed comments, no one is thinking about us or noticing us as much as we think they're thinking about us or noticing us. by JellyBiafra54321 (Wed 7th Apr 2021 1:43pm)
  • My dad was number 9 out of 14. All singles. 10 boys and 4 girls. I've a large extended family. by JellyBiafra54321 (Fri 9th Apr 2021 1:59pm)
  • Why on earth would you buy a flat and not know about the safety of the area? by JellyBiafra54321 (Sun 11th Apr 2021 5:55pm)
  • I'm an international student and I just moved into my own flat. As soon as I left the viewing I expressed my interest and put down a deposit. They didn't request that I did, but I wanted it. I also don't have family here to act as a guarantor, so I offered to pay six months up front. I understand that not everyone can offer this. When I first moved here, I was able to rent a room in a shared house via spareroom. It's hard to get your own place. I literally emailed the letting agency as soon as I left. Had the deposit in by the time I got back to my place. This was in late December for a February move-in. I'm not sure how crazy Paisley is, but it's brutal here in Glasgow! by JellyBiafra54321 (Tue 13th Apr 2021 12:40pm)
  • Archive work/internships are a hard catch. I think we're all out to find something. I've been very lucky. When I was first looking for sponsorship (international), I emailed every institution I could get info for. One archivist that I know needed some help (unpaid though) was Kirsty (I think) at the museum of modern art in edinburgh. That was right before all this covid business though. It would have been working with the eduardo paolozzi collection. DM me for any more help with trying to find places! I worked my lil ass off contacting people, so I know quite a few contacts, especially at the three unis here! by JellyBiafra54321 (Wed 14th Apr 2021 11:45am)
  • Rumshack booked for tomorrow! Let's hope the weather isn't shite. by JellyBiafra54321 (Mon 26th Apr 2021 12:02pm)
  • The skull and crossbones are just *[Memento Mori](https://headstonesymbols.co.uk/headstone-meanings-and-symbols/mementomori/)*. You'll find them on a lot of different gravestones. by JellyBiafra54321 (Tue 27th Apr 2021 9:37am)
  • This is what I'm thinking too. I understand that asylum seekers go through a totally different process, but they've been flagged for deportation, right? by JellyBiafra54321 (Thu 13th May 2021 5:49pm)
  • I'm a immigrant myself and I'm wondering why people keep bringing this up. by JellyBiafra54321 (Thu 13th May 2021 5:54pm)
  • Ooof. I'm an American living in Glasgow. A black American woman. What do you have to say about me?! by JellyBiafra54321 (Fri 14th May 2021 5:19pm)
  • They weren't Muslim and it shouldn't matter if it was a holiday or not. You guys have all this info messed up. by JellyBiafra54321 (Fri 14th May 2021 5:23pm)
  • Also, I haven't seen spray cheese since I was wee. I don't think anyone actually eats that anymore. by JellyBiafra54321 (Fri 14th May 2021 5:21pm)
  • No one actually eats spray cheese. That's like saying you guys exist on fried mars bars. I'll go ahead and take it that you've never actually been to the states or befriended a person from one of the states. Whatever. No need to be rude to others though. by JellyBiafra54321 (Fri 14th May 2021 8:07pm)
  • Maybe you should get out of your neighborhood more often. You're totally generalising and it comes off as pathetic. Read more about the city and neighbourhoods and move. You've had 18 months presumably in the same place. No one is keeping you there. by JellyBiafra54321 (Tue 18th May 2021 12:31pm)
  • I like your username! I should definitely join a boardgame group. I haven't played a good boardgame in ages! by JellyBiafra54321 (Thu 20th May 2021 10:25am)
  • They're not really that specialised in curly hair. I've tried to go and told them I have natural hair (black girl from the states with crazy big hair with tiny curls) and they apparently have no idea how to work with my type of curls. Shite for inclusivity if they want to claim to specialise in curls. by JellyBiafra54321 (Sat 22nd May 2021 8:41am)
  • They actually suggested I got to Scott at Belle and Blackley, whom I absolutely adore, but I wanted to try something that was a close walk for me instead of having to cycle or take the train into town. A friend suggested I contact the owner and offer my head of curls to help train the stylists on a different type of curls, but I don't know if I'm up for that just yet! I love my curls! by JellyBiafra54321 (Sat 22nd May 2021 9:39am)
  • Have you tried https://www.artpistol.co.uk/ ? by JellyBiafra54321 (Fri 28th May 2021 9:44am)
  • I'm with you on this. If you choose to live with neighbors that share the same communal space, you should be decent enough to let them know if you're hosting a party. Not asking permission, but at least giving a heads up. That's just shitty. by JellyBiafra54321 (Sun 30th May 2021 2:38pm)
  • I just moved from the area to Mount Florida. Govanhill is perfectly fine. It's just really junky in some areas. I had no issues with the community aside from the rubbish. by JellyBiafra54321 (Tue 1st Jun 2021 4:50pm)
  • I hate to be that person, but there's so many threads on this issue. At least 5-10 a week. It seems like it's hard at the moment to find a place, but that can obviously change in January 2022. People have posted about flats being gone before they even have a chance to view. That includes both renting and buying. Your range is doable, but not easy to find in some of the more 'sought after' areas. They get snapped up real quick. Good luck finding somewhere! by JellyBiafra54321 (Tue 1st Jun 2021 10:22pm)
  • But why are you moving to the area if you're so annoyed with the events that go on!? Why would you put yourself in that situation? Plenty of areas available for you to go that don't involve having to deal with that stuff. by JellyBiafra54321 (Thu 3rd Jun 2021 3:18pm)
  • I pay £475 for a pretty large one bedroom flat right off Mount Florida. It's not impossible, but it does take a while to find. I'm honestly surprised you can't find anything cheaper. I just moved into my place in February. by JellyBiafra54321 (Mon 7th Jun 2021 3:36pm)
  • Got my second jab last Saturday and the guy tells me it's the astrazeneca vaccine. I tell him, "wait! I had the Pfizer one back in late February" and he said he'd go check. I had received a notice saying I didn't attend my first appointment, but got that all straightened out after a couple of phone calls...or so I thought. The guy comes back after a minute or two and says, "oh, it was definitely the astrazeneca" and I'm sitting there thinking I'm crazy and he jabs me. Come home, look at my papers from my first jab and lo and behold...it was bnt162b2, the Pfizer vaccine. Hopefully the literature out there about having two different jabs is on point bc I don't want to end up Hulk-ish or something. Sucks though because this means that the jabber is a liar and/or the NHS isn't keeping proper records. by JellyBiafra54321 (Wed 9th Jun 2021 10:05am)
  • Thank you so much for this! I just registered and both doses say I received the Az one (too lazy to spell it out), but the information packet they gave me with my first dose says it's the bnt162b2 (Pfizer) vaccine. I really hope they just gave me the wrong info packet... by JellyBiafra54321 (Wed 9th Jun 2021 11:01am)
  • Oh, absolutely. I know one who eats jammie dodgers all day long and it shows. by JellyBiafra54321 (Fri 11th Jun 2021 8:37pm)
  • I think you're right on the money.a lot of these places claiming to be this and that often lack an actual person of that ethnicity/gender/whatever who has a say in how things go. When I first heard about it, it was a hard eye roll from me. Just slapping as many labels as possible on to feel special. by JellyBiafra54321 (Fri 11th Jun 2021 8:43pm)
  • They're not being racist at all. There's a huge issue of white, middle-class people heading up these types of businesses that claim to promote diversity etc., yet they're too closed off to find and befriend a poc to help out and share ideas with? They're on Victoria road for fucks sake. If they're so involved with the community it wouldn't be that difficult to have representation. by JellyBiafra54321 (Fri 11th Jun 2021 8:49pm)
  • I love this reply. by JellyBiafra54321 (Fri 11th Jun 2021 8:46pm)
  • What? A black person kicked away? If they're going to cast themselves as being progressive and community oriented then they need to have a board that represents the community. I don't understand how that is racist. by JellyBiafra54321 (Fri 11th Jun 2021 8:57pm)
  • I'm also a poc, a black woman from the US, and the audacity for this person to start preaching to us about how it's perfectly fine to have an all-white board and what we're saying is racist is beyond ignorant. Yikes. by JellyBiafra54321 (Fri 11th Jun 2021 9:05pm)
  • You're just being a dick. It would be nice to not have an all-white board when they do business in the most diverse neighborhood in Scotland. You're really being kinda gross. You know exactly what op meant. by JellyBiafra54321 (Fri 11th Jun 2021 10:29pm)
  • I'm a student, an international one at that, and I was in a position to offer 6 months upfront. I also put down a deposit as soon as I stepped out from viewing it. You really just need to keep looking and hope for the best. You can also try posting on neighborhood Facebook groups to see if anyone knows of anything coming up. by JellyBiafra54321 (Sat 19th Jun 2021 2:22pm)
  • Unfortunately, the study carrels and private music rooms at the Mitchell are not available to book atm. The only study space open is on the 2nd floor and it's not private at all. The hours are quite limited atm too. The Saltire library at Caledonian is open to the public and they have loads of areas that may be of use to you. It should be quite quiet at this time. I would email a librarian and ask if they have the private study spaces open. Even if they don't, you can definitely still find a semi private space to have your appointment. by JellyBiafra54321 (Sun 20th Jun 2021 10:53am)
  • The private study spaces are a godsend. I don't know what I would have done without that service when I was studying for my first MSc! by JellyBiafra54321 (Sun 20th Jun 2021 11:19am)
  • Well, I'm currently working on one now and I'm struggling to find a quiet study space. No need for the saltiness. by JellyBiafra54321 (Mon 21st Jun 2021 1:51am)
  • Well, they refused to even see me and I have naturally curly hair. But then again, I asked if they had experience with my type of curls and that seemed to freak them out. My type being natural afro textured curls. They're not that specialised in curls. by JellyBiafra54321 (Mon 21st Jun 2021 5:12pm)
  • Yeah, it sucks. I'm used to having a million different options, but I chose to live here. I love it, but finding someone who can actually shape and style my curls is hard. Scott at Belle and Blackley can shape but can't style. I may sacrifice my head to let them practice on actually being inclusive. ETA: just took a peek at their Instagram again...maybe I won't let them touch my head. by JellyBiafra54321 (Mon 21st Jun 2021 5:28pm)
  • Why don't you just go to one of the walk-in locations? People post about walk-ins quite a bit on here. by JellyBiafra54321 (Tue 22nd Jun 2021 7:17am)
  • There have been many times when both the Louisa Jordan and the mosque in the Gorbals have made it walk-in for anyone that should have had their first dose by now. My boyfriend is 28 and that's how he received his first dose. by JellyBiafra54321 (Tue 22nd Jun 2021 7:36am)
  • Congrats! So glad you've been able to get that sorted! by JellyBiafra54321 (Tue 22nd Jun 2021 7:47am)
  • My god, that's one of my biggest fears. I've completely stopped taking birth control myself. The pill made me have way too many highs and lows and nuvaring elevated my blood pressure. I'm scared of having anything implanted in me, so it'll be the good ol' wrap up until I figure something out. What were the symptoms that made you aware? So glad you're out and everything is on the mend! by JellyBiafra54321 (Tue 22nd Jun 2021 8:39am)
  • Yes. Lots of "look at me" vibes. by JellyBiafra54321 (Tue 22nd Jun 2021 6:55pm)
  • Of course. Because I pointed out that their board wasn't reflective of the community they claimed to serve. by JellyBiafra54321 (Tue 22nd Jun 2021 8:03pm)
  • I totally get what you're saying. It's kinda shite seeing the down votes, but what you're getting at makes complete sense. If someone knows the council is shite at emptying the bins, knows that birds/foxes/people will tear into bags left outside the bins, then why not either produce less waste and/or find another bin to take their bag to? I get it it. by JellyBiafra54321 (Wed 23rd Jun 2021 1:44pm)
  • I love Glasgow, I really do. That being said, it's the trashiest place I've lived. I've lived in Houston, Mexico City, and New York City. The amount of trash here is gross. by JellyBiafra54321 (Wed 23rd Jun 2021 1:46pm)
  • https://www.greatergovanhill.com/noticeboard Community notice board right there. Loads of info. Everyone else has given great info too. Definitely worth it to look into the neighborhood fb pages. I live in Mount Florida, but happy to have a pint anytime! by JellyBiafra54321 (Wed 23rd Jun 2021 2:40pm)
  • Market in Mount Florida! by JellyBiafra54321 (Wed 23rd Jun 2021 11:10pm)
  • I haven't been, but I'm quite familiar with both Mexican food and tex-mex and I've taken a look at the menu... That ain't it. I bet the drinks are nice! by JellyBiafra54321 (Fri 25th Jun 2021 10:53am)
  • That's your first mistake. You've also received your second dose barely 4 weeks after the first. Two different countries too? This is all your fault. You lied about your country of residence and now what? by JellyBiafra54321 (Wed 30th Jun 2021 5:58pm)
  • I believe you wrote that you don't live in Scotland. And within that same comment you wrote that you do not even live in England. The doses are supposed to be at least 8 weeks apart. by JellyBiafra54321 (Wed 30th Jun 2021 6:33pm)
  • It's beautiful out and pay day. by JellyBiafra54321 (Thu 1st Jul 2021 8:47pm)
  • If all else fails I can do it for you in the archive at the CCA. You could also just order a cassette to MP3 player from Amazon, do what you need to do, and send it back. It's Amazon, so it's whatever. by JellyBiafra54321 (Thu 1st Jul 2021 8:46pm)
  • Welcome! by JellyBiafra54321 (Sat 3rd Jul 2021 3:02pm)
  • Yes! Also check Niall Murphy on Twitter. Young's Interesting Books in Shawlands has a pretty large selection of old Glasgow history books too, so you may be able to find something there. And Glasgow City Archives at the Mitchell Library! by JellyBiafra54321 (Mon 5th Jul 2021 12:12am)
  • Oh god. That's fuckin' adorable. by JellyBiafra54321 (Mon 5th Jul 2021 12:45pm)
  • I live right near here... But is Ghanian anything like Ethiopian food? I've been asking about Ethiopian lately but I keep getting directed to odooms! Is it just because... Africa? by JellyBiafra54321 (Tue 6th Jul 2021 11:44pm)
  • Just so you know, you can now buy tickets on your phone ahead of time and have them right there on the app where you just scan the barcode. No more embarrassing stops at the barriers and no more paper tickets! by JellyBiafra54321 (Wed 7th Jul 2021 12:04am)
  • Wilson Street Pantry or Singl-End in merchant City. by JellyBiafra54321 (Wed 7th Jul 2021 12:05am)
  • Thank you for taking time to respond! I was baffled when I saw the comment about odooms! It's so weird when people just lump all of the African countries together. by JellyBiafra54321 (Wed 7th Jul 2021 10:04am)
  • Just slap on some sunscreen and go lay out in the sun. The orange/fake tans here are so odd looking. by JellyBiafra54321 (Thu 8th Jul 2021 3:17pm)
  • Vintage shops are a ripoff these days. I worked at a placed called Cheap Thrills in Tulsa back in the day and easily stocked my closet. It's shite because more than half the time they just raid charity shops and estate sales and bump the prices far more than necessary. That being said, I did find a cute top for £4 yesterday at Seamster Vintage at the Cooperage off Pollockshaws road. Most everything else was £20+. by JellyBiafra54321 (Sun 11th Jul 2021 7:56pm)
  • Yeah, the "str8s" aren't the only ones supporting Italy. by JellyBiafra54321 (Sun 11th Jul 2021 8:44pm)

  • Oh dear...why?!?! by JellyBiafra54321 (Mon 12th Jul 2021 11:14am)
  • When I moved to my own flat back in February, I couldn't be arsed buying both a TV and a TV stand so I bought a small projector with blue tooth and the ability to connect my Chromecast. It's been absolutely brilliant for the few times I use it! Was only about £75 too! by JellyBiafra54321 (Tue 13th Jul 2021 6:14pm)
  • Window open and I bought a little turbo fan. I'm from Houston though, so I'm trying desperately to cope with having no AC. Oh! I also have a duvet for the winter and one for summer. by JellyBiafra54321 (Thu 15th Jul 2021 3:41pm)
  • My fan moves with me from my bedroom to my living room. I even bought a tiny one for the archive room at work. I run hot. The humidity doesn't help! by JellyBiafra54321 (Sat 17th Jul 2021 9:21am)
  • I can't wait until the autumn! Although the weather is nice just now, I moved here to be much cooler that the shite I experienced in Houston. Having no AC really messes with my body here in this 'heat'. I'm used to up to about 40c, but that's when I have a pool to easily access or can run indoors to fans and AC! by JellyBiafra54321 (Sat 17th Jul 2021 3:22pm)
  • Went to Singl-End last week and almost strolled across to the record store shop front before I realised it was fake. The shops are brilliantly done! by JellyBiafra54321 (Tue 20th Jul 2021 12:43pm)
  • God, I miss swimming. I'm also Southside. When I first moved here I got real excited about the govanhill baths, but it turns out they've been dragging their feet for almost 20 years to get it back up and running. Will probably be another 5 or so before it's actually functional. Gorbals Glasgow club has a great indoor pool, but I'm not sure if they're offering pay per session yet or if it's still just members. by JellyBiafra54321 (Tue 20th Jul 2021 2:04pm)
  • terfs don't want trans people erased. It's just that some women believe that they should have a say over how they feel about certain aspects of society and who's allowed into them. This ranges from things to do with healthcare to spaces like gym changing rooms and to sports. They are women who don't necessarily want to exclude transwomen, but would like to acknowledge the differences. I honestly think the hate on both sides is gross. ETA: *some* terfs don't want trans women erased. There's plenty of assholes out there that do. by JellyBiafra54321 (Tue 20th Jul 2021 2:38pm)

  • So happy to see the CCA on here! I absolutely love it. Anything Alexander Greek Thomson is a treat along with his out-of-place tombstone in the southern necropolis close to the ruins of his Caledonian road church which is basically the twin of the St Vincent Street church that he built. His Egyptian Halls are completely covered, but they're right across from Central on Union Street. I think it's Union Street. There's also his bucks head building off of argyle. And some of his tenement flats are still around in govanhill/strathbungo and in the west side too! by JellyBiafra54321 (Thu 22nd Jul 2021 3:12pm)
  • Definitely take others' advice on here that seems to be with good intentions. Your autism isn't why you're being ignored in the first place. Have someone look over your CV. There are plenty of people with autism and other issues (physical and mental) that have jobs. Don't pigeonhole yourself. by JellyBiafra54321 (Sat 24th Jul 2021 1:48pm)
  • This is such useful, realistic information. People have the same exact misconceptions about library and archival work. You don't hide away in the stacks all day. Being a librarian and an archivist is very much a public facing job. by JellyBiafra54321 (Sat 24th Jul 2021 1:50pm)
  • I've talked to both men and women on there! I do fully admit that the guys I've talked to are all gay men🀷🏾‍♀️ by JellyBiafra54321 (Sat 24th Jul 2021 10:35pm)
  • I'd recommend searching this sub and reading the five million other posts that have asked the same question. by JellyBiafra54321 (Thu 29th Jul 2021 11:45am)
  • Um, I don't know if you've paid attention to the nightmare of the housing market right now, but I think it's insensitive to say they need to join the ranks of those who always go for top floor. Adding that to a 'must' is just another headache. The neighbours should consider the fact that they live in a tenement and that kind of racket is unacceptable. Yeah, some noise is expected, but what the poster is experiencing is shite. by JellyBiafra54321 (Thu 29th Jul 2021 8:37pm)
  • I understand what you're saying, but...nah. Op is entitled to a living situation that doesn't infringe on his health and well-being. They need to nip this behaviour issue in the bud. by JellyBiafra54321 (Thu 29th Jul 2021 8:52pm)
  • This is one hundred percent going to seem rude, but you'll find that many people your age here identify as arty, vegan, lgbtqia as it's not really unique or anything in a city. You'll be fine. No one will cause you any trouble u less you're an ass. There's a ton of options for you. by JellyBiafra54321 (Thu 29th Jul 2021 9:54pm)
  • Apparently someone was in distress. Been there for quite awhile. by JellyBiafra54321 (Fri 30th Jul 2021 9:10am)
  • Why on earth does everyone just assume 'autism'?! It's running rampant on Reddit atm. The kid could just be a lil asshole. by JellyBiafra54321 (Fri 30th Jul 2021 11:25am)
  • I've also worked with children as a teacher and an immersion special education teacher and it's usually always the adult's issue. But there are ways to put an end to it or at least curb the behaviour. No one should have to put up with that in their living environment. I kinda think it's gross how people would advise to just deal with it or move. No, tenements aren't the quietest environment, but the issue op is having isn't normal. by JellyBiafra54321 (Fri 30th Jul 2021 10:18pm)
  • My floors are also carpeted and I leave my shoes between the storm doors and the main. My neighbour upstairs, however, loves pacing about in shoes on his laminates and I can't stand it. But I've never confronted him about walking in his own flat as that's absurd. But the running and yelling at all hours? Yikes. by JellyBiafra54321 (Fri 30th Jul 2021 10:30pm)
  • I like the bit about Love Island hitting Glasgow. It's quite shocking. by JellyBiafra54321 (Sun 1st Aug 2021 6:20pm)
  • I'm so glad you wrote cali-Mexican. I need to check it out. I'm a tex-mex lady, but I do love the other side of it too! by JellyBiafra54321 (Mon 2nd Aug 2021 12:59am)
  • There are absolutely no restaurants that do justice to Texas BBQ. No, not even the Denniston one. BBQ restaurants don't do burgers. I will say that I'm impressed by the burritos and tacos at Mezcal near Central though! by JellyBiafra54321 (Mon 2nd Aug 2021 12:58am)
  • Finding ingredients good enough for a decent Mexican or tex-mex meal is shite! I get that the climate isn't ideal, but my goodness. Trying to find a good selection of jalepeños or serranos shouldn't be this difficult. And it's hot or miss finding perfect avocados. I made this choice to live here though. And I love it besides this little issue. by JellyBiafra54321 (Mon 2nd Aug 2021 1:02am)
  • Lupe Pintos doesn't have fresh chilli peppers in bulk. Nor do they have the variety of tortillas. They have maseca which is nice if I were to make my own. They lack a lot of the good stuff (Tajin and chamoy for fruit cups, a lovely, indigenous woman making the best tortillas you've ever tasted in the corner of the shop, etc). by JellyBiafra54321 (Mon 2nd Aug 2021 7:58am)
  • Hold up. I thought the birthplace of the burrito was Juárez. Have I been lied to? by JellyBiafra54321 (Mon 2nd Aug 2021 8:06am)
  • THIS IS THE ANSWER! Yes, I had to shout that because this person gets it. by JellyBiafra54321 (Mon 2nd Aug 2021 9:33am)
  • Ohhhh. I'll need to check them out to see if they serve sopapillas. It's a New Mexico dessert, but maybe they're into it. I'm baffled by the love for churros here. The sopapilla is basically a soft, doughy, love pillow of cinnamon goodness that you dip in honey. by JellyBiafra54321 (Mon 2nd Aug 2021 9:40am)
  • Oh! The song/video of the day brings back so many memories! What a time to be alive when that album came out! I was wee, but I really took notice because of the fantastic videos that accompanied it! by JellyBiafra54321 (Mon 2nd Aug 2021 9:45am)
  • I lived in Mexico City for a couple of years and it's a completely different cuisine. Each state of Mexico is so unique in terms of ingredients. That being said, the closest you're going to get here in Glasgow/the UK is possibly Cali-Mex. by JellyBiafra54321 (Mon 2nd Aug 2021 11:25am)
  • I have a pair and they do make a wee difference! by JellyBiafra54321 (Mon 2nd Aug 2021 5:01pm)

  • Tbh, it's a bit dirty but you're close to a lot of great restaurants and arts stuff. It's not the quietest area of the city at all, but it is very close to everything and most people around are quite decent. by JellyBiafra54321 (Thu 5th Aug 2021 4:40pm)
  • If you take a wee look around this subreddit, you'll see housing is a bit of a nightmare at the moment. by JellyBiafra54321 (Fri 6th Aug 2021 11:25am)
  • Why? Why is the housing market shite? I don't know. I'm sure someone can give you a full, descriptive analysis of the buying and rental market. by JellyBiafra54321 (Fri 6th Aug 2021 11:48am)
  • Renting is shite in the southside because of demand. I have been lucky with finding a steal of a deal for a large one bedroom for a decent price, but that was back in December when I was looking. It's apparently gotten a bit out of control. by JellyBiafra54321 (Fri 6th Aug 2021 11:50am)
  • The Mitchell isn't letting people use the study carrels atm. The only available study area is the 2nd floor and it's open space book by appointment only. And no food or drink except eater. And I'm almost positive it's not available on the weekends and the hours are quite slim during the week. God, every sentence I wrote was so grim! by JellyBiafra54321 (Sat 7th Aug 2021 9:52am)
  • I honestly don't understand why this is so difficult then. There's 107 flats available (I entered 450min and 700max) right in Glasgow via Rightmove. You can't sit and mull over a flat for days on end, just take the one you like immediately. Call the agent or tell the landlord as soon as you view it. Offer the deposit right then (they can't make you, but you can offer). by JellyBiafra54321 (Thu 12th Aug 2021 11:09am)
  • I moved from there to Mount Florida back in February. It's still quite gross for the most part. 20 coffee shops isn't going to change the real issues. by JellyBiafra54321 (Thu 12th Aug 2021 11:10am)
  • So if you're that pressed for a place have your phone glued to you and hit refresh. I found my place on right move and although it wasn't during this time of the year, it was a headache. But, I made it work. They can't be unlucky 107 times in a row. by JellyBiafra54321 (Thu 12th Aug 2021 1:35pm)
  • Please don't romanticise tenement flats. Yeah, they're pretty, but there's usually not much sound proofing and many have had their original features removed or covered up. For example, the shutters for my bday windows are painted shut. The tube line is literally a circle around the main bits of the city centre. Maybe you should look up more info on the city before making the choice. by JellyBiafra54321 (Thu 12th Aug 2021 11:18pm)
  • Sure, viccyroadforever. by JellyBiafra54321 (Thu 12th Aug 2021 11:39pm)

  • I totally admit to writing a little 'about me' email and offered six months rent in advance for the place I'm in now. I even offered a deposit as soon as I left the property. This was back in December for a mid-February move-in. by JellyBiafra54321 (Mon 16th Aug 2021 1:05pm)
  • I'm currently on a student visa that will switch to a tier 2 (is it still called that?) next year. I'm not from the UK and don't have family here that could act as guarantors. It was kind of my only option if I wanted it. I'd love to buy a flat, but I'm not able to legally! by JellyBiafra54321 (Mon 16th Aug 2021 2:28pm)
  • You are a good person. I definitely would have blocked and ended the conversation as soon as that nasty reply came in. You responded and answered with grace. And black beans are the absolute best! by JellyBiafra54321 (Tue 17th Aug 2021 5:02pm)

  • Oh goodness. I spent so much money on the music magazines from the UK as a weird kid growing up in Tulsa, Oklahoma. I would go to borders and buy NME, Uncut (free cd!), Melody Maker, and tons of indie fashion magazines. What a great place, especially for awkward pre-teens/teens to immerse themselves in! by JellyBiafra54321 (Thu 19th Aug 2021 6:26pm)

  • All of Glasgow needs a good r/powerwashingporn . by JellyBiafra54321 (Sat 21st Aug 2021 9:07pm)
  • I'd that first sentence a question? Govanhill is filthy. There's no way you can't see that. Shawlands is okay along with Battlefield and where I live in Mount Florida, but that's due to community clean ups. Govanhill is absolute scum. No matter how many coffeeshops open, it's an issue with the people who live there along with the scum with shops who use it as a dumping ground. It truly does need a good do over and scrubbing. by JellyBiafra54321 (Sat 21st Aug 2021 9:05pm)
  • Oh that's weird... Isn't there an Indian restaurant being renovated right across the street? Or perhaps it's going to be something different than what it was... by JellyBiafra54321 (Sun 22nd Aug 2021 12:03pm)
  • Oh, that's fuckin' fowl. I used to live around the corner on Queen Mary ave and would feel so sorry for the people who lived above it when the first started working on it. I don't think it was in business when I first moved over there. I only lived there for a little over a year. Definitely looked like a shite place. Why is this guy throwing a fit? Should have known it was listed before starting work. by JellyBiafra54321 (Sun 22nd Aug 2021 2:31pm)

  • I've noticed that daily posts asking about how to find housing and which places were trendy to live in from newcomers has died down quite a bit. Did I scare them off by telling them to use the sidebar and search function or did everyone find a happy home? by JellyBiafra54321 (Mon 23rd Aug 2021 11:12am)
  • Ugggghhhhhh. The Greenock one I can understand. The London to Edinburgh or Glasgow? I don't fucking know you or your likes/wants/circumstances. Ffs. by JellyBiafra54321 (Mon 23rd Aug 2021 11:44am)
  • Sure. Why not. But you need to figure this out yourself because we don't know you. You should probably visit a few times before packing up and moving. I fucking jinxed myself by posting in the steamie about this. by JellyBiafra54321 (Mon 23rd Aug 2021 11:42am)
  • It's such a bummer that Glasgow Life still isn't taking new members. I really enjoy the Les Mills classes and spin. If you're near a train station there's a PureGym right out to the West of central (I'm terrible with street names) that's not too bad if the one in Shawlands is packed. I hope someone here has better ideas for ya. by JellyBiafra54321 (Mon 23rd Aug 2021 12:11pm)
  • What do you mean by 'register'? If you're looking to study or use the archives you'll need to book an appointment. Their opening hours are horrendous at the moment. I believe it's only 11:00 - 16:00 and only Tuesday through Saturday. If you're just checking out books, no need to email or phone for appointment, but the hours still apply. Wait ... here's the link. • Me too. by JellyBiafra54321 (Mon 23rd Aug 2021 1:35pm)
  • You don't have to go to the Mitchell for that, you can register at any library. You should definitely be able to go in and get a card though. It's just a wee form you fill out and you may need to bring proof of address. It's still the same exact opening times that are listed. Hence why you cannot get through today. by JellyBiafra54321 (Mon 23rd Aug 2021 2:02pm)
  • I have a massive one bedroom in Mount Florida for only £475. Got it in December for a February move-in though. Sometimes you get lucky. Most one bedrooms down here are definitely under £800 though. Nothing too extreme. Will be once all the Londoners keep arriving. by JellyBiafra54321 (Tue 24th Aug 2021 3:14pm)
  • Let me guess ...with a budget like that you're coming from around London? Cunts who are local are trying to find places to live and are having a tough time. It's been posted a million times on the sub. Just scroll or search it and you'll see you're not the only unlucky cunt. by JellyBiafra54321 (Tue 24th Aug 2021 3:12pm)
  • Please go to the Scottish government website where you can find all the information you'll need. Your university should also have information regarding Covid-19. Much more informed info than you'd get from a bunch of crazy Redditors. by JellyBiafra54321 (Tue 24th Aug 2021 7:27pm)
  • Mezcal right out of central is quite decent. I've heard good things about Rafa's. Sacred Tum is both a rip-off and bland as fuck. Keep in mind these are not actually authentic Mexican. Rafa's is apparently Cali-Mex/Arizona influenced (?) and Mezcal is borderline authentic with a pretty basic menu that definitely caters to the basic bitch pallet. Topolobamba is...I don't know how to describe it but it's not as good as mezcal (or possibly Rafa's) yet not as shite as Sacred Tum. The only ones doing anything close to authentic Mexican would be [Yu-ca-taco](https://www.yucataco.com). They are a food truck, but do home delivery on the weekends. Oh yeah, there's some place called the Luchador on Pollockshields, but I haven't tried it. Apparently the owner runs Abandon Ship or is connected to it some way and that place wasn't that great either when I tried it up north. by JellyBiafra54321 (Thu 26th Aug 2021 2:22am)
  • A place called Mr Lincoln has just opened under The Luchador in Strathbungo. Supposed to be all speakeasy and cool. by JellyBiafra54321 (Thu 26th Aug 2021 12:50pm)
  • Tbf, none of the restaurants mentioned are actually Mexican. You'd be hard-pressed to find an actual Mexican restaurant in Scotland. by JellyBiafra54321 (Thu 26th Aug 2021 1:01pm)
  • I laughed at the Lupe's dig. Great selection of ready-made salsas and the fact that they carry maseca is fab. But the food is subpar. Even the tortilla chips are bland. The only thing I don't like about mezcal are the quesadillas. I really wish blue corn tortillas would catch on here. by JellyBiafra54321 (Thu 26th Aug 2021 1:18pm)
  • I have never been interested in having a martini, but now that I know that there's such a thing as a coconut martini...I have to give it a go. by JellyBiafra54321 (Thu 26th Aug 2021 1:32pm)
  • Oh! I quite like **Tabac**! Thanks for reminding me of that place! These all sound great. I have to try the others mentioned! by JellyBiafra54321 (Thu 26th Aug 2021 1:30pm)
  • Chiles en nogada, a delicious bowl of pozole, and camotes enmielados (how do they make them so friggin good? I wish I could import the guy and his little oven cart over here to live with me) will never be an easy-to-obtain thing here, but I constantly tell myself that I made the choice to live this far north. I fully admit to never trying huitlacoche when I lived in cdmx. Just not for me! by JellyBiafra54321 (Thu 26th Aug 2021 1:44pm)
  • You probably could have just made one post asking everyone to plan your visit to Glasgow. by JellyBiafra54321 (Thu 26th Aug 2021 3:19pm)
  • Has no one else noticed that today's feed has been filled with people asking for recommendations for almost the same damn thing? Coffee, cocktails, lunch, beer gardens, etc. Is someone writing an article? Can't be arsed with Google? Have all of them decided that Glasgow Reddit is the authority on these things? What is going on? by JellyBiafra54321 (Thu 26th Aug 2021 5:04pm)
  • Use the side bar info. Also, before you come back later and ask, yes the rental market is shite now. It's expensive. Flats are getting snapped up without viewings. It'll be hard. Terrible. by JellyBiafra54321 (Thu 26th Aug 2021 6:08pm)
  • Sidebar is where you find information about the sub. Not sure what form of Reddit you're using, but it usually along with info about the sub. Glasgow users have taken time out to create a wiki that answers routinely asked questions. Looks like this: [sidebar](https://i.imgur.com/nouBbiM.png) ETA, you could also just use a map. Plot out where you need to go and figure it out from there. Bus, subway, and rail. Subway is quite useless if you need out of city centre though. Just one glance would tell you that. by JellyBiafra54321 (Thu 26th Aug 2021 6:40pm)
  • Genuinely interested in why it doesn't bother you to read the same exact questions every day when users have made a really great wiki answering FAQs. It starts to become the same discussions over and over. Multiple times a day sometimes. by JellyBiafra54321 (Thu 26th Aug 2021 7:35pm)
  • You're being a dick. by JellyBiafra54321 (Thu 26th Aug 2021 8:43pm)
  • I love Shilling! Could you party be split in two? Maybe try asking for two tables of 4? Their beer flights are such a great deal! by JellyBiafra54321 (Sun 29th Aug 2021 9:23am)
  • I'm not sure what kind of answers you're expecting. Train, bus, car, or plane. Train is the best option as someone pointed out that London is first so and Glasgow is last. No one will be checking the weight and size of bags, but you need to be able to carry them yourself. I'm sure an employee can help you, but you'll need to figure out if you want to take a taxi, the subway, or another train to get to the west end once you arrive in Glasgow. I'm sure that someone will help you employee or not - people in Glasgow are quite willing to help. by JellyBiafra54321 (Sun 29th Aug 2021 5:33pm)

  • Are you referring to the US police as knuckledraggers or every single person from the United States? by JellyBiafra54321 (Wed 1st Sep 2021 9:13pm)
  • You're so cool. by JellyBiafra54321 (Thu 2nd Sep 2021 9:26am)
  • Thanks. But who the fuck thinks the policing system in the US is the gold standard?! I think I may live in a bubble, but none of my family or friends back home think this. And my own father was a captain of a police unit. And my cousin is a chief! by JellyBiafra54321 (Thu 2nd Sep 2021 9:30am)
  • I've not seen any removed from queen's park. I've seen a couple that have been burned because of assholes who put fireworks in them, but the bins are still there. I read about the removal of bins at homlea park, but someone complained to their local and they were replaced within the week. by JellyBiafra54321 (Thu 2nd Sep 2021 9:36am)

  • Yeah, some people have too much time on their hands, it seems by JellyBiafra54321 (Fri 3rd Sep 2021 8:29am)
  • Or just heterosexual people hanging out with their lgbtqia friends. by JellyBiafra54321 (Fri 3rd Sep 2021 11:21am)
  • Absolutely not. It's resident parking only and they really enforce this. Signs about restricted parking have been up all week. by JellyBiafra54321 (Fri 3rd Sep 2021 11:25am)
  • It's always someone else's fault with some people. Absolutely no personal responsibility. And the girl's friends are shite if this is true. It's such a weird post and story. I'm guessing some people have multiple accounts and enjoy downvoting. What a life. by JellyBiafra54321 (Fri 3rd Sep 2021 2:11pm)
  • This is wonderful news!!!! by JellyBiafra54321 (Fri 3rd Sep 2021 9:29pm)
  • A load of people are so quick to assume you're out to just hurt some random groups' feelings. This whole thread is a hot mess of people looking for a reason to be upset. Your comment wasn't 'biphobic.' Your both writing on hypothetical situations, it's just that one of you is trying to feel attacked for no reason and it's not you. by JellyBiafra54321 (Fri 3rd Sep 2021 9:57pm)
  • That's such a tacky response. They're not attacking you at all. This shit makes my blood boil - refusing to actually take in what someone is writing and coming back with this shit. Ugh. by JellyBiafra54321 (Fri 3rd Sep 2021 10:00pm)
  • How the fuck did they get "transphobic" out of yous?! I know exactly the type you're on about and it seems this thread is full of them. They thrive off being different and feeling attacked at the slightest word that doesn't sit right. It's absurd. by JellyBiafra54321 (Fri 3rd Sep 2021 10:24pm)
  • Or they all have friends they mostly talk to online and see once in a blue moon in real life. They all live in this weird bubble where every 'other' is the enemy and that includes people that also identify as lgbtqia, but not to their liking. And I can guarantee you that they're white, middle class, and bored of not being 'special.' by JellyBiafra54321 (Fri 3rd Sep 2021 10:27pm)
  • Their words weren't even offensive! What are you on about with the >language you're using to describe this all isn't coming off well And they aren't being vague at all! You're just being oversensitive and looking for ways to be offended. by JellyBiafra54321 (Fri 3rd Sep 2021 10:29pm)
  • No, it's not the same thing at all. People that have taken up all of these extra labels have been attacking members of the lgbtqia themselves! Not just straight people. I work with a gay man who has been called a transphobe for not being open to dating a trans man. There's a group of people so far up their own asses within the community that don't see the hypocrisy of outcasting people from the community because they don't adhere to their view of what's acceptable. It's gross. by JellyBiafra54321 (Fri 3rd Sep 2021 11:05pm)
  • To say what's 'in' or 'out' is so tacky. by JellyBiafra54321 (Sun 5th Sep 2021 2:24pm)
  • They do! I've noticed the girls all have bone straight hair and wear air force ones and black leggings. I only notice this because I grew up with wild, curly hair and a group of friends with all different styles. Bizzare how they all look the same. And, yeah, I'm old. by JellyBiafra54321 (Sun 5th Sep 2021 2:23pm)
  • Park Lane Market is truly one of the best wee markets I've ever been too. What a great vibe! by JellyBiafra54321 (Sun 5th Sep 2021 2:20pm)

  • I don't mean to be rude, but many people are having issues with finding accommodation. If you want to rent privately and don't have a guarantor, then you need to offer a few months rent up front to secure a place in most circumstances. This seems like an issue you should have sorted way before you arrived. You can spend quite a lot of money on a one bedroom, so I can only assume that you can afford to rent out an Airbnb until you can find suitable accommodation. by JellyBiafra54321 (Thu 9th Sep 2021 9:23pm)
  • Libraries usually don't take donated books for the shelves. Maybe look at donating to a charity shop or a secondhand book shop. Even better, a school teacher. by JellyBiafra54321 (Thu 9th Sep 2021 9:20pm)

  • I believe that was 2018 when I moved here from Texas. I was coming from a gym class and made my way into city centre to get a bubble tea treat for myself. I was shocked at the neon and the drunkenness of what seemed like children. I believe the weekend before or after was an orange march. I was so confused. I was having second thoughts about where I'd moved to. by JellyBiafra54321 (Sat 11th Sep 2021 12:57pm)
  • Then why not stick with the original plan if that's what you're going for? by JellyBiafra54321 (Sat 11th Sep 2021 1:08pm)
  • DELETED Can easily look up Glasgow/Scottish slang. Not that difficult. by JellyBiafra54321 (Sat 11th Sep 2021 1:05pm)
  • Um, I don't recall that ever happening at events like this in Texas as I don't know many people that go around toting automatic rifles or guns for that matter. Events like festivals (have been to several SxSw and ACLs) are usually quite secure. A bit harder for sxsw. Sorry to burst your bubble about life in the US. It's really not all guns and glory like the media would have you believe. by JellyBiafra54321 (Sat 11th Sep 2021 6:52pm)
  • Well, look at that. Seems it's both. Amazing. by JellyBiafra54321 (Sun 12th Sep 2021 5:29pm)
  • How are you correcting the spelling if it's the same letter? As op asked, it's the alphabet song. Do you just switch up the entire ending of the alphabet, including the little bit after you're done with the letters so that it rhymes with "zed?" by JellyBiafra54321 (Sun 12th Sep 2021 5:28pm)
  • That really bothered you, eh? by JellyBiafra54321 (Sun 12th Sep 2021 5:26pm)
  • Just seemed a bit off and rude. Also, cute touch on the Samaritans message. by JellyBiafra54321 (Sun 12th Sep 2021 6:12pm)
  • Nah, I love the winter here. When you're used to 30+ for the majority of the year and either the sun beating down on you or a massive hurricane coming your way (or tornado...or brush fire) winter in Glasgow is delightful. A nice break from the wrath of mother nature. I absolutely love that we have four distinct seasons here. by JellyBiafra54321 (Sun 12th Sep 2021 7:55pm)
  • Okay.... Every single place has veggie options. Most restaurants in Glasgow have veggie options.i can't think of a southside restaurant without a good veggie menu. So close your eyes and take a chance. by JellyBiafra54321 (Sun 12th Sep 2021 9:59pm)
  • I'm just saying, being veggie isn't exactly some new phenomenon. What kind of food do they like? You have people suggesting Indian, Korean inspired, "European"/ pub fare... by JellyBiafra54321 (Sun 12th Sep 2021 10:12pm)
  • What ABC song are you singing where zed rhymes with me? Why are you so anti "Americanisms?" by JellyBiafra54321 (Sun 12th Sep 2021 11:10pm)
  • Wait... Are KFC/McDonald's/pizza hut/Tim Horton's not North American to youβ€½ by JellyBiafra54321 (Sun 12th Sep 2021 11:18pm)
  • You are incredibly anti American it seems. When I moved here I switched from spelling things the "American" way and started spelling things as you do here in the UK. If I switched it up every now and then, it was no big deal. Never got docked for using a spelling that is accepted. At work I do my best to remember too. When I taught at an international school in Mexico, I would never be a jerk about my kids' spelling things the American way or the UK way. It depended on where they were from. No big deal. They're both acceptable. by JellyBiafra54321 (Sun 12th Sep 2021 11:15pm)
  • Thank you for being much more graceful with words than I. They literally asked for veggie options and every single place southside has veggie and vegan options. There's even a café called "veggie and vegan café." by JellyBiafra54321 (Sun 12th Sep 2021 11:24pm)
  • What the fuck are you on about? Look at your message. >Don't think that corner has had an American corporation for a while, and it's died with that. by JellyBiafra54321 (Sun 12th Sep 2021 11:21pm)
  • You were so into making sure you kept "American" things out of your classroom! I'm just sayin'! Apologies if that's not the case. It seems as though you have nothing to actually respond with besides throwing a hissy fit and acting offended, so...okay 🀷🏾‍♀️. by JellyBiafra54321 (Sun 12th Sep 2021 11:37pm)
  • I'm saying North American because Tim Horton's is there and it's Canadian... I'm not being "smart" about it. I just asked why you were saying it wasn't American corporations anymore... Get a hold of yourself. by JellyBiafra54321 (Sun 12th Sep 2021 11:40pm)
  • Are you ..signing into different accounts to downvote a perfectly normal discussion? How odd is this exchange. You literally said there were no American corporations and I asked... Okay, I'll fix you so you can get your panties out of a bunch by JellyBiafra54321 (Sun 12th Sep 2021 11:59pm)
  • Uh, goodnight. by JellyBiafra54321 (Mon 13th Sep 2021 12:06am)
  • Okay...I'm gonna block you now so have fun being a soured cunt on Reddit. You're a fucking weirdo. by JellyBiafra54321 (Mon 13th Sep 2021 12:21am)
  • Oh, I'm sorry that made you feel like an ass. But I think it's safe to say this has probably gone on too long. You have some choices for next. Just know that there's a ton of restaurants, especially lunchtime cafés as one of the downsides is that many close by 4, in the southside and every single one of them is veggie friendly. by JellyBiafra54321 (Mon 13th Sep 2021 8:42am)
  • Oh, I've always loved that graffiti of the young lady. I admire it every time I take the train back down to the southside. by JellyBiafra54321 (Mon 13th Sep 2021 1:39pm)
  • I ate there yesterday! So delicious! by JellyBiafra54321 (Mon 13th Sep 2021 1:44pm)

  • Pizza punks has gluten-free options. Actually a nice, quick Google of "gluten-free Glasgow" pulls up many sites with restaurants listen. You just have to wade through the faff. There's even one with a map. Amazing! by JellyBiafra54321 (Tue 14th Sep 2021 11:22am)
  • I have a friend who is gluten-free and we went to a lovely Italian place in merchant city. Let me see if I can find the name and I'll edit this comment. The Italian Kitchen! Very tasty and nice service. Pizza Punks is also good, but I'm not gluten-free, so I don't know about the tastiness of those options. by JellyBiafra54321 (Tue 14th Sep 2021 11:35am)

  • This seems like it's exactly what I need. Would you say £60 is a pretty decent price for the pre-existing condition option or is that crazy? by JellyBiafra54321 (Fri 17th Sep 2021 8:23pm)
  • Oh, that sounds wonderful! Thank you! by JellyBiafra54321 (Fri 17th Sep 2021 8:22pm)
  • Aw, I'm so sorry that your dog is no longer here! That's great to know though. I definitely know the heartbreak of losing an animal; I only had my cat for a little less than three years before she passed back in 2012. It's taken me until now to be ready to take on another pet! I'm always drawn to the golden oldies that need a nice, retirement home. by JellyBiafra54321 (Fri 17th Sep 2021 9:12pm)

  • I understand wanting to know how your wee one is doing, but phoning everyday is a bit wild. Oooof. Phoning everyday is wild. You're not the only parent who has been worried, but if you egg the behaviour on it'll remain the same or get worse. Your little one will be fine. You'll have to get used to it eventually! by JellyBiafra54321 (Wed 22nd Sep 2021 5:08pm)
  • Excuse me? Just saying that as a former teacher (both early years and primary), it was the parents like you who stalled children's growth. What a crappy reply. • Okay, I know you get downvoted quite a bit for your blunt comments, but I find you absolutely hilarious. Always laughing at some of your toes by JellyBiafra54321 (Sun 3rd Oct 2021 12:22pm)
  • I definitely agree. There was a discussion on here a couple of months ago about them and I mentioned them coming across as incredibly insufferable. People didn't like that. Now it seems like they're causing more unnecessary drama within their community. by JellyBiafra54321 (Sun 3rd Oct 2021 12:36pm)
  • This is exactly what I was thinking. How does this business actually work? Are there that many supporters helping to pay for rent/wages/utilities/food, etc. if they are truly pay-what-you-can? by JellyBiafra54321 (Sun 3rd Oct 2021 12:58pm)
  • WHAT?! I don't think I've read about that yet, just the whole handcuff key bit.. I know one of the owners is a young American from the northeast (I think) and a lot of the discourse around their beliefs seems to stem from issues that are predominantly relevant to the police in the US. I realise that there are issues here too, but to bring that over here is just silly. They just seem to want attention and to not actually listen to the people they claim to support. But shit through letterboxes... My goodness. by JellyBiafra54321 (Sun 3rd Oct 2021 12:55pm)

  • I read about it being short long black and the outwith books. The graffiti written on the walls of one of the businesses matches the graffiti on the boards at pink peacock apparently. Here's a photo of comparison: https://twitter.com/JohnKim86858970/status/1444325728162570240?s=19 by JellyBiafra54321 (Sun 3rd Oct 2021 5:30pm)
  • I hadn't heard of or seen the tagging before seeing this tweet and I walk by the area quite often as I live in one of the surrounding neighbourhoods. It would be a bit more believable if the businesses spoke up about it happening, although I understand they may have gone to the police first. Hopefully someone will help clear the air within the next few days by giving a public statement on what's really going on. by JellyBiafra54321 (Sun 3rd Oct 2021 5:55pm)

  • That last bit made me laugh. A lot of issues stem from landlords raising rents and/or property values going up so that renters and homeowners in the area can no longer afford it. That's the main issue along with small businesses (non-coffee, mom and pop type shops) are often priced out too. by JellyBiafra54321 (Sun 3rd Oct 2021 9:12pm)
  • What more could we do for them? There are so many places for them to seek help and a lot of money has been spent in the area to help make it more attractive. I'll get downvoted to hell for this, but it's not like we can hire cleaning help to follow a lot of them around. Many of those in the community don't keep it tidy and are known to fly tip and just live in squalor as a way of life. by JellyBiafra54321 (Mon 4th Oct 2021 2:11pm)

  • I'm also from the US, and a black American woman at that, but even I can tell the difference between police here and police back at home. • There have been a ton of posts since the beginning of this year asking about rental properties. There have been a million posts within the past couple of months referring to the chaos of renting. You seem to have tried everything you can within Glasgow, so your only option is to look outside of Glasgow. It's super easy to get around these parts. Living in the outskirts isn't going to be that much of a pain if you can't find something. Unless someone here has a spare room or flat to rent out to you, I'm not sure what else you're expecting. Definitely take the advice to look outside of the city. by JellyBiafra54321 (Mon 11th Oct 2021 8:46pm)
  • No clue. Are you taking about the ones on langside? They've been gone for ages now. I moved from that area over to Mount Florida and within a couple of months of me moving here, they also removed the ones right off the station on Battlefield Road! When I first moved here, I went to the one off of Sauchiehall street and bought myself a £3 3 musketeers as I was feeling homesick and I figured I treat myself. It was the most disappointing, stale piece of shite that I'd ever tasted. I'm absolutely baffled how they stay in business. Although I've learned my lesson (I bought a 3 musketeers at one once bc I was homesick...it was stale) I'm not going to turn up my nose at those that want to experience it. Also, there are great brands of American chocolate, but they're all quite small in comparison to the big corporations. • Totally agree. Something tells me his upbringing wasn't 'tough' but moreso he had no discipline and his parents were incredibly lazy at actual parenting. Most likely the type to quickly blame everyone but themselves. I mean, the guy was running around with his friends just days after being bailed out for injuring another teen with a knife?! My ass would have been sat at home under strict supervision. by JellyBiafra54321 (Sat 23rd Oct 2021 8:48am)
  • I'm a bit confused on what point you're trying to make here. Are you blaming society for the fact that the government provides housing to those in need and the people that were given a home, education at the local school, and no doubt other resources , are still not responsible for their actions? I honestly don't understand the whole 'society failed them' discourse. How exactly? Seems like his parents/family failed at raising a decent human. by JellyBiafra54321 (Sat 23rd Oct 2021 8:52am)
  • Wait, what? >young men not being afforded the opportunities that are available to those who are more financially comfortable or indeed live in better postcodes. Education is free for Scottish people! No matter if he went to uni or college or whatever. They are literally handed these opportunities, they just need to apply themselves! I sit here, as an American who has now lived here going on four years, just completely baffled at this thought. There are so many opportunities handed to the people of Scotland, but the finger pointing at the government still rages on. This kid, and his family, had so many ways to break the cycle of being absolute cunts, but chose to live a life of shitty behaviour. by JellyBiafra54321 (Sat 23rd Oct 2021 8:57am)
  • I am just scrolling and scrolling and I have to say that I am so sorry that there are people still sitting here trying to tell you you're wrong or that you don't understand. I simply can't understand how people are still trying to blame the government. The youth of Scotland have sooooo many opportunities to get out of the cycle of gang life. Education is free! No one has to resort to stabbing people. At all. by JellyBiafra54321 (Sat 23rd Oct 2021 9:03am)
  • I am so sorry, but I don't understand. Are you trying to say that anyone who believes that you can choose to not live a life of shitty behaviour by bettering yourself in life by accepting the *free* opportunities available here in Scotland is a tory-loving fanny? What more do you want?! At some point people need to take responsibility for their actions and not just sit there and point the finger at the government. by JellyBiafra54321 (Sat 23rd Oct 2021 9:07am)
  • Fucking hell. His family are not innocent. They let the kid out to run the streets again right after posting his bail for slashing another kid! by JellyBiafra54321 (Sat 23rd Oct 2021 9:10am)
  • I think you work with those needing help, correct? I may be wrong there. People have choices. We can cannot always point fingers at 'society' and 'the government' for things like this. Scotland is not perfect, but there are soooo many opportunities given to people here that are completely out of reach from others in different countries, even places like the US. The housing schemes, free education, countless charities that provide resources, and as part of the information sector I have to say that the libraries here are absolutely top notch with offering guidance. At some point people need to apply themselves. The work you do is valuable, no doubt (I really hope I'm right about this...), but eventually those who need assistance will have to learn the skills to be a positive part of society instead of constantly relying on others by JellyBiafra54321 (Sat 23rd Oct 2021 12:03pm)
  • Thank you so much for the rundown. Things were getting a bit confusing with all of the stabby teens. >Justin (14) was granted bail, and told not to make contact with the 17 year old. This really bothers me. If I was in this situation, my parents would have not only made sure I had no contact with the 17 year old, but also no contact with any of my little friends until after things were settled. Honestly, who let's their young ten back out on the streets days after having to bail them out for a knife crime?! by JellyBiafra54321 (Sat 23rd Oct 2021 12:08pm)
  • So, I'm not only an old 30sething, but I'm also not from the UK. The drill scene? Are we really trying to blame music? I thought we were over that. by JellyBiafra54321 (Sat 23rd Oct 2021 12:24pm)
  • My god, you're miserable. by JellyBiafra54321 (Sat 23rd Oct 2021 12:30pm)
  • Last night I passed by some lovely new planters that were donated by the council on the Bolton street triangle in Mount Florida. Of course, some complete idiot decided to drive up onto the triangle in between two of the planters. I mentioned how nice the planters were on a neighbourhood fb post about them and then threw in that someone was already ruining it by parking between them. The owner of the car responded and basically complained that there was no parking for them when they came home last night. I told them there was parking a few streets away and that's the price you pay when you choose to have a car in an area with limited street parking (and right up against a train station...). She then said that her partner had mobility issues. This morning as I was walking my dog I just happened to see both her and her partner. They said goodbye and he jogged over to the car and left with it. People are going to be shitty no matter what. This COP26 will only lead to the council throwing up band aids and lazy people ruining shit because of selfishness. by JellyBiafra54321 (Sat 23rd Oct 2021 2:13pm)

  • The problems with govanhill is mostly the residents, landlords and businesses not giving a shit. The council aren't the ones dumping prams, mattresses, and the like on the pavement. The council aren't the ones setting bins on fire in the park. So much money has already gone into fixing up the neighbourhood. It's on to the residents at this point. by JellyBiafra54321 (Sat 23rd Oct 2021 3:53pm)
  • People are either extra daft or have it in for me for being blunt. Govanhill isn't the fault of the government. Am I wrong to say that money has been poured into the neighbourhood? At what point do people start to take responsibility for themselves? by JellyBiafra54321 (Sat 23rd Oct 2021 6:18pm)
  • Loads of young ones not wearing masks, I definitely agree. But there's definitely grown adults not giving a shit either. Who the hell are these absolute cunts downvoting facts?! by JellyBiafra54321 (Sat 23rd Oct 2021 6:25pm)
  • If it's a community then, yeah, call your filthy neighbours out and tell them you'll notify the council. Would you like police officers/council wardens or whatever to stand around handing out tickets 24/7? That's several more salaries coming from the council to correct something as silly as flytipping. Tell your neighbours to stop being nasty. by JellyBiafra54321 (Sun 24th Oct 2021 12:58pm)

Hopefully you can beat the rush to find accommodation at the beginning of the year as many students/international students have been told to stay put until the new year as there's no places for them to live. You'll find something short-term hopefully! And then be settled by January. by JellyBiafra54321 (Mon 25th Oct 2021 8:45pm)

  • Oh the Edinburgh one is miles better! It's just nice to have an option in town that isn't St Enoch. Plus, there's a lovely lady that sells delicious fudge at the George Square one and it's a bummer that I may not see her ...totally forgot the name of the shop! by JellyBiafra54321 (Wed 27th Oct 2021 6:22pm)
  • We were told that too as children, but I think they're being recognised as a legit career move back in the states (at least where I'm from) as they make a good wage and have great benefits as they are state employees with wonderful health insurance. The health insurance thing isn't an issue here, of course, but the wages are really *really* good and that would definitely make a difference if they received higher pay here. The question is, can GCC afford to offer higher wages after screwing over women workers and having to make up for that? by JellyBiafra54321 (Fri 29th Oct 2021 11:01am)
  • >...so how did he manage to capture her? Do you believe that they slept together? What the hell are you trying to get at here? Do you have some sort of cringe YouTube channel? by JellyBiafra54321 (Sat 30th Oct 2021 9:02pm)
  • The job market is not that dire at all. Like the other commenter said, there are loads of hospitality and retail jobs, especially in the run-up to the holidays. by JellyBiafra54321 (Tue 2nd Nov 2021 12:07pm)
  • I absolutely agree with you, especially with how people throw in her Asperger's... Who cares?! As if that makes her amazing. It's been done before. She's nothing special. by JellyBiafra54321 (Tue 2nd Nov 2021 6:18pm)
  • Hold up... She's not a "kid" anymore. by JellyBiafra54321 (Tue 2nd Nov 2021 6:23pm)
  • They're comment was obviously triggering. I'm from the states too and I've never experienced bams setting them off with disregard like they do here. From cars? Off busy roads and in bins? Sure that shit happens everywhere, but it's rampant here. by JellyBiafra54321 (Tue 2nd Nov 2021 6:44pm)
  • Okay, this is weird. I don't celebrate now that I live here, but back in the states it's a great day for a BBQ and the pool. Cringe to be all "I don't associate with America!", at least that's what I get from the weird side comments. Agree with the fireworks thing though. by JellyBiafra54321 (Tue 2nd Nov 2021 6:51pm)
  • I'm lucky enough to not know anyone who worships the flag or the country. That may be to being a Black American with family that had to fight for civil rights because of other shitty Americans though. The 4th is just a chill day to eat good and swim. It's weird reading people on UK threads trying to fit in by being anti-america. Not saying that's what you're doing, but you'll find that in quite a bit of them. Funny because the UK is the OG asshole. But the fireworks thing here is out of control, agreed. by JellyBiafra54321 (Tue 2nd Nov 2021 7:14pm)
  • I don't know. I have serious issues with who gets to be deemed a child in the media's eyes. It's incredibly telling for some people in society who gets a pass and who doesn't because they're "just a kid." Anyways, I'm not comfortable with the Greta worship. I'm right there with this guy wondering why another activists aren't lauded as being worthy of praise. by JellyBiafra54321 (Tue 2nd Nov 2021 9:22pm)

  • £900 for a 3 bedroom in the southside? That's not realistic. by JellyBiafra54321 (Mon 8th Nov 2021 12:46am)
  • I pay £475 for a one bedroom and that is ridiculously cheap for Mount Florida. Does it have to be Southside? You'll have better luck with that range East or way south. by JellyBiafra54321 (Mon 8th Nov 2021 1:13am)
  • It's funny that it's downvoted...people are so dumb to not realise that Victoria road is an absolute shithole when it comes to litter. It's always in a state. The asshole gentrifiers can't handle the truth. And yeah, a lot of the streets are quite grim here in Glasgow. by JellyBiafra54321 (Mon 8th Nov 2021 3:21pm)
  • It's so weird to see downvotes when the obvious issue is clearly laid out. It *is* the people. Yes, there's a strike, but this place is nasty all of the other weeks out of the year. by JellyBiafra54321 (Mon 8th Nov 2021 4:08pm)
  • Perhaps you could turn it down. It's so gross when people go the route of "people make noises in flats" and act like there's no solution. Be considerate. Don't be a prick. by JellyBiafra54321 (Mon 8th Nov 2021 4:13pm)
  • >but people should be allowed to watch their TV at whatever time they want without the threat of an asbo People should also be allowed to sleep when they need to. It goes both ways; be respectful of your neighbours especially if you live in a flat. by JellyBiafra54321 (Mon 8th Nov 2021 4:11pm)
  • Do you have a person in mind that you would cheer that's a former PM? by JellyBiafra54321 (Mon 8th Nov 2021 6:11pm)
  • 0830 is perfectly fine. They'd be up too if they're in the kitchen and can hear it. by JellyBiafra54321 (Tue 9th Nov 2021 10:53am)
  • So frustrating to see downvotes on this. You have people pissed off and laying on the horn because the bin men are picking up their rubbish and they just have to drive to work and more than likely will buy some sort of plastic encased food/drink, yet still point the finger at everyone/thing but themselves while moaning about climate change. As an aside, I'm constantly in disbelief at the amount of single occupant drivers around as I am used to having to drive in Texas because our transport options were poor quality and few and far between. We had HOV (high occupancy vehicles) lanes that encouraged car pooling and people actually utilised it. I am loving not having a car here and really appreciate the options to get around (the bus services could definitely be improved though...), and I am so annoyed at the amount of cars in my neighbourhood...I live right by a train station. Yes, I realise having a car is great for getting to more remote areas/areas that don't have a station nearby, but come on... Whatever. I just went off. Not much will change. by JellyBiafra54321 (Tue 9th Nov 2021 11:03am)
  • Or you could perhaps say, "no" when dealing with plastics aimed at kids from McDonald's or whatever. Buy them toys that last. Make stuff with them from recycled goods. Buy from secondhand shops. There's a kinderhandle off cathcart that is completely secondhand clothing and toys just for children and it's all in great condition. Loads of excuses from everyone. by JellyBiafra54321 (Tue 9th Nov 2021 11:06am)
  • Yeah, okay. by JellyBiafra54321 (Tue 9th Nov 2021 11:56am)
  • Had a friend who was waiting for someone in the neighborhood (Shawlands) to pick her up to go to Wagamama... Why would you actually *want* to drive and park in city centre when it's literally a 10 minute train ride away?! by JellyBiafra54321 (Tue 9th Nov 2021 11:56am)
  • Wow. You're very very very sensitive. I'm so so so sorry you're feeling fragile. People like you are the real problem when it comes to climate issues. Always an excuse. by JellyBiafra54321 (Tue 9th Nov 2021 4:28pm)
  • Oh, okay. Thanks for letting me know that my former career was a figment of my imagination. Cunt. by JellyBiafra54321 (Tue 9th Nov 2021 4:26pm)

  • Thank you for being clear, concise, and reasonable because I definitely wasn't and I'm not when it comes to these issues. No one, aside from those with mobility issues/medical issues and those that use their vehicle for work (handy people/lorry drivers, etc.,) needs a car here. There's always an excuse. It's ridiculous. by JellyBiafra54321 (Tue 9th Nov 2021 8:03pm)
  • I never hear my upstairs neighbours wash going outside of the kitchen, and even then it's not bad. I live in a tenement flat. by JellyBiafra54321 (Tue 9th Nov 2021 8:05pm)
  • Nope, I feel the same. Loads of selfish assholes can't handle being told to readjust their lives to save the planet. And those in charge love money too much. We're fucked. by JellyBiafra54321 (Tue 9th Nov 2021 8:13pm)
  • All three. by JellyBiafra54321 (Tue 9th Nov 2021 8:29pm)
  • The washing is the least of my queries with this new neighbour. He walks sharply and hard... It's unsettling at times. And the previous owner was a landlord who decided to lay laminate down with shitty underlay. Ugh. I haven't spoken to him yet, but now I have to as I've noticed my ceiling leaking in my bathroom. Ugh. Tenement living. by JellyBiafra54321 (Tue 9th Nov 2021 8:28pm)
  • My god, can you stop following my comments and being a fucking creep? Someone (you?) claimed that they hated that McDonald's marketed plastic toys to kids and it was hard to say no to them. Honestly...get off my ass, creep. by JellyBiafra54321 (Tue 9th Nov 2021 8:26pm)
  • What the fuck do you have to do with anything I've written? You're pathetic. by JellyBiafra54321 (Tue 9th Nov 2021 8:31pm)

  • What really grinds my gears are the assholes who drive large, Texas-sized pickups. I've only seen a handful, but they're just absurd here. by JellyBiafra54321 (Sat 13th Nov 2021 5:15pm)
  • Ugggghhhhhh. Once again, people are downvoting you because you're realistic. The transportation here isn't as terrible as people make it out to be (aside from the bus prices...) and people are just gonna moan about *needing* their car and nothing will change. by JellyBiafra54321 (Sat 13th Nov 2021 5:47pm)
  • >Definitely wouldn’t ever drive anything else There it is right there. The reason we won't ever get out of this mess. Absolutely selfish. There's no need for one at all, especially with the infrastructure here. by JellyBiafra54321 (Sat 13th Nov 2021 11:45pm)
  • Neds haven't gotten richer, they just know how to work the system even better than before. by JellyBiafra54321 (Sun 14th Nov 2021 2:34pm)
  • It's a shit thing to have happen to you, but consider it a lesson learned. To not think this could happen in Glasgow/Scotland/the UK is incredibly ignorant. by JellyBiafra54321 (Mon 15th Nov 2021 6:07pm)
  • The subway is just wee circle and dogs are not allowed unless in a secure carrier. It's really not some massive eye-watering issue. by JellyBiafra54321 (Mon 15th Nov 2021 6:19pm)
  • The city is incredibly walkable. It's not that big. Just utilise the trains and buses and you'll be fine. by JellyBiafra54321 (Mon 15th Nov 2021 6:17pm)
  • Trains are fine. Bus is at driver's discretion (usually don't care). Subway is a no go. by JellyBiafra54321 (Mon 15th Nov 2021 6:16pm)
  • I know I'm late to the party here, but this still reeks of you wanting to be in a trendy area for a low price. Firstly, three bedrooms for two people? Come on. Also, wanting to be near a park? You're in Glasgow. The city with some of the most green spaces in the UK. You'll always be near some kind of park. by JellyBiafra54321 (Tue 16th Nov 2021 5:35am)
  • I'm sorry, but this is...weird. This smells of men in vans with candy. Not victim blaming, but wut?! by JellyBiafra54321 (Tue 16th Nov 2021 12:56pm)
  • Paisley *is* close to town. If you limit yourself, you'll just keep feeling shut out. Seems you may be the one making it difficult, or at least partly. by JellyBiafra54321 (Tue 16th Nov 2021 10:06pm)
  • I have a wee, old dog I adopted and she's on lead at least 99% of the time. I let her off right as we're rounding the corner back to the flat, and I have no issues about her running off (she walks about a meter in front of me and constantly checks to make sure I'm still there), but she's reactive towards other dogs and will bark at them and make like she's big, bad and tough (she's the opposite). This can scare both other dogs and people. It really bothers me when random dogs come up to her because who knows what'll happen?! It's just rude. by JellyBiafra54321 (Sat 20th Nov 2021 4:43pm)
  • I totally understand what you mean, but I'm actually really thankful for some places letting dogs in. I'd have no social life if this wasn't so. I just adopted an old, wee dog and she's not doing too well on being separated from me. We're working on it, but for those times I just want to grab a drink with a friend, I'm happy about it. I wouldn't want to be selfish and subject my neighbours to her barking while I'm out. by JellyBiafra54321 (Sat 20th Nov 2021 4:45pm)
  • I understand the frustration! It may be more of the fact that you're international tbh. If you have no guarantors that are family in the UK, then you'll need to offer to pay 6 months rent upfront. I did this as an international student on a master's and was able to secure a one bedroom for myself. Other tips on here are incredibly helpful too! by JellyBiafra54321 (Sat 20th Nov 2021 7:05pm)
  • It's been four years since my mom passed away. I still shake my head in disbelief that she's gone. It's real tough. It'll eventually come in waves, but they start to calm as time goes on. I'm not usually in the west end, but I work in city centre and would be more than happy to meet for a cup of coffee/a pint when you're free. by JellyBiafra54321 (Wed 24th Nov 2021 9:43am)
  • You know, I've not bought anything here for my hair; I usually just order online or pick something up when I'm in London. I'm sure there's something though! by JellyBiafra54321 (Thu 25th Nov 2021 9:31pm)
  • I would love to provide family recipes too if you have a gap anywhere. My dad's wife is from Louisiana and makes amazing Cajun food. I am pretty sure you'll understand me saying needing to say this.... we're Black American, so there's definitely some differences! by JellyBiafra54321 (Sun 5th Dec 2021 2:46pm)
  • Hi! Glasgow Caledonian University's library is open to the public and you are more than welcome to use our study spaces! You don't need a student ID to use it. Just walk right on in and if you need help figuring things out, just ask the team at the reception desk. If you want to check out any books, you'll need to apply to become a community member, or you can access our books via sconul if that's up and running again. It's open until 11 on Fridays and from 10-6 on the weekends. by JellyBiafra54321 (Sun 5th Dec 2021 3:09pm)
  • Complain to them via Twitter DM. I've gotten both a refund for my activated tickets and free all day passes. Have I used the all day passes? No. It's impossible to organise a day around their shit service. But at least the tickets are there if I get desperate. by JellyBiafra54321 (Mon 6th Dec 2021 3:57am)

  • Thanks for this! I love all of Alexander Thomson's work and I've sadly never seen the Egyptian Halls since I moved here three years ago. All of the businesses occupying the ground level are all shite. I hope this is a beginning to the end of the embarrassment of Union Street. by JellyBiafra54321 (Wed 8th Dec 2021 1:25pm)
  • >On the other hand, Glasgow is also a really nice city and I've heard some great things about it. Have you actually visited or are you going by travel brochures or whatever? Glasgow has a lot of issues, but I do love it. I definitely wouldn't call it 'nice' though. by JellyBiafra54321 (Wed 8th Dec 2021 1:42pm)
  • Some people don't celebrate and would like to make the extra money. Some people are lonely during the holidays and would like to get out and see a movie. It shouldn't be required for employees to work, but if the rota is scheduled in advance and there's enough employees who would like to work, it's not a problem. Kinda selfish being on one end or the other. by JellyBiafra54321 (Thu 9th Dec 2021 10:35am)
  • >are doing our bit to gentrify Shawlands. Are there enough coffee shops for ya yet? by JellyBiafra54321 (Sat 11th Dec 2021 1:00pm)
  • This question seems quite silly. If you've never visited and never looked into the way of life here in Glasgow maybe it's not for you. A simple ask of your potential colleagues or a Google search would make you a bit less out of touch. by JellyBiafra54321 (Sat 11th Dec 2021 1:10pm)

  • It's not easy renting as an international student. You'll need family in the UK to act as a guarantor or you'll need to find a landlord willing to let you pay 6 months rent upfront. It's nothing like renting in the US. And rent prices are insane. And places are few and far between. Use the search bar and you'll see. by JellyBiafra54321 (Wed 22nd Dec 2021 3:15am)
  • I made the move three years ago initially as a student. No other US students from my course were able to stay. It is incredibly difficult to find accommodation outside of the student halls and even more difficult to find a sponsored job as a graduate. Loads of hoops to jump through. I'd recommend not trying to bring all of your belongings over besides necessities. Especially if you're just here as a student. You're more than welcome to DM me about any questions. by JellyBiafra54321 (Wed 22nd Dec 2021 10:42am)

  • my wee, old rescue has this issue too. I use borrowmydoggy.com to find epople and it has worked out fantastically! I have a membership and also only choose people that are premium members so that I'm covered if something goes wrong while on their care. I've met some great people and they've really helped on days where I have to go into work. I also have a great close of neighbours who all love her and will watch her if necessary. They also realise that she's learning to be alone so they have been incredibly accepting for when she's barking on my short days at work when I have the dog walker come. I also have a neighbour around the way who has a dog that suffers from it too; we have arranged to be each others' dog sitters if necessary! • as a neurotypical adult, this also sounds like how I was when I was little. I was shy. I would rather be reading and near my mom. Sure, get your kid tested for autism, but just know that it can simply be that they have no interest in hanging out with other kids. btw, I'm fine in the company of other humans outside my family now. not willing to play a game of football or anything, but I tolerate other humans just fine if needed. by JellyBiafra54321 (Wed 26th Jan 2022 1:28pm)

  • yup. my dog is an old grouchy little thing and she only really likes other humans. she'll sometimes tolerate other dogs, but they usually just exist in the same place. she has no want or need to play with other dogs at her grumpy state. She's a rescue and she's been through a lot, so o want to make sure she's always comfortable, but it's impossible to do that when others are so irresponsible by JellyBiafra54321 (Wed 2nd Feb 2022 1:36pm)

  • >I’ll be looking for an apartment good luck. prepare to pay 6months to a year upfront, especially as a foreigner if you have no family that could act as a guarantor in the UK. that's even if you get the place. the market is horrendous right now and many won't let to students especially if you're only guaranteed a year here. I'd honestly look for a room on spare room instead of trying to find a place alone. less stressful and hopefully you can chat with people and get not only a flatmate, but a friend! as far as dressing up goes, no one cares! just be you. enjoy what Glasgow has to offer. don't worry about fitting in with how you dress on a night out here. as a someone from there other side of the pond, I'm still a bit shocked at the spray tans and heavy makeup some of the young ones wear here, but I've been told I'm 'fit' as I am🀷🏾‍♀️ by JellyBiafra54321 (Mon 14th Mar 2022 9:48pm)

  • I have nothing to add that's beneficial, but I find it simply absurd that someone from England can just come up and expect social housing because of an offer at one of the fanciest (maybe not the right word...), top tier universities. I get that times are tough, but I know people have been on the list for housing for ages and an offer at uni and deciding to move permanently (because of good night's out? Idk) isn't going to get you anywhere fast. perhaps look at renting a room? by JellyBiafra54321 (Sun 20th Mar 2022 9:48pm)

  • >We have an excellent guarantor so rent wouldn't be an issue. I think the fact that you need a guarantor and are on housing benefits may scare landlords away. it's a shitty time for everyone and the market is crazy atm. a landlord is more than likely going to go with someone who has the funds/ability to pay on their own. • I get that, but the amount of people who seek acne treatment is huge and I'm sure that the reason the long wait isn't because dermatologists are hard-focussed on acne issues. it's not skin cancer. That's all I'm saying. I've not said that no one's mental health is affected. Hell, I have a mole type thing that even my GP wasn't sure of. do you not think my mental health has been a bit shite bc of that? Covid has made the wait times horrendous. That's all. by JellyBiafra54321 (Wed 23rd Mar 2022 12:05am)

Today's conversation also included him telling me that Black Americans miss Trump because of gas prices and how Hunter Biden is using Air Force 2 to get money from China (??????????). I eventually told him I needed to take notes for work on a talk I was giving shortly. • you definitely will have a shit time trying to find a place for you, your partner, and dog if you're only here for a master's program and not working. it's a year. tons of people have been having issues with renting lately, but you never know. all usual routes have already been mentioned. be prepared to pay a few months plus deposit and pet deposit up front if you go with the offer. And if your partner's with you you'll need to pay council tax, but with a discount (25% I think.) students don't pay I found my first place here through spareroom. • I love yuca tacos! they are so nice and the food is quite decent! by JellyBiafra54321 (Thu 7th Apr 2022 9:59pm)
  • there are no actual Mexican restaurants, unfortunately. it's all mostly Tex-Mex, Cali-Mex, New Mexico mex, and...something. The ingredients just aren't as readily available to do a proper Mexican meal. that being said, I've found that [yuca tacos](https://www.yucataco.com/) is quite tasty (home delivery)and [mezcal](https://mezcalglasgow.co.uk/) has some delicious food. [Lupe Pintos](https://www.lupepintos.com/) is okay for some ingredients, but [mex grocers](https://www.mexgrocer.co.uk/) is quite nice if you're okay with delivery of ingredients. by JellyBiafra54321 (Thu 7th Apr 2022 10:05pm)
  • I totally understand. I grew up in Oklahoma and Houston, Texas and lived in Mexico City with family for a spell before returning years later for another couple of years. I miss Mexican food every day. it must be such a shock for your wife to see the produce available here! Tianguis are something I think about often, but I have to remind myself that I made the choice to live so far north! I hope you find something decent! by JellyBiafra54321 (Fri 8th Apr 2022 9:58am)

  • I was able to score a great flat in a desirable location back in December 2020. I was a full-time graduate student at the time with no job and I'm from abroad. I offered 6 months upfront, wrote a letter detailing that I was a mature student who was previously a primary school teacher, and was approved the day I viewed the flat. I rent through phoenix properties. it was no bother at all. I can't really tell you what to do now. apparently things have gotten out of control. perhaps offer to pay deposit and several months rent up front? shouldn't have to, but with people moving up from down south and whatnot, things are getting to be a bit shit. I'm sorry you're having issues, just know it's not impossible! by JellyBiafra54321 (Mon 11th Apr 2022 4:48pm)
  • sure. I wasn't pressured into doing it, but I wanted the place and offered it because I was able to afford it at the time. that was on me, not the agency. by JellyBiafra54321 (Mon 11th Apr 2022 5:04pm)
  • oh for fucks sake. 'it' meaning me being a full time student. edited just for you. Only downvoting because I had the means to pay at the time. Christ, you people are cunts. by JellyBiafra54321 (Mon 11th Apr 2022 10:38pm)

I'm no Glaswegian by any means (I'm a black American woman!) but I definitely understand having to speak a certain way while in certain situations. It truly is like translation. • I'm from Texas. I used to not know anyone with a gun- except my dad, but he was an officer, until my dad got remarried after my mom passed away (cancer not gun violence.) His new wife has a little pistol she carries in her purse. Sure, I grew up with a gun in the house, but it never came to dinner with us or our shopping. It's silly to me too. Not every Texan is a gun nut. Also, I used to teach. Same grade as the children that were murdered. I've lived here since 2018 and I'm quite removed from it, but this really hit me hard. It's weird to read these comments where it seems as though people don't actually care about the humans who aren't gung-ho about guns. Those who do want change. by JellyBiafra54321 (Wed 25th May 2022 8:11pm)
  • this isn't true. • nah, that's not acceptable. I lived and worked in Mexico City for a couple of years and that place was so much cleaner than Glasgow. People take pride in their city. Also, they had actual street sweepers who would go out with branches from trees made into brooms and tidy the leaves and minimal litter. It's just people being nasty cunts here. by JellyBiafra54321 (Sun 29th May 2022 12:20am)

  • the dental hospital is an absolute gem. I was registered with Shawlands dental , but they gave me an outrageous price for a root canal re-treatment. she even told me that the dental hospital wouldn't work on it as it was on one of my back teeth and they don't do those... she lied. they're doing it for free. you just have to be patient because the students are still learning. all of the work is looked after, and sometimes done completely, by a practising dentist. • USA (Texas)/Mexico (Mexico City): Tex-Mex is pretty much nonexistent, but mezcal is good. The guy who used to run the Luchador has reopened as a "Tex-Mex" restaurant and it's offensive. Seems as though they don't actually know what migas are or how to whip up queso dip. they also offer a sad selection of breakfast tacos, but the whole point of breakfast tacos is to create your own with a set of basic ingredients. The salsa selection is poor. BBQ doesn't actually exist here like it does in the states. Mexico: yucatacos is good, but it's not authentic. I haven't been to Bibi's. by JellyBiafra54321 (Sat 11th Jun 2022 1:46pm)

  • mezcal for enchiladas. the beans and rice are decent too, but you'll need to ask for a side of salsa. [Yuca Taco is decent.](https://www.yucataco.com/) the state of Mexican and Tex-Mex in the UK is horrendous. There's a 'new' place in Shawlands called the last rodeo (🀒) that claims to be Tex Mex, but it's far from it. They don't even know what proper migas are. No restaurant here has proper queso (the dip, y'all. not just cheese). your best bet is your kitchen with help from mex-grocer.conlm, Lupe Pintos, and the kindness of your friends and family back home who can send you goods. by JellyBiafra54321 (Sun 12th Jun 2022 4:41pm)

  • I'm American and I did that exact course. I've been here for 4 years now and working full time as both a uni librarian and an archivist. it's not easy. the market is saturated and this course does not qualify as a course that meets the standards for ALA. • >Serving is a massively stressful, ~~high skilled~~, personable job. yeah, it can be stressful. yes, it can be personable, but it's not exactly highly skilled. I waited tables whilst a student back in the States, so I'm used to busting my ass for tips/a living wage. Serving here really isn't that crazy. In fact, it kinda seems super laid back and customer service skills are subpar. I only say this as someone who depended on tips for my wage. by JellyBiafra54321 (Thu 21st Jul 2022 4:36pm)

[Go to the library website and sign up for a community membership](https://www.gcu.ac.uk/currentstudents/essentials/library/usingthelibrary/membership/communityusersform) and then come in and we could get a private room sorted for you. it's nothing fancy, but it has what you'd need for when you're at your wits end. and it's free!!!!! by JellyBiafra54321 (Tue 26th Jul 2022 11:59am)

  • sorry, but loads of people are experiencing this. just keep looking. try looking outside of the westerns/southside/whatever and try looking north or Paisley or somewhere else outside the hot spots. if you're really desperate that won't deter you and the extra but of time to get to uni won't be an issue. once the school year is in session, it won't be as crazy by JellyBiafra54321 (Mon 8th Aug 2022 9:34am)
  • yeah, public transport prices in the UK are ridiculously expensive. the strikes usually happen during the summer, but you always have the bus as an option or vice versa. hence why you're having such a hard time finding somewhere close! When I first moved here I found a place with a family as their lodger via spare room and then moved out once I felt comfortable with which areas I liked which was about 8 months after living here. I can contact her to see if they have a room available or if they're even doing the lodging thing anymore. Sound good? it was near kelvinbridge station. by JellyBiafra54321 (Mon 8th Aug 2022 11:17am)

  • agreed. that kind of attitude is atrocious and speaks volumes about how they view people who simply cannot afford anything more. Tell them to not hop or jump. it's fucking miserable when it's in excess. maybe the person below you doesn't have family to visit. they could be an international student since you said they were studying. it's just common decency. kids getting excited is fine, but the jumping and hopping should be nipped in the bud. you can't cancel out vibrations like that with headphones. my flat will sometimes shake because of my neighbour's stomping around. by JellyBiafra54321 (Fri 23rd Dec 2022 8:27am)

  • I was never a wealthy foreign student. it's wild you would just assume that all international students come from wealth. many of us came over on scholarship or on loans or both. we pay a health surcharge and if we work, we pay national insurance on top of that. and we don't get access to public funds, so if we struggle there's no help available. this is the same for many types of visas. wild to assume this and say they should pay council tax when they already pay astronomical tuition fees. by JellyBiafra54321 (Thu 19th Jan 2023 7:32pm)

  • I think you've mentioned this before... I work with international students at Caledonian. So many of our students, especially those from Nigeria and Ghana, can barely afford accommodation. They are recruited here with hooes of working as nurses and potentially doctors for the nhs. Oftentimes whole communities raise money to help fund their studies. I've had to refer them for help with funding technology to get them through their course. Help with childcare, etc. Many of them are desperately looking for temp work while they study to help with bills. They are not all wealthy Chinese students here for a Western experience. I totally realize that some are wealthy, but this whole thought that every foreign student here is rolling in cash is so wrong. Source: not only do I work with these students, I was one. by JellyBiafra54321 (Thu 16th Feb 2023 6:26pm)
  • This is silly. You know these students bring billions into the economy, no? The people of Glasgow are not subsidizing them. by JellyBiafra54321 (Thu 16th Feb 2023 6:31pm)
  • No clue why you have these downvotes. You're absolutely right. Some people on here seem to really have it in for international students. They are not all one in the same. Many of them struggle. by JellyBiafra54321 (Thu 16th Feb 2023 6:30pm)
  • Reminds me of some media back in the States. "Black man shot by police while walking his dog and eating an ice cream cone was pulled over twelve years ago for going 10mph over the limit. Also made a bad grade in biology in 10th grade. A true thug!" What? by JellyBiafra54321 (Thu 16th Feb 2023 6:57pm)
  • I'd go for it. I've been thinking of getting private insurance myself. I already see an opthalmologist twice a year privately and that's about £150 each visit for a ten minute checkup I went for an eye exam this Wednesday and she's if the optician could refer me to see an opthalmologist on the nhs instead of me starting private he says it's about an 18 month wait! I need to see someone every six months! So I'm in the list, but until then πŸ’Έ There are other specialists I'd like to see, but it's now impossible to talk to my GP! by JellyBiafra54321 (Thu 16th Feb 2023 7:03pm)
  • You're obviously in a place of privilege to write nonsense like this. I have an eye disease that can eventually cause blindness if left untreated. My visual field was progressively getting worse in one eye Wait times for nhs were 18 months to two years. I was able to see an ophthalmologist privately two days after my optician's concerns were raised. But I suppose that if I believed in the sanctity of the nhs I should have just waited it out, huh? by JellyBiafra54321 (Thu 16th Feb 2023 7:08pm)
