  • Corner of GWR and Hamilton Park Avenue. by Jaccident (Sat 5th Jan 2019 4:31pm)
  • I have a three part storm door. On third stays put, the other 2/3 has 1/3 fold back in on the other, then all of that goes into the recess. There are two problems we have: - My partner is a bit nervous and having a remote controlled device is preferable. - the Nightlatch we have is fairly heavy duty, but it has a big profile. But because it's on the first folding section, and prevents it folding flat back on the other third as it's designed, that means the door hardly folds flat at all. So was trying to solve both problems ideally. by Jaccident (Sun 27th Jan 2019 11:34am)

  • You’re right. The mortice in there needs swapped but it’s not a big job. It doesn’t help with my partner (maybe makes it worse even) but completely solves the folding. by Jaccident (Mon 28th Jan 2019 8:28am)
  • In the City Centre my recommendation is The Dhabba in Merchant City. If you can venture the tube ride then Wee Curry Shop on Ashton Lane (70m from Hillhead Station) is BYOB and great. Only seats about 30 covers, so book, but you will have most of the restaurant at 11. by Jaccident (Mon 28th Jan 2019 1:56pm)
  • She’s just so excited. There’s nothing in that video, but her excitement was weirdly entertaining. by Jaccident (Mon 28th Jan 2019 2:06pm)
  • They have two locations (or did). This was the older one, but last summer they gave me a 15% off coupon for their soon to open kiosk on Sauchihall St up by the bars. I never went, it isn’t on my road home. I hope they can start up another kiosk in the local area. The RCS kids seem to love it. by Jaccident (Mon 28th Jan 2019 2:14pm)
  • Two for one on weekdays and weekends before 4pm. Curry club is on Wednesdays. by Jaccident (Mon 28th Jan 2019 2:16pm)
  • Hipsters rocking cut in barber styles and expensive tracksuits? Because these are the only people I see wearing them. [Example](https://i.imgur.com/DkoEvIa.jpg) by Jaccident (Mon 28th Jan 2019 2:22pm)
  • They really are. by Jaccident (Mon 28th Jan 2019 5:50pm)
  • Aye, but they always used to do corkage. Might be worth calling actually OP. by Jaccident (Mon 28th Jan 2019 10:08pm)
  • Oh man, what a shame! by Jaccident (Tue 29th Jan 2019 7:28am)
  • I’m so confused. Syria isn’t in either of those places. Also, despite coverage, Syrians from northern Syria are really quite white. by Jaccident (Tue 29th Jan 2019 8:57pm)
  • Please don’t feel that you’re not a victim if they aren’t a criCriminal, that you don’t deserve support support in this time just because the judge says so. by Jaccident (Wed 30th Jan 2019 10:39am)
  • Call me old fashioned, but in my day, when you stab someone you could pretty much guarantee they weren’t your girlfriend anymore. Flowers ain’t gonna cut it, needs to be a nice meal in the Corinthian or better. by Jaccident (Wed 30th Jan 2019 10:43am)
  • Seconded! If you don’t have any luck there are private halls too all across the west end and north west city centre. by Jaccident (Wed 30th Jan 2019 11:05am)
  • To be fair though, the troops were to quell a return to violence, not the actual violence. They decided they couldn’t trust local troops so it took time to deploy them from elsewhere. But yeah, it was a ridiculous show of strength in the face of very reasonable grievance, which ultimately contributed to the first Labour government. by Jaccident (Thu 31st Jan 2019 8:50am)
  • I don’t disagree. But I will say that whenever I heard about this event growing up it was implied that the troops fought the strikers. I only recently discovered that wasn’t true. by Jaccident (Thu 31st Jan 2019 9:07am)
  • I dunno how you’d classify gla against a zombie airport ;) Source: Berliner too. by Jaccident (Thu 31st Jan 2019 9:05am)
  • It suppose it really depends on where you are, I can get a bus to Rudow and the U from there to Hermannplatz. It isn’t quick per say but it’s regular and easy. by Jaccident (Thu 31st Jan 2019 9:57am)
  • It's what we're doing now though. This consultation is the meeting. If you care so much go submit the consultation form. Btw for the record I was wrong in my last post, I thought Scotland needed a NI style license outside of the designated nights, apparently not. by Jaccident (Wed 6th Feb 2019 9:15am)
  • Can you share why some of it looks like an abandoned assylum, and some of the bathrooms look really recently renovated? by Jaccident (Thu 7th Feb 2019 11:31pm)
  • When I moved back to Glasgow I got two huge lockers in Kangaroo in Shettlestone not £300 for 4 months. Each time I went it was pretty secure, guys running it were nice, and the place was always clean. by Jaccident (Thu 7th Feb 2019 11:38pm)
  • I dunno, could get a judge with a hatred for cabbies. Jury trial is your best bet. Anyone selected as your peer would refuse to prosecute. Jury nullify your way to freedom. by Jaccident (Fri 8th Feb 2019 8:26pm)
  • You might not, but pretty clearly lots of people care. by Jaccident (Sat 9th Feb 2019 10:40am)
  • Anecdote time: I was once hit by a taxi in the cycle lane on University Avenue. On the east end of the road it forks, left to Bank St and right to Park. Unfortunately the muppet who painted the lanes didn’t make the cycle lane contiguous so it’s tricky to move between them, but that’s not actually the problem here. I had just joined the turn right cycle lane when a cab realised he was in the wrong lane and without indicating, looking, or anything akin to safety, changed lanes across the cycle lane and me. I wasn’t badly hurt, but the guy just wound down his window and yelled something a long the lines of “you should be in the cycle lane!” I think University Avenue is a perfect example of someone saying “let’s put in cycle paths” without anyone researching how best to do it. When I cycle in Glasgow there are a few places I see such, and it frustrates. I don’t want to take pole position in front of a car on a hill, but when the council have planned man hole covers I can’t cycle over ever 10m I have no option. by Jaccident (Mon 11th Feb 2019 8:29am)

  • He needs 1 man to go be on camera with him in Benidorm. Also, he’ll clean your windaes. by Jaccident (Mon 11th Feb 2019 9:09am)
  • Is Benidorm the 6th Borough of NYC now? ;) Seriously, good on him if it’s his dream and it doesn’t hurt anyone. by Jaccident (Mon 11th Feb 2019 9:28am)
  • I reported him to the licensing board (is that the correct term? This was ten years ago) and to my recollection by the time they came to review the case he’d retired. Like I say I wasn’t badly hurt (approaching a blind junction I was on my brakes and had one foot down almost, so when he knocked me I came to a hopping skid and the bike moved out from under me) so I didn’t take it any further. My pedal left a mighty gash in his door though. If I remember rightly they aren’t allowed to drive damaged so he definitely had to deal with that. by Jaccident (Mon 11th Feb 2019 9:52am)
  • Like, for my drying? by Jaccident (Mon 11th Feb 2019 11:27am)
  • If I remember correctly both Sports Bar and Campus advertised Beer Pong in the early 2000s (height of frat/stoner US comedies). I saw a younger person recently wearing a beer pong champ shirt with Campus on it, so I guess they still do it? by Jaccident (Tue 12th Feb 2019 12:44pm)

  • Calm you beans bud, I'm a vegan too and your attitude is why everyone thinks we're arseholes. It's not your job to force information down peoples' throats with a thin veneer of sarcasm, hostility and superiority. by Jaccident (Wed 13th Feb 2019 12:15pm)
  • You have every right to disagree. But being condescending, smug, and holier than thou doesn’t achieve anything other than making us look like a bunch of insufferable pricks. For the record, stating what you think and feel, attacking people for “expecting the rest of us to pay for it”, and generally expecting everyone to get over it and accept you have every right regardless of how upsetting you are, IS MILITANT. by Jaccident (Wed 13th Feb 2019 12:37pm)
  • You just self-identified as a troll. Off to fuck with you. There’s no reasoning with trolls as your are enjoying unreasonableness by default. by Jaccident (Wed 13th Feb 2019 12:44pm)
  • The White Pendragons are a far right extremists group who tried to get Sadiq Khan arrested for a crime they made up. To be clear, they didn’t accuse him of a crime, they made up a law and tried to get him arrested for it. The crime was holding political office while muslim. I’m not kidding. by Jaccident (Wed 13th Feb 2019 12:42pm)
  • While I don’t like the words you used, yeah, they are clearly numpties. by Jaccident (Wed 13th Feb 2019 1:15pm)
  • It’s covered in white dragons too, you just can’t see them. by Jaccident (Wed 13th Feb 2019 2:32pm)
  • I think that's the same event. They didn't know how a citizen's arrest worked, so called the police on him. by Jaccident (Wed 13th Feb 2019 2:50pm)
  • Search Sadiq Khan White Pendragons and you'll get multiple videos and articles about the events. It was national news last year. by Jaccident (Wed 13th Feb 2019 7:11pm)
  • It's great, reminds me of early days FluxFM. u/LozPacitti any plans to integrate the station into TuneIn, I don't know what broadcast programme you're using but the API seems pretty basic. I use TuneIn a lot because it's integrated into Google Home ("ok google, play LP Records on TuneIn"). As the app doesn't support AirPlay or Casting this would be my only option for playing on any speaker worth listening to music on. by Jaccident (Wed 13th Feb 2019 10:51pm)
  • Don't be an insufferable jeb. The whole point of this is to make it clear to people that the store is in jeopardy in the hope they adjust their behaviour. Calling the first, divey location, in the other half of an electrical substation, of a Barras stall, "wanky, West End" anything, is just ignorance. Fopp was a national chain out of Glasgow, that grew from here, and rightly people were proud of that. They are sad to see that go. The zealous categorisation of anything in the West End as "pretentious" or "wanky", regardless of reality, by certain people on this board, comes off as sour grapes. There's plenty to legitimate rip into about the West End, your blind flalling at anything 'West End related' makes you sound skipping records. by Jaccident (Thu 14th Feb 2019 7:54am)

  • What sort of lunatic wants to live in a dangerous city? God man, pull yourself together. I bet you walk down the street just jonesing for an excuse to shoot a sixteen year old, back kid as he runs away. Stand your ground somewhere else please. by Jaccident (Mon 18th Feb 2019 12:58am)
  • That's where the kids come from, yes. by Jaccident (Mon 18th Feb 2019 1:07am)
  • I agree with this for the morning, but the issue may be that there is a problem in the afternoon when OP finishes up. If OP can train back home that might help. /u/D092 , try looking in Anniesland and Kelvindale maybe. Both have rail links for the road back, and the straight shot along Great Western Road may seem hilly for first couple of times but you'd be surprised how easy it is on the way into town (downhill most of the way to work for you). by Jaccident (Mon 18th Feb 2019 10:16am)
  • I don't know specifically what 3D motion graphics entails but I used to lecture on, amongst other things, character art and animation for Video Games (am a developer), and will say knowing which part brings you joy will be very important to knowing whether a course will meet your needs. Glasgow Uni has it's games development club, I know there are a bunch of 3D artists who dip in and out there, and I'm sure you could get some contact time with a more experienced person there. If you let me know what aspect of 3D is of interest to you I can recommend some courses perhaps. BTW, web development alone is dull as pond water (imo, YMMV, no offence etc.)!unless you are super into UI/UX Dev. If you want to sit on the technical side of web development, as someone recommended, there are courses on a number of web technologies which may stand you in better stead. In my experience a focus on frontend is often only of value to an employer if you clearly understand the tech stack and deployment architecture you're sitting on top of. by Jaccident (Mon 18th Feb 2019 10:26am)
  • Nah man, my car is in the garage till Wednesday. by Jaccident (Mon 18th Feb 2019 3:37pm)
  • I'm no expert but I think that's deep pan not deep dish. Deep dish is more like a pie, where the 'crust' is made of pizza dough, and then filled with tonnes of fillings and topped with Cheese. I'd be surprised if places wouldn't make it for you though. Anywhere with pizza oven (not a conveyer belt like Domino's) should be able to try. by Jaccident (Fri 22nd Feb 2019 9:12am)

  • There's a special arrangement between the uni and the council. The council is investing in surrounding roads to improve the area but uni in return takes responsibility for certain roads. University Avenue is one of these IIRC. What I do know is that cycling infra was a requirement for the council, Byers Rd especially. It would be a shame if the Uni didn't meet the requirement on their side of the deal too. by Jaccident (Sun 24th Feb 2019 10:04pm)
  • I recommend Black&Lizars on Gordon St. The optomotrist was calm and knowledgeable. No hard sell whatsoever. Said my script had shifted but there was no cause to change my glasses. by Jaccident (Mon 25th Feb 2019 9:11pm)

  • We use Time For You Cleaning, the woman who comes is absolutely wonderful, we’d be lost without her when things get busy round here. They sent an admin bod out to meet us, look the place over, understand our needs, then matched us with a cleaner who did what we needed. Rate is £12.50ph. You pay a chunk to the company up front, then £10ph to the cleaner each visit. by Jaccident (Mon 4th Mar 2019 7:54pm)
  • Hey pal, Great concept for a tool, I think this would be really amazing, especially for first-time buyers! I will be encouraging my friend who is just starting her journey to home-ownership to give it a look. **Scottish Localisation Issues** I have bought very recently so simulated my conditions to see what the app suggested. There's definitely an issue where the application isn't sensitive to Scotland's "Offers Over" system. Places can be expected, regularly to go 5-8% over Home Report value at sale, which is skewing your estimates down somewhat in areas that this is common (G12 for example). When searching in Scotland you need to be sensitive not only to the list price but the sale price in historical data AND the Home Report value. I don't know how you begin to scrape this data automatically I'm afraid. As a result the app was suggesting that I would have way more cash available than realistic, as everything over the HR has to be stumped up by the buyer on day one. **UI/UX Issues** * In the data entry phase, there are quite a few steps, which meant that I had a while to realise that the app was suggesting numbers way larger than comfortable because it was working from "max" (for me it was when it suggested a 1400£ mortgage). Salary is a good starting point but I feel like working from Max without getting the user to agree is a mistake. * The nav arrows on the timeline don't feel natural. It's so different to the standard carousel that I kept mousing across to the other side of a card to move back. **Bugs** * During the set up step I could not, no matter what, get a custom number typed in to actually work. I was typing value £256,256 in each time, and got a number of different results. (e.g. £256,125, £256,240) * Once Returned to the dashboard I could see "Life Goals" but couldn't scroll down to see them properly. Firefox Mac 65.0.1 (64-bit) **Notes** * As you are aiming to represent savings etc too, I think it's worth adding the two "real" costs First-time buyers are often naive to, LBTT (Stamp Duty) and Conveyancing Fees. One is obviously an exact figure, the other needs to be a suggested amount. * It breaks my brain a wee bit that the avatar that takes you into the tutorial isn't in the same art style as the rest of the site. * Because the Timeline runs off screen on one side, and to the "You are Here" on the other, the "You are Here" cut off is very severe. I recommend adding an alpha to the items as they reach the edge, perhaps a gental shrink too. by Jaccident (Wed 6th Mar 2019 10:37am)

  • Closing too early can be a curse. A lot of people browse at the weekend, so getting two weekends on the market and looking viable is a great boon to prices. Unless you have notes in and indications that subsequent bids will be in excess of your wildest dreams it’s not in your interest to close immediately. Once the place does go to closing try calling for a viewing under a fake name, then for a repeat viewing. Quality of life is pretty high, if your partner has mobile experience PM me. Generally the mentality in Scotland matches zuid-NL and Flanders. Pretty chill but with loud drunks. It doesn't get as warm in summer, but it is much warmer in winter. As for legal, the Scottish government will still need EU legal experts for a great many years. You can browse these online. Also, there will be a burgeoning UK-EU immigration market if immigration law is in you wheelhouse. by Jaccident (Sun 24th Mar 2019 2:02pm)

Their argument, “you chose to live on Byres Road”, my argument “aye, but the pubs closed 90 minutes ago and your screaming at the tops of your lungs is not only against the law but decency.” Arseholes were flashing and groping women as they walked home past them. Called the coppers who came and sorted it out. Arseholes. by Jaccident (Sat 18th May 2019 12:57am)

  • Speak to the Partick Housing Association. Ward 23 was a trial zone for some rollout of green bins and if you don't have enough that can be fixed (so long as sufficient storage exists for this bins on site). PHA can discuss collections. But you can also call waste management, ask for a query call back, don't complain. The person you then speak to will actually know what is happening. Complaints can be (as in, nearly 100% is) a black hole in the council. Source: Dealt with something in the same wheelhouse last week! by Jaccident (Sun 19th May 2019 10:47pm)

  • I had checked the belt, but not the capacitor. I took it apart and, well, then I realised my mistake. Both my belt, and the belt I'd replaced it with were the same length, which is strange as I did the belt a while ago when it got too loose. So I order one, pop it on, and yeah, I replaced one knackered belt with another knackered belt. So, all works now, and I feel like a right dafty. If you hadn't recommended looking at the capacitor I'd have looked that daft in front of an audience, so thank you so much! by Jaccident (Thu 23rd May 2019 7:13pm)

  • So, I think what people are saying is that, when an organised and paid for event is organised, the organisers should pay for clean-up caused by their disruption. This cost can then be factored into ticket prices and only affect the people attending. Football games, gigs, festivals, the lot. In short, countries which enforce this, Denmark for example, find fans/participants much less likely to leave a sty in their wake. by Jaccident (Sun 26th May 2019 1:37pm)

  • Fun wee story, in the mid-90s i was getting the bus at the shelter across the road and the area around it flash flooded really quickly, so there was me, and 3 old women, huddling together on the 1 sqm of dry pavement, a lost island in the sea, hoping a bus would come before we ~~drowned~~ got our feet soaked horridly. When I got on the bus I dropped my 50p and it rolled off the bus into the world's newest ocean and the bus driver decided that I had to get off, until a friend of my grandmother spotted me and came to pay for me, and spent the rest of the trip telling the bus driver off for being an arse. Moral of the story, First was shite, even when they were brand new. by Jaccident (Sun 26th May 2019 4:37pm)

  • As /u/SirPanic has said “lower your standards as necessary” is really important. Your budget is really low for the west end particularly, I would temper your expectations for a flat at that price. You’re bang on about keeping on top of the listings sites; sack off daily digests and get everything sent to you as it’s posted. Setting up custom zones in RightMove is a great idea too, helps you keep tabs on locations if you don’t have an encyclopaedic knowledge of street names and postcodes. I would make a point of keeping an eye out for local ads on gumtree and in newsagent windows. The finish might not be to everyone’s liking, but there is no denying that the Anderston end of the financial district, where there were less restrictions, looks a lot better than the town end. • Neither of those two statements are true. Catalonia was a independent nation and kingdom for much of its existence, and fully joined Spain (i.e. majority of hostilities ceased) *after* the union of the crowns here. As for the UN, UN status is voted on by two bodies, the first is the Security Council, the second is the General Assembly. Without support you can and will be kept out; most obviously is Taiwan (ROC) is not recognised as a UN member, other examples are Palestine (autonomous region I believe) and Sothern Ossetia (which Georgia, a UN member, doesn't recognise and the SecCouncil is split on due to heavy Russian interference). by Jaccident (Fri 13th Dec 2019 8:24pm)
  • Sorry I misconstrued your sentence. I still don't understand your point regarding self-determination thought, there are still plenty of regions which have unilaterally declared independence and slef-determination, only to not be recognised by the UN. Trade is exceptionally difficult in this scenario, it is the habit of the contesting country to use their size to bully the seceding region's would-be trading partners. I suppose it's theoretically possible for the EU to admit Scotland, but if they risk then losing trade with the rUK, or destablising NI, they may opt not to unless recognised by the UN. In addition, the Catalonia situation remains complex, and Spain don't seem keen to set any precedents. All in all it's a bit of a mess. As frustrating as it may be to those of us who lean toward, or favour, an independent Scotland, patience and process may the the price of a clean break. by Jaccident (Fri 13th Dec 2019 10:30pm)
  • I have lived in London, Portsmouth, Southampton, Oxford, Imperia, Amsterdam and Berlin. While I miss specific things in all those locations I genuinely believe Glasgow is in the top two. People; Glasgow shares an awful lot more in terms of social graces with the Dutch than it does with the English. Where it beats the Dutch in my opinion is that in addition to the civic duty of friendliness Glaswegians also place a high premium on making new friends/acquaintances. Where in the Netherlands people are very happy to chat but view that as a separate thing to the rest of their life, Glaswegians are more likely to bring you in. Places; I love the West End and other than work hardly have cause to leave. I have friends who say the same about Denniston though, and what I take from that is Glasgow having decentralised “character”. When I lived in Oxford I would visit Brum for the IMAX about once a month, and I find this the biggest difference. I do see local boozers in Brum, but in Glasgow there are also small restaurant and bar spots dotted throughout the city, all with unique styles and offerings. That’s not to say the place is all urban, there is plenty of suburbia if that’s your preference. Climate; It rains about as much here as it does in London, difference is that it rains for shorter periods more often. It’s fairly predictable and you get used to it. Much like Brum, a lot of the reputation for weather dates back to the factories pumping smoke into the atmosphere, it’s not completely relevant these days. It doesn’t get as cold here in winter as the West Midlands, and snows less regularly too. Train services are better (none of that Chiltern we forgot winter was a thing pish). It is about as warm in Summer but the days are much longer. Cost of Living; I find in the West End, with Mortgage, Bills and a good social life, you’ll need to be on ~40k. If you live with someone else, that drops significantly. Southside is really coming up and you can knock a fair chunk of that off. Denniston in the East too. My two cents; Glasgow is experienced at it’s best as an Urban place. If you come take at least a year to live in the thick of it. Moving to Glasgow and staying in outer suburbia you will really be missing what it is that elevates Glasgow over the competition. by Jaccident (Sun 15th Dec 2019 11:45am)
  • I’ll that’s days of rain, not minutes of rain on those days. I did try to explain that it rains more often here but for shorter spells. by Jaccident (Sun 15th Dec 2019 12:10pm)

  • It’s in next. Sometimes I put it above Glasgow, sometimes not. My father has lived there most of my life so I’ve been able to see it grow over the decades. I don’t know if I like it as much as it is now. There is also a lot of hostility towards the influx of foreigners, rents are nuts and the locals are still dirt poor by comparison. It really is a shame. If you are going, go now, if you leave it ten years I think it’s not going to be worth it anymore. by Jaccident (Sun 15th Dec 2019 8:04pm)
  • My Mortgage each year is approx your take home. It’s fairly average for a 90sqm flat in the West End. Then you have insurance, factoring and tax on top. Then go out to eat a couple a times a week and have a car and I don’t think my number is car off. by Jaccident (Mon 16th Dec 2019 9:36am)
  • Glasgow; friendly locals mean a lot, decent amenities, parks, temperate climate. Berlin; great amenities, extreme climate (-15 to +35 throughout the year), tough local government, great expat/outsider scene. Be warned, if you find West Enders a bit much you may very much hate the Berlin population. by Jaccident (Thu 19th Dec 2019 12:39pm)

  • Wee bit of backstory/context; Ian Mellis is really good, but they also do cheeseboards. Now a lot of those are preordered and people just need to show up and pay for them. Lots of folk get one, but I know a few people who get one for their parents as a Christmas present (much like a hamper). by Jaccident (Wed 25th Dec 2019 10:12am)

  • Usually you will find a few staff who don’t care, or are happy to get the double pay. I used to know a Jewish guy who loved it. I think it’s important that there are some places open that aren’t pubs, accounting for alcoholics and their friends etc. Granted though, it would be better if less people had to work in general. by Jaccident (Wed 25th Dec 2019 10:18am)

  • Kind of, but kind of not. Sugo don’t have to as there was no easily confusable competition on the market, and they don’t trade at a national level. Therefore there was no reason to push for the trademark. Sugo also doesn’t trade at the national level, but clearly they aspire to, meaning that there now is an easily confusable competitor on the market. However in this instance the onus would be for the new product to select a name that can be enforced at the national level, not for the company to decide to go national and take on all competitors. Fundamentally this is the difficulty with using commonplace terms in your trademark. You will often find it hard to establish yourself outside the local market. **TL;DR. Not ever company is entitled to do this, Sugo MCR had no reason to do it, Sugo Glasgow are being predatory. ** by Jaccident (Tue 31st Dec 2019 10:20am)

  • Hi pal, I’m really glad to read so much support. Truly take this as a sign that the communities around you have your back. Secondly, and I think this is quite important, if your children are in there and she is the sole carer she will at some become known to Social Work. I don’t know which local authority you belong to but the locals are all trying approaches that heavily focus on child safety, and in keeping children in the home. This will be a controversial opinion but I would consider making yourself and situation known to social work. Not only does this unlock access to services and support, but it is better for you if you come forward. Honestly you have my every sympathy, and I’m so glad you could reach out for support. by Jaccident (Tue 7th Jan 2020 8:13pm)

  • There are largely different circumstances though. Take away bulk uplift in, for example, the West End where car ownership is low and student population is high, and you’ll find this backfire fairly spectacularly. There’s no point spending a billion on Byres Road if someone leaves a mattress on the corner every other week. by Jaccident (Fri 21st Feb 2020 12:30am)
  • Aye, not just tenants either. A flat was getting a Reno for sale last month and the workies dumped everything in the back yard of ours. Owner was uncontactable and the workies vanished. So it was left to mugging to sort out. by Jaccident (Fri 21st Feb 2020 12:37am)
  • Vat is more unfair. It’s flat rated, at least council tax is graded to a degree based on size or value of property. I agree though, still seems strange. FWIW the money coming from central is stymied so the have you raise at a local level to maintain service levels. by Jaccident (Fri 21st Feb 2020 12:35am)
  • It’s not true if most people, no, most people have a dial which they turn up and down, but not necessarily a lack. It’s a fine line, lacking in empathy is a learned trait for most individuals so it’s fair game for most people to dislike that in others. Please don’t take that as a comment on you, like I said in my other post, I don’t know you, it’s not my place to judge at all. I think that your examples are shallow to a degree, for example I bought my place but constantly have to organise bulk uplifts for waste that is left by tenanted properties. There will never be an adequate solution to punish those parties, so am I to accept from now on I pay ~£300 a year to not have junk in the back garden? Where in NL this may occur very infrequently due to the higher proportion of semi-detached and detached properties I see it as an unfair, and financially detrimental change of the rules for the many people in situations such as mine. by Jaccident (Fri 21st Feb 2020 1:00am)

  • If the system has been set up correctly then revoking a key should be instantaneous and not require any disruption to existing keys. RFIDs are just a name being broadcast, each key “should” be unique. i.e. BUILDING_FLATPOSITION_KEYNUMBER or CharmingBuilding_Flat8_003 (deliberately made very simple. No key recipe should be that simple). This is then encrypted and you’re off. That means if you know keys 002 and 003 are missing then you remove them and only them from the valid keys list in the door entry system. Mark them as lost and new keys should come with a different key number. by Jaccident (Tue 3rd Mar 2020 1:27pm)

  • So, in principle, it is hard to tell without seeing your lease. If you have a lease only for a room it is contestable that you're not as responsible as the others, it's also worth noting that you can sometimes only be held to the state it was in when you entered the property. This would be overriden if you had, through the signing of the lease, been presented with a schedule which you had to accept. I have taken a flat over from a friend before, and have taken on their schedule as the cost for us to fix the issues was less than the cost to run the inventory process. Also, having been the "last one in" I have made agreements with my flat mates that damages are weighted against them. They didn't exactly like it, but they understood it wasn't my responsibility to pay for damages done by the person they lived with and didn't hold to account. Also, lastly, bear in mind that there's a "reasonable degredation" to factor in. For example, a landlord is expected to paint approx every 3 years or 2 tenants, whichever comes first. Not all do, obviously, but the court will often assume that it's impossible to live in a pristine bubble. Most im\[portant would be that your deposit went to a registered scheme, if it didn't your landlord is liable for a huge fine, so dig out all your communications with them and check. It's often not worth you pursuing (since you don't get the value of the fine, only the value of your deposit with damages) but I have used it to get out of damages I thought were unfair before. by Jaccident (Fri 3rd Apr 2020 12:41pm)

  • I’ve lived in maybe 11 UK cities over the years. Glasgow fits best with Newcastle and Manchester IMHO. The culture, the attitudes, the priorities. Also, regarding city size. People will harp about size, but that’s a fairly arbitrary marker for a lot of uses. Population density is pretty key though. Living on top of people is most likely a bigger part of your experience than Werner the Opera runs 4 shows a year or 6. In terms of city centres, Glasgow very similar to Leeds and Newcastle. In terms of commuter belt, more like Manc. Glasgow has the West End though, which is a bit of a city within the city. The closest thing I’ve ever lived in to the West End, outside of it, is Southsea in Portsmouth. If that makes sense to you, the West End will too. by Jaccident (Thu 11th Jun 2020 11:29am)

They worked with the “no cats” owner to get me in the flat to start with, way above the expected effort. Every issue was dealt with within the day with the exception of one, which hey, couldn’t really be faulted as it was Christmas. When I moved in I offered a £200 deposit for the cat, they refused, instead they stipulated I’m writing that a normal deep clean plus a professional carpet clean was all they needed. During check out they noted a couple wee things BUT said to the landlord that given I had done a bunch of free fixes for them and the close over the year, these were totally offset. • Hey OP, I’m so sorry to hear this, venting is completely normal and I am glad you have somewhere for a rant. Lots of people have said something to the equivalent of “this doesn’t sound racial”, but to you, with your experience in a majority white city, I fully understand why it may seem that’s the reason you would be targeted. Not that it will bring solis, but I’ve been attacked in Glasgow a few times growing up, and the states reason of the random attacker is always different, but the real reason is the same. So many people feel so small, and have such a inverted understanding of self-worth that they can only feel good about themselves at the expense of another. The sad thing is, even if you’re not being called a racial slur, the reason you caught their attention probably is that your black. I’m tall, I get the same negative attention from angry little men. So I can’t promise it won’t happen again, I can’t even promise you Glasgow is getting better, I can promise you though that there is no shame at all in being the victim to an attack like this. The “schools” are - Psychodynamic - Behavioural - Humanist - Cognitive Behavioural Though this may seem daunting it’s really not, all of them are valid ways to look at you; they just approach that from different directions. What works best for you may not work for someone else. And it’s rare that you will find you get *nothing* from a counselling relationship because they will all introduce you to parts of you that you’ve not paid mind to in a while or sometimes ever. Personally I find going to a person-centred counsellor the best start, often they can draw on techniques from CBT etc as they need. by Jaccident (Tue 15th Sep 2020 6:07pm)

  • Just to be clear on the timeline here. 1. She felt unwell. 2. She got a test. 3. She felt better. 4. She travelled to London by Rail. 5. She got the result of the test. 6. She travelled home by Rail. This may seem a bit controversial but #4 is stupidity but understandable stupidity. She felt better and presumably played it down in her head at that point. It‘s #6 that’s the real scandal; to knowingly risk everyone like that by Jaccident (Fri 2nd Oct 2020 1:28pm)
  • To me yes, but I can understand how someone deludes themselves into this. When I say it’s understandable I don’t mean I empathise, but I can appreciate how it gets there. Meanwhile the return journey is something I can’t get behind, I just don’t understand how *anyone* can get to the point where they thought that was acceptable. by Jaccident (Fri 2nd Oct 2020 1:56pm)
  • Oh aye, don’t take my attempting to empathise as my thinking she isn’t anything other than unjustified. She should stand down and that’s that. by Jaccident (Fri 2nd Oct 2020 2:00pm)
  • Original image is, but the digital scans aren’t. It’s counterintuitive but think of the scan like a rendition of a famous song. That song may be in the public domain, but your rendition of it is still under copyright when you publish it. by Jaccident (Wed 11th Nov 2020 12:37am)
  • They don’t inherit the original work, but they do own that specific file still though. That ownership can be licensed, paywalled, whatever they want you’re right that copyright isn’t really the avenue of IP law most appropriate to assess this distribution. If you go through the expense of digitising, and exposing, items like this picture, you are under no obligation to allow free public access. Anyone can use the picture as it is public domain, but that doesn’t mean everyone is entitled to use this file containing the scan of the picture, which remains the property of the digitiser. by Jaccident (Wed 11th Nov 2020 6:33pm)

  • If I’m being honest bud, doesn’t seem like you really care to listen or as though you are willing to change your views, fine, but don’t ask me to debate you on either we’ve really been castrating kids for millennia. by Jaccident (Fri 29th Jan 2021 1:50pm)
  • You said we don’t know the impact of hormone blockers. Hormone blockers are a chemical version of pre-pubescent castration, therefore we do have a decent understanding of long term impact. Which was all I was pointing to originally. by Jaccident (Fri 29th Jan 2021 3:27pm)
  • You know fine well that’s what I’m talking about, we know the long term effects of a 40 year old drug, we know the long term effects of delaying puberty, we know that the NHS is under fire from BMJ and other ethics boards for the process under which their assertions were made. You and I can disagree on a great many things, but the simple fact of the matter is, hormonal inhibition is not a new thing, and even the drug used to inhibit hormones is not a new thing, so regardless of what two lines in one article on the NHS website says (btw, published while they are mounting a legal defence on this topic), we do know as well the impacts of this treatment as not employing it. by Jaccident (Fri 29th Jan 2021 4:53pm)
  • Childhood castration prevents puberty. The technology of adolescent developmental halting may have changed, but the impacts on the individual are centuries established. The technology being used has been used for decades too, just for different purposes. So between those two things that’s the reason it’s not so simple as to say “we don’t know the impacts” because we do know the impacts. by Jaccident (Fri 29th Jan 2021 7:09pm)

Watching them go up Byres Road was so strange. 1999 was such a strange snapshot of time, the last year of a lot of places I went as a kid; Burger King, Echo Records, Woolworths, Le Petit Pain. • Having lived in a fair number of those countries I can tell you that Scotland is not worse. USA is horrific in terms of both street and institutional racism, German is pretty good (but they have very bold skinheads and neos you’ll meet from time to time), and NL is pretty bad for on street racism. Italy is a mixed bag, basically a coin toss that anyone over 60 will say something. France is pretty good. Belgium probably the best, but it certainly felt last time I was there that pockets are becoming ardently anti-Muslim. So yeah, Scotland has it’s racists; but having lived in many of the countries you listed, have POC family, have had POC partners, I can tell you it’s not as rosey as you must believe. by Jaccident (Fri 5th Feb 2021 1:38pm)
  • Really nice work OP, quick bit of feedback based on a local knowledge of the “connections”. I know this isn’t intended to be geographically accurate, but I think these things could bring confusion. Partick is two stations in one building, so a walk symbol is incongruous. St Enoch is south of Central, but appears north here. Meaning that people could exit St Enoch South for the river, and not see signs for Central. Buchanan Street is adjacent to Queen St, the whole the busses are a hike; probably the least confusing though. Could be that the wee walking people have a 1 min, 5 mins, etc. indicator by them. by Jaccident (Sat 6th Feb 2021 9:40pm)
  • With walking time, I often think minutes is preferable, and just use a relaxed pace. 1min for QS, 8min for Bus Station, 5min for Central. The thing is, people are planning their journey in time, not distance, if I am due for a 10:30 train, knowing whether the walk is 5 of ten minutes is a decent size deal. Also, I may live here, but I have no internal sense of yards, same as many don’t have an internal sense of meters. Oh, I think I forwent a bit of local knowledge, Buchanan Street, and St Enoch, are almost exactly equidistant. If you are travelling clockwise it’s quicker to get off at Buchanan, anti-clockwise is St Enoch. There’s barely 30 seconds in it to walk them. by Jaccident (Sun 7th Feb 2021 3:31pm)
  • Are you talking about your crossovers? How are your reverse crossovers? I found nailing the reverse improved my clockwise crossovers. by Jaccident (Mon 22nd Feb 2021 1:51pm)
  • Most find that the constant focus on anti-clockwise skating in effect weakened their right side. So crossovers, right over left, become engrained and the opposite isn’t developed. It’s why I mention the reverse crossovers, getting that movement working in a reverse way can key your brain into being more comfortable forwards and to the right. by Jaccident (Mon 22nd Feb 2021 11:50pm)
  • Can you skate backwards? Reverse crossovers are just crossovers when skating backwards. In generally, taking an action you can do forwards, then do it in reverse, you will get a lot of practice out of it. Edit: Here’s a lovely grandfather showing it off https://youtu.be/ljLUY2S3_g4 by Jaccident (Tue 23rd Feb 2021 12:03am)

  • As someone said, there’s been a bit of a resurgence the last few years; Glasgow has a good few Roller Derby teams, and I think a larger leisure skating movement may have grown in part from there. It makes sense, a lot of players stop for the same reason I did, constant injury. Doesn’t change the fact I live to skate, so I skate for leisure instead. I just wish there was more good concrete to skate on. Outdoor wheels are fine and all, but I miss being able to skate on my good wheels. by Jaccident (Tue 2nd Mar 2021 3:36pm)
  • Not quite. It can prevent unintentional transactions but the attack pattern for a skim attack is to read, then spoof/replay the cards. In this attack pattern the cards are all read in one batch; while your point of sale terminal can only handle one card at a time, the skimmer isn’t limited in this way. So having two cards together only protects you from accidental transactions with mobile point of sale readers, it won’t protect your cards from skimmers as skimmers can read all the cards separately. by Jaccident (Wed 3rd Mar 2021 7:29pm)
  • The protection is two fold for single factor contactless. 1. A per transaction limit of £x based on the risk level a bank is willing to accept. 2. A reauthenticate limit of £y which is how often a user is expected to reinsert and pin their card to be able to make a payment. Phone backed payments (and Watches etc) have none of these limits in some places because they know who you are; this is called a multi factor contactless payment (factor one is a thing you have, factor two is a thing you are). by Jaccident (Wed 3rd Mar 2021 7:33pm)
  • It happens reasonably frequently; tends to be that people target high density locations where people are less likely to track spending, or notice someone milling about. Think Trafalgar Square, The Spanish Steps, etc. There are some brilliant RFID wallets on the market though, a Dutch company, Secrid, make amazing wallets. If it’s a concern you can neutralise that concern for the price of a round of drinks. Alternatively consider disabling contactless on your cards and defaulting to using your phone for contactless payments. by Jaccident (Wed 3rd Mar 2021 7:43pm)

Should the time come, we hope that Rangers fans everywhere will join us in responsible celebrations; it’s been a long season, but the pandemic has been even longer, and we owe it to our communities to protect them with our actions.” Having the team and coach drive to the fans, windows down, encouraging celebration is more or less the opposite of this. by Jaccident (Tue 9th Mar 2021 3:18pm)

  • Yeah, the OV-chipkart is really good, it’s worth noting that the government just mandated it (as well as a number of other things) to make it happen. There is however one thing to note, OV and Oyster were designed for a time when neither cash, nor plastic, could match RFID/NFC for speed. We’ve moved past that technologically now, in London for example you can tap in and out with your standard Debit or Credit card and the same pricing limitations are applied just as long as you use the same card all day. The NL are card averse (outside of Amsterdam) and contactless took a very long time to be phased in. In addition they had something called chipknip which was for loading small despicable quantities of money onto a card for easy payment, and it was very underutilised. Overall NL will go the same way (except perhaps for the deal cards, and corporate cards, which actually, due to students tending to hop the train rather than move, and commuters often having a company backed season ticket, make up a lot of the passenger numbers). by Jaccident (Thu 18th Mar 2021 12:33pm)

  • Honestly man, if you want to see the change, then little things like tipping up the bin don’t take more than 10 seconds. You can’t need to pave the roads to make a difference. Have you reported the bin to the council even, or are they supposed to know it’s in that state through sheer concentrated power of will? The council have haemorrhaged money in real terms and one of the only things they’ve consistently tried to improve is the community engagement and reporting on their site and app. The tools are there. I say this as someone who regularly moves road furniture that’s blown over/ been bumped, whatever. It’s my city, I don’t expect the council to be omniscient, and it’s a massive waste of time and resources of all parties for me to report things I can fix in 2 seconds; that’s less hassle than dealing with the app honestly. Last summer I spoke to the sweep about moving a bit to outside the local Greggs, it was chucking it down, so we agreed to move it in the dry. Turns out both teams had taken a couple of injuries so had agreed to organise ringers rather than both have to forfeit. I was ours; lightly chubby programmer. Their ringer, I shit you not, **Pierre Van Hooijdonk**. Thankfully the other team had some sense of fairness and put him in goal, but I still played the whole match with my dropped jaw dragging on the astroturf. Chatting to him afterwards he was really nice, super excited to meet a Glaswegian and chat about all the places he liked. • Aye, the junction there gets it bad. It’s the combination of the lack of drainage, and Great George Street being a water flume. Improved drainage is part of the Byres Road Redevelopment plan, but it’s anyone’s guess when this will go ahead now, was due to start in 2019. by Jaccident (Thu 28th Oct 2021 8:13am)
  • Aye. In about 1999 I was standing in that bus stop when the rains really stayed coming down. Before long I was perched on that wee bench that the old bus stops had. Bus driver pulls up, the old 66, I jump from the bench to the bus door, I feel like fucking spider-man. Turn to the guy and my fare drops from my hand and into the drink. Bus driver tells me to get off. I ask if he’d let me stay on until the next stop at least, you know, since I don’t have a kayak on me. He says no. An old woman comes down and pops the 50p for my fare home in the wee slot. I’m so thankful, but she just stands next to the driver, braced against all the handrails, basically ripping the bus driver a new arsehole for being a heartless cunt. She keeps at it from Balgray all the way to the gates of the Botanics. I think it was the first time I ever heard a pensioner swear in earnest. It was utterly amazing. by Jaccident (Fri 29th Oct 2021 11:03am)

If Psychiatry is really your goal then you must understand that conversing isn’t the point of therapeutic counselling. I recommend looking into the UoG COSCA course, it’s a great foundation in talk therapy which helps break bad habits and improve you listening skills to help others rather than serve yourself. by Jaccident (Tue 22nd Mar 2022 10:13pm)

  • Don’t take this as gospel, because it is as 2007 last I did this, but when I took an elective in architectural history, at a Uni without an Architecture degree, I was able to use the Glasgow Uni library for study. I can’t mind what the equivalent to eduroam was back then, but I just put my laptop on their WiFi with that, and worked as normal. I may have shown my matric card but I don’t remember any issues. As someone who more recently did an Inter-university Masters, I was only ever issued one uni’s card and was fine using any and all resources at either. by Jaccident (Fri 30th Sep 2022 8:42am)
  • Hey pal, I checked this for someone recently and can say that you might be better plotting your own route with luggage. My pal got routed through the tube network by the planner tools. The route I would recommend is 1. Gatwick Airport to London St Pancras on ThamesLink 2. 5 minute walk from St Pancras to Euston 3. Euston to Glasgow on Avanti The apps seemingly all try to recommend a route through Victoria (which may seem on paper quicker but will be more expensive and involve the tube). Good luck. by Jaccident (Wed 19th Oct 2022 12:17pm)
  • Hey OP; So first and foremost I think you’ve done the right thing in going to their landlord first. This sounds like a breach of the Housing Act. As she suspects they may be immigrants, there is a knock on could be a breach of their Leave (their visa status). I think that, in your circumstances, if you’re comfortable with it, you ought to speak to them directly. It should set alarm bells ringing for them and correct for the problem. Only then I might raise it to an official. Don’t want to blow up their stay in the country without giving them the chance to correct it. BTW Get the landlord blow-off in writing. They are required to know their tenant’s immigration status AND ensure that their property is occupied in accordance with statute. This is a pretty heinous breach of both. by Jaccident (Tue 25th Oct 2022 12:46pm)

  • They weren’t “robbing bastards”, the economics of running an independent brick and mortar are totally different to chains like Game. In addition to getting shittier deals on distribution, they also held stock of items that GAME never would as it just wouldn’t be profitable enough for them. Game isn’t a specialist retailer, it’s the Tesco of games; where G-Force is more like an independent market. Sure some of the stuff is the same; but good luck sourcing obscure cuts of meat at Tesco. by Jaccident (Mon 12th Dec 2022 10:42am)

  • There isn’t a human driver, so they don’t want a repeat of the DLR disaster. If anything showed up as a problem in testing it can take months to architect, build, certify, and test the solution. They aren’t giving these things a shakedown in Govan, they are doing all the primary testing to make sure a totally bespoke subway solution is safe. by Jaccident (Sat 7th Jan 2023 5:13pm)

  • IANAL but there isn’t a statutory minimum of time that a property must be occupied after a Grounds 4 eviction, in order for it to be “legit”. However, there is a good faith assumption; and if they can’t prove they have acted in good faith then you might have a case at tribunal. In this instance it could be they had intentions to stay in the property long term and something changed, thus they acted in good faith. However, if it was a repeated pattern of behaviour, or it was always obvious they would only be back temporarily (I.e. between already negotiated contracts) then that would be acting in bad faith. Without more information it would be hard to know which for sure. If you would like better advice than I can give, I recommend you speak to Shelter who can help you understand your rights, your landlord’s rights, and what options are available to you. by Jaccident (Fri 3rd Feb 2023 9:30am)

  • So it’s not really until they are coming off Kelvinbridge that the whole thing get’s silly. Bus driver wants to be pavementside going through the Park Road lights so he can stop at the stop just after at Lansdowne Crescent. Rather than slow and merge behind, the bus rather tried to push into that lane without having cleared the cyclist at all. Up until that point was the unfortunate reality of cycling in Glasgow. If you try to cycle “exactly like the code says” some cunt will be trying to kill you, so you cycle by parked cars etc to make life easier for everyone. The bus driver getting aggressive in trying to take that lane is a different and in my mind more worrying transgression. by Jaccident (Mon 15th May 2023 9:10am)
