  • Thank you! by Penny_Century99 (Sat 2nd Feb 2019 2:43pm)
  • ah, I've walked past them a couple of times but forgot about them! Great - thank you. by Penny_Century99 (Sat 2nd Feb 2019 2:50pm)
  • I think some barbers are genuinely confused about why a woman wouldn't just go to a hairdresser, where the other women are. Plus there's the whole masculine barbershop vibe - the banter and all that - and maybe there's a worry I'd ruin it for everyone just by being there. I don't have anything against male-only spaces though. I just want a cheap hair cut. by Penny_Century99 (Sat 2nd Feb 2019 2:50pm)
  • Thank you - Shawlands is my side of the city so I will give them a go. by Penny_Century99 (Sat 2nd Feb 2019 6:52pm)
  • I phoned them up, a young sounding guy answered. I asked whether they cut women's hair and he was polite but just said no, they don't. I clarified that I basically wanted a short back and sides, ie the sort of haircut they do on men all day long, but he just repeated that they don't do it. He was polite but it was awkward! by Penny_Century99 (Sat 2nd Feb 2019 6:50pm)
  • Funny you should mention them - I messaged them yesterday on FB and they couldn't have been nicer. Good prices too - will def be paying them a visit. I've got short hair, I get a skin fade at the sides with a longer top. by Penny_Century99 (Sun 3rd Feb 2019 7:55am)
  • They look great (love the 80s branding, right up my alley) but they seem to have a separate pricing structure for men and women - gonnae message to double check. by Penny_Century99 (Sun 3rd Feb 2019 8:13am)
  • Agree with this, I work in Govanhill (with children) and it is safe there, despite the negative press it gets from the likes of the Evening Times. There are a lot of people living in poverty there, in cramped and unsafe conditions, but in terms of my own personal safety just walking around, I've never felt remotely in danger. by Penny_Century99 (Sun 3rd Feb 2019 8:19am)
  • I'm in! I work in Govanhill and I try to keep the area around our street free of litter, but would be good to join in with something larger scale. by Penny_Century99 (Sun 3rd Feb 2019 8:16am)
  • well, yes... but you must see yourself that they're not exactly busting their asses out there. by Penny_Century99 (Sun 3rd Feb 2019 8:20am)
  • (I do get your point about affording more for your money in Stirling or Falkirk but I don't know how true that is really. We're in a 3 bed semi and it cost under £150,000, which is pretty reasonable by most standards) by Penny_Century99 (Fri 8th Feb 2019 1:49pm)
  • Are you sure you're doing the right thing in moving? My husband and I moved out of the city in 2007 to be nearer his family - our first child was on the way. We've been trying to get back ever since! Moved to the south side in summer last year and so happy we did. Kids love it. I think you might miss it terribly if you leave. by Penny_Century99 (Fri 8th Feb 2019 1:47pm)
  • Yes - does sound like a plan. And once you're both earning you'll have double buying power. by Penny_Century99 (Fri 8th Feb 2019 2:11pm)
  • This news pleases me, despite the fact that I rarely go shopping in actual shops anymore. Fopp was great. by Penny_Century99 (Sat 9th Feb 2019 6:04am)
  • (this would have been in 2003-2005 ish) by Penny_Century99 (Sun 10th Feb 2019 6:18am)
  • A couple of times, a pal took me along to some kind of members-only club that was in an old warehouse or something? You could go if you weren't a member, but you had to get signed in. It was slightly out of town, you had to get a taxi there. Can't for the life of me remember what it was called but it was great - mostly played house and techno as far as I remember and it had an excitingly illegal feel to it - though it wasn't I'm sure. by Penny_Century99 (Sun 10th Feb 2019 6:17am)
  • Always seemed a bleak wee town to me even when the sun is shining. Never been out on the randan there though so can't help you on that score. by Penny_Century99 (Sun 10th Feb 2019 6:32am)
  • You'll be grand! You might possibly be overthinking this. It's Glasgow, not the Sentinel Islands. You'll even find some other Americans who live here, as well as people from loads of other countries from around the world too. It's a great place to live and I'm sure you'll love it, though you might find it a bit colder and wetter than you're used to. Bring layers. :) by Penny_Century99 (Mon 11th Feb 2019 7:27am)
  • I think it might depend where you cycle. My commute is from Cambuslang to Govanhill and includes a few dodgy sections where people drive impatiently and over the speed limit - those are scariest for me, however I tend to ascribe most closs passes to ignorance rather than actively wishing me harm. I feel safer when the traffic is heavier and therefore slower. I think the main problem is people on their phones - I see it more and more, and that worries me. Not just at traffic lights, which is now standard, but people clearly looking at their phones as they drive along. Like you I try to be courteous - I signal, I check behind me a lot, I stop at pedestrian crossings and at other traffic lights, though I might sometimes nip ahead just before the green on busy 4 way junctions, having filtered to the front of the queue first - people probably don't like that, but I feel safer doing it. It's not because I'm trying to win a race. Generally if I've ever had an altercation it's been because some drivers don't like it when I filter through stationary traffic or when I take my lane, which sometimes I judge is safest (passing cars, and staying out of the door zone, etc). Sometimes you need to be in the right hand lane to turn right and a few drivers seem to get annoyed about that, too - though it's not like I'm holding anyone up. I don't think any cyclist enjoys holding back traffic - there's one section of road that I hate for this, it's a steep hill, but there's a roundabout at the bottom of it so I wave through any cars behind before I tackle it... I do usually catch up with them again at the bottleneck at the top though! by Penny_Century99 (Tue 12th Feb 2019 5:12am)
  • You lived in Govanhill for two years and the worst thing that happened was some people stared at you once? I'd call that a win, myself. by Penny_Century99 (Thu 14th Feb 2019 2:35pm)
  • This sort of thing is why I rarely go to gigs any more. Other people ruin everything, and it's got worse since I stopped drinking. by Penny_Century99 (Sun 17th Feb 2019 8:48am)
  • I appreciate that the idea makes you nervous but given your other constraints, it does sound like your best bet - and would broaden your options for where you could live. There are some decent off-road cycle path options from some areas, if it's the traffic you're worried about. by Penny_Century99 (Sun 17th Feb 2019 8:14pm)
  • Good shout- I know that there's no waiting list for some GHA flats (though you would have to forgo the garden idea). Two bedrooms for well under £500 a month, they're a decent, ethical housing association and are doing lots of their older properties up as well as building new ones. by Penny_Century99 (Sun 17th Feb 2019 8:15pm)
  • Persistence is key here. Polite but dogged persistence. Stay neutral and calm, but keep phoning (give up with email - can all too easily slip to the bottom of someone's priority list). Sounds like the head of department is a bit flaky and disorganised - most people can manage to return a phone call or email, even if after a couple of attempts. If you can't speak directly to the head of department ask when would be a better time to call. Leave a message, phone again later that day. Repeat tomorrow, and the next if necessary. See if you can get the number for a direct line at least to his/her PA so you don't have to keep going through reception (couch this in terms of not wanting to take up their time if you need to). See if you can get the email address for their PA, as PAs are more likely to be on top of their inbox, tbh (speaking as an administrator), and if you get them on side, they can hassle the head in person on your behalf. Good luck! by Penny_Century99 (Tue 19th Feb 2019 8:46pm)
  • You know Brexit affects Scotland too, right? We're just as shafted as anyone living in London. by Penny_Century99 (Fri 22nd Feb 2019 9:37am)
  • It was a joke? So - do you or don't you think people are moving here because of Brexit? by Penny_Century99 (Fri 22nd Feb 2019 11:08am)
  • If you've got short hair and money is a factor, you might as well just do it yourself. With short hair it's dead easy, and there are lots of 'how to' guides online to keep you right. Main things are: ensuring you use the right level of developer, and keeping an eye on your hair during the developing process. Also, when you're buying the bleach, also buy a toner to get rid of any yellow/orange colour in the finished result. by Penny_Century99 (Fri 22nd Feb 2019 2:33pm)

  • yes, we did this at school! Felt like some sort of voodoo magic: I was right into it. by Penny_Century99 (Tue 12th Mar 2019 8:06pm)
  • didn't want to read and not reply. I haven't seen a counsellor in Glasgow but I do know that if you can afford to see someone privately, some accredited counsellors charge fees that depend on your income. Hope you get some good recommendations. I think a lot of us feel like we're going through the motions some days. You might feel alone but I guarantee you walk past people on the street every day who are struggling as much as you, in their own way. Personally I've found SSRIs helpful in managing my anxiety - not a cure, but gave me enough of a buffer that I was able to function day to day until I gradually began to feel less crazy. Best of luck to you - hope things start to look brighter soon. by Penny_Century99 (Tue 12th Mar 2019 9:34pm)
  • Sertraline - various dosages over time. It worked well for me (though possibly I was a bit emotionally blunted - I'm a real crier at films etc but I didn't cry for a year!) but experiences vary. It could be that you might benefit from a change in SSRI: people respond differently to different versions. The only issue there would be that you would need to taper off what you're on and taper on to a new one, so it wouldn't be a quick fix. I know what you mean about trying to manage, it is so wearying. x by Penny_Century99 (Wed 13th Mar 2019 8:06am)

  • It'll be the same cunts doing this who moan that "cyclists shouldn't be on the road". by Penny_Century99 (Thu 21st Mar 2019 7:09pm)
  • That bit on Vicky road is nearly unuseable. Hardly anyone seems to bother with it, which is a shame as it must have cost a fair bit. I wonder how many cyclists were consulted before it was built? by Penny_Century99 (Thu 21st Mar 2019 7:10pm)
  • I never quite understand why it surprises people that a murderer would put a grieving family through a trial, or cause problems in other ways, like by refusing to reveal where a body is hidden. The guy is a child rapist and murderer. He's hardly going to start doing the right thing now. by Penny_Century99 (Fri 22nd Mar 2019 3:52pm)

  • I had a lump in my breast which the GP was visibly alarmed by (great!). She made an urgent referral to the breast clinic for mammogram, ultrasound etc. Took two months to get seen - no-one's fault: just not enough specialists to go round. I'm OK thank fuck, but it was a horrible time, during which I learned that there aren't set referral times in Scotland; there are 'targets', but these aren't being met in many health boards. by Penny_Century99 (Sat 3rd Aug 2019 5:39am)
  • No experience, but I did apply in the most recent recruitment round and didn't get past the first stage, which is a bummer because i was already working on my bleep test. Think it's really competitive, some people apply year after year. Best of luck to you! by Penny_Century99 (Wed 14th Aug 2019 2:23pm)

  • I know this is a question that has been thrashed out everywhere across the internet... suffice it to say, I can't agree. by Penny_Century99 (Thu 15th Aug 2019 6:50am)
  • Absolutely! You don't have to make excuses or any other form of conversation - a cheery, resounding "no thank you!" on approach has always served me well. And I am about as socially awkward as its possible to be. I'm not trying to be unsympathetic but I do think a sense of proportion is helpful sometimes. Given the living situation of 99% of the world's population. by Penny_Century99 (Fri 16th Aug 2019 6:16pm)
  • Hope you met some friendly faces! My husband was there with some pals. He went to the bar at one point to get a round in and he couldn't find them after. He ended up giving the rest of his beers to some random strangers and spending the gig with them, he said he had a great time. by Penny_Century99 (Sat 17th Aug 2019 7:03am)
  • I spend an inordinate amount of time thinking about how crossings work. For example, if there's no junction, just a crossing on a straight road, I think there must be a timer that means there can't be two green man within a certain time limit - the busier the road, the longer the limit. Sometimes on newer crossings it looks like there's a smart camera that gauges the traffic before activating the signal. by Penny_Century99 (Sat 17th Aug 2019 7:07am)
  • I'm not saying there should be a longer limit! I'm just saying how I think traffic lights at pedestrian crossings work. I am a pedestrian (and cyclist) myself so I've had plenty of time to notice the difference in waiting times at different crossings. by Penny_Century99 (Sun 18th Aug 2019 11:01am)
  • Blochairn is an experience! I sold a load of stuff there a few years ago - it was HUGE, and indoors too. The only bummer was that it doesn't quite match the OP's description - there's a high proportion of hardened, ruthless car booters, and anything worth buying is haggled over and snapped up the second you've got it out of the car - so my advice would be to go very early if you want a look round. by Penny_Century99 (Wed 28th Aug 2019 6:40am)

  • It's only been a month, you're not necessarily doing anything wrong. How many jobs are you applying for per day/week? by Penny_Century99 (Fri 30th Aug 2019 5:39am)
  • I know it's frustrating when you're applying for lots of posts and not getting anywhere, but try not to let it get to you. My suggestions would be - \- have a couple of different versions of your CV, highlighting particular skills or experience that might be more relevant to different roles \-other sites you could try: goodmoves for voluntary sector admin/customer service roles - they have a lot, and they tend to be decent quality. Mostly you'll be asked to fill in an application form rather than send in your CV - if so, really spend a lot of time on the personal statement section. Also gumtree glasgow jobs seems to have a surprising variety of different roles \- Register for temporary work with smaller recruitment agencies and keep ON THEM, call regularly (be friendly and nice!), so you're not just a name on a database. \- keep a spreadsheet to track your applications, keeping a note of progress and closing dates. Approach it methodically and systematically; this will help you spot any patterns and also make you feel less like you're flinging stuff into the abyss. Good luck. I am sure it'll happen for you soon. by Penny_Century99 (Fri 30th Aug 2019 12:38pm)
  • My mum puts conkers around the house, on windowsills and such, and swears that they repel all spiders. I had never heard of this before and I suspect it's bollocks, but it is conker season, so might be worth a try. by Penny_Century99 (Fri 30th Aug 2019 3:33pm)

  • Innoculated kits are illegal to buy in the UK but there are European sellers such as Zamnesia who are pretty reliable. You can buy non-innoculated kits and spore syringes perfectly legally in the UK though and then you don't have to worry about getting a letter in the post from Customs. Growing your own is a lot of fun, I recommend it. by Penny_Century99 (Sun 29th Sep 2019 2:45pm)
  • It's up to you really - I haven't bought an innoculated kit myself but I know they do ship to the UK and there's reviews from UK customers on their site. • You won't speak to a person at a bar, but you're hoping to arrange a meet-up with randoms off the internet? Genuine question, how is one anxiety-inducing and the other OK? I ask because I'm an introvert (not an aspie though) and either of those options sound awful to me. If I had a free night I'd go to the cinema on my own, or a talk/other event of some kind where there's a focus and I'm not expected to speak to anyone. by Penny_Century99 (Wed 23rd Oct 2019 7:28am)
  • I should say as well - just to talk about me for a minute - I like speaking to people. I like people. But I like there to be a focus, or some way to interact that doesn't put pressure on me to be sociable if I don't feel like it. by Penny_Century99 (Wed 23rd Oct 2019 9:23am)
  • I know what an introvert is - I am one, as I said. My question was, what direction/meaning would you find in meeting strangers on the internet for a drink, but not in going to a pub on your own, with the intention of meeting a stranger for a drink. Both have an end goal (or direction/meaning if you prefer): having an enjoyable social interaction with a new person. So I'm still not clear why the issue with the perfectly reasonable suggestion that was put to you. by Penny_Century99 (Wed 23rd Oct 2019 9:21am)
  • I live just outside Cambuslang. Only 30 minutes out of the city centre on my bike. 10 minutes to Glasgow Central on the train. Loads of green spaces, good local primary schools. £200K will get you a roomy 3 bed or even a 4 bed house and garden. by Penny_Century99 (Fri 25th Oct 2019 7:23pm)
  • Yes, I grew up in a house on a close. Until I moved to Scotland that's what I thought a close was - a dead-end road. by Penny_Century99 (Sun 27th Oct 2019 8:50am)
  • You should get some level of funded childcare from the government (you might already know this if you've moved from within the UK). In Scotland I think it's 15 hours a week or 3 hours a day. If private nurseries are registered they will deduct this off your fee. Council run nurseries tend to provide just the amount of childcare that is funded, so around 3 hours a day. Costs and activities offered will vary from nursery to nursery. You'll have to look around. Important to go visit a few, meet the staff and see the facilities for yourself. Mostly private nurseries offer 8-6 sort of hours, year round (apart from Christmas). Tax credits - You might qualify for some help towards childcare costs, but you'll have to check that with the tax credit website. It depends on your circumstances. There's a calculator on there which will help you work out your entitlement. by Penny_Century99 (Fri 1st Nov 2019 5:32am)
  • I agree with this. I wouldn't be doing sprints on cycle paths or shared use paths, at night or any other time actually. Hitting a pedestrian at 30mph doesn't bear thinking about. by Penny_Century99 (Tue 5th Nov 2019 6:39am)

  • Well - you need to mix those two together in proper quantities to make them explosive. I wouldn't begin to know how to do that - I'd have to look it up (and I imagine that internet activity will probably be logged and tracked somewhere). Fireworks are ready to go out of the box. But I'm sure you know that and are just being wide. by Penny_Century99 (Thu 7th Nov 2019 9:20am)

  • DELETED Google 'scouse brow' - they're not unique to Glasgow. I think the trend was kicked off by reality TV. These days there's more of a move to a look popularised on instagram - 'instagram face' - thick brows, fake eyelashes, heavy contouring. Fake tan is definitely popular here. There's a lot of girls who start wearing it at around secondary school age - the darker the better, it can be an unusual look on naturally celtic skin tones. by Penny_Century99 (Sun 17th Nov 2019 6:52am)

However, here are some cool artists either in Glasgow or not too far away, working in a variety of styles: Ashleigh Bell (Wishaw, trad/neotrad) - [https://www.instagram.com/abell.tattoo/](https://www.instagram.com/abell.tattoo/) Deborah Pow (Glasgow, blackwork traditional)- [https://www.instagram.com/deborahpowtattoos/?hl=en](https://www.instagram.com/deborahpowtattoos/?hl=en) Danielle Rose (Dundee but worth the trip, neotrad) - [https://www.instagram.com/daniellerosetattoo/?hl=en](https://www.instagram.com/daniellerosetattoo/?hl=en) Tubi (Glasgow, FMT, another blackwork traditional) - [https://www.instagram.com/tubiengipsyheart/?hl=en](https://www.instagram.com/tubiengipsyheart/?hl=en) Charissa Gregson (Glasgow, FMT, neotrad) - [https://www.instagram.com/rizza\_boo/?hl=en](https://www.instagram.com/rizza_boo/?hl=en) Billy Hay (Bath St, Glasgow, Japanese) - [https://www.instagram.com/billyhay/?hl=en](https://www.instagram.com/billyhay/?hl=en) Olivia Chell (Edinburgh, Japanese) - [https://www.instagram.com/oliviachelltattoo/?hl=en](https://www.instagram.com/oliviachelltattoo/?hl=en) by Penny_Century99 (Tue 7th Jan 2020 7:09pm)
  • Ah OK! Love your tattoos. I think of the ones I linked to above Ashleigh Bell or Danielle Rose might be your best bet then. They both do super solid bold traditional work. by Penny_Century99 (Tue 7th Jan 2020 7:45pm)

  • I always assumed everyone who did this kind of work has a rhino hide and all insults just bounce off. (not that I'm ever rude, I just say no thanks). Otherwise, why would you? There's other options. I've done some shit jobs in my distant youth but this is something I'd never consider. by Penny_Century99 (Fri 17th Jan 2020 5:57am)

  • Thanks for taking the time to post your experience. I had assumed it would be an unremittingly awful experience so it's good to know there are positives too and that you found aspects of it rewarding. I hadn't considered that more reserved people might get the most out of it, but the way you describe it, I can totally see how that would work. by Penny_Century99 (Sat 18th Jan 2020 7:01am)

  • I need to get out there. I was a commuting cyclist but now working from home so I haven't had a reason to get my bike out the shed for weeks. Since I can barely bother to get dressed most days this maybe isn't surprising, but I'll struggle when things get back to normal - I wonder if my cycle-legs even work now. by Penny_Century99 (Fri 1st May 2020 7:09am)
  • Agreed. On the few stretches of road on my commute that have cycle lanes, I sometimes feel less safe - dunno if I'm imagining it but I feel like drivers can give me less room when there's a lane. And, if I'm not fully in the lane (due to often terrible road surface, or gutter detritus) then drivers can get pissed off. by Penny_Century99 (Fri 1st May 2020 7:05am)

  • I'm English (or at least I sound English), came up to Scotland for uni and have lived here ever since, for over 20 years now. In that time I have had only a couple of experiences of anti-English abuse and mostly they were in the context of drunken arguments with randoms. My accent does get commented on for sure and people definitely do sometimes make assumptions based on it - people are often surprised to find out how long I've lived here, or that I support independence, that sort of thing. But largely feels pretty inoffensive. I'm not dismissing your girlfriend's experiences, by the way - but just offering an alternative viewpoint. If there was a widespread anti-English feeling I would expect to have copped it a lot more by now. by Penny_Century99 (Sun 21st Jun 2020 10:06am)
  • Heated clothes dryers are great, obviously less expensive than a condensing tumble drier, and you can fold them away when not using. We have one with a little tent that fits over it. I put it on overnight, it dries a big load of washing by morning. by Penny_Century99 (Wed 8th Jul 2020 6:35am)

  • I hope you do find a job that allows you to come back. I lived here for a few years in the early 2000s and then for complicated reasons my partner and I had to move away. We finally were able to come back in 2018, this time with our two kids, and managed to buy a house and get settled. Never leaving again. by Penny_Century99 (Thu 23rd Jul 2020 8:07am)
  • Sorry, I didn't mean to imply that we left the country when we left Glasgow. We're UK citizens and we just moved elsewhere in the UK, so when we moved back, other than finding work and a place to live, we had none of the hassles people from overseas would have. by Penny_Century99 (Thu 23rd Jul 2020 10:15am)
  • what a fucking badass! by Penny_Century99 (Sat 25th Jul 2020 10:49am)
  • I'm so sorry this happened. I don't know whether this will help, but as a white woman in my 40s I also have learned to be wary of gangs of teenagers when I'm on my bike. I've had stuff thrown at me a few times on my commute home - from the pavement, as I'm on the road, or people jumping out at me for a laugh. I had an actual branch off a tree thrown at me once - it was only luck I avoided it (and wasn't hit by another vehicle in doing so). I can't say for sure of course that your situation was not a racist incident but I see a few other people here have had similar experiences too. You belong here. They were just a gang of wee dicks. by Penny_Century99 (Sat 1st Aug 2020 10:50pm)

  • I was aff it for over a year but things have started to slide a bit now since COVID. I think it's partly working from home and feeling like I need some way of differentiating work time from down time. I'm going to knock it on the head again though. Socialising is definitely the hardest thing because the pub is the default setting - it's not really the temptation that's the problem, it's more that it's quite boring and irritating if you're not drinking. I think your idea of finding activities to do instead is a good one - or just meeting earlier in the day for lunch or a coffee. by Penny_Century99 (Sun 27th Sep 2020 9:48am)

  • You can grow them yourself quite easily if you use a grow kit. You can legally buy the grow kits and spores separately in the UK - there's actually a supplier that's quite local. Google cylocybe , I have used them a number of times. They have instructions on the site about how to inoculate the kits with the spore syringes. It's pretty much foolproof, even for me, though I actually managed to slightly stab myself with the syringe last time I did it. Innoculated grow kits (that already have the spores in the growing medium) aren't legal in the UK but you can buy from the Netherlands and take the risk of it being seized at Customs and getting a stern letter instead. I have never thought it worth the risk when it's quicker and easier to do that part yourself. I am not confident at identifying liberty caps but if you want to go hunting then this is the season for it, and from what I heard this seems to be a good year (last year wasn't) In terms of the experience itself, there has been some research on psychedelics and addictions, as it sounds like you know, but the dose needs to be big, approaching the fabled 'heroic' dose of Terence McKenna fame. At least 4 grams dried / 40 grams fresh or maybe more depending on your bodyweight. I would recommend having someone you trust to be around. by Penny_Century99 (Fri 6th Nov 2020 5:34am)
  • we had to make a nuclear bunker in our bathroom for our dug - she's a rescue, and timid at the best of times. The bathroom is sort of in the middle of the upstairs of the house so has the best sound insulation. She's got her bed in there and some water. Luckily she was out for a pee just as it was getting dark because it was a long night. by Penny_Century99 (Fri 6th Nov 2020 5:47am)
  • nearly foolproof! There's really good instructions on there, I just followed them to the letter. There were stages I was nervous - like waiting for the very first patches mycelium to grow from the inoculation sites, or waiting for the 'fruiting' stage... basically any time I had to wait for something to start happening! But it was all very straightforward. I've bought kits from them four times now, and had bountiful harvests each time. by Penny_Century99 (Thu 12th Nov 2020 6:24am)

  • Sheese tastes like feet. by Penny_Century99 (Fri 27th Nov 2020 11:44am)
  • You'll definitely hate Violife if you're not even vegan. The only people who think vegan cheese (of the Violife variety) is half decent are people who haven't had dairy products in many years. I'm a vegan of 2 years standing and I'm not there yet. by Penny_Century99 (Fri 27th Nov 2020 11:44am)
  • the only vegan 'cheese' worthy of the name are cultured nut based cheeses that use similar processes to dairy but with nuts as the base rather than milk. Unfortunately they are also more expensive and tend not to melt well. The kinds of 'cheese' you will find in the supermarket (Sheese, Violife etc) are cheese analogues made from varying quantities of potato starch, coconut oil and artificial cheese flavouring which tastes and smells like either feet or vomit, depending on the brand. These kinds of 'cheese' are unacceptable to anyone with even the most distant sense memory of what actual cheese tasted like. by Penny_Century99 (Fri 27th Nov 2020 11:47am)
  • Maybe you're right and I'm being too harsh. I just remember the first time I made pizza after going vegan. I had bought some shredded mozzarella style cheese to go on top, (I think it was Violife or Sheese) and it was so bad that it made my pizza literally inedible. I had to throw it in the bin. I was very sad that day and my early-vegandom was seriously endangered. by Penny_Century99 (Fri 27th Nov 2020 11:58am)
  • If you could easily give up cheese but not milk, maybe you weren't as much as a cheese fiend as I used to be? I'd be the other way around if I couldn't give up dairy. • **milk chocolate**: Rhythm 108 chocolate - delicious, despite weird name. Expensive though and tiny bars. Their coconut one is better than Bounty. Hazlenut praline also a fave Nomo caramel - better than Cadbury's caramel - my daughter loves it and she's not even vegan Vego - nice and chunky (steer clear of the white choc version though) iChoc - any of their 'milk' chocolates are amazing, particularly the cookie and the nut flavours Pico almond milk chocolate - similar to iChoc but also more widely available **ice cream** Swedish Glace: original and best! and so cheap. Old school vanilla. Judes's Salted Caramel: ridiculously nice. They also seem to have a chocolate brownie flavour out now which I haven't tried yet but want to. However STEER CLEAR of their vegan low-cal, it is worse than not having any ice cream at all. Utterly joyless experience Alpro chocolate swirl: tastes like Viennetta (and low cal if you like that sort of thing, not bothered myself) Oatly Chocolate: Yes. by Penny_Century99 (Fri 27th Nov 2020 1:59pm)

  • Can the charity you adopted him from offer any support? Our dog is adopted from overseas and we get lifetime support - not an in-person animal behaviourist but telephone/email contact with people who have lots of experience of issues specific to street dogs. I'm thinking maybe greyhound charities might offer similar. Otherwise look for a behaviourist that does positive reinforcement techniques (rather than any sort of alpha/pack leader nonsense). Good luck - I've a pal that adopted a greyhound a few years ago and they had a rocky start with him but he's come on so much since then - he's a total different dog and a much loved part of the family. by Penny_Century99 (Tue 29th Dec 2020 7:07pm)

I have been following Caroline Girvan's free HIIT workouts on youtube - minimal chat, pretty challenging, don't need much equipment (there's lots of bodyweight only options). Slightly irritating music the only downside but you can always mute it and put your own on. I was running too but I keep borking my stupid knee - however this is keeping me in better shape than when I was running. by Penny_Century99 (Thu 14th Jan 2021 2:33pm)
  • We adopted our dog in January last year through Viktor's Pawprints - they're a small charity which rescues and rehomes street dogs in Romania and Macedonia. They take care to find the right home for each dog and they give lifetime free post-adoption support. They're a good bunch of people and I wouldn't hesitate to recommend them - I know there are some dodgy characters in overseas adoption circles. • I worked in Govanhill for years, for a project that supports children and families. If you don't know the area you maybe don't realise what a close-knit network of programs and organisations support children and families there. Even if the children don't go to school - and many of them don't - they are nearly always known to someone who can raise child protection concerns with police and social work if there are any. Overwhelmingly the main issues we raised were families living in conditions of extreme poverty. I'm not saying there is no child abuse happening in Govanhill. Very sadly it happens everywhere. However if you care that much about this issue, why not do something constructive like supporting and raising awareness about the work of networks that are actually doing something about it, like ECPAT, instead of watching videos of some coked up headcase ranting into his phone? by Penny_Century99 (Wed 20th Jan 2021 7:50pm)

That sometimes happens (speaking as someone who frequently got keys cut for other staff for my old place of work). Have you tried pulling the key out ever so slightly before turning it? Sometimes this can happen with shoddily cut keys. by Penny_Century99 (Fri 26th Mar 2021 1:19pm)
  • could there be another reason for your shin splints apart from the wrong shoes? I struggled with these when I first started running but it was because I increased my mileage too quickly and didn't take enough rest days. • A couple of nights ago my daughter woke up to find a huge spider scuttling across her chest. Understandably she freaked the fuck out, grabbed her duvet, ran downstairs and slept on the sofa. I got up in the morning to find her asleep with the lights on, and I disturbed another massive spider which scuttled out from under the sofa. It was such a unit that I could practically hear its footsteps. So it was either the same one, having hitched a lift downstairs on her duvet, or another one which was waiting for her downstairs. Brrr. I decided not to tell her about it. by Penny_Century99 (Mon 30th Aug 2021 3:13pm)

  • This is the ideal scenario but unfortunately the reality right now in Glasgow is very different. I work in the voluntary sector supporting older people. The waiting list for a community OT assessment for home adaptations and equipment is months long. I support someone who has been waiting 6 months for an assessment for a ramp to be fitted so she can actually get out of her home. HSCP Homecare (who are responsible for personal care) are currently not assessing anyone who isn't requiring end of life care. It's a nightmare situation: no money, no staff. SDS is a great idea in theory but, again, takes a very long time to get anything in place. You need a social worker to do the assessment and getting an allocated social worker right now is next to impossible. Every request that can't be dealt with by a duty social worker is sitting on a very long waiting list. by Penny_Century99 (Tue 12th Oct 2021 7:43pm)

  • We've had ours a couple of weeks and I'm still at the stage where I find emptying it weirdly satisfying - so good to know that water isn't hanging about in the air any more. So great not to have condensation on the windows any more, no more mould worries, and the air feels somehow fresher and cleaner (though I do get a dry mouth now when I'm sleeping) I'm gunning for a max humidity of 55% because I've read that dust mites can't survive at that level and our dog is allergic to dust mites. So we might be able to take her off her very expensive anti-itch tablets, which would be amazing. by Penny_Century99 (Fri 12th Nov 2021 4:26pm)
  • You don't even really need to move it around much if you position it centrally and it's the right size for your home. We've got a 10L one and that does our whole three bedroom flat. The air naturally circulates as areas of higher relative humidity move into areas of lower humidity. But when you first get it, you might want to start it off in the areas with the biggest problem just to give them a head start. by Penny_Century99 (Fri 12th Nov 2021 4:30pm)

I love anything with a bit of scrambling or exposure, but am fairly limited to places I can get to and from in a day. Also limited by quite basic navigational skills so I have to choose my hills carefully. But for multi-day trips, or trickier navigation, or winter walks, I would have been right up for joining a club if I'd found any that I liked the look of. by Penny_Century99 (Wed 1st Dec 2021 7:15pm)

  • That's so hard, I'm really sorry. My dad died on 21st December this year (well, last year now) and it's obviously been a fucking awful time but at least I was able to be with him - he had a cardiac arrest but made it to hospital and was ill for a week before he died. He lived alone and didn't look after himself, so it could very easily have gone the way it did for your dad. I hope you haven't been hard on yourself - you had no way of knowing. Your dad could have phoned his doctor for advice or even an ambulance if he was really worried. His health was not your responsibility. • You'd only pay at the end of the session. You might need to pay a deposit to secure your booking but that would be the only up front payment. (You might know this already, but just in case) Edit to add - I've had sessions which have ended up not taking the full day and the tattooist has charged less than quoted - but it all depends on the tattooist. Some charge by piece rather than by hour - you might want to find someone who does that to take out the element of uncertainty. by Penny_Century99 (Sun 9th Jan 2022 8:32pm)

  • Solidarity. My dad died at Christmas and he rented so I didn't have long to clear his house. He didn't have quite so many books as your dad, maybe 200 or so. I kept some for myself. I picked one up last night and found an inscription in it from me, which gave me a weird feeling! I gave it to him Christmas 2013. I found the bigger charity shops often have a collection service for big uplifts - that's how I got a lot of the furniture moved and they did take a couple of suitcases of books too, as well as a lot of glassware, kitchen stuff (all cleaned up first by me), several bags of clothing etc. Hope you're doing OK. • I'm surprised that as a social worker (presumably GCC?) you aren't aware that for older people, the waiting list for an assessment for SDS/personalisation is months long at least. We have clients that have been waiting over a year and more. Older people's social work in Glasgow is horribly under-resourced. by Penny_Century99 (Wed 9th Mar 2022 5:08pm)
  • Allocated social workers are like gold dust so it is already excellent news that your mum has one. They can probably do the assessment for personalisation themselves - as I said in another post, people can wait ages for an assessment. Once that's done, it's half the battle. Another source of funding and support is your local carer's team, I see someone else has mentioned this. You can self-refer via the form on the GCC website. I hope things start to feel a little easier for you soon. by Penny_Century99 (Wed 9th Mar 2022 5:20pm)

  • There definitely are befriending services. Because of my line of work, all the ones I know of are for people aged 60 and over, but mental health charities (like GAMH already mentioned) do offer them. A lot of the charities I know of are taking a very long time to match people with befrienders because there are so few volunteers at the moment. Which brings me to my next point Would you consider applying to be a befriender yourself? You would get just as much out of it - probably even more I think, it would be structure, social contact, you'd be supported by a co-ordinator, you'd get a huge amount of satisfaction and increased self-esteem. I am someone who struggles with social anxiety too although my situation is different, I also have literally nae mates. And I massively relate to your struggle to connect with your counsellor. My advice there, if you're looking for it, would be to approach a few different counsellors until you find someone you connect with. It will happen I am sure, and most people offer a free, or heavily discounted, first session because it's understood that the therapeutic bond is so important that nothing good (and a lot of bad) can happen without it. Look after yourself. I wish I could give you an awkward hug. x by Penny_Century99 (Sun 10th Apr 2022 7:51am)

  • Maybe it depends where in Glasgow you live. I'm a middle aged woman, not looking for trouble, nor an 'entitled moron' but I've had more than a handful of near misses and other incidents since I started cycling to work 6 years ago. The most recent was last night when a puce-faced driver had a go at me for not giving way to him (he pulled out around a row of parked cars and drove towards me on my side of the road). I don't have any 'horror stories', that said, and I've never been knocked off my bike. The only time I've come off is when I misjudged a patch of black ice on a hill in winter, so entirely my own fault for not getting the bus that day. (Edit - I'd still recommend cycling though! it's cheap and it's never dull. And to the OP, I'd recommend insurance if you're worried about your bike - mine costs me £8 a month, and covers third party damage too) by Penny_Century99 (Fri 24th Jun 2022 5:45am)

  • I'm not 100%, but as far as I know, SWAP courses are usually delivered by colleges, in partnership with certain universities. My husband did a SWAP course when we lived on the East coast for getting into university, but he could only apply to Stirling, Dundee or Edinburgh I think. I can't remember now if there was some sort of guaranteed interview, I think not, but each of the universities had a certain number of places they would allocate to SWAP students. An Access course is usually delivered at the university you're hoping to go to for your undergraduate degree. by Penny_Century99 (Thu 24th Nov 2022 5:44am)

Places with lots of space mean you can keep your distance from other folk and their dogs. Also Cuningar Loop has a whole new bit opened up, lots of new paths. That does get busier on weekends but is usually not too bad on weekday mornings. by Penny_Century99 (Mon 24th Apr 2023 7:09pm)
  • It will absolutely be down to the individual therapist. Different approaches work for different people. Plus it's all about that therapeutic rapport - without that you can't really achieve anything. • I rarely go out for dinner any more. Part of it is, I really like cooking, I spend all day thinking about dinner and I make big multi-dish feasts on the weekends, and I can't remember a meal in the few years that I've had in a café or mid-market restaurant that I couldn't cook better at home. I'm not talking about 'fine dining' but that's like a big birthday experience (someone gave me vouchers for The Kitchin for my 40th and I'll still be thinking about that meal when I'm 80) Saying that, the one reliably good thing about eating out is being able to concentrate on the company and have someone else do all the washing up. That's a treat but I'm not paying £50 upwards for it. by Penny_Century99 (Fri 2nd Jun 2023 6:10am)

  • I agree with the general thrust of your argument, but you might be interested to know that birds don't have vocal cords. They have a unique apparatus called a syrinx. It's lower down than our vocal cords - right at the bit where the two bronchial tubes (one from each lung) come together at the base of the trachea. It allows birds to produce two distinct sounds at the same time as well as a range of complex calls and songs. 5.30 tomorrow morning, instead of feeling grumpy, perhaps the OP can take a moment to wonder at the marvel of evolution. • I am so sorry to read this. A couple of questions come to mind, if that's OK. Have you spoken to your GP about how you are feeling? And you mention you have no-one to talk to. Do you think a mental health support group would be helpful? I'm glad that starting back at the gym did help initially but I know that sometimes being around people in that kind of environment, where everyone else is either focused on their own thing or together in groups, can make you feel even more alone. Do you live anywhere you can get out for walks? Loneliness is the most brutal feeling. I hope it has helped a little even to open up here. x by Penny_Century99 (Sun 18th Jun 2023 2:27pm)
  • Have a look at [https://www.menmatterscotland.org/services](https://www.menmatterscotland.org/services) \- they might be able to link you up with some one to one support, which might be more your kind of thing? As well as support groups and other activities. It's good to hear you're going to speak to your GP. I have done this twice in the past when I have been feeling similar to you, and both times I absolutely dreaded the appointment but I felt so much lighter even saying how I was feeling out loud. So many people are struggling with depression and isolation at the moment - you are not alone in this, I think you would be very surprised by how many people would recognise that strange feeling you describe in your first post. Take care x by Penny_Century99 (Sun 18th Jun 2023 3:02pm)

  • Usually the first session with a counsellor is where you agree how you'll work together. The counsellor will, or should, tell you about themselves - their background and approach; whether the sessions are open ended or limited to a certain number, and will also go through confidentiality (as others have mentioned) as well as any other ground rules for your sessions. You'll probably be asked what you hope counselling will help you with - are there any issues you'd particularly like to focus on. It's to set the scene basically, the start of your working relationship together. by Penny_Century99 (Tue 27th Jun 2023 7:13pm)
  • that absolutely is a real answer. Remember this is not a test! The counsellor will understand that you're likely to have some anxieties about therapy itself, and certainly about the first session. by Penny_Century99 (Wed 28th Jun 2023 5:06am)

  • I have zero banter this morning, but I have had this one for about three or four years now, and before that I had another salter scale. [https://www.argos.co.uk/product/8494797?clickSR=slp:term:salter%20digital%20kitchen%20scale:2:23:1](https://www.argos.co.uk/product/8494797?clickSR=slp:term:salter%20digital%20kitchen%20scale:2:23:1) Works fine, reasonably cheap, very reliable, the only annoying thing is that it offers you a 'liquid measuring function' which is obvious bollocks as it's the same reading in ml as in grams. It might work for water but 25ml of, eg, olive oil does not weigh 25g. So I still use my measuring cups for liquids. But, otherwise it's good. Simple to use, easy to keep clean, ideal if you like baking which needs precision. by Penny_Century99 (Thu 3rd Aug 2023 5:35am)

Some drivers pay emissions tax, but lots of newer cars have low or zero emissions so their drivers don't pay it either, and it doesn't all pay for the roads. It goes to central government, along with income tax, and some of all of that pays for the roads, along with council tax. There's some decent cycling infrastructure now but it covers a tiny fraction of the city and I'd quite like to make it to my old age without sustaining life-changing injuries. Plus, as you've discovered, if you challenge anyone on their driving, they tend not to be receptive. One thing I would add is to stay out of the door zone if you can.
