  • No, I mean paying them less than you could afford, expecting free overtime (even if its 15 minutes per day, it really adds up), not providing rest areas or PPE and so on. Split weekends are another tool of undermining morale and mental health. I probably shouldn't have gone to answer your question but maybe you genuinely dont understand the difference between a good and a bad employer by fluentindothraki (Sat 26th Sep 2020 11:27am)
  • If you speak any additional language fluently, it's worth searching for language jobs. At least pre covid there were always jobs going at ptw, honeywell, etc. by fluentindothraki (Tue 29th Sep 2020 10:49pm)
  • Make sure you list your languages on your CV and make it searchable. A good key word search engine for jobs is Adzuna, covers most of the other job sites. S1 jobs is good for local stuff. Poundstretcher, B&M, Homebargains etc dont post jobs online, best walk in with a printed CV. God luck! • Not my department. We have a pretty strict regime of who does what. That's not the worst I have seen it, but not the best either. We had a lot of rats during the reign of our last manager... by fluentindothraki (Tue 27th Oct 2020 9:43pm)
  • Just a random guess...but there was a lot of industry on the south side, so workers would move there from various other parts of the country so the population was less homogenous than north of the Clyde? - There are so many different churches because there are so many different flavours of christianity about. by fluentindothraki (Sat 7th Nov 2020 3:59pm)

  • My pet rage are not so much the non-mask wearers (because for my own sanity I assume they have valid reasons) as the nose-exposers, or the ones who wear the mask round their neck or in their hair... the ones who come into a shop with a coffee/milk shake from another shop and slurp and sip mask-less while doing their shopping. The ones who still think shopping is a social activity and come in groups of 4 or more, each buying 1 can and 1 packet of crisps - because sending in 1 person to get that would be too considerate (not to mention that you could just buy that a for a few days in advance). And all the people who drop their masks and gloves who don't pick them up. by fluentindothraki (Tue 17th Nov 2020 10:05pm)

  • I doubt that much can be done in the near future, Covid is seeing to that. A lot of people have become poorer, and more stressed so there will be so much to do to recover. I would also suggest moving, and most of the Southside seems to have come up (the bits that I know). Govanhill probably isn't the best for a female living by themselves but most other areas should do. by fluentindothraki (Sat 21st Nov 2020 11:58pm)

  • I live in Glasgow and have family who lived in Paris so I know both a bit. Glasgow is cheap and compact, and very laid back. Finding pals is easy and while you get proper city life with art and food and markets and cafes etc (probably not as good as Paris, in particular foodwise even though it's not bad here) you are also close to some amazing scenery, beaches, hills, castles, and a lot of mind clearing refreshing emptiness. You can have short trips to islands and proper mountains. So if you are really into city life, Paris is great, but if you like nature, Glasgow is a thousand times better. by fluentindothraki (Mon 4th Jan 2021 8:40am)

  • Drove from Glasgow to Paisley at half 7 this morning. There's 2 lanes and each has someone crawling at under 20 mph....not letting me overtake (I lived half my adult life in a heavy snow country and have a car / tyres that are quite happy with this weather). I salute everyone being careful and not driving faster than they are comfortable with but why do it in the overtaking lane? by fluentindothraki (Thu 14th Jan 2021 8:21pm)

  • Big enough to have exciting culture / venues / museums / institutions. Small enough to get around by bicycle. Public transport isn't great.ost areas are safe enough for a young single female, I would recommend to live in a flatshare at first before you rent alone (flatshares are great anyway). I am a southsider and live how international the place is. On top of all of that there are beaches and hills pretty close, and amazing landscapes worthy of longer trips. Making friends is fairly easy. by fluentindothraki (Thu 21st Jan 2021 9:54pm)

  • I like snow. I like the sound and the feel and the smell and how it looks and I enjoy pictures of snowy Glasgow by fluentindothraki (Mon 8th Feb 2021 10:24pm)
  • Southsider here, they stopped collecting the grey bin collection nearly a year ago because of Covid. No communication when the service will be resumed. We requested additional blue bins, had 2 (for 8 flats) now have 5. We still occasionally fill all 5, but that's because we all get stuff delivered which means more packaging than buying from a shop. by fluentindothraki (Sun 21st Feb 2021 9:03pm)

  • My SO caught Covid just by walking our dog (mostly in Queenspark), without ever shaking hands with anyone. Then gave it to me and a couple of elderly relations who were extremely poorly. The new strain seems to do well outdoors... better to be too careful until more people have had the jab by fluentindothraki (Fri 26th Feb 2021 4:48pm)
  • Also, it depends where you are from. I am a foreigner too, and rented until a few years ago. I came across a few landlords who said they preferred renters from EU countries, even over natives sometimes by fluentindothraki (Fri 26th Feb 2021 4:53pm)
  • Maybe we are just lucky but our neighbours are great. Friendly without being nosy, considerate, helpful. Not saying that all of Shawlands is like that, and as house prices go up, we get an influx of people who seem a little less likeable...they mostly drive BMWs. by fluentindothraki (Mon 1st Mar 2021 1:18am)

  • There was a time when nowhere in Glasgow was allowed to serve alcohol on a Sunday, apart from the steam boats going up and down the Clyde. That's where the expression 'steaming' for getting/being drunk comes from. (Story told by old man in a pub in Partick so must be 100 % true) by fluentindothraki (Fri 19th Mar 2021 9:36pm)
  • There are loads of beautiful places to go, lots of them hard to get to on public transport by fluentindothraki (Sat 20th Mar 2021 9:39pm)
  • I travel to work by car between Glasgow and Paisley, but sometimes have to take the train. Early morning train was pretty much empty, only other passengers wearing manual-labour clothes, like me. Train mid afternoon back into town: packed, and half of the fannies dressed for a night on the tiles, best joggies and arse-revealing dresses. by fluentindothraki (Sat 20th Mar 2021 9:36pm)
  • A good one is train to Irvine, walk to Troon, snack at the wee hurrie, train back. Or bus to Lennoxtown (after lockdown of course). by fluentindothraki (Sat 20th Mar 2021 10:54pm)
  • Saw a cyclist with a can of tennents is his hand, drinking on a busy road. my first thought wasn't about the drinking, it was that he would chuck the can instead of binning it by fluentindothraki (Sat 3rd Apr 2021 8:20pm)
  • If you have to use public transport: bus to Lennoxtown / Campsies, and another good one is train to Irvine, walk to Troon or Barassie, train back from there. by fluentindothraki (Mon 12th Apr 2021 7:49pm)
  • I lived in Denistoun, Bridgeton, Shawlands, Finnistoun, Partick over the years. Always felt quite comfortable. There are a couple of areas where friends of mine stayed where I didn't feel safe: Govan, Govanhill, Robroyston, Easterhouse, Possil. by fluentindothraki (Mon 19th Apr 2021 3:22pm)

  • It's a bit of a culture shock if you come from somewhere less chatty. Most of it is friendly / neutral. I am a foreigner, had lived in London for a few years before moving to Glasgow. I remember walking home with a shit ton of groceries and an elderly man saying Aw those messages and heehaw for me? I was unfamiliar with Messages for shopping and had never heard heehaw before... by fluentindothraki (Mon 3rd May 2021 5:56pm)

  • Cut&Curl at Whitehill Street in Denistoun is my favourite. They don't do appointments, it's walk in only, prices are extremely low (£40 for highlights colour cut blow-dry), I always bring my own colour. It's a 1 woman outfit, Linda has been a hairdresser for 30 years and is unflappable. I have wavey hair and have always been happy there, for 10 years or so. Lots of other hair dressers found my hair difficult because it's slippery and there is an awful lot of it. by fluentindothraki (Wed 26th May 2021 1:55pm)
  • I agree that too many people have dogs who don't know how to train them at all. I would be in favour of making dog school mandatory. But for each dog owner who is too lenient with their dog there is one who is overly anxious and unrealistic about dog behaviour (not having a go at OP, I can understand their point). I would also love to see more dog parks / dog fields. There are empty spaces on building sites or underused areas in parks. Nearly all dogs need off lead play times and it everyone can drive to placing fields outside town. by fluentindothraki (Sat 29th May 2021 8:30pm)

  • Skirving street has Zola, Hug and Bean (none of them are earth shattering amazing but all very pleasant, plus 2 take dugs). Far out of Glasgow but definitely earth shatteringly good: Alexander Taylor in Strathhaven. Glad cafe is great for events and has interesting food. Dandelion cafe in newlamds park is hilarious for people watching. Dnisi has very good coffee and cakes as well. Strange Brew off Kilmarnock Road. Tapas is lovely too (I usually go to the one in Denniston because my hairdresser is there but I am sure the southside one is good too). Southside roasters is said to be good but I haven't been yet. by fluentindothraki (Thu 24th Jun 2021 9:25am)

  • If you have transport there is often more on the outskirts. I had alerts for EK, Polmadie, Motherwell (that one included transport). Also, drop CVs off at the likes of B&M, Homebargains, Poundstretcher etc, they don't like paying agencies so there's a good chance to get a job, but usually they require a lot of flexibility. by fluentindothraki (Fri 10th Sep 2021 11:10pm)
  • My go to when I didn't have a car was to take a train to Irvine, walk to Troon , go to the Wee Hurry chippy or one of the cafes, or ice cream or ALL of them, take the train back from Troon. It is about 7 miles but walking on sand is nice and soft. by fluentindothraki (Sat 11th Sep 2021 10:36pm)

  • You may not be aware on just how much that doesn't apply to the SNP? Who are extremely welcoming to incomers from anywhere? And there is a huge difference between power for the sake of it / self glorification and personal gain, and the political will to provide a better framework for the people? by fluentindothraki (Fri 29th Oct 2021 5:30pm)
  • Glasgow isn't all poverty and deprivation, there are plenty of people who are lucky enough to earn reasonably well and can afford a nice life - and that lifestyle comes cheaper in Glasgow than in many other comparable cities. I don't think there is a call to be rude to OP for appreciating that. And before you all rain hate on me: I have worked in minimum wage jobs for years, so I know how shite that is, but that doesn't mean I begrudge anyone a nice flat or being able to have a hipster coffee every day of the week if that's what makes them happy. by fluentindothraki (Fri 29th Oct 2021 5:42pm)

  • The wait for the autism assessment was over a year (2015/16) and they were useless twats who are so amazingly professional that they don't know that women / girls display different symptoms. The ADHD assessment: was referred by my GP in 2017, waited just under 3 months, had a visit a few times, but it was very uncomplicated. I can't remember all details but there were questionnaires, and they asked me to talk to family members about my childhood / teenage behaviour (I was already in my forties so a bit weird). by fluentindothraki (Tue 2nd Nov 2021 10:31pm)

  • The wall beds I have seen irl were low on the ground, and that makes it harder to get up, in particular if you are heavy. Good point to remember by fluentindothraki (Sun 7th Nov 2021 12:33pm)
  • Damasquino on Saltmarket is dirt cheap, the food is fantastic, atmosphere isn't their strongest point. It might help if you said where you stay / work / study etc because there are plenty of good restaurants tucked away in random places by fluentindothraki (Mon 8th Nov 2021 5:36am)

  • Libraries are good, and there are 3 Cafes in a row on Skirving Street (Zola, hug, bean scene) where my SO goes to work for an hour or so at a time - usually Hug because then he can take the dog. The Mediterranean is nice too, and D'nisi (both Kilmarnock Road). Since all of these are a bit small and I feel guilty about keeping consumption levels low, I go to pubs, they tend to be emptier during the day, and having a pint often helps to concentrate. by fluentindothraki (Fri 26th Nov 2021 1:20am)

  • Got this from someone who works at the Covid Test Centre at the QEUH. They get the tests from all over Scotland and northern England, they try to get everything that comes in into the lab within an hour. They work 24 7 when it's busy. The actual lab process takes up to 8 hours I think, and obviously every test has to be unpacked, scanned, logged. by fluentindothraki (Sun 19th Dec 2021 7:34am)

  • I am hugely frustrated with the bunch in Aukdhouse / Shawlands. I drive an old Saab and they keep insisting they need to import the original parts new from Sweden. Apart from the fact that some of the parts are essentially Vectra parts (so bullshit), no sane person would shell out brand new parts for £700 a pop when you can get them second hand on eBay for £120. by fluentindothraki (Thu 6th Jan 2022 6:14pm)

  • Presumably the person who lived there had mental health issues and was incapable of looking after themselves and the house. They would either have died or taken to hospital. If you were to inherit the house and felt energetic, you could probably get a massive loan to have it fixed but that takes time, and you would need to find the tradesmen and materials and probably put in a lot of your own time as well. It would be worth it as it is a lovely area afaik by fluentindothraki (Sat 8th Jan 2022 7:52am)

  • Even the Giffnockers (Giffnockians?) rarely did a full shop there. They had some beautiful stuff there, amazing bread, chacuterie, really interesting wines and beers, quiches and cakes. As far as I could tell, most people did their main shop elsewhere and topped it up with the stuff you couldn't get anywhere else. Waitrose in Mearns hadn't opened yet so when Wholefoods announced that they were closing we had kind of hoped for a Waitrose... Then Lidl Sait they will take over. Would it maybe leave you time / energy for a side project that could generate income? Are you realistically going to stay there for more than 2 or 3 years? Or will you start looking around anyway after a while? • We had the same situation, my SO convinced the other owners (8 flats, 2 agency let's, 6 owner/occupier) to get a factor, get repairs done, apply for grants. He had the lights on the stairs fixed out of his own pocket and we regularly cleaned the stairs and garden until a factor was appointed. Convincing owners that this protects / increases the value of the property was easy enough, and nearly all of them could afford the outlay (one of them is struggling so we ask only for minimal contribution from him) by fluentindothraki (Fri 25th Mar 2022 8:32am)

  • Asked young woman to move bag, she pretended she didn't hear me (headphones). Put bag on floor, sat down. I have a coat with a broken zip too and I have been too lazy to have it fixed for a whole year, so I have been paying attention to the number of shops that could do it that I walk past every week. There's at least 3 around shawlands / battlefieds on the southside! by fluentindothraki (Fri 1st Apr 2022 1:40pm)
  • Not sure how relevant that is for you, but one of the many reasons why I love Glasgow is that there is so much beautiful countryside fairly close by (beaches, hills, lochs) but for that you kind of need a car. At that pay I would just buy an old banger for a few hundred £ that might only last a year or less. As for where you want to live: depends on where your work is, there are nice pockets in some doggy areas which would be worth it if you can walk to work. • What would help is having more dedicated dog zones (I don't mind paying for something like that!). I know there are plenty of dog fields outside Glasgow but you need a car to get there. I can understand how annoying it is for cyclists and pedestrians and owners of nervous dogs but life on the lead is not a healthy option for most dogs. I see too many Covid pups with inexperienced, insecure owners who never get to play off lead which means they get frustrated and might turn difficult. There are so many more dogs now than a couple of years ago so it's more and more of an issue, same as owners not picking up after their dogs... by fluentindothraki (Tue 21st Jun 2022 2:45pm)

  • I used to live near Duke Street 15 years ago or so and it certainly has gentrified considerably but there are still a few middle eastern and African shops there and loads of excellent charity shops. • Not been for a while but Baked on Duke Street were my favourite by fluentindothraki (Thu 11th Aug 2022 9:19pm)
  • I take it you will be moving for work? I sincerely hope you will enjoy life here. Scotland is incredibly beautiful - beaches and hills and castles buffet! Glasgow is friendly and there are plenty of museums (a lot of them free) and concerts and exhibitions and theatre and life music, so no excuse to ever get bored. As a fellow immigrant one wee word of warning: fruit and veg will probably come as a shock to you, what the normal super markets offer is pretty limited, mostly imported and grown for longevity rather than taste. But there are loads of little shops that have better stuff. The weather is actually nicer than it sounds: the rain is very often a fine drizzle that's halfway between fog and rain, and it doesn't get really cold (hardly below 0) or really hot (mostly below 30°). You will get used to it in a year or so, as long as you buy good quality waterproof clothing. by fluentindothraki (Thu 25th Aug 2022 8:52pm)
  • On another note: life in Glasgow is pretty informal, you could turn up for a concert or the opera in casual clothes and no-one would be upset like it is on some other countries. The same applies for a lot of work places but obviously not everywhere. It's also a very tolerant place so if you wanted to bring your gallibaya people won't be bothered either. by fluentindothraki (Sun 28th Aug 2022 3:12pm)

  • I liked lockdown (happy relationship, nice neighborhood, part time job in a shop so still getting out of the house, dog for walks so it was no great hardship). I liked how quiet and clean everything was. I let a lot of vague / shallow friendships fade out - all the ones who constantly moaned about not being able to go out, or about masks etc. What I took away for myself is that I, like plenty of other people benefitted from a quiet world. But on the other hand some of my closest friends have sort of list their motivation, their drive, their positivity. Not sure it is long covid or psychological damage. It does feel as if people are holding back less with their opinions than before, like those weeks of minimal social interaction took away a layer of tact and tolerance maybe? by fluentindothraki (Sat 15th Oct 2022 8:00pm)
  • I am sorry you had such a hard time, didn't mean to sound judgemental. I was just irked by a group of people who go out and get drunk every weekend and always complain about being broke and hungover. by fluentindothraki (Sat 15th Oct 2022 10:47pm)

  • There are specific sprays / powders / Geld that should keep all animals away. They obviously cost money but you could always try a cheaper DIY version:  mix two tablespoons of distilled white vinegar and 10 drops of any citrus scented essential oil and 10 drops teatree oil into one and a half cups of cold water, fill into empty spray bottle, apply generously along the outside and in all the hotspots by fluentindothraki (Mon 24th Oct 2022 8:18pm)
  • I wouldn't miss them if they were made illegal but I know some people think they are really pretty. So I guess there are ways it could be managed without upsetting too many people: License certain places where letting them off is legal and make the use of these places really expensive and make it a requirement that that people have to book certain slots. That way the people who like them get to see a display, the people who like to let them off get a playground, and the rest of us can avoid them. • Just as anectotal: our dog isn't bothered, my other half hates fireworks. Our neighbours kids love fireworks and their cat and dog are suffering horribly. So that one doesn't fly. • We booked a taxi to Edinburgh airport at 3 a.m. for a 6 a.m. flight through booking com , the company that drove us was Saltire private hire. Driver turned up early, was the nicest guy in the world, and drove like it was a flying carpet: incredibly smooth. Cost £100 from the southside but it was worth it for the peace of mind. During the day, the buses are good too, but we would have needed a taxi to the bus station. by fluentindothraki (Mon 21st Nov 2022 5:44pm)

I found that as long as I go for a walk every day (I have a dog) and make sure that I get out of Glasgow on the weekends for a bit, the darkness doesn't get at ne at all One of the best things about Glasgow is that you can easily get to the hills or the beach for a change of scenery. by fluentindothraki (Mon 12th Dec 2022 10:47am)

  • We are in a tenement, all our neighbours are lovely, considerate, helpful, pleasant, and pretty bright, I think I am the only one without a degree...and they are still too fucking stupid to understand what goes in a blue bin. It says so on the garden door, bit says so on the bins, we had leaflets.. and every time I want to put my recycling away there are half full milk bottles, greasy pizza boxes, glass bottles, shopping bags... I occasionally put something in the group chat but it seems to make no difference by fluentindothraki (Sun 18th Dec 2022 8:04am)

  • I moved to Glasgow 20 years ago and live here permanently but still see it a bit from the outside. Some areas get better and better (I live in Shawlands) and the city centre has never recovered from the Covid lockdowns and the WFH that's still going on. But I feel the UK generally feels poorer than the European countries I regularly visit. At first it was a carefree relaxed shabbiness that o liked about Glasgow, just because people are less materialistic than in most other places but now it feels left behind (I think it's the UK as a whole but Glasgow maybe more because it always felt more European, less British than the rest of GB ) by fluentindothraki (Wed 15th Feb 2023 11:28am)
  • I mean this in a good way, it always felt open and multicultural in a European as much as in a commonwealth way. Whenever I was out in town there were lots of different languages, every party I went to had people from different countries, everybody knows a few random words in other languages and gas friends or extended family abroad or from abroad. by fluentindothraki (Wed 15th Feb 2023 3:32pm)

  • As a fellow foreigner (but in Glasgow for 20 years) I think the biggest difference to other countries is that you feel treated like a human being first and a woman second. It's perfectly possible for a girl to pay a stranger a compliment or crack a stupid joke without people automatically assuming you hit on them so it's possible to start an innocuous conversation and just blether away. The more difficult bit is that if you are interested in someone, it might be necessary to hand them your phone number with the words: just in case you were too shy to ask. I quite liked online dating but I got a spouse out of it years ago (and found a lot of nice restaurants etc). Go to museums and exhibitions and gigs and concerts and just chat to people who enjoy the same things as you. I hope you meet someone amazing, or even several. by fluentindothraki (Thu 16th Feb 2023 10:29pm)
  • I specifically wrote it FEELS more European, that's not the same as there being that many. Diverse includes people from all over the world, I meant specifically European. My experience in London was that because there were so many, people often hung out with their co-nationals a lot and didn't mix as much. by fluentindothraki (Fri 17th Feb 2023 11:08am)

  • Just to be the devil's advocate: if she pays for a cleaner, the online groceries and a bigger chunk of the mortgage then you are in a gender reversed bog standard relationship for that kind of job. Not condoning it at all, it takes a massive toll on the person who has that kind of lifestyle. You have been together 7 years, would you say she is still the person you fell on love with? The person you want to live with? If you want to save the relationship I would a. Take her away for a few days and do something like camping where she is far from temptation and see how she is coping with this - and explain to her how you feel. I would also make it clear that the life style is unsustainable for you, and if its part of her job then it's time to find another job. And then, if you can, move out on the days that she is around and stay with friends / family just to make it clear that you mean it. I hope it works out for you, whichever way. by fluentindothraki (Thu 23rd Mar 2023 5:20am)

  • Was walking past there yesterday and thought I should give it a try... Now I won't. The whole concept of service charge is wrong, the prices should cover all outgoings and the tips should be for the staff (front & back of house) who do a hard job by fluentindothraki (Sat 25th Mar 2023 8:40am)
  • An Amanda rescue by any chance? by fluentindothraki (Sun 26th Mar 2023 4:34pm)
  • Cant really help you on the job front but as for buying a house: for 50 K it's not going to be great. I would strongly recommend waiting until you finished your degree and are settled into a role and decide then. For the price you mentioned you either get somewhere in a neighborhood that will have you on the phone to the polis and/or the suicide helpline twice a day, or somewhere that needs tons of work done, and you sound like you don't need either. Also bear in mind that the trains are neither cheap, frequent or reliable by fluentindothraki (Sun 26th Mar 2023 4:31pm)
  • In general I think dogs understand No and Don't. But once the hunting instinct kicks in, they are oblivious to anything other than their prey (not all dogs but a lot anyway). I agree that the owner should have known better. Pollok is also full of deer so there's a lot of temptation. by fluentindothraki (Sun 26th Mar 2023 4:37pm)
  • I would focus on the job search then rent somewhere convenient, start saving and exploring. Owning your house is only cheaper than renting if you have a fat deposit and low maintenance costs. While you are renting, you don't need to worry about the cost of a new boiler or the scaffolding for the roof repair etc. by fluentindothraki (Sun 26th Mar 2023 4:59pm)
  • DELETED I thought it says 2 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms, 112m2? Don't get me wrong, the price is ridiculous and I seriously doubt anyone will pa that in full but it's not that small by fluentindothraki (Sun 26th Mar 2023 5:03pm)

Or ask someone to take a picture of the guy (or do that yourself if you think it's safe). Not sure if the police would do anything. • If you are nervous then the easiest is to take a train that stops in Barassie (not all of them do, and the ScotRail app is really reliable and easy to use). The train station is right by the beach so if you come from Glasgow you go over the railway bridge and come out in a street called Hillhouse Gardens. You follow that until you see the sea, it's only a couple of minutes. A few hundred meters on your left is Troon which is a cute little town with a few nice cafes and a really famous chippy by the harbour where you can usually see seals, if you are interested I can tell you more. On your right is the beach that goes for miles, all the way to Irvine if you want to walk that far. Sometimes there are s few streams (but you can walk around them without getting your feet wet but I think taking off your shoes and going barefoot is best) but otherwise it's just sand. You can see that if you change your Google maps to terrain. You can either turn around and go back to Barassie or walk all the way to Irvine. You can't miss the train station there because there is a river that means you have to turn right and follow that road until you see the train station to your right, opposite a big ASDA. There are a few really nice cafes and restaurants along that river, Gro is fabulous Hope that gives you a better picture, happy to give more details if you like. Hope you have an amazing time. by fluentindothraki (Thu 18th May 2023 11:59am)

  • If she lives in a city I would say day trip to Dunoon, lovely cafes , all the charity shops you can eat, beautiful gentle walks, and the ferry itself is a pleasure. If she lives somewhere smaller than Buchanan galleries? Not too hot inside , and plenty of good restaurants cafes pubs nearby. Routen Glen is another good one, take the bus to the boat house, have coffee, meander down to the walked garden and the water fall etc, end up in the garden centre which is really one of the better ones (or at least it used to, the owners are getting really old now) by fluentindothraki (Sat 3rd Jun 2023 10:45am)
  • It depends on where you are from and what you are used to (we were swimming in the sea last night but there were tourists in warm jackets and long trousers). There is pretty much always a breeze and it's more humid than the centre of a continent would be. Just bring waterproofs and insect repellent. by fluentindothraki (Sun 4th Jun 2023 8:15am)

  • Trained gardener here. When we moved into our current flat, the garden was distinctly unloved but not a total jungle. Sane situation ad you, shared garden for 8 flats, 6 owner occupied, 2 rented out, nobody objected to us hacking away. Have you got decent tools? There are essentially 2 schools of approaching such a gargantuan task: do one job at a time, or do one area at a time. I would start with an area near the door so you have a cheerful result fairly soon to keep you motivated. You might not get a huge amount of new plants in as it's nearly solstice, but whe you start planting, bear in mind that the soil is rubbish: ericaceous, depleted, compacted. Easier to start with pots (azaleas / rhododendron grow well though, and possibly heather, ferns if it's shady (and you have time to water). Feel free to contact me for specifics! by fluentindothraki (Mon 5th Jun 2023 11:23am)
  • Solstice is the longest day, so the 6 weeks before and after provide the most light. Light , water and warmth are what drives growth and no amount of fertiliser can compensate for lack of those. Solstice is not just for blood sacrifice, drinking mead and setting things on fire, it has an actual meaning in gardening! It's Work out which spots get the most sun, the least wind, those are best for growing from seed but that might be a bit ambitious. Start with a few pots of strawberries or uncomplicated flowers. Roses are easy for example. Without wanting to sound like a total creep, and if coming to the southside isn't a massive chore, you are herewith cordially invited to visit our garden. by fluentindothraki (Mon 5th Jun 2023 6:06pm)

We go to Pets at Home in Auldhouse, mostly I just walk her around there, let her stare at the rabbits for a bit, then by her a treat, but every 6 months or do we go to the groomers there and I stead of her having to stand on a table, one of the lovely girls comes over, kneels down and cuts her nails - over and done with in 20 seconds. by fluentindothraki (Tue 13th Jun 2023 1:02pm)

  • Been here nearly 20 years and still think it's great. I do see the downsides (litter, public transport is really expensive and uncoordinated, could do with more cycle lanes, etc) but I love the buzz, the wee independent coffee shops, the creativity, the friendliness, the fact that there are so many dogs and most of them are happy, approachable and happy to be clapped by strangers. by fluentindothraki (Sun 25th Jun 2023 5:35pm)
  • Call centres are mostly soul destroying and depressing, so I would do anything else first. Take a look at the job ads and see what employers are looking for and see if any of those sound good. Tenping is a good idea, and also warehouse work: saves you going to the gym and leaves your brain free to roam. Check if there are any trades that you fancy, vocational training can be done at any age and college is usually 3 days per week so plenty of time to work part time (plus you might get a bursary). Or if you fancy getting back into legal work, volunteering a bit at the Citizens Advice might smooth things out by fluentindothraki (Tue 27th Jun 2023 9:07am)

  • As a well travelled woman I can assure you that you will get hit upon far less than in most other countries - but if you look friendly and approachable you will have loads of fun conversations with strangers. However, should you find that you would like to get to know someone better, it's probably a good idea to ask him for his number. If you really want to hire a driver, just work out where you want to go and ask for offers, some of the smaller companies might be happy to do that. I always recommend Saltire Transfers for any pre-booked taxi rides but I have no idea if they do that kind of thing. by fluentindothraki (Tue 4th Jul 2023 7:12am)

  • We rented a 5 bedroom house in Milngavie which a large reception room and garden (family members from abroad needed accommodation) and asked a friend of ours to set up a buffet. We had the party and the ceremony there. We were lucky to get flowers for free (I had forgotten about that, and one of our guests collected leftover flower arrangements from another wedding!) We had 35 people and 3 dogs at the wedding, and several people told us that they thought it was one of the best if not the best wedding they had ever been to. We also provided inspiration for another wedding (they got married at the West Brewery). Happy to provide details if you like. Getting married doesn't have to cost a lot of money. One last pro tip: hire a nanny for the day (or get your friends to do that as a wedding gift) . Makes the day much better for everyone involved. • Seconded. by fluentindothraki (Tue 11th Jul 2023 7:12am)
  • When we had to catch an early flight, we treated ourselves to a ride. We originally used booking.com for the flight so we booked the taxi through them but the experience was so positive that we now always use that private hire company (Saltire Transfers) when we need to get to an airport / train station etc. You need to pre-book and prepay. They were always not just on time but actually early, helpful with luggage, friendly, reliable and nice cars too. by fluentindothraki (Tue 11th Jul 2023 7:11am)

You will be in a class with other people who for whatever reason couldn't get their grades in school (I got chatting with a few people doing their highest there and it was a mix of immigrants, people who missed school because of health issues, people who left school early to become carers or parents or went straight to work at 16 and wanted something different. • Spider plants and certain cacti do well, as does Tradescantia (wandering Jew). Any plant with leaves with dark red undersides don't need much light, and plants with thick shiny dark leaves are usually good at dealing with cold temperatures. If you can also hang up some pictures, your close might end up as nice as ours where it's always a joy to come home by fluentindothraki (Mon 17th Jul 2023 9:48pm)

  • I moved here 20 years ago from a country with cold winters and hot summers. Scotland doesn't get very cold or very hot, you will probably be a wee bit miserable in winter when the days are short, dark and wet. Best remedy is to spend as much time outdoors during daylight as you can manage. Scotland is amazingly beautiful, plenty of places within easy reach of Glasgow to go to. If you play golf, the place is practically crawling with golf courses. Umbrellas don't work most of the time because our rain usually brings along his best pal, the Atlantic gale. by fluentindothraki (Tue 18th Jul 2023 2:41pm)

Also, among the many things mice are likely to eat: candles Eucalyptus oil helps btw (with mice, not Rats): put some on a wad of cotton wool or a piece of cloth in a corner of each room, and the next day top up and put a second one in the diagonal corner, 3rd day top up the first two and add a third corner. Then he used another place called Toads Caravan on Pollokshaws Road but that wasn't his cup of tea (and they closed too). There is office space to let in the nameless street where the Shawbank Clubhouse is, sort of behind the Roundhouse Aldi. Could be that there are just too many dogs now, and during the Covid years, a lot of people got their first dog , with not enough options to socialise their puppies and not enough contact/ exchange with experienced dog owners. My impression is that there are more dogs, and a higher percentage of owners who are overprotective of their dogs and not strict / consistent enough. by fluentindothraki (Fri 28th Jul 2023 10:18am)

One was a guy working nearby who offered to be my lunch buddy, another one had bought and written a card that he left on the check out , which had his phone number and asked me if I ever wanted to meet for a coffee or dinner. One guy actually bought me flowers (red roses) and that was not ok (i was seeing someone at the time so I found the choice of flowers a bit presumptuous). • TBF, people in the UK don't stare as a rule, and if someone does, it feels a bit intrusive. So for a woman to walk past a group of men who stare at her can be fucking uncomfortable. by fluentindothraki (Wed 8th Nov 2023 2:11pm)
  • It's a small but god awful minority that is giving everyone else a bad name. I have worked with people from all over Europe and I was often quite concerned how often even very laid back, tolerant, leftie colleagues from Eastern Europe were quite down on the Roma... Well, that kind of Roma, I am sure there are tons of Roma who are absolutely not like that. by fluentindothraki (Wed 8th Nov 2023 8:34pm)

  • https://www.timeout.com/news/glasgow-has-been-named-the-worlds-friendliest-city-071222 That happened twice! But I agree that these things can't be measured. Most foreign people that I met in Glasgow think it's really friendly but I met a few who didn't feel like that - but then, 2 of those couldn't understand the accent which is admittedly challenging. by fluentindothraki (Tue 14th Nov 2023 7:35am)
  • Back in our renting days, whenever one of us moved, we would say we lay down a cleaning deposit and then clean ourselves and if it wasn't perfect, we would pay for the not perfect parts (but they had to snow us pictures /proof).. Then we would get together, depending on the size and state of the flat, and would clean every room from top to bottom, including inside all cupboards and under things etc, then we would do photos / videos. We never had to pay. But it was a day out of our lives that we spent together, listening to music and chatting while cleaning. I have fond memories of that! by fluentindothraki (Thu 16th Nov 2023 6:18am)

  • Please please please get good strong lights back and front, and for bonus points wear something really visible (hiviz). I know a sneaky cyclist who has a blue flashing dog colour on his bike which looks a bit like police lights which really helps to make drivers pay attention! I definitely always look out for cyclists when I drive but some of them make it hard to see them: dark clothes, no lights, and shooting around corners. by fluentindothraki (Mon 20th Nov 2023 8:31am)

  • Can I ask you one big favour for driving in Scotland? You will find that most roads have either one lane each direction, or one lane for both directions. Chances are you are used to wider roads, and drive on the other side back home. We all want you to drive safely, at a speed that suits you - but please please please let people overtake. We enjoy the beauty of our country but we also have to catch dead lines, have appointments, have kids to pick up or trains to catch, plus we know the roads and the weather conditions. Please have an eye on the back mirror and nip into lay-bys and passing laces to let others get past you. Hope you have a great holiday, and don't worry, Scotland is a pretty safe place. by fluentindothraki (Mon 27th Nov 2023 9:49pm)
  • I often drive slow just because it's really beautiful, and let people pass. You are on holiday and not on the run! Hope you will have an amazing time, and thank you! by fluentindothraki (Mon 27th Nov 2023 9:56pm)

Weirdly enough, I enjoyed that job a lot - even though I could not have imagined how disgusting people can be.
