  • Just my theory. But in todays terms there's very little concrete evidence linking the murders except some similarities in MO. The first murder was a full year or more before the other two so an unexplained gap. Also the first murder (pat docker) its not clear what her movements were or if she even went to the barrowlands. The press really drove the idea of "Bible John" based on the testimony of a traumatised women who had lost her sister and was likely the worse for wear when she shared a taxi with "John". All im saying is there could be other explanations that a lone killer. by Alarming_Mix5302 (Sun 18th Jul 2021 9:09am)

  • I guarantee that no matter how frazzled you are with it your neighbours will be even more so. They have to actually live in the same flat as the kid so bear that in mind. They will be exhausted and at their wits end and the last thing they will respond to are threats, police, the council etc. Just something to bear in mind by Alarming_Mix5302 (Thu 29th Jul 2021 12:41pm)

A damp patch near a window will almost certainly either be a faulty window (there's a gap) or condensation gathering on the panes and dripping down. by Alarming_Mix5302 (Thu 30th Sep 2021 12:40pm)

  • Ignore the price listed on zoopla. Find the home report value and add up to 15% onto it depending on area. You will need to come up with that 15% in cash on top of your deposit, as your lender will only lend up to the home report value. Find yourself an independent mortgage adviser and have an initial chat, they will help break it down for you, go through your finances etc and see whats achievable for you. • Yeah there's a strike on. by Alarming_Mix5302 (Sun 7th Nov 2021 9:42am)
  • This is a common issue post-COVID. Particularly in jobs traditionally perceived as 'low status' and done by middle aged men. It's across the board, in the US, UK and across the 'developed world'. Folk have been furloughed, then either took early retirement or retrained. They don't want to go back to doing the bins or driving a lorry. Also this demographic have been hit hard by COVID in health terms. Meanwhile everyone is sitting at home ordering goods from China causing at one end a supply chain crisis and at the other end a waste crisis by Alarming_Mix5302 (Mon 8th Nov 2021 9:30am)

  • the strike ended at midnight. However the dispute is rumbling on, and more strikes are threatened in the runup to Xmas. It's going to take a while for GCC to clear the backlog. I would try and get your neighbours and the factor to talk about the issue and see if there is a solution - even making sure the bins are accessible for the binmen when they eventually do get round to coming over can help, as a last resort take some of the excess yourself or try to ask folk to stop adding to the pile by Alarming_Mix5302 (Tue 9th Nov 2021 8:22am)
  • I noticed some Aussie dudes who worked in the fossil fuel industry in a pub last week. They were definitely here to lobby COP. • I guess it's not great, but within the context of what's already there (a garage forecourt/service area with concessions) it doesn't seem that hugely terrible to me. I suppose it could increase cars a wee bit? But it's already a business set up to service cars. I get people think the owners are arseholes but that's nothing to do with the planning permission. Having said all that, if it goes through then it establishes the planning principle of having a drive-through on site, which may be their long-term plan, i.e. turn the whole thing into a big drive-through site, which then makes it potentially more valuable land, which they could flog to Starbucks or whoever. by Alarming_Mix5302 (Fri 12th Nov 2021 9:15am)

  • Langside is a historical village which was centred where Langside place and the monument are. The name is medieval and means long hill. The Battle of Langside took place in 1568, and when they built the tenements on the floodplain of the Cart in the early 20th century they named the new district Battlefield as it was in an area close to the fighting. Battlefield is a district of Langside if anything. In reality the name Langside now adheres to the whole bit which is on the hill south of QP, algie st, mansionhouse Rd millbrae Road, and Battlefield is everything from the bottom of the hill from Sinclair drive south basically until cathcart by Alarming_Mix5302 (Wed 24th Nov 2021 5:47pm)

This would be either through being a listed building or if they are in a conservation area. The main reason more aren't double glazed, however, is that the landlords who own a large percentage of the tenement stock in the west end (for example) aren't going to spend the money to change the windows as they don't have to live there. by Alarming_Mix5302 (Sat 4th Dec 2021 6:05pm)

Most students live around the west end, so if you are looking for your typical retail/supermarket job then try further afield as I'm sure the Byres rd shops get 10 students a day dropping in with CVs Bars are another typical employer but that industry has been hammered by covid again remember to try town rather than just the west end Obviously you have all your delivery type jobs but you'll need some form of transport, in some of those you are effectively self employed Sign up for some recruitment/temp agencies by Alarming_Mix5302 (Sun 20th Feb 2022 9:22am)
  • Your house has gone up because the property market is in a bubble. New builds are inflated in price as they are new and also due to the effects schemes such as H2B have in effectively printing money and handing it to developers. Look at 2008, 2009 new builds typically get hammered. Of course this is a generalisation and there are exceptions. Good luck by Alarming_Mix5302 (Mon 21st Feb 2022 11:51pm)

  • as a regular user of said playpark can confirm that it is pretty shabby. It needs to come up to the standards of other playparks in the other major Glasgow parks, which mainly seem to all be much better. There is council funding available for this at the moment apparently so hopefully something gets done, and I have no idea why this particular playpark is looking so bad right now. it does get a lot of use, as it serves a very wide area. To be fair to the council they have recently fixed some of the equipment, but there has been a spate of things getting broken, mainly by drunk teenagers at night. by Alarming_Mix5302 (Thu 31st Mar 2022 1:40pm)

  • Depends what you are after. Govanhill is still imo very dirty but rapidly gentrifying. Split between hipsters, London blow ins, and various middle class white kids with their trousers rolled up past their ankles who will say its the best place, and immigrant communities (including Roma from Slovakia and Romania) who live in some extreme poverty. In and amongst it you also find glasgwegians who have been there for generations and a big mix of other communities of immigrant background, Pakistani to Irish and about 60 other nationalities in between. So its a very lively place in many ways. There were some notorious streets with barely habitable flats filled with cockroaches and bedbugs but the next close along could be lovely and well kept. There are lots of community efforts to improve it, tied with the gentrifying process, which no doubt will mean the immigrant communities get slowly pushed out and the hipsters take over, over the next years. Prices have rocketed in the last 2 or 3 years. Good luck. by Alarming_Mix5302 (Sun 3rd Apr 2022 7:47am)

  • The only late bar (1am) is Linen which is OKish. Glad Cafe for gigs and pizza. Corona is lovely inside but always a bit dead after, well corona. Sweeneys is lively with music on most nights, older crowd. Phillies can be fun with djs etc on, Granary is OK, Finlays is for yer maw on cocktails, coke and karaoke, shout out to The Quaich as a proper cheap old man pub. Then the ivory and church on the hill towards Langside have outdoor seating and are popular on Hampden match days, do ok food etc but nothing particularly special imo Round Cathcart/B'field/MoFlo, you've got Armstrongs which has some lively nights on but a mixed crowd of older and younger with big screens beer 'garden' pool tables Scotland flags and the college across the road. Clockwork used to be ok but a bit sanitised since its recent renovation. Florida Park is for older locals and karaoke. Avoid this area if there's anything on at Hampden. IMO the best pubs are around Strathbungo/Govanhill - Allison Arms, Heraghtys, Rum Shack, Stag and Thistle, Brodie's ok for a sunny table. March town for a wanky craft beer. McNeills is a dive but lively and has been taken over by London art students, QPC ok for a mix of locals/hipsters. Bell Jar for a gentrified old man pub. by Alarming_Mix5302 (Tue 7th Jun 2022 8:39am)

Glasgow public transport is ridiculously over complicated, too many suppliers and tickets, and overpriced. • You need to find out where they are breeding and laying eggs, where the wee worm/caterpillars are. By the time they are flying they are no longer eating and killing them then does very little to reduce numbers. They are eating something in your carpets, clothes cupboards or drawers. If you have old furniture or stuff from charity shops get rid. Clean and hoover everything. Throw out anything infested. Put all your clothes in the freezer overnight then seal in vacuum bags. Keep hoovering, rinse and repeat. Lavender, mothballs may help deter new infestations but right now your only real solution is total cleaning and throwing out everything infested. Have no mercy. Good luck. by Alarming_Mix5302 (Fri 24th Jun 2022 7:01am)

Since the end of T we've had an upsurge in (a) wanker behaviour at multiple city-park based substitute concerts- all these acts used to just play T but now there's a stadium/Park gig every other week (b) general wanker dirty camper behaviour with folk rocking up to the Highlands, having a mad weekend in tents, lighting fires, bbqs then dumping their stuff, as if they are at T. by Alarming_Mix5302 (Mon 4th Jul 2022 6:11pm)

They messed me about once for a booking (let me book a car which didnt actually exist yet and tried to fob me off with a completely different class of vehicle, a wee electric car when i needed a family sized one to go a long distance on a motorway). Sometimes the cars can be manky, but its a trade off for convenience. • I doubt you will get a mortage as PhD student, however do go and make an appointment with an independent whole-of-market mortgage advisor (we used First Mortgage who were pretty good) who can talk you through your options. Do not speak to an in-house mortgage advisor at a bank or building society, they will be trying to sell you their employer's product and won't look at the whole market. When looking at house prices, ignore the 'offers over' price- request the Home Report and get the Home Report Value (HRV) from it - this is the maximum you will be able to get a mortgage for. When bidding, it's a closed bid system. People routinely bid north of 10% over the HRV. This extra 10% is cash on top of the mortage and your cash deposit. If I was you I wouldn't buy right now as the market is almost certainly going to tank in 6-12 months. by Alarming_Mix5302 (Fri 9th Sep 2022 3:43pm)

  • Its not a theory, its a fact. licencing works by looking at each bar on its merits, they can ask certain pubs to follow certain rules based on their own specific circumstsnces and constraints. Inn deep is about 100 times busier than lock 27 for a start. Also as I recall L27 has a few tables that can be accessed wothout having to walk on the NCP. Inn Deep is directly constrained, ie you cant get to the outside arch without walking on the NCP. I dont know about West. by Alarming_Mix5302 (Fri 16th Sep 2022 9:53am)

  • Dublin has a bit nicer climate and pretty seaside areas like Sandycove, Killiney, Howth. It's atrociously expensive as others have noted. You're close to the Wicklow hills which are pretty but no match for Loch Lomond etc to be honest. Dublin is very touristy and international, more like Edinburgh. Actually Glasgow is more like Belfast for many reasons not just sectarianism. The Irish descendant community of Glasgow originated mainly from Ulster and Donegal. Culturally it has more in common to the North while Dublin has historic connections to England in particular Liverpool and to some extent London. by Alarming_Mix5302 (Wed 7th Dec 2022 9:01pm)

  • Buses in Edinburgh are great and easy, only one company, flat fare, decent app, screens/announcements to tell you where you are, etc. Also they have a small tram network. All operated by the same public owned company. Buses in Glasgow are hellish by comparison. Multiple companies, multiple ticket types. However Glasgow has the subway (ran by SPT and not subject to the current strikes) and an OK suburban rail network (operated by Scotrail and subject to the current strikes). Glasgow also has public bike rentals (currently OVO bikes/nextbikes) which Edinburgh doesnt have. Edinburgh is hell for traffic, tourists and big hills, and the North Bridge is shut for the next eternity, lacks anything other than buses and the odd tram. Also they built the main train station at the bottom of a big hole in the ground so is terrible for accessibility. by Alarming_Mix5302 (Tue 27th Dec 2022 12:05pm)

  • Car clubs are good for this. As long as you live near an available car, it's better than trad car rental as there's no deposits and no hidden charges except if you cause serious damage. The downsides are availability (you'll need to book way in advance to get a popular car)and the car wont be valeted after each use. If you're ok with electric vehicles they tend to be less used. I've used cowheels for 8 years and have generally had a good service, except for a couple of notable occasions. For example if for any reason you book a car and they can't provide the car (eg it broke down prior to your booking) they have no obligation to provide an equivalent replacement car. One time i had a family sized car booked for a family trip, they couldnt provide it and tried to rebook me onto a wee EV which wasnt suitable. I ended up having to book from a trad car hire company last minute at great expense. by Alarming_Mix5302 (Tue 3rd Jan 2023 2:34pm)

  • Its physics, sound is made of waves of energy, the lower frequency they are the more energy they contain and the more mass required to stop them. Eggboxes are light cardboard and dont stop sound passing through, but they can reflect some very high frequencies and stop them bouncing around. Making your space less sound-reflective will have some effect on how you perceive neighbour noise, as that sound wont be reverberating and amplifying in your space. However, it wont stop it coming through in the first place. To do that you need to put dense material in the way and stop as many pathways of travel as possible, eg by building decoupled false walls and ceilings. Or, just get some noise cancelling headphones, or move out.... by Alarming_Mix5302 (Tue 10th Jan 2023 5:51pm)

  • Ok, it would be very, very expensive. It would run directly under a lot of peoples houses. It would impact popular business (inn deep? Roots and fruits?). It would sever the Kelvin walkway. Not to mention having an actual train rumbling through the botanics and kelvingrove. All for serving an extra line to an area of the city which.... is the richest and best served for public transport anyway. It's a terrible idea. by Alarming_Mix5302 (Wed 22nd Feb 2023 10:47pm)
  • It stands to reason if we are talking about reopening the old finnieston-botanics line, using its old tunnels which go under the botanics, past kelvinbridge, in the old tunnel by inn deep, under gwr to the botanics. You can extrapolate fairly easily it would have a bunch of negative effects for questionable benefits. Cost wise we could look at similar schemes (eg trams in edinburgh, manchester etc) and assume in 2020s price it will not be cheap. by Alarming_Mix5302 (Wed 22nd Feb 2023 11:09pm)
  • So knocking down dozens of perfectly useful homes in order to rebuild a railway out of use for 90 years? That's nuts. by Alarming_Mix5302 (Thu 23rd Feb 2023 7:12am)
  • Well you can grab an old map, trace the old line which runs from finnieston/stobcross to maryhill, look at the entrances to the old tunnels under kelvingrove and thr botanics, look at the bits at kirklee and kelvindale which now how have flats on them. The line would cut the kelvin walkway at kelvinbridge, and have trains running by businesses and homes near the line, for the first time since the 1930s. The fact the M8 is excluded while also running through the city tells you all you need to know. Note its nothing to do with carbon dioxide but rather polluting emmissions. Hence diesels are targetted despite having instrinsically lower carbon than petrols Within a few years they'll no doubt expand it and make it Euro 6 for all vehicles by Alarming_Mix5302 (Mon 27th Feb 2023 3:08pm)

  • No. Site Health and Safety is supposed to exclude anyone without clearance and without health and safety training. If kids were getting in continually as you say then its entirely the fault of the construction company not putting up proper fences and not providing proper security. Wee kids getting in and messing about is a risk at every construction site. Placing the blame on parents is pure victim blaming, sorry. by Alarming_Mix5302 (Fri 14th Apr 2023 3:58pm)
  • What are they supposed to do? Keep the kids out. Put up proper fences, employ security guards, involve the police if necessary. by Alarming_Mix5302 (Fri 14th Apr 2023 4:00pm)
  • Ive worked on construction sites and know health and safety, trust me its the fault of the company. They should have assessed the issue with the kids and dealt with it. All sites are vulnerable to kids getting in. If theres no way of stopping them then cover the manhole. The company knew and didnt do their job. Happens all the time. by Alarming_Mix5302 (Fri 14th Apr 2023 4:18pm)

  • Do you understand how H & S law works on construction sites? Inadequate fencing and uncovered manholes are the contractors fault. A kid falls down a hole and dies? Almost certainly the contractors responsibilty unless they can demonstrate they did absolutely everything to stop it, which very clearly they didnt as there was a gap in the heras fence and the hole was left uncovered. And they would have known about the kids issue. Blaming the dead kid's parents is absoluty wild. by Alarming_Mix5302 (Sat 15th Apr 2023 9:11am)
  • Nope its on the contractors digging massive holes with massive 13 ton machines to protect their workers and the public. Kids are kids and will do stupid shit. So we should just rely on parents "teaching kids' on safeguarding dangerous construction sites? Thats not how the law works, its not how reality works. by Alarming_Mix5302 (Sat 15th Apr 2023 9:27am)

  • Maybe read the law, stop victim blaming, and work out for yourself why the courts found the contactors liable. Bit of homework for you. by Alarming_Mix5302 (Sat 15th Apr 2023 9:58am)
  • OP's opinion on someone else's parenting (after their %%$$$ing kid has died) is completely irrelevant! If your kid died after running in front of a car, do you blame the parents??? Same thing. The people in charge of the big dangerous machine/car/big hole in the ground have the burden of proof to demonstrate they arent responsible. 100% correct in the law and how it should be. by Alarming_Mix5302 (Sat 15th Apr 2023 10:19am)
  • It's irrelevant. Kids, "bad parents" or whatever, occur everywhere. Its a known risk. If you operate a dangerous construction site it's 100% your responsibility to assess that risk and mitigate. That's the burden of responsibility under the law and that's exactly what the court has ruled on here. Shifting blame onto hearsay of 'bad parenting' is completely absurd and legally, nonsense. by Alarming_Mix5302 (Sat 15th Apr 2023 10:34am)
  • Because your opinion/ hearsay/tut tutting re: someone's supposed parenting skills (or lack of) is completely irrelevant. There are a raft of laws and procedures to prevent workplace accidents in particular on construction sites. They need to risk assess and mitigate whatever the site specific risks are, including kids getting on, animals, whatever. They didnt do that adequately and the courts have ruled. You are the one victim blaming, based off hearsay on a reddit post, so maybe you need to ask yourself a few questions. by Alarming_Mix5302 (Sat 15th Apr 2023 11:00am)

You may need to buy from the train operators website to get these (eg Avanti for the West Coast Mainline, Scotrail etx). Make sure to only rent from the same time on the day you pick up and drop off (ie 12-12) .Most car rentals are based from the airport. Instead of buying the rental companies add-on insurance protection, shop around for 3rd party providers. Some will lure you in with low prices only to sting you on extra charges for minor marks and scuffs. Personally I used to use enterprise, not because they were cheap but because they had an office in town, and were reasonable with fair wear and tear. by Alarming_Mix5302 (Sun 21st May 2023 10:38am)

  • In order to take beer outside at Inn Deep you have to step directly onto a public footpath (kelvin walkway) which is a core path and also part of a national cycle route, important for active travel etc. Theres no way to take a pint to the outdoor bit without stepping onto that path. Also on busy days it can get very busy very fast, and they dont have the staff to manage glass collection when folk are spilling all along the river. So Im led to believe it's to help them maintain their outdoor licence which has been threatened at various times due to issues with the path, crowds etc. They used to allow glass outside and also had seating directly by the river but had to lose them due to issues with drunk crowds blocking cyclists basically. by Alarming_Mix5302 (Tue 30th May 2023 2:20pm)
  • Well the fact I had to repeat myself shows how much you've thought about the site specific constraints at Inn Deep. Im just relaying what Ive learned from the folk that run the place. Lock 27 has outdoor seating which you dont need to cross onto the path to get to and is about ten times less busy. But dont let facts intrude on your wee moan by Alarming_Mix5302 (Tue 30th May 2023 3:03pm)
  • Im very much willing to bet they arent supposed to put tables there.... as the canal towpath is scottish canals land and a protected monument, but in any case they have a bit of beer garden which youve ignored which is off the towpath. He seems to be taking a more front facing role this time, which is not a particularly good look, as many folk find his political shenanigans questionable, not to mention he ended up in the jail recently, etc etc. I cant see how it helps a beleagured festival rebuild its tattered reputation by having this guy giving press statements. by Alarming_Mix5302 (Thu 8th Jun 2023 3:34pm)
  • Small festivals have volunteers running the bars, doing traffic, security, build up, take down etc. They normally work a couple of shifts in exchange for free access to the festival. • Getting rid of traffic lights may be fine if you arent a child, lacking mobility, or in any way afraid of crossing busy traffic. On my daily nursery run I cross at least five dangerous junctions/intersections and one very narrow and dangerous pavement. Not one has a protected crossing of any sort. While actual institutions like the Note are left in the ownership of folk who palbably dont give a shit. The current owner bought it over 20 years ago, as a going concern, from Craig Tannock's administrators, and has invested basically nothing in the place since... its an actual miracle the place still exists, and its due entirely to the passion of the staff not the owner. • Some things seem easy to fix, eg banning bus companies using the same numbering system for entirely different routes (ie getting a mcgills no 4 and ending up in Shawlands when you wanted a First no 4 to Cathcart). Having the Zonecard work via an app not an outdated physical ticket. Also integrated tickets/oyster card type tickets were easy to sort out for COP but not for the people of Glasgow the rest of the time. What a wasted opportunity for a genuine legacy from that event - you could have even called them Greta cards ffs. • OK, my original point was that Scotland has played a historically important role in exporting this type of religious dogma around the world, and it's ironic, to me, that it is coming back to haunt us. The first point is one of historic fact; the second, you can take or leave. You have chosen to interpret that as me being happy that a lady was shouted at in Milngavie. That's entirely your interpretation, and I didn't say that. However, I can see why you may have thought I implied that. by Alarming_Mix5302 (Sat 5th Aug 2023 6:15pm)
