  • Red Raw at the Stand Comedy Club could be a decent fit. 2 quid entry last time I checked, likely to be heaving though so would get there early. by JagsFraz71 (Mon 14th Jan 2019 6:34pm)
  • Banana Leaf on Old Dumbarton road does a ton of brilliant vegan food. Cant argue with 7 quid for a curry and rice either. Sitting in wise it’s BYOB for free too - if you’re ok with eating on garden furniture... by JagsFraz71 (Thu 14th Mar 2019 7:18pm)
  • Black Sheep Bistro is quality mum lunch territory. Just really good, massive portioned Scottish food. by JagsFraz71 (Sun 31st Mar 2019 3:59pm)
  • Depending on when your lectures start you might be alright in the car. Getting to the outskirts of Edinburgh is easy, getting anywhere in Edinburgh during rush hour will generally take you the same amount of time it took to get there in the first place. There are places you could park for free but that would probably involve jumping on a bus or a 30-45 min walk to the uni. I’ve just came through the other side of 18 months of commuting and would never recommend it as a long term option to anyone. by JagsFraz71 (Fri 30th Aug 2019 6:50pm)

  • Have a look at Yorkhill - a 25 min walk to the city centre. Maybe 20 to the BBC etc down on the Clyde. You get the convenience of being near enough to walk to work (presuming you’ll be centrally based) and also get all the pubs in Finnieston and great food (huge international student population = class places to eat) 5 min walk to Kelvingrove park/15 from the Botanic gardens for a wander or a sly beer in the sun, if it comes out. Top end of your budget but doable I would say by JagsFraz71 (Sat 21st Sep 2019 9:59am)

  • Family member worked for them and said they were alright. Probably a slightly daft thing to say but they are a business at the end of the day so the grading systems and assessments etc do seem a little arbitrary and geared towards £. Have a look at swimming clubs like Ren 96, City of Glasgow, M&B - plus side is that if they enjoy it they have a pathway to competitive swimming or a more regular hobby by JagsFraz71 (Thu 30th Jan 2020 8:46pm)
  • Got to be the Grove in Finnieston. An island of actual Glasgow in amongst the 8 quid pints and flappy, flappy bingo wings by JagsFraz71 (Thu 14th May 2020 5:26pm)
  • My Ex is a clinical Psychologist and she was trained in DBT by the NHS. So I presume DBT is available free of charge but waiting lists etc are probably your issue there. Worth getting your name down though, I would think by JagsFraz71 (Sat 30th May 2020 3:58pm)
  • Never really took much notice of this until recently, although I remember it being built originally when I was a kid. With all the land behind Milngavie Road on the railway line you’d think there would be scope to stick a cycle path through there beside the golf club and on past the Allander and the Rugby club etc. Would also mean you would only have to navigate through Kessington on roads to cycle from the west end to Milngavie by JagsFraz71 (Sat 20th Jun 2020 8:40am)
  • Presuming you start in Kelvingrove you take the Kelvin Walkway down passed Inn Deep, Botanics etc through to Dawsholm Park, then go through Dawsholm Park straight in to The Science Park at Garscube. So you pop out on to Maryhill road just passed the Arnold Clarke garage in Kessington. Decent cycle/walk down the Kelvin by JagsFraz71 (Sat 20th Jun 2020 8:50am)
  • I do enjoy the desperate vaguely sectarian sign off’s you receive every time you put anything on there for free. ‘Is table still available thanks .dave 1690’ True story by JagsFraz71 (Wed 24th Jun 2020 7:03pm)
  • Bike Bunker in town are picking up and dropping off (or at least were a fortnight ago..) Can recommend - new peddles, second hand bike adjusted and serviced and delivered back to my door in a week by JagsFraz71 (Wed 24th Jun 2020 10:10pm)
  • Not what you’re asking for but I also suffer from chronic pain related to muscle/nerve issues. Acupuncture is what helps me best and the place I go is doing ‘emergency’ apps one day a week at the moment. If you give me a shout i can give you the details by JagsFraz71 (Sun 28th Jun 2020 6:09pm)
  • Partick/Yorkhill/North Kelvinside would be my shout there. Get yourself a decent 1 bed or a 2 if you’re lucky beside the botanics, kelvingrove and a ton of pub’s and places to eat etc You’d never be any further than a 40 odd minute walk in to town anywhere there either and have the subway, bus or potentially train if you’re in Partick by JagsFraz71 (Sat 4th Jul 2020 7:25pm)
  • There’s some great private teachers around who will generally be competitive swimmers who make a bit of dough on the side. Only issue with that is finding a pool that will allow anything resembling a private lesson (I’ve been on both sides there as a teacher and lifeguard enforcing the rules). Generally these people will have both their lifeguard and coaching qualification so are a safe bet, worth checking though. Gumtree, Facebook and the Swimming Clubs are probably your route to these guys. by JagsFraz71 (Tue 28th Jul 2020 8:18am)
  • They were awful when I rented from them in Stirling back 07-11. They got removed from the uni recommended agencies due to generally being a bunch of charlatans and ripping people off by JagsFraz71 (Thu 30th Jul 2020 4:21pm)

  • Also would add you can now get a 25-30 railcard also. Saved me a mad amount when I was commuting Gla- Ed. More generally, don’t commute Ed-Gla - it is soul destroying whichever way you do it by JagsFraz71 (Sun 9th Aug 2020 5:34pm)
  • Its one of the old sandstone villas on Doune Gardens (a ground floor flat). Was hoping it would be similar to the Tenements I’ve lived in that you could stick it on the chimney but seems a bit more stringent up that neck of the woods! by JagsFraz71 (Tue 11th Aug 2020 10:45am)
  • Thats good to know cheers! by JagsFraz71 (Tue 11th Aug 2020 4:27pm)
  • From what I understand the place has some weird common ownership deed in place and no Factor. Like the upper flat owns the close and i just have a right to walk through it etc but i’m responsible for 1/3 of the roof costs. Was half the reason I’m trying to get my story straight before I bridge the dish thing in to it. Hopefully there’s one there already and this is no hassle though! by JagsFraz71 (Tue 11th Aug 2020 4:39pm)
  • Nothing stopping you driving in there. Have wondered past a couple times during lockdown. Sure you have to pay anyway though so no real advantage to just parking on Kelvin Way etc. by JagsFraz71 (Thu 13th Aug 2020 12:00pm)

  • My food waste bins were emptied for the first time in well over 6 months weekend before last- had my windows open and first I knew of it was the smell emanating from outside at 9am on a Sat morning. One of those ‘Have you shat yourself?’ aromas. Glanced out my window to find 2 guys in hamzat suits trying to pour one bin of brown sludge in to another while supervised by a man in a shirt and tie. Obviously they missed and spilled it on the ground - I shouted out the window as the tried to leave it there, brought them down a bucket of water and they cleaned it up. Went out to escape the smell - came back a couple hours later and they had spilled an entire bin of fermented chicken flaps in the close. Whole place has been fucking stinking for the entire time since - no bleach will touch it. And they dont pick up the phone.. Bins are now sitting proudly on the pavement as they just left then there? • Had personal experience with renting a rat infested flat about ten years ago. Just leave if you can - I had to get a lawyer to write a letter to the landlord explaining he was responsible for my health etc and he shat it and let us leave right away. Short term I cant say I had much luck with anything other than blocking holes.. the traps work but then the council take weeks to collect dead rats and the dead rats get eaten by the yet-to-be-dead rats.. beautiful circle of life continues by JagsFraz71 (Mon 24th Aug 2020 3:47pm)
  • Without sounding like a dick - Non Viet is way way more like the Vietnamese food you get in Vietnam than the Bike Shop Is. Both good but try Non Viet if you haven’t already.. by JagsFraz71 (Tue 25th Aug 2020 9:23pm)
  • Not suggesting you chance it but I live relatively nearby and there are a ton of cars that clearly don’t have permits around - seems like since lockdown the wardens aren’t back to usual yet. If you’re not driving it regularly you could also park for free within a ten min walk of there... by JagsFraz71 (Tue 25th Aug 2020 10:13pm)

  • You can make a case for any of them but first is ideal in my mind. You steal some of downstairs heating, can leave all your windows open whenever you want and nobody is walking past and looking in. Definitely think roof is more of a ‘you’ issue if you’re in the top flat though. 6 weeks to get everyone to chip in to fix a leak is less reasonable when it’s in your gaff by JagsFraz71 (Sun 4th Oct 2020 12:01am)

Like Barclays values are ‘Respect, Integrity, Service, Excellence, Stewardship’ so make sure you research what they actually mean by that on their info https://home.barclays/who-we-are/our-strategy/purpose-and-values. • Your deposit has to be held by the independent deposit scheme in Scotland so your landlord can’t keep it and then refuse to pay you it back. Make sure they pass it over within 30 days. If they don’t then just don’t pay your last months rent, ask them to use the invoice to cover and then settle any invoices for damages as and when they arrive. by JagsFraz71 (Sun 6th Dec 2020 10:42am)

  • FWIW - care packages are a nice thought but you’re usually better getting a local Australian company who sells Scottish stuff to deliver. Saves the 10,000 miles of travel, it’ll be cheaper and they’ll get it sooner. Also, in Aus you get massive British sections in supermarkets so anything non-perishable is easy to access (Irn Bru, shortbread etc) I sent my Scottish family in Sydney a selection of stuff from this place last Xmas. https://davidslarder.com.au/ - Square sausage, black pudding and tattie scones etc. There’s also places that do Tennents etc but that can be pretty expensive. by JagsFraz71 (Mon 28th Dec 2020 1:05am)

  • If you have the opportunity to go to somewhere in the city.. Strathy, Cali, Glasgow etc I would say thats the first option. Nothing against UWS, just you’d likely have a far better time with far more to do than living out in the sticks by JagsFraz71 (Mon 25th Jan 2021 2:10pm)
  • Just from experience, remember uni isn’t all about the course. Socially you’d want the opportunities that Glasgow gives you (not at the moment clearly..) to meet people and do things you wont have as easy access to. Even nights out, a taxi back to Hamilton at 4am will cost you. You’ve got a class 4 years ahead of you were you get to be a pretend adult and meet people/ decide who you are either way but FWIW I’d rather that do that around interesting places/opportunities than be in Blantyre by JagsFraz71 (Tue 26th Jan 2021 2:55pm)

  • You need to be able to contribute 5% of total value. I used the full 25k for the FHF towards deposit. If you try and find a place that you can add some value to then there’s a fair chance you could leave yourself with a healthy deposit next time you move even with the government taking their equity back. Thats the idea - help you on to both the first and seconds steps of the ladder. by JagsFraz71 (Mon 15th Feb 2021 2:53pm)
  • The standard answer is always - it’s as safe as any other city. But I wouldn’t regularly walk around any other city centre at 4am either on my own. Have a look at some of the recent incidents in the city centre. Lots of desperate vulnerable people being failed by the system housed in the same place. It’s not a warzone but its not really a street-smart thing to do regularly imo by JagsFraz71 (Tue 16th Feb 2021 10:57pm)

  • Uni Cafe on Byers Road sells them - not East End but yeah... by JagsFraz71 (Tue 2nd Mar 2021 10:53pm)
  • It’s a weird one. Sometimes you’re actually better finding a place with a slightly ‘too high’ Home report value. Especially seeing as that’s your mortgage benchmark and you can use things like the first home fund towards that value. I bought a flat in the west end at home report in August after 9 months odd of what you’re doing. Upped budget but used governments dough for deposit then used the saved deposit to renovate it. Gov gets its money back when I sell and I get the cash back i put in to fix the place. There’s no real downside of stretching your mortgage term out a bit further to make a bigger outlay more affordable either -if you think you can add value and you’re not planning on living there forever you’re relatively safe with that provided you’ve bought something that will weather the coming storm. Nobody wants to be that guy but remember you could always rent it out short term if it loses value temporarily also. Better than falling off first rung of the ladder anyway. by JagsFraz71 (Tue 2nd Mar 2021 10:49pm)
  • Girlfriend raves about them. Until we needed a paper statement for a mortgage. Or a couple grand in cash for a builder. Or to pay in a cheque. I get the appeal but have an old school account somewhere with branches for the above also by JagsFraz71 (Wed 3rd Mar 2021 12:42pm)
  • Yeah, the PDF route isnt accepted everywhere. Some lenders/banks etc still need a proper paper statement, which you could walk in to a branch and have certified. Post not always the most convenient compared to just sticking it in a paying in hole in the wall on the way passed the branch. I have no issue with Monzo btw. Just think it’s newness makes people assume its the future when the old school stuff is still more convenient from one of the big guys by JagsFraz71 (Wed 3rd Mar 2021 12:50pm)
  • I think the point we all miss with modern buildings (other than the fact they are smaller and darker) is that yeah, they are more energy efficient. But when they fall apart in 30 years and need to be torn down and rebuilt because they were thrown up using the cheapest stuff around that uses a huge amount of energy and resource. The tenements are timeless and need to be brought up to date wherever possible by JagsFraz71 (Thu 4th Mar 2021 11:46am)
  • Most of the Tenement kitchens are far bigger than new builds. If you have a small kitchen in a tenement it’s because someone has changed the layout to make the larger kitchen a bedroom. Long bathrooms are a cool feature also - much preferable to everyone having the same soulless bathing cube. Agree re the materials point- although they often stand out pretty badly. There’s a few red brick ‘tenement style’ flats in Partick and North Kelvinside and they look strange in comparison. Imagine they’re nicer places to live than some other new builds though by JagsFraz71 (Thu 4th Mar 2021 12:03pm)
  • We’re not talking about not building new houses, this is about preserving the old one’s also. The rest is all personal preference - a lot of people prioritise bright, bigger spaces and more ‘traditional’ aesthetics when buying a house. Lived in some bad and better new build flats, but all felt comparatively very flimsy and dark in comparison. by JagsFraz71 (Thu 4th Mar 2021 11:59am)
  • It’s worth it but its painful. I’m one room away from a place I could never have afforded otherwise. But tbf i’ll be paying for other stuff for years..doing windows one at a time etc. As someone else said, take the hit and try snd carry a rental and a mortgage for a few months. Everything will overrun on your renovation - also try do it in Summer/Spring/ Autumn, not December -March like this dickhead did. You could use the First Home Fund to bump up your deposit so you can use the cash to renovate instead. Govt own a bit of your gaff but you’ll still make cash out of it if you’re smart when doing it up by JagsFraz71 (Sat 6th Mar 2021 1:15pm)

  • Aye, each to their own. I lived with them for 8 years - 5 years of thinking they were class then 3 of hating all the stuff stuck between them and how hard they were to clean etc. Found it really hard to keep the usual tenement visitors away with them also (moths, beetles etc) by JagsFraz71 (Fri 12th Mar 2021 8:30pm)

  • Generally Tenements are hard to adjust to for a few months if you’ve never lived in one. You’ll be colder, hear more of your neighbours and possibly meet a couple more bugs etc. You’ll get used to it and just be left with all the good stuff after a while. Don’t block the chimneys - mould as mentioned the obvious reason but they can also be dangerous if blocked for gas leaks and ignition etc by JagsFraz71 (Sat 27th Mar 2021 9:35pm)
  • Random one but as someone who gets bad hayfever you can get a shit ton of tab’s for 7/8 quid. Just get one box a year and it see’s me through most of the summer. Some of the seafood is class also - bag of dusted sole fillets and scallops/ prawns and mussels all good. Obvious ones are the pizzas, chickens and pastries by JagsFraz71 (Mon 29th Mar 2021 3:47pm)
  • Yeah, did this for 2 years. 7:15 train out and at best the 6PM train home. It is horrible, there’s no getting away from it - the cheapest way to do the train was the 25-30 railcard for me. You’ll get a seat 99% of the time from Queen St but it can get busy and standing room only further along the line. Make sure you get the express train from the high level and not the low level also, takes twice as long. Also, you can get a warm can of tennents from a trolley for those ‘fuck this noise’ days. What more could you ask for? by JagsFraz71 (Tue 30th Mar 2021 4:54pm)

  • Did Film Media/ Journalism at Stirling. Best part about it is they let you take elective modules in 1st and 2nd year outwith your degree so I took philosophy and sport studies etc to give it a bit of a freshen up at times. There’s a Journalism society but i never joined. Tbh - the course itself is hit and miss. It’s really shaped by the tutors there at the time. We had one module which was basically just ultra-feminist thinking disguised as modern cultural theory which made me feel uncomfortable. We also had to watch a man be beheaded in war studies and another lecturer (now at another uk uni) used to shout about ‘dying for your sources’. Don’t expect a job either - i know of 3 people who work in creative roles in the media from my year group Edit to add - Stirling is good fun to live in as a student though. Much better than UWS lifestyle wise. The campus is great too by JagsFraz71 (Fri 2nd Apr 2021 11:32am)
  • So I just did mine, involved taking out a doorway to make two rooms in to 1, moving the sink to new space, new dropped ceiling for spotlights, new flooring, tiling half the room and new bath, shower toilet etc Bought the suite ourselves from wholesale domestic out in hillington for 1700 quid all in then all the work (including new ceiling and new radiator) was 3600. • So without boring you... I’ve had 4 failed visits since January for the same reason. Gave up last week and just got Virgin. You need a specialist ‘working at heights team’ - the text you get confirming the booking is different to the normal one. The call centre are useless - they need to select a ‘special access team’ required box. The 4th time they turned up with the wrong people last week they rearranged for the end of May for the special team. So no chance they’re coming out quickly Only plus side is i’ve had free sky go and internet since January because of loss of service. Virgin seems alright so far..and cheaper by JagsFraz71 (Thu 22nd Apr 2021 9:57am)

  • Moved to North Kelvinside recently. 100% it is ‘rougher’ than the west end proper. Far more noise at night and general wee fannies around. Plus side, as you’ve no doubt noticed, is that you can get a bigger and more affordable place. by JagsFraz71 (Sun 25th Apr 2021 10:01am)
  • Yeah, sounds like the main issue is the guy being a knob about it. Still think the use as a garden trumps putting washing out though, at least during COVID. Have the opposite issue in my back close - one flat have monopolised the area with sun and put garden furniture etc out there (huge table and benches etc) so none of the rest of us can use it. • Glasgow is more of an actual city than Edinburgh so I would ask what you actually want to be near when living near the centre. You’ll get cinema’s, shops, pubs/clubs etc in other areas too. The West End / south side specifically. Green space wise, have a wonder from Kelvingrove down the kelvin walkway to the botanics. Easy to forget your in a city by JagsFraz71 (Wed 5th May 2021 2:51pm)
  • Depends if you’ll be working in the town I suppose. All relative on what is a hard commute also - I used to commute to the west end of Edinburgh from the West End of Glasgow for a 8:30 start everyday. You can walk to work in the city centre in around 30 mins from a lot of the west end. Check the factor fee’s and ask if there’s any HMO’s in the block (not necessarily a bad thing but you’ll have new neighbours every year which makes chances of a walloper arriving experientially higher) Does it have double glazing? • Think you may be reading too much in to the ‘back to England’ angle there. That sounds like someone being a non-specific arsehole. by JagsFraz71 (Tue 11th May 2021 9:33am)
  • Yeah, the difference being the intent? I’m Glaswegian - people sprout offensive shite to people all the time. I don’t assume it’s due to some sort of deeply held belief. Lets not get to a stage where every time someone of a particular group is offended it’s a hate crime. Sometimes people are just cunts for the sake of being cunts. Obviously less scope for virtue signalling taking things at face value though, which will be an issue for many. by JagsFraz71 (Tue 11th May 2021 10:32am)
  • You don’t get to tell me what I’m saying, bud. Entirely plausible this was some sort of awful racist incident. Then again, it could just be something that we all experience all the time living here. I’m surprised at the OP’s version of reality - have many English friends, been in relationships with people of different races and never experienced anything like that in Glasgow. Multiple times in a year and a vague example provided ring alarm bells. by JagsFraz71 (Tue 11th May 2021 10:56am)

  • Thats grim - wee wanks will be wee wanks I suppose. by JagsFraz71 (Tue 11th May 2021 2:41pm)
  • Hi pal - nice to have your cutting input here also. Quite the opposite, really. I presented a logical argument based on my own personal experience. Almost all of the points raised here are poster shows putting words in my mouth as they can’t comprehend that someone would challenge a perception of events. This is a grey area of interpretation - not a black and white, good vs evil self congratulatory circle-wank. Not agreeing that this was necessarily a xenophobic attack doesn’t mean I don’t think there are xenophobes in Glasgow. Thats the logic of a 5 year old. I’d suggest that if you can’t use words to make a point without descending in to name calling and self righteous butt-hurt then a wee break from the big bad internet and some personal reflection on your critical thinking skills may be in order. by JagsFraz71 (Tue 11th May 2021 4:09pm)

Personally i’d avoid it as i can be a bit of a warzone when the pubs and clubs close BUT I’d probably have enjoyed it in my late teens/early twenties. Have you looked elsewhere in the city? Centre isn’t always the best place to live, imo. by JagsFraz71 (Mon 17th May 2021 4:32pm)
  • Dermestid beetles are really common - you’ll see the big worm larvae guys around before they arrive proper. They’re nothing like bed bugs and generally scamper away when disturbed. Pretty gross but more of an annoyance than a life changer. by JagsFraz71 (Mon 17th May 2021 5:29pm)

  • Yeah, I know the ones you mean. I can see about 6 examples of them from my front window, which makes the whole convo with the window advice people even more perplexing. When you bought the place was it flagged to you that the previous owner hadn’t followed the planning stuff re restoring the original windows? by JagsFraz71 (Tue 18th May 2021 2:22pm)
  • Yeah, it’s a fair point. Sellers market I suppose - such a brutal system where the person who sold this place with the windows in the state they were had no questions asked. Agencies are best bet there - emphasise your banking experience and people skills etc. It’s hard to find a job to jump in to but once you’ve worked in ops for 6 months you’re more or less sorted for another job if you need one. by JagsFraz71 (Wed 26th May 2021 2:55pm)
  • The only long course pool in Glasgow is Tollcross and even then it’s mostly used as a 25m (movable beam). As others said Scotstoun is decent but closed - if you have a car the Allander out in Bearsden is cleaner and a good 25m pool. Arlington baths in woodlands is 20m but also very quiet so almost worth the extra length of your hundred instead of dodging people in your lane. by JagsFraz71 (Thu 27th May 2021 3:20pm)
  • Also a member of Arlington and it’s been alright for me. It’s not lane swimming at the moment so pool just split in to two - every time i’ve been in there’s been less than 3 people in my side and I’ve been able to just commandeer a part of the lane. There is a serious level of Granny breakstroke happening elsewhere though by JagsFraz71 (Thu 27th May 2021 6:59pm)
  • To be honest - unless you’re swimming in a structured club environment where everyone is in lane according to ability and following the same timed sets you’ll always have some issues with people getting in the way. Even triathletes when I used to compete would join the club for a short while and really struggle to not get in the way. Thankfully now I am much fatter so have less of these issues by JagsFraz71 (Fri 28th May 2021 10:03am)
  • I’m just out the Arli and can now see what you mean. I’ve been going later at night or early in the morning but that was just Granny soup as you say. Can barely get a length in without trying to dodge someone. You have the First home fund contributing 25k so you’re looking for 15k of savings between 2 people. 7.5k savings over a year where a lot of people haven’t had expensive holidays or days out etc is achievable for a lot people. The money to offer over the home report I have no idea but I imagine a lot of the cash parents would usually contribute towards a deposit is now getting used for this instead? Edit - You also have people already on the ladder. With prices as they are if they’re selling they’ll have extra cash to offer over by JagsFraz71 (Fri 4th Jun 2021 10:35am)
  • Fuck me, never realised that. by JagsFraz71 (Fri 4th Jun 2021 10:50am)
  • Same - feeling pretty lucky reading this. Managed to find a flat in the west end at home report value as well. Seems to be pretty rare based on the general vibe on here by JagsFraz71 (Fri 4th Jun 2021 11:28am)
  • Glasgow and Scotland in general is chronically underpopulated? Notice you’ve missed the Torries and their general mismanagement of the economy over the last 15 years... by JagsFraz71 (Fri 4th Jun 2021 11:32am)
  • Had that for 6 months odd last year. Really frustrating. Thing i realised is that if you’re paying over the home report value anyway, you want to find a place where the home report is ‘too high’. That way it’ll put people off and you’ll actually be able to mortgage the whole value of the flat. Found a place that’d been on sale for a few months and worked out how much it would take to make it nicer then offered below home report. Haggled back up to bang on home report value by the seller and now we had the couple grand we had saved to offer over to fix the kitchen and repaint the place etc. Hoping the work we’ve done adds value whenever we sell it anyway so hopefully a win-win by JagsFraz71 (Fri 4th Jun 2021 11:38am)
  • We just took the door frame out and made the bathroom bigger. Put the sink in the space and a bigger bath in the other bit by JagsFraz71 (Sun 6th Jun 2021 10:39am)
  • Not really sue rooftop in Glasgow is the same as rooftop in London, New York or wherever. Whenever someone sends me a pic from the Raddison all I see is a lot of car parks and the hydro. The ‘rooftop’ bar in the Ubiquitous Chip is pretty cool - just a wee area on a cobbled street in an old building. Glasgow does the old style Victorian pubs better than modern one’s imo by JagsFraz71 (Wed 9th Jun 2021 10:23am)
  • I would imagine the streets will be pretty empty for the Scotland games the further out from the town you are. The rest is result dependant really - if we beat England to go through to the knockout stages for the first time ever then yes, I would imagine there would be a bit of chaos. by JagsFraz71 (Wed 9th Jun 2021 12:15pm)
  • Red Raw at the stand - Think it’s a Tuesday? 5 min slots and a mix of newcomers and established acts ( I saw Frankie Boyle practising his Royal Variety thing that ended getting binned at Red Raw). Always packed as well as its cheap tickets by JagsFraz71 (Wed 9th Jun 2021 1:38pm)
  • Depends what you’re after - I’d branch out from the City Centre whatever you do. West End, Merchant City and South Side have a lot of the more interesting stuff. You’ll get some class Indian food in Glasgow, although i’m not sure how much farting chutney for days fits in to your romantic weekend plans - Chakoo/ Mother India/ Balbirs are really good. Paesano is a bit of an institution as well - meant to be the best pizza in the UK or something. Stravaigan does some good traditional haggis and stuff if thats your scene by JagsFraz71 (Wed 9th Jun 2021 2:34pm)
  • If its a conservation area it depends on if its visible from the street. My flat needs new sash windows at the front but can do whatever we want at he back as you can’t see from the road by JagsFraz71 (Sat 19th Jun 2021 11:28am)
  • Presume charring cross is KMPG, Morgan Stanley etc? Wouldn’t live around there - nothing wrong with it just not the best you can afford. Would look at Finnieston, Yorkhill and North Kelvinside. • Depending on the state of the place at the moment remember you might need to replaster/ fix the underfloor amongst other extra stuff. Reg’s around electrics change a lot also so likely you’ll need to move and sockets/switches to outside the room if they’re in there. Get out to Hillington (shudder) and buy your own Bathroom Suite instead of letting a reno company provide if for you for a pointless markup. Wholesale Domestic where alright - cheap, it looks alright and functional by JagsFraz71 (Tue 20th Jul 2021 10:32pm)

  • If you can then fork out for a block of private lessons. I used to coach competitive swimmers and also worked teaching everyone from toddlers to those with physical disabilities and beginner adults. Genuinely, the adults were bu far the worst. Lots of people are so embarrassed to be there (they shouldn’t be) that they turn it in to a strange sideshow where everything is all about how funny it is to be there. Nobody learns how to swim that way.. by JagsFraz71 (Sun 25th Jul 2021 11:12pm)
  • Whats your budget? There’ll likely be a place somewhere you can afford with more going for it than Govan. If you’re renting then Govan improving in 5 years time has no real tangible benefit to you. It’s not the worst place in the world but as you’ll be able to tell from there replies nobody is telling you it’s a great place to live by JagsFraz71 (Mon 26th Jul 2021 1:54pm)

  • My advice for whats its worth.. Was looking for a place for 6 months. Numerous offers getting nowhere near etc Found a place that’d been on the market for a few months and offered below home report. Ended up being haggled up to Home Report but that meant we had the cash we would have needed to offer over to fix it up. Couple months of builders and stress but now have a place I could never have afforded in the state it’s in now. Weirdly, if you find a place where you think the Home Report is ‘too high’ then that can free up cash for you to do renovations as you can mortgage the whole value. If you buy well then you should still make money if you ever sell with the Equity you’ll have in the place and the added value that a smart reno will add by JagsFraz71 (Fri 30th Jul 2021 4:55pm)
  • Also worth noting that if you live in a conservation area you might need planning permission for the small chimney thing. Got a letter through the door telling me a neighbour was doing this a few months ago. Bizarre by JagsFraz71 (Sat 31st Jul 2021 5:49pm)
  • China town usually give you the ‘white menu’ if you go in without some sort of Chinese representation at the table! (Ex GF was Chinese and this happened a few times when I went in first to meet her there) So politely ask for the more authentic one - or point at other tables. As a rule, if they’ve given you prawn crackers then you’re in trouble Ask for Tea - you should always have tea on the table and keep the person older than you’s tea topped up Don’t let them give you plates - Most authentic Chinese places will give Westerners plates instead of bows so they can use knifes and forks. With a bowl you can add a little rice to your bowl then use chopsticks to take small pieces of whatever you want. More like Tapas. Tapas - Order some seafood (scallops are great there), some vegetables (choi sum oyster sauce and garlic is great) and some meat dishes (as mentioned proper Char Sui is food of the gods). Put these in the middle of the table and everyone digs in using chopsticks to add the food to your own small bowl of rice Dim Sum - There are many many dumplings you’ll never have hear of. This is more of a lunch - you’ll get a platter of dumplings and tea etc. Cantonese its called ‘Yum Cha’ which literally means ‘drink tea’ There’s some other really good Chinese places around Glasgow now also. Mainly Cantonese but also some Taiwanese influence with the Hot Pot creeping in. Same same near St George Cross, Loon Fung and Asia Gourmet are all also very good for Cantonese stuff by JagsFraz71 (Mon 2nd Aug 2021 9:27am)
  • Theres a place in Patrick just called Banh Mi. By far the closes Banh Minto Vietnam I’ve had in Glasgow. Even the pork is cut in to long strips like you’d usually see over there - good iced Vietnamese coffee also by JagsFraz71 (Mon 2nd Aug 2021 9:36am)
  • Cantonese food is overwhelmingly seafood based so yes you’ll be sorted. Get one of the whole fish and pick it apart with some lobster/scallops etc Can’t go wrong by JagsFraz71 (Mon 2nd Aug 2021 10:31am)

  • Could be a class opportunity actually. You can get grants to renovate a close to attract a factor from the council. Possibly add value to your home. Factors are a shower but i’m glad I have one to mediate on any issues with neighbours. If you don’t include buildings insurance and each get that yourself it’ll be a lot cheaper. Currently pay 37 quid a month to the factor - basically covers cleaning and being an intermediary for repairs etc by JagsFraz71 (Thu 5th Aug 2021 11:20am)
  • Banana Leaf on Old Dumbarton road is brilliant. Proper Tamil Nadu food… I’m not talking about the Malaysian Banana leaf that has branches on Byers Rd and Cambridge St. This is a wee south Indian place thats been there for years. Curry, rice, pakora and a chapatti for 11 quid AND its BYOB for free. You also get to sit on plastic garden furniture which adds to the ‘i’m on holiday’ vibe. by JagsFraz71 (Thu 5th Aug 2021 4:29pm)

  • Thistle support is a strange beast. A large part are Maryhill born and bred support your local team guys. Then you have the west end stereotype / Bearsden and Jordanhill Middle Class guys. Students will come and go - you notice it it you’re unfortunate enough to be a third generation season ticket holder (thanks Dad). Around the west end and the uni a lot of people will say they’re Thistle fans to avoid conflict or appear more Bohemian. If these people actually went to games we’d sell out every week.. Having said that though Thistle are still well supported in Scottish terms. Away from home in particular we carry multiple thousand fans for big games. by JagsFraz71 (Tue 10th Aug 2021 12:46pm)

  • Inn Deep is the Williams Brothers pub. Drygate is an offshoot of Tennents but does some good ‘craft’ beer Grunting Growler is a bottle shop that also does sit in pints. Usually have some great stuff but pretty expensive. Dukes along from the Growler usually has some good stuff. Not a craft beer but The Belle has Anchor Steam on tap, which I’ve never seen anywhere else. Shilling has a huge choice of all sorts and probs the best city centre wise. Never been to BAAD at the Barras but also heard it’s got a decent lineup. Will update if i think of anywhere else obvious - most bars in the west end will have some craft representation these days. by JagsFraz71 (Thu 12th Aug 2021 1:02pm)

  • Sorry, didn’t explain that very well. If you’re aged 16-30 you can get 30% off yourself. If not you can get a ‘Two Together’ railcard that means you have to be travelling with the other person - but you both get 30% off. by JagsFraz71 (Mon 23rd Aug 2021 1:45pm)
  • The bus is cheaper but the train is way less stressful and more comfortable. Depends where in Edinburgh you’re working also? by JagsFraz71 (Mon 23rd Aug 2021 1:55pm)
  • Yeah, but if you travel daily it’s usually cheaper to use the railcard over a monthly ticket. You also avoid paying for days where you don’t need to travel - holidays, sickness, WFH etc by JagsFraz71 (Mon 23rd Aug 2021 2:03pm)
  • It doesn’t apply to the Edinburgh - Glasgow route thankfully. The rule is pre 10am if the trip is less than 20 quid or something so by virtue of the train being a massive bump you can use it on the service. It’s a bit of a loophole - my old work had a decent contingent from Glasgow and everyone ended up ditching the monthly tickets and using the railcard instead as it worked out cheaper. by JagsFraz71 (Mon 23rd Aug 2021 2:51pm)

As mentioned, Jacques is part of Brel, which was bought out by a company from original owners 6/7 years ago. It’s a bit of a theme park for people going to the Hydro now tbh. by JagsFraz71 (Wed 1st Sep 2021 9:03am)

  • Glasgow is having a bit of a crisis of self confidence at the moment. The City Centre has been hit by multiple fires in recent years and then was used to accommodate Homeless people /Asylum Seekers during lockdown(s). End result is that its currently readjusting to having people working there while the previous occupants are still around causing issues. Nothing wrong with a walk round during the day (still plenty of good things to do, eat and see). I agree re staying in the West End - anyone saying you need to be some sort of millionaire to afford a flat there is pushing it a bit. The area on GW road stretches for miles but is probably most affordable towards St Georges Cross. You could also try the smaller hotels in Finneston on the other side of the park. Some great Airbnb’s in traditional Tenements in West End too. West End is a big area with tons of subdivisions and has tons of great places to eat drink and some great walks and green spaces. Worth spending some time in and exploring. You should never have to walk under underpasses etc back to West End/ City Centre. You can get Subway, Bus or Train depending on where you are. There’s also numerous other ways to walk back avoiding those bits around the motorway at Cowcaddens. by JagsFraz71 (Mon 4th Oct 2021 9:49am)

  • So from Wilton St you have tons of options. My favourite boozers nearby are; Great Western Road - The Belle - great winter pub with fire and decent beers Inn Deep - Craft beer pub beside the river located inside an arch under the bridge Hug and Pint - Cool wee hipster pub with good food Ashton Lane; Ubiquitous Chip - Roof terrace is a great place for a drink and does decent cocktails Brel - Belgian beer and Mussles with decent outdoor bit Jinty’s - not sure if reopened but a class irish bar Converted Churches; There’s 3 huge barss in converted churches in the west end. Best known is Oran Mor - worth a swatch in the main bar just for the novelty factor. Websters and Cottiers same idea around same area. Finnieston/ Yorkhill Finnieston is ‘trendy’ but a bit hit and miss. The 78 is v hipster and fully vegan, looks like someones bedroom. Kelvingrove Cafe - Upmarket and Parisian bistro vibe The Park Bar/ Islay Inn / Ben Nevis - You should 100% check these out. Highland pubs with great chat and whisky selections. Best pub in Glasgow is Dukes n Yorkhill imo. Brilliant beer, cocktails and hidden out the way. In terms of a pub crawl thats basically a big walkable circle round the middle of the west end. I did most of it yesterday..sore heed. by JagsFraz71 (Mon 25th Oct 2021 3:49pm)

  • Tbh, if you need to move out that bad then you’ll work the extra hours. Entry level in call centre is awful - i did it for years until I realised I needed to use it to get out of it. If that makes sense. Get smashed in to it for 6 months full time - take the hit and then try and move on to a middle office role with less of the bad stuff. There are plenty of temp middle office jobs in Glasgow right now. by JagsFraz71 (Tue 2nd Nov 2021 11:16am)

  • Member of the Arlington. Got in last year when they had no waiting list and were waiving the membership fee. It’s 84 quid a month for couples membership. As someone else said, the sauna/steam room are OK but nothing to write home about. The turkish suite (2 hot rooms) is one of the coolest (lol) places I’ve been in Glasgow. Proper Victorian splendour. The pool is pretty good outside peak times but can be a bit of an over 80’s aquatic royal rumble at others. Best thing about the whole place is them laundering your swimming gear and providing towels, so you just leave a set of goggles or whatever in there and you can show up at any time with no gear. I think you can get a free day pass if you say you’ll be joining. by JagsFraz71 (Tue 9th Nov 2021 11:02am)
  • Subway surfing a must. No hand on railing or leaning on anything the whole way round the circle. Becomes interesting after the 4th or 5th pub… by JagsFraz71 (Wed 10th Nov 2021 1:25pm)
  • Dockyard/ Nico/ Bovine def good shouts, disagree with the Asian food rec’s, though. Hanoi Bike Shop is some of the worst ‘Vietnamese’ food in the city. People seem to think the whole place should reek of fish sauce. It really shouldn’t… Everything is bland and sweet, more reminiscent of Thai food. Non Viet is a lot better but best Vietnamese I’ve found in Glasgow is Little Hoi An in the southside. Worth a bash if you haven’t tried already. Ashoka is a chain restaurant with the food cooked off site and reheated in the restaurant. It’s definitely OK for an easy curry but Glasgow has some of the best Indian places anywhere. Try Balbirs, Mother India, Dakhin etc by JagsFraz71 (Fri 12th Nov 2021 10:29am)
  • Yeah, it was a faff getting a table. Worth it though - Never sure what it is but Pho/ Japanese Ramen always tastes different in Europe compared to over there. Was the closest I’ve tasted to the stuff you’d get on the street in Hanoi (or Hoi An) by JagsFraz71 (Fri 12th Nov 2021 11:54am)

  • Plenty of Older Folk in the Park Bar. It’ll have live ceilidh music on and people dancing but she wouldn’t be out of place age wise, a really mixed crowd. by JagsFraz71 (Sun 28th Nov 2021 5:24pm)
  • LW Sash and Case windows just did our second floor windows. They look class and double glazing has made a massive difference. If you’re in a conservation area bare in mind you technically cant put new UPVC windows in. by JagsFraz71 (Sun 28th Nov 2021 5:33pm)
  • I’ve been looking for this info also. In my close a few people use open fires and a few more have burners. I think In Glasgow you’re meant to use smokeless fuel in a burner but plenty of people still use open fires also, technically illegally. As mentioned, get the flue lined - got quoted 800 quid for ours. At that point you can either risk the open fire or buy a burner.. by JagsFraz71 (Sun 28th Nov 2021 5:31pm)
  • I did it for 2 years and swore i’d never do it again but just started another job in Edinburgh a few weeks ago. The express train is the best way to do it, they used to be every 15 mins but are now every half an hour. Which is a massive pain in the arse tbh. As others have said, get a railcard if you can. I’m too old now unfortunately. From North Kelvinside I can leave the house at 7:20 and be at my desk in Cannonmills (25 min walk from Waverly) at just past 9. Including subway its 30 quid a day. Don’t bother with cross country, it’s impossible. Unreliable and inconvenient. The bus takes ages. Driving is soul destroying - getting to Edinburgh is fine but then getting to the office in rush hour took the same amount of time. by JagsFraz71 (Sat 4th Dec 2021 9:16am)

First up, its great that you’re making the effort - hopefully max 6 weeks down the line you’ll be as competent as anyone else walking down the street. I’d recommend getting 1-1 lessons. With the best of intentions lots if group sessions descend in to a bit of farce. • The flip side of this is not enforcing that group environments are nothing to worry about could make the situation worse. • I posted a thread a year ago re fitting windows on second floor. I found a company who would do wooden sash double glazed in a conservation area on second floor without scaffolding. Was 1350 odd a window i think. Really chuffed with them - look great and noise/heat situation is massively better. Give me a shout if interested and i’ll pass over company name - don’t want to be posting anything that could get them in trouble for dodging the ridiculous scaffolding costs. by JagsFraz71 (Wed 2nd Feb 2022 10:35am)

  • Middle of nowhere really. The science park is a pretty transient place with people coming and going for work/sport etc. Kessington has a few shops/takeaways but no pubs, cafes or places to eat etc. Maryhill is a bit further down the road. As much as it’s improved I wouldn’t describe it as a great place for a casual pint or going out. You can walk/cycle down the kelvin walkway in summer to the west end which is pretty nice - best avoided on winter nights as its unlit. You’ll be reliant on the bus if you dont drive.. Yeah, its fine but nothing really to write home about. by JagsFraz71 (Wed 16th Feb 2022 5:54pm)

The express train takes 42 mins or something and some of the long trains are more like 1 hour 40. Express train is also far nicer. by JagsFraz71 (Wed 2nd Mar 2022 2:11pm)
  • People always talk about taxi drivers like its some sort of public service but you get some absolute cretins driving the things about. • Currently I do two days in the office and 3 at home but in the past i did every day. Honestly doing it every day is pretty rotten so would only recommend it if you have a plan to get out. Money wise the bus is cheapest, driving is horrible and saves you zero time but train is by far the most comfortable. You can get cheaper train tickets using a railcard if you’re eligible - you can use it at any time on the Gla-Ed train online other lines. It’s almost 28 quid return without a railcard and 18 odds with it. by JagsFraz71 (Sat 12th Mar 2022 6:08pm)

Arranged overdrafts I mean - call the bank and they can see if you’re eligible. • Using a CC for purchases is fine but anything else is a very bad idea. Compound interest on cash advances regardless of 0% offers and likely unable to pay bills that are regarded as lending (Council Tax, Phone Bills) Overdraft allows you to pay your bills. by JagsFraz71 (Tue 15th Mar 2022 10:37am)

  • Eh, it was over ten years ago but from what I remember it was 6 months. Side effects were just mega dryness (Hair, lips, eyes, skin) which never really went fully back to usual. It can have mental side effects also I think so requires a lot of attention. On balance though, my acne was horrific (think cysts physically closing my eye’s) and this got rid of it, in the main. Early 30’s now and get the occasional spot and maybe an annual belter. Small price to pay for some dryness imo by JagsFraz71 (Wed 23rd Mar 2022 8:11am)

Making presumptions here but if you’re in a block of families and you have a converted 2 bed with 3 bedrooms and partners/friends staying then you’ll likely piss people off. There’s thousands of HMO’s around Anniesland/West End. by JagsFraz71 (Tue 29th Mar 2022 11:54am)
  • A quality HMO? They don’t really exist tbh. If you had a quality place you probably wouldn’t go through the HMO faff of fire doors and noticeboards etc to get more rent from people. Some are better than others though, clearly. Check the usual suspects and filter for HMO’s.. Rightmove, Gumtree, S1 etc by JagsFraz71 (Tue 29th Mar 2022 3:46pm)

  • Don’t get it. A century of sectarian shite, which is still an absolute stain on large parts of the west coast, boiled down in to a voyeuristic afternoon in the pub for a casual day tripper. If you support another Scottish team then it’s even more weird to actively want to be involved in that shite, imo. by JagsFraz71 (Sun 3rd Apr 2022 10:02am)

  • Some great advice on here. The double roundabout beside Victoria Park was on all of my multiple attempts before I passed. Familiarise yourself with the exits involved and where/when to give way. If you’re in wrong lane for the exit for a roundabout then go round the roundabout and take the relevant exit at second time of asking. Be careful of stop signs around the area and the bit up at Jordanhill with no road markings. You still need to be giving way in certain circumstances without the visual aid of the white paint. Good luck. by JagsFraz71 (Mon 4th Apr 2022 6:45pm)

If you want to offer 170k you’d need another 10k on top of your deposit because the bank wont lend more than the HR value. by JagsFraz71 (Wed 13th Apr 2022 6:37pm)

  • The AIP just tells you what kind of range of houses you can look at, nothing particular to your transaction. So disregard the 150k figure other than the fact thats your affordable range. If HP is 150k and you want to pay 160k then you’ll pay your deposit of 7.5k and end up with a mortgage of 142.5k. If you want to offer 160k you need the 7.5k deposit to get the mortgage and another 10k to offer over. Then probably another 3/4k minimum to pay for solicitors and the move.. by JagsFraz71 (Wed 13th Apr 2022 6:57pm)

  • Express is every 30 mins now. You’re usually better just waiting for that one (Via Falkirk High) than going on a tour of the central belt on the other ones. by JagsFraz71 (Sun 24th Apr 2022 11:41pm)
  • Hanoi Bike shop is pretty far from the mark in terms of authentic Vietnamese food. It also stinks of fish sauce, which it really shouldn’t? Try Little Hoi An, Non Viet or Banh Mi and Tea - blow the bike shop out of the water. by JagsFraz71 (Fri 29th Apr 2022 10:21am)
  • As mentioned already, get the express train (Via Falkirk High) from Glasgow Queen St High level. Its every 30 mins at either quarter past or quarter too the hour. The express trains and far nicer than the other one’s which take an age and stop everywhere. Also re sunset - in July that could be 10-11PM so you have plenty of time. by JagsFraz71 (Fri 29th Apr 2022 10:25am)

  • Inn Deep is the Williams Brothers brewery pub and has a good selection of IPA’s, Sours etc on tap. More of a hipster place than an old man real ale pub though (not a dig, big fan of an old man pub). by JagsFraz71 (Tue 3rd May 2022 11:26pm)
  • Nothing wrong with going to train with an 11’s side to check out the level. Some teams have lots of sides 4ths/5ths teams so may be room to develop a new player. It is competitive though. I can’t think of any truly “social” 11’s teams. by JagsFraz71 (Mon 9th May 2022 9:21am)
  • Glasgow winters can be relentless and depressing but tbh in 3 months of Autumn leading up to xmas you’ll be fine. You’re not here for the January perma hangover featuring no Money, no sunlight and newly acquired steak pie handles. The pay off we get is the nights staying light until basically midnight later on in the year - it’s a shame you’ll miss that bit! by JagsFraz71 (Mon 9th May 2022 11:40am)
  • Usually ten mins before doors if you eant a seT out of the firing line. If you’re not arsed about being part of the act then you’ll be ok 15-30 mins after doors. After that you’re standing. by JagsFraz71 (Tue 10th May 2022 12:34pm)

  • What? I commute on the 7:45am Glasgow-Edinburgh and usually get on the train at about 7:42. About 75% of the time I’d get a table if I wanted (prefer non table away from people working and eating their breakfast). Are you getting the long train or the express Via Falkirk high? by JagsFraz71 (Fri 13th May 2022 9:19am)

So shite during peace time but good during war time was my assessment. by JagsFraz71 (Wed 18th May 2022 2:20pm)
  • Yeah, I got the fine too but as you say they paid it and I never heard anything else about it. They also had a knack of misspelling my partners name on everything, which wasn’t ideal! Woman with name beginning with M was the solicitor I dealt with - not sure if that’s who you’re referring to. She gave the seller an absolute mauling after he tried to delay closing for the third time. Basically had the guy running out his house (he had already messed us about a fair bit). So we appreciated that in the end and where glad she was in our corner. But, aye - Mixed Bag fair to say by JagsFraz71 (Wed 18th May 2022 2:39pm)
  • They’re all fine but the more expensive the closer to the uni (and pubs, cafe’s etc) they are. Firhill isn’t in the best of areas but is very close to nicer places (Glasgow is weird like that) by JagsFraz71 (Thu 19th May 2022 9:49am)
  • Non Viet and Little Hoi An are brilliant. Vietnamese food is generally good for being sans gluten (rice noodles etc). Dakhin good for Indian and dough balls in Finnieston does a decent GF pizza by JagsFraz71 (Thu 19th May 2022 9:44am)
  • Actually surprisingly few Indians in Glasgow/Scotland (only 33k) Big Pakistani/Bangladeshi communities, though. The route in to JP Morgan/ Morgan Stanley from India happens quite often - the work culture is what you make of it. If you want to apply Indian values to the workplace you’ll likely work longer hours than others. 60K is a good salary in Glasgow. Is that AVP/VP level? by JagsFraz71 (Thu 19th May 2022 11:54am)
  • India has what, 6 times the population of Pakistan but there’s almost there’s 25k Pakistanis in Glasgow vs 33k Indians in the whole of Scotland. Double the population of Pakistani’s overall compared to Indians. I think lots of people assume that South Asians are “Indian” - not in a racist way. Not helped by the fact that many businesses purporting to be “Indian” are actually Bangladeshi, Pakistani or Nepalese. 90% of Indian restaurants in the UK are [run by Bangladeshi’s](https://www.theguardian.com/world/2021/mar/21/from-kala-bhuna-to-shatkora-curry-lets-all-get-a-taste-for-bangladesh). Probably relevant to point out to the OP. • Glasgow Live don’t break stories - they just parrot other outlets content and/or post links to Rightmove. Do you have two independently verifiable sources to the context? Is it in the public interest for a news outlet to cover the story? If it is then contact the Herald/ The National/ Scotsman etc. by JagsFraz71 (Mon 23rd May 2022 10:09am)
  • OK - let’s do it this way. Nice Pubs? - 0. Munns is a crack den, Star and Garter only vaguely acceptable on match days and the Woodie really isn’t in Firhill. Things to do? - There’s Ruchill park - which for all it’s better than it was is still pretty grim. And the scene of a lot of serious crime (well documented murders etc). What else? Clay pits? It’s hardly kicking off unless I’m missing something. Area itself - Much better than it was (You likely won’t remember) but still noticeably a bridge between nice bits of Glasgow and Possil/Possilpark. Shops - Bunch of Newsagents and many offlicences? It’s main redeeming feature is that it’s near other things. GW road, City Centre etc. I’m glad you’re proud of where you live - that can only be a good thing BUT let’s not let that get in the way of the fact 99% of people would live in other area’s in Glasgow around Firhill if they had the chance to. by JagsFraz71 (Mon 23rd May 2022 11:45am)

  • Glasgow airport used to be properly heaving with flights during the summer pretty much the whole time. Pubs all rammed and multiple flights taking off around the same time. It’s pretty an absolute shell of where it was now - I reckon a lot of it is just down to a lack of flights from Ryanair/Easy Jet etc. there was a point maybe ten years ago where you could fly pretty much anywhere you’d want to go for a city break/beach holiday direct from Glasgow. by JagsFraz71 (Fri 29th Jul 2022 3:41pm)

  • Think about budget and what you want from uni overall. I wouldn’t be travelling the Atlantic to live in most towns around Glasgow - they’re fine, and I’m from one of them, but honestly there’s not a lot going on most of the time which would have a huge impact on your ability to easily access the good things about living in Glasgow (gigs, comedy, pubs, clubs, food etc etc). Try area’s around Dennistoun, the South Side (Shawlands, Pollockshaws etc) Anniesland, Scotstoun, North Kelvinside, bits of Ruchill, Firhill etc by JagsFraz71 (Sat 13th Aug 2022 8:50pm)

  • Not that you’re interested in factoids during your wee “look at me I’m controversial” icebreaker here but there’s actually surprising few Indians in Scotland, let along Glasgow. But you can only do that a couple times then you just have to attend - my old job did it 3 times I think then I ended up having to go anyway when the 4th one landed on the doorstep. Try liftshare but you need to find someone who’s destination is near yours or you’ll end up just commuting again in Edinburgh. I don’t rate the bus, it takes ages. • Agreed - I do contract work so my salary varies massively. The last year I’ve been on more than I could have imagined (double previous salary) but all I’ve done is sort my life out (double glazed crap windows in the flat, replaced old stuff, leased a cheap car etc). I’m at the end of that contract now and looking at returning to normal salaries and tbh I can categorically say that the money made me no more “happy” than I was before. All i’m looking for now is a middle ground where I’m comfortably off, not bored at work and I can have a work/ life balance that allows me to do things I actually enjoy. High cash means constant high pressure and tbh I’d rather have a more modest life than a heart attack at 55. by JagsFraz71 (Mon 10th Oct 2022 1:51pm)

  • You dont need planning permission as long as its the same character as the originals. So wooden sash and case. I did this last year, give me a shout if you need any info. by JagsFraz71 (Tue 1st Nov 2022 5:25pm)
  • No worries. I shat it and just paid for new wooden ones but plenty of people get away with “fake” wooden sash windows that look the part and are actually upvc. Also, if you have shitey old case windows already then it’s usually way cheaper to get them refurbished. They can usually add slimline double glazing as well. Apparently that’s actually better as the “old growth” wood they used back then is way stronger and durable. I hate that I know this much about windows.. zzzz by JagsFraz71 (Tue 1st Nov 2022 5:34pm)

  • Had a similar shitshow last year, started getting Migraines just after I’d started a new job and really needed to see a GP ASAP to get a prescription. Ended up just having to pay to see a private GP, which was shite but meant i actually got the tabs within a day. Was about 60 quid, i think. by JagsFraz71 (Mon 21st Nov 2022 10:17am)
  • It was [here](https://www.gpmatters.com/). Looks like it’s 80 now (i’m pretty sure it was 60 last year). I got propananol for migraines which helped a lot - they also do botox injections and stuff for migraines in there if that’s what you’re after. by JagsFraz71 (Mon 21st Nov 2022 11:57am)
  • In case you’re not aware, once you have the private prescription you can just get it on repeat from your local GP on the NHS. by JagsFraz71 (Mon 21st Nov 2022 12:01pm)
  • This isn’t true. In a conservation area you just need to match the character of the original windows or someone could complain. You dont need approval (I did this in my flat last year). If these are sash and case windows you could get then refurbished and slim line double glazing added. If they’re twist and turn you’ll need to get bespoke sash windows made, It was about 1500 per window when I did mine last year. by JagsFraz71 (Tue 22nd Nov 2022 9:48am)
  • If you call window installers or the window advice brokers, you’ll get a different answer. The system is reactive, if nobody complains then nothing happens. If you’ve put sash and case windows in and someone complains then there’s no complaint to be heard. It’s all a bit arbitrary but nobody applies for planning permission for windows (look at all the UPVC windows in conservation areas). by JagsFraz71 (Tue 22nd Nov 2022 11:07am)
  • I would think it’s mainly because you don’t need planning. Unless you want to make the process more difficult and expensive than it has to be, of course. by JagsFraz71 (Tue 22nd Nov 2022 12:39pm)
  • Yeah, it’s wood or nothing. Although tons of people seem to get away with the UPVC sash windows that look like wood. I was more meaning that if you were doing the right thing with the windows you don’t need planning permission first. by JagsFraz71 (Tue 22nd Nov 2022 1:09pm)
  • Like I said above - the real world application of the rules is retrospective. So the vast majority of people don’t apply for planning permission. There is no penalty for not applying for planning permission if the windows are compliant. So theres no benefit or need to apply. Thats just how it works it practice. If you’d like to apply for planning permission then knock yourself out. by JagsFraz71 (Tue 22nd Nov 2022 1:31pm)

  • Where are you moving from? Easterhouse isn’t great. by JagsFraz71 (Fri 9th Dec 2022 3:28pm)
  • Ah, I’ve been to Harlow and have family in Basildon. Easterhouse is a “new” estate but with some of the similar problems you’ll be aware of in a New Town. Lack of shops, things to do, connectivity etc etc. Honestly, I’d say that if i had the choice I’d rather live in Basildon than Easterhouse, though. At least you have access to a Wimpy that way… I’m not being negative for the sake of it, you should go look around first. It’s better than it was in the 90’s but in the 90’s it was legitimately horrible (think smashed windows, nothing to do, crime etc). by JagsFraz71 (Fri 9th Dec 2022 4:29pm)
  • I’m sitting about with a cracking TMJ tension headache after some ill advised festive wine so..haha. Chiro was a false dawn tbh, tried everything else since. • If you need to drive then make sure you avoid any cobbled streets. I spun 360 going round a corner in the west end a few years ago on black ice (was going at easy less than 5mph) and smacked the kerb 3 times before it stopped on a building site. Scary stuff. by JagsFraz71 (Sat 17th Dec 2022 12:46pm)
  • You were in town and decided to eat food at Times Square? Was it a dare? by JagsFraz71 (Sun 18th Dec 2022 7:26pm)
  • Agree with 99% of this but there are exceptions if you’re not daft enough to get taken in by all the mad promises. You can get acupuncture prescribed on the NHS for migraines and chronic pain. Its not going to cure anything but it does temporarily make your symptoms more manageable - if thats the goal then it’s the same ballpark as getting a massage for aching muscles etc. by JagsFraz71 (Fri 23rd Dec 2022 10:52am)

Left it outside the flat about 20 mins before the guy was due to arrive as was going out..in that time frame someone managed to steal 6 sheets of knackered plasterboard from outside the house. • Had rats in a tenement flat I used to live in outwith Glasgow. This isn’t really a hope filled post but don’t waste time on any of the plug in deterrents or anything. They’re just a gimmick. The only way you’re getting rid of them is to cut off the food source, which is probably wherever you keep your bins. by JagsFraz71 (Tue 17th Jan 2023 2:02pm)

Other than that it’s fine, although you’re much closer to Maryhill than you are the west end proper. • This whole concept is kind of mind blowing to me. Shopping around for a new set of beliefs to base your beliefs and understanding of life and death around. I can imagine faith is a really strong anchor when things get tough, so I’m not dismissing your search but I cant get past the fact that all of these religious offerings are essentially man-made interpretations of something that may or may not have happened thousands of years ago. As far as I’m aware no religions say “oh aye and those guys are alright too”. You’re basically saying that the one you chose is right and all the others are wrong. The odds of that being correct must be astronomical. by JagsFraz71 (Wed 1st Feb 2023 3:52pm)

  • It’s horrendous for everyone. Driving around Glasgow is an absolute nightmare with Deliveroo guys filtering in and out of every blindspot you can imagine while you’re trying to negotiate mental drivers and people walking out on to the road. Roadworks everywhere at the moment have made it even harder. Car’s, bikes and people should be separated. If that means pedestrianising more area’s then it’s a win-win. by JagsFraz71 (Thu 9th Feb 2023 7:52pm)
  • The standard of cycling in Glasgow is horrendous. Just because you can do something doesn’t make it a good idea. Filtering approaching a busy junction where there are multiple lanes and people blinded by busses/ HGV’s to save a few seconds before the next set of lights is absolutely mental. Just own the middle of the lane and then filter when the traffic stops if you need to. by JagsFraz71 (Thu 9th Feb 2023 7:58pm)

Knock on impact is huge as well, staying late an hour in the office becomes a colossal pain in the arse. If its a necessity then yeah you can do it but it’s far from ideal in my experience. by JagsFraz71 (Thu 23rd Feb 2023 12:33pm)

  • Long story but BT tried to get me to pay hundreds of quid for BT Sports after sky had said they couldn’t actually install sky in my flat. Just called multiple times until I got someone who wasn’t a bellend and they cancelled it free of charge. Make sure you’re recording complaints with them and set a deadline at which point you’ll complain to Ofcom. The providers have to pay Ofcom for any complaint sent their way so it’s rarely in their interests to actually play that one out. by JagsFraz71 (Mon 13th Mar 2023 11:44am)

If it’s the back of the place and you can’t see it from the road you can get away with anything (as in they legally dont need to be sash). • Glasgows a bigger place than Bristol. The metro area is around 1.7M people. It feels more like a “big” city like London in miniature. Different area’s give you different things. Culture wise it’s hard to argue with..4 uni’s, pubs, restaurants, theatres, music venues and festivals and always one of the tour dates on a bands UK/ World tour. Experience depends where you live and what you can afford. If you’re looking at the west end, bits of the south side or Dennistoun etc then it’s a great place to relocate to. Although we have a rental market issue at the moment it’s still far more affordable than Bristol or other area’s around the South of England. Downsides - weather can be grim and it gets dark really early in the winter. Like 3:30PM. • Bit of context on the botox as I also have TMJ. It can work but also is a v expensive short term fix. About 350 quid every couple months. You can get it on the NHS but its taken me nearly ten years to get to that point with them. Depending on where you get it it’ll also effect the shape of your face temporarily. Berkeley clinic (private dentist) do it if you’re going ahead with it. Have you tried physio / massages? Honestly after cycling through every option available the best things you can do are the boring things e.g. cutting out caffeine, less booze, sleep in a supported position and loosen the joint before it starts to flare (physio, massages etc etc). by JagsFraz71 (Sun 3rd Sep 2023 11:14am)

I’ve worked for 8 or 9 financial institutions over the years and always found anything away from Retail / Commercial banking at a UK based bank/ fund manager is going to have a more relaxed culture and fundamentally better environments than one of the big international players by JagsFraz71 (Mon 18th Sep 2023 2:26pm)

  • When you buy heavier stuff you can usually pick either kerbside or to the door delivery. It can be a bit more expensive but just get it to the door of the flat. Tradesman absolutely hate getting asked to carry shit that should be in situ already, I learned that the hard way. So if the plumber is coming to install the washing machine then make sure it’s where it needs to be before they arrive. Sofa’s etc sometimes come in two pieces without the feet and they install them when they get in. Also, make sure you’re in when this stuff gets delivered or someone will take one look at the stairs and leave it at bottom. Measure the close to make sure the sofa etc will fit and just make it clear that it fits when they arrive. by JagsFraz71 (Mon 2nd Oct 2023 5:07pm)

  • The optics of this are fairly awful at the moment. Surely just stop the war on both sides makes more sense? Palestinians are an oppressed people but they’re also currently raping and pillaging their way through towns and villages. If the Ukranians were doing the same in Russia i’m not convinced we’d have wee guys in hemp backpacks standing on the buchanan street steps in “solidarity”. by JagsFraz71 (Mon 9th Oct 2023 10:23am)
  • I don’t think you impact anything by standing on the buchanan street steps with a Palestine flag either tbh. Clearly Israel is accountable for decades of human rights abuses but “solidarity” with more human rights abuses on the other side is a difficult position to be in. It’s all just a little silly that a bunch of people from Giffnock think they have the moral high ground to an extent they stand in solidarity with Hamas, who are funded by Iran and are currently committing mass murder. by JagsFraz71 (Mon 9th Oct 2023 10:55am)
  • Reddit is where nuance comes to die. by JagsFraz71 (Mon 9th Oct 2023 11:17am)
  • People offering opinions tends to be how discussions work. No need to get butt-hurt about someone holding a valid viewpoint. Maybe direct some of the saviour complex to aid agencies who’ll be actually doing something to support Palestinians who didn’t vote for Hamas and are stuck in the middle of this, instead of being so convinced that apparent support for a group of people who are currently committing war crimes is morally justifiable. by JagsFraz71 (Mon 9th Oct 2023 11:14am)
  • Israel declared war yesterday? by JagsFraz71 (Mon 9th Oct 2023 11:26am)
  • Cool, we’ll see what the crowd is like from the pictures later I presume and we can check in on the demographic. Of course stability in the middle east matters, we’re (UK) largely responsible for the entire situation. Israel has committed war crimes for years and broken international law. Palestine is now committing war crimes and breaking international law in response. “Solidarity with Palestine” suggests that the people doing this are somehow the good guys in all this. In reality, even if a two state solution was implemented, Hamas running a nation state would be diabolical for global security and likely another Iran situation. It’s clearly not a black and white scenario and presenting it as such so wee try hards can get on a bandwagon is embarrassing. by JagsFraz71 (Mon 9th Oct 2023 11:25am)

  • Are verifiable facts a matter of opinion? The perpetrators of the attack have done enough to dehumanise themselves in the last few days. The widespread reporting of atrocities, including rape, have illustrated that to a wider audience. Again, I think it’s a bizarre hill to die on.. “Yeah they might have killed all these people but we don’t know for sure how many were raped until the coroner gets involved”. Really? by JagsFraz71 (Mon 9th Oct 2023 3:06pm)
  • So.. the reports of rape and other pretty horrible things aren’t evidence that this is bad already? Healthy scepticism makes sense but I cant help but feel like you’re missing the point. by JagsFraz71 (Mon 9th Oct 2023 3:11pm)
  • You know you this isn’t football or something, right? You can think Israel is the bad guy and also think the Palestinians who committed these acts are evil. Elements of both are completely fucking abhorrent. If the Palestinians (Hamas) were concerned about being dehumanised by the media there wouldn’t be videos of them abducting and killing people. Pick your battles ffs. by JagsFraz71 (Mon 9th Oct 2023 3:25pm)
  • Ah, so i’m an apologist for Israel now? Like I said, you don’t need to pick a team to have an opinion on a 1000 year old conflict based on religion. But you can call out evil acts when you see them. Your certainty of the moral justification for mass murder from the comfort of your life 1000 miles away says a lot about your own morality, rather than that of the Israelis or Palestinians. by JagsFraz71 (Mon 9th Oct 2023 3:34pm)
  • No, i didn’t. I said you could think Israel is the bad guy but the Palestinians who committed these acts are evil. They’re not mutually exclusive? Just to be clear, you’ve been to Palestine and are 100% sure that the killing, rape and abduction of 1000 people was justified? by JagsFraz71 (Mon 9th Oct 2023 3:40pm)
  • I think it’s self evident that the choice of words was intended to draw a distinction between the overall parties to the conflict (Israel, Palestine) and the acts of Hamas, rather than the Palestinians at large. The same Hamas, a group of self decreed Islamic fundamentalists, who are aligned with Iran and preach antisemitism regularly. I would say they’re pretty evil, regardless of justification. People who think a two state solution would ever work with Hamas around are deluded. It would be a disaster for the ME and world security. Basically just another Iran funding similar terrorist organisations. Israel is run by a similar bunch of idiots who seem to believe that Zionism gives them a right to oppress another native people. They’re both fucking stupid. None of that changes the fact that what’s happening now in Israel is abhorrent. What Israel do to Palestine will be abhorrent too. There’s no good guy here. by JagsFraz71 (Mon 9th Oct 2023 3:53pm)
  • Again, you don’t have to label an opinion or join a team. Try a bit of rational thought instead. Insinuating that only middle class people don’t do that is again, quite divisive and patently untrue. If something isn’t black and white you don’t just pick the least worst option if they’re both shite options. Tbh unless you prescribe to either religion or culture, you’re probably going to disagree with lots of things on both sides. by JagsFraz71 (Mon 9th Oct 2023 4:02pm)

Do Kelvingrove museum then grab lunch at Mother India Cafe. Back on the bus, get aff where you started and train to Ed. Or something.
