  • I swear to fuck, something has gone deeply wrong if this cunt isn't chased out of the city centre any time he's spotted roaming about there. Honestly, let's just agree to find him and follow him around counter-harassing the shit out him. Please. by imtriing (Thu 10th Jan 2019 10:43am)

  • As far as I'm aware, him and the mouth breathing cretins that he hangs around with have been barred from a number of clubs in town for harassing and groping women.. so.. by imtriing (Fri 11th Jan 2019 12:39am)
  • He states quite openly that to him, the opinions of the women he's hitting on "don't matter". He's scum - end of. If you see him in town, it is your moral duty to pelt him with insults and disrupt his bullshit so thoroughly that he fucks so far off he never comes back. Literally, drive this fuck out of our city and away for good. by imtriing (Fri 11th Jan 2019 12:42am)

  • 23yo man caught, likely being charged with 7 counts of aggravated robbery and 1 of aggravated assault/maybe extending to GBH dependent on the severity of the injuries of the hospitalised man.. each robbery charge carries a potential maximum sentence of what, 6 years? Most likely that'll get dropped to about 18 months x 7 = 10.5 years, and then maybe another 4.5 for the assault.. maybe 15 years for the contents of a few peoples pockets is a fucking dumb way to waste your 20s. Good riddance. by imtriing (Wed 16th Jan 2019 12:01pm)

  • Hang on.. so they're going to take services that were, presumably, founded by taxpayer money and move them into a privately owned entity and then take loans against those publicly funded services in order to cover the costs of their oversight? Sure seems like a good way to privatise some assets. Who's going to be the owner of the "arms-length" business that inherits a bunch of gyms and galleries? Once the mortgage is paid off, do they then return to being purely council owned? Feels like someone is getting screwed here. by imtriing (Thu 17th Jan 2019 5:20pm)

By all means, apply to the same Housing Association in the same area, and make clear that you're friends and it would be ideal to be as close together as possible, but don't tie your applications together because it could become needlessly complicated and slow things down. • Bearsden Academy has, for years, churned out some amount of fucking weirdshots. No idea *why*, but it just seems to be part of it. There was the guy who was 30 or so, who pretended to be 17 and came back to do his Highers. There was Mr. Ashby, the maths teacher, who shagged a 6th year student on the 6th year Prom night. There was Mr. McCormack, who diddled some girls in the back of his maths class. There was an IT/Computer Studies teacher who had some kind of weird skype thing going on with a 14yo boy. That murderer cunt who chopped up that poor girl he snatched from Sanctuary. Mr Lindsay, the PE teacher, had some kind of affair with a student.. Now this fucking flabby roaster? The list actually goes on, but these are the ones that spring immediately to mind for me - is this normal? Do other schools have this same issue? by imtriing (Thu 31st Jan 2019 11:12am)

  • There's no chance any parole board will ever release him to be reintegrated into society, not after those reports. He could reform in prison, he could spend years and years trying to alter his character - and I believe he *will*; but not out of a feeling of remorse. Moreso out of a feel of self-preservation and a desire to be free - because he clearly has no guilt over what he's done. Saying he was "satisfied" with the murder is just abhorrent, and phenomenally disgusting. Any parole board that sees what he's said about his crime, his trial and his feelings about it will immediately shut down any effort he makes to see the light of day again. He is one of those cases where throwing away the key would be the best course of action. by imtriing (Thu 21st Mar 2019 2:22pm)

  • I think you need to clarify what you mean here, because you've said you've inherited money and have a budget of around £50-70,000.. Is that the liquid cash assets you've got knocking around? Or is that the upper limit value you can work to? The best advice I can give you is to speak to a Mortgage Advisor. I know a very good one, if you'd like his contact details then PM me and I can put you in touch with him. The process in Scotland, having just been through it myself, is about as so.. Initially, you contact a mortgage advisor. They will send you some kind of "data capture" form where you fill in your details - age, occupation, employer, income, deposit amount etc etc. Then, using that information, your advisor will start shopping around all the providers to find you the best deal available from all the people willing to lend to you. After this part, you will receive a Mortgage Agreement In Principle. This is effectively something you *need* to be able to start putting in offers on property - it's effectively a 6 month agreement of terms with the mortgage broker that says "We will lend you up to £XXXXXX at an interest rate of Y%" - but that agreement lasts for 6 months before you'd need to re-submit for it. So, with your agreement in principle you can start seriously looking at property you want to buy and putting in offers. In Scotland, sellers are required to provide a Home Report. The Home Report is an inspection carried out by an independent surveyors company, who then produce a document at the end that details lots of different aspects of the building. It's important to read all the information - typically, things get graded by 1, 2 or 3. 1 is in good condition, 2 is okay condition but will need attention soon-ihs and 3 is in need of attention. They will detail the condition of the windows, whether they're double glazed etc, the boiler, the walls, the paint, the doors... basically everything. But, the really important part comes towards the end - the "Home Report Value". Once they've gone through the whole property, taking into consideration the area, the aspect and the condition, they give it a final Home Report valuation figure. This is important for you to know, because in Scotland any mortgage lender will not give you *more* than the Home Report value.. You might be eligible to borrow up to £200,000.. but if you buy a house valued at £120,000 that's all they'll give you... and if you buy that house valued at £120,000 for £130,000.. well, you need to drum up that additional £10,000 by yourself. They will not include it in your mortgage. At the moment, Nationwide are still accepting a lot of mortgages with a 5% deposit. This probably won't last much longer, but if you *can* put down a bigger % of the overall cost of the property in the first instance then it's strongly recommended. A larger % of the mortgage for a deposit will result in lower interest rates and thus, less of a payment per month to pay off the principle. If you are interested in advice or more information, feel free to PM me - as I said before, it would be super helpful to know whether you *have* £50-70,000 you want to invest into a property or whether that is the upper limits of what you think you would be able to get a mortgage for.. by imtriing (Thu 4th Apr 2019 6:18pm)
  • It's a bit of a fiddly thing, because it's anecdotal dependent upon area and desirability of the property itself. Basically, if you want a house and it's Home Report says it's valued at £150,000 - you'll need £15,000 to get yourself to a 10% deposit. You've got your agreement in principle and you go see the property and decide you like it. In Scotland, we do blind bidding. What that means is that basically.. we don't let people play financial tennis until someone has to give up because they can't afford to go any higher making offer upon offer and playing people off against one another. You get one shot to make an offer, you just have to go with your best and hope that anyone else that makes an offer makes one lower than yours. So you decide you want to put an offer on this flat, it's Home Reported at £150,000.. But you suspect that there may be a few others interested.. So you call your solicitor and tell them to put in an offer of £155,000.. And after some deliberation, the sellers decide that your offer is the best and accept it. Now you'll need to send £20,000 to the mortgage company to account for the 10% deposit and £5,000 you went over the Home Report in order to upkeep your end of the agreement in principle. And once that's done, you'll get given a date however long down the line on a Friday where you'll go and pick up the keys! Hope this helped somehow? by imtriing (Thu 4th Apr 2019 8:27pm)
  • Also just to add, in case.. the "offers over" price doesn't often coincide with the Home Report Valuation! by imtriing (Thu 4th Apr 2019 8:36pm)
  • You are not entirely out of options, it just depends where you'd like to live and how much work you'd like to do to the property once you get it! I'd recommend, if you have £50-70k, checking out the [Future Property Auctions](http://www.futurepropertyauctions.co.uk/) - there are frequently properties in and around Glasgow going for between that price range in various states of disrepair that you could easily fix up, if that's the route you opted to go down. Then, you'd also be mortgage free and simply own a piece of property that would be worth more than you paid for it by virtue of the fact that you made it inhabitable again! Just a thought. If you opt to not go for property, yet still have this chunk of money you've inherited, I'd really recommend heading over to /r/personalfinance and asking them for their advice on how best to secure it in an Index Fund or something similar where it will grow exponentially over the next ten years or so. You likely wouldn't have access to it, not without paying a fee to free it up from the Index Fund at least, but it would get a much better Interest Rate % in there than it would just sitting in a regular account, or even a HISA (High Interest Savings Account). It would also be worth your while, if property *is* what you want to put your money into, going to your bank and inquiring about the Help to Buy scheme that the Government encourages these days. I believe you have to open a special account and then deposit up to £6,000 over 6 months - which, when you go to use to put a deposit down on a house, the Government will match - giving you a £12,000 deposit. I'm unsure about all that, though, as I didn't go down that route myself - but it's certainly worth asking about. Best of luck! Take care of that money, it can work extremely well for you - don't squander it away, you'd regret it. by imtriing (Fri 5th Apr 2019 10:23am)

  • If you plan on taking the offer, I'd really recommend having a look around for somewhere to live that *isn't* in a "student flat" type situation. They're extremely expensive for what you get, often poorly maintained and just... Well, not very Glaswegian, if immersing yourself in Scottish culture is something you feel you'd also like to get out of your time here. Check on Gumtree.com for rentals, perhaps find something short term for when you arrive - or stay at a hostel - while you find a flatshare with other students in a nice tenement somewhere or something? It will work out MUCH cheaper for you that way, most likely! Best of luck, and if you do choose to come here I hope you have a great time! by imtriing (Mon 15th Apr 2019 12:00pm)
  • There is a really great Hostel on Park Terrace in the West End. You can see Glasgow Uni from up there, it's super close. It might be worth your while to find out whether you can stay there for a couple of weeks while you find yourself a flatshare here once you arrive? It's walking distance to literally everything you'd be coming here for! by imtriing (Mon 15th Apr 2019 4:32pm)

  • Use your democratic right to vote for whomever on the ballot espouses the views most closely aligned with your own. That's the whole point, isn't it? I'm aware that it's a hard choice for a lot of the wrong reasons, but by making no choice you allow the people with the worst views to control the narrative. by imtriing (Mon 29th Apr 2019 6:42pm)
  • x-posting my comment from the r/scotland thread on this article if anyone is in any way interested. Drug reform in this country needs to be sweeping and drastic. All the way down to how we educate people about drugs. Legalise everything, tax it and drive out the black market. Allow cannabis to be grown legally for personal use, and allow licenses to be acquired for the sale of cannabis in coffee shops similar to the Amsterdam model. Do not allow more than 2 permits per business, do not allow monopolies to form. Keep Richard Branson the fuck out. Allow pharmacies to prescribe the harder drugs with a doctor's prescription, on the understanding that the aim of the treatment and free access to the drugs is only as a method of weaning people off and getting them on the road to rehabilitation. Obviously this is something you have to be careful of, clearly needs more thinking so as to not breed a class of drug dependent people being taken care of by the state - but with the correct framework in place to ensure people dont fall through the cracks as they are currently, I am sure we would see an improvement. Fund and found needle exchanges in every major Scottish city where users can access clean kit, any support services they might need and ultimately the gateway to rehabilitation. Start treating drug abuse as a mental health issue and train mental health & addiction specialists to run rehabilitation units in every major city in Scotland. Focus drug education in schools on harm reduction as opposed to "drugs will kill you", treat the youth like humans capable of making decisions for themselves but arm them with the facts instead of fear-mongered bullshit. The tax money gained through the legal growth, sale and purchase of cannabis would provide more than enough capital to make all of those things absolutely plausible. All leftover tax revenue goes towards schools, the NHS and building a sustainable grid of renewable energy sources owned and operated by the Government, provided to the citizens of Scotland at a massively subsidized rate. You create jobs, you defeat the black market for drugs, you increase rehabilitation which likely lowers the rates of petty crime the country over (theft, burglary, etc) and create an industry that could fill the void in the areas of the North of Scotland that have slowly fallen by the wayside. But nobody will ever agree to that so why the fuck am I wasting my time writing all this shit out. by imtriing (Thu 2nd May 2019 5:20pm)
  • I'm pretty sure iCafe on Woodlands Rd do that? They may also still have a unit on Sauchiehall St but I've not been down that way in a while so can't say got sure. by imtriing (Thu 2nd May 2019 8:52pm)

  • This is an astute post, thank you. I think the term abuse should be defined by whether or not it is having a detrimental affect on the individuals ability to meet their needs and the needs of any dependents they may have. I think alcohol is a huge problem; particularly binge-drinking - but, if binge-drinking isn't damaging the lives of those who participate in that lifestyle in a way where they cannot go to work, earn money, pay their bills etc.. then I fall on the side of thinking that's their choice. When it becomes endemic within the individuals life, when it is debilitating and causing them sever disruption to their ability to live a "normal" life, then that's when specialists should be made available. I think "abuse" is when the pursuit of the chemical thrill outweighs the pursuit of a stable existence; and as such it falls into a currently ignored section of mental health awareness that we need to expand drastically. by imtriing (Fri 3rd May 2019 11:35am)
  • Yes, this is a fascinating piece of research. David Nutt, one of the researchers involved in the making of that image, is a very prominent voice in the UK landscape of drug research and policy reform. Just yesterday [he published an article challenging medical professionals in the UK to embrace medical cannabis](https://twitter.com/ProfDavidNutt/status/1123839760819281921?ref_src=twsrc%5Egoogle%7Ctwcamp%5Eserp%7Ctwgr%5Etweet). by imtriing (Fri 3rd May 2019 3:31pm)

  • Which Uni are you going to be attending? It will help to know what kind of areas are actually going to be best for you to be looking so as to make your commute easier - however, Glasgow is a relatively small city with average public transport services so you would manage where-ever you landed. As people say, your timing isn't going to make life easy for you - however, you have the benefit of being slightly older (I imagine, as you say you're doing a masters) and wanting to live alone rather than cohabiting. That puts you into a smaller subset of the student rental market, as most students are either looking for some kind of group accommodation. by imtriing (Tue 9th Jul 2019 3:40pm)

  • This has been going on for years. He's owned that building for.. fuck knows, but it's been like that since I can ever remember and I started dossing around town about 20 years ago. So, even if he's not owned it all that time, he bought it knowing the state it was in - it's not like it came a surprise to him. He's just trying to milk GCC and Heritage Scotland because it's "A Listed", but his demands are effectively tantamount to blackmail because he's holding the threat of the building becoming condemned over their heads as though it will be *their* fault if it happens. • I'm unsure if that's really his end-game, tbh. His end-game is probably more along the lines of stymieing progress as long as possible, allowing the building to fall into irreparable ruin and then collecting an insurance payout when the Council condemns the building and orders it be demolished. It's worth noting, just a couple of weeks ago [Glasgow City Council *demanded* that he carry out repairs to the building or face enforcement action](https://www.thetimes.co.uk/article/sands-shift-for-owner-of-egyptian-halls-in-glasgow-zblkfj2vb) so it's definitely a bit suspicious to me that now, what... 10 days later, there's a "woe is me" article being pushed into the public domain by a different news source. by imtriing (Fri 19th Jul 2019 12:49pm)

  • I'll go through point by point... 1. I've never heard of that happening with renting, my experience has always been if they're asking for £750pcm or whatever, that's what you'll be paying if they select you as the new tenant. I'd avoid any company that's getting you to "put in an offer", because that suggests to me they're trying to get over the odds and I'd wonder about whether they'd be informing the landlords of that increased income or whether it just lines company coffers. If it's the former, which.. let's be honest, in a letting agency.. would not surprise me, then it stands to reason to believe they'd likely pull other immoral tricks along the way. Red flag. 2. It can be, but if you just keep persevering something will align comfortably. But, with no secured fixed income, you will definitely be a less enticing prospect because there will be the worry that you will fail to pay the rent and then the process of evicting you is quite lengthy and irritating. Landlords will always want to avoid this, if they can. 3. Brag away my man, what harm can it do? 4. Govanhill, like anywhere in Glasgow, has it's good and bad spots and I'm sure you'd most likely be fine if you've got a head about you. Being in the West End does not preclude you from stumbling across the occasional nutter. 5. Agencies are a bit of a mixed bag. Clyde Property are decent, but have an annoying policy of inspecting their properties every 2 months which can be a bit of a hassle if you're like me and don't like strangers poking about your home when you're not there. The process of renting through them was also super lengthy and required a lot of paperwork and personal information, as well as a pretty hefty background credit check etc. But, dealing with the agency themselves? They were always polite, always reacted to any problems we had promptly, didn't try to rip us off, never raised the rent.. overall, for an agency, they were alright. I cannot speak to the integrity of any of the others, but I'd recommend doing some digging about them as you come across them and seeing what other people have to say of their experiences. Gumtree has lots of private lets, there's also a shopfront on Byres Rd near Bar Soba (I think?) that has a pretty active window where people list flats for rent. 6. Typically, they'll try and get you to take a 6 month lease, after which point the contract enters a rolling month-to-month situation where you can give 4 weeks notice at any time to vacate. That is perfectly legal. 7. 25-33% of your earnings is difficult to say, because I don't know what your earnings are. However, in Glasgow, to live alone, that seems reasonable to me. Be prepared to spend a little more if you see somewhere you think is ideal. 8. Single Person Discount on Council Tax, last I investigated, was simply a 25% reduction in the cost of the Band for the year. I think Band B is about £1400 per year, so you'd save £350 of that and be charged £1050. This *could* be outdated information, it is worth mentioning - but if you call the Council they'll be able to give you the details no problem. Applying for the discount is easy, too. 9. Last time I rented, we had to provide a bunch of bank statements etc as well - it's just proof of income and solvency, essentially. Don't feel weird about it. If you're ever planning on buying a place, you'll need to provide about 2 years worth of bank statements, amongst many other personal details, so it's pretty standard fare. 10. Check windows, water and heating - check the boiler, ask the agent if they know when it was installed/how old it is. Check the boiler pressure, just as a mental note.. Pay attention to bathrooms, especially if they're internal and do not have a window to the outside world. Look for fresh paint, or the smell of fresh paint - it could be that they're just covering up a damp problem to get the place rented out, rather than actually dealing with it. Ask about the neighbouring flats - are they rented or owner occupied? Are they housing association or private lets? 11. Electric heating is inefficient and expensive to run, but not a complete disaster. Better bet is to invest in a really decent, real wool blanket and get into the habit of just wrapping yourself up in it instead of blasting heating. Much more cost efficient and better for the planet, too. Hope this all helps in some way or another, any other questions just feel free to fire them over. by imtriing (Fri 26th Jul 2019 11:35am)
  • Just thought of another point regarding your self employed status - if it seems like it could be causing a problem, you could see whether you can secure a guarantor and whether that would alleviate any landlords worries about letting to you. A guarantor is basically someone who would also sign a part of the lease that says they'd take responsibility if you fail to pay the rent.. might be tough to find someone willing to do that for you, but figured it worth mentioning anyway. by imtriing (Fri 26th Jul 2019 11:51am)
  • Oh wow, when did that change? I last rented about 3 and a half years ago and we were immediately looped into a 6 month lease and then went rolling month to month thereafter. Apologies for the misinfo, I'll edit my comment to reflect. by imtriing (Fri 26th Jul 2019 12:55pm)

It's not a GHA block, we're factored by another solicitors and I've already called them to sort of have the entire thing "on record" somewhere, but I don't honestly think they'll do anything - boy on the phone sounded more bemused than anything.. Good call re: recording my interactions with her - I'll do that. My fear is that I am obviously the target of her disdain - she clearly thinks me and my partner are up to something in our flat, hence the insinuation that we are "glue sniffers", and that she may fabricate reasons to send the police to my door. A different lawyer will push the "bUt ShE's A mOtHeR!!1!" angle harder? I just fail to see how this can possibly be nuanced enough to justify an appeal. She stole money from charities. She got caught. She should face the punishment. by imtriing (Fri 27th Sep 2019 9:02am)
  • Of course, but I guess the point I'm making is that her appeal is clesrly disingenuous and her smear of her previous lawyers is quite unjustifiable. The facts were presented and she was prosecuted on them, her lawyers defended her as best they could but.. really, what defense is she expecting? A different lawyer isn't going to be able to change the bottom line of her charges, she was still caught embezzling money from charities. When they tried to force him onto a boat in Port Glasgow he escaped and ran away to Edinburgh where he was eventually captured - but he died in jail there before he could be sentenced. Whether or not this ties in to these streets being renamed I have no idea - but I would expect the likelihood to be high that it has *something* to do with "cleansing" our rather sordid history of enslavement, as that area is full of extremely fancy townhouses that belonged to the "old rich" who controlled Glasgows port trades back in the day - all of which benefited from slavery. by imtriing (Fri 4th Oct 2019 11:25am)

  • They're clearly in full scale meltdown. Firstly, they don't charge nearly enough for a wedding video to be legitimate and have their insurance sorted out. If they had Professional Indemnity insurance, the couple could sue them for the entire cost of restaging their wedding day in order to have a correct video. However, I highly doubt these boys have that. I'd also doubt there's an iron clad contract between them and their client - which makes things tricky. If there isn't, then at best the couple will only be able to get a refund by taking proof of their payment and going through small claims court.. but, they still don't have a wedding video so how do they account for the emotional trauma of having hired someone so incompetent they couldn't retain even 1 scrap of footage from your day? It's really tough, but take it as a warning - if you're getting married and the videographer isn't charging you close to £2k for the work, then.. Well, Monkey Box Films hits the nail on the head with their name... pay peanuts, get monkeys. The £2k a legitimate wedding videographer will charge you covers costs of both Public Liability and Professional Indemnity insurance - usually to the tune of £10mil each. So if they fuck up and injure a wedding guest, the liability insurance pays out. If they fuck up and melt all the cards with your footage on before they manage to back them up, the indemnity insurance will pay out for you to redo the entire wedding. Atop that, the rest covers their equipment insurance, their time and skill, their computer hours and storage of the media after the wedding, editing, delivery of what was originally agreed upon.. so, with Monkey Box Films starting their wedding videos at £450.. should really tell you something. What will probably end up happening here is that this boy will just nuke his entire website and brand and start again with a different name to avoid the controversy. He doesn't have the money to refund them, he sure as fuck doesn't have the money to redo their entire wedding and if he can't keep track of his footage safely then he *absolutely* should not be in that industry. Recipe for continued disaster. by imtriing (Wed 16th Oct 2019 8:41am)
  • Still don't have their wedding video though, do they? I think I can tell you what they'd prefer.. by imtriing (Wed 16th Oct 2019 1:04pm)
  • Easily - GCC cut bin collections, refuse piles up and becomes very attractive to vermin like rats - all those old sandstone tenements are falling apart, they've been there for over 100 years and some have had little to no maintenance.. So the holes in the walls just connect to all the other buildings, turning the internal guts of the buildings into a huge warren of tunnels and hidey holes and ways in and out of various flats on the hunt for food. They're also super destructive, so if they want through somewhere they'll just gnaw a hole through the wall... Therefore, getting rid of them isn't easy. You'd have to put poison in basically every hole you could find and then seal it up, everywhere, and hope that the rats eat the poison before they eat your repairs to the holes... Then all the tenants would have to put up with the smell of dead, decaying rats for months until they dried out so much there wasn't a smell any more. Alternatively, they could just get a group of feral cats. But that's hardly a solution, is it? It's criminal negligence that these private housing associations haven't adequately maintained the buildings in their stead, and I'd assume that the occupiers would be in a good position to sue as a group for the diminishing quality of their lives due to the ineffectiveness of the private housing associations to protect them and the buildings they live in. by imtriing (Thu 17th Oct 2019 12:15pm)

  • Aw man, fuck sake. Don't stress - if the cards are blocked and the locks are changed, the rest is relatively immaterial. Someone can surely get you some cash for your holiday and then you can sort them out on your return once you've got your new cards. No problems; only solutions. Take a deep breath and enjoy your trip! by imtriing (Thu 17th Oct 2019 3:44pm)
  • It depends what the goal is tbh, fumigation likely wouldn't work as it would just result in the mass migration of all the rats from the building - they'd flee before any gas could kill them all and just end up infesting somewhere else or coming back once it was safe again. Bulldozing is a bit of an extreme measure - but realistically.. I reckon they'd need to strip the buildings back to the bare bones and completely renovate them inside, ensuring that all manner of rat-proofing was done as they were being refurbished to destroy the maze they've created in the walls. That, in addition to traps, poisons, sonic deterrents and hopefully a few homeowners having some alley cat friends would probably see the majority of the problem sorted out - but then it becomes about upkeep.. And that's trickier. People in Glasgow are clatty bastards - my back court is a fucking disaster zone because people don't seem to be able to use a bin properly and we had a horrific fruit fly infestation over the warm summer as a result - completely avoidable if people used bins sensibly, but apparently that's asking too much. I'm surprised we didn't get rats - but there are a bunch of cats in my quadrant of tenements so maybe they're doing a good job of keeping the larger varmints at bay. Chances are that you'd do all that work and people would still leave waste lying around that attracts rats and you'd find yourself sliding back towards square one as those deterrents you set up slowly become eroded away. It needs the housing associations to step up their game and take proper care of the buildings they are the custodians of - but that costs money, and private housing associations - unlike council run housing associations - are businesses who's bosses expect profits. And bonuses too, probably. So they'd rather let buildings crumble and tenants live in rat infested hellholes because at the end of the day.. The money is still coming in, and they get to keep more of it. by imtriing (Thu 17th Oct 2019 3:42pm)

  • I couldn't agree more. I lived in London for a bit and it was fucking hellish. 18 months of abject poverty, miserable commute and no social life whatsoever. I'll never forget the week I moved home and read an article that ranked UK cities for their quality of life - London was way higher up the list than Glasgow and I found the entire thing laughable because I had found myself in a nicer, more comfortable, bigger flat for the same amount of money I was paying for a dingy, mouldy room in a house full of psychopaths in London, had much more expendable income because I could walk to and from work and wasn't treated like an alien by the people around me for not being English. Glasgow is an excellent city, and quality of life assessments are total fucking whack because they seemingly take absolutely no consideration for income level and cost of living. by imtriing (Fri 18th Oct 2019 2:18pm)
  • I mean.. your experience may vary from mine! I was simply highlighting the tremendous gulf in actual quality of life based upon income between the 2 cities. £30k/year here is absolutely fine, you'd have a nice flat, more than enough expendable income to do with as you please, plenty of opportunity on your doorstep and probably enough money leftover to build a small cushion of savings. In London, however, that same salary would see you in a small room in a houseshare with mental people probably around an hour commute from your work, which costs a fair whack on an Oyster every month, water is a separate bill whereas in Glasgow it's included in Council Tax, food is more expensive, going out is almost prohibitively expensive, you can say bye byeee to the possibility of saving or going on holiday and you'll be so fucked from your commute and work that on your days off.. You won't *want* to do anything, and even if you did they're your only chance to do your washing and take care of basic life admin shit so they just end up passing you by.. The xenophobia thing.. I mean, obviously I'm biased because I'm from Glasgow - but I've found Glasgow a more accepting place than I observed London to be, but I suppose it really depends where you live and who you associate with. What I would say is.. definitely don't move to London in the hopes that it will improve your social life. It's such an exhausting city to survive in that it'll obliterate most any desire you have to attempt to make friends. At least in Glasgow, if you rent a flatshare, you can probably scrape by on 24-30hours a week of work at a job a 10 minute walk from home instead of having to hammer down 50 hours a week at a job that costs you an additional 10 hours a week to get to and from just to make ends meet. by imtriing (Fri 18th Oct 2019 3:48pm)

  • My advice would be.. if you and your friend are both okay, save being a little a shook up - you need to move past it. Cameras got nothing, Police won't do anything, guy vanished. Shite situation but it happens all the time - I got weak punched in the jaw by a jakey on a bus once and after I stood up he ran away - bus driver saw everything, cameras saw everything - nothing happened and nothing ever came of it. The way I view it is this.. if that's the way this guy behaves, his comeuppance is awaiting him in his future. One day, he'll start shit with the wrong person and they'll knock his fucking teeth in. It's almost inevitable. I'd suggest if you see him.. take a wide berth. You could call the police, but the chances are slim they'd do anything about it. No sense provoking a fight, you're more likely to end up in trouble yourself then. It's shite, I know - but it's the best advice I feel anyone could give. by imtriing (Mon 4th Nov 2019 10:48am)
  • Trust me man - I understand. After that incident on the bus, I replayed the event again and again wishing I'd just stood up and fucking clocked the cunt in the jaw. It's infuriating, and humiliating, because you feel like you want some form of justice but are completely impotent to achieve it. What you're feeling is perfectly normal. It's also best to let it pass, else it can become bitter and poison you from the inside out. Take it easy, and know that somewhere out there that guy is on a collision course with a *really* bad time - self inflicted by his own poison. by imtriing (Mon 4th Nov 2019 11:51am)

  • You more than likely won't get one on a shop about here. Only place I can think of off the top of my head that *might* have one is the wee shop on Parnie St down in Trongate - opposite the pet shop on the corner near the Saltmarket. Not sure if it's still even there, but there used to be a "head shop" or whatever the fuck it's actually referred to as down there that sold grinders and skins and cones and bongs and the like. If not, I got mine off VapeFiend.co.uk and it had 20% off (this was actually just the other day so it may still be active) and I got another 10% by using the code "420" at checkout. It got delivered the next day and cost me just over £40 all told. by imtriing (Mon 4th Nov 2019 1:54pm)
  • Ah shit, hmm.. then I think online will be the way you'll have to go. I've got a DynaVap M 2019 and prior to that I had a Shadow M but I'm giving that to a mate of mine who I want to stop smoking tobacco! I love that wee thing man, it's amazing. I also have an Arizer Air 2 that I probably use more frequently but they're both pretty different. The Air 2 is far less intense, slow building and you can just kind of toot away for a wee bit on the same chamber before you need to refresh it - the DynaVap is a kinda one and done deal, but the one hit it does deliver will fucking melt your face off and you'll be stoned for hours off it. I've heard it's really nice if put through a bubbler/water pipe of some kind - but to be honest, just straight I've never found it to be harsh or unpleasant in any way so I've never bothered looking further into it! You definitely won't be disappointed, though - it's stealthy, its a really pleasant object, it's quick and easy and consumes an incredibly small amount of bud for the stone it gives you *and* when you empty it, if you store all the bud that comes back out of it in a nicely sealed jar you can use it to make butter which you can then bake into edibles! Haha shit sorry, I'm all for dry herb vapes so when I get going it can be hard for me to stop. by imtriing (Mon 4th Nov 2019 2:24pm)
  • Oh shit, as a P.S - If you do go for it, I'd recommend jumping onto eBay and buying a couple of "Prof" lighters. Butane jet lighter will discolour the vape less and heat it up quicker. by imtriing (Mon 4th Nov 2019 2:29pm)

  • Nice one! Hmm.. smell, I'm not sure tbh? It definitely smells, but not in the same clingy way a joint does - should dissipate within a half hour at most, I'd guess? Sorry I can't be more accurate, it's not something I've had to take into consideration prior to your question! Safest bet if you're concerned.. get yourself into TKMaxx on Sauchiehall St and over to the left when you go in there's a massive shelf full of scented candles. You'll find some nice ones there around £3.99 that aren't like.. sickly? I don't know how to explain it but sometimes scented candles can just be overwhelming - but in there you'll find some that aren't bad, actually quite nice.. when you vape, light the candle. Blow it out 5 mins after you're done and I'd bet you'd find your problem solved. Burning 5 mins at a time as well, 1 candle will last ages! Single Jet will be dandy, I'd suggest not pointing it directly at the end of the tip - there are a few good technique videos out there, I hear up the lower part of the cap and just spin it round and round until I get the click, then do a little tiny bit longer before inhalation. Also.. don't do what I did and forget that the end *will* still be extremely hot after you've inhaled... yep. by imtriing (Mon 4th Nov 2019 3:28pm)
  • The click is definitely a weird thing, but in person when you hear it, it's pretty unmistakable. I'm not sure what the actual mechanism is that causes the click, but I imagine it must be to do with a piece of metal expanding due to the heat and the click would probably be more accurately described as a pop because you sort of "feel" it happen, too. Don't stress, you'll get the hang of it right quick. Enjoy! by imtriing (Mon 4th Nov 2019 3:35pm)

  • Glasgow is a city with a huge student population. As such, there's a bit of a crush for rental housing in the areas surrounding the Universities - particularly the West End - and what's available tends to get snapped up quickly. The resultant phenomena is one of pure unfettered Capitalistic greed, whereby landlords realising that they have a healthy market of people all vying for the same properties in the same areas all smash their prices up through the roof in an effort to get an extra point on their rental yield percentile. I remember not too long ago renting a 1 bed flat in Finnieston for £450/pcm. Only 6 or 7 years ago. That same flat nowadays is probably £750/pcm, and I would be genuinely surprised if it were less. So, to sum up - Glasgow has higher deposits and bloated rental prices because the city has been turned into a landlords wet dream and they're pounding that shit hard and raw. You're welcome. by imtriing (Thu 13th Feb 2020 12:43pm)
  • Very good. If you look at any landlord forums online, you will notice this odd juxtaposition where they view any and all tenants as undesirable for any number of seemingly vapid reasons but still rely upon them for their income. They hate tenants, but they need them to uphold the standard of living they've become accustomed to whereby they get to sit on their arses doing fuck all and garnish the wages of another for the basic human requirement of having access to shelter. Let me be clear - landlords are parasitic leeches feeding on the energy and life of the poor, the vulnerable and the incapable. They are fucking vampires, and *any* complaint they could make about their situation couldn't elicit one iota of sympathy from me - because they are lazy, despicable vermin who will never be satisfied. If you seriously think tenants are the worse party in the awful power dynamic that the property rental market encourages, you really are ignorant and I implore you to read some books. by imtriing (Thu 13th Feb 2020 1:47pm)
  • Partick will be cheapest in terms of both rent, and rates. Typically around Partick you'll be in Council Tax band B or C - if you're really, really lucky you might be one of the few outliers that is still band A. Woodlands and Finnieston is all Band D and E which gets pretty pricey - I think Band E works out around £170/month or thereabouts. Looking at the average rental in Partick, there's a lot of 1 bed flats around there that typically let between £6-700/month. Chuck your bills and council tax and all the rest of top of that and I reckon you'd be looking at between £8-900 a month on the cheapest possible end of the spectrum, but that's for living alone in a wee flat to yourself. If you look to flatshare you could potentially bring that down if you looked for rooms in big 4 person flats up in Woodlands but they will probably be in spurious condition at best and the entire area is riddled with mice. by imtriing (Thu 13th Feb 2020 6:43pm)
  • Ever considered finding a new hobby? I don't mean to sound facetious, but I'm just saying - it would really suck to jack things in for an apprenticeship opportunity only to realise that it's not what you expected/you hate it and wish you could go back - which isn't always that easy. Perhaps a more vocational hobby like woodworking or something like that would scratch whatever this itch you're experiencing is. There's a place somewhere on the South Side that's like.. a community workshop? Lots of woodworking equipment, lots of old boys who essentially run the place and will spend time teaching you whatever you might want to learn, and you pay for the materials you use.. Alternatively, the Glasgow School of Art or City of Glasgow College have some really interesting night classes/part time courses that you could continue to work around the schedule of that might introduce you to other vocational possibilities. From there, if you discovered a real passion for something you'd experienced in a less formal setting, you would be better equipped and informed to make a clear headed and well considered decision about the more drastic changes you might want to make in your life. Apologies if this was overstepping a boundary or potentially presumptuous of your thinking and situation. I've had a lot of moments where I've felt cornered and slightly underwhelmed by the way my professional life has meandered, and spent a lot of time daydreaming about how it could be different. However, my realisation was that I just needed a more vocational hobby that would allow me to produce something I could be proud of. Videogames are great, but they're ultimately unproductive and you don't have any lasting artefacts of the work you put in. Woodworking however.. you could make a piece of furniture or a trinket box or something that lasts for years, decades even. And when I have that unsettled, restless anxious feeling I either look at some of the things I've made and inspect them and consider how I could do them better or cleaner etc, or I pick up some of my tools and tinker away at something new for a bit - and always feel better after. This became more of an answer than I think I'd intended to give, but hopefully it helps in some way. Take care. by imtriing (Thu 20th Feb 2020 11:57am)

  • I disagree - they created a market by pushing through right to buy. Right to buy allowed the council to create homeowners out of its council housing tenants, and generate a nice windfall with it.. But the caveat was that then those same council's were not allowed to build any replacement council housing stock. Thus, they *created* a market where there is a demand - but let's be clear, this isn't a demand for *rental* housing, it's a demand for the basic human right of *shelter*.. and they exploit that for their financial gain. You will never change my mind about this - landlords are parasitic financial vampires. What's worse is that they prey upon the financially vulnerable, the "essential" workers on minimum wage, the single parents, the disabled - everyone who we are meant, as a society, to be doing everything in our power to help - to lift out of poverty, in many cases. But nah, keep defending a landlords right to expropriate a chunk of *actual* workers wages every month. by imtriing (Thu 2nd Apr 2020 3:42pm)

In this screen, I've managed to run terminal and use it to copy the entire contents of my boot SSD onto an external drive and boot into it on my MacBook, but I can't seem to install any of the Nvidia web drivers I'm told I will need for the 980ti to work. It says they're incompatible with the version of MacOS I'm using, but I'm using the exact ones I reportedly need and they're supposed to be compatible with the version of MacOS I'm using.. it has been difficult and I've tried just about everything I can think of - even bought an RX580 8GB because I was under the impression that those worked natively with MacOS but that also didn't work. I've been trying various things, and managed to make a boot drive clone through Terminal commands - so I do have a bootable instance of my Mac Pro OS on an external drive that I've managed to load into, but it still won't allow me to install the needed web drivers to fix things so I'm just a bit lost now. I've now bought an old ATI 5770 from a Mac Pro 5.1 and I'm hoping hat popping that in the machine will allow me to see what's going on and, hopefully, find a solution! But I guess we will see. • Check for jobs in Aldi, they've been quite adamant about continuing to open a lot of new stores across the UK despite the lockdowns, so I presume some of those will end up being somewhere in Glasgow. by imtriing (Wed 5th Aug 2020 3:23am)
  • I am not sure whether they still do it, but Ropka House just beside the Sainsburys garage on Woodlands Rd have a licensed kitchen that used to be available for occasional hire. Might be worth giving them a shout! by imtriing (Sun 9th Aug 2020 4:11pm)

  • There is literally no way you can frame this action by Brel that doesn't just make it seem like a scummy practice. If they hadn't turned up then fair enough, Brel keeps the money cos that's literally what a deposit is for - but if they didn't spend as much as the deposit they were asked to provide and were then refused the difference back? Ehh.. aye that's shite no matter how you say it. by imtriing (Tue 11th Aug 2020 3:02pm)
  • Try the iCafe on Sauchiehall St, just opposite the CCA (or thereabouts, don't quote me) - should be open til 7pm. by imtriing (Tue 11th Aug 2020 3:08pm)
  • Anything is better than being told to fuck off, that £30 was essentially taken as a "booking fee" and if fucking *Brel* thinks they can charge a booking fee then they've clearly lost all sight of what their establishment actually is. by imtriing (Tue 11th Aug 2020 3:14pm)
  • Well it's certainly East of everything West of it. That's about all I can say about that. by imtriing (Tue 11th Aug 2020 3:11pm)

  • And likewise, I think its shitty for a company to behave in this way to its customers - especially right now. Remember - they need the customers more than the customers need them, so maybe it would be in their best interest to not let people like OP here leave feeling like they've been mugged. by imtriing (Tue 11th Aug 2020 5:09pm)

  • The way that poor wee thing is twitching, it is clearly in the death throes of whatever awful poison you've left out for it. Next time consider humane traps. And please stop wasting my fucking council tax payments. Cheers. by imtriing (Wed 12th Aug 2020 11:41am)
  • That's not how council tax works. And need I quote your PS where you say they're sending out a private company to mouse proof your home? If this is the hill this "entitled cunt" dies on, he'll die happy that at least he's not a wasteful, useless moron like you. by imtriing (Wed 12th Aug 2020 11:55am)
  • But then if you are so aware of how council tax works that my point requires a "No shit sherlock" retort, why did you ask the council to only use *your* council tax payments as you've stated above? Do you need to have a wee lie down? You're contradicting yourself all over the place. by imtriing (Wed 12th Aug 2020 12:39pm)

Called himself Merlin, and he'd hide with his back sensor to the wall, his gun covering his chest sensor and an arm covering his gun sensor. Cheating wank. by imtriing (Thu 13th Aug 2020 3:03pm)

  • I am glad to hear that your situation is better. If your identity were protected via voice modulation and your face was not shown, would you consider consenting to a filmed interview about your experience? What you've described is genuinely both shocking and appalling, worse still because its largely being swept under the rug. I have been waiting for some grand unveiling of a new plan for housing our vulnerable since the stabbings a few months ago but it would seem that all the administrative parties involved would rather sweep it under the rig and hope that it gets lost in the background noise of all the other chaos going on at the moment. by imtriing (Sun 16th Aug 2020 12:09pm)

  • Mostly it's misappropriation due to plain idiocy, but there is also an element of malicious intent involved. Stephen Purcell and his ilk, etc. The key issue is that more money is spent dealing with the results of poverty, instead of the causes of it. There is seemingly little desire to actually solve the problem, and while it is admittedly a huge problem to solve - it is far from impossible. Many years ago, Glasgow engaged in a ferocious and concerted effort to curb its problems with knife crime. Nowadays, the methods developed in our city in those years are used as the blueprint for other cities suffering from a similar problem. Most recently, London. So, why can we not have as sustained, targeted and combined an effort to tackle the root causes of poverty in our city too? Maybe one day we could provide the blueprint for accurately tackling that problem, too. It doesn't seem too unreasonable a request, given the net benefit to our city that it would result in. A boy can dream, but it's better to not dream alone. by imtriing (Tue 25th Aug 2020 11:56pm)

  • There are a few buildings that were built as a "temporary" structures I believe - they were never intended to be long lasting, sadly - so were knocked down shortly after the exhibition! There were lots of cottages built - the photos of the "Russian town" show some of that. Those were all knocked down too sadly - but some replicas of, I believe the German Cottages, were built in KG Park just below the University and are still there to this day - and lived in! by imtriing (Sat 3rd Oct 2020 2:45pm)

  • Yeah this person has it totally backwards - they sacrificed the mental wellbeing of kids in order for their parents to be able to get back to work because they needed to protect the economy. Look at the top comment? My sister is a teacher too and she would likely completely agree with this summary, she's absolutely burst trying to deal with completely apathetic, burned out, nihilistic kids. But who can blame them? Can you imagine being 13/14yo right now, becoming aware of the world and your place in it only to realise that the entire thing feels like it is up in flames and the people who are meant to be responsible for it are all flapping their hands and doing fuck all? I'd be fucking nihilistic too. by imtriing (Wed 18th Nov 2020 7:32am)

Not even *mentioning* the Euros is just shameful, especially when the majority of people won't benefit from them happening here in any way and they will invariably cause a gigantic spike in cases which we will then be punished further for. It is pretty fuckng disgusting and I'd really like to see it addressed publicly. by imtriing (Sat 29th May 2021 7:12am)

  • Get a shallowish metal bowl and make a ramp leading up to it, smear some peanut butter around the rim about 2 or 3cm below the top and then put a shallow depth of peanut oil into the bowl - around 5-8mm. They will walk up the ramp to find the tasty peanut butter smell, try to get to the peanut butter and fall into the peanut oil at which point they will be too lubricated to be able to climb back out the bowl. In the morning, you will find a wee bowl with squirmy oily mice in it. Let them run around in a shallow depth of warm water with a little hand soap to wash the oil out of their fur and then pop them into a cardboard box to take them out of your flat to a field somewhere and release them far, far away. This is the most humane method of dealing with mice I've found, and its super effective because they cannot resist peanut butter. by imtriing (Sun 27th Jun 2021 1:37pm)

  • In the third picture - the one of the boiler, there is a grey knob at the bottom. Surrounding that there is a bunch of buttons that you flick up or down in order to set timers for the boiler to come off and on. It looks as though your boiler is currently set to just plain OFF - 0. In the middle it looks like there is an image of a clock which would probably indicate that that setting utilises the timer switches to come on and off automatically. The 1 on the other side is likely just flat ON. Flick that knob round to the 1 position and wait to see if you hear anything firing up. You should hear some clicks and a slight whooshing sound, then the sound of flowing water, then your radiators will start to heat up. by imtriing (Tue 17th Aug 2021 1:49pm)

  • Looks like you need to read a bit more about the paradox of tolerance. You are conflating hate groups with human rights groups and political groups and claiming they are the same thing, so therefore in the name of tolerance we should allow them their day to spread the word of their hate. You are promoting tolerance for the intolerant, and if you happen to fall into a group that said hate groups don't like, you're literally the chicken voting for Christmas... but something tells me you wouldn't need to worry too much, so that's why you think everyone should be given a platform - because their hate doesn't directly affect you. by imtriing (Fri 17th Sep 2021 1:05am)

  • I reckon its one of those things that requires large scale adoption to become cheaper, but right now because of the niche its in it will be at a slight premium. It will get cheaper, but there really ought to be incentives. In countries like Sweden, they have something called Pant. All cans, plastic bottles and glass vessels have a rebate amount applied to them and there are machines in convenient locations where you can process all your recycling and receive a small payout. It might only be a few quid, but its enough to incentivise a high level of uptake. Anyway sorry I'm rambling now. Don't understand why these type of initiatives are not supported by Scottish Government on a large scale. by imtriing (Tue 4th Jan 2022 11:43am)

Plus you've got Victoria Park right there for when the weather is real nice, and you're on the Canal path that takes you all the way out to Loch Lomond by bicycle. I just don't support Labour because their policies created a lifetime of debt for Glasgow on a local level, and on a national level they took us into a massively costly illegitimate war for profit. • The problem is likely coming from your ceiling - do you have, or have you had, birds nesting in the eaves/attic space? It's highly likely that you have at one point or another. Those moths eat the feathers and nest materials birds leave behind, which is why they're so prevalent in tenement flats. You need to investigate whether they've managed to take hold somewhere - if you are a knitter, check your stockpile of yarn in particular, or any wool clothing in your wardrobe. Take everything out and wash it if you can, then clean the inside of any wardrobe/dark areas extremely thoroughly. If they've laid eggs anywhere, you're not necessarily going to see them (unless they have already entered larval stage, in which case you may find a little pile of moth maggots crawling about somewhere... fair warning.) so a thorough clean of the area, and of any fabrics will hopefully clear out any unhatched buggers (anything that can be washed at 60c safely, wash at 60c.) Cedar blocks are meant to help but I don't know whether thats anecdotal or not - can't hurt to get some and stick them in your wardrobe after you clean it out, and I suppose you could also try some cedar incense ropes - [https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/202789647711](https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/202789647711) and see whether the intense smell of cedar makes them fuck off - but you would probably have to burn it fairly consistently. Luckily the stuff I've linked you isn't heavily perfumed, it just smells a bit like you've got a log burning fire on the go. The only other solid alternative would be getting one of those gas bomb things and letting it off in your flat, but that's a pretty heavy duty measure and if they're coming from the eaves then you wouldn't even really sort out the source of the problem, just the ones that have migrated into your space. Anyway... part of living in a tenement sadly, but I hope some of these thoughts help! by imtriing (Wed 11th May 2022 2:00am)
  • If they're from London, they're going to be pleasantly surprised by how close by the West End is hahah. In London, it's an hour on the tube no matter where you're going (I swear this is true.), so a half hour dander down the road to some nice pubs and restaurants will be like night and day compared to what they're likely currently used to. by imtriing (Thu 12th May 2022 5:45pm)

As for supermarkets like Tesco, Sainsbury's etc - it depends on the size of the store. Most of the bigger supermarkets stay open til 10pm or so, there are some really large ones (Tesco in Maryhill is the first that springs to mind for me) that stays open 24/7. Anyone an extremely keen baker who will be running the oven an awful lot? It's just a massive variable. I work from home in a small 1 bed (with lots of computers) and pay £120/mo for Gas & Electricity atm. So, maybe consider around £200-250 to be the 'average' for a 4 person situation, but like I say - it really depends on what kind of usage you expect. by imtriing (Mon 4th Jul 2022 11:04am)

Perhaps as a temporary measure it could work, and then once you're in the city you may find it easier to secure something better? Glasgow Cali is very easy to access because of its proximity to the bus station, you should maybe consider looking further afield - consider Dennistoun out towards Alexandra Park, the buses back into town from along there are plentiful and would take you almost directly to your Uni doorstep? by imtriing (Mon 11th Jul 2022 4:42pm)

  • I'm with Speirs & Gumley and honestly, they've been fine - Tenement close of 10 flats, no cleaning service - we just do it on a monthly rotation between us, so the costs are minimal. Think it's about £35/month or something along those lines. Any time I've had an issue where I've needed to get someone out to take a look at a blocked gutter or something else I couldn't feasibly fix myself (fuck going on the roof) it's been handled fairly quickly. Of course, my experience is not going to be the same as everyone elses and our close is largely fairly self sufficient. by imtriing (Tue 26th Jul 2022 11:05am)
  • The buildings are *fucked,* is the short answer. The local council cannot afford to carry out the necessary remedial works to unfuck them (and the longer they lie in the condition they're in, the worse the situation is going to get), and the price-tag reflects that you'd pay £6-8k for a flat that was in an uninhabitable, unsafe building. Not to mention that the decline of the shipyards basically spelled doom for places like Port Glasgow because these tenements predominantly served as housing for ship-builders, labourers and other working class men & women who made that industry function - since it has disappeared, there is less pull for people to live there and hence we end up with situations like this.. by imtriing (Wed 27th Jul 2022 2:04pm)

You should look on r/HardwareSwapUK maybe, and ask there if anyone local has any bits and bobs kicking about. Other than that, Amazon/Scan/CCL/OCUK etc all offer fast shipping options. by imtriing (Fri 29th Jul 2022 5:02pm)
  • Depends whether they own or rent, to be honest. Lots of tenements have really shit sound dampening between floors - most tenements, before the original floors were laid, had anything and everything jammed underneath them to act as sound dampening - brick dust, bricks, building rubble, rubbish - basically, whatever waste shit leftover from building the building that was kicking about. And in some cases, they used nothing. The other thing that could have happened is that during renovation, this stuff was removed to make way for pipework or wiring and then was insufficiently replaced, meaning their floor is basically just a big drum. So, from their end - if you can appeal to their sensibilities - would be to have their floors lifted and have some kind of substrate added to help dampen the sound of their footsteps on the floor and other sound travelling down. But this is a big ask, and would probably require a fair amount of negotiation. Other things like rugs can make a big difference, and also just being conscious of how you move through your flat etc. I live on the top floor of a tenement and always either walk about barefoot or in slippers and with a mind on not stomping/walking on my heels/marching around because I am sure my downstairs neighbour would not appreciate that... I think the fact that they're having band practices and not, you know, getting a studio for that... maybe they are just arseholes who don't give a fuck. From your end, foam sound insulation with the cones facing upwards stuck to your ceiling, basically to create a false ceiling, or some very good active noise cancelling headphones. by imtriing (Tue 2nd Aug 2022 5:35pm)

  • There are no minimum rental periods on any rental contracts in Scotland, you could find a 1bed flat on any site with property rentals in Glasgow and throw down a deposit if you're quick enough, stay for 3 months and then hand in 1 months notice for your fourth and final month. However, I would not recommend you inform the rental agency that that is your plan, otherwise they will most likely not rent to you.. It would also likely be expensive because 1 bed flats are 1) not in massive supply, 2) renting here has gone crazy lately and 3) every student and their granny are trying to rent flats right now in preparation for uni starting back next month, but it is an option. The other alternative is to find a room in a flatshare either on Gumtree or Spareroom, or find somewhere you can block book for four months on AirBnB - this last suggestion is liable to be eye wateringly expensive though. Not entirely sure what else to recommend, maybe other folks would have other ideas. by imtriing (Wed 10th Aug 2022 8:52pm)

  • I don't mean to probe, but I must query.. how much are you paying on bills & utilities (gas, electric, internet, council tax)? My conservative estimate would be, seeing as you're paying half the mortgage, that at most you're looking at about £300 a month on those things? Which puts you to £660 outgoing, leaving you around £900+ each month for food and leisure, which realistically should be enough to not be scraping by by the skin of your teeth presuming you have no dependents (I noticed you say you didn't have kids elsewhere.) - I'm really, genuinely not trying to be impertinent, but do you have a monthly budget you adhere to each month? How frequently do you get paid? Again, I sincerely hope you don't regard my probing as impertinence. by imtriing (Thu 18th Aug 2022 8:29pm)

Nevertheless, I really recommend getting into a habit of, any time you get paid, sticking even a tiny amount in a separate bank account and doing your best not to give in to temptation to spend it. It does become a slightly addictive thing, and the sense of security and stability that even having a wee pot set aside in case of any kind of emergency is really good for your mental wellbeing. by imtriing (Thu 18th Aug 2022 11:51pm)

You will either struggle to find somewhere, or be stuck on a waiting list until some point early next year most likely. Hopefully someone can find some suggestions for you that will yield quicker results. by imtriing (Wed 2nd Nov 2022 2:49pm)

  • Learning to drive atm is a fucking nightmare because so many instructors stopped teaching when lockdowns hit, and so many people who wanted to learn couldn't due to said lockdowns. What you're seeing now is the backlog of people trying to crush through. Depending on your locality, it could even be a 6 month wait list for a test - though, there are apps you can use to pull your date forward by snagging cancellations. Your best bet is going to be peppering as many instructors as you possibly can and seeing if any of them have availability or a short waiting list. When I was looking, it took me 8 months just to find an instructor who could take me on. Might be slightly better by now, but this was only in Summer this year, so I wouldn't have too high hopes. I also looked for 'intensive' training courses, but simply couldn't find any available in Glasgow or was brought to companies that either didn't exist any more, or instructors who had massive waiting lists, as previously mentioned. Just start contacting people, it's the only thing you can do. by imtriing (Tue 15th Nov 2022 12:57pm)

Ben Venue or Ben Vorlich maybe a better shout? by imtriing (Fri 2nd Dec 2022 3:14pm)
  • I did Ben Lomond one year with my dad and gf on New Years Day and there was about 3ft of snow at the summit haha, it was great - I guess my main concern is being on my own. • Thank you, this is superbly useful advice. I was saying to my partner that I wouldn't push past any point of comfort, if it seemed sketchy I'd just turn around - I've done both climbs before so it wouldn't be out of a desire to 'bag' them or anything, I just want to go a nice walk and see some nice views! I think I'll go to Ben Venue purely because the lower elevation will mean that there likely isn't ice, or if there is it'll be minimal. It's still a lovely walk! by imtriing (Fri 2nd Dec 2022 9:00pm)
  • If possible, leave the window cracked as often as you can - not just when you're showering. The paper covering on the ceiling is problematic, because if it truly is just onto timber then the chances are that the mould spores have made their way into the timber, and that's going to be a harder task to deal with.. Do you own the place, first and foremost? If you do, what I would be tempted to do would be to take the ceiling back to said timbers and get some kind of dehumidifier into the room to really try to dry out the structure of your ceiling - treat the timber with bleach/black mould spray and let it soak in), then replace the ceiling with a piece of bathroom specific mould resistant plasterboard and get a plasterer in to put a coat of plaster over it. Once the plaster is dry, get some anti-mould/mould resistant bathroom paint and give the entire ceiling a good coating. Depending on how much of this stuff you can do yourself, the cost might not be too eye-watering, probably a couple of hundred quid - with the most expensive part being getting a plasterer in to skim the replaced ceiling. If you don't, then things are going to be much trickier to deal with at the root - especially because you're going to be fighting against gravity to try and get any mould-treatment chemicals into the ceiling. In this instance, it would probably be best to really try and treat the ceiling day on day for a couple of weeks with an anti-mould spray, fire a dehumidifier into the room to draw out all excess moisture constantly, and then give the ceiling a couple of coats with an anti-mould/mould resistant bathroom paint after a sustained campaign of regularly cleaning the area it presents itself. by imtriing (Wed 7th Dec 2022 4:27pm)
  • No worries man, anything to help - I'm not a tradesman, but I have renovated my entire flat so learned a thing or two in the process, happy to offer what little DIY expertise I do have and also understand the needing to stick to a small, tight budget too - hence why I ended up learning the thing or two! Okay, so what do you have to hand - any tools, paint rollers/trays, etc? Do you have a dehumidifier? If you don't have one, do you know anyone who does who might lend you theirs for a week or so? Here is anti-mould paint: [https://www.screwfix.com/p/zinsser-self-priming-paint-matt-white-2-5ltr/3939g](https://www.screwfix.com/p/zinsser-self-priming-paint-matt-white-2-5ltr/3939g) Here is moisture resistant plasterboard: [https://www.diy.com/departments/gyproc-moisture-resistant-tapered-edge-plasterboard-l-2-4m-w-1-2m-t-12-5mm/35762\_BQ.prd](https://www.diy.com/departments/gyproc-moisture-resistant-tapered-edge-plasterboard-l-2-4m-w-1-2m-t-12-5mm/35762_BQ.prd) Here is a Black Mould Remover spray I've previously used to surprising effect: [https://www.amazon.co.uk/Cillit-Bang-Black-Mould-Remover/dp/B00XVJG1HI](https://www.amazon.co.uk/Cillit-Bang-Black-Mould-Remover/dp/B00XVJG1HI) I wouldn't want to advise on whether you should strip the paper back without seeing it myself first - feel free to send me a picture of your bathroom with the problem areas circled, it will help me get a bit of a better idea of what you're dealing with. Where are you in Glasgow? by imtriing (Wed 7th Dec 2022 4:47pm)
  • Ahh there are light fittings. Okay, definitely complicates things slightly but not *massively.* You'd want to disconnect the lights, then tape the bare wires and just leave them hanging down. Once you're ready to re-board the ceiling, you'd mark where you wanted the lights to sit in the new board and bore holes for them (presumably some kind of circular LED downlighter variant?) and then make sure the wires were dangling through said holes when you went to attach up the new board. Taking back plasterboard is surprisingly easy tbh, you just get a crowbar/prybar or claw hammer and start hacking it off. It's usually held up with plasterboard screws that go into the timber frame of the room. Bit of a messy job, but throw a tarp down and it's not too painful. Then, getting the new plasterboard up is as easy as cutting it to size with a stanley knife, and firing it up with the same type of screws. Like I say, it's after *that* point, where you get someone in to skim the ceiling, that it can be costly - but depending on the size of the ceiling, I wouldn't expect it to cost more than £100 or so. I think you'd probably surprise yourself with what you can learn when you force yourself to, and using YouTube - I absolutely did, I was not a DIY proficient person *at all* prior to renovating my flat! • Some neighbours across the way from me have done this, bought all three single-end tenement flats on one floor, blocked two of the doors up and knocked walls through to make one big flat that comprises the entire floor. I imagine they did it when the flats were cheaper to buy, mind you - and I suspect there is quite a bit of planning permission wrangling required, as you'd need to arrange for supporting i-beams to go in where you'd want to knock through supporting walls, which would probably need to be winched in through the windows etc. Amazing idea though, I really wanted to buy the flat next to me when it came on the market so that I could do the same sort of thing, but the realisation that it would cost the price of the flat, plus probably another £20-30k for the planning/work, and then I'd be left with a flat that would be worth considerably *less* than the two flats as separate 1 bed entities kind of made the entire thing go sour in my mind. by imtriing (Tue 13th Dec 2022 6:46pm)

If you have original wooden flooring, you could get it all lifted and fill in the cavity with something dense like cork-mulch for sound-deadening as there's possibly not anything in between their ceiling and your floor., but this only makes sense if you own the place. by imtriing (Wed 22nd Feb 2023 1:58pm)

If you go into the backend, you can put it into a modem passthrough only mode, and then get an aftermarket WiFi router that will give you a much better WiFi coverage. Extenders are not going to be great, as if you're in an older tenement you're probably also dealing with not wonderful electric wiring, and given extenders put the connection into the electric circuit and pull it out at the other end, it might just end up not making anything any better. The other option is to hard-wire absolutely everything that you use, as then the connection will be as stable and reliable as it possibly can be. by imtriing (Thu 23rd Mar 2023 12:51pm)

  • The camera is doing a lot of heavy lifting here - This is ISO 100, 20mm F3.5, 30" exposure, so it really allows the light a chance to imprint on the sensor. In person, there was an aura, a glow, and you could see the columns and pillars with a *very* slight hue - I didn't realise the purple was purple until I saw it in the camera, for instance. There is the possibility this was owing to the fact that the moon was still in the sky (out of frame left), so was casting a marginal amount of ambient light pollution. I reckon if I had waited about until 4am, there was a spike that was double the nT value of the one I photographed, and the moon would have been well below the horizon by then - if the clouds were still sparse then, that would've been a better show, but unfortunately I had work this morning and didn't want to be a complete bag of shit! by imtriing (Mon 24th Apr 2023 1:22pm)

  • Yeah, that is pretty soulless - but honestly for a tenement the EPC isn't awful; I reckon my 1 bed in Partick is probably about the same and I own it, its just the nature of the buildings. There are ways and means of improving it of course, but they're not exactly cheap, so if I wouldn't consider doing it for a flat I own and live in, I'd doubt any landlord out there would be willing to outlay to make their tenants lives better. Supremely shit situation. Doubling 2nd home council tax for AirBnBs etc is fine, but it doesn't really do much for the inner city situation, for renters, or to draw some money back out the leeches that hoarde property to get a rental income from. My solution would be to keep Council Tax as it is for single homeowners, cut it by 50% for renters, and charge landlords 100% of the council tax payment. GCC would see an uptick in income, it goes some way towards addressing the imbalance/inequality and gives the people who need it most a well deserved bit of respite. by imtriing (Wed 26th Apr 2023 12:31pm)

You might find success taking them to the Botanic Gardens in the West End - there's a curve in the path at the far end where a small stoney beach leads to a shallow, slow moving part of the river that would likely be a good introduction and also means that, should anything happen, you will be absolutely capable of barrelling into the water like an overprotective parent to go to their rescue. There's also very often a kingfisher that flies up and down that portion of the Kelvin that's worth keeping an eye out for. by imtriing (Wed 26th Apr 2023 12:45pm)
  • Oh, well even so that's still ridiculously pricey.. I stopped renting 5 years ago and we were paying £785/pm for a top floor 2 bed tenement with a huge living room, hall, kitchen and bathroom.. insane how things have gone nowadays. by imtriing (Wed 26th Apr 2023 1:46pm)

A friend of mine was recently talking about potentially adopting an older cat as he would like the company, but wouldn't necessarily have the time to adopt a kitten. • I got doored a number of years ago, by a guy who'd parked on double yellows at the corner of a junction cos he was rushing to get to a bookies - made me crash into another car, so their insurance all got involved and I had to give my statements to both, got sent to physio (if you get sent to physio, go, and take it seriously - I went, but didn't take it seriously, didn't do the exercises she sent me away with as often as I should have) and one of my old injuries flared up this winter.) and in the end got a settlement. I am struggling to remember the name of the lawyers that represented me, I'll try and look it out, but Cycle Law Scotland do sound like an absolutely great group to be in touch with. by imtriing (Mon 1st May 2023 9:56am)

  • Okay then, go to Sweden. The roads there are always in great condition, and it is a cold, wet country that sees harsher winters than here. The difference is that they actually invest intelligently in infrastructure that can handle the conditions, whereas here we do precisely as folk are saying - big contracts to someones mate to do a shite job that will fall apart after a year or two. Absolute dross. by imtriing (Mon 8th May 2023 11:53am)

  • It's one difference, however on the way out of winter there is definitely that same element of freeze/thaw/freeze - can be glorious one day and then snow 3ft the next. They don't even clear the roads - winter tires are mandatory and they put down this extremely heavy grit that gets embedded in the compacted ice. They do not melt the sheet with salt. It's just altogether handled differently, but the surfaces of the road are, generally speaking, much better - a solid blanket of smooth surface, not at all like our patchwork quilt of bits of road in various degrees of degradation. I'm sure there's more to it, but nevertheless.. by imtriing (Tue 9th May 2023 4:42pm)

They're obligate carnivores, so will eat basically anything that is meat - if you have a local butcher, maybe worth going in and seeing what scraps/offcuts they can offer you for cheap and then chop those up really fine, almost like a tartare? Just trying to think of cheap options that will keep them healthy! • Glasgow is fucking infuriating for rabbit specialist vets, it's surprising really - but I think people don't really view rabbits as 'important' pets, in a weird way? They just get papped in a hutch outside and occasionally played with - but if you've got an indoor rabbit, they are incredible and have really strong, funny personalities. Depending on the health issue, finding a vet that knows how to appropriately treat it can be a bloody nightmare. by imtriing (Thu 25th May 2023 11:53am)
  • This conveniently ignores that in order to get the train, OP would have to get public transport to the train station, and then from Edinburgh train station to the vets.. there's simply no way it would be quicker end-to-end and to suggest so is just being pedantically obtuse. by imtriing (Thu 25th May 2023 11:59am)

If you can, get a picture next time and feel free to DM me and I'll see if I can identify whether it is actually wild or domesticated, if it is domesticated then it needs to be rescued ASAP as it will simply not survive in the wild on its own. by imtriing (Tue 30th May 2023 10:40pm)

  • There are lots of resources available mate, things are never as bleak as they might seem. Consider Breathing Space as a first port of call, and then presuming you are male (going by your username), you might want to look for your local Mind the Men group and see about getting along to speak to someone. You could speak to your GP too, they will have access to other resources but the NHS is pretty crippled at the moment and mental health services always seem to be the first thing considered 'superfluous' in budgets sadly, so you might find better results if you look locally. Offer what you think places are *worth.* Don't let any of these charlatans trick you into fleecing yourself. The market has slowed down fairly considerably since the interest rates have been hiked, but why would they tell you that? That doesn't make you feel pressured into putting a high offer on a property out of fear someone else is going to outbid you, does it? by imtriing (Thu 5th Oct 2023 2:29pm)
  • I wonder if I can guess... are you currently with, by chance, Queens Crescent Vets? I use The Veterinary Centre - [https://www.vetcentre.co.uk/](https://www.vetcentre.co.uk/) \- on Crow Road in Broomhill since Queens Crescent made me very angry with their piss poor service on a couple of occasions. Happy to report the Vet Centre is by far and away the best vets practice I've ever had my pets at. by imtriing (Thu 19th Oct 2023 6:09pm)
  • Any opinion I can give will be anecdotal, but I've had some bad experiences. Wrong diagnosis/treatment, misdiagnosis, downright *ignoring my concerns* and telling me something I had a strong inclination was a problem was actually totally fine when, once seen by The Vet Centre, was correctly diagnosed.. that was the last straw that made me move, I realised that they don't actually seem geared towards animal care, the owner is not a vet and as such it is run as a business that is geared towards profit - thus, poorly paid overworked staff, crammed schedules with insufficient time for proper diagnosis, overtreatment because that results in higher costs for customers etc etc etc. Just, all in all, a fucking shit place that shouldn't be frequented by anyone who actually cares about their animals. by imtriing (Thu 19th Oct 2023 8:19pm)

I fear the day there's a fire in one of the tenements, because I have witnessed fire engines unable to access my street for other reasons due to the amount of vehicles parked everywhere. My councilors assure me that there have been parking surveys carried out and that my area will have parking regulations brought into force next year and, honestly, I welcome them. I would like to stand a chance of actually being able to park near my flat from time to time.. but it'll only make a difference if the rules are actually enforced, so I guess we'll wait and see.
