  • I’m calling bullshit on this. by SarahInLaLaLand (Mon 7th Jan 2019 5:51pm)
  • Watched the video about his book (pdf!) and found myself laughing. It’s so ridiculous it could be a parody. My favourite line from it “I’ll tell you how to meet girls in (cue list of exotic places) Prague, Marrakesh, Kiev, Zagreb and...Glasgow!” The addition of Glasgow is almost Patridge-esque. Half expected him to refer to ‘classic intercourse’ and ‘sex people’. by SarahInLaLaLand (Thu 10th Jan 2019 5:31pm)
  • Close. Milngavie. by SarahInLaLaLand (Wed 6th Feb 2019 8:01pm)
  • I know exactly what you mean. However, I honestly think I notice it more now because I’m getting older, and have less tolerance. I don’t think it’s getting worse - there’s always been fuds at gigs. by SarahInLaLaLand (Sun 17th Feb 2019 5:34am)
  • Phew! So glad someone else saw it too. Three people in here have seen it and not one of us got a photo. Almost as elusive as the real thing! by SarahInLaLaLand (Sun 17th Feb 2019 6:54pm)
  • I didn't notice the reggie. It was so weird as it didn't seem to advertising anything. Maybe they just really like the loch ness monster? by SarahInLaLaLand (Sun 17th Feb 2019 6:53pm)
  • Haven’t heard ‘bowfin’ since the 90s. That’s made my day! by SarahInLaLaLand (Wed 20th Feb 2019 12:55am)
  • Was it the bike racks outside the Conservatoire building opposite the Citizen M? Twice I have seen two different people checking (tugging) the locks on bikes parked there. by SarahInLaLaLand (Sat 23rd Mar 2019 12:48am)
  • What a nice thing to do! I’d like to donate some things if you want to PM me. You might be best to contact a Glasgow homeless charity and ask them what to donate and how to go about it. Or maybe ask the staff in Social Bite as I think they employe some homeless people and they have really good contacts in the area. by SarahInLaLaLand (Sun 24th Mar 2019 8:27pm)
  • You can go a maximum of 5 stops for £1.65 - any more than that and the price jumps up to £2.40. I got fed up of the inconsistency and asked a driver to clarify once and for all. That’s what he said. by SarahInLaLaLand (Sat 30th Mar 2019 12:09am)

  • You realise WHY the mental health treatment and wait times are bad, right? A little thing called Tory Cuts. It’s got nothing to do with ‘English’ people. by SarahInLaLaLand (Fri 2nd Aug 2019 8:49pm)
  • Not completely unrelated is it tho? by SarahInLaLaLand (Fri 2nd Aug 2019 8:51pm)
  • I’m not necessarily talking about cuts to NHS. The switch to the Universal Credit BS has caused illness and deaths already. People don’t have enough money for basics and are now working till later in life. All of this is a consequence of the Tories and has had a huge effect on the already struggling NHS. by SarahInLaLaLand (Fri 2nd Aug 2019 11:12pm)
  • Yeah I get what you're saying. But not ALL English folk voted that way. You can't tar everyone with the same brush. It's not anti-English to say that you want away from Tory rule. by SarahInLaLaLand (Sat 3rd Aug 2019 11:02am)
  • The switch to Universal Credit is just an example of one thing that has effected the NHS. I don't have time to list everything! I am not blaming 'the English' thanks. In your comment, you are effectively blaming the Scottish Government. One rule for you, another for everything else? What, in your opinion is the 'real problem'? I'm getting ready to roll my eyes if you say the SNP. by SarahInLaLaLand (Sat 3rd Aug 2019 11:10am)

  • Best advice I could give after last night is forget about taxis and Ubers, and just walk 5/10mins to Dumbreck (?) train station. It’s a 5minute journey to Central. We queued in a massive queue to get into the station and got on the first train. Wasn’t that busy once everyone got on the train. We even got a seat! by SarahInLaLaLand (Sat 17th Aug 2019 2:43pm)

  • If you are interested in Roller Derby, you are more than welcome to come along with me and my mate to Roller Skating at Rollerstop, Kinning Park. It's not Roller Derby but it would get you on your skates and some exercise as a stepping stone to Derby. I'm sure that folk at the rink could point you in the right direction of a local Derby team too. My mate and I are complete newbies (i.e. crap) but the folk who work there are more than happy to teach you the basics, and you can pay for lessons if you want to learn more advanced stuff further down the line. You can hire skates and all the protective gear at the rink. I did loads of research and bought a pair of really good quality skates on ebay second hand when I decided I was going to stick with it. by SarahInLaLaLand (Wed 25th Sep 2019 7:08pm)

  • There are adult-only skating sessions. Those are the ones that we go to. It is 16+ but the age group is very broad. The oldest regular is 70, and the youngest is around 18 with everything in-between. Lots of different skill levels too. My friend and I are mid 30s and we don’t feel too old or too young. We go every Thursday and Saturday evening. by SarahInLaLaLand (Thu 26th Sep 2019 3:45am)

  • Not sure if you were in the same screening as my son, but nobody in his screening (on the top floor!) even knew the fire alarm had went off for around 15mins as they couldn’t hear it over the sound of the film and no staff came to alert them. They only knew to leave after another movie-goer came in and told them to. They had to navigate their way down the fire escape themselves without any direction from staff. When they eventually got outside everyone else, who was watching the other films, and all the staff had been outside for ages! The Record have picked it up and there’s lots of folk complaining about the way it was handled on SM. Thank fuck it was a false alarm! by SarahInLaLaLand (Mon 7th Oct 2019 2:11am)

  • I don’t want to be THAT guy, but I once went into one of my uni lecturer’s office and there was a huge tapestry flag thing hung on her wall with a swastika on it. She wasn’t there, but the woman who shared the office saw the look of disgust on my face and told me my lecturer had bought it when backpacking as a teenager. I think she said it was an ancient Buddhist sign for peace. by SarahInLaLaLand (Sat 9th Nov 2019 12:33am)

  • Actually a few places advertised online DO ask for a license. All the bar jobs advertised on the GIG app, for example, always ask for a license, as they are looking for casual staff, often for one-off events and functions, and it’s a good way to tell that the staff are competent. by SarahInLaLaLand (Fri 27th Dec 2019 5:33am)
  • Having been to all the outside events, I’d recommend staying at home with a bottle of gin and trivial pursuit/karaoke. Drink queues, bams, taxi wait times will suck any enjoyment out of your night. by SarahInLaLaLand (Fri 27th Dec 2019 5:40am)

  • Was that PS Pianos? Didn’t realise that stood for a name. I thought it was supposed to be like at the end of a letter. lolol by SarahInLaLaLand (Tue 26th May 2020 9:14am)
  • I’m also in the market for a digital piano. I’ve always had traditional pianos at my parents house, but they sold their most recent one, and now I’m living somewhere with more space, I’d love to get one. I’ve been looking at Kawai and Yamaha. But I was just going to order one online. Gearmusic have some fab product videos - I know it doesn’t replace trying it out for yourself though. I’m just too impatient for the shops to open! by SarahInLaLaLand (Tue 26th May 2020 9:21am)
  • Omg yes! He lives in Milngavie or Hillfoot as he’s always ok my bus! He’s always clutching a poly bag. We call him Short Shorts Man too! I’ve only once heard him speak and he’s VERY posh. I heard him talking to a woman on the bus about his kids. by SarahInLaLaLand (Tue 26th May 2020 9:36am)
  • Years and years ago, I was on Kilmarnock road in Shawlands, and an older woman used to hit you if you looked at her. She was standing behind me at the bus stop and I heard her muttering. Thinking she was talking to me, I turned around and she twatted me one across the back of the head. I was in shock, but my boyfriend at the time, who was from there and who knew what she was like, told me to just ignore it. This was about 18 years ago...and my memory tells me she looked like Mama Fratrelli from The Goonies! The smell of pish tells me that maybe she’s the same person? by SarahInLaLaLand (Tue 26th May 2020 9:47am)

  • Oh god they were awful! I remember seeing them being interviewed on stv when I was young and then seeing them ‘live’ outside M&S! Every song sounded the same! I think it was the woman that was blind though. Or they were both blind? by SarahInLaLaLand (Tue 26th May 2020 9:57am)
  • Yet you have time to type out this passive aggressive and altogether pointless reply? I’m beginning to think Slash wasn’t the prick in this relationship... by SarahInLaLaLand (Tue 26th May 2020 10:00am)
  • Because it’s my first one and I don’t have a huge budget, I’m happy to order online. A low to mid range one is better than none, I guess?! But if you’re looking to upgrade then you’re probably best to try one out in person, as you don’t want to end up with something exactly the same as your current one. Just out of interest, how is the Casio? I was looking at the Casio AP 470 which is the cheapest one I’ve shortlisted. It sounds great online, but when you’re moving from trad piano to digital Im guessing the key weight is really important. I don’t want a digital that feels like I’m playing a keyboard. by SarahInLaLaLand (Tue 26th May 2020 10:15am)

  • Ugh! I’m on the verge of getting banned from the god awful Glasglow Girls fb group. Wall to wall hunbots’ posts. I posted a warning because everyone and their dug’s jobs being in jeopardy at the moment, these MLM wanks are preying on folk worried about money more than ever. I got my first post deleted, the second post ad the comments restricted and I don’t know if I can be arsed with a third post. • You’re exposing your asthmatic wife every time you leave the house. It’s unavoidable. However, you’re going inside the shop instead of ordering online, using toilets open to the public. Both of which are totally avoidable. by SarahInLaLaLand (Thu 14th Jan 2021 2:38pm)
  • The only time I’ve been there, I left in an ambulance because they gave me something that I was allergic to, despite me telling them about my allergy before I ordered AND when I received my food. When I started feeling sick, I asked again and they swore blind that the allergen wasn’t in the food, so I didn’t take my epi-pen, because I thought it must be something else. I was almost passed out when my friend insisted that an ambulance was called. Food was nice, even though it almost killed me! by SarahInLaLaLand (Mon 25th Jan 2021 11:09pm)
  • The food that I ate? I think it was a fruit mousse. It was a 6 course tasting menu so it was a fixed menu...I didn’t choose what I ate. I’m allergic to egg and I remember thinking that the food ‘looked eggy’ hence why I reminded the waiter about my allergy when he placed the food in front of me. by SarahInLaLaLand (Tue 26th Jan 2021 9:11am)
  • No, I didn’t. I’ve had the allergy all my life (also very allergic to nuts) and I’ve had quite a few emergencies over the years, some my fault, some other peoples/restaurants. They were definitely 100% at fault, but when you’ve got a serious allergy like mine, you kind of take a risk every time you eat food you haven’t prepared yourself. That’s the way I view it anyway. Their response to me (after my friend spoke to them a few times over the phone - they were still denying egg being in the meal) was an apology, an eventual admission that egg WAS in the food, and a full refund for our group. They also promised to get allergy training for their staff. I think there was definitely an element of not wanting to cause a fuss and feeling quite embarrassed on my part. I think if that had happened to my kid, I’d have been out for blood, so I’m grateful that my friend pushed them to own up. I wasn’t bothered so much about the refund, it was them refusing to admit that there was egg in it. I’ve had the allergy for 38 years - I know what the signs are! by SarahInLaLaLand (Tue 26th Jan 2021 11:10am)
  • You’d think that. It’s a total haze tbh but I do remember a member of staff saying to me that maybe I was allergic to something else that I hadn’t informed them about or maybe I had a new allergy that I wasn’t aware of. After it happened, I just wanted to forget about it, as it was embarrassing (most of our group, I was just meeting for the first time) and not to be overly dramatic, but it’s really traumatising when it happens, so I didn’t really follow it up further, or leave a bad review etc. Hadn’t really thought about it again until now. I feel bad even writing this now, as it was about 3 or 4 years ago, and as a small business owner myself, I don’t like shitting on other small businesses, and I’m sure they have processes in place now to avoid this happening again. by SarahInLaLaLand (Tue 26th Jan 2021 11:27am)
  • I laughed when I read your comment...because mayo in a burger happens to me ALL THE BLOODY TIME! It’s so rare I can eat a burger in a restaurant tbh because if the mincemeat isn’t bound with egg, they usually only have those brioche buns which are brushed with egg on the top. But yeah, I’ll tell the waiter I’m allergic to egg and I still get Mayo! You’re right though, much easier to spot, and whenever I order a sandwich/burger/panini the first thing I do is open it up to check. I booked a table at Ketchup in Ashton Lane years ago (is it still there??) and I was really happy that their burgers didn’t have egg. But of course, I knew they only had brioche buns, so I brought a Morton’s roll with me and presented it to the waiter asking if they could use my roll instead. My meal arrived and my burger was in between two bits of lettuce. They had BINNED my roll because they didn’t allow any outside food. I mean, wtf? 🤣 by SarahInLaLaLand (Tue 26th Jan 2021 11:46am)

  • The two options aren’t only Adopt/Rescue or terrible Puppy Farms. There are reputable breeders who breed once or twice from their much loved family dogs. I bought mine from a breeder, however any future dogs will be adopted. I have huge guilt for not adopting a dog. There’s too many out there needing homes. by SarahInLaLaLand (Tue 16th Mar 2021 9:34am)
  • This is correct. Lots of properly bred flat faced dogs have zero health issues. It’s when crap breeders and puppy farms breed dogs that have the issues, instead of only breeding dogs without the issues. by SarahInLaLaLand (Tue 16th Mar 2021 9:35am)
  • I suppose it depends on who you go to. My breeder was perfect. She asked me a million questions, saw my home, and gave me a fab puppy pack with food and toys in it. We are still in touch, and we meet up occasionally so he can see his mum and sister. She definitely didn’t treat any of the pups like a product and literally cried when I left with him. She sends me the odd random text telling me how happy she is that all her pups went to good homes. She genuinely does care. This is my first dog so I know I’ve probably been very lucky. However, I still wouldn’t use a breeder in the future. by SarahInLaLaLand (Tue 16th Mar 2021 10:11pm)

  • Even ‘kennel Club approved’ breeders can suck. Often these ‘cherished family pets’ live outside in kennels. And are nothing but a commodity. I feel like I was so lucky with my dog’s breeder. But I would never go to a breeder ever again. There’s too many pups looking for good homes. by SarahInLaLaLand (Tue 16th Mar 2021 10:52pm)
  • There’s just nothing for them to do. Obviously what they’re doing is unacceptable, but boredom breeds this sort of behaviour. I don’t see it changing until the restrictions are lifted. Until then, I’d get some good cctv around your home. I point a camera out of my bedroom window that catches most shit that goes on. Have you phoned the police? If they get enough calls, they’ll increase their presence on the affected areas. That of course just means the kids will go elsewhere and annoy someone else, but it will at least solve your problem. Regarding your close, is there secure entry or is it a regular door? They shouldn’t be able to gain access to your close. Speak to the factors and ask about installing secure entry. You need to be safe in your building at the very least. by SarahInLaLaLand (Wed 17th Mar 2021 12:58pm)
  • I think the OP was looking for advice other than ‘join a rival gang’ that several people have said, and a load of jokey comments. I’ve had very similar issues, and these are the things that alleviated them for me. I think you’re wrong about the neighbourhood watch - it helps create a sense of community - everyone looking out for each other. These kids parents may well be OP’s neighbours and may also be sick of the current situation but feel powerless or unsupported. If the kids know they are constantly under surveillance and the police keep getting phoned, they might decide to pack it in, or at the very least move away from a heavily residential area. I think it’s worth a try. by SarahInLaLaLand (Thu 18th Mar 2021 2:10am)
  • Just had another idea - my neighbours and I brainstormed lots of ideas when we were having trouble and something that came up is a machine that makes a noise that only teenagers can hear. Sounds bonkers but there is a credible proven science behind it. It apparently drives them crazy so prevents them from loitering in the area the machine is. Some of my neighbours and I had dogs so we ruled it out as we thought it might upset them. Maybe something to think about if you get desperate??? Here’s a link to it: https://themosquito.co.uk - I think there are several different ones on the market. by SarahInLaLaLand (Thu 18th Mar 2021 2:17am)

  • Trying to play Devil’s Advocate here, just because I personally know a council refuse collector and he is constantly knackered from the work he does. That van in the video doesn’t collect normal bags of rubbish, it only collects ‘special uplift’ items hence the mattress in the back. They could also be on a break where they can have a snooze is they want to. My friend regularly takes a nap during his lunch. On the flip side, I’ve been waiting for the council to collect a load of junk that was fly-tipped outside my flat for 3 months now, and again, it’s a different branch of the waste department so I find it frustrating when the bin lorry comes to empty my bins and doesn’t just chuck the fly-tipped stuff in at the same time. Bureaucracy in action, I guess. by SarahInLaLaLand (Fri 26th Mar 2021 12:42pm)
  • This is incredibly classist and a sweeping generalisation. As mentioned in my other comment, I know someone who works as a refuse collector, and he knocks his pan in ever day. by SarahInLaLaLand (Fri 26th Mar 2021 2:33pm)

  • A friend recently put an offer in 40% over and didn’t get it, so yes, definitely true. by SarahInLaLaLand (Sun 28th Mar 2021 11:08pm)
  • The one I mentioned had 18 people put offers in for it. My friend had the 2nd highest offer and the highest was only just over what she offered. I’ve no reason to lie lolol My example was £130k but sold for £180k so around 40%. I think it doesn’t help the fact there are so few properties in this price range for sale in this area currently. by SarahInLaLaLand (Sun 28th Mar 2021 11:46pm)
  • Again, my friend has no reason to lie either. The sale price will be public soon enough so it will be easy to check. My ex’s home was valued at £150k not that long ago, and his neighbour’s house on the same street sold for £190k last month - exactly same house, same number of bedrooms, same layout etc. These are ex council 2 bed semis. It’s crazy, but it IS happening. by SarahInLaLaLand (Sun 28th Mar 2021 11:54pm)

  • A potential fix for you, that I have implemented in the past, and I am doing now in my new flat. Buy ‘CCTV in area’ and ‘no fly-tipping’ waterproof signs from Amazon and stick them up. Folk will be less likely to do it if they think they are being watched and may be fined. Some folk just don’t give a shit of course. You can also ask the council to deliver letters to your neighbours reminding them that what they are doing is illegal and they could be fined. I just got a letter like that through the door as fly-tipping at the back of our flats is pretty bad right now. by SarahInLaLaLand (Mon 29th Mar 2021 8:08pm)

  • That’s not exactly true. If someone complains, especially if it’s on private property - shop shutters for example, they DO look at the cctv and make an attempt to track them down. I used to have a shop, and it got heavy graffitied one weekend. The police got the cctv and found the guy because he lived in the hostel literally right around the corner. This was 6 years ago. • I’m guessing that not everyone is in a position to pick up loads of litter every time they see it. I doubt anyone is mapping a single discarded crisp packet. If you have wee kids with you and don’t have any hands free, or if you are disabled in some way and can’t bend to pick it up, old infirm people for similar reasons. Or maybe there’s a pile of crap and you can only dispose of so much of it at one time and you don’t think you’ll be returning to that spot again to get the rest. Plenty of reasons really. This app is something I’d use, I think. I’m forever seeing piles of broken glass and I don’t have anything on me that I could use to pick it up safely. I usually flag it up on my local council’s app. This is a good alternative. My town has a couple of volunteer litter picking groups that I’m sure would use this app. by SarahInLaLaLand (Sat 10th Apr 2021 1:59pm)

  • Not sure why you’re getting downvoted. I think people need to take more responsibility here. A lot of the rubbish pictured could be recycled and isn’t general waste. I think everyone should be making an effort to use less food that comes with unnecessary packaging. Food waste should be going into a composter or food bin, or in my case…a dog, so that if necessary bin bags of general waste CAN be stored safely in a cupboard/garage/spare room, until it can get collected, or taken to the dump/recycling centre. It’s a sad fact that a lot of people just don’t give a fuck and are quite happy to dump bags of rubbish at the side of the road and moan at the council when they are part of the problem. by SarahInLaLaLand (Wed 23rd Jun 2021 1:02pm)
  • Interesting that the top of the bin has been cut-off the top of this photo. Maybe the reality doesn’t fit OP’s motive. • I totally agree. My issue is that these so-called ‘professional homeless’, like the often vilified Romanians, they aren’t making millions doing this. They aren’t living in the lap of luxury. Their daily lives still involve sitting outside in all weather conditions begging for money which is demoralising and depressing at best, but they could also be victims of violence, intimidation, human trafficking, sexual abuse, at worst. • Me neither! I knew about Edinburgh and Dundee but only found out about Glasgow when I found out this was a Glasgow pub and did some more searching. I’ve watched the 1st two series twice now and I didn’t notice anything obviously Glasgow. I think the George square scenes were made to look like New York. by SarahInLaLaLand (Wed 1st Dec 2021 11:17am)

  • Ah yeah ok, that is the episode that features this pub! I’ll give it another rewatch! by SarahInLaLaLand (Thu 2nd Dec 2021 5:43pm)
  • There are many reasons why that could be the case. Maybe it will transpire that he moved from Dundee to Edinburgh before Canada? Or that his dad was from Edinburgh, or maybe he just preferred the colour of the strip. I don’t think it’s a plot hole as such. I think that also, Brian Cox would have pointed this out at the time of getting the script, being the only Scot? Maybe he was given a reason? Who knows. by SarahInLaLaLand (Thu 2nd Dec 2021 5:42pm)
  • Brian Cox is from Dundee in real life. He would have flagged it up, I’m pretty sure, as a possible mistake. I guess we’ll see if it comes to anything. It’s too obvious that they could have Dundee & Dundee United instead of Hearts & Hibs. I think Roman would be MORE likely to confuse the two Dundee clubs. by SarahInLaLaLand (Thu 2nd Dec 2021 8:07pm)

  • Join a gym and go every other day - endorphins are real and it will make you feel better. Also eat some chocolate or food that you like, keep a stash in your house for when you feel like shit. Writing in a journal is good! Write in it how you’re feeling every day and write things you are grateful for and the positive things in your life. It sounds daft and you’ll probably feel stupid doing it at first, but these things helped me as the negative feelings can consume you. I also went to therapy which helped but it’s not for everyone. Christmas is a difficult time to go through a break-up, so keep talking to people - family, friends, people online as a problem halfed is a problem shared! Don’t make the mistake of drinking alcohol and taking drugs. That never helps and if you’re like me, it’ll just make you more depressed! Start a project - buy a second hand instrument and learn it, learn how to code or learn a new language, or even just buy jigsaws and make a point of dedicating half an hour every day to your project. Whenever you find yourself dwelling on it, go and do some work on your project. It’s a distraction but also you’ll feel better about yourself as you are improving yourself! Good luck OP!! You’ll get through this! I did! by SarahInLaLaLand (Sun 19th Dec 2021 1:44pm)
  • I think this advice - allowing oneself to full wallow - won’t work for everyone. If I had done that, I highly doubt I’d still be here. For me, distracting myself was key. • I usually put Classic FM on for him and crank it right up but it doesn’t really settle him that much. I’ll try the jazz!! I’m going to try the sock trick and see if that helps. If you don’t know it, you cut the end of a stretchy sock and put the dogs head through it so it covers their ears. • At least you didn’t have your teenage child come home from work to see you gin-in-hand watching the fucking hootenany only to proclaim “how fucking depressing!” at you, before they retired to play video games online with their friends. by SarahInLaLaLand (Sat 1st Jan 2022 1:55am)
  • Definitely! It’s been a tough time for everyone. We should take joy, and positive social interaction where we can find it! I think next year I would opt to play video games before watching the hootenanny again! by SarahInLaLaLand (Sat 1st Jan 2022 2:33pm)
  • He’d just finished a 10hour shift behind a bar and all his mates were working too. He was pretty knackered. Current restrictions have closed nightclubs so not much else for them to do at 1am. He had a good laugh with his mates which is the main thing. He’s a good kid and was just joking about my Hogmanay being depressing. Doesn’t have a mean bone in his body. He’s also taken the pandemic restrictions and guidelines very seriously so opted out from attending any house parties. He made a shit ton in tips too, which I’m sure will be spent on a night out with his mates once everything opens up again. More importantly, there’s really nothing wrong with playing video games on New Years, restrictions or not, so stop trying to shame people. by SarahInLaLaLand (Sat 1st Jan 2022 2:31pm)

The very start of the West Highland Way is 2mins from Milngavie station, and you can walk to Mugdock via the WHW or Dumgoyne along the old railway track and stop at the Beech Tree Inn for a rest. Even just walking around Milngavie, there is Craigdhu Wedge up to Kilmardinny Loch (home of The Gruffalo sculpture), The Woodland Path at Mains Estate and Milngavie Resevoir, and various parks. • Can you get a video doorbell? Maybe one of your neighbours has one? What awful people to do this. The police will definitely take it seriously but I think you’d probably need some evidence? by SarahInLaLaLand (Thu 6th Jan 2022 11:00pm)
  • Good point. Is there anything in the close that you could hide a small cctv camera behind? Potted plant or something? Could you film them on your phone through your door spyhole, if you have one? It’s very important that you keep a log of incidents with dates, times and when you phoned the police. It builds a case against them. I’ve been in a situation with nightmare neighbours and the council made me do this. Have you stressed to the Housing department how unwell you and your neighbours are and that this could potentially be a life or death situation? I really hope you get this sorted out. by SarahInLaLaLand (Fri 7th Jan 2022 12:05am)
  • Not all video doorbells are as obvious as the Ring one. If you already have a doorbell, I would definitely recommend getting a video one to replace it. I just googled and I can’t see anywhere that it’s illegal to have one in a flat close. It will alert you if anyone tampers with it. And if he does, you’ll have video footage of him damaging your property which will only add to your case against him. And I highly doubt that the wee ned is going to take you to court for filming him anyway. If all your other neighbours agree to it, then I don’t see a problem. by SarahInLaLaLand (Fri 7th Jan 2022 12:14am)

  • Go to the doctor and please get anti-depressants asap. Don’t down-play the way you feel out of embarrassment. They have seen this loads and there are tried and tested ways of making things better. If you feel like the doctor is dismissing you or isn’t taking you seriously, show him this post and stress to him that you are at the end of your tether. Failing that, ask to see another doctor. Most practises have a few doctors working there. The first thing they prescribe, might not work for you, but eventually you’ll find something that will work. We don’t want you to disappear. by SarahInLaLaLand (Fri 7th Jan 2022 12:34am)
  • By the sounds of it, OP and his neighbours have already been complaining about them. And that’s why they are spitting on the door handles in the first place. The last thing OP wants is for their actions to escalate. I’ve had problems with neighbours before, so I know that the police won’t just take them away. It’s a slow process of recording incidents in a diary. by SarahInLaLaLand (Fri 7th Jan 2022 10:16am)
  • No they don’t. They’ll just be moved (eventually) to torture some other unlucky soul. But they should definitely be moved away from people like OP and his neighbours who are in poor health. Hopefully that factor will make it happen quicker than usual. by SarahInLaLaLand (Fri 7th Jan 2022 3:50pm)

  • I totally agree with you. But I’ve had too many awful experiences crossing at the green man beside my home to know that, while OF COURSE drivers/cyclists should stop at the red, they don’t always do that. So I am always careful to make sure they have stopped before I step onto the road. Think about it another way, as a woman, I SHOULD be able to walk down a dark alley on my own at night. Do I? Hell no. Sometimes you need to take steps yourself because you can’t trust other peoples’ actions. by SarahInLaLaLand (Sun 16th Jan 2022 1:31pm)
  • To be fair, I don’t know the exact junction you’re referring to, although I used to work just off byres Rd so I’ll have a look on Google. I always tell my kid, don’t step on the road until you know it’s safe. You can’t trust road users. In an ideal world, you can, but this is real life and a lot of road users don’t follow the rules. However, I get that it might not have been possible to see the cyclist at this part of the road. by SarahInLaLaLand (Sun 16th Jan 2022 1:35pm)

  • I totally agree. My son (21) was like this at that age. Him having anxiety never crossed my mind (a sign of the times). I just always thought he was shy. Now he’s older, he’s so much more outgoing. I never forced him to do anything he didn’t want to do and I never made a big deal out of it. He just came out his shell, gained more confidence and now does things he wants to do with people he wants to hang out with. Sometimes kids are just a bit shy and lacking in confidence when they’re younger. • A lot of parents don’t seem to give a shit. Their kids are in school, not distancing, not wearing masks, not in bubbles anymore and are mostly unvaccinated. • I’m in East Dunbartonshire and when I go to the supermarket, I’d say 99% of people are wearing masks. I enjoy wearing the mask as it gives you some anonymity. by SarahInLaLaLand (Mon 7th Feb 2022 10:50am)
  • Yeah my wording was a bit harsh. Just some conversations I’ve had with my parent friends - they seem very dismissive. It’s easy to get annoyed by that when you’re not in the same boat. My kid is in his 20s now but I can’t imagine how difficult the last couple of years have been for parents of young kids. It’s like herding cats at the best of times. • Both cities have industrial pasts, good nightlife & music scenes and heavily populated with students. I think you’d be in the minority not to see the similarities. by SarahInLaLaLand (Sat 12th Feb 2022 5:40pm)
  • It’s kind of niche though? I mean both Glasgow and Manchester are known for nurturing lots of different genres with lots of instantly recognisable well know artists. They store heat during the night at a cheap rate and let it out during the day, when it’s more expensive. I had them for 5 years and still didn’t really know how they worked. My bills were HUGE when I first moved in as I didn’t realise they were different to what I was used to. by SarahInLaLaLand (Fri 18th Feb 2022 5:09pm)

  • This whole post gives off “Can’t someone else do it?” Homer Simpson vibes. I totally agree that it should start with the general public. I feel that the council waste department is treading water with the huge amount of litter and the individuals working there are generally hardworking. It’s not as easy as ‘print more money’ when it comes to employing more staff to clean the streets. There are budget constraints and also, more importantly limited numbers of people who actually want street-cleaning jobs. by SarahInLaLaLand (Mon 21st Feb 2022 6:26pm)

  • I’ve had a similar situation in the past. If you are concerned for the people in the house, phone the police every time it happens, at the time of it happening, and phone social services when their offices open. They tend to take it more seriously if there is an established pattern. They also take it more seriously when they see police/ss have been contacted before. Isolated incidents tend to get overlooked. by SarahInLaLaLand (Tue 22nd Feb 2022 2:56pm)

  • Possibly. Sorry about that. by SarahInLaLaLand (Sun 27th Feb 2022 3:01pm)
  • I’ve possibly got quite a unique viewpoint. I studied Fashion Business (the course is called something else now) at Caledonian Uni and the course was split in two - half was design, garment construction, sewing, CAD etc and the other half was theory, business, marketing, history, finance. After I left uni, I opened a shop selling Scottish designers’ work. I came up against the same issue time and time again with GSA students/alumni - they could make some amazing items, but they didn’t have the business knowledge so they couldn’t price their work appropriately for commercial sale. They also didn’t seem to understand that their items required to be presentable for the shop floor with clear branding - swing tags, cleaning instructions, a label with the name of the person who made it. I had a few GSA folk selling in my shop who got it, or their work was so good and sellable, I worked with them to overcome the hurdles. But tbh it was a total pain in the arse to be running my own business and then help other people with theirs. I guess what I’m trying to say is that if you are looking to make items to sell, rather than just fashion as art, you will need to do outside learning as the business side doesn’t seem to be taught or at least not emphasised. This could have changed since I encountered these issues, so it would be a good idea to have a look at the curriculum before applying. by SarahInLaLaLand (Mon 28th Feb 2022 12:37am)
  • I guess it depends what OP wants to do when she graduates. That’s just one of many pathways. And you’re right that nurturing creativity comes first as a priority there. I do disagree about learning business skills after graduation though. So many don’t see the need or the value and that their work should sell on its own merit without any marketing, and retail prices are plucked from thin air, and that lose threads don’t matter because it’s art. Maybe I went too much the other way - all about the business side! by SarahInLaLaLand (Mon 28th Feb 2022 3:59am)

  • Your post says you open the door to them as they press and hold your buzzer. If you stop answering, they’ll stop eventually. by SarahInLaLaLand (Fri 11th Mar 2022 7:19pm)
  • You need to phone the police, council and environmental health often enough to make an impact and leave a paper trail via email too. This is very important to establish a pattern of behaviour otherwise they won’t act. They will ask you to keep a diary of all incidents. Start it now if you haven’t already. Take photos, noise recordings and video if possible. Get a video doorbell. Sometimes you can’t avoid phoning the police. Stop answering the door to them. Even if they press and hold your buzzer. Turn it off or get some noise cancelling headphones. They will give up eventually. You need to be more stubborn than them. You shouldn’t have to move. It’s different if they are being threatening or violent towards you. They need to change their behaviour. If it’s affecting your mental health, make an appointment with the doctor to discuss it as the council take that seriously. by SarahInLaLaLand (Fri 11th Mar 2022 7:25pm)

I’ve currently got a noisy upstairs neighbour with you kids who run around constantly, and yes while it’s part of living in a block of flats, there are steps you can take to make things easier on both you and your neighbour. It will also hugely benefit you with the huge spike in electricity charges. Carpets and rugs will make your fist much warmer. by SarahInLaLaLand (Sun 13th Mar 2022 10:59pm)

  • You do realise that makes the barking worse, right? by SarahInLaLaLand (Sun 20th Mar 2022 9:39pm)
  • Some practical ideas that I implemented when I lived beneath a kid who was a gymnast, and above a Jack Russell with separation anxiety who barked a lot, when I first started working from home: Soundproof the ceiling and walls - My landlord paid for this and it made a huge difference! I think the stuff was called Kingspan and was large sheets that you nailed to the walls/ceiling. Buy a white noise machine - sounds like new-age bollocks but it works! I now use mine when I have trouble getting to sleep. Hang heavy curtains and put rugs/carpet on your flooring - it helps insulate your flat and lessens outside noise from creeping in as it makes your flat less echo-y. Honestly…if you do any of these things, you’ll notice a difference. It would also be a bonus if your above neighbour did the soundproofing & curtains/rugs/carpets too which she might be open to. by SarahInLaLaLand (Sun 20th Mar 2022 10:05pm)

  • Encouraging some to act violently towards a family like the one OP has described is incredibly stupid. Not everyone wants to react with aggression. And most times all it does is escalate things. It’s always best to follow the legal advice and try and minimise the sound entering your home. I’ve been there with practically every neighbour I’ve had. by SarahInLaLaLand (Mon 21st Mar 2022 8:39am)
  • Did you go to the police about this? I find this way more concerning than a dog barking. by SarahInLaLaLand (Mon 21st Mar 2022 8:37am)
  • Meditation would also help OP tbh. by SarahInLaLaLand (Mon 21st Mar 2022 8:36am)
  • Sorry if I misread…it takes a lot more than a dog barking for noise disputes to end up in court if it’s not a civil case. OP would be better to put that money towards sound-proofing his flat, and maybe offering to pay to sound-proof his neighbours flat. by SarahInLaLaLand (Mon 21st Mar 2022 8:41am)
  • I feel you! My son is now 21 and a bit more sociable and outdoorsy (thank you alcohol & dating!), but I had this same problem throughout his entire teenage years. I definitely recommend Rcade, Geek Retreat, Forbidden Planet, the cinema, bowling, Nando’s (kids seem to love this place - I can’t bare it!). There’s lots of shows on at the various theatres and gigs so you could check if anyone he likes is playing. But that’s quite expensive. I used to drag my son kicking and screaming around galleries and museums and tbh I sometimes feel like I shouldn’t have bothered. He probably did enjoy it a bit when we got there, but you can’t change someone, and if he loves his PC (my son still does) then sometimes you’re better to leave them to it and let them do what they love and as they get older they’ll develop other hobbies and interests. At least you’re his big bro and have more perceived street cred than I did! He might be more up for doing things with his cool older brother!! The best thing that happened for my son was he got a part-time job. It gave him loads more confidence, he made friends out-with his pals from school who all were pc obsessives too! I just saw this at the science centre: https://www.glasgowsciencecentre.org/whats-on/minecraft-hour-code I think the event has been but there could be a coding or Minecraft workshop you could attend somewhere. Maybe instead of taking him away from something he loves, try and get involved and help him further his progression. My son went on to do Computing Science at uni so a coding workshop might a great thing you could do together! by SarahInLaLaLand (Mon 21st Mar 2022 11:10am)
  • Oh Christ…sorry OP, I thought it was just a woman and her chihuahua. Two border collies stuck in a flat barking all day sounds like hell. Poor dogs. Collies are so clever and need a lot of mental stimulation and exercise and they are obviously not getting it. Do they get exercised at all? If they got a lot of exercise, they’d be less likely to bark the place down. Some dog owners are just ignorant as to what a dog needs. by SarahInLaLaLand (Mon 21st Mar 2022 12:08pm)
  • Can’t believe there were 4!!!! That sounds crazy! Especially in a small flat! I’ve got a dog who barks sometimes so I always tend to see it from the dog owner point of view first. What you’re going through sounds awful. I actually have an ongoing issue with my neighbour and his dog, but it’s a different issue to yours. It’s more a neglect issue than a noise one and it’s proving just as hard for something to be done about it. Look after yourself OP. I would try not and engage with the owner, especially if she and her family can be aggressive. 6 years is a long time to put up with this. It sounds like you’re at breaking point. Stress the mental health aspect when you talk to the council. If you haven’t done so already, make an appointment with your doctor and see if they can suggest with copying mechanisms if you’re struggling. by SarahInLaLaLand (Mon 21st Mar 2022 4:15pm)

  • I only graduated a few months ago. I’ve got my own business so I can afford to be picky about jobs. I’ve been offered two but they weren’t remote, so I passed on them. I only want to work remotely and within e-commerce development so I’ve applied for far, far fewer jobs than most people leaving the course as they will probably apply for everything and anything and take the first job they can get to get on the ladder. Every person that was in my class is employed within the industry. Most jobs I’ve seen advertised and the ones I’ve applied for are around 24-26k for a graduate/junior role and after around 6-12mths it would go up to around 30-35k. My two bits of advice are - 1. don’t work while you’re doing the course. I had to as I’ve got a business to run, and I had to pay for the course (there is funding available but I didn’t qualify). It was almost impossible to do the classes, homework, run my business and run my house & be a parent. I’ve used the time since graduating to build on my learning. 2. Don’t go into the course with zero coding experience as you will fall behind quickly. The marketing says that no experience is necessary. • Everyone is making daft jokes because they think OP is a man. OP is a woman living next door to someone being sexual intimidating on purpose it seems. It’s really not that funny, especially when she says it’s got worse since she complained and that he’s loitering outside her flat. OP, you need to phone the police. by SarahInLaLaLand (Wed 30th Mar 2022 5:30pm)
  • I don’t mean to worry you unnecessarily, and I get that sometimes it’s either laugh or cry in these situations so joking about it could help, but your neighbour’s behaviour is not normal and incredibly unsettling and should be taken very seriously. He might just be a harmless wanker with an exhibitionist streak, but even then, involving innocent, unconsenting people in a kink is never ok. If you have kids or you live alone, I’d be phoning the police every single time it happens. The fact that you are scared, just confirms that it’s serious. If the police turn up at his door, might make him think twice? by SarahInLaLaLand (Wed 30th Mar 2022 6:16pm)
  • The police will take it seriously if you stress how it’s been ramped up since you complained and he’s now hanging about your home. Don’t make light of it when talking to the police, laugh about it or apologise (women especially do this a lot because they don’t want to be seen to be a bother, or prude-ish). It’s the police’s job to keep people safe and it’s your right not to hear constant wanking/shagging/porn through your walls and feel intimidated in your own home. The police should also know that the older guy is possibly being taken advantage of too. If you need to chat or moral support, please DM me. • Starting and running a business is fucking hard, stressful and strangely isolating at the best of times, let alone during a pandemic, while also in recovery. Cut yourself some slack. You’re doing great. First hurdle is asking for help. Good luck to you mate. I know you might want to stay anonymous, but I’d love to support your business! by SarahInLaLaLand (Thu 31st Mar 2022 9:38pm)

  • I always wonder if it’s a legal requirement to tell viewers about a house’s murder history. Honestly, you dodged a bullet, that area is a dump these days. The murder was just the last straw for us. I used to come home at 3am and there would be pre-school kids playing in the street alone. • I saw this post and just knew that I’d see posts asking what the point of protesting is, when historically the point is obvious. More frustrated than annoyed. Nothing personal. by SarahInLaLaLand (Tue 5th Apr 2022 1:53pm)
  • I get it. I apologised for my shitty tone and I’ll leave my original comment in. You are totally correct in that reacting like that doesn’t facilitate a positive interaction. I think that when I saw your comment and username, I wrongly assumed you were on the wind-up. When I think of protests resulting in positive action, I always think about Womens Suffrage Movement first. Followed by racial inequality protests - the most famous one with MLK I Have A Dream speech, to the more recent George Floyd related ones were very successful in gaining worldwide awareness, showing solidarity and addressing important issues. The protests resulting in the destruction of the Berlin Wall is huge in my mind too when it comes to protests being successful. For me, even though a few hundred people standing in George Square isn’t going to stop any wars on its own, showing solidarity to those directly effected by it, living in our city is hugely important. If everyone sat back and did nothing, no pressure would be put on those in charge making decisions. by SarahInLaLaLand (Tue 5th Apr 2022 2:15pm)

  • I live there so I’ll give you an in-depth rundown. Andiamo - expensive Italian restaurant with bar area. 3/10 don’t bother. JawBrew - microbrewery & teeny pub with teeny beer garden right in train station car park. Chill, nice staff and good gin. 7/10 Garvie & Co - a bit grannyish. Lots of old ladies go there during the day for tea and scones. Not much different at night really tbh, but they’re on the Prosecco. 6/10 but only because they let in dogs. Quite expensive. Fancy whiskey bar with piano upstairs that never seems to be staffed. Wasted potential. Fullbacks (formerly F Pizza) - think Paesano but with a snooker table. 8/10 sports bar Charlie’s Loft - bar/nightclub/event space frequented (if their Instagram is anything to go by) exclusively by beautiful 21 year olds, but in reality, quite a mix of ages depending on the event. 6/10 only because I can’t remember much from the times I’ve been apart from loads of coke being done in the toilets. Finsbay - I love Finsbay tbh. The decor is fab - very 60s vibe and the cocktails are really good. Also quite expensive tbh. 8/10 Talbot - I worked there when I was a student 20 years ago and the clientele hasn’t really changed. The most traditional pub of them all. Regulars and west highland way walkers. 9/10 just because loads of Milngavie snobs don’t like it. Loses a point because you might get stuck beside a crazy whose been barred from everywhere else. Burnbrae & West Highland Gate are technically in Bearsden but right on the border. They are both alright, but not worth the walk. by SarahInLaLaLand (Thu 14th Apr 2022 9:30pm)
  • He asked permission. I don’t think he was really asking though as the doors were locked. We laughed about it after but about 18 years later, it makes me feel sick and actually pretty terrified for my younger self. I’ll always remember I thought he looked like Charlie Brooker and I messaged CB on MySpace to tell him thinking it was a funny story and that he’d see the humour in it. He was clearly horrified and said he was glad I was ok. He also said it couldn’t have been him as he couldn’t drive! by SarahInLaLaLand (Thu 14th Apr 2022 9:48pm)

  • It’s not Michelin star, but in comparison to everywhere else I’ve mentioned, I would say it’s definitely fancier. I wouldn’t go wearing jeans and trainers…put it that way. I would always wear a dress and heels if I was going there, especially in the evening. Not to say people don’t wear jeans, but I wouldn’t, and that’s how I gauge it. Perceived Restaurant fanciness is probably totally subjective. by SarahInLaLaLand (Fri 15th Apr 2022 8:05am)

  • When I say it’s small, I mean it’s v small. I always usually sit outside with the dog even though dogs are allowed inside, but I just prefer it. I can’t comment on their selection of craft beer as I don’t drink it, but their JawBrew beer seems to be popular! They also make Bardowie Gin which is what I drink. The microbrewery is on the same site as the pub and I’m sure they offer tours so might be a good idea to book one if you’re interested in craft beer. by SarahInLaLaLand (Fri 15th Apr 2022 5:22pm)

  • So many funny stories from when I worked there! They used to have a pool table with a wee short pool cue (you couldn’t use a standard length one to play certain shots because of an awkwardly placed pillar) and one night after closing, a member of staff found a shit-covered pair of boxers (they were absolutely destroyed) in the mens toilets - and yes we knew who they belonged to. The wee short pool cue was used to pick them up and lob them into the wheelie bin. And then the cue was put back on the rack as if nothing had happened. No Dettol, not even a cursory dip under the cold tap. It was forever known as the ‘poo cue’. These were the lawless, bacteria-splattered, halcyon days of 2001, not the sanitised, health & safety gone sensible, post-covid days of 2022. by SarahInLaLaLand (Fri 15th Apr 2022 5:51pm)

  • Yeah The Talbot is so hit and miss. I like it because I know pretty much everyone in there - blessing and a curse from working in various Milngavie pubs over the years. But it’s pretty quiet and cheap! by SarahInLaLaLand (Sat 16th Apr 2022 12:31am)

  • Bearsden is dire for a night out. 55BC (is it still called that??) and The Station bar (imaginatively named as it is located next to…The Station!) and I can’t think of anywhere else. Surely there’s not just two bars in Bearsden? Edit: just remembered about Massimo’s that seems to always either be on fire or being refurbed after a fire. by SarahInLaLaLand (Sat 16th Apr 2022 11:41am)

I’ve done a few of these cheap do-at-home kits and they are all terrible and don’t really work. They fuck up your tooth enamel too. The ones from the dentist are more expensive but don’t damage the teeth. by SarahInLaLaLand (Mon 18th Apr 2022 9:48am)
  • Not true at all. When you go to the dentists, they don’t actually whiten your teeth for you. They take impressions and give you the syringe kit to do it yourself at home. by SarahInLaLaLand (Mon 18th Apr 2022 9:50am)

  • Not everything should be catered to the ‘average person’ ffs. I’m skint af, but not everyone is. Let people live their lives and enjoy themselves. It’s Buchanan Street not Sauchiehall Street, so whatever goes in that unit will be fancier. Plenty of places to eat for those of us with lower budgets. by SarahInLaLaLand (Tue 19th Apr 2022 9:43am)
  • So are diners with lower budgets tho! It’s Buchanan Street…what did you honestly expect to go in that unit? A Mcds? A Primark? lol. The city centre is DYING. I’m glad it’s not another empty unit tbh. Despite what everyone thinks about The Ivy, and its clientele, the new restaurant will be popular and will contribute to bringing some life back to the city. Which can only be a good thing. I really doubt they have the authority to ‘kick a homeless guy out’ but whatever. by SarahInLaLaLand (Tue 19th Apr 2022 9:55am)

  • The irony is, looking at OP’s post history, she is having a terrible time at the moment, which I have nothing but sympathy for. But what she so clearly fails to realise is a similar downward spiral can lead to drug addiction and homelessness in someone else. by SarahInLaLaLand (Wed 20th Apr 2022 10:52am)
  • The comments are full of it and you knew exactly what you were doing. I doubt a homeless person is walking into Frasers and buying designer clothing, which is kind of the inference here - that he can afford expensive clothes, so he shouldn’t be asking for help. He could have been given them as a gift, bought them from a charity shop, or he could have bought them before his luck changed. Not everyone is born homeless. Circumstances change. Having worked in high street & luxury fashion retail for most of my life, I’m not naive enough to say that they couldn’t possibly have been stolen…but that also doesn’t correlate with the narrative in the original post. by SarahInLaLaLand (Wed 20th Apr 2022 11:07am)
  • >just ignored him as you do Yeah not everyone does that. by SarahInLaLaLand (Wed 20th Apr 2022 11:18am)
  • Not white knighting at all, but you are (possibly inadvertently) normalising that behaviour and you sound like you think that everyone does it, so it’s ok, when they don’t. I very rarely give money these days, but I at the very least acknowledge people asking for help. I don’t just pretend they don’t exist. by SarahInLaLaLand (Wed 20th Apr 2022 11:31am)
  • How do you know he wasn’t homeless? The only ‘proof’ you have is that he had expensive clothes on. Nobody begs for fun. by SarahInLaLaLand (Wed 20th Apr 2022 11:46am)
  • This made me laugh, not gonna lie. by SarahInLaLaLand (Wed 20th Apr 2022 12:14pm)
  • I’m no longer replying to her. I think she’s a troll account. Her post history doesn’t reflect her comments here at all. She talks about being in a dire financial situation herself, unable to pay utility bills, yet doesn’t have much sympathy for folk who probably were experiencing exactly that before their situations got even worse. by SarahInLaLaLand (Wed 20th Apr 2022 12:33pm)
  • I might get down-voted for this, but the best thing I ever did for my mental health and my social life was get a dog. He’s my best mate and THE most loyal, loving, funny wee guy. He’s truly my best friend. If you’re able, and by that I mean physically able to walk him and stimulate him enough, and also got the funds for vet bills (if you get benefits, you would be qualify for vet treatment via the PDSA) I would recommend it. I’ve met so many people including a couple of people who I now consider to be my best (human) mates through my dog. It’s amazing how many conversations and interactions you will have at the park, or just walking down the street, with other dog owners. Pets (not just dogs!) can be so calming, fulfilling and give you the best reason to get up in the morning and get out and about and get fresh air. I hope you’re ok, mate. Friends come and go through life. Try not and take it too personally or too much to heart. Everyone struggles to make friends, especially as they get older. You’re definitely not alone. by SarahInLaLaLand (Thu 21st Apr 2022 8:50pm)
  • > plenty of Scottish steamers Yup by SarahInLaLaLand (Thu 21st Apr 2022 9:50pm)
  • No definitely not! Maybe start out with Borrow My Doggy or walking a neighbour’s dog. That might even be enough. I was reluctant to post my comment as I didn’t want anyone to think that buying a dog is a cure-all - a bit like a couple with a shit relationship thinking a ‘bandaid baby’ will fix their relationship. I can only say what helped me during one of the worst times of my adult life, and continues to help me 7 years later. by SarahInLaLaLand (Thu 21st Apr 2022 10:32pm)
  • I was depressed and this was the only thing that worked for me and continues to work for me. In my follow-up comment, I suggested offering to walk a neighbours dog which is much less of a commitment while still getting some of the positives. There is a lot of research that shows dogs help those suffering from anxiety and depression. But I do agree that this wouldn’t work for everyone. by SarahInLaLaLand (Thu 21st Apr 2022 11:18pm)
  • I got my eyes done there 6 years ago. My night vision is definitely not as good, but don’t have dry eyes and my vision is still as good today as it was when I first got it. No regrets! by SarahInLaLaLand (Fri 22nd Apr 2022 12:59pm)

I got mine from Toffs for £30. Please don’t do it in your Converse. by SarahInLaLaLand (Fri 22nd Apr 2022 11:51pm)
  • Why does any of that matter? by SarahInLaLaLand (Sat 23rd Apr 2022 9:24pm)
  • I commented this replying to a moron. I’ll post it here too: OP, please tell the police and carry a self-defence device with you. You can buy various things online. Also install a video doorbell. If they see you have cctv, it may be enough to deter them to at least stay away from your home. It might sound crazy, but you can also get discreet body cams. You could show the footage to the police and it would definitely put these guys off if they know they are being recorded. by SarahInLaLaLand (Sat 23rd Apr 2022 9:33pm)
  • Tell me you’re a man without telling me you’re a man. You honestly think a female victim of stalking and harassment or her female partner should be the ones to confront the group of guys? I think it’s you who needs to live in the real world. OP, please tell the police and carry a self-defence device with you. You can buy various things online. Also install a video doorbell. If they see you have cctv, it may be enough to deter them. It might sound crazy, but you can also get discreet body cams. You could show the footage to the police. by SarahInLaLaLand (Sat 23rd Apr 2022 9:31pm)
  • Yes it’s important to give a description to the police, but possibly pointless to give a description to folk on Reddit about an anonymous area that could be anywhere in Glasgow. There’s been a few comments already inferring that the men in question aren’t white, which is the info the comment I was replying to was obviously digging for. by SarahInLaLaLand (Sat 23rd Apr 2022 11:33pm)
  • You’re an idiot. by SarahInLaLaLand (Sat 23rd Apr 2022 11:30pm)
  • If you don’t understand the fundamental differences between how men and women are treated in society, especially with relation to violent crime, then you’re either a time traveller from the 1950s or you’re stupid. Which is it? by SarahInLaLaLand (Sat 23rd Apr 2022 11:37pm)
  • I don’t agree. And I have way more experience of being a woman pestered by creepy men than you do. As does every other woman who has commented here. Unless you yourself are a creepy man who pesters women, I really doubt you have the magic ultimate answer on how to get them to stop. Contrary to your opinion, the police are incredibly pro-active, in my experience, when it comes to situations like these. OP needs to report it every time it happens and focus on defence and prevention, not confrontation. by SarahInLaLaLand (Sat 23rd Apr 2022 11:53pm)
  • I apologise if you’re hurt by being called a very tame insult. However, you’ve got to know you are just winding up people with your attitude and suggestions. They are proven to not work and honestly, your suggestions are fucking dangerous which just makes me angry as someone might see your comments and think that’s the best route to take, when it definitely isn’t and they could be hurt. by SarahInLaLaLand (Sun 24th Apr 2022 8:46am)
  • If you are renting, could you ask your landlord to pay for a video doorbell and let them know about the issues you are having? If you stress that these guys were looking in the windows and hanging around, they should see that as a huge security risk on their property. Hopefully they will care about your safety too, but I know what landlords are like!! by SarahInLaLaLand (Sun 24th Apr 2022 8:59am)
  • Read my other comment. What good is OP giving a description of a man in an anonymous area of Glasgow to a bunch of Redditors? Give the description to the police. Some people in this thread are foaming at the mouth, hoping that the men are not white. They may not be, but the racism in this thread is gross. by SarahInLaLaLand (Sun 24th Apr 2022 9:09am)

  • There are a couple of comments below from people thinking that OP is in Govanhill, probably due to this being the top comment so thought I’d reply so people see that it’s not, without sifting through comments. by SarahInLaLaLand (Sun 24th Apr 2022 9:23am)
  • It’s more the ‘it’s govanhill isn’t it?’ Type comments heavily implying that the men are not white. It’s maybe not overtly racist, but the inference is there that if OP is being pestered by men, then there’s no way it can be white men. That’s racist. by SarahInLaLaLand (Sun 24th Apr 2022 9:20am)
  • Buh bye 👋🏻 by SarahInLaLaLand (Sun 24th Apr 2022 9:25am)
  • It’s the automatic assumption that the perpetrators are not white that bothers me. They may well be, but OP didn’t say anything that alluded to their ethnicity. She only said it was Glasgow and everyone automatically assumed they were not white. by SarahInLaLaLand (Sun 24th Apr 2022 11:54am)
  • But OP doesn’t even live in Govanhill!! by SarahInLaLaLand (Sun 24th Apr 2022 11:52am)
  • Again, I think I, and the other women in this thread know a bit more about what type of men hassle women in the street and how they do it. White Scottish men do it too ffs. The worst incidents I’ve had with men have been British white men. Sorry if you don’t believe me or my experiences don’t fit your narrative. by SarahInLaLaLand (Sun 24th Apr 2022 2:52pm)
  • OP said they were hanging out in a coffee shop and the incident happened when they are leaving. Hardly hanging about on the street. And yes, some white men do this too. Some white men hang about the street outside pubs being drunk and aggressive. Some don’t. My issue is with the generalising and the assumption of skin colour. It took me 2 seconds of looking at your comment history to figure out you’re a man. by SarahInLaLaLand (Sun 24th Apr 2022 5:16pm)

He said he was going to ‘look into it’ but I notice they aren’t advertising that gig on their socials and it’s not on their tour dates poster. by SarahInLaLaLand (Tue 26th Apr 2022 1:51pm)
  • If you saw the driver skoosh something at you from inside the car, then it won’t be the windscreen washers like others have mentioned, but only you know that. Just because Glasgow is known as a ‘friendly’ city, it still has a VERY high crime rate and you should be on guard walking alone at night, especially as a woman and especially as a woman of colour. It’s shite, but it’s true. Always try and walk in populated areas if you can. I would still contact 101 (non emergency number) and tell them. Let them know exactly what happened and that you were wearing a headscarf. They should add that street and surrounding areas to the list of places to patrol. If it is a random loner driving about squirting people with mystery fluids then that is definitely something that needs looked into. I could *almost* understand a group of immature young lads in a hatchback doing it for a prank, but a man doing it on his own in a luxury car is definitely much more concerning and sinister. Stay safe OP! by SarahInLaLaLand (Wed 27th Apr 2022 8:56am)

You can feel sad for whatever has driven an addict to start taking drugs to begin with, but you can also feel scared and angry of their resulting behaviour too. Clumping them all together as ‘junkies’ instead of ‘people’ with illnesses and serious problems, is not the solution. All it does is create division. by SarahInLaLaLand (Tue 3rd May 2022 2:32pm)

  • For cheapness: Primark on Sauchiehall street or argyle street, Buchanan galleries for chain store stuff. In Buchanan galleries there is a store called Scottish Exchange which has lots of cool bits & bobs by Scottish artists/designers. More spenny: Frasers & Princes Square on buchanan street. Italian centre & Cruise (are they still a thing?) for designer stuff. De courcey’s Arcade (west end) just off Byres road for quirky stuff and Ruthven Lane (west end) & Kings Court (city centre) for Vintage. If she likes vintage Mr Bens is a must! There’s a few good places on south side including Amarylis - no idea if this is what it is actually called coz am currently pished post-platty jubs (enforced parental nonsense - no judgement plz) but a quick Google will tell you what the actual name is. I’ve been in the situation recently where a train has been cancelled at Milngavie station, so I phone Ambassador from the platform and they say it’s going to be 45 mins for a taxi. I walk outside the station and see a taxi sitting there, chap the window asking if they can take me to town and they say yes! • Ok I’ve been in your situation and got it sorted out - in a way. Im also a pain in the arse, control-freak Karen who doesn’t let shit slide, so we might have different personalities lol. I honestly stopped stressing about the bins when I delegated myself to being the person to sort it out. Otherwise nothing is going to happen. Here’s what I did: I contacted the council and got more bins - for free. If you phone them enough - pester them every single day and say it’s impacting your mental and physical health and you don’t have money - say there are rats or you got cut by glass, and there are not enough bins for the amount of flats, and threaten to phone your msp/tabloids - they will send more. They should only charge for bins that are lost and damaged by your fault. You don’t have enough bins to begin with which is the main issue here, and the council should initially provide them free of charge. If there are 10 flats and your bins are collected weekly, there should be 12 general waste bins (one each and two extra), and 3 or 4 of each of the recycling bins. If your bins are collected less frequently than once weekly, then you need more bins than this. If the council refuses to give you bins for free (if you pester them enough, they will give you them but you need to contact them constantly!) then knock everyone’s doors and get them to chip in. If the bins cost £100 then that’s a tenner each. Get the money before ordering. If the flats all have landlords or are council tenants, then the landlords/council should pay, not the tenants. Invoice them professionally and address it ‘to the home owner or landlord - refuse invoice enclosed’ as most tenants just forward that mail to their landlords. I would then buy a can of spray paint and paint everyone’s flat numbers clearly on their bins. Make sure bins are lined up neatly and easy to access. The refuse guys always leave our bins in a big pile - I usually go out and line them up so they are easy to access. It takes about 2mins to do. A couple of my neighbours now line up the bins too. Tidiness can be infectious. Then send a letter (factors are shite - sometimes you need to do this stuff yourself!) to everyone in the building saying that there are rats in the bin area (most folk are scared of rats) or that you cut yourself seriously with broken glass and they need to use their own allocated bin and to take it out to be collected every week. And detail what you are doing - ordered more bins, lining up bins etc Print and laminate an a4 paper sign and hang it in the bin area that states the requests to keep everything tidy and use the correct bin. Add clip art of a rat and bloodied hand. You could also reiterate what days the bins have to go out and that everyone is responsible for taking their own bin out. If the bins are all numbered and certain ones are not being taken out, it will become obvious very quickly who is not pulling their weight. You can pinpoint the flat and contact the council/landlord. I would go a step beyond this and knock on all the doors to hand the letter personally - make up some bullshit that you got bitten by a rat / cut your hand on glass when putting your bin out and you’re worried for everyone else. If your neighbours know you’re making an effort and it’s not some faceless factors guy, it might shame them into co-operating. I would use this opportunity to ask the tenants for their landlords contact info so you can contact/invoice them directly. If this all fails, then I’d add padlocks to all the bins and give everyone their own key. With regard to the bins being taken out. Is anyone in your building disabled? The council will take out the bins for anyone not able to do so. I’ve lived in a flat where the council came and collected every non and returned them too. I’d ask the council about this service and how much it costs. Good luck! by SarahInLaLaLand (Mon 20th Jun 2022 10:16am)
  • This is a really good point. As it stands, OP doesn’t have their own designated bin. OP at the very very least, needs to get his own bin and padlock it so others do t use it. That way, he’s not just doing what he’s complaining about everyone else doing! by SarahInLaLaLand (Mon 20th Jun 2022 11:34am)
  • I get that you’re frustrated, but by leaving your rubbish on the floor, you’re just doing what everyone else is doing, and the very thing your complaining about. You need a bin of you’re own. And padlock it. Nobody is asking you to buy 3x bins. These things sometimes have a domino effect. If others see one person order a new bin, put their number on the side and padlock it, others will follow suit. by SarahInLaLaLand (Mon 20th Jun 2022 11:37am)
  • Totally agree. My factors and council did fuck all. I ended up just taking it into my own hands and got it sorted. by SarahInLaLaLand (Mon 20th Jun 2022 11:42am)
  • OP can order new bins, label them with his flat number and lock them up. As it stands, he’s just part of the problem. by SarahInLaLaLand (Mon 20th Jun 2022 11:45am)
  • I get that you don’t want to put the rubbish in your flat, but I think you need to bite the bullet and order yourself a bin, otherwise you’re just adding to an already shit bin situation. You don’t need to buy all three bins now. Buy them over the next few months. It might be good to chat to some of your neighbours. For all you know, they are feeling exactly the same and they don’t know how to fix the situation. If you can get enough folk on your side and doing the right thing, that would be a huge help. Even if out of the 10 flats, half of them start doing the right thing, it’s still a huge improvement! by SarahInLaLaLand (Mon 20th Jun 2022 3:08pm)
  • The super secret way to get a free bin is to say that your bin got dropped in the lorry. It happens often enough for it to be believable, but not enough for them to change anything to prevent it. It’s not your fault, it’s not the fault of the refuse collectors…it’s just something that happens sometimes. Forgot to include it in my previous comment, but it would probably resolve things quicker than anything else! That’s a great resource!! I’m going to check it out now! by SarahInLaLaLand (Tue 21st Jun 2022 1:24pm)

  • Unless they are committing crime, why exactly would police intervene? It’s not a crime for homeless people to hang about outside shops or the station, as much as some in this thread want it to be. The root of change needs to come from the govt and then local councils. Glasgow has a terrible homeless/drug problem (and yes, the two are very much intertwined) but how does that get fixed? More homeless accommodation, drug addiction centres would be a good start and decriminalising drugs would free up a lot of police and related resources instantly. by SarahInLaLaLand (Sat 9th Jul 2022 8:43am)
  • Reading IS hard. The actual word used was ‘bothering’ not ‘hassling’. I think in this case, OP needs to clarify the definition of ‘bothering’ as it’s open to ambiguity. In my own experience of working in a shop in Central Station (therefore coming and going from there a lot) I tend to see the homeless people mostly interacting and ‘bothering’ each other and not non-homeless pedestrians outside of sitting with a cup asking passers-by for change. Referring to people who have fallen on hard times as ‘tramps’ and ‘junkies’ is one of the problems here. by SarahInLaLaLand (Sat 9th Jul 2022 1:18pm)

  • You could maybe have a trans-friendly evening where you give pampering/haircuts/style advice to trans people with a wee glass of bubbly? I don’t think it’s really about having trans staff, although that would definitely help, but maybe being pro-actively inclusive - have a sign in window/posts on social media that state that your business is a safe, inclusive space? Share photos of hairstyles popular with trans customers on your social media? I think a great thing would be to have an instantly recognisable logo or banner on your website that trans/queer people recognise as showing your biz supports them. Or maybe in your FAQ, you could have a question “I am trans, am I welcome in your business?” And you could answer “of course, everyone is welcome to our salon” and go on to highlight any queer events you host. by SarahInLaLaLand (Sun 10th Jul 2022 7:01pm)

  • I never have cash on me and I’m generally pretty skint so I tend not to tip delivery drivers if I’ve already been charged for delivery. I will tip in a restaurant usually 10% but only if the service has been good. I worked in hospitality for many years and you’d be shocked at how little waiting/bar staff are tipped. Especially by regulars. by SarahInLaLaLand (Tue 19th Jul 2022 10:19pm)

  • If the people causing trouble were middle aged, I would want to find a solution to stop them too. Age has nothing to do with it, other than that there is a product available to disperse young people. It’s not ageism. It’s anti-social behaviour-ism. by SarahInLaLaLand (Fri 22nd Jul 2022 11:29am)
  • I bought my aunt tickets in that section for Strictly not knowing she had vertigo and she was crawling up the stairs on her hands and knees. Luckily a member of staff found a closer seat for her. lolol by SarahInLaLaLand (Fri 22nd Jul 2022 11:27am)
  • Dude who hurt you? My son is probs about the same age as these kids so I’m definitely not discriminating against young people. In society it’s mostly older people who are discriminated against anyway. If it happened to be a group of black people or gay people being cunts (I should note that OP didn’t mention their skin colour or sexuality so these people could belong to these demographics - it’s odd that you’re assuming they don’t) then yeah I’d want it stopped. It would be fucking weird to ignore anti-social behaviour just because the perpetrators were black or gay - it shouldn’t be a factor. Cunts are cunts are cunts. by SarahInLaLaLand (Fri 22nd Jul 2022 5:20pm)
  • Are you honestly comparing racism and homophobia to this? Really? Are you really that lacking in self awareness? by SarahInLaLaLand (Fri 22nd Jul 2022 11:23pm)
  • Ok, so an old black gay woman murders an innocent person in cold blood, not self defence, and has a knife in their hand and is charging towards another innocent person clearly with intent to cause harm. A male bystander uses a chair to push her back and to divert her away from hurting more people and by doing so causes her no physical or mental harm. Is this bystander racist, homophobic, sexist and ageist? The noise machine is irritating but doesn’t cause any harm. by SarahInLaLaLand (Sat 23rd Jul 2022 8:54am)

  • A friend of mine’s neighbours’ kids were very noisy to the point that she was losing sleep and couldn’t work during the day. Turned out one of the kids had autism and adhd so it might not be as ‘easy’ as the parents ‘controlling’ them better. My friend ended up moving, as there was literally nothing anyone could do. Is your neighbour a council tenant? I’ve had success with complaining to the council about awful neighbours before. Just be prepared for them figuring out it’s you who complained and chapping your door! You could soundproof the room you work/sleep in using Kingspan. You could also say to your neighbour to put rugs/carpets down to dampen their noise if they currently have wooden floors. Yeah . Both these things will make a huge difference. by SarahInLaLaLand (Mon 25th Jul 2022 11:59pm)
  • Shaming people who have got scammed or almost got scammed is pretty fucking shitty mate. Scammers play on peoples’ vulnerabilities and the cost of living crisis/pandemic current climate makes normally rational people vulnerable. Please phone NHS 24, Breathing Space, the Samaritans or send me a DM. I felt like this when a relationship ended badly and I’m so glad that I never did anything. • The frustrating thing is that there is no incentive to earn more because you’re then taxed considerably more. I personally don’t mind paying more tax because the rich (I’m not rich but you get what I mean) should be taxed, but for a lot of people it doesn’t make sense to take on extra hours and responsibility when it means you’re only going to be earning a couple of hundred more a month when your salary has substantially increased. by SarahInLaLaLand (Fri 19th Aug 2022 12:11am)

It was torture. My ex is the most intolerant person ever but to this day he’s never complained. He just puts on a podcast or music at night to drown it out. Have you tried that? by SarahInLaLaLand (Wed 31st Aug 2022 7:51am)
  • I did ask the doctor at my first appointment and tbh I didn’t get any answers. Thought it would be best to ask folk who have actually had it. I had another appointment now and just got penicillin thank god. Other reason for putting it in here is that folk might have it and think they have covid. If they know it’s not that, they could treat it differently and contact doctor. by SarahInLaLaLand (Wed 31st Aug 2022 11:31am)
  • A bit harsh. I didn’t ask for them. I was given them without asking. I’ve got severe asthma so finding it difficult to breathe at times. The doctor isn’t going to give in to giving a patient medicine because they are ‘hassled’ into doing it. by SarahInLaLaLand (Wed 31st Aug 2022 3:58pm)

  • Being homeless in Glasgow or any major city isn’t a nice life. Doing a Dick Whittington isn’t going to make your situation any better. If you’re unhappy and in a rut, you need to figure that out first. Being homeless on top of the other problems not being solved is just going to make things worse. You’ve got a nice roof over your head. Keep it. Not saying, don’t move to Glasgow, you’d be very welcome, but don’t move here to be homeless. by SarahInLaLaLand (Sat 3rd Sep 2022 10:44pm)

You’d meet lots of likeminded people too. I retrained last year at 39 when I was pretty depressed after a breakup so you’re never too old to do that. It definitely gave me focus, and a new lease of life. by SarahInLaLaLand (Sat 3rd Sep 2022 11:03pm)

Really nice pizzas, a mini vinyl shop, and they give you your bill in a vintage cassette. Also they change up the words on the toilet doors every day, especially if there’s a big gig on, so a visit to the toilets is a must! Lots of pubs on that same street too. by SarahInLaLaLand (Wed 7th Sep 2022 9:31am)

  • I think it’s a pattern of behaviour by enough men that if you weren’t a misogynist, why would you mirror that behaviour if only for one comment? In my experience if a man refers to a woman as an animal as a “joke” there are usually other misogynistic traits there and it’s not a one-off remark. People are more likely to make misogynist/racist/misandrist/ageist etc comments under a cloak of anonymity on the internet and as a woman who sees comments like this every day online, if you weren’t a misogynist, why would you add to that? by SarahInLaLaLand (Wed 7th Sep 2022 1:53pm)

  • Only one newspaper (Torygraph) initially claimed it was 12mil yet that’s an unconfirmed estimate. The Treasury responded to a FOI request stating that no public money was used for legal fees or for the settlement. The Queen apparently contributed 2mill which was confirmed, and significantly less than what you posted. I think she’d be damned if she contributed and damned if she didn’t. The victim deserved to be compensated. The money had to come from somewhere. by SarahInLaLaLand (Fri 9th Sep 2022 3:17pm)
  • Not true. The Crown Jewels are not owned by a specific monarch and are held in a trust by an independent board. The current monarch cannot make decisions about the Crown Jewels (to sell them or to gift them). by SarahInLaLaLand (Fri 9th Sep 2022 3:24pm)
  • The Crown Jewels are 100% not the private property of the Queen, or now King. I think you are intentionally misinterpreting what you’re reading. They can’t sell them or give them away. They ‘belong’ (used/worn by) whoever is crowned at that time but they aren’t ‘private property’ of any one monarch. “The Royal Collection is not owned personally by The Queen, but is held in trust by her as Sovereign for her successors and the nation.” Source: royal.uk by SarahInLaLaLand (Fri 9th Sep 2022 3:41pm)

My favourite ‘celeb’ customer wasn’t a celeb herself, she was a vocal coach, but was buying gifts for Sophie Turner and Maisie Williams just before Game of Thrones came out. They were in LA and my shop was called La La Land, which is how the girls referred to LA. I remember she bought them rings with little cakes on them and I gave her badges with my shop name on them. I hadn’t even heard of GOT at that point, but on the bus on the way him that day, there was a huge billboard advertising the show on maryhill rd. Not a Glasgow celeb, but Beyoncé took a photo just a few metres along from my shop in the lane and put it on Instagram. When I saw it a couple of days later, I was racking my brains if anyone that could have been her came into the shop, but I couldn’t remember. by SarahInLaLaLand (Sun 11th Sep 2022 9:57am)

It was awful and to make matters worse, I had covid directly before. This was worse and longer lasting than covid though. I eventually got antibiotics from the doctor that sorted it out. Despite what people were saying in the comments, it wasn’t simply a virus, it was an infection and the doctor said it was also acute Pharyngitis. The doctor might have only given me the antibios because it was really affecting my asthma though. My son had the same thing and he didn’t get any. I was off work for two weeks and I still have a really bad cough and coughing up stuff weeks later, so I’m still not better. by SarahInLaLaLand (Mon 19th Sep 2022 3:20pm)

  • Make sure it’s insured, get a dog tracker device on it (I’ve got Tractive but there are ones without subscription), get a decent lock and an obvious bulky chain (but tbh seasoned thieves may have something to cut through it), get a ring doorbell that will alert you to movement outside and record any shenanigans, or cctv. You can also buy a padlocked bike shed that a moped may fit inside. If thieves want to get in, they will, but it’s just another layer of protection. Please just remember that nothing is worth getting hurt for. Mopeds can be replaced. I hope you’re not too shaken. by SarahInLaLaLand (Sun 2nd Oct 2022 11:09am)
  • I’ve got a kid, so I feel justified in saying this. Parents of children in restaurants are the fucking worst. Myself included back when my kid was younger and I thought everyone else’s world revolved around him. Children under 12 should be banned from restaurants. But let in all the dogs. ALL the dogs. by SarahInLaLaLand (Sun 2nd Oct 2022 7:30pm)

  • Of course! by SarahInLaLaLand (Wed 12th Oct 2022 7:42pm)
  • Exactly! I don’t know if I’d take advice from someone who gave up half way in. For me, I felt like giving up so many times, but I didn’t, and it came together when I was working on my solo and group projects. I didn’t realise how much I was learning because I could only see what I didn’t know (if that makes sense). CC gives you structure and direction in which to learn. It doesn’t learn it for you. I worked in the evenings and at weekends…as did most (if not all) other people on my course. Even the ones who had prior coding experience. Trust me…a lot of my work was ‘subpar’ especially early on but I’d improved hugely by the end of the course. CC teaches you the most employable languages and frameworks. I learned js and react and that’s what I use in my dev job currently. In fact my employer employs so many CC former students and former tutors. You’re not going to leave CC and go into anything other than a junior role, but the progression is good and quick. by SarahInLaLaLand (Thu 13th Oct 2022 2:59pm)

  • I got them in Mezcal tonight and tbh I was disappointed. There was no pot of dipping sauce and the tortillas were very soft. Came with a pot of red onion and parsley and in the other pot there was a slice of lime. It just all fell apart when you lifted it so couldn’t have dipped it even if there was a pot of sauce. It was delicious but they weren’t birria tacos. by SarahInLaLaLand (Fri 14th Oct 2022 1:11am)

Noise is one thing but feeling threatened in your own home is another thing completely. • Yeah a MacBook is needed. Some people in my class rented them from CC. It’s because there are different commands, installs, terminal etc for Macs and PCs and they want everyone working on the same thing. They don’t want to waste time instructing PC and Mac users separately as time is limited. Most dev jobs will be using macs so it’s best to learn on one. Re: cost…yeah it’s v expensive, but you can pay it up over the 4 months. There are grants available so make sure you ask about funded places. • Sounds like bollocks, but sticking your finger up the aggressive dogs arsehole makes them unclamp their jaws and distracts them from continuing the attack. Also if a dog has bitten your dog and has clamped on not letting go, grab their two back legs like a wheelbarrow and start walking the dog backwards. Dogs find it very difficult to balance just on their front paws, so they are more likely to let go so they can balance. If a dog is intent on attacking, kicking it isn’t going to do much. Nor is hurting its eyes, as dogs work on instinct and can put up with a lot of pain if they are in the zone. by SarahInLaLaLand (Sat 26th Nov 2022 5:51pm)

I slag it off but I’ve never had a bad night there. Met the man who brought up my kid with me in there, and also worked there for a brief period. It’s a Glasgow institution and especially for a couple of 18yr old visitors, they’d be daft to go anywhere else. • I get what you mean. I prefer dogs to people if I’m honest, as they are loyal to a fault, and when you’re that much of an animal lover, it’s unavoidable instinct to feel worse for them because they have no say and are dependant on their owners to look after them. I still feel awful for people who are trafficked, but also people can be unfathomably cruel to animals. I can’t help the way I feel, but cruelty towards animals and children will always pull on my heartstrings more than cruelty towards adults. Maybe this sounds fucked up, but it’s my honest opinion. by SarahInLaLaLand (Sun 4th Dec 2022 9:00pm)
  • Yes the elderly too! by SarahInLaLaLand (Sun 4th Dec 2022 10:36pm)
  • I did code clan last year when I was 39 and got my first job when I turned 40. You are not too old. I also don’t have a ‘tech’ background or even a prior interest in it. My background was mostly in retail & design. My best advice is to completely clear your schedule for the 16weeks as it’s intensive and requires working in the evening and weekends. Do a few free online courses before you start, as well as the pre-coursework they give you. The more you know before, the better you’ll get on. One of the best things about CC is their employer partnerships. You are guaranteed interviews for jobs at the end of your course with these partners who are mostly large companies. I would say 90% of my class ended up being employed by these partners. Starting wage is around £25k for a junior role with these companies. I chose not to take one of these jobs and for 4 months after I finished, I worked on personal projects for my portfolio and learned 2 more languages. I then got a role paying £10k more than the roles I was offered via CC partners. I can’t stress how important the employee partnerships are. It gets you a foot in the door that you otherwise wouldn’t have doing other boot camps or learning yourself. For most people, it’s worth the fee alone. I had my own business so wasn’t in a rush to get a job. If I didn’t have other income, I would 100% have taken one of the partner roles. My only criticism is that they advertise the course as doable for people starting completely from scratch with zero prior knowledge or experience. Unfortunately I found that to be untrue. I had to work so hard to keep up with the class as many people on the course had prior experience of coding whereas I had none. I felt the class went at the pace of the majority and not the minority. And that is no reflection on the instructors as they were all fantastic and were available for extra tuition with you. It’s more down to the time factor. Honestly, it was the best thing I’ve ever done. It completely changed my life and earning potential. If you want to talk more, just DM me by SarahInLaLaLand (Mon 5th Dec 2022 2:48pm)

A huge example of this is Oxford Street in London. In the 90s and 00s I used to travel down and that street was the first place I’d want to go. Now it’s awful. • Just correcting some inaccuracies in the above comment. The pre-coursework is pretty basic, compared to the actual course. There are opportunities for support during this time. Codecademy has some free courses that are an excellent way to dip a toe into coding, before committing to the CodeClan bootcamp. The course is very intensive. I fell behind a few times, as did other classmates. Whenever I flagged it up, I had a one-to-one session with one of the instructors and I was brought up to speed. You don’t need to be able to code. I hadn’t done any coding before I started the pre-coursework. It’ll be much easier if you’ve got some experience (I.e. the free Codecademy courses mentioned above), but I managed without. You must have done the course a good few years ago if you were learning Ruby. I did it in late 2021 and had a wildly different experience to you. Certainly wasn’t learning any out of date tech. I still use the languages I learned in my day to day job. The class, I found, goes at the pace of the slowest person there, not the best. But that only happens if you ask for something to be explained at the time of you not understanding. I got caught out by this a few times, as I didn’t want to slow down the class. The instructors WANT you to understand. They WANT you to pass. Ask a dozen times for them to explain it, and they will. I studied in the evenings and weekends, as did most of my classmates so not sure anyone was having relaxed, free weekends! The homework that we got every weekend, took hours to complete. A CodeClan student is never in danger of getting kicked off the course for underperforming or for struggling. This course is intensive. It’s really fucking hard if you’re a newbie to coding like I was. If it was easy, everyone would do it. But the support is there, if you ask for it. I cannot fault the instructors I had. I work with a few former instructors in my current job and you couldn’t meet devs who are more committed to learning and helping others to learn. If one of your classmates learned a certain language and then applied for a job using a different language, then that’s not unusual. Devs learn a whole host of different languages as one language won’t be suitable for all projects. It’s usual to learn a new language on the job. Tech is an ever changing industry and you need to roll with the changes, otherwise you aren’t going to survive in the industry. It’s almost laughable that you expect to learn one or two languages on a course and that’s it for the rest of your career! There are loads of CC alumni working at my office and they are all really talented devs. The reason why these companies have these employment partnerships with CC is because the graduates are really good. Nobody is hiring a CC grad in anything other than a junior position. They know what they’re getting, a solid foundational background in programming, and that’s why they hire CC grads again and again. I had to laugh about the call centre jobs comment. This is just a bonkers lie. I used the CC job board and it’s all junior dev jobs in huge companies/organisations like Scottish Govt, Barclays, Tesco, ResDiary, Baillie Gifford, to name a few. I interviewed with about 6 different companies, all from CC internal connections. It’s not telephone jobs lololol TLDR Don’t take advice from someone who gave up halfway through, and who is so bitter they’ve got a dedicated Reddit account copy & pasting the same copypasta whenever someone asks about Code Clan. by SarahInLaLaLand (Sun 5th Mar 2023 5:42pm)

I am pretty defensive just because I had a really good experience, and I wouldn’t want to see anyone put off from doing it, because it drastically changed my life when I was in a bit of a funk about my career aspirations. There are totally cons with it - it’s not a perfect, magical thing that is going to suit everyone. I guess it’s probably good for people to see two polar opposite views. by SarahInLaLaLand (Mon 6th Mar 2023 8:57pm)
  • See instead of taking photos of litter to post on Reddit, and have a phone, blame the snp or whatever, why don’t you grab a bin bag and some litter pickers or don some rubber gloves and go and tidy it up.
